‘We are Family’ campaign sends out ‘Sex Signals’

To continue the “We are Family” campaign, the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response office sponsored a visit from an improvisational comedy group to Langley Air Force Base, July 22.

Catharsis Productions presented “Sex Signals,” a show about the complexities and potential dangers of sex, to give Airmen the opportunity to better understand the importance of sexual assault prevention.

“One of our main goals is to encourage the community to show that rape is not tolerated and we, as a community, will stand together to fight against it,” said Annie Rix, “Sex Signals” presenter.

Through creativity and audience interaction, the actors displayed how social pressures, improbable fantasies and fake presumptions about the opposite sex add to tensions often found in the dating scene. Then, through a semi-improvisational scene, the presenters demonstrated how these and other factors can lead to sexual assault.

The scene enabled audiences to recognize the true nature of rape and to place full responsibility with the rapist, alleviating the burden of blame from the victim.

“The show opened my eyes to different situations and made me realize that it’s okay to say no,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Jensine Vallecer, 633rd Medical Group technician. “It was entertaining, but also educational and I know that if I were ever put in an uncomfortable situation, I could use what I learned and know where to go to get help.”

“Sex Signals” challenges audiences not to mislabel coercive behavior as seduction and to reexamine cultural pressures that too often hold victims of rape responsible for their own vulnerability.

“We want people to walk away from the show not blaming victims, and willing to hold people accountable for their actions and most of all, we want them to feel inspired,” said Brian Golden, “Sex Signals” presenter. “We want them to be excited to make their community a better place, where violence is not tolerated.”

The “We are Family” campaign and SAPR program help to reinforce Airmen’s commitment to eliminate incidents of sexual assault through prevention and awareness. The 60-day campaign will continue to focus on revitalizing the wingman culture at Langley.

A new fitness center opened July 24 near U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command headquarters at Fort Eustis.

The building is the former TRADOC HQ building number 1501.

"We began planning two years ago after evaluating the need for more fitness space at Fort Eustis," said John Volkers, 733rd Force Support Division director. "We originally planned to expand a current fitness center, but determined a new fitness facility would be more beneficial for the Fort Eustis community."

Without the help of the 633rd Air Base Wing and TRADOC, Volkers said the project might never have been built.

"TRADOC and the 633rd Air Base Wing were really integral in developing this facility," said Volkers. "Without their partnership, this facility wouldn't have become a reality."

Maj. Gen. Bradley May, TRADOC Initial Military Training Center of Excellence deputy commanding general, cut the ribbon for the grand opening of the facility, assisted by Col. William Galbraith, 733rd Mission Support Group commander, Command Sgt. Maj. Jessie Sharpe, 733rd MSG command sergeant major, William Von Ohlen, 733rd Sustainment branch chief, and John Volkers.

The new center is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Monday through Friday, and is closed weekends and holidays. Volkers said the 733rd FSD will survey and test the hours of operation for the next few weeks to determine the best hours to meet the community's needs.

MCRP collects $2 million for Air Force

Through military medical treatment facilities and programs such as TRICARE, the U.S. Air Force has been able to provide care for its past and present Airmen and their dependents.

MTFs and TRICARE cost the Department of Defense billions of dollars each year performing everyday activities such as routine check-ups, treating illnesses and taking care of accident and injury victims. In a case where a third party is responsible for an Airman’s accident or injury, the Air Force has appointed the Air Force Legal Operations Agency Medical Cost Reimbursement Program as representatives to pursue these claims.

“The Medical Reimbursement Program is a judge advocate general initiative for the collection of third party liability

claims,” said Delvin Whitlock, Medical Cost Reimbursement Program regional chief. “These are claims where an active-duty military, retiree or dependent is involved in any type of accident or incident in which the Air Force has to pay for medical costs. Under the Federal Medical Care Recovery Act, we can pursue reimbursement of the costs for that medical treatment from liable third parties and their insurance companies.”

MCRP boasts a staff of 54 paralegals and four attorneys serving eight regions across America. At Langley Air Force Base, Whitlock leads a team of seven paralegals responsible for managing all cases in Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

In fiscal year 2012, the team collected $2.3 million of the $20.2 million collected by all eight regions. So far, the team has collected $2 million of the $16.6

million collected across the U.S. this fiscal year. The Funds are directly back to the MTFs and TRICARE to help support the cost of future medical treatment to Service members both on and off base.

Claims pursued by the MCRP can range from car accidents of dog bites. Referrals are usually received through MTFs, TRICARE and attorneys of injured Service members. The MCRP must also be notified when a Service member is injured and is not able to perform his or her job, resulting in lost wages and time. In these cases, the unit of the injured member will be reimbursed for time lost.

The MCRP does not pursue claims against Service members, but requires their support in order to pursue these cases on behalf of the Air Force, helping preserve medical benefits for future generations.

“A lot of times, it’s injured [Service] members who suffer because medical records or bills don’t get to their attorney to be used in their personal injury claims. We provide injured parties with valuable information regarding procedures and their entitlements in an injury claim, helping them to receive a fair and proper settlement.

We’re also bringing money back to the Air Force that helps with the operating expenses of medical benefits.”

It is essential for Service members to cooperate with the

MCRP in order to save money. By acquiring essential facts about an accident or incident, the MCRP will be able to obtain proper reimbursement, which in turn will provide MTF professionals and TRICARE advisors with more resources to perform their mission.

“The cost of health care is tremendous,” added Larry Passwaters, a paralegal claims specialist. “If we can collect some of that money, it can keep the amount needed by MTFs and TRICARE down and save the taxpayers and the Air Force money.”

Military working dog teams earn their certication

U.S. Army Pfc. Brenan Ward, 3rd Military Police Detachment explosive dog handler, and his partner, Marie, are one of six teams to go through an annual certification course July 15-18 at Fort Eustis. During the course, teams demonstrated their ability to perform simple obedience, detection and patrol tasks.The four-day course allowed handlers and their dogs to perform a wide variety of tasks to ensure they are capable of supporting the detachment’s mission.

Military working dog teams from the 3rd Military Police Detachment at Fort Eustis, and the 217th Military Police Detachment at Fort Lee, Va., participated in an annual qualification course July 15-18 at Fort Eustis.

The multi-day course put handlers and their dogs through a variety of scenarios, from locating explosives and narcotics to aggression training that tested their ability to perform daily duties.

“In order for our military working dog teams to support the law enforcement mission here at Joint Base Langley-Eustis or downrange, they have to be certified,” said U.S. Army Capt. Zachary Franklin, 3rd MP Det. commander. “The certification course is also a great opportunity for them to demonstrate skills they’ve learned and perfected throughout the year.”

“We have to certify on different tasks like obedience commands, detection, and patrol,” said Ward. “We had to demonstrate how to search a variety of areas including vehicles, open areas and buildings.”

Additionally, handlers had to demonstrate their dogs’ ability to obey basic commands such as sit, stay and heel, and thier response to search commands for de-

tecting narcotics or explosives, or attacking a fleeing suspect.

“We’ve got a great amount of resources available to us here at Fort Eustis,” Franklin said. “This allows us to put the teams through a wide variety of tasks and events both inside and out.”

After completion of the certification course, handlers and their dogs continue intensive training on a daily basis, ensuring they are able to support their mission.

Army vet reects on his experience at Korean DMZ

The room was no more than 100 square feet, stacked nearly floor-to-ceiling with an eclectic collection of books, 35 mm cameras, metal-detection equipment and military memorabilia.

Shelves full of Civil War-era relics lined the wood-paneled walls. A document written in Korean characters, yellowed from age, hung below: “A letter of thanks; 24th Repl. Co.; To: 1st Lt. Smith.”

Between these historical keepsakes sat retired U.S. Army Maj. E. Vernon Smith Jr. He glanced down at the fading black tattoo on his forearm – the insignia of the 82nd Airborne Division – his eyes tracing its oncedistinct edges, altered with age. Reaching carefully for a delicate black-lacquered box inlaid with mother-of-pearl designs, his eyes grew distant with memory.

“An orphanage in Korea presented this to me,” he began, gesturing to the box.

As a 24-year-old first lieutenant, Smith was stationed roughly 15 miles south of the 38th parallel in South Korea. His unit’s presence provided support after the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed July 27, 1953, ending the war between North and South Korea.

Sixty years later and more than 7,000 miles away at his home in central Virginia, Smith finds meaning in the keepsakes he received and photographs he took during his 16-month rotation in Korea, forever preserving memories of his experience.

The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when roughly 75,000 soldiers with the North Korean People’s Army poured into South Korea across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Republic of Korea to the south and the communist Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north.

Sanctioned by the United Nations, American troops entered the war on South Korea’s behalf shortly thereafter. According to the Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation, more than 5 million Americans

Looking back through photos of his experience while stationed in South Korea after the signing of the armistice, retired U.S. Army Maj. E. Vernon Smith Jr. said one of the hardest things was being away from his family.

served during the conflict, and more than 54,000 lost their lives by its end in 1953.

After more than two years of negotiations with no clear victory, the United States, North and South Korea, and the People’s Republic of China agreed to an armistice to end the stalemate, which included forming a 2-mile-wide border separating the Korean peninsula, known as the demilitarized zone (DMZ).

Smith had served two years with the 82nd Airborne Division before his assignment to Korea. While he didn’t arrive in Korea until three years after the war’s end in the fall of 1956, Smith said its impacts were still evident.

“It was a very different time. It was very bleak and very poor – all shot up,” he said.

“There wasn’t much culture – everyone was just trying to stay alive and recover from the effects of the war.”

As Smith recalled his initial observations, the expression on his face became animated, as if each line and wrinkle told a sentence from his life’s story.

“You would go down to Seoul in a jeep and notice all of the buildings had shrapnel damage and were destroyed,” he continued. “Some of the Korean temples were still standing and we would go through them just touring. I would have an [enlisted man] take me in a jeep up to the 38th [parallel], and we’d look across the DMZ with a telescope and see nothing but the North Korean side of the land. We always expected the

war to start up again, so we were nervous and scared, but we sort of got used to it.”

Assigned as the executive officer of the 24th Infantry Division Replacement Company, which later became the 1st Cavalry Division, Smith’s mission was to oversee the logistics of returning companies and battalions who had served a 16-month rotation in Korea back home, while welcoming and preparing replacement units.

“There were about 200 men on the installation, which was a barbed-wire compound surrounded by guards,” he said. “Replacements were coming in and out every day or two – some would go on the DMZ, some would do motor-pool duty, some just served as a presence. At our compound, you would sort of do the same thing every day.”

To help pass the time and break the monotony, some of the Soldiers in Smith’s compound read or slept in their off-time, but Smith had a more creative desire. He took up photography, feeling compelled to document his surroundings and the people he saw during this time in history.

“I wanted to preserve my memories of the assignment, and remember such a poignant time in our military history. I had a 35 mm camera, and even had a little dark room in my hooch,” he said. “I loved taking pictures of people. It was my first time abroad, and being 24 years old, seeing hardship and suffering made people very interesting to me.”

During his rotation in Korea, he learned of a local orphanage near the compound. After visiting the children and seeing their poverty, he felt a sense of duty to help.

“They looked sad. No toys, no clothes.

They made their clothing out of anything they could find, mostly GI blankets,” he said. “I wrote home to my wife at the time and my parents, and they went around the town and gathered toys and clothes and sent them to me. I took them to the orphanage, and did that five or six more times over the course of several months.”

He recalled how excited the children were when he came to the orphanage, especially when he brought them Christmas gifts during a visit. Still holding the box in his weathered hands, he motioned to the framed document written in Korean.

“The people in charge there presented me with this box and that letter, thanking me,” he said. “I was really grateful, but didn’t think I had done anything special.

I just wanted to help.”

Setting his treasured box aside for a moment, Smith retrieved a tin container that had been tucked inside a closet. Inside were hundreds of slides he had made from pictures he took in Korea.

He set up his projector and began feeding slides through. Some were of local villagers, some of the children from the orphanage and others of military life on the compound. He explained the stories behind the slides, his recollection as vivid as if he had left yesterday.

While he found some comfort through photography, Smith said the hardest part of his rotation was being away from his family. Smith and other Service members were scheduled to end their tour in 1958. A portion of their trip home would take them under the well-known bridge in San Francisco, so they coined a motto: “The Golden Gate in ‘58!”

“Everyone looked forward to going home, and when you were a ‘short-timer,’ meaning down to your last month, you

would go and buy a bottle of Seagram’s VO whisky, which came with a little brown and orange ribbon on the bottle top,” he said.

“You would take off that ribbon and tie or pin it on your fatigue cap so everyone knew you were about to leave. When it came my turn to pin it on my cap, I was proud to have served my time, but ready to go home.”

As he continued to feed slides through the projector, Smith explained the significance his experience serving after the Korean War had on him.

“I don’t think I did anything special, I was just one more young officer there, doing his part for the mission,” he said. “I made the best of my time, did my job and served my country, but I feel like that was the first instance we didn’t finish a war. It upset me that we served and [the war] didn’t really get finished, so as a country and a world, we must always learn from history in moving forward in any type of military mission.

When you fight a war, don’t settle for anything less than victory so our troops’ sacrifices won’t be in vain.”

Placing the slides back in the box, Smith explained his passion to document history that began in Korea has stuck with him throughout his life, where he has found enjoyment writing editorials on current events and unearthing Civil War relics.

“There is much to learn from history,” he said. “The past shapes us into who we are today, and if we pay close enough attention, we can use those lessons to shape our future.”

Smith looked to the ground and seemed to drift into a memory. Appearing lost in thought, a few moments later, his eyes began to water. He let out a deep sigh.

“Being in the military made me proud then,” he said. “And I am still.”

Smith’s weathered hand extended to grasp the black-lacquered box. He briefly opened it, as if the memories of his experience in South Korea were contained inside. He carefully set the box in its place on the shelf amongst the array of military relics, where it would continue to serve as a reminder of the orphaned children who once wore clothes made from GI blankets, their delighted faces forever etched in his memory.

‘Trident Warriors’’ test technology during exercise

U.S. Air Force and Navy units participated in the Trident Warrior 2013 exercise over the Atlantic Ocean near the Hampton Roads, Va., area, July 8-19.

The exercise tested an experimental Joint Tactical Information Distribution System between fourth and fifth-generation fighters, and included F-22 Raptors, F-15 Eagles, F-15 Strike Eagles, F-18 Hornets, T-38 Talons and E-2 Hawkeyes from various installations including: Langley Air Force Base, Va., Naval Air Station

Oceana, Va., Naval Station Norfolk, Va., and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., as well as various Air National Guard and reserve units.

JTIDS uses a data link, which is a network radio system designed to meet the requirements of modern tactical air combat. It provides reliable situational awareness to multiple pilots by sharing pertinent information through high-speed, jam-resistant, secure computer-to-computer connectivity.

Previously, fifth generation aircraft were only able to share sensor information with fighters of the same generation,

while older jets could only send information to their more technologically advanced counterparts. The new technology will allow both generations of airframe to pass information freely.

According to U.S. Air Force Capt. Pete Tymitz, 94th Fighter Squadron flight commander, if implemented, the technology will afford pilots the opportunity to share tactical information between all aircraft, forming a combined vision during combat operations.

“This system will let us work off of each others’ strengths to minimize our weakness-

ess,” he said. “We will be able to o increase lethality without in ncreasing the need for more [aaircraft] or potential risk to ou ur pilots.”

Tymitz said integrating fig ghter data-sharing will give piilots information at their fingeertips while reducing the neeed for radio communicatio ons, providing them more tim me to focus on combat.

“This data link will give us a holistic view of what we are fig ghting against so we can focu us on tactics without the neeed for constant updates,” saaid Lt. Col. Brian Beales, 1st Fiighter Wing Plans, Programs an nd Evaluations Office chief.

“Without that whole picture, the chances of loss of life or resources can increase greatly.”

During testing, pilots were divided into two teams titled “Blue Force” and “Red Force,” and pitted against each other in simulated aerial combat. The blue team played as American forces while the red team simulated enemy tactics to fully test the data link’s capabilities in a realistic setting.

The pilots felt the experiment provided a unique testing environment, and enhanced training with Service members from other units and military branches.

“Giving our pilots the op-

portunity to fly with the wide range of airframes will make us stronger,” said Tymitz.

“Stepping out of our norm keeps [us] sharp and flexible.”

While this exercise helped keep the participating pilots versatile, many felt the challenging conditions laid the ground work for future joint operations.

“The more [the services] work together to learn each other’s strengths and weakness, the more we improve as a whole force,” said Beales.

“When we eventually deploy together, it’s important we’re all on the same [page] and fighting the same fight.”

In the future, Army aircraft may be made of all composite materials, and the Prototype Integration Facility Advanced Composites Laboratory is ready.

Part of the Aviation and Missile Research Development and Engineering Centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (AMRDEC) Engineering Directorate, the Prototype Integration Facilityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, (PIF), Advanced Composites Lab has successfully designed and made repairs on damaged composite aircraft components for several years now.

From research and development to implementation and rapid prototyping, advancing composites technology is one of AMRDECâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s core competencies that enables the current and future force.

The PIF Advanced Composites Lab is one of several teams at the AMRDEC working with composites.

Composite materials are a combination of materials that, when combined, produce a new material with characteristics different from the individual components. Examples of composite materials are ďŹ berglass, Kevlar and carbon ďŹ ber. Composite materials may be preferred for many reasons, including increased strength, reduced weight, and reduced production and sustainment cost. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have gotten as strong and as light as we can get with metals, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re at the end of what metals can economically do,â&#x20AC;? PIF Advanced Composites Lab lead Kimberly Cockrell said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The only way to get stronger and lighter and more capable for the ďŹ ght is to go to composites.â&#x20AC;?

PIF leadership recognized a need for advanced composites repair and began developing a composites capability within the PIF mission to provide rapid response solutions to the warďŹ ghter. The program includes repair design and engineering substantiation to show that repaired components are returned to original strength.

The U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Commandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Aviation, and Missile RDEC Prototype Integration Facilityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Advanced Composites Lab is at the forefront of composite repair in Army aviation.

Personnel in the PIF Advanced Composites Lab designed and developed repairs for damaged composite stabilators on the UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter and the AH-64E Apache helicopter. Prior to their repair method, the only way to repair an aircraft with a damaged stabilator was to pull off the broken stabilator and replace it with a new one.

Cockrell said the â&#x20AC;&#x153;pull-and-replaceâ&#x20AC;? approach was costing the Army up to six ďŹ gures per stabilator replacement.

While the ďŹ rst repair procedures were designed for Black Hawk stabilators, the repair method applies to any solid laminate or sandwich core composite structure, so the procedures and training can be leveraged to other Army aircraft.

Cockrell is proud of the labâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s achievements. Its repair procedures are the ďŹ rst approved repair for primary composite structure on Army aircraft.

With integral support from the AMRDECâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Aviation Engineering Directorate, the procedures for the composite stabilator repairs have been written and are undergoing approval

for release by the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Life Cycle Management Command (AMCOM) Logistics Center.

An important aspect of developing repair methods is working with the repair personnel who will make the repairs. Members of the PIF Advanced Composites Lab have been training Soldiers on the new stabilator repair procedures prior to deployment so that they can request approval to use them, on a case-by-case basis, through the Aviation Engineering Directorate.

The lab has also trained the instructors at the 128th Aviation Brigade, as well as the AMCOM logistics assistance representatives.

In addition to training, the PIF Advanced Composites Lab, in partnership with the Aviation Engineering Directorate, played a lead role in developing the Army Technical Manual 1-1500-204-23-11 â&#x20AC;&#x153;Advanced Composite Material General Maintenance and Practices,â&#x20AC;? as well as in deďŹ ning the tooling and material load for the new AVIM composites shop set.

And in addition to repair solutions, the lab is using composite materials to create solutions for other issues. For example, it has designed and built a composite doubler to strengthen the hat channels that extend from the hinges of the UH-60 engine cowling.

“When the aircraft is on the ground being maintained, the engine cowling folds out to become a maintenance stand,” Cockrell explained. “Two Soldiers can stand up there with a tool box and work on the engine. Unfortunately, minor damage to those hat chan-

nels can cause these (cowlings) to catastrophically fail and seriously injure the Soldiers.”

It’s concepts like that, Cockrell said, that the lab is introducing to program managers to show how the lab can help with more than just repairing stabilators.

“Our goal is to transition the stabilator repair business to other sources of supply, because we know that as soon as we get these repairs fully fielded, there will be new structures and composites issues for us to work,” Cockrell said. “The Apache composite tailboom, new composite cabin frames, new composite cabin floors, and new composite blades are all coming down the pike.”

“We help move up to 10,000 vehicles through the gate every day,” said Sgt. 1st Class Mustafa Amin, 2nd Platoon Sergeant.

“Our job here is critical to both base safety and maintaining our proficiency as Soldiers.”

Amin explained working the gate not only supplements his Soldiers’ training, but unifies them as a team.

“Working seven days a week really demonstrates service before self, and they never complain about it,” said Amin. “They have the opportunity to speak with civilian law

enforcement personnel and learn a thing or two about protecting and serving.”

Crowley said Soldiers also realize the impact and importance of their mission and the threats they face every day.

“The training they receive before being put on duty is realistic; it shows them what happened in the past, and how it can happen out of nowhere,” said Crowley. “They learn not to get complacent, and it reinstates the reality of threat.”

Crowley believes his platoon will carry out this duty with flying colors, a claim he bases on the confidence, dedication and vigilance they have continued to display.

“I live on the installation, so to me this job is real,” said Crowley. “I know these guys are charged to keep my family safe, and I know they do it well.”

Teamwork returns eagle to sky

He held the bird out in front of him and let her go; she ďŹ&#x201A;ew low, gained height and continued to soar towards the James River. More than a month ago this eagle could not ďŹ&#x201A;y.

The eagleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s road to recovery and freedom would take a dedicated team of people, medication, ďŹ&#x201A;ight training and more than a month of healing, but she would ďŹ&#x201A;y again.

The eagle was discovered May 18 at Fort Eustis by two members of the community who contacted Christopher GrifďŹ n, 733rd Security Forces Squadron game warden, when they spotted it lying on its back with a possible broken wing off of Harrison Road, near the James River.

GrifďŹ n notiďŹ ed Timothy Christensen, 733rd Civil Engineer Division installation natural resources manager, and they went to investigate. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When we went to assess the eagle, it was capable of standing and walking and was very alert, but it could not ďŹ&#x201A;y, which meant there had to be something wrong with it,â&#x20AC;? said Christensen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You should never be able to walk right up to an eagle and it not ďŹ&#x201A;y away.â&#x20AC;?

Although injured, Christensen said the eagle was still a challenge to capture, due to environmental conditions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was difďŹ cult to capture the eagle due to the forested and swampy conditions,â&#x20AC;? Christensen said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It took [Chris and I] 30 to 45 minutes to capture it and bring it out of the woods to

place in an animal carrier.â&#x20AC;?

Since there was a good chance the eagle would survive, Christensen and GrifďŹ n sent it for rehabilitation.

As part of the rehabilitation process, the injured eagle was brought to military veterans James Beamer Jr. and his wife Pearl, directors of Sacred Friends Inc., a non-proďŹ t organization that takes care of sick and injured wildlife, who worked with veterinarian Dr. Tony Poutous from Midway Veterinary Hospital in Chesapeake, Va., to treat the eagle. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thankfully this eagle didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have too many injuries,â&#x20AC;? Poutous said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There was some bruising and contusions, and her beak was chipped off a little bit, but nothing was broken.â&#x20AC;?

Poutous prescribed antibiotics, rest and ďŹ&#x201A;ight training for when the eagle began to recover. He then left the bird in the care of the Beamers.

Pearl and James provided the eagle with a clean cage, fresh water, food and medication on a daily basis, hoping it would lead to a quick recovery. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We injected antibiotics into the eagleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s food, because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s less stressful on the animal,â&#x20AC;? Pearl said.

Once the eagle underwent ďŹ&#x201A;ight training and was healthy enough to ďŹ&#x201A;y without difďŹ culty, she could be released back into the wild.

According to James and Pearl, it was evident the eagle was ready to return to its home. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The eagle acted like it would rather be someplace else than here,â&#x20AC;? said Pearl. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every animal has a personality and each oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s different; this eagle

was not friendly and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the way it should be.â&#x20AC;?

Everyone involved in the rehabilitation met at Fort Eustis on June 22 to set the eagle free in her natural environment, close to where she was found.

However, there was one more thing to do before she could take ďŹ&#x201A;ight. She would need to be banded.

Bands are primarily used to study and track the movement, survival and behavior of birds. The eagle was measured and ďŹ tted with two bands by Reese Lukei Jr., volunteer bird bander.

One band was a U.S. Geological Survey band and another purple band identiďŹ ed the eagle as being from the Chesapeake Bay region.

Now she was ready to ďŹ&#x201A;y.

Poutous ensured he held the eagle correctly so she could take off without any problems, then let her ďŹ&#x201A;y back into the wild. She ďŹ&#x201A;ew toward the James River and out of sight. Moments later, she was spotted with a ďŹ sh in her talons.

Many of the onlookers were excited to see this eagleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ&#x201A;ight and the return of its natural behavior. For James and Pearl, their role in the eagleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recovery held a deeper signiďŹ cance. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[My wife and I] were both in the military and we support all the troops,â&#x20AC;? said James. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My blood runs red, white and blue-to see this bird released on Fort Eustis was an added incentive.â&#x20AC;?

Perhaps when people spot eagles ďŹ&#x201A;ying high in the skies above Fort Eustis, they will remember this oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s story and the teamwork it took to help her ďŹ&#x201A;y again.

When planning a trip outside of the U.S., there is more for Service members to consider than which bathing suit to pack or what attractions to visit.

Individuals with a Department of Defense-issued security clearance can become victims of crime and violence, and other difficulties while traveling abroad. To help prepare, the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations at Langley Air Force Base, conducts mandatory travel briefings for Service members.

“We want to protect our people by giving them the information to detect when someone is targeting them,” explained Special Agent Cyrus, AFOSI counter intelligence. “We want people to be able to come back to us after their trip and report if any incidents occured, so we can push that information to the highest level.”

Preparing for a trip outside of the U.S. requires a certain amount of planning and decision making, said Cyrus. Choosing a safe destination is vital, as well as knowing what to pack and what to leave at home.

According to the U.S. State Department, safety while traveling internationally starts when you pack. To avoid becoming a target, a traveler should try not to look like a tourist, but rather to blend in with the local population. Traveling light and limiting number of valuables also helps reduce unwanted attention.

Research is also important before traveling, according to the U.S. State Department. Once a traveler is outside of the U.S., they are no longer under the protection of U.S. laws.

According to Cyrus, travelers should also be aware of terrorist activities. AFOSI is seeing more attempts of foreign collection, which is the attempt of gathering information in a non-volatile way, instead of actual targeting of an individual for violence, explained Cyrus.

“I think the most effective [aspect of] our training is knowing countermeasures,” said Cyrus. “We are teaching the individuals not only how to identify when they are being targeted, but also how to respond.”

The training that AFOSI conducts is mandatory for individuals traveling outside of the U.S. The travel briefing is valid for one year, and is designed to instill a sense of vigilance and provide a skillset for travelers to protect themselves and government information.

Langley Chapel’s Single Airmen Ministry provides spiritual care

For some Airmen, joining the military and living in the dormitories may be their first time away from home, and being geographically separated from family and friends and surrounded by new faces may be difficult.

Airmen at Langley Air Force Base have a way to maintain their spiritual readiness while enjoying the benefits of social environments. Luckily, a prior-service couple, in conjunction with the Langley Chapel, helps bring Airmen together.

The Langley Chapel Single Airmen Ministry program is sponsored by the Protestant Chapel Ministry to help support the morale and spiritual lives of Airmen living in the dormitories, by offering an opportunity to connect with a community of believers who are interested in religious discussion and Bible study, said Larry Blakely, Single Airmen Ministry coordinator.

“The Single Airmen Ministry provides a foundational strategy and guiding principles to deliver ministry and spiritual care to Airmen,” said Chaplain (Capt.) Michael McDonald, 633rd Air Base Wing chaplain.

Larry and Brender “BB” Blakely, the LCSAM coordinators, have worked with Airmen ministries for as long as they can remember. They see it as a means of giving back by serving Airmen while positively impacting their lives.

“We see ourselves as a type of ‘sounding board,’ or someone Airmen can talk to,” said Mrs. Blakely.

“The LCSAM is a multiplier program that provides instant grounding, based on personal core values. From that, [Airmen] are able to be good wingmen to help other new Airmen who are trying to establish themselves in their new job, home and military,” said McDonald. “Airmen are able to find friends at the LCSAM in an environment that may avoid some of the unhealthy influences.”

The LCSAM hosts meetings on base in the office located on the first floor of Boots Hall, one of the dormitories on Langley.

In addition to the meetings on base, the Blakelys have opened up their home as another meeting place and a “hospitality house,” offering homecooked meals, games, Bible study and movies for Airmen.

For Airmen like King, finding a place that gives family-like support helps ease the transition during his time at Langley.

Through ministry support and the spiritual journey of Airmen, the LCSAM builds leaders of faith and moral character, promotes activities that help Airmen develop healthy relationships and value service to others.

Senior U.S. Air Force leaders from the 633rd Air Base Wing officially opened the newly constructed LaSalle Avenue Gate at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Langley Air Force Base, July 19.

The LaSalle Gate renovation was the second and final phase of recent construction efforts and now boasts three inbound and two outbound traffic lanes, an inspection lane and an environmentally friendly Visitors’ Control Center with an extended parking lot.

According to Paul Petersen, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron architect, the 2,700 square-foot visitors’ center will serve as a fully-operational pass and identification center, providing an efficient, professional experience for those interested in entering the installation. “[This gate] can be the first thing a visitor will see when coming to Langley, and it will provide the first image of the base,” he said.

“It’s important to provide an image becoming of the military, while helping the visitor.”

Aside from providing a professional image, the center was designed with sustainability and local ecology in mind.

The building is outfitted with high-level windows to provide increased natural

lighting, decreasing the need for overhead lights, a sun shade to decrease the output of an air conditioning unit during the summer months, and water catch basins to reduce harmful erosion and runoff into the nearby bay.

Upon completion, the center received a silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating from the U.S. Green Building Council.

LEED is a rating system developed by the USGBC designed to provide building owners and operators a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.

The center was graded on five areas of quantifiable green initiatives including site sustainability, indoor environment, recycled resources, and water and electrical efficiency.

“The measures taken to receive a LEED certification save energy and reduce our carbon footprint on the earth,” said Petersen.

“We are not only adhering to the standards the federal government puts on the civilian sector, but we are trying to lead the way.”

The LaSalle Gate is fully operational and open 24 hours a day, while the visitors’ center is open Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 764-7770.
