JBLE celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

To celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, the 93rd Signal Brigade hosted an observance at Wylie Theater on Sept. 22, 2016, here.

According to the Library of Congress, NHHM was initially observed as National Hispanic Heritage Week in September 1968. The commemorative week included September 15 and 16, and also celebrated the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

In 1988, Congress passed Public Law 100-402, which requests and authorizes the President of the United States to annually proclaim September 15 through October 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month. President George H.W. Bush issued the first proclamation in 1989.

“In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor the contributions Hispanics have made throughout our history, and we highlight an important part of the rich diversity that keeps our communities strong,” said President Barack Obama, as part of the 2016 National Hispanic Heritage Month presidential proclamation.

This year’s theme is “Hispanic Americans: Embracing, Enriching and Enabling America.”

As of July 1, 2015, the Hispanic population of the United States totals 56.6 million, and 1.2 million Hispanics or Latinos ages 18 and older are veterans

192nd FW, 27th FS participate in Combat Archer

Members from the 27th Fighter Squadron and the 192nd Fighter Wing returned from Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, Sept. 30, 2016, where they spent three weeks participating in the Weapons System Evaluation Program.

Combat Archer, the U.S. Air Force’s air-to-air Weapons System Evaluation Program executed by the 83rd Fighter Weapons Squadron, serves to evaluate aircraft, weapons, and the Airmen operating and maintaining these items.

“The WSEP evaluates our jets and missiles from cradle to grave,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. David Elliott, 27th FS commander.

“It encompasses everything from the factory build of the weapons, the construction for our ammo troops, the training of the air crews, the maintenance on the airplane and finally the engagement between the aircraft, the pilot and the adversary to make sure that the missile completes the intercept.”

While at Tyndall, pilots assigned to Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia gained experience they may not have received otherwise, to prepare them for combat operations. Airmen from JBLE also worked with members of the U.S. Marine Corps and other Air Force units flying various Aircraft including F-35 Lightning II, F-15 Eagles, F-16 Fighting Falcons and F-18 Hornets.

“It was their first time ever firing a missile for 12 of my pilots,” said Elliott. “Now those pilots have in-depth experience and information that they are then able to share and spread around to other pilots within the squadron and the wing and the rest of the flying community.”

According to Elliott, JBLE Airmen improved their mission capable rate significantly while flying 223 sorties during the program, and will use this training to continue to improve their rate.

“The WSEP program institutes a very specific sortie generation rate which is much higher than their home generation rate, creating a major challenge for the maintainers,” said Elliott.

“These guys were working very hard to make sure that we could continue to fly those airplanes very frequently and successfully.”

Army provides support to family overcoming tragedy

As Paul Bredlau got out of his vehicle, he turned his ball cap around and thought to himself, “Suck it up. I have to find the facts.�

Walking down the road, Paul and one of his son’s friends from his unit found the tire tracks. The tracks led them to the levy that caused U.S. Army Spc. Joshua Bredlau’s vehicle to flip and impact a tree, which took his life instantly.

Paul dug through the grass and debris to find anything that was left. “I distinctly remember these palm trees around the site,� explained Paul. “This helped me because it was kind of like what Jesus went through on Psalm Sunday.

what happened at that time.�

Kathryn Bredlau, Joshua’s mother, said her son had recently returned from his tour in Iraq as a combat medic and reenlisted in hopes of becoming a guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier when the accident happened. “The immediate shock was of how could this happen to us,� recalled Paul. “I remember saying to not lose hope and don’t go downhill.�

To keep on track Paul and Kathryn held on to their strong faith through prayer and utilized the Survivor

Outreach Program at Fort Eustis, Virginia. “It took us a couple of years before we started going to the Survivor Outreach Program meetings,� explained Kathryn. “That was probably a God send in a way because there is no discriminating there.�

The program provided the Bredlau’s a support system of empathy that only those who have also lost a child could give. “Everybody has a horror story and that’s one thing we learned from being a part of the Survivor Outreach Program,� said Kathryn. “There’s a point where you feel all alone and that no one is going through what you’re going through.�

Along with the SOS, the Army provided additional support in various ways to help the Bredlau family. “The Army was definitely on the ball with arrangements from the airports, the funeral home and all the escorts,� said Paul. “Staff Sgt. Pope took great care of us, he drove us where ever we needed to go.�

To keep the memory of their son alive, Paul and Kathryn also bought a farm, which they hope to open as a therapeutic retreat for military families that have suffered the loss of a loved one. “His memory will never be forgotten,� said Kathryn. “He’ll always be with us and it’s nice to know the Army’s not going to forget him either. They will keep his memory alive and we appreciate them for that.�

AFAS programs assist Airmen, families

Established in 1942 as the official charity of the U.S. Air Force, the AFAS, located in Arlington, Va., promotes the Air Force mission by helping Airmen and their families with personal emergencies, educational goals and other programs to improve readiness.

Established in 1942 as the official charity of the U. S. Air Force, the AFAS, located in Arlington, Virginia, promotes the Air Force mission by helping Airmen and their families with personal emergencies, educational goals and other programs to improve readiness.

According to Tanya Jernigan, Joint Base Langley-Eustis Airman and Family Readiness Center community readiness specialist, the society’s three tiers of assistance include community enhancement programs, educational resources and emergency assistance.

“We act as liaisons between the headquarters and service members,” said Jernigan. “We coordinate to ensure that we’re not only providing the necessary assistance and resources, but we also seek their guidance to effectively support the program.”

Two of the most widely-used programs include Falcon loans and standard emergency assistance. Falcon loans feature interest-free loans of $750 or less and are used to meet short-term emergency needs.

For requests that do not fall within Falcon loan guidelines, a standard emergency assistance application is required, which may involve additional documentation. For example, financial assistance can be provided for food, car repair, rent payments, emergency travel or other nofault hardships.

“Our job is to pull back the layers and assess to verify if there is a valid need,” said Jernigan.

Other financial assistance resources include a personalized financial review and referrals to local consumer counseling agency partners. Jernigan said the

center’s accredited financial counselor can provide free credit scores for Airmen and their families.

Next, the community enhancement programs tier includes Give Parents a Break child care, Bundles for Babies gift cards, Child Care for permanent change of station program, a phone card program for deployed Airmen and family child care providers for people volunteering at Langley.

“Our Heart Link program is for families that are new to the Air Force to get them acclimated to the military way of life,” said Jernigan. “We encourage our service members to get the information out to their spouses so they can come in and start establishing relationships.”

The AFAS also has a program designed to keep the primary family vehicle of deployed Airmen in good running condition. The Car Care Because We Care oil change program provides assistance for preventive vehicle maintenance on a one-time basis.

In addition, oil change vouchers are provided to Airmen deployed for more than 30 days, on one year remote assignments and first-term Airmen assigned to their first duty station.

“The [Air Force Aid Society] is a great non-profit designed for service members and their families,” said Sarah “Sally” Corey, A&FRC supervisory community readiness consultant. “They do so many great things and families need to take advantage of the programs that they provide.”

Finally, the educational resource program features the General Henry H. “Hap” Arnold Grant program. The competitive grant program provides need-based assistance to Airmen and their families.

“The readiness center also provides readiness outreach counselors who are assigned to different squadrons,” said Jernigan. “We always ask the commanders and first sergeants for their support as we visit squadrons to discuss our valuable outreach services.”

Operating as a non-profit organization and funded entirely by donations, the AFAS’s assistance programs are open to active-duty Airmen, retirees and Air National Guard and Reserve personnel on extended active-duty over 15 days, under Title 10 orders.

It was a Friday morning at Hampton High School, and the halls were abuzz with students laughing and talking about weekend plans. The bell had just rung, and many students began filtering into the library.

The students’ voices quieted down, and they took their seats at a group of round tables.

Their conversations had shifted from the latest pop songs, to fighter jets, weather and math. Sitting among the students were two men in military camouflage.

They clearly were not part of the student body.

These men were actually Airmen from the 1st Operations Group at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia U.S. Air Fore Staff Sgt. Mark Green, 1st Operations Support Squadron airfield management NCO in charge, and Senior Airman Seth Morgan, 1st OSS airfield systems technician, are part of the 1st OG’s Real Access to Diversity team. Their attendance at the school was not to catch up on the latest teenage trends, but to incorporate real-world lessons into the students’ curriculum.

The RAD team is comprised of Airmen who mentor students in science, technology, engineering, and math classes on the practical application of STEM principles.

STEM is an educational initiative that incorporates technology and engineering into traditional fields of math and science.

According to Green, the RAD team compliments teachers’ lessons by explaining how aspects of STEM are applied in their daily Air Force duties.

“It gives us that moment to where we get ‘re-blued,’” said Green. “It brings us back down to the ground because we do it every day, so when we see the kids grasp this information because we are out here showing them ‘Hey, what you’re learning, we’re actually using that same material out in the real world,’ it’s a very humbling feeling.”

Airmen fly, pay homage to fallen aviator

GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind. — Army Air Corps 1st Lt. Robert McIntosh, 27th Fighter Squadron pilot, was honored Sept. 29 with a flyover in Tipton, Indiana by a formation of F-22 Raptor fighter aircraft.

McIntosh was a fighter pilot during World War II whose plane, a P-38 Lightning, disappeared in Italy on May 12, 1944.

they were happy to have closure about what happened to their brother and are very glad the Air Force did so much to honor his memory and sacrifice.

“We are so pleased that he finally made his way home to us,” said Baker-McIntosh. “We are a military family from the word go and our mother and father would be so happy to know what happened to him. Mom had hope that his remains would be found until the day she died.”

“We are ecstatic that the Air Force is putting forth all this effort for our brother,” said Talley, echoing her sister’s thoughts. “We are amazed by the deep respect that is being shown by the Air Force.”

The Raptors selected to perform the flyover were from the same 27th FS McIntosh flew with. The 27th FS is now based out of joint base Langley-Eustis, Virginia and flying the F-22.

Capt. Justin, 27th FS pilot, one of the pilots who performed the flyover, said he was honored to participate in the event.

“It’s awesome we have the opportunity to give him the respect that he deserves,” said Justin. “We have the privilege of being the oldest fighter squadron in the Air Force. All of that history makes me proud of my job, my squadron, Lieutenant McIntosh for his sacrifice and proud of the Air Force and what we do.”

McIntosh’s plane was the last in a formation that was returning to base following a mission. Due to the poor weather conditions at the time the formation was told to fly up over the storm however McIntosh never made it above the clouds, his plane was last seen diving through the storm.

In September 2013, the Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office (now DPAA) received information from private citizens regarding the partial excavation of a crash site in Santa Cristina, Italy. The citizens found evidence which confirmed this was McIntosh’s crash site.

In August 2015, a DPAA recovery team helped excavate the crash site.

To identify McIntosh’s remains, scientists from DPAA and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory used

mitochondrial DNA analysis, which matched two sisters, as well as dental and anthropological analysis and circumstantial evidence.

The 27th Fighter Squadron has been active since World War I, at the time called the 27th Aero Squadron, flying various aircraft. Most recently the 27th FS has been given the task of flying the F-22 Raptor.

The F-22 Raptor entered service in December of 2005 and was designed to be an air superiority fighter. The F-22 is considered critical to tactical air power by the Air Force. The F-22 Raptor fact sheet is available here.

The 434th ARW is the largest KC135R Stratotanker unit in the Air Force Reserve Command. Men and women from the Hoosier Wing routinely deploy around the world in support of the Air Force mission.

JBLE Family Child Care Program The Joint Base Langley-Eustis Family Child Care Program is looking for child care providers. They are searching for those interested in a professional, portable career that will allow those to stay at home and run a home-based business.

The program is available for children ages two weeks to 12 years old. Child care providers must be at least 18 years old be able to read and speak English, be in good health, and willing to undergo a background check.

The FCC will provide training and materials to get your business started. Training may include First Aid, CPR, health, safety, developmentally appropriate practices and child guidance. All individuals providing child care in their home for more than 10 hours a week must be licensed.
