When wounded U.S. Service members redeploy from combat zones, they are met with a multitide of physical therapy, counseling and rehabilitation measures aimed at getting them back on their feet and in the fight. Of all the methods to help get wounded warriors feeling like themselves again, few would imagine the game of golf to be in their rehab routine.

Ask pro-golfer Andy Weissinger, and learn why he says the so-called “gentleman’s game” is the foundation of his program that breathes new life into wounded Service members.

Weissinger, an instructor with the Professional Golfers’ Association of America, leads the Warrior Transition Unit Golf Program at Eustis’ Pines Golf Course, which introduces injured Soldiers to the game of golf via an eight-week clinic. The goal is to get the troops involved in therapy, both mentally and physically, and able to enjoy themselves through sports within their limitations.

Baby steps The program began seven years ago, as the WTU began receiving more Soldiers in need of post-injury rehabilitation in the wake of two ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Weissinger had developed the “PT Golf” program at the Pines, a fast-paced golf regimen in which Soldiers would run from hole to hole, promoting cardiovascular training. Several wounded warriors wanted to participate in the program, but were physically unable to given the nature of their injuries.

Weissinger noticed other PGA pros offering programs suited for disabled golfers, and began developing the idea for a golf clinic to benefit wounded warriors.

He lobbied for the benefits of golf at WTU town hall meetings, appealing to company commanders and medical professionals, and soon received their blessing.

“The first few times, we did it in con-

junction with the PT Golf program. But as opposed to running the golf course, we brought them out and did a putting clinic,” he explained. “We showed guys with back injuries and leg problems that we could find a way for them to putt the ball and get it in the hole. It gave a lot of hope to those who once played and didn’t think they’d play again, and we got new guys to play who’d never given it a second thought.”

As more Soldiers came to learn and play, Weissinger began to invite WTU leadership and nurse case managers out to the Pines to see first-hand how his instruction helped players. He worked with case managers to fit golf into rehabilitation plans, even leading providers through an abridged clinic to demonstrate how he used tools and methods in the clinic.

“Once we had the case managers and therapists come see what we were doing, they were hooked,” he said. “They really got behind the program.”

Finding the fairway Weissinger, alongside fellow PGA pro Chip Olenick, designed the clinic to instruct participants how to play golf in a way that works within the boundaries of their physical abilities, placing emphasis on safety and rehabilitative methods.

“So many people view golf as something you need to be ultra-flexible for. We were able to think outside the box and find a way within their limitations to play the game,” said Weissinger. “Sometimes we deal with Soldiers who have severe physical limitations, such as lower body immobility or amputees. We ensure they are given a tailored approach, teaching them how to use specialized equipment and methods so they can play.”

The eight-week program begins with an introduction to the game of golf and an explanation of expectations. Players are shown the tools of the trade, provided training and introduced to the physical aids available to them. Most importantly, Weissinger and his staff promote the spirit of fun and comfort, fostering an atmosphere of patience, acceptance and confidence in participants.

“It’s not a competition – we’re out here

to have fun. If you can’t play to have a good time, you shouldn’t play,” Weissinger said. “We relate golf to life that way.

We want the Soldiers to be relaxed when they come out. That’s as important to us as actually playing the game.”

The first training involves putting. Golfers start as close to the hole as possible, and move further away. This trend continues throughout the course, as participants move toward course play.

“After putting, we do chipping the next week, then pitching, then to the driving range for full swings. From there we introduce the foundation of the golf swing waist high swings,” Weissinger explained.

“It all leads to the final session for qualified participants where we fit them with clubs and get them onto the golf course.”

“Andy and I will tailor a swing to fit the needs of a Soldier,” Olenick added. “It is really neat watching their swings develop.”

Weissinger worked with the Salute Military Golf Association, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Maryland, to give golfers who complete six of the eight weeks a free, custom-fitted set of golf clubs. In addition to the custom rigs, course graduates can also play golf at the Pines Golf Course at no charge.

‘The new normal’ Army Sgt. James Robinson, Jr., a 17year Army veteran and medical laboratory specialist, injured his back while serving in Korea, and required surgery. After he arrived at the Eustis WTU for rehabilitation, Robinson decided to see what Weissinger’s program was all about.

“I’d been golfing for seven years before my back surgery, and was offered the opportunity to come get free lessons. I heard there may be free clubs and free rounds of golf involved, so I jumped on it,” Robinson said.

While the custom clubs and professional lessons proved to be excellent benefits, Robinson said his biggest reward was learning a life lesson in patience.

“The game of golf requires patience.

WTU,” he said. “If you get knocked down, you need get back up and do it again.”

“The biggest challenge we face in instruction is time. Sometimes the guys get frustrated. You just put your arm around them and tell them ‘it’s okay,’” said Weissinger. “It’s not beating you, you’re learning to work with your new normal.

It’s my job to find a way to make it work.”

Weissinger shared the story of a Soldier who suffered a stroke, leaving him without full use of his legs. He would ride on a golf cart with his friends while they played at the course, but was unable to tee off himself – until he found out about the WTU Golf Program.

“Upon coming through our program, we were able to teach him how to use the handicap golf cart, and now he can play golf with his friends, not just sit and watch,” Weissinger said.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Ruben L. Daniels, Sr., a unit supply specialist, recently graduated from the WTU Golf Program. He said the instructors completely reinvented how he viewed the game of golf – and how wounded warriors viewed themselves in the process.

It gives us more confidence. We get out here and are a bit timid, but once you take in his instruction and you see the improvement in your game, you really get confident and want to learn more.

“That confidence transcends into your military career.”

‘More than swinging a club’ As the program evolved, Weissinger said mental health providers have expressed increased interest in the psychological benefits of the game.

“It’s getting guys outside engaged in physical activity, getting their mind on something else. If you’ve ever played golf, it takes a lot of focus mentally to figure out what to do and how to do it,” he said. “It takes your mind off negativity.”

“The beautiful thing about golf is it’s a distraction from the pain, personal and mental problems,” Robinson added. “When you’re out here, you’re focused on the golf ball and the course. After playing, you feel great.”

Weissinger said WTU commanders “love it because it gets guys out of barracks.”

“The less downtime they have sitting around getting depressed, the better. It’s been a home run all around, and we see more benefits the more we do it,” Weissinger added.

Esprit de ‘course’ The WTU Golf Program “brings Soldiers a little closer together as a unit,” Weissinger said, attributing the camaraderie to their experience in a more relaxed atmosphere. Company commanders allow Soldiers to visit the course as long as mission requirements or medical appointments are satisfied.

“Appointments are the number-one mission while in the WTU. So if Soldiers have something to do and they can’t be out here for a class, we’ll accommodate that and make sure we get them spun up,” Weissinger explained.

As more and more wounded warriors make their way out to the Pines to partake in the course – Weissinger estimates nearly 160 Soldiers have graduated – Soldiers who have been through the clinics come back after they complete it, whether to help new golfers or just enjoy the game with their “battle buddies.”

“We invite guys that have been through

the program to come back out, and they often do. They’re stepping up,” said Weissinger. “They’re helping the instruction process, bringing others along.

“Guys come back and play through the Pines. I’ve seen as many as 10 individuals come out multiple times,” he added.

“They get bit by the golf bug and come out all the time.”

Growing the game Weissinger has opened the program up to other wounded warriors in the community, including Marines from nearby Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, and even Soldiers making the hour-plus trip from Fort Lee in central Virginia.

“We’re trying to spread the word through the WTU here to community-based WTUs. The popularity has been encouraging to see,” he said. “The free clubs don’t hurt, but the guys that have been through are selling this. Word of mouth is the best advertisement you can get.”

Robinson agreed, calling golf a “great sport for wounded warriors.”

“I want to see more troops going through the program. One thing about the Army is that we love being the best at what we do.

For those that are wounded, there are things we can no longer do,” Robinson said.

“This is something we can still do.

Andy has proven that to us.”

“It’s an honor to teach the game of golf to the men and women of the WTU. I really enjoy teaching the game of a lifetime to our veterans,” Olenick said.

As the program continues to grow and evolve, Weissinger looked back on the progress made in teaching the hundreds of Soldiers that have participated, and said he is “infinitely thankful” to have been able to be part of their lives.

“The biggest reward is seeing the light in their eyes when they understand, ‘no matter what my injury is, no matter what I’m transitioning to, whether its back to active duty or retired life, golf can be part of my life now,’” he said. “Golf has brought me so much joy; just to be able to share that with people is the greatest feeling in the world.”

Golf legend Arnold Palmer once said of golf, “The most rewarding things you do in life are often the ones that look like they cannot be done.” Thanks to Andy Weissinger and his innovative program, Palmer’s golf gospel is proven in the strides – and swings – of Fort Eustis’ wounded warriors, who continue to overcome odds and remain “Army strong.”

Often, when the words “joint-basing” are spoken in conversations between Service members, they invoke a myriad of responses.

This was certainly the case as the Joint Base Langley-Eustis concept was discussed in-depth by senior leadership from both Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis, Va., and the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Sept. 20 and 21.

“Joint basing is hard,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Charles Perham, deputy director of basing with the Office of the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense. “There are 46 separate installation support functions where the services had to develop common definitions for working with one another. The best solutions often bridge across service lines.”

Joint basing began in 2005 after the President passed into law the Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission, which realigned 26 geographically proximate installations into 12 joint bases, with one service taking the lead at each location.

“These [joint] bases have the opportunities to be engines of innovation for the DOD. Even though we merged bases together, we are continually striving to preserve unique service culture and heritage.”

“Joint bases are viewed as national assets,” said Perham. “They are unique and therefore receive a lot of attention.”

Much of that attention focuses on the aims of joint basing, which are to optimize the delivery of installation support – finding the best ways for those 46 functions to work effectively, together and through innovation, developing best practices and efficiencies.

“These bases have the opportunities to be engines of innovation for the DOD,” said Perham. “Even though we merged bases together, we are continually striving to preserve unique service culture and heritage.”

Perham said military innovation exists as a way to introduce new methods and procedures into practices and operations. He said the unforeseen benefits joint basing offers toward innovation and cultural appreciation within the military are tremendous.

“We deploy to joint environments,” said Perham. “A Service member assigned to a joint base as [a] first assignment should have a leg up on a deployment over someone assigned to a regular installation.”

With nearly 900 Service members from Langley and Fort Eustis currently deployed, the benefits to understanding joint service operations can be seen both downrange and at JBLE. “We have a very robust deployment mission built into JBLE,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Korvin Auch, 633rd Air Base Wing commander. “Anyone who has been downrange knows that joint is the way we do business in that environment.”

Auch said the focus of JBLE has always been geared toward completing the mission and meeting the needs of the nation.

“Joint bases are all about the mission,” Auch said. “It’s tougher in a resource-con-

strained environment, but JBLE is successful because we are getting the mission done.”

During these lean financial times, Perham said Service members at all levels have been asked to look for proactive means to save money, manpower and resources. He said the bridge toward the future of joint basing can only be strengthened through education on the joint base concept at all levels.

“The job of the leaders at joint bases is to educate,” he said. “JBLE is unique because its bases are geographically separate; therefore, it brings unique challenges and strengths to the table.”

One of the challenges between Fort Eustis and Langley is communicating well while preserving service culture. Perham said different ways of handling a situation can exist between services, but through cooperation, the final way forward can be stronger, while still respectful of each service’s unique identity.

“Change is difficult,” Perham said. “Joint basing is here to stay. Service members need to be open-minded and ask themselves how they can do their job better in a joint environment.”

Sitting in the recruiter’s office while preparing to sign on the dotted line, think back to what got you there. Was it just one profound moment, or was it more?

Kyle was 24 years old, in college and working three jobs. Financial aid was not an option if he wanted to continue his education, unless he wanted to take out student loans. That is when he started considering other options, and walked into the recruiter’s office.

It was his decision.

“I was proud, and I was happy,” said Senior Airman Kyle Harvey, Air Combat Command Communication Support Squadron operations support technician. “I signed the dotted line because I knew that I had one life and at least for this part of it I wanted to serve my country.”

However, his signature came with misgivings.

“At the time, when I signed the papers, I was really nervous about getting deployed,” said Harvey. “I didn’t want to go to Afghanistan.

I didn’t want to go to Iraq. I was deathly afraid of going overseas.”

After going through basic training and technical school, Harvey’s first, and only duty station so far, was Langley Air Force Base. It was here that Harvey grew into the Airman he is today, gaining experience and learning what he could.

About a year and a half into Harvey’s career, he felt ready to deploy.

All it took was talking to people who had been there.

“I was slated for a deployment to Afghanistan,” said Harvey. “The last week before I was supposed to leave for combat training, I went home on leave and contracted myocarditis [inflammation of the heart muscle] and pericarditis [swelling and irritation of the pericardium, a thin sac-like membrane that surrounds the heart],

secondary to the small pox vaccine.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the vaccine is made from a virus called vaccinia, which is a “pox-type” virus related to smallpox. The smallpox vaccine contains the “live” vaccinia virus.

Harvey’s unit had to send someone else from his squadron to take his place.

“You never know when a task will drop. If we have to task someone at the last minute, they may not be as mentally prepared to go as someone who has had time,” said Master Sgt. Alan Palazo, Air Combat Command Communications Support knowledge enabling flight chief.

The news hit Harvey hard.

“I was really upset,” said Harvey. “I really wanted to be a part

of that brotherhood of people who have been over there and who have served over there.”

It took weeks for Harvey’s heart to recover from the damage it sustained. He was limited in his daily activities, including some basics, like driving.

“I was upset that I wasn’t deploying; however, it was the least of my worries at the time,” said Harvey.

The loss of the deployment itself was not on Harvey’s emotional radar, as the concern for his medical condition dwarfed any other disappointment.

“I was more worried about recovery and not getting medically discharged,” said Harvey.

Through this troubling time in his life, he had friends who helped him through.

“I can’t state enough how wonderful it is to have good friends to take care of you,” said Harvey. “I felt a lot of guilt about ‘letting people down’ and the unfortunate situation of the Airman who had to go in my place on such a short notice.

Dealing with that can be hard.”

Harvey has not had another opportunity, in almost four years of serving, to deploy again. He helps mentor other Airmen who are scared to deploy by first asking them why they are afraid.

Harvey suggests talking with someone who has deployed.

“At the end of the day, the best we can do is talk to them and try to make them feel better,” he said.

With the help of friends, family and coworkers, Harvey was able to make a full recovery and remain in the Air Force.

“It was ironic that a vaccine designed to protect my life cornered me up against my mortality,” said Harvey. “If something designed to help me can kill me, maybe I shouldn’t be so afraid to try something risky.

Sometimes you have to have faith and jump in order to fly.”

In 1945, Congress enacted Public Law 176, which led to the designation of October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This was done to recognize the enormous potential of individuals with disabilities and ensure their full integration into the workforce.

Throughout the month, we recognize their accomplishments and reaffirm our commitment to them, ensuring the opportunities of this great nation are available and accessible to every citizen.

This year’s theme is “A Strong Workforce is an Inclusive Workforce: What Can You Do?” “Employers who ensure that inclusive workplace policies and practices are woven into the fabric and culture of the organization create an environment that encourages all workers – including those of us with disabilities-to work to their full capacity and contribute fully to the organization’s success,” said Kathy Martinez, Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Office of Disability Employment Policy, “[The theme] promotes the benefits of a diverse workforce that includes workers with disabilities, who represent a highly skilled talent pool.”

In the Air Force, individuals with disabilities are making important contributions in the workplace every day. Air Force wide, people with disabilities represent 7.4 percent of the civilian workforce, and people with targeted disabilities (blindness, deafness, paralysis, and mental illness) represent another 0.6 percent.

People with disabilities bring a unique, yet underrepresented perspective of diversity to the workplace. In the Air Force, individuals with disabilities are making important contributions in the workplace every day. Air Force wide, people with disabilities represent 7.4 percent of the civilian workforce, and people with targeted disabilities (blindness, deafness, paralysis, and mental illness) represent another 0.6 percent.

The Program for People with Disabilities is one of Joint Base Langley-Eustis’ special emphasis programs that work with commanders, supervisors and management officials to enhance the employment and advancement opportunities of people with disabilities.

The program does this by identifying and remov-

ing architectural barriers in the workplace, and by providing management recommendations on reasonable accommodations. Also, it assists, counsels and identifies the needs of employees or applicants with disabilities.

The PPD functions to ensure diversity and equal opportunity are prevalent in the civilian workforce.

Improvements are being made; however, more work still remains. As more people with disabilities join the workforce, employment expectations and opportunities for people with disabilities will begin to increase.

In an Air Force focused on innovation, many units have become more creative with their decision-making.

The 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron at Langley Air Force Base is no exception.

With a mission tied to infrastructure, the CE community was tasked with updating its systems, without compromising Langley’s buildings, roads, pipes and other infrastructural components.

Major Jimmy Jeoun, 633rd CES operations flight commander, and his team have stepped up to this challenge.

“Leadership has set out initiatives collectively known as ‘CE Transformation’,” said Jeoun. “For Langley, two major initiatives - asset management and next-generation information technology, - are paramount to our success in this Air Force.”

Asset management is all about changing the way the 633rd CES manages and maintains Langley’s facilities and infrastructure. Instead of the “first-come, first-serve” model used previously, Jeoun and his colleagues are targeting their greatest needs first to ensure limited resources are used wisely.

— Maj. Jimmy Jeoun 633rd CES operations flight commander In order to appropriately manage resources, Jeoun needed to make more informed decisions, weighing mission needs, risks, benefits and lifecycle analyses against cost. He needed to know “where we spend the next dollar.”

The 633rd CES has typically used a number of “legacy” systems to help manage and maintain infrastructure. These systems track costs, manhours, materials and supplies, customer requests and more. Civil engineers require this information to do everything from planning road work to repairing a hanger.

Jeoun and his team needed a real-time data analysis system to help prioritize projects and make sound business-case analyses for funding requests. Leadership examined the latest commercial information technology systems available, and found systems that offered considerable improvements and capabilities to the Langley mission. Once fully implemented, next-generation information technology systems will modernize the 633rd CES systems and allow personnel to manage infrastructure more efďŹ ciently. “With all this new information, the question arose on who would manage it,â€? said Jeoun. “Leadership decided the operations ight will stand up an operations engineering element to handle the management.â€?

The new element will include “degreed engineers, CE controllers and CE planners from various crafts,� such as electrical and structural planners. These individuals know where the most important and the most troublesome infrastructure systems are located.

In conjunction with the new IT, this unit will be able to prioritize maintenance actions and construction projects to ensure proper project execution. Also, the engineers can better conduct “repair versus replace� analyses so the 633rd CES personnel can utilize their limited resources to maximum effect.

Jeoun, his leadership and his team members consider mission assurance and support as top priorities. “The new ‘ops ight of the future’ will ensure that we are devoting our resources on the most important assets ďŹ rst - protecting our critical missions,â€? Jeoun said.

Meanwhile, this Airman may be intent on passing his next assessment before his next performance report closes out, knowing full well there won’t be any markdowns. “But Shirt, its only PT,� doesn’t really deal with the issue, does it?

More often than not, a closed door mentorship session on holding our Airmen accountable for their actions across the unit is all it will take to get a supervisor to realize that a mark-down is the right thing to do.

It’s not a career killer, the Airman can recover.

Moreover, ďŹ rst sergeants are in the business of taking care of people, not just the ones getting in trouble, but the shiny pennies, as well. Not giving a deserving member a mark-down is disrespectful to the folks that are taking care of business every single day. Unfortunately, there isn’t a cookie-cutter approach to how leadership at any level will handle any given situation, but if we cherish our Air Force standards and hold people accountable for their actions, everyone will be taken care of in the end.

TRADOC commander describes key initiatives

“Supporting the current fight,” was among the three areas of focus Gen. Robert W. Cone, commanding general of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, conveyed to Soldiers and defense industry leaders during this year’s Maneuver Conference in Columbus, Ga., Sept. 18.

The annual Maneuver Conference is hosted by the Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning.

“My priority is the obligation and commitment to you, those who have been in the fight or will soon be heading into the fight,” he said. TRADOC currently supports the force by overseeing and providing initial military training, functional training, professional military education, mobile training teams and collective training assistance.

Cone also commented on the capabilities of the Asymmetric Warfare Group that gathers and analyzes relevant information from theater operations and applies its benefits in the training environment across the Army.

prove the operating and generating force.”

Cone’s second area of focus included the structural transition of the force to the Army of 2020. He noted the importance of the Army’s capability to be operationally adaptable and able to win across a full range of military operations.

“The Army must be able to win the fight, first and foremost, and then we must focus on preventing future threats and, thus, develop the force based on these evolving threats,” he said. Building a winning strategy includes the ability to function in a joint operational environment where the Army conducts a wide range of missions, while retaining the ability to focus more narrowly on projecting power to deter and defeat aggression as specific threats emerge worldwide.

The combination of a narrow focus within a wide lens allows the Army to adjust more rapidly to potential threats, he explained.

Human transition was the final area of focus during Cone’s discussion. He explained that TRADOC addresses human transition through the “Army Profession,” leader development, the “Army Learning Model,” “the Squad” and “Doctrine 2015.” A win-

ning strategy in particular must include changes in how the Army develops Soldiers as members of the profession, said Cone.

The Army Profession encompasses defining the Army as a profession, certification, strengthening standards and improving feedback, he said. The Army leader development strategy also entails broadening the knowledge and experience of leaders; better managing “talent;” rebalancing the pillars of leader development through education, experience and training; and developing strategic leaders. Executing the human transition involves developing innovative and adaptive leaders – they are the key to operational adaptability, Cone said.

“Warfighting is a human function, and the most important aspect of achieving the Army of 2020 is how we capture lessons learned,” Cone said.

“As leaders, we must tell our Soldiers how important they are to our Army – they are members of a profession,” said Cone.

“Leaders are responsible for making the hard decisions when it comes to Soldier care.

We, as senior leaders, must make the tough calls as we ask our Soldiers to do the same.”

Airmen celebrate diversity through Heritage Month

Every year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept.

15 to Oct. 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens of Hispanic descent.

The observation started as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson. The week was expanded to a 30day period and officially signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1988.

While most heritage celebrations begin on the first day of their respective months, Sept. 15 is a significant day because it is the anniversary of independence for the Latin American countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and 18, respectively.

Hispanic Heritage Month is one of the many months that celebrate the diversity of the many ethnicities that make up American culture.

“Diversity is what makes America the greatest country in the world,” said Staff Sgt. Kurt Heinz, Hispanic Heritage Council sergeant-at-arms. “It’s paramount to remember the importance of diversity and what each culture brings to this country.”

Heritage Council president, feels that diversity is the cornerstone of any successful organization.

“Every person of every culture brings something new to the table,” she said “Each person’s diverse background and experiences provide a different outlook that benefits everyone as a whole.”

Heinz, originally from Mexico, moved to Ventura, Calif. in 1997, at the age of 12. Unlike the United States, many countries require mandatory military service. Heinz voluntarily joined the Air Force as a way to give back to a nation he felt gave so much to him.

“I am grateful for the opportunities I was given,” said Heinz. “Serving is my way of paying it back.”

The Hispanic Heritage Council will be sponsoring several events throughout the month. The final event of the heritage month will be a Hispanic Heritage luncheon that will include speakers and wing leadership.

The council invites everyone, of all backgrounds and cultures, to participate and enjoy the events.

“I’m proud to be able to share my culture,” said Goris.

While Hispanic Heritage Month ends Oct. 15, it is never too late to celebrate the diversity that brings our country together, and makes it the greatest in the world.

“The American dream is still alive,” said Heinz. “I believe I’ve accomplished it.”

The morning sounds of Langley Air Force Base, Va. seemed to pause as the melodic notes of the Star Spangled Banner floated somberly through the warm air, Sept. 21.

Almost immediately after the last note disappeared among the resurgent hum of birds and insects, a group of six runners appeared in the distance – carrying the POW-MIA flag to its final destination after a run that lasted an entire day.

“It is our responsibility to honor our nation by remembering those who have not returned,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Kevin Robbins, 1st Fighter Wing commander, as he spoke at a remembrance ceremony honoring Service members who were at one time, or still are, prisoners of war or missing in action.

Since its inception on July 18, 1979, the third Friday of every September has been devoted to honoring those individuals who were lost in the fields of battle on some distance shore. According to the Joint POW-MIA Accounting Command, to date, nearly 74,000 World War II Service members are still missing from the ranks of their units.

“You will not be forgotten,” Robbins said to the silent ranks, unable to join the remembrance ceremony. “Never give up, never give in and always strive to come back home.”

Robbins said while he never had to endure the horrors of a prisoner of war camp, the respect and admiration for his fellow Service members who have is always present. Retired U.S. Navy Commander George Coker, a former POW dur-

Coker spent s seven-and-a-half years in captivity.

“I rem member all of it in vivid detail,” Coker said. “Itt was very lonely. I spent three years in solitary. Th here was also a lot of torture.”

Cokerr said the physical torture paled in comparison n to the mental anguish he suffered. To this day, he still has nightmares of his time spent as a POW, from August 1966 until February 1973.

said. “I was completely exhausted, both mentally and physically. If I had to go any longer, I wouldn’t have made it.”

Coker said in order for individuals to survive the kind of torture he endured, they would already need guiding principles in their life. They are not going to suddenly find them during their imprisonment. Even though Coker was sustained by his values, he does still harbor resentment for his time as a POW. “I don’t hate the Vietnamese or Asian people,” he said. “I hate my captors.”

Even after decades apart from his experience, Coker said he is not likely to simply forgive and forget what happened to him and his fellow Service members.

“They brutalized the living daylights out of us,” he said. “They killed some of my friends. I won’t ever forget that.”

Even though his experience still haunts him, Coker said he sustained himself and was able to return with honor by following three major principles - faith, hope and love.

“You’ve got to have faith,” he said. “You have to believe in something more than just yourself.

You also need hope – to know things will get better. Most importantly, you need love. You have to love someone other than yourself.”

Air Force combat-related wounded warriors wishing to continue their Community College of the Air Force education can now do so after separating or retiring, thanks to provisions in the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act. This legislative change supports the secretary of the Air Force’s priority to ensure combat-related wounded warriors receive the services and support they need throughout the recovery process, and also provides a transition into additional educational opportunities through the GI Bill or Veteran’s Affairs Vocational Rehabilitation program.

In order to be eligible, wounded warriors must have been enrolled in a CCAF degree program at the time of separation or retirement; must have been awarded a 9W-series Reporting IdentiďŹ er for combatrelated injuries or illnesses as reected in the military personal system, and have 10 years from their separation or retirement date or from Dec. 30, 2011 if separated/retired between Sept. 12, 2001 and Dec. 30,

2011 to complete degree requirements. “The recent legislative changes expanding CCAF program eligibility to our wounded warriors opens opportunities that would have otherwise been closed – this is great news! “ said Chief Master Sgt. James E. Pepin, the college’s vice commandant. “CCAF degree participation by our separated or retired wounded warriors enables those individuals, who sacriďŹ ced so much for our country, the chance to complete the associate in applied science degree program they were enrolled in during their active service.â€?

The 633rd Air Base Wing and Air Combat Command Headquarters kicked of the 2012 Combined Federal Campaign donation period with a 5K fun-run at the ACC running trail, Sept. 25, at Langley Air Force Base, Va. The run was free and was solely intended to help raise awareness of the upcoming campaign.

“Most people don’t give because of a lack of awareness,” said Master Sgt. Tellas Johnson, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron superintendent of heavy repair, and 633rd Air Base Wing CFC project manager. “Our main goal is to raise recognition of the great things that can be done through the CFC.” September 1 marked the beginning of the annual CFC donation period that will continue through Dec. 15. The Langley campaign started Sept. 24 and will run through Nov. 5, and the Fort Eustis campaign will begin Oct. 1 and run through Nov. 12.

fundraising within the federal service. The CFC was officially founded in 1961 when President John F. Kennedy signed an executive order authorizing the U.S. Civil Service Commission to develop guidelines to regulate fundraising for federal employees.

Today, the campaign is the largest workplace charity campaign in the United States. Each year, more than 350 CFC campaigns throughout the world help raise millions of dollars, and continue to be the largest and most successful work-

place fundraising model in the world.

“The CFC provides an easy avenue for federal employees to donate,” said Senior Master Sgt. Parker, Air Combat Command superintendent of stranded aircraft support team, and ACC CFC project manager. “It is a one-stop-shop for hundreds of charities.”

The CFC strives to ensure that the donation process is simple and versatile. Federal donors can make a one-time payment with cash or check, or have money donated directly from their paycheck in any ongoing increments of their choosing.

“The purpose of the CFC isn’t to burden donors,” said Parker. “It’s to give federal employees a chance to donate to a cause of their choice without any commitment or pressure.”

As well as providing easy and flexible means for federal employees to donate to the charities they hold close to their heart, the Office of Personnel Management ensures all approved charities are fully committed to those they help.

“The CFC has done all the homework,” said Johnson. “All charities are vetted to ensure all donations are going to trustworthy organizations.”

All CFC charities are reviewed annually for evidence that they are providing adequate services to their cause, and have full financial accountability. This is to ensure all donations find their way to those in need.

The Office of Personnel Management has the authority to reject any organization that does not meet the required standards.

Last year, the 633rd ABW and ACC HQ raised more than $580,000 for roughly 4,000 charities worldwide, contributing substantially to the more than $1.83 million raised by federal employees in the Virginia Peninsula area alone.

Donors who pledge $150 or more will be awarded a CFC challenge coin and a Smartcard, which offers unlimited, yearround discounts from local businesses.

Although some may feel that small donations do not make a difference, it is important to remember that all donations go a long way.

“Every little bit helps,” said Johnson.

“Every Airman can make a difference.”

A drive around Fort Eustis,Va., reveals various new buildings - some complete, and some under construction. Several of these structures are barracks buildings, representing more than $120 million the Army has invested since 2007 to provide modernized living spaces for its Soldiers.

The barracks buildings are spread across the post and across a variety of mission sets. permanent party Soldiers, Advanced Individual Training troops, and wounded warriors recuperating in the Warrior Transition Unit all benefit from the new construction and upgrades.

‘Grow the Army’ barracks In 2008, W.M. Jordan Construction began a $27 million construction project on a series of barracks buildings to accommodate 336 permanent party personnel assigned to Eustis’ 7th Sustainment Brigade. Funding for the project came via the “Grow the Army” initiative, a 2007 plan to realign the Army’s forces and increase troop numbers over a six-year period.

According to Randy Brown, a community planner with the 733rd Civil Engineer Division, the barracks, completed in March 2010, include modern comforts, such as private baths, walk-in closets and ample storage space.

The facility boasts activity rooms, mud rooms, visitor areas and a central restroom and vending area. Based on energy efficiency measures built into the design, the barracks earned a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, silver rating.

gade, formerly the U.S. Army Aviation Logistics School, is experiencing a transformation in their training centers and in quality of life for students.

Among the improvements is a fourphase barracks construction project to replace the vintage, 1950s-era housing currently in use. The project began in 2010, with Balfour Beatty Construction completing Phase I in May 2012.

The first phase included a 300-person barracks, complete with day rooms, laundry facilities, computer class rooms, supply and arms storage, and lawn maintenance storage. Outside the building, a quarter-mile track, physical training pits and fitness equipment were installed to keep Soldiers physically fit.

The AIT barracks also received LEED silver certification.

Phase II of the project will include two 300-person barracks buildings, similar to those constructed in Phase I, with the addition of sports courts and infrastructure upgrades. The $41 million second leg of the project will begin this month, with a projected completion date of April 2014.

Phase III is slated to begin in fiscal year

2016, with Phase IV dates to be determined. In total, the final complement of barracks will house 2,100 Soldiers, at an investment of nearly $200 million.

In addition to the barracks, construction is winding down on a new $19 million dining facility. The new two-story, 62,390-square-foot facility will serve 2,600 Soldiers at a time, and replaces two 1950sera facilities and a Vietnam War-era mess hall, effectively combining all student dining in a centralized facility.

“The facility is equipped with a serving area on each floor and provides all the amenities to meet the requirements of the Army to feed today’s 21st century Army student,” said Brown Brown also said the contractor, Mortenson Construction, expects to complete construction in December, and equipment and furniture installation should occur by February 2013.

Wounded warriors campus Fort Eustis is expanding its capability to accommodate and rehabilitate the Army’s wounded warriors at its Warrior Transition Unit. A new Warrior-in-Transition campus is under construction, including a state-ofthe-art, 80-person barracks building, a new Soldier and Family Assistance Center, and company headquarters facility.

The barracks project, which was awarded to Purcell-Lawman in July 2011, is certified LEED platinum status, the highest certification available – the first Army owned and Corps of Engineers-constructed platinum facility. Construction is scheduled for completion in December 2012.

The 733rd CED’s Pandora Howell said the building will include a grey water recycling and reuse system, water heaters supplemented by a solar hot water system, which provides at least 30 percent of the facility’s hot water demand. In addition, ground-coupled geothermal heat ex-

changer systems will be used for heating and cooling, and all traditional lighting will be replaced with ultra-efficient lightemitting diode, or LED, fixtures.

Upgrading and repairing In many cases, preexisting facilities need only upgrades and repair work to bring them up to standard. Since 2007, Sustainment, Restoration and Modernization funding has contributed nearly $15 million in upgrades, with more planned.

Such maintenance projects include new carpeting, paint, bathroom renovations, storm drainage repairs, heating and air conditioning upgrades, foundation repairs and new roofing.

However, new and upgraded barracks merely scratch the surface of the quality of life improvements at Fort Eustis. According to Keith Morrow, the 733rd Mission Support Group deputy commander, change is happening across the post at an unprecedented rate.

Initiatives as part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Act, or BRAC, “Grow the Army,” and Warrior-in-Transition projects supplied funding to drive improvements.

“Fort Eustis hasn’t seen this level of construction in years,” he said. “We’ve seen $500 million in the past five years.

BRAC brought an unprecedented amount of construction to upgrade or add new facilities, primarily focused on new mission partners.”

With improvements scheduled to the Exchange, Commissary, and Morale, Welfare and Readiness facilities, Morrow said the installation will continue to evolve.

“There’s a tremendous influx of capital that is dramatically improving the quality of life for our Soldiers, family members, and civilians that live, work and, serve here,” said Morrow. “These projects have made Fort Eustis an amazing place.”

Journey of hope: Eustis Soldier bikes nearly 800 miles in six days for cancer awareness

With Breast Cancer Awareness Month just around the corner, two Soldiers from the Rapid Port Opening Element, 690th Transportation Detachment, 833rd Transportation Battalion, 597th Transportation Brigade, at Fort Eustis, Va., embarked on a journey of hope, Sept. 17, 2012.

They travelled nearly 800 miles to raise awareness of triple-negative breast cancer in honor of his mother, Michelle McBroom.

Sergeant Douglas A. McBroom, a 24-yearold Corpus Christi, Tex., native and anArmy 88H senior forklift operator, began his bicycle ride in Theodore, Ala., and rode to Corpus Christi, Texas. Spc. James A. Conklin, an 88H cargo specialist, followed Sgt. McBroom in a moving truck. They travelled through Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. By riding more than 100 miles per day, Sgt. McBroom arrived on Sept. 22 in Corpus Christi.

“My family is my strength and my mother is my inspiration,” said McBroom. “After receiving the news of her fight against triple-negative breast cancer, I wanted to find a way to show her my love and support.”

McBroom’s travelling partner shared his view on the journey.

“Riding a bike from Alabama to Texas for charity shows how large this man’s heart is,” said Conklin. “Most people would be mad at the world after learning of their mother’s cancer diagnosis, but Doug took it as a challenge to help others. I cannot describe how honored I am to be part of their fight, to support my friend and his family and to raise awareness about this disease.”

McBroom decided he would set off for home, spreading the word as he went.

“I thought, ‘How could I raise awareness and funds to finding a cure for this awful disease?’,” said McBroom. “That’s when I decided I would ride my mountain bike home, from Alabama to Texas. I quickly created a Facebook page to spread the word and share my experience.”

Mrs. McBroom described her son’s tenacity, and shared her feelings on his endeavor.

“It’s kind of hard to put it into words,” said Mrs. McBroom. “Douglas has always done tremendously – when he sets a goal, he achieves it. Douglas and I have a very special relationship. I am immensely proud of my son.”

In June 2011, Mrs. McBroom was diagnosed with stage-4 breast cancer. After seven months of chemotherapy, one surgery and a month of radiation, she received the good news – she was cancerfree. However, that relief was short-lived.

After a routine body scan, she had devastating news – the cancer had returned. The diagnosis showed she had triple-negative breast cancer. Not only was she fighting for her life again, but she was also fighting against a disease that had no cure.

Breast cancer is generally diagnosed upon the presence, or lack, of three receptors - estrogen, progesterone and human epidermal growth factor two. With triple-negative breast cancer, none of these receptors are found. Although this type of cancer is typically responsive to chemotherapy, it can be particularly aggressive and is more likely to recur than other subtypes of breast cancer.

Since traditional hormonal therapies will not work, more research is needed to find a cure.

“I want to send a message to everyone who is either battling or has been affected by this awful disease – Fight! Fight! Fight!” said McBroom. “And just when you think you’re at your breaking point, dig deep and push through. You are not alone!”

On a typical day at the Fort Eustis, Va., 3rd Port, an individual may catch a glimpse of the U.S. Army’s only causeway unit, which manages a mobile, constructible tool able to withstand the power of the ocean.

The causeway company’s tool is fittingly named the Trident, after the three-pronged staff wielded by the Greek god Poseidon.

The Trident pier is maintained by the 331st Transport Company, 11th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade.

It takes every ounce of muscle and sweat from the approximately 100 Soldiers assigned to the company to assemble the 1,200-foot pier.

The “stabbing of the beach” is the culminating event for the Trident. Steel segments, with the help of compressed air, are assembled in the shape of a trident which will then be slammed into the beach at Fort Story.

The reason for the shape is to better make use of its roll-on and roll-off capabilities, said 11th Transportation Battalion commander, Lt. Col. Karl Linderman. The middle of the three-point ‘spear’ is used for larger vessels to unload the larger equipment and vehicles.

“With roughly 38 personnel, we started the mission at about 7:00 a.m. It is amazing, but not surprising, to see these Soldiers’ motivation. They did so well, we are ahead of schedule,” said Sgt. 1st Class Segun Ayodele, senior stevedore for the 149th Seaport Operations Company, 10th Trans. Batt. “We broke the pieces down and pushed them back on the Cape May’s stern elevator, which lowered them down for the warping tugs to transport.”

After several hours, each section had been unlatched, leading to the dropping of pier sections into the ocean. As the warping tug crew slowly made their way to the stern of the Cape May, the first sections were put together a few hundred feet away. A few seconds later, the nearby warping tug was ready to winch up the next two sections.

“It’s probably going to take a few hours to complete the pier because of the sea. It is a little choppy, but we are putting them together with guillotines and hooks moving it as safely as possible,” said Pfc. Brian Green, watercraft specialist with the 331st Trans.

Co. “The crew does make it easy, because it is a big confidence boost working with people you trust.”

A complete pier can withstand waves up to five feet tall, said Linderman. Strong, almost metallic, rubber pieces attached to the pier, called flexors, allow the pier to ‘flex’ and ride the sea waves. It can hold any large vehicle in the Army.

So much is dependent upon the Trident’s completion, said Linderman.

“When complete, we can use it to offload engineer equipment, graders, bulldozers, Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Trucks, Humvees and Navy vehicles too. In Haiti, where the pier was partially destroyed, we set up adjacent to the pier and helped move thousands of pounds of food, water, medical supplies, vehicles and other items to sustain the country,” said Linderman. “With JLOTS, we get some real good training, and good team work is found everywhere.”

By 4:30 p.m. on the second day, a crowd stood on the shore while three bulldozers mauled the beach, pushing and pulling sand, creating a makeshift duck pond. The water-filled pond will allow the pier to extend beyond the shore above the current sea

level. To onlookers, it seemed to be a large operation in support of a single moment.

“This is like our Super Bowl. This is the years’ biggest event and this is how we show how important we are to the Army,” said 331st Trans. Co. commander Capt.

Christina Shelton. “A perfect example was our recent mission to Antarctica assisting the National Science Foundation.

Their ice pier, which can usually handle the offloading of trucks, containers, heavy equipment and supplies, wasn’t capable this year. We were a great candidate because, compared to civilian sea operations and the Navy, we are very mobile and able to travel around the world by rail, air, and sea. We had a month to prepare, then we headed out the door.”

After the pond was broken, the stage was set for the Trident to makes its initial stab. It took four Landing Craft Mechanized boats to tow the pier in the correct position. The waves were splashing as dolphins, which could be seen in the late-evening ocean, moved away as fast as they could.

There was no mistaking the impact.

The pier had made the stab!

After the pier pierced the beach, the crews moved across the beach with ease, making their way to the buses set to take them home for a much-needed break.

At the end of the day, the Trident is a key tool giving the Army access to landing sites worldwide, whether for combat or disaster relief.

On a cool, late-summer day in Dayton, Oh., a melting pot of Service members and civilians from across the globe tightened their laces and stretched their muscles in preparation for the Air Force Marathon, Sept. 15.

Throughout the event, spectators and supporters watched the runners, and looked for friends or family members among the masses.

Among those masses, 2nd Lt. Melissa Poole, 633rd Medical Group clinical nurse, stood out.

“Honestly, I was shocked that I won [in my category],” said Poole. “I wasn’t even near the awards area because I had no idea I was that high up.”

Since Poole won the “Overall Military Female” category of the marathon, one might expect that “loving to run” would not be enough motivation for such a title.

But for Poole, that love to run stems from many sources, giving her the strength to make it to the finish line first in her category.

As far as aesthetics go, Poole enjoyed the crowd and the support.

“There was a great crowd at the race,” said Poole. “For a place that isn’t as busy as Boston, for instance, there was a lot of support. You could see people in lawn chairs cheering us on, adding in that small-town appeal.”

In addition to that in-the-moment motivation, running itself has become a part of Poole.

throughout high school and college, joking that she only went to college to run.

Originally, Poole enlisted in the Air Force for two years as a medical technician prior to pursuing college again for a nursing degree. It was at this time that Poole faced her greatest challenges.

“Between working 20 hours a week, participating in ROTC and going to school for a medical degree, life got pretty stress-

ful,” said Poole. “Running was one of the greatest stress relievers I had.”

Poole said her ROTC family helped her stay afloat. They trusted in her abilities as a soon-to-be officer, as a nurse and as an athlete. Without them, she would not have the determination, and trust, in herself to be the person she is today.

“When I was on the last stretch of the run, there was a hill and my legs told me

‘We can’t do this’,” said Poole. “But when you think back to all those people who said you could, you push through it.”

With her determination in hand, as well as a college degree and a commission, Poole was off to Cincinnati, Oh., to begin her Air Force career.

While in Cincinnati, Poole provided medical support for the 2011 Air Force Marathon. Afterwards, she decided she wanted to run the event the following year.

From her experience as a volunteer in the 2011 marathon, she saw how well the marathon was organized and, as a runner, saw that the course and the weather were near perfect.

“Participating as a runner really validated what I had already thought about the course,” said Poole. “It was a great marathon.”

Poole plans to run the Air Force Halfmarathon next year, as she will be participating in the Boston marathon in 2014 and must train. She also hopes to win first for the overall female category in the half-marathon.

At the end of the day, however, Poole said running is a constant measure of her strength as a person, and the Air Force has helped her keep those numbers up.

“Something about the Air Force culture has given me the strength when I didn’t have it,” said Poole. When I thought I would be at the end of my rope, my Air Force family would always support me and see me through to my goals.”

Massing of the Colors Ceremony

More than 30 color guards from throughout Virginia will pay tribute to the American flag and the servicemen and women who serve our Nation at the ninth annual Massing of the Colors Ceremony on Oct. 6 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond. This event is free and open to the public. The ceremony will be held outdoors at the E. Bruce Heilman Amphitheater.

Music will be provided by the Fort Lee 392nd Army Band. The keynote speaker will be Capt. (Ret.) James R. Mims Jr., a 101-year-old World War II veteran, who will share his recollections of the invasion of Okinawa in 1945. In 2011, Mims was recognized as America’s “Oldest Living Seabee.”

Skate, Rattle, and Roll inYorktown

Free access to National Parks

York County Parks and Recreation is sponsoring Skate, Rattle and Roll on Fridays at the Dare Elementary School Gym, 300 Dare Rd., Yorktown. Beginners and pros can enjoy skating under sparkling colored lights on more than 7,000 square feet of skating rink.

Admission is $5 per session (includes skates) or $3 with rollerblade rental. The schedule is: Session One, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., families and elementary school students (up to grade five); Session Two, 9 to 11 p.m., middle school students in grades six through eight.

A Halloween Glow Skate is scheduled for Oct. 26 (first session). This event will feature a costume parade and judging, music, games and contests.

The new military version of the “America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreation Lands Annual Pass” is available to active-duty service members. This pass grants free access at National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Army Corps sites and other public lands.

Active-duty service members and their dependents can pick up a pass at any national park or wildlife refuge that charges an entrance fee or standard amenity fees.

Members must show a current, valid military identification card to obtain their pass.

Where there are entrance fees, the pass covers the owner and accompanying passengers in a single, private, non-commercial vehicle at recreation sites that charge per vehicle. At sites where per-person entrance fees are charged, it covers the pass owner and three accompanying visitors ages 16 and older. There is no entry fee for children ages 15 and under.

October 8 to 12 is Fire Prevention Week, and the Fort Eustis Fire Department is geared up to ensure the post community can beat the heat and stay safe.

The department will host a series of events throughout the week to educate Soldiers and families about ďŹ re safety. Activities will include door-to-door visits in post housing, where personnel will perform courtesy smoke detector checks and distribute literature about ďŹ re safety.

The department will maintain a presence at the Exchange and Commissary, offering free blood pressure checks, child safety seat inspections and a ďŹ re extinguisher demonstration.

Lastly, the ďŹ re department will host an open house at the ďŹ re station on Oct. 13, where visitors can enjoy free food, a tour of the station and equipment, and a chance to mingle with Sparky the Fire Dog. Todd Hartsch, the departmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ re chief, said this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s theme is â&#x20AC;&#x153;Have Two Ways Out,â&#x20AC;? emphasizing the importance of establishing multiple escape routes in homes in the event of a ďŹ re. He shared the following statistics: â&#x2013; According to a National Fire Protection Association survey, only one-third of Americans have both developed and practiced a home ďŹ re escape plan. â&#x2013; Almost three-quarters of Americans do have an escape plan; however, less than half have actually practiced it. â&#x2013; Almost two-thirds (62 percent) of reported home ďŹ re deaths resulted from ďŹ res in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. â&#x2013; Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home ďŹ res in half. â&#x2013; In ďŹ res considered large enough to activate the smoke alarm, hardwired alarms operated 92 percent of the time, while battery powered alarms operated only 77 per-

cent of the time.

Hartsch also called attention to the dangers of unattended or careless cooking. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cooking has been the leading cause of reported home ďŹ res within the U.S. This is also true here on Fort Eustis,â&#x20AC;? he explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Unattended cooking was by far the leading cause of these ďŹ res. Two-thirds of home cooking ďŹ res began with ignition of cooking materials, including food, cooking oil, fat or grease.â&#x20AC;?

Additionally, Hartsch provided the following facts: â&#x2013; Cooking caused two of every ďŹ ve of reported home ďŹ res, roughly one of every seven home ďŹ re deaths, and two of every ďŹ ve home ďŹ re injuries, and 11 percent of direct property damage from home ďŹ res in 2010. â&#x2013; Ranges accounted for the 58 percent of home cooking ďŹ re incidents. â&#x2013; Ovens accounted for 16 percent. â&#x2013; Children under ďŹ ve face a higher risk of non-ďŹ re burns associated with cooking than being burned in a cooking ďŹ re. â&#x2013; Ninty percent of burns associated with cooking equipment resulted from contact with hot equipment or some other non-ďŹ re source. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Although most Fire Prevention Week themes almost always focus on certain factors within the home, there are other areas always mentioned during this important week,â&#x20AC;? Hartsch continued. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For example, heating equipment was the leading cause of home ďŹ res in the 1980s, and has remained second as the leading cause of home ďŹ res.â&#x20AC;?
