Hurricane preparation, tips to stay safe

It is now hurricane season and members of the JBLE community should be prepared if a hurricane were to strike in the area.

Some of the hazard risks that are associated with hurricanes are storm surges, high winds, inland flooding, tornadoes and power outages. To assist the JBLE community the following tips were provided by the Air Combat Command safety office to prepare and keep the community safe during the 2016 hurricane season, which runs through November 30.

The ACC safety office encourages members to have emergency supply and food kits on hand in case of a hurricane or disaster.

When preparing emergency supply kits, the JBLE community should take into consideration where they live and customize the contents to meet the needs of their family members. Full kits can be stored at home and smaller kits can be maintained at the workplace, vehicle and other locations.

Basic Emergency Supply Kit to include; water, food, battery powered radio, flashlight, whistle, dust mask, moist towelettes, manual can opener, local maps and a cell phone with charger.

Additional items that families should consider are; cash, matches in a waterproof container, least one week’s supply of medications, toilet paper, soap, plastic garbage bags, and personal hygiene items.

Emergency food kits should also be prepared in advance with select foods that do not require refrigeration, preparation and little or no water. These include foods like ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits or vegetables, protein or fruit bars, dry cereal or granola, peanut butter, dried fruit, nuts, crackers, canned juices, non-perishable pasteurized milk, high energy foods, vitamins and foods for infants.

Along with emergency supply and food kits, members should be aware of the Hampton Roads safety procedures.

Hurricane gates are installed along Interstate 64 to help emergency responders reverse the roadway during a major evacuation due to storm surge. The gates are located on the eastbound ramps along I-64 before the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel — Exit 273, to I-295 in Richmond — Exit 200. If the governor orders an interstate lane reversal, all lanes on I-64 will carry westbound traffic. No traffic will

be allowed to travel east on the interstate during a reversal If the gates are down, there will be only two exits for reversed traffic before I-295, Exit 234 in Williamsburg where services include gas, food, lodging and a hospital, and Exit 205 at Bottoms Bridge where services include gas and food.

Virginia’s Department of Transportation advises Hampton Roads residents to find out if they live in an area susceptible to flooding. Storm surge maps are available at www.vaemergency.gov.

The Midtown Tunnel and Jamestown-Scotland Ferry will close when an approaching tropical storm or hurricane produces winds of 39 mph, and is forecasted to intensify.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, James River Bridge, Downtown Tunnel, Coleman Bridge and the High Rise Bridge will close when an approaching tropical storm or hurricane produces 45 mph winds, and is forecasted to intensify.

Defenders, Operation Nighthawk keep Langley safe

U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 633rd Security Forces Squadron conducted a 100 percent vehicle inspection and military urinalysis test on all oncoming commuters here, July 23 and 24.

The event, titled “Operation Nighthawk,” used the Shellbank Fitness Center to inspect more than 200 vehicles and 300 individuals entering Langley Air Force Base between the hours of 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.

According to Jennifer Hall, 633rd SFS investigator, the inspections aimed to stop unauthorized or illegal contraband from entering the base.

“We want to know what is coming onto our installation and make sure no one is bringing anything illegal on base,” she said. “The operation allowed us to make sure our installation remains safe and allowed our Airmen to provide the message that we will always keep this base safe.”

The operation was part of ongoing proactive force protection measures, including increasing random vehicle inspections over the past few months. According to Capt. Antwan Floyd, 633rd SFS operations officer, these inspections provide a clear message to those entering Langley.

“We want to set the tone and let our community know about our zero tolerance policy for drugs and [illegal] weapons coming on base,” he said.

“We have random inspections all the time. While some people may be lucky enough to miss our random inspections, at one point or another, if you are bringing illegal drugs or weapons onto base or drinking and driving, we’re going to get you.”

ning and execution process, 633rd SFS partnered with various personnel from units across the installation, including 633rd Air Base Wing legal, drug demand reduction and safety offices, Office of Special Investigations and the First Sergeants council to ensure the operation was a success.

“For the entire process, it was all hands on deck,” said Floyd. “All the agencies wanted to make sure the base stays as safe as possible and this is one of the best avenues to make sure we accomplished that goal.”

According to Hall, while the operation took great effort to ensure all oncoming commuters adhered to base policy and laws, it provided a much deeper impact.

“Inspections can seem like an inconvenience, but when you look at the bigger picture, it’s an important process,” she said. “We have a ton of resources here and personnel and their families live here. We want our Airmen and their families to feel safe knowing we are doing our best to protect them and make sure no harm comes to them.”

SUPER BOWL CHAMPION JOINS US ARMY

From the three-point stance, a 310 pound offensive lineman looks across the line into the defenders’ eyes anticipating the ensuing battle that is inevitable during Super Bowl XLV in 2010.

Now 34 years-old, the retired National Football League Super Bowl Champion, Daryn Colledge is in a different arena, requiring him to ensure combat readiness for his new team, the U.S. Army.

U.S. Army Spc. Daryn Colledge, 168th Aviation Regiment UH-60 Blackhawk Helicopter repairer, rose his right hand and swore to defend the constitution, the U.S. and its citizens when he joined the Army National Guard in Idaho, March 2016.

“The National Guard was a perfect fit,” said Colledge. “I retired after nine years of professional football and I wanted something else to do. I was too young to retire [from working] and the military was always in the back of my mind.”

Growing up in Fairbanks, Alaska, Colledge learned how to fly bush planes and work on cars with his father. From the time they spent together, Colledge developed a love for aircraft maintenance that propelled him to enlist as a helicopter mechanic.

“I wanted to be hands on with other Soldiers, and the NCO side was perfect for me because I came in knowing what I wanted to do and what my Military Occupational Specialty was going to be,” said Colledge. “The 168th is a Blackhawk unit out of Idaho and they are extremely active when it comes to fire suppression and search and rescue, and that’s exactly where I wanted to be.”

Before joining the National Guard, Colledge tried his hand at an educational background in communications, for which he earned a degree from Boise State University.

“When I decided to step away from professional sports I wanted to fall back on my degree of communications, and I

did that, but soon realized that world didn’t appeal to me,” said Colledge.

“I came from a business where you’re in a fight all the time, and it’s a physical team thing. I didn’t find that in the normal day-to-day life. Then I saw that being a Soldier would keep me handson, active and keep me in that team environment that I craved and needed so much.”

While Guardsmen are traditionally called for duty for one weekend a month and two weeks a year, Colledge hopes to do much more.

“Mechanics are lucky enough to get to serve over 60 days a year and I plan on filling all of those days plus the opportunities to volunteer for other missions, like fire suppression and search and rescue,” said Colledge. “For me, it’s not just a hobby, I’ll be in there full time if they allow me.”

and leader within the Army.

“My job right now is to be the best Specialist I can,” said Colledge. “I want to fly as much as I can, grow as a Soldier, then eventually teach the younger Soldiers. I’m going to do this for as long as I can. Once my six year contract is over, I’ll re-up and do it again for as long as the Army will have me.

Red Flag’s New Kids on the Block: The F-22A Raptor

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — While only introduced a little over a decade ago, the F-22A Raptor is a critical component of both air-to-air and air-toground missions of the 21st Centrury Air Force.

Though the fifth generation F-22 and F-35 aircrafts are the youngest fighters in the Air Force family, that hasn’t stopped the F-22 from excelling as part of the United State’s arsenal.

The F-22A Raptors, assigned to the 27th Fighter Squadron, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, are participating in Red Flag 16-3 to gain the experience and integration that only a large-scale exercise can provide the young airframe’s pilots and maintenance crew.

For the Airmen of the 27th FS, the ability to train in an environment such as Red Flag, some for the first time, is an invaluable opportunity for readiness moving forward.

“Being a younger squadron, it’s always good to go on the road, it helps with squadron unity and we’re also able to integrate with other platforms,” said 1st Lt. Lyle Ratcliffe, 27th Fighter Squadron pilot. “This is critical because of the way that everyone relies on each other. The more experience we have training with each other, the better.”

With an exercise such as Red Flag, Airmen from the 27th FS are able to not only see how their airframe fits into the bigger picture, but also see it put into action.

“The 27th Fighter Squadron is composed of a lot of young Airmen right now, and for a lot of us this is our first time coming to Red Flag,” said Capt. Robert Hansen, 27th FS pilot. “The ability to plan and execute a mission, not only with other airframes, but with other branches of the military isn’t an experience that you can get on a daily basis back at Langley. Being here at Red Flag gives us the first exposure to a large force exercise that is similar to combat operations.”

The experience of participating in Red Flag and seeing how the F-22 piece fits into the larger picture of the Air Force puzzle is an aspect of the training that is not going overlooked.

“When we train back at Langley, a lot of what we do is little bits and pieces of a fight,” said Hansen. “We’re practicing and executing single ship tactics. An exercise such as Red Flag is a compilation of putting together all of those individual pieces into a big fight.”

Leading the tactical execution for the other airframes surrounding it in the fight, the capabilities that the F-22 possesses allows for the mission for flow smoothly for the entire force participating.

“The Raptor brings the fifth generation fighter into the battle,” said Hansen. “It allows an aircraft that has both stealth and integrated avionics to contribute to the battlespace. One of the unique features of the F-22

is that it is able to integrate all of the sensor data and display it all to the pilot in a 360 degree, God’s eye, view of the battle space. Which allows the pilot to employ their tactics more efficiently knowing where other aircraft on both the sides are.”

While all of these capabilities serve as larger pieces in executing the overall mission, putting them together with other airframes is a vital part of Red Flag.

“The integration piece is the most important part of coming to Red Flag, but also there is a lot of planning that goes into these missions,” said Hansen. “It’s important to see how the F-22 has to plan to make it to the fight, but also how they are going to coordinate with the other airframes.

‘Simple things like: ‘What time is everyone going to taxi?’ ‘When are they going to take off?’ ‘When are they going to the tanker?’ and ‘How long are they going to be there?’ It’s a planning problem that we don’t typically get, and that is something that is going to be important down the road in combat operations because there’s finite resources. So to see it, and get to practice here, that’s a good take away.”

Through this high-end integration with other pieces of the fight, Airmen from the 27th FS have used Red Flag 16-3 in order to gain valuable experience and skill that will be used in the future.

“Getting the Airmen the initial experience with these large force exercises, multi-branch and multiairframe planning and training is going to contribute to what the wingmen and younger guys can contribute down the road,” said Hansen. “Instead of relying heavily on the experienced pilots, the wingmen are now going to contribute and fall back on the experiences they gained here at Red Flag.”

Before and after school programs, youth sports, teen programs, arts and many clubs are available from the 633rd Force Support Squadron youth programs for all Department of Defense affiliated children at JBLE. These programs assist U.S. service members who work late or are looking to keep their children engaged in activities after school.

“Everything a child can think of, we have it or something similar to it,” said Debbie McPherson, 633rd FSS youth programs teen facility manager at Fort Eustis. “We want to keep children active, help them meet friends and engage their minds while helping parents out at the same time.”

As summer draws to a close, Joint Base Langley-Eustis families may face stressors when preparing for the upcoming school year. Through organization, proper planning, communication and engagement, families can look forward to the adjustments and minimize the stressful situations that can occur with routine changes.

Some of these routine changes include going to a new school, change of bed time, as well as changing daily activities.

Many military children deal with the struggle of adapting to a new school and making new friends as they move around from one installation to another. According to the American Psychological Association, parents are encouraged to get to know their neighbors and their neighbors’ children. By walking around the block and introducing themselves to neighbors parents can help their children meet new friends and they can meet other parents who may deal with the same stressors and have different ways to manage them.

Out lifting the competition: Army Strongwoman trains for worlds

Particles of chalk rise into the air, joining the echoing smacks of tractor tires and metal beams hitting the ground. The clanging of rubber and metal overpowers every noise, including the rock music blasting from speakers scattered throughout the gym where Strongman, CrossFit and powerlifter hopefuls practice their techniques.

In a back corner working alone, a two-time national strongman competition winner, U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Stephanie Smith, takes a breath as she searches for the composure to squat down and flip a 300 lb. tire.

Smith, who is a U.S. Army Aviation Center of intelligence senior small group leader, started competing in the competitions involving anything from lifting logs to carrying 200 lb. stones after returning from a deployment at the end of 2013. “I love the feeling I get from it,� said Smith. “When you do a competition, you’re never doing the same events. It all just depends on the gym and what materials they have available.�

Lured by the spontaneity of the five-event competition, Smith practiced more and more and eventually qualified for a national-level event. “I went to nationals back in June and I won my weight class,� explained Smith. “I’ve only been doing this for two years and I’m competing against people who have been doing this for years and years.�

For Stella Krupinski, Brute Strength Gym manager, Smith’s dedication is proven not only by the medals around her neck, but by the hours she puts into her training. “You can be great and really talented but you have to want to take it to the next level and I don’t see that in a lot of people, but I see that in her [Strongman] career,� Krupinski said. “It’s just a part of her make up that she will excel in whatever she chooses to do because she won’t settle for less.�

While new to the sport’s challenges, as a 13-year-Soldier, Smith has faced situations and gained training that

With the win at nationals, Smith qualified to compete in a world’s level event which is being held in Kentucky this October. “Making it to the Arnold [Arnold Schwarzenegger Strongman Competition], was the only thing I focused on,� said Smith. “This last year I went to nationals for United States Strongman, and if you make it to worlds and win, you get a pro card.�

The 633rd ABW Safety Office is offering the following motorcycle courses on Fort Eustis: Basic Riders Course (BRC-2) – 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Aug. 24, Motorcycle Training Range 14-A, 3300 Wilson Ave. The BRC-2 is for riders who own a motorcycle and have completed the Basic Riders Course. It is a refresher course and similar to the BRC, except for higher speeds.

Riders can practice and renew their basic riding skills.

Advanced Riders Course (ARC) – 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Aug. 16, 705 Washington Blvd., room 227. The ARC is for riders who have completed the BRC and own/operate any type of motorcycle (except 3-wheelers). The course complements a rider’s basic skills and helps with personal risk assessment. It includes a fast-paced classroom segment with several interactive activities to improve perception and hazard awareness. Range exercises enhance both basic and crash avoidance skills.

Motorcycle rider courses are offered to active-duty Service members on a first-priority basis. Family members, retirees, Department of Defense civilians and contractors will be scheduled on a standby basis only. The courses are provided at no cost to qualified participants.

To attend these courses, you must have previously completed the BRC, be a properly licensed rider, own your motorcycle, possess a valid state inspection, registration, insurance and wear the proper personal protection equipment.

JBLE does not have a contract to conduct BRCs. Airmen and Soldiers can take the BRC at Fort Lee or through the Navy (free of charge).
