Base leadership addresses community concerns at community events council

Langley Air Force Base’s second community events council took place April 2, at Bethel Manor Elementary School, in Hampton, Virginia.

The Langley Airman and Family Readiness center adopted the council format from its joint partners at Fort Eustis as it has been a successful means for Post members to get accurate information on new infrastructure, programs and services. The Langley community will have the opportunity to attend this meeting quarterly.

“The Langley community should attend the Community Events Council because it is a valuable communication link to increase awareness levels of community residents concerning initiatives, programs, upcoming activities, and facilities for Langley,” said Dawn R. Teagle, AFRC chief.

At the council, community members not only have the opportunity to learn of base happenings, but share concerns and ideas with base leadership and helping agencies.

Heritage Spotlight Following declarations of secession by seven Southern states, South Carolina demanded the U.S. Army abandon its facilities in Charleston Harbor. On Dec. 26, 1860, U.S. Army Major Robert Anderson covertly moved his small command from the indefensible Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island to Fort Sumter, a substantial fortress controlling the entrance of Charleston Harbor. An attempt by U.S. President James Buchanan to reinforce and resupply Anderson, using the unarmed merchant ship Star of the West, failed when it was fired upon by shore batteries on Jan. 9, 1861. South Carolina authorities then seized all Federal property in the Charleston area -- except Fort Sumter.

Throughout the meeting, community members learned of various resources provided to base members and their families as well as new initiatives, upcoming recreational activities, construction projects and road and gate closures.

“There was a lot of information I

didn’t realize they were going to present tonight,” said Cassandra Snyder, military spouse and board member for Bethel Manor neighborhood watch.

“It’s a great avenue to get your questions answered.”

With a goal of better serving the community by keeping people informed and tending to concerns, the council hopes to serve as an open forum where information is both disseminated and gathered.

“It is important for the Langley community to have a direct line of communication with base program managers and leadership because it gives the community an opportunity to exchange ideas and also learn about what services our awesome base currently has to offer,” said Teagle. “This can only make JBLE Langley an even better place to live, work and play.”

April 12, 1861: Attack on Fort Sumter During the early months of 1861, the situation around Fort Sumter increasingly began to resemble a siege. In March, Brig. Gen. P. G. T. Beauregard, the first general officer of the newly formed Confederate States of America, was placed in command of Confederate forces in Charleston. Beauregard energetically directed the strengthening of batteries around Charleston harbor aimed at Fort Sumter. Conditions in the fort grew dire as the Union soldiers rushed to complete the installation of additional guns. Anderson was short of men, food and supplies.

The resupply of Fort Sumter became the first crisis of the administration of President Abraham Lincoln. He noti-

fied the Governor of South Carolina, Francis W. Pickens, that he was sending supply ships, which resulted in an ultimatum from the Confederate government: evacuate Fort Sumter immediately. Anderson refused to surrender.

At 4:30 a.m. on April 12, the Confederates bombarded the fort from artillery batteries surrounding the harbor.

Although the Union garrison returned fire, they were significantly outgunned and, after 34 hours, Anderson agreed to evacuate.

There was no loss of life on either side as a direct result of this engagement, although a gun explosion during the surrender ceremonies on April 14 caused one Union death.

April marks annual Child Abuse Prevention Month

Each April, family advocacy programs, health centers and parents across the United States come together to raise awareness to support Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The Joint Base Langley-Eustis Family Advocacy Program will host events throughout April, to show support for military children and to provide parents with lessons and tips on knowing the signs of child abuse and how to prevent it.

“This month is really important to help parents understand the importance of prevention when it comes to child abuse,” said A.J. Brandt, Family Advocacy Program outreach manager. “Each member of

our community can play an important role in the life of a child by reporting any suspected child abuse or neglect to keep our children safe.”

Children at Child Development Centers on both installations will plant blue and silver pinwheels, the national symbol for child abuse prevention, in honor of the observance month. Also, personnel will set up tables at the McDonald Army Health Center, Langley Hospital and the installation Exchanges with information on parenting under stress, recognizing signs of abuse and maltreatment, and parenting classes provided by the FAP. “We provide parenting classes using specialized curriculums for

each age group so parents can alter their discipline style as their children get older,” said Brandt. “The key is teaching parents different methods of discipline other than spanking and providing services parents need when they are dealing with more stress than usual.”

According to the Department of Human Services, military families are more likely to face unique risk factors such as intermittent single parenting due to military operations, frequent moves and separation from extended families.

“Those factors can add stress and make parents more vulnerable to losing their temper when disciplining children,” said Brandt. “We provide these important services as an added support system for the families and we focus on prevention so families can avoid negative situations.”

A U.S. Army first sergeant assigned to the 128th Aviation Brigade received the Soldier’s Medal April 3, during a ceremony at Fort Eustis, in honor of actions performed while deployed to Afghanistan in 2014.

First Sgt. William Howard, Hotel Company, 1st Battalion, 222nd Aviation Regiment first sergeant, earned the prestigious decoration for his participation in a rescue effort July 3, 2014, in the aftermath of a rocket attack on the Joint Air Facility at Kabul International Airport in Afghanistan. Howard and fellow Soldiers rushed to evacuate Afghan soldiers trapped inside a prayer room set ablaze by the at-

tack, braving noxious smoke, flames and fumes on several trips into the burning hangar to successfully retrieve all personnel.

Army Regulation 600-8-22 outlines the criteria for awarding the Soldier’s Medal as performance that “has involved personal hazard or danger and the voluntary risk of life under conditions not involving conflict with an armed enemy.” It is the highest honor a Soldier can receive for an act of valor in a non-combat situation.

During a routine patrol of the airport, Howard heard the sound of rockets overhead, one of which flew over the airport, landing within the JAF occupied by MI17 helicopters and PC-12 fixed-wing airplanes for the Afghan Special Mission

Wing and striking an MI-17 fuel tank, resulting in an explosion.

Fearing the safety of those inside the hangar, Howard quickly entered a vehicle and sped toward the attack site.

Upon arrival, he confirmed the second floor of the building was clear, but heard shouting from fellow Soldiers, indicating personnel trapped on the first floor.

As Chief Warrant Officer 4 Kevin Huggins and Chief Warrant Officer 3 Robert Moran called on Howard for help, he heard shouting and banging from a nearby door, behind which was a prayer room for Afghan soldiers.

“The doors were locked from [both sides] and warped from the heat,” said Howard. “We started using anything and everything we could to pry open those doors before someone brought us a heavy duty pry-bar.”

Once the doors were opened, two soldiers emerged under their own power followed by a cloud of smoke and heat,

but three others remained inside, incapacitated.

“We just went in there without thinking,” said Howard. “We needed to get them all out no matter what.”

As the small recovery team retrieved the remaining Soldiers inside the room, one of the injured began repeating “one more, one more, one more.” Despite being unable to immediately confirm if any personnel remained in the burning hangar, the Soldiers returned inside to look for survivors.

“Once we realized there was no one else in the room, the smoke started to get to us and we started to get turned around in the maze-like hangar,” said Howard. “I was pretty much crawling on the ground at this point, looking, reaching, hoping for a way out. I looked up and saw a beam of light, and shouted to my partners that I am going to go toward the light.”

SOLDIER’S MEDAL FROM PAGE 4 The light was from the open hangar doors in which the team needed to reach to escape. While attempting to reach the doors through the mire of smoke and flames, a nearby fuel tank exploded, nearly injuring the rescuers. Despite the chaos of the engulfed hangar, the Soldiers managed to successfully escape, only to learn the building had not been entirely cleared.

Even after their harrowing rescue efforts, the four of them returned without hesitation into the building to search for additional persons, fortunately finding the building empty and everyone safely accounted for.

Only when the smoke had cleared and everyone had been examined by medical personnel did the gravity of the situation sink in for Howard.

“I could hardly even remember what happened; it was all sort of a blur,” he said.

“Once everything settled I was on a sort of high, one that is difficult to explain. I didn’t go into that building thinking about myself; I went in there thinking I needed to save these people.”

Howard said he believed it was his responsibility as a senior noncommissioned

officer to save the lives of those trapped inside the building.

“Those stuck inside were my responsibility and as the senior enlisted, [I had] to do what the commander had charged me with: to take care of everyone, to include [those on] the Afghan side,” said Howard.

Col. Don Fallin, Special Mission Wing commander, commended Howard’s sense of responsibility and leadership in his remarks during the medal presentation ceremony.

“This is an important day for this great noncommissioned officer,” said Fallin.

“While deployed together, I could always rely on him, I knew he was there. It was an honor to serve alongside him, [as] he did so many great things for our unit.”

Howard said he was humbled by the honor, and upheld his actions as necessary in the line of duty.

“I didn’t do any of that for a medal; it wasn’t about that for me,” he said. “The memory of those guys, before and after, is more of reward then anything I can receive.

I did it for them, not for anybody else.”

The then U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Katherine Shaw’s flight instructor sat across from Shaw with an expressionless face. The instructor took in a deep breath as if the air contained the right way to say the words he was about to utter, but there were none.

“They said I had a great attitude and work ethic, and would still make a great officer, just not as a pilot,” said now 2nd Lt. Shaw when recalling the meeting where she discovered she failed out of the initial flight screening program in Pueblo, Colorado.

Failure was an unfamiliar territory for the 22-year-old from Cincinnati who practiced, studied and trained until meeting perfection, but with flying there just wasn’t enough time to practice. During training, she only had about three flights in an actual aircraft. She studied and memorized her books from cover to cover, but the text lacked the hands-on feel of the throttle and landing gear she needed.

“It was frustrating,” said Shaw.

“I hate struggling and not being able to get something right, but this was a time for me to look inside and say, ‘yeah I really want to do this, but there’s nothing I would have done differently, and yes, I failed, but what’s next?’”

Still in Colorado awaiting her assignment to a new career field, Shaw took to the internet to find a new challenge to conquer that would test her limits just as flying had done. An avid swimmer, soccer player and runner, she looked to fitness and began searching for events that would fill the void failure left behind.

“There was this sensation in me that I wanted more, that I expected myself to be able to give me more,” she said. “I wanted to endure more pain, push myself harder, become fitter and become stronger.”

While searching, Shaw read “Half IronMan Austin Texas” across her LCD screen. The 70.3 mile race comprised of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13.1mile run was just a few weeks away and a mere stopping point on her way to her next assignment at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi.

After preparing for three weeks, Shaw said she thought she had a good handle on competing in the race as she was already a strong runner and swimmer, and recently took up biking.

When she arrived at the course, carting her bottom-of-the-line triathlon bike, she was in awe of the athletes dressed in expensive high-performance athletic gear.

“I’d never seen anything like it before. Everyone looked like a professional athlete,” said Shaw.

“I felt really intimidated, but everyone was so nice and supportive even before the race.”

After soaking in the activity around her, Shaw trudged into the open water with hundreds of others in her heat awaiting the clamor of the starting gun.

A powerful blast sounded from the gun and Shaw along with her competitor’s flailed their limbs about grasping for the pull through the tide, hitting the water and creating turbulence for what was usually a smooth activity in the pool by herself.

IRON AIRMAN FROM PAGE 8 “I was thinking, ‘this is terrible,’ which is what I wanted,” said Shaw. “If I was swimming in a pool, I would have quit, but I didn’t have that option. I was struggling and told myself ‘I got to keep moving.”

Once Shaw finally finished the swim portion, she sprang on her bike only to get passed by a 70-year-old woman, but she still peddled through the entire 56 miles and made her way to the run.

“I start the run, and everyone said I had a good pace and looked great,” she said.

“It wasn’t fast by any means, but I felt strong.”

Three laps through Austin with four hills to go, she kept repeating, “keep running.” As her muscles screamed from exhaustion, Shaw said she could hear the cheers of encouragement through the chaos.

“There were people cheering the whole time,” said Shaw. “And, then came the best part: running past the finish line hearing you’re a half IronMan.” As she heard those words, her previous failure seemed like a distant memory.

“Although I went into the race looking to get my butt kicked, I learned you don’t have to beat yourself up over not doing well,” said Shaw. “You can find a different challenge or goal and work toward it.”

Inspired by the experience, Shaw’s next goal was to take more time to train and compete in a full IronMan -- a 140.6 mile triathlon.

“I wanted to see if I could go the dis-

tance, and if I could, could I be fast and strong at it,” said Shaw.

She set her sights on IronMan Louisville and gave herself approximately a year to train. A solo sport competitor, Shaw had only the windy sound of her wheels, the engulfing hug of water and repetitive thud of her feet hitting the pavement to accompany her thoughts for miles every day.

“The process of training has really allowed me to take a step back and look at my life and how I can push myself, not only physically but mentally and emotionally,” said Shaw. “It’s allowed me to test my limits, push myself down and pull myself back up. It’s that constant reminder that yeah you might stink at something, but if you work hard you can change your outcome.”

Shaw completed the full IronMan in August 2014 and beat all of her previous paces, but ever the challenger to herself, she has her sights set on surpassing her completion time and learning more about her strengths and weaknesses at IronMan Texas, May 16.

“Through triathlons I have gained more perspective on myself and how I am able to overcome obstacles,” said Shaw. “I learned that whatever you put your heart and mind to you can achieve. At first, that was hard for me to understand because I felt like I did that with flying. There are days that I’m not going to win, but I can’t let one thing in life keep me from being happy and triathlons allowed me to do that--they helped me move forward.”

The group underwent a 21-day controlled monitoring period in compliance with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Instruction 4220.01, which requires all Department of Defense personnel to remain in controlled monitoring areas upon returning from a deployment to, transitioning through, or having been stationed in the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak area in West Africa as declared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or exposed to EVD asymptomatic or symptomatic persons within the continental United States.

As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Joint Base LangleyEustis Sexual Assault Theater Group performed a skit titled “An Airman Assault: Know Your Part” for U.S. Service members and civilians at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, April 7, 2015.

The group used the skit to emphasize the importance of wingmanship in a series of simulated events that could lead to sexual assault. The skit encouraged the audience’s participation to recognize the signs of a possible offender as the scenarios were acted out.

“The performance laid out the entire scenario leading up to a sexual assault and the aftermath. We show a scenario where bystanders could’ve intervened to prevent a potential assault by being a good wingman,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. William Hayes, 633rd Communications Squadron superintendent of operations and a Langley Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program victim advocate. “We also showed how the offender targets and attempts

to take advantage of a potential victim and how the offender justifies their behavior.”

Hayes and the other group members are victim advocates who use Sexual Assault Awareness Month skits as an alternative for briefings. Hayes added some briefings are mandatory, but SATG’s performances are designed to provide a different approach to the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program.

“In a briefing you read and hear about things you should and should not do and what you should watch out for,” said Hayes. “In our skit, we actually act everything out where you can see the behavior, call it out and question it. We want the audience to recognize certain behaviors and know when to intervene and stop it. Protecting and looking out for each other is a 24/7 job that takes place anywhere at any time.”

the characters did wrong by discussing in character,” said Hayes. “The cast answers the questions as the victim, the bartender, the offender and the bystander.”

Hayes hopes to give the audience a glimpse into an offender’s way of thinking. After watching one of SATG’s performances, Hayes said an Airman should be able to identify what situations lead up to an assault and have a good idea of how to prevent it.

“Individuals can help mitigate this behavior by being aware of their surrounding and always being in the correct mental state,” said Hayes. “Having a good wingman you can trust helps.”

Airman keeps communication channels open while deployed

Imagine, for a moment, that you have no Wi-Fi, no hardline telephone or Internet access, no way to electronically communicate with anyone. How long would it take before you begin to panic?

Airmen of the Expeditionary Communication Squadron client service technician shop are instrumental in keeping these communication channels open to ensure mission accomplishment.

“Our mission here is to provide communication support all around base,” said Tech. Sgt. Glenn, client service technician noncommissioned officer in charge. “If there are wires connected to it, we are responsible for it.”

The CST shop is broken down into telephone, operations and local sections.

“The telephone section supports all the telephones on base that are not voice over internet protocol telephones,” said Glenn. “The operations section provides all the computer support for the flightline area, and the local section provides computer support for the main base.”

Client service technicians in the tele-

phone section maintain over 2,000 telephones on base.

“I work on phones and phone lines, repairing the connections from the switch to the customer,” said Senior Airman Christopher, client service technician. “I make sure customers can communicate via telephone lines amongst each other.”

The most well-known role of the CST shop is fixing computer issues ranging from locked accounts to software issues.

“I ensure computers work, are usable, not slow and are connected to the network,” said Airman 1st Class Maury, client service technician. “I make sure the user can log onto their computer to complete their daily tasks.”

Computers are needed to track everything from fuel and mileage to missions, added Glenn.

“Without computers aircraft don’t take off,” said Glenn. “So, no comm, no bombs.”

These Airmen have kept the communication channels on air since their arrival.

COMMUNICATION FROM PAGE 14 “During our rotation we have worked approximately 2,200 tickets,” said Glenn, currently deployed from Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. “We are also currently assisting up to 150 customers a day with new account requests in addition to handling computer and telephone issues.”

The CST shop’s support has also extended to include the Royal Australian Air Force.

“We were able to integrate the Australian personnel under our network,” added Glenn. “We provided both telephone and computer support. We were able to add them on to our network and get them going.”

Not having the Airmen of CST here to help ensure communication flows smoothly can put a hindrance on the mission.

“Communicating would become more difficult,” said Christopher, currently deployed from Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. “You would not

be able to just sit at your desk and call someone or send an e-mail. It would come down to having to do face-to-face communication, which takes you away from completing your own daily tasks.”

The Airmen of CST continue to remain positive with a can-do attitude while doing the best they can to keeping communication flowing.

“Every member of my team has been the driving force behind what has made this a great deployment and a great shop to work in,” said Glenn. “We are happy to be here to provide this essential service to the warfighter to take care of the mission. We are considered by many the eyes of the Communication Squadron.

We are the first ones and often times the only ones people see.”

Topping the list of things the U.S. Army wants in its $127 billion Fiscal Year 2016 budget request are 12 critical programs that support mission command, joint combined arms maneuver and broad joint mission support.

Experts within the Army’s G-8, responsible for matching programs with limited resources, were quick to point out the list of items are in no prioritized order, but that they are all high-dollar programs critical to the Army mission.

“It shows Congress where we are spending taxpayer dollars. These programs also provide critical capability to Soldiers,” said. Col. Brian Halloran, Army G-8 force development division chief for plans, strategy and policy. “How we chose these 12 specific programs from the

more than 200 we have going on is three-fold: these are programs with high-dollar investment by the nation; and they also provide very increased capability to the Soldier and they nest within our broad priorities within the strategy as well.”

Supporting mission command initiatives is the Nett Warrior system, which is an Android-based cell phone that has been modified to work with Army communications systems to bring critical operational information to the dismounted leaders of platoons, squads, and teams.

The 2016 budget request includes funding to allow the system to be fielded at the tactical level in three brigade combat teams, said Col. Richard Price, Army G-8 force development division chief for mission command.

ARMY TOP 12 FROM PAGE 16 “That will go down to the team-leader level, to allow them to use commercial, off-the-shelf equipment to display maps and position data,” Price said. “It’s an Android phone, where we take off the proprietary software, and we put Army software on it, so we can display Army applications, which give you maps and location data.”

Price said for Nett Warrior, the Army has reached a level of robustness and readiness with the hardware to field the system, but added that the software component will continue to improve for a long time.

“As we continue to develop apps, it will give you the capability to display information from the Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System, unit data, war plans, operations orders and other things on the screen,” he said.

Price said the Nett Warrior supports the Army, and is critical in that it provides the dismounted leader - the Army’s most critical “resource” - with the information he or she needs to do their job.

“It allows you to share information down to the lowest tactical level, with the team leaders on the ground, and allows you to understand from a location standpoint where those team leaders are located,” Price said.

Price also said the Army wants to field to three brigade combat teams, or BCTs, the communications equipment included in the family of networked tactical radios, including the rifleman radio at the squad and platoon level, the “handheld, manpack and small-form fit” radios at the platoon and company level, and the maneuver radio that connects everything to Army command elements.

Also making the list in support of mission command capabilities is the Warfighter Information Network - Tactical system, the Joint Battle Command - Platform, and the Distributed Common

Ground System - Army.

The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, or JLTV, which is a joint program between the Army and the Marine Corps, makes the list as a contributor to the joint combined arms maneuver mission. Right now there are three commercial contractors competing to win the JLTV program contract. Those contractors include Lockheed Martin, Oshkosh Defense and AM General.

Col. Michel M. Russell Sr., Army G-8 FD division chief for focused logistics, said the Army expects to exit the current engineering and manufacturing development stage of the JLTV competition, and down-select from three contractors to one as part of an acquisition decision in the fourth quarter of FY 2015. That one winning contractor will be awarded the low-rate initial production contract for the JLTV. The Army plans to eventually purchase 49,099 JLTVs, while the Marine Corps plans to eventually buy 5,500 of the vehicles. For the Army, initial operating capability on the JLTV is expected in the fourth quarter FY 2018.

Russell said in light tactical vehicles, the Army looks for three primary components: payload, performance and protection. Those three characteristics together, he said, are referred to as “the iron triangle.”

“What JLTV does is it meets the capability gap that allows us to bring all three of those back into balance,” Russell said.

“We gain all that back, and it’s deployable in all the different environments.”

Also included in the 12 critical programs for the Army is the Maneuver Support Vessel - Light, or MSV-L, a watercraft that is intended to replace the existing Vietnam-era Landing Craft Mechanized 8. The MSV-L supports the Joint Combined Arms Maneuver and the Army Operating Concept, Russell said.

“It’s a new start program, and is critical because it is the lynchpin to the Army’s

watercraft strategy,” Russell said.

He said the MSV-L will allow commanders to maneuver supplies, sustainment and systems in and around their waterscape. The watercraft can carry a tank, a JLTV, a Stryker, troops, or supplies.

“This is a brand new program and will have to proceed through the acquisition milestone agenda, in terms of requests for production and getting bids back from original equipment manufacturers, doing testing, RDT&E [research, development, test and evaluation], procurement, the whole nine yards,” Russell said.

Despite this meticulous process the Army must go through to provide Soldiers the best equipment available, Russell said he expects the MSV-L can be fielded in as little as six years. The system is not a “developmental” program, in that it will not be designed from scratch. Instead, he said, it is very likely the MSV-L will be based on an existing “commercial off-the-shelf” watercraft that will be “ruggedized and made to fit the Army’s mission profile.”

“With the current emphasis on this particular vessel, and how it anchors to the Army Operating Concept for watercraft operations for combatant commanders, there is a lot of emphasis on getting this program moving,” Russell said.

Also supporting joint combined arms maneuver within the 12 critical programs is the AH-64 Apache helicopter.

The Army resourcing for the Apache is mostly to convert existing D-model aircraft into E model aircraft.

James St. Amour, a civilian working in Army G-8 force development as a staff synchronization officer for AH-64, said the move is, “a huge underpinning of our modernization effort.” The modernization effort is possible due to the cost savings and avoidance that the Army’s Aviation Restructure Initiative provides.

Conversion from D to E models involves “depopulating the airframe and rebuilding the helicopter from the ground up. The aircraft gets a totally new fuselage, a new rotor system and other component parts. It’s like a new aircraft coming off the line,” St. Amour said. “The E model resets the airframe to zero hours.”

Right now there are fewer than 100 E model Apaches in the Army. But the goal is to have all 690 Apaches in the Army modernized to E models.

With the Apache E model, AH-64E, the Army will pair the combat helicopter with the Shadow unmanned aerial vehicle to fill the armed reconnaissance role filled by the OH-58 Kiowa helicopter. The Kiowa is being divested from the Army, and St. Amour said all will be gone from the fleet by 2018.

There are 104 Shadow “systems” in the Army, each of which includes four aircraft, two ground control stations, antennas and data terminals. There are 416 Shadow aircraft in the Army, and as part of paring those aircraft with the Apache E model, the Army plans to upgrade those Shadows to V2 Shadow models. Right now, none have made the transition, but they will eventually have longer wings, better endurance, a different engine, and a different datalink, St. Amour said.

As part of the Aviation Restructure Initiative, the Army plans to have all combat aviation brigades converted to the new structure by 2019. Once fully fielded, the AH-64E provides Army Aviation with a much more lethal and capable force.

Rounding out the Army’s Critical Programs that support joint combined arms maneuver are the Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle, the Patriot Missile, the Paladin Integrated Management program, and the UH-60 Black Hawk. Both the Black Hawk and the MSV-L also add to the Army’s broad joint mission support capabilities.

Soldiers help community with Habitat for Humanity

Eight U.S. Army Soldiers from the 99th Transportation Detachment Movement Control Team, 53rd Movement Control Battalion, 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) worked on two houses in support of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg Habitat for Heroes program in Hampton, April 4.

While at the two houses, the Soldiers spent their time disposing of unneeded garbage and unused wood left over from previous construction and installing hinges.

“I enjoyed helping out,” said Sgt. Kenneth Black, 99th MCT movement noncommissioned officer in charge. “It was better time spent then possibly sitting in front of a television on a Saturday morning.”

Habitat for Humanity partners with families, local government, businesses, faith groups, schools, associations and individual volunteers and donors to build and renovate affordable homes for lowincome families.

“Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg brings people together to build homes, communities and hope,” said LaToya Tyler, Habitat PGW deputy director. “Soldiers have been working with Habitat since the affiliate was founded 30 years ago and they have worked hard to keep a strong relationship with all branches of the military.”

The Soldiers took part in Habitat for Heroes, which provides current and former Service members the opportunity to engage with their community, by working together to build and work on houses.

“After spending an already 13 years in the Army, I couldn’t imagine how it would feel to need assistance,” said Black. “That’s why I didn’t mind spending my Saturday helping those who need it.”

The Habitat PGW has volunteers from all services from around the local area, and always encourages volunteers to keep the military bond.

Soldiers who volunteer with the program help in a variety of capacities, from home construction and exterior home repairs to helping at the Habitat ReStore, the organization’s home improvement and donation center, which uses profits to build homes in the community.

The 99th MCT Soldiers plan to continue working with the program, but will also find other community based volunteer opportunities, said U.S. Army Capt.

Restrictions: • Only 5 ads per week, per household • Renewals, corrections and cancellations cannot be taken by phone and must be resubmitted • Illegible, too long or otherwise do not conform to instructions will not be published and must be resubmitted for the next issue • Automotive ads must begin with make, model and year • Real estate ads must begin with name of city, neighborhood and must be your primary residence.

• Ads will not be accepted via official mailing channels such as guard mail or postage and fees paid indicia.

• Free ads cannot be of a commercial nature (i. e., business opportunities, help wanted, etc) and must be personal property of the eligible member. Should not represent a sustained income or business or listed through agents or representatives.

• When advertising a home for rent or home for sale, the home must be THE PRIMARY RESIDENCE. (All rental properties are considered paid ads.)
