BEING A LEADER: HONOR GUARDSMAN WINS AWARD

At first, honor guard wasn’t even a thought for, then, U.S Air Force Airman 1st Class Quinton Gittens. it was only brought up briefly in conversation with a Chief Master Sergeant however, as the fates would have it, Gittens was tasked to start the honor guard program the very next week.

“When I started honor guard, I wasn’t the best,” explained, now, Staff Sgt. Quinton Gittens, 633rd Force Support Squadron readiness NCO in charge. “I was struggling pretty badly, but as time

went on I ended up liking it, and I ended up doing really well at it.”

For Gittens, honor guard became more than just doing details and participating in ceremonies, it became an opportunity to lead and help Airmen become better.

After seven years of serving as an honor guardsman, Gitten was recognized for that leadership and won the 9th Air Force Program Manager of the Year in 2016. He won the award while leading Airmen as the 633rd Force Support Squadron honor guard manager.

The Program Manager of the Year goes through multiple levels to determine the winner. It starts off at the base level, where individuals put in a package to be selected for the award. The package then goes up to the numbered Air Force level. This is where individuals are evaluated and compared to candidates from other bases. Next, the best candidates are chosen from their respective major command level. Lastly, those who were submitted for the 12 outstanding Airmen of the Year level are chosen.

While Gittens was very excited and accepted his award with great gratitude, he didn’t want to take all the credit.

According to Gittens, the Airmen he led were his motivation. If it wasn’t for them, he doesn’t think he would have been a candidate for the award.

“Bettering someone, that is my motivation,” said Gittens. “If I could reach out to you and help change your life… and I can see the positive results from that, that’s my motivation.”

Gittens truly cares about the Airmen he mentored, to the point where he turned down a position at the Air Force Honor Guard, since he believed he could better impact Airmen at the base level.

“The definition of a true leader is having people who are willing to follow you,” said Gittens. “That’s what I lead by.”

AER: Soldiers caring for Soldiers

The Fort Eustis, Virginia, Army Emergency Relief assistance program launched their 2017 campaign, ‘75 Years: A Legacy Year of Caring,’ March, 2, 2017. The campaign events will run through May 30, 2017.

For 75 years, the program objectives have stayed the same: Raise awareness of the benefits that the AER assistance program has to offer, and aid Soldiers in helping fellow Soldiers.

This year, U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Anthony Funkhouser, Center for Initial Military Training commander, gave the opening remarks at the campaign kick-off and stated his fundraising goal for the installation is to put $115,000 toward helping Soldiers, retirees and their family members.

“This is the military taking care of its military members,” said Funkhouser. “You can’t ask for a better program that gives right back to military members and helps us take care of our own.”

As of February 2017, $57,000 has been distributed to approximately 43 Ft. Eustis Soldiers, retirees and their families.

“This program exists because we, as Soldiers, continue to donate to take care of other Soldiers in need for the last 75 years,” said Hood. “You never know when you or your battle buddy will need a helping hand. Just know your donation, big or small, will go a long way.”

Army Emergency Relief offers grants, survivor assistance and scholarships to qualified individuals as well as interest-free loans up to $1,000 for terms between 12 and 24 months.

transportation, emergency leave, funeral expenses, medical expenses or personal needs when pay is delayed or stolen.

However, AER does not aid in paying for legal expenses, credit card bills, nonessentials or to finance ordinary leave.

“When you donate, you may never know the lives that you have touched,” said Hood. “But knowing that you can help affect lives for good throughout the community makes donating worth it.”

HELPING NEW OFFICERS INCREASE FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT SKILLS

After U. S. Air Force 2nd Lieutenants complete Officer Training School and arrive at their first duty station, they may need assistance in managing their personal finances in addition to educating the Airmen that they will supervise on finances.

Designed to help first duty station officers to increase their financial readiness skills, the Joint Base LangleyEustis, Virginia, Airmen and Family Readiness Center’s mandatory finance briefing is provided within 90 days of arrival to the installation.

According to Nina Lee, AFRC community readiness specialist, the AFRC’s relocation team initiates contact with first duty station officers by finding their information from the Right Start Newcomer’s Orientation sign-in rosters.

“Officers have to be able to lead by example and this is why the Air Force has made this financial readiness training mandatory,” said Lee. “For us, financial readiness is doing everything that we can to make sure Airmen have every opportunity for financial success.”

Some of the discussion topics during the training include, pay and entitlements, allotments, online banking, digital footprints, identity theft, car buying, savings plans, building credit, investment tools and family financial readiness.

“Even though the finance briefing is mandatory, we don’t tell them what to do,” said Lee. “Our focus is to arm them with a wealth of information to make the best informed decision about their financial endeavors.

They get information and resources that they can use and share with their troops.”

According to www.ftc.gov, financial readiness website Military.Consumer.gov was created for mobile devices to help service members and their families make sound financial management decisions during frequent relocations and deployments. The Federal Trade Commission has also teamed up with the Department of Defense, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Military Saves to assist military consumers with managing money while on the move.

From line cooks to the total demolition of a building, the 633rd Contracting Squadron at Joint Base LangleyEustis, Virginia, helps guarantee that the installation has the end strength to keep running.

Before the U.S. Air Force minimized its personnel by 41 percent in 1990, Airmen executed the majority of base operations services, such as dining facilities, grounds maintenance and custodial services. As the size of the force has become smaller, members have had to continue the same missions, while their responsibilities increase in virtually every mission area. The 633rd Contracting Squadron at JBLE has offered a hand to fill those manpower gaps.

The 633rd CONS has helped shift responsibilities and now have a portfolio of service contracts valued at $449 million dollars and a contractor work force estimated to be close to 1,000 personnel.

“The contracting squadron is responsible for installation support acquisition services,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Loyd Childs, 633rd CONS commander. “Every squadron on JBLE has a mission and sometimes there are areas from an installation support perspective they need help with. When those requirements present themselves, the supported squadron becomes a member of the acquisition team and 633rd CONS is here as a business advisor to help them source out those requirements from a commercial sector.”

The 633rd CONS is key to acquiring services for any organization on JBLE, but the process of hiring contracted help starts within the unit.

First, a development of a performance work statement is created by the unit and if the request can’t be satisfied by units around the installation, such as the 633rd Civil Engi-

neer Squadron, then the request if forwarded to the 633rd CONS. Once the unit provides a certification of the necessary funds, the 633rd CONS can begin their process.

Through customer engagement, the 633rd CONS ensures customers are abiding by the appropriate laws to contract out the service and once the contract is created, they are also responsible for paying the contractors and guaranteeing that they are properly following the guidelines of their contract.

“People believe civil engineering fixes everything, but unfortunately with the operations tempo, all of that stuff would go away,” said Brenton McCoy, 633rd CONS infrastructure flight chief. “A lot of the nice-to-have stuff would not exist and the base would feel the affect in about two weeks after losing the contracting squadron. Without the contractors, the strain that we have would get worse.”

According to McCoy, without contracting, the Air Force would have to find ways to perform everyday operations internally with minimal personnel. For instance, purchasing of computers, cable television, snow removal, heating, ventilation and air conditioning would take longer to acquire or fix on base because the services are supplied by the commercial market on JBLE through a contract.

“Every Airmen on this base at some point in time will benefit from something that contracting executes,” said Childs. “Contracting is here to help make your mission execute better at the end of the day. We don’t make the mission, we make the mission better.”

As the Air Force works to increase the number of quality Airmen throughout the installation, JBLE can continue to rely on the 633rd CONS to bring in contracting services where they are needed to ensure mission success.

Before the U.S. Air Force minimized its personnel by 41 percent in 1990, Airmen executed the majority of base operations services, such as dining facilities, grounds maintenance and custodial services. As the size of the force has become smaller, members have had to continue the same missions, while their responsibilities increase in virtually every mission area. The 633rd Contracting Squadron at JBLE has offered a hand to fill those manpower gaps.

The 633rd CONS has helped shift responsibilities and now have a portfolio of service contracts valued at $449 million dollars and a contractor work force estimated to be close to 1,000 personnel.

“The contracting squadron is responsible for installation support acquisition services,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Loyd Childs, 633rd CONS commander. “Every squadron on JBLE has a mission and sometimes there are areas from an installation support perspective they need help with. When those requirements present themselves, the supported squadron becomes a member of the acquisition team and 633rd CONS is here as a business advisor to help them source out those requirements from a commercial sector.”

The 633rd CONS is key to acquiring services for any organization on JBLE, but the process of hiring contracted help starts within the unit.

First, a development of a performance work statement is created by the unit and if the request can’t be satisfied by units around the installation, such as the 633rd Civil Engi-

neer Squadron, then the request if forwarded to the 633rd CONS. Once the unit provides a certification of the necessary funds, the 633rd CONS can begin their process.

Through customer engagement, the 633rd CONS ensures customers are abiding by the appropriate laws to contract out the service and once the contract is created, they are also responsible for paying the contractors and guaranteeing that they are properly following the guidelines of their contract.

“People believe civil engineering fixes everything, but unfortunately with the operations tempo, all of that stuff would go away,” said Brenton McCoy, 633rd CONS infrastructure flight chief. “A lot of the nice-to-have stuff would not exist and the base would feel the affect in about two weeks after losing the contracting squadron. Without the contractors, the strain that we have would get worse.”

According to McCoy, without contracting, the Air Force would have to find ways to perform everyday operations internally with minimal personnel. For instance, purchasing of computers, cable television, snow removal, heating, ventilation and air conditioning would take longer to acquire or fix on base because the services are supplied by the commercial market on JBLE through a contract.

“Every Airmen on this base at some point in time will benefit from something that contracting executes,” said Childs. “Contracting is here to help make your mission execute better at the end of the day. We don’t make the mission, we make the mission better.”

As the Air Force works to increase the number of quality Airmen throughout the installation, JBLE can continue to rely on the 633rd CONS to bring in contracting services where they are needed to ensure mission success.

NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH: PUTS BEST FORK FORWARD

National Nutrition Month is an educational campaign organized every March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which is designed to emphasize the importance of developing and maintaining healthy eating choices and physical activity habits.

This year’s theme for the campaign is ‘Put Your Best Fork Forward,’ which acts as a reminder that each bite counts and how simple changes in food choices can have positive effect over time. The theme is geared toward encouraging individuals to start with small changes in eating habits, such as preparing meals at home or making healthy selections while out.

Members of the Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, community can meet with dietitians at both Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis regarding feedback on eating patterns, weight management issues

and the fundamentals of nutrition.

“With a little bit of knowledge every person has the power to start making changes towards a healthy lifestyle,” said Mary Jane Rewinski, MacDonald Army Health Center health management clinic registered clinical dietitian. “Also, realizing that no one can just change the way they eat overnight, it takes time for people to really make adjustments and not only incorporate the changes, but keep them in place.”

According to Rewinski, the foundation for healthy body function and structure is proper nutrition. To perform at an optimal level, every day the body and brain must receive the six essential nutrients, carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and water.

“You really have to think about food as fueling your body,” said Monica Richardson, 633rd Aerospace Medicine Squadron health promotion coordinator. “You want to fuel your body properly for activity and that’s how you maximize

energize levels, maintain healthy body weight and get all the vitamins and mineral you need when you are mindful of what you are eating.”

Richardson and Rewinski suggest incorporating a variety of nutritious foods into your diet to find what you enjoy the most, then you may be more likely to adhere to the healthy eating lifestyle.

JBLE members can join nutrition and physical fitness classes offered by the nutritionists and health promotion offices, to learn about healthy body function, healthyeating and weight management.

The JBLE Health Promotion office offers a 10-session weight management program called MOVE!, which stresses health and wellness through proper nutrition and physical activity.

The 733rd Logistics Readiness Squadron worked with supply specialists assigned to the 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) during a week-long training at Joint Base LangleyEustis, Feb. 27, 2017, through March 3, 2017 to showcase the Air Force’s supply management processes.

During the training, Soldiers shadowed Airmen within the three warehouses at Langley Air Force Base. The service members discussed the different ways Airmen store and keep inventory of individual protective equipment and how the processes of storing hazardous material differs from storing other materials.

Not only did service members discuss the Air Force’s pro-

cesses, but they also went over Army procedures.

For U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Marco Perez, 733rd LRS asset management section chief, the purpose of the training, which was specially designed for the 733rd LRS, was to ensure tactics, techniques and procedures were communicated and understood by all.

“Each [Soldier] got to see a different perspective,” said Perez. “Our systems interface with the same Department of Defense system and our technical procedures for the most part are the same.”

While the service’s share similarities in procedures and communication, their scope of specialties differs.

Soldiers within logistics are assigned to a Military Occupational Specialty, which allows them to become an expert

in more areas within supply, whereas Airmen are assigned to a specific Air Force Specialty Codes for a particular skill.

U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jeremy Roberts, 733rd LRS mobility readiness spares package NCO in charge, who assisted in training the Soldiers, said he learned a lot from working alongside the Soldiers and plans on sharing his insight with his unit.

“What I learned from them is how to be flexible,” said Roberts. “We’re so focused on a particular job skill that it’s sometimes a hard transition to go into another section. With [Soldiers] they expect it; it’s almost standard.”

With less than three years of service, Garcia started her career as a warehousemen and recently moved to the Army’s motor pool. Her day-to-day operations include dispatching vehicles, commuting to Fort Eustis to pick-up vehicle parts or supplies and processing parts. This training provided her the opportunity to learn more about other service’s logistics procedures.

“I enjoyed it a lot,” said Gar-

cia. “I got to learn more than what I knew with just the Army supply.”

Despite the differences in uniform and agencies each unit supports, both Air Force and Army logistics are fundamentally the same, which made communication between the service members seamless.

Through cohesive collaboration, these units are able to use the training as a way to provide the necessary support to accomplish the JBLE mission.

THE TRUE STORY TELLERS OF MILITARY HISTORY

“Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it,” said George Santayana, philosopher.

Historical events in the military such as World War I, World War II, the Cold War, Operation Desert Storm and many others hold remarkable stories within their past. Many of which would go untold without historians who worked day and night to capture every detail.

Without the meticulous work of the historians at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, and historians across the U.S. Air Force these stories would never be taught to children as their teachers convey how the Air Force flew over 700,000 sorties during the Korean War. “We’re contemporary historians,” said Mike Dugre, Air Combat Command historian. “We are capturing the Air Force’s history as its happening.”

The job of the ACC historian is to

produce 300 to 400 pages of annual history with 2000 to 3000 supporting documents, capturing everything that happened that year within their assigned unit.

Inside those mounds of pages and documents include objective analysis of both good and bad decisions made by leadership, what the results were of those decisions and how it affected their respective units.

“We provide historical context and perspective to decision makers, so that they can make better informed decisions,” said Bill Butler, Air Combat Command deputy command historian.

While historians must capture their own unit’s history, they also work handin-hand with other historians across the military. If a decision or event affects more than one unit, historians collaborate and share information to capture the story, as a whole.

past logos and emblems of the units on base. If a unit wishes to revert back to a prior emblem the historians can help by recovering all the older emblems and assist in changing the current one.

While on deployment, the job of a historian is primarily the same, but instead of

annual reports they are required to write monthly contingency reports. Those reports focus on the unit’s combat operations while at the deployed location.

Without the historians and the job they perform, we, as people and the U.S. Air Force, wouldn’t be who we are today.

JBLE Family Child Care Program The Joint Base Langley-Eustis Family Child Care Program is looking for child care providers. They are searching for those interested in a professional, portable career that will allow those to stay at home and run a homebased business.

The program is available for children ages two weeks to 12 years old. Child care providers must be at least 18 years old be able to read and speak English, be in good health, and willing to undergo a background check.

The FCC will provide training and materials to get your business started. Training may include First Aid, CPR, health, safety, developmentally appropriate practices and child guidance. All individuals providing child care in their home for more than 10 hours a week must be licensed.

JBLE Child and Youth Programs’ new services The Joint Base Langley-Eustis Child and Youth Programs will now offer 24-hour in-home family child care for children 2-12 years old whose parents are required to work overnight, holidays or weekends. While the program aims to assist families with work schedules outside the normal operating hours, the program is available to families where there is no one else in the household available to provide care.
