Mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, followers and leaders – these are some of the important roles Soldiers in the U.S. Army fulfill. However, of these Soldiers, only one can claim the honor of being the 7th Sustainment Brigade’s Noncommissioned Officer the Year.

That Soldier is Sgt. Eddie Partee, an information technology manager assigned to the brigade’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 10th Transportation Battalion.

Since joining the Army in 2007, Partee prepared to compete for awards, such as Soldier of the Month honors, even as a private.

“It didn’t matter who I was going against, I felt I was going to win. I competed against a specialist who had so many ribbons on his chest, and I had only three; but after the results came out, I found out he won by only one question,” said Partee. “From then on I was motivated and confident that I could compete. Luckily, others noticed and kept recommending me to go to more boards.”

Partee was no different than his peers when it came to study methods. But as he progressed in rank and responsibility, he used resources more readily avail-

He sponsored his section Soldiers while they participated in Soldier of the Month boards, which in turn helped him prepare for his upcoming competitions. At home, he received the support of his wife, Staff Sgt. Cassandra Partee, and their twins, Malia and Jayden.

“I have learned when you stop at the bare minimum you learn very little. I now take my Soldiers to the board which constantly keeps my mind fresh,” said Partee. “At home, my wife quizzes me and tries to incorporate it into our daily routines.”

Noncommissioned officer of the year is a huge accomplishment which demands a lot of dedication and perseverance from junior leaders. Partee has no reservations with this, and for him, going to the board was never a question.

“The Army is competitive. If you are not out there looking to be the best, then you won’t move up in position,” said Partee.

“One way I knew that I could stand out in

the company, battalion and amongst my peers was to go to the board.”

Partee will move on to represent the “Resolute” brigade at the XVIII Airborne Corps NCO of the Year competition at Fort Bragg, N.C., in the spring.

“It felt great to win but it doesn’t stop there. I expect it to be more challenging, but I am ready. The hard part now is preparing for what are they going to ask me,” said Partee.

While earning these accolades is a great accomplishment, Partee said his ultimate goal is to become a drill sergeant. As a private in Basic Combat Training, he did not know what his future held until he met a staff sergeant there.

“When I met my drill sergeant on that first day, I knew immediately I wanted to be in his position,” added Partee.

Partee said he feels there is nothing stopping him from reaching his military goals because he knows what he wants from life

and how much his family counts on him.

“You can’t wait for others to make choices for you, especially when you want more responsibility and respect in the Army,” he said.

“You will never know what you can do until you actually go to board. The benefits and accomplishments are there waiting for you,” Partee added. “Others will start to recognize you as someone who sets the example. Who knows? You could be the next command sergeant major, or could be standing right beside one.”

Although ďŹ&#x201A;u season typically peaks in February, the inďŹ&#x201A;uenza-related death toll continues to climb as the nation is impacted by an increase in inďŹ&#x201A;uenza illnesses, with 47 states reporting widespread geographical activity. This surge is also being seen in the Hampton Roads area and Joint Base Langley-Eustis with a 10 to 20 percent increase for this time of year, causing medical professionals to urge Service members to take preventative actions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Non-immunized children up to 18 years old have been particularly hard hit, but all ages are affected,â&#x20AC;? said Lt. Col. Brian Ortman, 633rd Medical Group public health ďŹ&#x201A;ight commander. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Health professionals are seeing inďŹ&#x201A;uenza and other respiratory illnesses, including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). InďŹ&#x201A;uenza A (H3N2) has been the predominate strain this season, which might indicate the increased severity as H3N2 ďŹ&#x201A;u seasons typically tend to be more severe.â&#x20AC;?

According to Ortman, Service members and their families can take preventative actions to avoid becoming affected by the ďŹ&#x201A;u. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The most effective way to prevent the majority of ďŹ&#x201A;u infections is through an annual vaccination, combined with proper hand washing and cough etiquette.

Hand washing and use of sanitizing gels can reduce infection rates by 30 percent,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vaccine is an excellent match for the ďŹ&#x201A;u strains being seen.

Still, a small percentage of vaccinated people do get the ďŹ&#x201A;u, although usually milder and shorter duration.

While children seem to be most affected this year, Ortman said everyone six months of age and older is recommended for vaccination against the ďŹ&#x201A;u, and

If deciding whether or not to stay home, consider if you have a fever more than 100.5 F with cough or sore throat,â&#x20AC;? said Ortman. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If a medical quarters order is needed, or symptoms worsen or persist, individuals should make an appointment with their primary care manager ďŹ rst, or visit the Emergency Department if necessary. â&#x20AC;&#x153;AFI 36-815, Absence and Leave, provides sick leave guidance for civilian employees,â&#x20AC;? Ortman continued. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The 633rd MDG encourages commanders and supervisors to use discretion with similar guidance for military members.â&#x20AC;?

According to Ortman, there is still a substantial supply for those needing the vaccine.

Since Sept. 11, 2011, the U.S. Army Reserve has mobilized more than 200,000 Soldiers in support of operations around the globe, including Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and New Dawn. However, the need for skilled Soldiers is occasionally warranted within our own borders in response to terrorist attacks and natural disasters.

To meet this need, the Soldiers of Bravo and Delta Companies, 5th Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment stand ready and on-call as part of the Defense CBRN Response Force (DCRF), a 5,200-person task force built to assist civilian first responders to save lives, relieve human suffering and facilitate response operations following catastrophic chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) or natural disaster events.

The Soldiers of B. and D. Co. have served on DCRF since Oct. 1, 2011, when they received a two-year assignment to provide up to eight CH-47 Chinook helicopters in support of recovery and relief efforts anywhere within the United States. Upon order, the unit will deploy its forces within 24 hours, calling in more than 150 Reservists to serve as needed.

The companies run a full-time staff of approximately 25 Soldiers performing daily duties and accomplishing flying missions tasked by other agencies during the week.

Soldiers working their normal full-time shifts, with the remaining Soldiers activated on Active Duty Operation Support, or ADOS, orders in support of DCRF. Army Reserve Chief Warrant Officer 2 Tyler Thompson, a CH-47 pilot and B. Co. operations officer, said while the unit has not yet been called upon under DCRF, the Soldiers are “ready to go when called upon.”

“We were prepared for ‘Superstorm Sandy’ a few months ago, even though we didn’t wind up getting called,” said Thompson. “We’d had our routes built, called ho-

tels in the New York and New Jersey areas, had our pilots and crew on-call and had started to pack things. We heard about the damage and destruction on the news, and took the initiative to get ready to go.

“A big part of our planning is finding out what airports in the affected area could support, figuring out who’s operational,” he continued. “Some of the airports may have been damaged or can’t operate as normal, so we called to make sure we found airports that had fuel and could host us to land and establish a tactical operations center and launch from there to accomplish our mission.”

To streamline response times, Thompson built 12 binders filled with flight plans in the months leading up to the start of their tasking. The binders include comprehensive information about aviation support facilities across the country that can support the team in their travels.

“For example, if there’s an emergency somewhere in Kansas, we know we have an ASF out there, so the books have routes, flight plans and load plans for each and every aircraft,” he said. “It’s something I can grab and go. I don’t need to sit down and plan that flight again - I already have it ready to roll.”

The CH-47 Chinooks can carry up to 50,000 pounds, hauling anything from relief supplies like pallets of water and non-perishable food to serving as casualty evacuation aircraft. The unit previously demonstrated the airframe’s civil support value during Hurricane Katrina

relief operations in New Orleans in September 2005.

“We can move pallets of water, pallets of [meals, ready to eat]. We can lift and reposition concrete barriers and move debris out of the way. We can even serve as a CASEVAC, as we can put 24 litters on each aircraft to move patients. It’s an extremely versatile aircraft,” Thompson explained. “We can fly faster and at higher altitude than other airframes, flying up to 10,000 feet at optimal performance. We can even carry auxiliary fuel tanks that allow us to be in the air longer.”

Sergeant 1st Class Ronnie Hurst, D. Co. enlisted standardization instructor for crews, said the training and preparation that goes into supporting the DCRF mission makes the unit’s Soldiers “among the most proficient” in the Army Reserve.

“Everybody imagines the Reserve as ‘one weekend a month, two weeks a year.’ Our guys have at least another 60 days of training annually to stay proficient,” he said. “That ends up making our proficiency rate higher than average across the board. More of us are doing our jobs or training on a daily basis.

“We’re operating like an active duty unit in everything we’re doing. A lot of us have active duty experience in the past,” Hurst continued. “It’s extremely beneficial, because when you have to be ready to respond around the clock, you learn what kind of people you have.”

In 1982, the U.S. Air Force that welcomed Airman 1st Class Anthony Brooks to the family was drastically different from today.

Thirty years ago, the Air Force was flying F-15 Eagles, there was the rank of buck sergeant and Strategic Air Command was in place. Now, at 65 years old, the Air Force has the F-22 Raptor, Air Combat Command and approximately 350,000 fewer active-duty personnel.

In 1982, the 27th Aircraft Maintenance Unit became the first home of Airman 1st Class Anthony Brooks. Thirty years later, the 27th AMU also welcomed his son, Airman 1st Class Gabriel Brooks.

“The United States Air Force is so big,” said Airman Brooks. “It was such a coincidence that I got stationed at the same place that was my father’s first duty station.”

The 27th Fighter Squadron is the oldest fighter squadron in the Air Force, and is tasked with providing air superiority for the United States and allied forces. Since arriving at Langley in July 1975, the squadron has been deployed to many locations throughout the world, including Canada, Egypt and the Netherlands, along with supporting Operations Desert Storm and Shield. With such a rich history, it is easily understandable why Airman Brooks is proud to

serve with the unit.

“With my father being here, and now me, it seems to form some kind of legacy,” said Airman Brooks. “This is the oldest AMU in the Air Force, so it instills pride within me to be a part of it.”

Although father and son were both a part of the 27th AMU, both the Brooks specialized in different aircraft-creating a friendly rivalry.

Airman Brooks serves as an avionics systems specialist on the F-22 Raptor, whereas his father was a crew chief on the F-15 Eagle.

“We always get at each other,” said Airman Brooks. “About who has the better job or who is smarter; but at the end of the day, we were both a part of the same team.”

Anthony Brooks said he is very proud of his son for choosing the Air Force, as well as his own choice to join the service 30 years ago.

From the time he was an Airman, Anthony believed the Air Force looked after its Service members-treating them like family.

“I would not be who I am today without the Air Force,” explained Anthony. “There is nothing I can think of that I would have done differently in the military. I hope my son gets to feel the same when it is all said and done.”

With rapidly advancing technology, Anthony advises his son to stay up-to-date with all aspects of his job.

“I tell my son to be a sponge,” said Anthony. “Learn as much as you can about your job and as fast as you can.”

Anthony’s advice does not fall on deaf ears. Airman Brooks has already expressed that his goal in the near future is to make senior airman below the zone, as well as staff sergeant within four years- following in the footsteps of his family.

“This has become a family tradition,” Airman Brooks said. “I’m third-generation Air Force. My grandfather was in; my father was in and now so am I. This is who we are.”

Originally slated for December of last year, Air Force officials will perform a major upgrade to the Military Personnel Data System, or MilPDS, in March.

TheAir Force Personnel OperationsAgency here will upgrade and transfer MilPDS to the Defense Information Systems Agency Defense Enterprise Computing Center. The project is expected to take 23 days. During the upgrade, MilPDS will not be available.

The delay allowed officials to complete testing and validation to ensure the new system performs properly. Upgrades to MilPDS have not been accomplished previously because the system was scheduled to be replaced in 2008 by a new Department of Defense military personnel system. When the DOD program was cancelled, Air Force officials made the decision to bring MilPDS up-to-date in order to reduce risks.

“We are confident that we will be able to upgrade MilPDS in March so we can address security, reliability and sustainability risks with the current system,” said Robert Corsi, the Air Force Assistant

Deputy Chief Of Staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services.

Total Force Service Center representatives in San Antonio and Denver worked with Air Force component headquarters agencies and base-level personnel and pay service providers to develop procedures to accomplish critical functions for all Airmen during the MilPDS upgrade. Critical personnel and pay processes related to accessions, reenlistments, Guard and Reserve unit training assemblies, mobilization/activation, casualty and immediate separations will continue to function during the scheduled system downtime. Other personnel and pay processes will be held during the cutover period and processed once the upgrade is complete.

Air Force officials will release additional information and guidance to the Air Force’s manpower, personnel, services and pay communities and total force Airmen to explain how the service will perform personnel and pay tasks during the upgrade and scheduled system outage.

The Air Force released a new Vision document outlining the force’s vision and way forward.

“Focused on ‘Airmen, Mission and Innovation,’ I believe this short document captures what today’s Air Force is all about and where I think we ought to focus on for tomorrow,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III in an email to all Airmen.

“We are the greatest air force in the world because of our Airmen – Active, Reserve, Guard and Civilian – to remain the greatest, we must make our team even stronger,” the Vision states.

The Vision discusses the Air Force’s enduring contributions of air and space superiority; intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance; rapid global mobility; global strike; and command and control and the need to strengthen them.

“We already combine our air, space, and cyber forces to maximize these enduring contributions, but the way we execute these five calling cards must continually evolve as we strive to increase our asymmetric advantage,” the Vision says. “Our Airmen’s ability to rethink the battle while incorporating new technologies will improve the varied ways our Air Force accomplishes its missions.

“Every Airman should constantly look for smarter ways to do business. The person closest to the problem is often the one with the best solution. Leaders should empower Airmen to think creatively, find new solutions, and make decisions,” according to the Vision.

The Vision concludes with a call to action for all Airmen to tell their story, being proud of who they are, what they do, and how well they accomplish the mission.

ATV safety: What you need to know before you ride off-road

At the first sign of warm weather, a persistent rumbling heralds their arrival. They travel in packs, congregating in various parking lots. The appearance of the motorcycle provokes a variety of safety courses required to ride motorcycles on base.

Off the road, the rules are different, but the danger is the same. While allterrain vehicle safety courses are not required, or provided, by Joint Base Langley-Eustis, riders are encouraged to enroll in safety courses provided in the local community, such as those provided by the ATV Safety Institute.

In 2010 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported 317 reported deaths related to ATV accidents, and 115,000 related injuries treated in an emergency room. Since 2008, the U.S. Air Force suffered only four ATV-related deaths and 186 injury incidents.

“Four lives may not seem like a big deal but every Airman and Soldier’s life is important to us,” said Air Force Master Sgt. Richard Sennett, Air Combat Command Air and Space Operations Division motorcycle safety representative. “We want to avoid all incidents if possible, by encouraging riders to enroll in safety courses.”

According to U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Andrew Burgett, 733rd Security Forces Squadron traffic noncommissioned officer in charge, Fort Eustis has seven military police personnel who have taken safety courses and are certified to ride ATVs and help with traffic issues and wildlife on base.

“Our traffic investigators with ATV certifications come in handy during inclimate weather,” Burgett said.

“They ride ATVs out to check road conditions and place warning signs for unsafe conditions.”

“ATV safety courses are similar to motorcycle safety courses, but with a few differences,” Sennett said.

around wildlife and environmental safety with weather changes.”

To date, 44 states passed ATV safety laws, with each statute tailored to meet the needs of its particular region. Although safety courses are not required in most states, ATV riders are expected to know and adhere to the laws in their area.

According to the CPSC, 211 reported ATV-related deaths have been in Virginia alone since 1982. Virginia’s ATV safety laws include: ■ ATVs with an engine larger than 50 cubic centimeters that have been purchased as new on or after July 1, 2006 are required to be titled.

■ All ATV riders must wear helmets.

■ No one under 16 may operate an ATV. Children between the ages of 12 and 16 may operate ATVs of no more than 90 ccs and children under

age 12 may operate ATVs of no more than 70 ccs.

■ No passengers are permitted on an ATV at any time, unless the ATV is designed to be operated as such.

“Riders should make sure to follow basic safety tips,” said Sennett. “Riders should make sure to wear proper protective gear such as helmets, long pants and shirts, gloves and protective footwear. ATV riders should never ride alone and never drink and ride.”

While some courses may be offered free through ATV companies, many courses are available at a cost to the rider. The ATV Safety Institute offers courses for ATV owners and anyone thinking about purchasing an ATV. Though other deployment planning guides and resources already exist, Thompson said, DOD leaders wanted to offer family readiness assistance to the entire active duty, National Guard and Reserve force and their families.

While the pace of deployment across the services has dropped since U.S. forces left Iraq and will continue to decline as the combat mission in Afghanistan draws to an end, Thompson said, service members always will face the possibility of deploying for duty. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s face it: military members deploy all the time. ...

The Fort Eustis Command Judge Advocate Claims office is helping injured Soldiers avoid paying too much in attorney fees through its Assistance to Injured Parties Program.

According to James Akridge, the Fort Eustis Office of Command Judge Advocate chief of claims, the purpose of the program is to educate and help injured personnel understand the costs of legal services. While the staff does not serve as legal counsel, they provide valuable legal advice to personnel.

Staff Sgt. M. Fanchon White, a 1-210th Aviation Regiment, A Company operations noncommissioned officer, was involved in a vehicle accident, and heard from a close friend about the help she could receive.

“I am happy that this program is available to Soldiers,” she said. “The program helped me to know what to expect and how to handle the stress of the aftermath of a car accident.”

However, the program is not available to all Soldiers. Once a Service member hires a lawyer,

the claims office is prohibited from speaking with the individual without the lawyer’s consent.

“Early identification is important because patients with lawyers are not eligible for the assistance program,” said Akridge. “The claims office works with their lawyers, but the calculation of fees generally is not discussed.”

According to Akridge, the program originated 17 years ago as part of the Army’s Medical Affirmative Claims Program, which is Congressionally-mandated as part of an agreement that all branches of service appropriately recover the cost of medical care from accident insurance.

It has since evolved into a more comprehensive program to fulfill the Army’s mission to collect claims, improving efficiencies across the board.

Joy French, a dual employee of MEDDAC and the Fort Eustis Legal Office, has built a network within McDonald Army Health Center that identifies injured parties as they come in for medical treatment.

The assistance program now includes a three-hour briefing featuring information tailored to Virginia claims practice.

Akridge’s years of experience on claims against the Army offers insight into what is important when it comes to evaluating damages, and how insurance companies evaluate and settle claims.

“The bulk of the briefing is to assist those with minor injuries and who do not wish to hire counsel,” said Akridge. “I offer common guidelines for when an attorney might be appropriate, and discuss numerous options short of paying a third of your recovery to a law firm.”

The Assistance to Injured Parties Program is available to all military personnel, including family members and retirees, and those covered by TRICARE. Members of other services are directed to points of contact within their respective agencies.

His fedora tilted over his eyes, 17-year-old William Ledbetter rolled through a series of bluesy arpeggios along the rosewood fretboard of his prized Gibson Les Paul guitar, his expression as fluid as the notes flowing from his fingertips. Upon bending the high-E string on the last note, he flashed a brilliant half-smile to his admiring parents, exhibiting his trademark coolness that complements his musical abilities.

William’s talents recently earned him top honors at the U.S. Air Force’s “You Got Talent” Nell Buckley Performing Arts Series competition, winning first place in the Teen Solo Instrumental Act category at Langley Air Force Base’s community center.

The award is only the latest acknowledgment of William’s abilities, and, per his ambitions, definitely not the last.

The young virtuoso’s foray into music began at the tender age of 3, when he started toying with the piano. His mother, Tammi Haggins-Ledbetter, recalled his “little hands” not being able to reach the piano keys properly, and him having to wait until age 5 to pursue piano seriously.

William excelled at piano, taking lessons from teachers throughout his family’s many moves with the U.S. Army, as his father, Army Lt. Col. William S. Ledbetter, serves as an engineering officer. However, as he grew older, William began to discover a wider array of music – and new musical instruments.

“William and a friend were both in a talent show, and his friend played a guitar solo. From there, all he kept saying was ‘Mom, I want a guitar!,’” Tammi said. “I thought he was just being a copycat, but he was very persistent, so I bought him a kit.”

William knew playing guitar was his calling when he heard the classic rock anthem “Back in Black” by AC/DC. “That was the first song I had to learn how to play. I loved that song, man,” he said. “Needless to say, my first attempts at playing it were awful.

It was all choppy. It just didn’t flow.”

Undeterred, he turned to the internet, researching chords, tunings and scales to improve his skills. Slowly but surely, the notes began fitting together and flowing more seamlessly.

“When he was 14, he was a 4-H camp counselor. They have a contest called “Share the Fun.” His father recommended it, but he chose guitar to play instead of piano,” Tammi said. “I dreaded him playing play the AC/DC song, but instead he played a song he wrote himself – and it was absolutely beautiful. He won that competition.”

Tammi watched William blossom into a showman, saddling up beside experienced guitar veterans at impromptu jam sessions at local music stores.

He even coined a nickname for himself: “Mo’betta,” artfully inked onto the pickguard of his beloved Les Paul.

Showmanship aside, William said his love of music drove him to play better, and to have confidence in his abilities.

“I just love music man, and guitar is where it’s at. I was really into classic rock and ‘80s rock, a lot of Guns ‘N’ Roses, stuff like that. But in the past two years, I’ve delved into jazz and blues music,” he said while noodling blues riffs on his Gibson. “I want to push the envelope of my abilities, because there’s no end to music.”

William’s playing has taken him across the country to various work-

shops and music camps, including gigs in Los Angeles, Chicago and Memphis, Tenn. While music is most certainly his passion, William said he isn’t sure he wants to make it a career.

“I’m still trying to make up my mind about what I want to do in life, but I’m leaning toward engineering,” said William, who is considering attending Virginia Tech after graduating from Hampton’s Kecoughtan High School. “I don’t want to make music my career, because I don’t want to take the fun out of it. But, you know, if it happens, it happens.”

William credits his parents for his success in playing, as without their support, “none of it would’ve been possible.” In addition to his mother’s love and support, the family credits his father’s practical military values as keeping William focused.

“I taught him ‘the six Ps – prior preparation and planning prevents poor performance,’ and he’s done well by that,” the elder William said.

“Growing up in a military family has instilled the discipline and drive he needed to excel.”

In tribute to his father, he uses a five eighths-inch steel deep-well socket as a slide, a trick recommended by his dad.

“I’ll always use this socket as a slide. I remember the glass one I had didn’t fit my finger. My dad recommended using this, and it just fit perfectly,” he said. “My dad loves his tools, so it’s my way of showing the love for my dad every time I play.”

The admiration flows both ways.

As much as music has kept William grounded and out of trouble, his spirit of success was something “he was born with.”

“I tell people that this is my child, and of course I love him, but as a person, I really like him. He’s a kind, calm child who doesn’t go with the ‘in-crowd,’ doesn’t give us a lick of trouble,” Tammi said.

“It’s not hard to support him in what he wants to do. He’s just a good person. Music didn’t make him that way though – he’s always been that way.”

As the Army transitions from over a decade of war and looks to the future, a series of powerful global trends will shape the strategic environment and present challenges both at home and abroad. Any future conflict or contingency will inevitably feature a complex mixture of threats, from simple opportunists to groups of opponents sharing common goals and strategies. When combined with current information age technologies, political, cultural and religious agendas and economic realities, commanders in 2020 will face a truly complex environment. At home we face an austere fiscal environment and changing national strategy. In this uncertain future the Army must be ready when called so we remain the joint team’s force of decisive action in our Nation’s defense.

As the architect of the Army of 2020, TRADOC must develop the capabilities that create the intellectual agility and operational adaptability which allow the Army to prevent conflict, shape the environment and, when required, win our nation’s wars. First and foremost, we must always support the most important part of our Army - those in harm’s way - by providing them with cutting edge training, quality Soldiers and leaders and helping them rapidly see and disseminate lessons from

the battlefield. We must also transition our Army to the force our nation needs in the future – from designing the Army of 2020 to the delivering the training, doctrine and leader development programs that the Army of 2020 will require. Finally, TRADOC must learn our own lessons from a decade of war and become more operationally adaptable as an organization. We must develop the capability and capacity to rapidly deliver innovative capabilities and solutions. Our efforts are critical in maintaining a modern Army with a high state of readiness that can fight and win across the range of military operations.

This TRADOC Strategic Plan (TSP) provides the framework that enables mission command while we execute TRADOC operations. This plan is intended to enable commanders and leaders while ensuring we produce the capabilities the Army needs on the schedule the Army requires.

Our task may seem daunting, but history is on our side. As we approach our fortieth birthday, we look back and remember that TRADOC’s first mission was rebuilding and redesigning the Army after Vietnam. Our founders faced that challenge and delivered some of the most innovative solutions in training, doctrine and equipment our Army has seen. Dermatology Clinic move The Dermatology clinic will begin transitioning its last patients from the NASA clinic the morning of Jan. 17.

The Virginia War Memorial will host its third annual Artifacts Roadshow on Jan 26 from 10 a.m. to noon at 621 Belvidere St., Richmond. This event is free and open to the public.

War Memorial curator Jesse Smith and military collectables expert Robert House of Virginia Beach will review and offer their opinions on the origin and history of military-related items from all eras. Polar Plunge Winter Festival The 21st annual Polar Plunge Winter Festival benefiting Special Olympics Virginia will take place Feb. 1-2 between 6th and 9th streets on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.

The festival will kick off at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 1 with the Cool School Challenge (school groups will take the Plunge at noon). More than 3,000 thrill-seekers are expected to brave the chilly Atlantic Ocean wearing nothing but swimsuits and zany costumes at the Plunge, which takes place at 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 2.

Participants need to raise at least $100 to plunge, all of which helps to provide year-round training and athletic competition to more than 11,000 Special Olympians of all ages. “Plungers” who have raised $100 online will be eligible for prizes including a $100 iTunes gift card, a custom Coppertone surfboard or an Amazon Fire Tablet. Without much pause, the reverend continued his sermon – his voice a mixture of intense power and quiet serenity.

“One of the ways to rise above this self-centeredness is to move away from self and objectify yourself in something outside of yourself,” he said. “Find some great cause and some great purpose, some loyalty to which you can give yourself and become so absorbed in that something that you give your life to it.”

The reverend went on to say men and women have found a higher purpose or calling throughout all generations, across borders and through boundaries of race, sex and religion.

The drive to do this is something greater than a need to channel one’s ego, it becomes a calling.

“We look through history. We see that biography is a running commentary of this,” he said. “We see a Wilberforce. We see him somehow satisfying his desire by absorbing his life in the slave trade, those who are victims of the slave trade. We see a Florence Nightingale. We see her finding meaning and finding a sense of belonging by giving herself to a great cause, to the un-nursed wounded.”

The reverend continued.

“We see an Albert Schweitzer who looks at men in dark Africa who have been the victims of colonialism and imperialism and there he gives his life to that. He objectifies himself in

COMMENTARY FROM PAGE 2 this great cause. And then we can even find Jesus totally objectifying himself when he cries out, ‘Ye have done it unto the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.’”

We also saw Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. standing behind the pulpit of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, Aug. 11, 1957. We saw him, just six years into the future, carry his message to the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., where he shared his dream with more than 200,000 civil rights supporters. And tragically, we saw that dream cut short when he was assassinated by James Earl Ray at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968. He was only 39.

King believed in something greater than himself. He believed people had a choice between serving one’s own desires and ambitions, and serving something greater – something higher. King believed service, not servitude, was the key to our future. As he stood in that church, on what was an unbearably hot day, King shared that belief, centered on the question life poses to all people, with any who would listen.

“Every person must decide at some point whether they will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness,” King said. “This is the judgment: ‘Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?”

While Soldiers will execute the DCRF tasks as they are ordered, they don’t succeed without a little help. Hurst credited the civilian employees of the ASF at Felker Army Airfield for keeping the CH-47 fleet ready to go at a moment’s notice.

“The biggest challenge is keeping our aircraft ready, and you’ve got to applaud our civilian maintainers here that work to keep those aircraft ready to go 24/7,” he said. “We have to continue flying to get our proficiency, execute mission taskings we receive from other units throughout the week and have a sister company preparing for a deployment to Afghanistan. We couldn’t possibly do what we do without their dedication to keeping our aircraft ready.”

Thompson and Hurst said the always-on-call nature of the DCRF mission adds a wrinkle into the lives of Soldiers serving in the battalion, as they need to consider their responsibilities when making off-the-clock plans.

“In some ways, I have to build my life around it. If I want to go somewhere for a week on vacation, I need to ensure before I go that someone can fill in for me in case something happens, or that I can get on a plane, fly back immediately and be a part of that first force package,” Thompson said. “We know that any extra costs associated to cutting a vacation short to get back in time are our responsibility. We understand that we need to be able to fulfill our obligations.”

Despite the immense responsibility that comes with responding immediately at any given time, Thompson said serving the homeland is a rewarding experience.

“It’s an honor to be involved and it’s a great experience as we continue to fly and train throughout the mission,” he said. “We haven’t been called yet, and this is a good thing. We’re ready to go, but we don’t want anything to happen that we would be needed for. An army is great, but you never want to actually have to use it.”
