First female F-35 test pilot completes flight mission By 412th Test Wing Public Affairs

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, CALIF. (AFNS)

A routine F-35 Lightning II flight test mission recently marked a significant event in Air Force history at Edwards Air Force Base, California.

Maj. Rachael Winiecki, 461st Flight Test Squadron developmental test pilot, completed the first flight mission led by a female.

“I may be the first female developmental test pilot (in the F-35), but (test pilots) are just one small part of the test enterprise,” Winiecki said.

She said although aviation tends to be a male dominated field, the number of women in flight test is increasing. Winiecki said that there are several female test directors, test conductors, discipline engineers and flight test engineers at the 461st FLTS, in addition to those serving in engineering, maintenance and support functions. Namely, she spoke about her crew chief for the mission, Airman 1st Class Heather Rice, of the 412th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron.

“It was great having Airman Rice there,” Winiecki said. “I am very proud of the work she does on the line, and I’m glad that she is part of our team.”

Before joining the 461 FLTS, Winiecki commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps. Upon completion of pilot training, she flew the A-10C operationally including deployments to Southwest Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Pacific theater. She then graduated from the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards and was previously assigned as an F-16 Fighting Falcon test pilot with the 416th Flight Test Squadron.

“Major Winiecki was selected to become an F-35 test pilot based on her exceptional flying ability and the important voice she brings to the F-35 development as a prior A-10 (Thunderbolt II) pilot,” Hamilton said.

Winiecki said that having the ability to bring the A-10 mission sets to the 461st FLTS, such as close-air-support, combat search and rescue and forward air controller, is important so the focus is not just on the air-to-air capabilities of the F-35, but also the air-to-ground capabilities.

“I really do appreciate the perspective that I can bring coming from the A-10 and the F-16 to hopefully bring some influence from that perspective.

As testers, the contacts we have back in the Combat Air Force are valuable,” she said. “We can reach out to our networks to solicit feedback, solicit information on how we could and should accomplish our mission sets in the future.

That’s really where we can open doors.

I can reach back to my friends and contacts in my previous community just like other test pilots here.”

As a member of the 461 FLTS, Win-

iecki will be part of a team that oversees developmental testing of all variants of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to become part of the diverse team at the 461st. While there may only be a few individuals in these photos (of the event), there are countless dedicated personnel working hard to ensure we execute safe, secure, effective and efficient flight tests.”

After Winiecki concluded her first mission, she reflected not just on her milestone, but also on the other women who have contributed to the history of Edwards and the Air Force, while also looking to the future.

“I am grateful for the women who have broken barriers previously, they built the path,” Winiecki said. “I look forward to the day when sorties like this are a regular occurrence.”

“Major Winiecki’s accomplishments are exactly why we continue to be at the center of the aerospace testing universe,” said Brig. Gen. E. John Teichert, 412th Test Wing commander. “Breaking barriers is what we do, with historymaking impact every day for the warfighter.”

Mentorship program provides support to Army women

Being a woman in the military can be challenging, but the Army provides female Soldiers the opportunity for mentorship and support. The Sisters in Arms program is specifically designed to support women and helps women in the Army with mentorship, career progression, and camaraderie.

Capt. India Simpson, commander, Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, said the program is open to women of all ranks and provides an open forum where Soldiers can share their own experiences for everyone’s benefit.

“Sisters in Arms is a mentorship program that was developed for Soldiers to openly discuss, teach, coach, and learn from one another about the Army,” said Simpson. “The program benefits woman in many ways. Having annual meetings along with activities and lessons, helps with bonding, growth, and career progression.

sergeant, with HHB, 10th AAMDC, said the program has helped her and many other Soldiers like her who face unique challenges.

“It is used as a support group for single parents, dual military, widows, same gender marriages, and any other challenges that women in uniform face on a daily basis,” Hearns said. “The program is beneficial for women in the military because it brings women of all trades together and helps women with resiliency for situations that other women may have experienced.”

SIA provides Soldiers like Hearns an open platform to mentor, teach, learn, and bond. For her, the program is a chance to help all women within the ranks grow and progress in their careers, which contributes to the Army’s overall mission.

“The program is for all women in the military, including both enlisted and officers. It was designed to bring women from all backgrounds together to uplift one another and to share their experiences and goals,” Hearns said.

Woman in the military face many challenges. The diversity throughout the ranks of the Army makes each woman’s challenge and story unique. It is a leader ’s duty to help each individual overcome these challenges. The junior enlisted Soldiers are the future of the Army and with a program that allows mentorship will help mold a better tomorrow for the organization.

“Junior enlisted Soldiers are able to learn from situations and mistakes that other women may have faced while serving in the military,” Hearns said. “They also have the opportunity to get mentored by individuals within the group, which could help with career progression.”

The program gives women the opportunity to boost morale and comradery.

Women being able to support and learn from other women despite rank is what the program encourages.

Sgt. 1st Class Mary Watson, a career counselor, with HHB, 10th AAMDC said SIA helps build a better team of woman working toward a common goal.

“Boosting camaraderie and esprit de corps between women in the military helps women feel a part of a group and understand that we are all in the same fight,” Watson said. “The program fosters an environment for us to learn from each other ’s experience while grooming Soldiers to remain or become competitive for progression.”

The Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment wants YOU — and there’s a big bonus for signing up

The Army isn’t offering a bonus to enlist as an infantryman right now, but if you’ve ever thought about serving in special operations as a Ranger, there’s a bonus available both for recruits and for trainees already at basic.

There’s a $10,000 enlistment bonus available to 11X candidates with a Ranger contract, according to a Jan. 3 Facebook post from 75th Ranger Regiment Recruiting æ and if you’ve already started infantry one-station unit training, you can get the bonus if you transfer to the regiment.

There are also up to $46,000 in re-enlistment bonuses available not only for infantrymen but for carpentry and masonry specialists, radio maintainer-operators and others who pass the selection

process and join the special operations unit.

Many of the jobs are in intelligence, logistics and artillery, but even musicians are in high-demand – there’s a $15,000 bonus for them.

The United States isn’t out of the game yet when it comes to space, but if it wants to remain on top, it will need to do more and do it faster, a senior Defense Department official said today.

“China is integrating certain new technologies and fielding those capabilities faster than the U.S.,” said Chris Shank, director of DOD’s Strategic Capabilities Office. “That means we have to be more responsive.”

Shank spoke during a presentation in San Diego hosted by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, where he pointed out some statistics re-

garding space launches last year.

“China had 39 launches, the U.S. had 31, Russia had 20, [and] Europe had eight,” Shank said. “And [China] landed a robotic mission on the dark side of the moon — a first.”

Shank said that while he doesn’t think the U.S. has lost leadership in space, it is losing ground. After all, he noted, the United States isn’t without its own recent achievements in space.

Winter weather staggered release zones The 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron is working to better prepare JBLE members and their families for the potential effects of winter weather. JBLE uses staggered release to allow personnel who live greater distances from base to get on the road before the storm worsens and to mitigate traffic delays that may occur if all members were to depart at the same time. Captain Marvel takes flight: New footage shows film star in Nellis F-16

By Stephen Losey Air Force pilot-turned-Avenger Captain Marvel will hit the big screen in two months, and the first footage of the film’s star, Brie Larson, flying with actual Air Force pilots, has just been released.

A short behind-the-scenes featurette — which first aired during the college football championship game Monday night — shows the flight-suited Larson during her January 2018 visit to Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. Larson is shown hanging out with Thunderbirds pilots and in her F-16 sortie, during which she got up to 6.5 Gs and took part in a simulated dogfight.

The time visiting with Air Force pilots also apparently helped Larson understand where her superhero character — whose real name is Carol Danvers — is coming from.

“The thing that I found so unique about this character was that sense of humor, mixed with total capa-

bility in whatever challenge comes her way,” Larson said. “Which, I realized after going to the Air Force base, is really what Air Force pilots are like.”

Larson also met with Brig. Gen. Jeannie Leavitt, the Air Force’s first female fighter pilot, while she was at Nellis, but the former 57th Wing commander is not shown in the clips.

This will be the first film appearance of Captain Marvel, although a post-credits sequence in last year ’s Avengers: Infinity War all but announced she will also play a part in the fourth Avengers film. After Thanos’ infamous snap in Infinity War, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury grabs a beeper and manages to send out a distress call (which looks like Captain Marvel’s starshaped icon) before he too dissolves into ash.

Tricare Prime Suffolk opens summer 2018

Tricare Prime Suffolk will open a Family Practice and Pediatric Clinic in summer 2018 at 7021 Harbour View Drive, Suffolk, Virginia. The clinic will open seven days a week for active duty, retirees and family members, with pharmacy pick-up available.

Pharmacist Cough and Cold Clinic

The Langley Hospital will provide a Pharmacist Cough and Cold Clinic starting Feb. 12, 2018. Patients who cannot get an appointment with their provider right away and do not want to wait at the ER can check in at the Family Health front desk to be seen by a clinical pharmacist on a walk-in basis, Monday through Friday from 8 to 10 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Service is available to all active duty and Department of Defense beneficiaries 18 to 70 years of age who are enrolled to Langley Hospital. Patients who are on flying status or Personal Reliability Program, are immunocompromised or have symptoms over 10 days cannot be seen at the Cough and Cold clinic. For more information, contact Tech. Pharmacy hours expanded

Effective immediately, the hours of operation for the Langley Hospital and Satellite Pharmacies will expand to better serve patients. The Hospital Outpatient Pharmacy will now open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Satellite Pharmacy located at the Air Force Base Exchange will now be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Satellite Pharmacy Kiosk located inside the commissary will continue to be open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA gate) changes

Security Forces personnel will no longer man the Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA Gate). Personnel will still have their credentials checked by guards at the main NASA gate, however, their credentials will not be checked again at the Durand Entry Control Facility. NASA guards will still man their side of the Durand Entry Control Facility and will only allow CAC holders (no dependent ID cards) to enter NASA property. Additionally, no commercial vehicles are allowed access to NASA property. The Durand Entry Control Facility hours are from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
