The theme for this year’s event is “Don’t Wait, Check the Date”, stressing the importance of maintaining efficient smoke detectors inside your homes. The Fort Eustis Fire and Emergency Services Flight is dedicated to educating families on fire safety, the importance of having an evacuation plan and ensuring that every bedroom has a functional smoke detector.

The National Fire Protection Association conducted research based on its National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, NFPA 72, which determined most smoke detector failures are attributed to removal of batteries, improper wiring, dust and insects and age old sensitivity. Due to the numerous outcomes, NFPA 72 states, “Replace all smoke alarms, including those that use ten-year batteries and hard-wired alarms when they are ten years old or sooner if they don’t respond properly when tested.”

It is imperative that smoke detec-

tors be tested regularly to help identify if operability is sufficient. Testing should be, but is not limited to, once a month or per the manufacturer’s recommendation.

Statistics show that education must be provided to our nation’s communities on the importance of smoke detectors in each home.

The Ft. Eustis Fire & Emergency Services Flight has and will continue to maintain the “Door to Door Smoke Detector Campaign” for all members living in housing. This campaign begins Oct. 10 from 4p.m. to 6 p.m., and will continue throughout Fire Prevention Week until 100 percent of the on base housing community has been reached. Tenants will be educated on the following tips: -Installation of smoke alarms and what dictates the placement of each alarm -How and when to test smoke alarms -When a smoke alarm sounds what to do -When to replace batteries and detectors

KIDS MOVE HELPS FIGHT OBESITY working together “as aBycommunity, we

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month and one in three children in the U.S. are overweight or obese. A survey of the data for McDonald Army Health Center in 2010 showed a similar prevalence of overweight and obesity in our military dependent children.

The U.S. military needs volunteers to be healthy enough to answer the call for military service, but with more than 12.7 million overweight and obese children and teenagers in the U.S. the ability to meet this call is in jeopardy.

Childhood obesity puts kids at risk for health problems once considered adult health issues such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. These children and teens are also at risk of low self-esteem and may struggle in school as well as have problems with body image and bullying. Childhood obesity can strain our health care system and economy in the years ahead.

The good news is that childhood obesity can be prevented. Collaborative efforts in recent years have helped the U.S. make progress in preventing childhood obesity and begin to reverse these trends.

The causes of childhood obesity are multifaceted but in the end, the increased risk for childhood obesity comes down to two factors: the lack of physical activity and the over consumption of food and drinks.

Parents are the best advocates for the health of their children. McDonald Army Health Center encourages your family to make healthy choices together. Physical activity is important and children and teens learn behaviors from their parents. It is important to be active individually and as a family, walk around the neighborhood, go on a bike ride, or play basketball or soccer at the park. Decrease children’s screen time including TV, computer, and video games to two hours per day or less. Parents do the grocery shop-

If your child is overweight or obese, McDonald Army Health Center offers Kids Move. Kids Move is a 12 week obesity and overweight treatment program for military children ages six through 17. This is a lifestyle-based program providing nutrition education, behavior modification education, and supervised physical activity including Zumba and yoga. The program focus is on healthy lifestyle changes resulting in weight and body mass index changes. Parental involvement in the program is critical for success.

633rd SOS: Bone marrow recruitment saves lives

The 633rd Surgical Operations Squadron hosted a bone marrow recruitment drive Sept. 16, 2016 at the Base Exchange and Shellbank Fitness Center at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia. Volunteers donated and registered their samples with the C.W. Bill Young/Department of Defense Marrow Donor Center who partner with the National Marrow Donor Program.

The program was established to recruit volunteer marrow donors from active-duty military, their family members, civil service employees, Coast Guard, National Guard, reservists, between the ages of 18 and 60 and in good health.

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Nicole Reding, 633rd Surgical Operations Squadron, medical technician said when she first found out about the Bone Marrow Program she wanted to get involved.

“I think it’s a good cause,” said Reding. “It’s a great volunteer program that can potentially benefit those in need of bone marrow or stem cells.”

According to the DOD Marrow Donor Center website, the military is the nation’s largest source of whole blood donations because military members meet strict health and age guidelines that the program requires. A bone marrow or blood cell transplant is a potentially life-saving treatment for patients with blood diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma.

Once volunteers sign a short health questionnaire and provide DNA samples, the MDS sends the samples to the National Marrow Donor Program in Minneapolis, Minnesota where the volunteers’ information is placed in the national registry until their 61st birthday.

“I’m always looking to help people,” said Senior Airman Arnold Sandoval, 633rd Force Support Squadron, fitness specialist. “I’ve donated blood, platelets, plasma and if I’m a potential match, I will definitely give bone marrow.”

Sandoval said as a wingman he is providing a service for not only other Airman but for civilians and family members.

“This recruitment drive is so important because at the end of the day it’s all about saving lives no matter who they are,” said Sandoval. “You may not know the individuals you’re helping but I think it’s my duty to volunteer and serve others who are in need.”

If a donor is a preliminary match for a specific patient in need of a bone marrow transplant, they will be contacted and asked to consent to further testing.

If found to be a match, the volunteer will be asked to donate marrow or stems for the patient.

Senior AF leader gives Army joint perspective

The diamond council at Fort Eustis, Virginia invited an U.S. Air Force senior leader to talk to U.S. Army first sergeants during a quarterly meeting Sept. 23, 2016.

U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Jack Johnson Jr., NATO Allied Command Transformation senior enlisted leader, has served in many positions throughout his career, to include first sergeant and command chief master sergeant, which has provided an extensive amount of leadership opportunities and experiences that he shared with the diamond council.

“It doesn’t matter your rank, your skin tone or gender, none of that matters. What’s important is to understand that everyone matters,” said Johnson.

“When I started, I said ‘thank you because you’re all important’. America’s mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and many others may not understand what you do to support this nation, but I’m here to tell you that they count on you every day.”

Johnson has served in joint capacities throughout his career as chief of conventional mission management at Joint Operations Directorate and superintendent of the 31st Intelligence Squadron, giving him the experience to be able to relate to leaders and the challenges they face with troops in a joint environment.

“I talked to senior NCO’s and said we are all leaders and your job is to educate, organize training, equip and send your troops off to fight,” said Johnson. “Then I challenged them and asked, ‘Are you smart enough to know why you’re sending them off to potentially die?’ As leaders we have to be able to explain the why.”

For Johnson, working with other branches of the U.S. military brings alternative perspectives, experiences and knowledge.

“Everyone grows from listening to different perspectives. The world is so dynamic and diverse that as leaders, ev-

ery perspective we can get counts,” said Johnson. “That’s what [the diamond council] is about. I’ve had the privilege of serving across the nation and taking my experiences of challenges to educate the leaders who came today to have an open dialogue, which gives everyone the opportunity to grow.”

For U.S. Army Master Sgt. Ryan Reichard, C Company 1-222nd Aviation Regiment first sergeant, talking to leaders from other services is beneficial for the future of the Army and his Soldiers.

“Gaining information coming from different branches on how they work allows us to take that information and the knowledge, and pass it down to the younger generation who will eventually replace us,” said Reichard.

According to Johnson, coming together and learning from each other can only make the U.S. military stronger.

“At the end of the day, we are all Americans regardless of service,” said Johnson. “Coming together with the Ft. Eustis diamond council allows us to learn from one another because not only do we learn from each other, we train together. And, if the nations calls upon us, we all fight together.”

Both teams were focused as they chopped vegetables and herbs, seared meat and meticulously plated their dishes.

This quarter’s competition is the final competition for fiscal year 16. The Army board winners will compete against the previous quarter winners in an annual competition.

Although this event may seem small it carries some pretty high stakes for its competitors. The winner of the annual event gets a slot at the culinary school at Fort Lee. For a food service specialist this an opportunity to take their career to the next level.

The competition involved customers sampling from both teams’ menus, while keeping the identity of the team that cooked the meal hidden. The diners then voted on the food they liked the most, and voted for the winner of the Diner’s Choice award.

Before the announcement of the winning team, Command Sgt. Maj. Quillar Ransom, 7th TB (X) command sergeant major, started by thanking the Air Force for coming out.

“You can cook.” Ransom said. “I’m glad that these individuals got a chance to come together and show their skills.”

Ransom and Young presented the Army’s Culinary Chef Board winners with Army Achievement Medals and then announced that the Army was the winner of the Diner’s Choice Award.

After the medal presentations it was time to announce the Army as the winners of the Commander’s Cup. U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Joseph Youngs, 633rd FSS food service operations section chief and contest judge, said, “It’s all about food service. What we say in the Air Force is we fuel the fight. That is what we do. Food is a very important part of what we do, so is competition and so is stress. I know that is what these teams went through today, but it makes them better leaders, better Airmen, better Soldiers, Young concluded.”

ARMY ISSUES NEW GUIDANCE ON ROLLING, CUFFING SLEEVES News Release U.S. ARMY

Uniform sleeves can now be rolled either with camouflage facing in or out, depending on the preference of commanders down to the company level.

In addition to the new guidance on rolling sleeves of the Army Combat Uniform in garrison, commanders in the field can now authorize Soldiers to cuff ACU sleeves either with the camouflage facing in or out.

The changes are effective immediately, according to a memorandum signed Tuesday, Sept. 27, by Lt. Gen. James C. McConville, the Army’s deputy chief of staff, G-1.

For the past three months, sleeves had to be rolled or cuffed with the camouflage facing out. The new guidance gives commanders more flexibility.

“These changes enhance individual readiness and morale and give greater flexibility to commanders in determining the needs of their Soldiers in the performance of their mission,” said Lt. Col. Jerry Pionk, spokesman for the Army G-1.

The original G-1 memorandum authorizing Soldiers to roll ACU sleeves with camo facing out was issued June 28 of this year. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley decided on the uniform change, following requests from Soldiers throughout the force made through Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel Dailey. The decision followed a month-long trial with Soldiers at Fort

Hood, Texas, rolling their ACU sleeves.

Until then, sleeves had not been rolled since the battle dress uniforms or BDUs were phased out almost a decade ago.

The guidance on rolling and cuffing ACU sleeves pertains to those of the universal camouflage pattern, or UCP; operational camouflage pattern, known as OCP; and the Operation Enduring Freedom pattern.

The decision on how to roll or cuff sleeves can be made by company commanders of the Army National Guard and Army Reserve as well as the active component. During a battalion, brigade or higher formation, the most senior commander will decide how the uniform will be worn, according to the guidance.

Sleeves can only be rolled in garrison, and despite whether the camouflage is exposed or rolled inside out, the sleeves must be rolled neatly above the elbow, but no more than three inches above the elbow. Sleeves of the Army aircrew combat uniform, or A2CU, will not be rolled under any circumstances, the guidance states.

During field training or when deployed, commanders may authorize Soldiers to cuff their ACU sleeves one or two times, either inside or out.

The changes are an exception to Department of the Army Pamphlet 670-1, Guide to the Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia, until a new pam is issued.

Uplifting event provides breast cancer awareness

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. However, due to better treatment options, there are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors thriving in the U.S. today.

Since the month of October is dedicated to raising breast cancer awareness, hosting a fundraiser, organizing a bake sale or running for a loved one in an awareness run are all common events. One of the events comes with a unique twist.

The Fill the Bra Campaign is an uplifting event where people are asked to decorate an original bra which are placed on display and voted on by the local community. Donations and funded votes go to help those with breast cancer who are not insured or underinsured.

“The campaign provides a light-hearted approach to the cause, bringing everyone together in a creative way,” said Wendy Elvis, 633rd Medical Group lead mammography technologist and fill the bra campaign participant. “It’s a community event; we are all members of the community and our military members are fortunate enough to have provided healthcare. However, there are members of our community that don’t have insurance or are underinsured. This event raises money for those members.”

According to Jamie Radik, 633rd Medical Group mammography technologist and fill the bra campaign participant, along with raising money, the campaign educates women who are nervous about getting mammograms. The more women perform self-breast exams and mammograms on a regular basis, the earlier breast cancer can be caught which increases the chance of survival.

Breast cancer incidence rates have decreased since 2000, partly due to earlier screening and better treatment, but also with an increase in awareness, said Radik.

Both technologists in the mammography department at U.S. Air Force Hospital Langley, Elvis and Radik were inspired by the Air Force motto, ‘Fly. Fight. Win.’ when decorating their bra for the campaign.

“To fly, to soar, to fight the disease with everything you have and to ultimately win against it,” said Elvis. “We felt the need to represent our military for what they give to our community, so we wanted to do something patriotic, military and of course, Air Force.”

Competitive career opportunities exist via officer crossflow program AIR FORCE PERSONNEL CENTER PUBLIC AFFAIRS

One of today’s opportunities for officers to broaden career options comes from the nonrated line officer crossflow program, which currently has openings for officers on active duty in certain career fields to volunteer for retraining into undermanned career fields.

The program is designed to optimize the officer inventory and reduce risk in several key mission areas where low manning levels are more severe.

Maj. Christopher Moore is a former communications and information officer who volunteered to retrain in 2005 and chose public affairs. Moore served a year as the public affairs adviser to former Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh and to Gen. Dave Goldfein while he was the Air Force’s vice chief of staff.

Now, Moore is the Air Force Command Information deputy division chief, proving that fear of being non-competitive in a new career field is unfounded.

“When you leave your core community for another, it is intimidating,” said Moore, who crossflowed from the community that would eventually become cyberspace operations. “However, that feeling doesn’t last long. In public affairs’ tight-knit family, you’re surrounded by talented Airmen and given an opportunity to grow into your new role as an Air Force communicator.”

Crossflow is a permanent move into a new career field. Officers will maintain their original Air Force specialty code as a secondary AFSC, but the AFSC they crossflow into will become their primary and future assignments will be determined based on the new AFSC. Moore had the opportunity to lead public affairs efforts at a busy mobility wing, was selected for an Education with Industry assignment and intermediate developmental education inresidence, and commanded a combat camera squadron before his assignment with the chief of staff.

“Having talented, motivated officers join public affairs mid-career is not new to us,” said Brig. Gen. Ed Thomas, the Air Force Public Affairs director. “We have experience setting them up for suc-

cess, just like Maj. Moore. Another crossflow officer is serving as a numbered Air Force public affairs director and one of our most recent crossflows has been selected to get her master’s degree through the Air Force Institute of Technology.”

This year, company grade officers from year groups 2009–2013 in logistics readiness, personnel, public affairs, civil engineer, behavioral scientist, and chemist and biologist career fields are eligible to volunteer for crossflow into cyberspace operations, space operations, and munitions and missile maintenance.

Field grade officers from year groups 2004–2008 in the personnel, developmental engineer and acquisitions, chemist and biologist, civil engineer and behavioral scientist career fields are eligible to volunteer to crossflow into cyberspace operations, intelligence, aircraft maintenance, operations research analyst and public affairs.

“Every day as a public affairs officer is challenging, yet rewarding. The information environment is always evolving and it’s amazing to work new ways to tell our Air Force story,” Moore said.

The special duty assignments branch at the Air Force Personnel Center is accepting applications through Oct. 12. A panel of five colonels representing the affected career fields will convene in October to select volunteers for crossflow. Unlike past multi-phase programs, this year’s program is voluntary only and there will not be an involuntary follow-on phase.

There are several program exemptions. Careful review of the crossflow eligibility and application messages to determine eligibility before beginning the application process is encouraged.

Officers will be notified by December to begin reporting for training in their new career field during the summer 2017 assignment cycle.

Public Affairs sergeant major shares his own Hispanic Heritage story

In 1991, Jose A. Velazquez Jr. was a 19-year-old trying to escape the hopelessness of the projects north of Boston. He had failed out of community college and was working in a factory pressing suits. But he had dreams and goals beyond the factory.

His mother wanted him to be “a somebody,” and he saw an opportunity to make something of himself in the Army. So he did. He joined the Army as a broadcaster in 1991 and today he is the Sergeant Major of Army Public Affairs, where he advises the Chief of Army Public Affairs on all enlisted matters affecting the career field.

Velazquez shared his story Sept. 21, speaking for Hispanic Heritage Month to employees from TACOM Life Cycle Management Command and the Detroit Arsenal. He expressed hope that people in the audience would recognize parallels with their own life stories.

“Many of us who come from other places or whose parents came from other places can indeed rise and reach the American dream,” he said.

In the early 1960s, before he was born, Velazquez’s parents moved to the U.S. from Puerto Rico. Like many other immigrants, they came here for opportunity — to find work in factories, in fields, wherever unskilled labor was needed. He too went to work in a factory. It was there that a coworker one day asked him what he wanted to do with his life.

“I told him I had an interest in working in radio and television,” Velazquez remembered. “But without a degree, there was no way I was going to get there.”

When the coworker told him that he had seen someone appear on TV when he was serving in the military in Germany in the early ‘80s, Velazquez was nonplussed.

“That sounded very strange to me,” Velazquez explained. “All I knew about the Army was tents and people screaming at you, but it piqued my interest enough to go down and speak to the recruiter, and he told me, indeed, that was a field I could get into.”

Velazquez asked if he would get paid from day one.

The recruiter told him he would, and Velazquez told him to sign him up. “And I was gone,” he remembered. So began his Army career. His rise through the ranks was not necessarily easy, nor was it difficult.

“It was simply a matter of my drive and my desire,” he said. “That’s what’s terrific about the Army. It allows you to go as far as you choose to go, and as far as your drive and your skills will allow you to go. It’s the perfect fair environment for you to make of yourself whatever you choose.”

Looking back on his career today, he doesn’t think being Hispanic in the Army served as either an ad-

vantage or a disadvantage. Rather, the values instilled him — the loyalty and devotion to community and family, the high regard for fairness and patriotism that he grew up with — were in keeping with the Army values.

“If anything, it was a great benefit,” he said. “I was a really patriotic kid and I grew up in an environment where, although it was largely Hispanic, there was a lot of patriotism and love of country for the opportunities that the United States gives to folks who come here from other countries.”

Hispanics come to the U.S. driven by the desire to do well, Velazquez explained, to succeed and to be included in their communities.

“Those folks that come from other countries, in particular the Latin countries, come here and many of their children desire to serve, to give back as a form of thanks to a country that gave their families an opportunity,” he said.

According to Velazquez, the number of Hispanic Soldiers in the Army has been on the rise since 1985, but it is still lower than the percentage of Hispanics in the U.S. population.

“The Army is 11 percent Hispanic compared to 17 percent of the population,” he said. “We still have some work to do to mirror our civilian world, but it’s surely better than 1985 [when] we were only at 3 percent, so we’ve grown significantly since then.”

In his remarks, sergeant major offered advice to Hispanic-American Soldiers and civilians who are just starting their careers in the Army today, encouraging them to take advantage of the Army’s educational opportunities and training.

“Always search for those hard jobs that are going to get [you] promoted and are going to give [you] the opportunity to succeed,” he said.

In addition to sharing his own story, Velazquez told the Hispanic Heritage Month audience about several contributions Hispanics have made to the Army. One such contribution was made by Sgt. 1st Class Gregory A. Rodriguez from Weidman, Michigan.

According to Velazquez, Rodriguez died during an intense small-arms firefight in Afghanistan, leaving behind a wife and three children, “who carry his memory and courage in their hearts.” Velazquez called him a great American and “a product of the rich tapestry of his Hispanic heritage.” “’Rod,’ as his friends called him, was a die-hard Red Wings fan,” Velazquez said. “He’d mess with his Army buddies from other states and wonder how anyone could root for another team. That was Rod. He chose to stand and be counted as one of the men and women who decided to protect our country and our way of life.”

a Puerto Rican unit of the Army that was active from 1899 to 1956. In April 2016, the unit was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. The unit was the first Hispanic unit and the sole unit from the Korean War to receive the medal. It is regarded as one of the most highly decorated units in the history of the U.S. military.

Velazquez also discussed the results of a review of military records directed by Congress. The review was meant to ensure that acts of heroism deserving of the Medal of Honor were not overlooked or rejected because of prejudice or discrimination.

Following the years-long review of thousands of records, 17 Hispanic Army veterans were awarded our nation’s highest award for valor in 2014 in the largest Medal of Honor ceremony in history.

Opinions may differ on whether observances like Hispanic Heritage Month unite or divide the Army, Velazquez said, but he believes they are necessary to allow people “to pause, reflect and celebrate the diversity of people and cultures that continue to build and strengthen our Army and our nation.”

“We celebrate our differences because our differences always make us who we are,” he said. “That’s what makes us uniquely American. As a Hispanic American I can stand next to an American of European descent, of African descent, of Middle Eastern or Asian descent — we’re still all Americans.”

Velazquez said he was honored that day to share his experiences as a Hispanic-American service member.

He said that of all his accomplishments the one that today remains the most important to him was simply making his mom proud.

“She worked so hard to ensure that I would become a somebody,” he said. “For her, that meant somebody who got an education and got a profession. So I did both.”

His mom passed away in 1997.

“But prior to her passing away I was very proud to share my degree with her, to bring it home,” he said.

“She held it in her hands and said, “You’re a somebody now.”

JBLE provides the flu shot Active Duty personnel only will be provided the flu shot from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Community Commons on Oct. 5-6, 2016. All beneficiaries, 9 years and older, will be provided the flu shot from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Community Commons on Oct. 7, 2016. Beneficiaries younger than 9 years old must receive their shots at the USAF Langley Hospital. To prevent long lines and increased wait times, installation personnel are encouraged to visit the POD during the designated times. However, this is only a recommendation. Active Duty members can visit the POD during any of the dates/times listed above to get their flu shots. 633rd CES Fire Department hosts Fire Fighter Challenge 633 Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Department will be hosting a Fire Fighter Challenge competition during our 2016 Fire Prevention Week Open House at 1 p.m. at the Fire Station on Oct. 14, 2016. The competition is open to all squadrons on JBLE and must be a four person co-ed team. This relay event does not require each team member to complete all of the timed events. The teams are required to wear firefighting gear to include, pants, coat, gloves, and helmet. The relay event includes carrying a 3 ft. hose 50 ft., a 35ft ladder climb, and a Keiser sled pull.

JBLE Family Child Care Program The Joint Base Langley-Eustis Family Child Care Program is looking for child care providers. They are searching for those interested in a professional, portable career that will allow those to stay at home and run a homebased business.

The program is available for children ages two weeks to 12 years old. Child care providers must be at least 18 years old be able to read and speak English, be in good health, and willing to undergo a background check.

The FCC will provide training and materials to get your business started. Training may include First Aid, CPR, health, safety, developmentally appropriate practices and child guidance. All individuals providing child care in their home for more than 10 hours a week must be licensed.
