U.S. Army Master Sgt. Donna Schwan, a career counselor for the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Maneuver Center of Excellence Army Reserve component, was recently recognized as the Secretary of the Army Career Counselor of the Year at the 2015 Association of the United States Army Dwight David Eisenhower Luncheon meeting in District of Columbia.

While going through multiple levels of boards for the competition was a strenuous process involving physical, written and oral tests, Schwan said the experience was the pinnacle of her career.

According to Sgt. Maj. LeeAnn Conner, a senior career counselor with the U.S. Army and board member for the award, Schwan excelled in all areas of the competition which included a physical fitness test, written test and board presentation.

“During the board process, Master Sgt. Schwan had superb communication skills and demonstrated them with a broad range of knowledge in all areas,” said Conner, adding that Schwan also proved to be an expert in her field through the written test.

“She was very articulate and passionate in answering direct and open ended questions on tough subjects during the board.”

For Schwan, her passion came not from proving her knowledge, but improving the Army, as the questions were geared more toward insight to create better processes within the career counselor field.

“They really wanted to know our input especially in regard to how it impacted our job,” said Schwan, of speaking with Army leaders during the oral portion of the board. “I valued that portion the most because a lot of people don’t get to speak to those decision makers and have a voice.”

Along with proving her devotion to service through the oral boards, Conner said Schwan’s 27-year Army career, which began in the Women’s

Army Corps, also helped her achieve the CCOY accolade.

“Master Sgt. Schwan has been very successful in a broad range of duty assignments as a Reserve Component Career Counselor, which gives her an edge of experience,” explained Conner. “She continues to push to better herself, such as being inducted into the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club and completing Combatives level 2.”

While Schwan said she had memorable experiences throughout her career, being recognized at the luncheon coupled with the journey to the award was the apex of her 27-years of service.

“At the Association of the United States Army forum, we were recognized by generals and dignitaries,

which was an honoring, humbling and proud moment,” said Shwan, who was handed the award by U.S. Army Gen. Mark A. Milley, the Chief of Staff of the Army. “I can never go beyond that experience -- that is the best.”

While Schwan has reached what she considers the largest milestone in her profession, as a career counselor, she hopes to help and inspire others to better themselves and the Army.

“When opportunities do come, take advantage of them to expand your knowledge,” said Schwan. “And networking; it improves your personal career, which you can later share with others -- that’s more important than anything else, you have to pay it forward and share with others.”

U.S. Service members will partner with members of the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force (RAF) and the French Air Force (FrAF) for the inaugural Trilateral anti-access/area denial exercise scheduled for Dec. 2-18, 2015, at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia.

The exercise, hosted by the 1st Fighter Wing (FW), will focus on operations in a highly-contested operational environment through a variety of simulated adversary scenarios. According to U.S. Air Force Col. Pete Fesler, the commander of the 1st FW, the intent of the exercise is to gain an understanding of the logistics, support requirements, capabilities, tactics, techniques and procedures associated with the integrated operation of coalition front-line ďŹ ghters. “The RAF and FrAF are our vital strategic partners and allies in the current ďŹ ght against extremism, and will be in any foreseeable future conict,â€? said Fesler. “The trilateral exercise gives us an opportunity to train

together in realistic counter-air and strike scenarios.

This training is critical to ensure that we have day-one interoperability for future contingency operations.�

According to Fesler, international exercises like the Trilateral Exercise have helped the 1st FW learn to work with coalition partners in the past, such as during the Western Zephyr exercise in 2015, where the 1st FW worked with the RAF to enhance joint capabilities.

More than 500 people will be involved in the exercise, consisting of approximately 225 personnel from the U.S. Air Force, 175 from the RAF and 150 from the FrAF. According to Fesler, partnering with coalition forces for training is critical to ensuring the 1st FW and its allies are ready to execute their mission when called upon.

The exercise will not only feature the U.S.’s Raptor, but also the RAF’s Typhoon and the FrAF’s Rafale as primary aircraft. The Trilateral Exercise will be the ďŹ rst time these coalition aircraft have own together.

Adversary aircraft will be replicated by the U.S.’s F15E Strike Eagles and T-38 Talons. The U.S.’s Airborne Warning and Control System, as well as U.S. and FrAF tankers will also provide support during the exercise.

While there will be more aircraft ying out of Langley, the level of noise in the surrounding area should be no different than normal.

Shortening the distance between Airmen and Soldiers

For the first time, since the inception of Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, the varsity basketball team, JBLE Raptors, will compete with both U.S. Airmen and Soldiers.

The 12 Airmen and six Soldiers, all of who are set to participate in the Washington Area Military Athletic Conference are one of four joint base teams to compete in the WAMAC this season.

According to Staff Sgt. Casandra Bernhardt, 633rd Force Support Squadron, JBLE’s varsity basketball program gives Service members the opportunity to build a stronger relationship with their joint base counterparts, which in turn, builds a better sense of respect and camaraderie.

Raptors team captain, Staff Sgt. Marshawn Martin, 358th Automatic Cargo Detachment says, he appreciates the opportunity to join forces with Air Force personnel, since many others may never get the chance, however it still brings challenges.

“You don’t get this opportunity to work with Air Force personnel, especially at Fort Eustis, so to come new to a team that’s already established and try to make a name for yourself is difficult,” said Martin. “I just want to be productive and help my teammates understand their roles.”

Building personal relationships outside

of work and basketball is an important aspect of sports that Airman 1st Class Dakota, 36th Intelligence Squadron, strives for with his teammates to overcome trials like communication and language barriers between services.

“We’re coming together as a team and the hardest thing to do is to get the chemistry right and that’s something we work on day in and day out,” said Dakota.

“We’re all learning the plays while getting to know each other. We play cards and hang out to get a feel for each other outside of basketball.”

Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis merged on Jan. 29, 2010, and are 19 miles apart but the services have proven that distance and time does not matter when they work together.

“From the ground to the skies, we get to work with every armed forces service,” said Dakota. “Being able to work together on the basketball court, shows that we can work together from something very small to something very big and how much we like playing with one another.”

The Raptors competed in the first tournament of the season during the weekend of Nov. 7th and 8th playing teams from Fort Drum, New York; Fort Myers, Virginia and Fort Meade, Maryland. After a tough start due to a short staff, the Raptors finished the weekend with two wins and two loses said Martin.

For Dakota, playing with Soldiers from Fort Eustis is an example of what the U.S.

military exemplifies.

“We defend one nation,” said Dakota.

“It’s one team one fight and it shows that its one team no matter what, we have the same goal and we’ll come together to accomplish it.”

In 2014, ďŹ ve percent of the U.S. military population was dual-military married couples, a small ďŹ gure in comparison to 46.4 percent of military members married to civilians, according to the Department of Defense.

Being a civilian spouse married to a U.S. Service member can be a taxing experience when deployments, temporary duty assignments (TDY) and permanent changes of station (PCS) are in the forefront of life. The shared sense of purpose is just one way couples can connect and be resilient.â&#x20AC;?

Know what to expect Before entering into a military marriage, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to have realistic expectations of the scenarios dual-military couples can anticipate, according to Military OneSource. Some of the challenges these families face include: separations due to deployments and remote assignments; accepting less-desirable jobs just to stay together; and having to ask for extra help from friends, family and caregivers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Although all couples with at least one active-duty member share the stressor of deployments - dual-military families have the additional stressor of what happens if both must be deployed,â&#x20AC;? Ford said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;On the other hand, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;mil-to-milâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; couples might understand each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work related stressors better too.â&#x20AC;?

Because of the unique pressures dualmilitary couples face, the FAP, Airman &

Family Readiness Center (A&FRC), and the Army Community Service (ACS) provide a variety of resilience services geared toward supporting these families-in-arms.

JBLE Family Child Care Program The JBLE Family Child Care program screens child care providers who watch children in their own homes.

The program is available for children ages two weeks to 12 years old. Holiday Card Lane Contest The 17th annual Holiday Card Lane Contest will take place through Jan. 4, at the Transportation Museum’s fence on Washington Boulevard. All Fort Eustis units, agencies and private organizations are invited to submit entry cards that best symbolize the holiday season. This year’s theme is “A Holiday Salute to Troops & Families.”

All cards must include the unit identifier and measurements must be between 4’ x 4’ and 4’ x 8’ (plywood). The back of the card must be covered in plastic, paint must be weather resistant, and flex ties must be used to attach cards to the fence. Entries can be placed on the fence between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and must be in place no later than Dec. 9 for contest eligibility. Cards will be judged on community message, creativity, design, effort and originality.

Cards that have been placed in previous years may be displayed to show spirit, however those cards are not eligible to participate in this year’s contest. Holiday Run and Toys for Tots Program

Fort Eustis will conduct a Holiday Run at 6:30 a.m., Dec. 11, starting at the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command parking lot. The 2.2 mile run is open to all Soldiers and Department of Defense employees. It also serves as a toy donation event for the Toys for Tots Program. Virginia War Museum Artifacts Roadshow The Virginia War Museum will host an Artifacts Roadshow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Dec. 5, at 9285 Warwick Boulevard in Newport News. Visitors can bring military memorabilia including firearms, edged weapons, uniforms and medals from all eras for review. Local military history experts from the VWM Foundation and Hampton Roads Militaria Society will help identify artifacts and provide preservation tips. ‘A Colonial Christmas’ celebration Visitors can explore 17th- and 18th-century holiday traditions through Jan. 3 at “A Colonial Christmas” celebration at Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center. At the Jamestown Settlement, visitors can learn about the colony’s early years including its Christmas at sea in December 1606. In the re-created fort, visitors can see wattle-and-daub buildings decorated with greenery and view cooking demonstrations, food preservation methods and hunting tools and techniques. Period holiday music and entertainment will take place at the re-created fort church at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., Dec. 5 and 6, and Dec. 26-31.

At the Yorktown Victory Center, visitors to the Continental Army encampment can learn about winter camp life and hear accounts of Christmas during the war. Visitors can also assist the quartermaster in preparing military supplies, view open-hearth cooking and participate in candle-dipping activities. Artillery demonstrations will take place daily at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center value-priced combination tickets are $21 for adults and $10.50 for children ages 6-12. Admission to Jamestown Settlement is $16.75 for adults and $7.75 for children ages 6-12. Admission to Yorktown Victory Center is $9.75 for adults and $5.50 for children ages 6-12. Children under age 6 are admitted free.

Downtown Hampton Lighted Boat Parade The 27th annual Downtown Hampton Lighted Boat Parade will be held at 7 p.m., Dec. 11. The event is free and open to the public. The parade will be visible from anywhere along the Hampton River; however, spectators who want to listen to the narration should find a spot near the Hampton Maritime Center at 710 Settlers Landing Road.
