Special agents from the Army Criminal Investigation Command are once again warning Internet users worldwide to be extra vigilant and not to fall prey to Internet scams or impersonation fraud – especially scams promising true love, but only ending up breaking hearts and bank accounts.

Criminal Investigation Command, known as CID, continues to receive hundreds of reports from people worldwide of various scams involving persons pretending to be U.S. Soldiers serving in Afghanistan or elsewhere, according to CID special agents.

The victims are most often unsuspecting women, 30 to 55 years old, who think they are romantically involved on the Internet with American Soldiers, when in fact they are being cyber-robbed by perpetrators thousands of miles away, they said.

“We cannot stress enough that people need to stop sending money to persons they meet on the Internet and claiming to be in the U.S. military,” said Chris Grey, Army CID’s spokesman. “It is heartbreaking to hear these stories over and over again of people who have sent thousands of dollars to someone they have never met and sometimes have never even spoken to on the phone.”

The majority of the “romance scams,” as they have been dubbed, are being perpetrated on social media, dating-type websites where unsuspecting females are the main target, he said.

The criminals are pretending to be U.S. servicemen, routinely serving in a combat zone. The perpetrators will often take the true rank and name of a U.S. Soldier who is honorably serving his country somewhere in the world, marry that up with some photographs of a Soldier off the Internet, and then build a false identity to begin prowling the Internet for victims, Grey said.

“We have even seen instances where the Soldier was killed in action and the crooks have used that hero’s identity to perpetrate their twisted scam,” said CID Special Agent Matthew Ivanjack, who has fielded hundreds of calls and emails from victims.

The scams often involve carefully worded romantic requests for money from the victim to purchase special laptop computers, international telephones, military leave papers and transportation fees to be used by the fictitious “deployed Soldier” so their false relationship can continue. The scams include asking the victim to

Once victims are hooked, the criminals continue their ruse.

“We’ve even seen instances where the perpetrators are asking the victims for money to purchase leave papers from the Army, help pay for medical expenses from combat wounds or help pay for their flight home so they can leave the war zone,” said Grey.

These scams are outright theft and are a grave misrepresentation of the Army and the tremendous amount of support programs and mechanisms that exist for Soldiers today, especially those serving overseas, said Grey.

Along with the romance-type scams, CID has been receiving other complaints from people worldwide who were scam victims – once again where a cyber-crook was impersonating a U.S. service member.

One version usually involves the sale of a vehicle; where the service member claims to be living overseas and has to quickly sell their vehicle because they are

being sent to another duty station, said Grey. After sending bogus information regarding the vehicle, the seller requests the buyer do a wire transfer to a third party to complete the purchase. In reality, the entire exchange is a ruse for the crook to get the wire transfer and leave the buyer high and dry, with no vehicle.

“These are not Soldiers, they are outright thieves,” said Grey.

The perpetrators often tell the victims that their units do not have telephones or they are not allowed to make calls or they need money to “help keep the Army Internet running,” he said. They often say they are widowers and raising a young child on their own to pull on the heartstrings of their victims.

“We’ve even seen where the criminals said that the Army won’t allow the Soldier to access their personal bank accounts or credit cards,” he added.

All lies, according to CID officials.

“These perpetrators, often from other countries, most notably from West African countries, are good at what they do

and quite familiar with American culture, but the claims about the Army and its regulations are ridiculous,” said Grey.

The Army reports that numerous senior officers and enlisted Soldiers throughout the Army have had their identities stolen to be used in these scams.

To date, there have been no reports to Army CID indicating any U.S. service members have suffered any financial loss as a result of these attacks, according to CID. The victims, though, have lost thousands in these scams, officials said. In one extreme example, a woman from New York took out a second mortgage on her home to get money to help her “Soldier.”

She lost more than $60,000. More recently, a woman from the United Kingdom told CID officials she had sent more than $75,000 to the con artists.

The U.S. has established numerous task force organizations to deal with this and other growing issues; unfortunately, the people committing these scams are using untraceable email addresses on “Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail,” etc., routing accounts through numerous locations around the world, and utilizing pay-per-hour Internet cyber cafes, which often times maintain no accountability of use. The ability of law enforcement to identify these perpetrators is very limited, so individuals must stay on the alert and be personally responsible to protect themselves.

“Another critical issue is we don’t want victims who do not report this crime walking away and thinking that a U.S. serviceman has ripped them off when in fact that serviceman is honorably serving his country and often not even aware that his pictures or identity have been stolen,” said Grey.

“There’s no doubt you have more experienced Airmen today,” Dad said.

He was also quick to point out the focus on physical training had improved drastically since his time in the service.

“Your PT is a lot more important today,” he said. “I think I ran the mile-and-a-half track twice during my time at Langley. That probably wasn’t a good thing, but we knew we weren’t going anywhere.”

Dad was right. Deployments were completely different when he was an Airman. The Air Expeditionary Force was only made a reality at the dawn of the 21st Century. However, he said the biggest change wasn’t deployment restructuring, or a revamped PT program or even a state-of-the-art weapon system that could out-fly anything in the air. My Dad told me the biggest change in the Air Force between Staff Sgt. Tom Denton and Senior Airman Jarad Denton was the focus on the development of people.

“The big change from then to now in the Air Force is the focus on a person’s career,” Dad said. “More attention is paid on how to guide an individual through their career. It has to do with being an all-volunteer force.”

He continued, and I realized how the lessons learned during my Dad’s time in the service are echoed in the processes and benefits available to all uniformed Service members, today.

“There are levels of professionalism within the Air Force that weren’t in place during my time,” he said.

“Those levels – all the opportunities the service offers an Airmen, they make that person more attractive in the civilian job market. Take advantage of them. Take advantage of the possibilities we didn’t have.”

Military OneSource connects troops and families to resources

As the Information Age continues to shape modern communication, the Defense Department has revitalized and consolidated the Military OneSource website to better serve military members and their families, a Pentagon official said in a recent interview.

Zona Lewis, military community outreach online and resource operations manager, told the Pentagon Channel and American Forces Press Service that the Military OneSource overhaul incorporates new functionalities, enhanced social media platforms and multiple access methods.

“We took this opportunity to look at industry best practices, to look at social media capabilities and to investigate making a mobile platform,” Lewis said. “People are accessing information on their phones and iPads today.

They’re not waiting until they get home or back to the office to get that information on a computer.”

The revamping, Lewis said, comes at the behest of President Barack Obama, who sought an overall reduction of government websites, prompting DOD officials to have Military OneSource absorb MilitaryHomefront.

“We looked for commonalities to merge the sites,” Lewis explained. “Though MilitaryHomefront had a service and family member component, it was ... geared toward leadership and service providers [seeking] family programs, policy and reports.”

Officials therefore transferred the leadership and service provider information from soon-to-be retired MilitaryHomefront to the Military OneSource umbrella, Lewis said.

“We ... met the expectations we had for the site. We wanted the content to be easy to find, [with] the website easy to use,” Lewis said, adding that user-driven content enables more customizable information.

“You can see what other people are looking for and see if they’re [seeking] the same thing,” Lewis said, adding the social media aspect of the site enables users to “retweet,” “like” and share mobile- and tablet-friendly information through personal networks.

Lewis noted the particular usefulness of the locator and directory widgets, which enable users to type in their installation and instantly connect to local resources and relocation assistance.

Military OneSource also provides round-the-clock consultants available worldwide to assist with family life topics ranging from moving to nonmedical counseling referral, including anger management and communication skills.

“Military OneSource offers 12 nonmedical counseling sessions per issue per person in your family at no cost,” Lewis said. “[This] is your quality of life program so call, click and connect. We’re there for you.”

The only sound in the room was a cheerful voice, sharing humorous and significant stories. The woman’s eyes lit up as she talked about rewarding memories, and her face became animated – as if every gesture breathed more life into her words.

But her smile faded as she recounted one of the most pivotal moments she experienced in her career.

It was 4 a.m. when the jarring ring woke her. She had no idea who would be on the other end, but knew it must be important – it was the on-call phone.

“This is the command post,” the voice said flatly. “We have a fatality.”

Instantly she woke up, panic rising in her chest. Having only recently started her job, she wondered if she was prepared for what she was about to experience.

When she arrived on scene, she learned two young Airmen were involved in an alcohol-related car accident. Only one survived. She began taking investigation photos, quietly asking the young man who died, “Why? That was the dumbest thing you could’ve done.”

The scene faded from the woman’s eyes, and she paused to take a deep breath before continuing.

“It was absolutely devastating,” said Tech. Sgt. Kimberly Young, 633rd Air Base Wing Safety noncommissioned officer in charge. “It just put everything in perspective that what I do matters. It’s all about the education.”

To Young, that experience ultimately shaped her future in safety. The combination of her love of people and her passion for education led her to become an exemplary Airman and award-winning defensive driving instructor.

“What makes her stand out the most is that she is dedicated to what our safety mission is, which is saving lives,” said Master Sgt. Dawn Moninger, 633rd Air Base Wing Safety superintendent. “She takes that mission personally, and that’s the difference between just doing a job and having a calling in life.”

Although Young has been in the Air Force more than 15 years, her journey to become a defensive driving instructor started only three years ago, when she was

retrained from her current career field.

“Safety was on the list, and I thought, ‘Oh, I can do safety – AF Form 55s? That’s easy,’ because that’s all I knew about safety,” said Young. She smiled as she reflected back to her training experience. “Technical school was a rude awakening, but I started really liking it.”

Young became a certified instructor at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. She began teaching driving safety after she relocated to Lages Field Azores, Portugal. Her primary students were from the First Term Airman Center, which she found to be an extremely rewarding experience.

“When I talk to my FTAC students, they say ‘I appreciate the training you gave me – I was in a situation where I had to make a decision, and I chose otherwise because of your training,’” said Young. “That’s the rewarding thing of it all. When you give them your personal experiences, make yourself vulnerable and open yourself to them, it makes it that much easier. Then they know it’s not just another briefing.”

According to Moninger, Young’s positive energy and attitude has a lasting effect on her students, which makes her teaching more effective.

“She has this dynamic and charisma

about her that reaches out and touches each of her students in ways that motivate them to keep themselves safe,” said Moninger. “It makes a difference when it’s a person who’s instructing from their heart versus instructing from their head, because the people who sit in her class take in her inspiration, and it motivates them to enact in their lives what she’s teaching them.”

Young’s dedication for teaching doesn’t stop in the military classroom. She also pays for instructional materials out-of-pocket in order to teach community members offbase, hoping to instill the same driving safety lessons she teaches Service members.

“We have to learn to bridge the gap with our community,” said Young. “We fight for the rights of the people that don’t fight next to us. If I can go to the desert and fight for them, then why can’t I educate them with having this certification?”

According to Moninger, Young’s dedication and passion for the safety mission is one that leaves an impression not just on her students, but her colleagues as well.

“She is a fantastic role model for my team,” said Moninger. “My team is a group of professionals, but the nature of safety is that we have new NCOs that come in and they’re training as a three-level, so for them to come in a see a role model of her caliber, it really sets the tone for how their training goes, and who in turn they transform into as a safety professional.”

According to Tech. Sgt. Oliver K. Missick, the 633rd Air Base Wing Safety inspection program manager, Young’s devotion to her colleagues touches them on a more personal level as well.

“She’s very enthusiastic and very charismatic,” said Missick. “It affects the office in a positive light, and trickles through the whole office. She’s also very caring – we call her ‘Mother Goose.’”

Moninger said that the qualities that Young possesses carry through in everything she does, and that there are many things that she does on a daily basis that go unnoticed.

“She’s behind the scenes and she’s not getting the kudos for all the unseen things she does,” said Moninger. “It makes it especially poignant when she is recognized because that’s not what she’s seeking.”

Young’s most recent recognition was received during the 2012 National Safety Council Congress and Expo, Oct. 20. Young was awarded the 2011 Defensive Driving Courses Alive at 25 Instructor of the Year award and overall Defensive Driving Course International Instructor of the Year, being recognized for her education efforts while stationed at Lages Field Azores, Portugal. The Alive at 25 course aims to educate those in vulnerable age groups, focusing on defensive driving strategies.

When Madeline Peters brought her out-of control 12-year-old son Jorge into the 733rd Security Forces Squadron’s police station at Fort Eustis three months ago, she didn’t know what to expect. She was at her wits end and out of options in dealing with her son’s rebellious, delinquent behavior, but knew her family wasn’t going to be able to withstand any more of Jorge’s antics.

Veteran Detective Rob Canada knew just what to do.

Canada knew he would not be able to press formal charges against the young man for simply disobeying his parents. However, he also knew he could not let Madeline take Jorge home and risk the probability of his behavior spiraling completely out of control.

“It started as basic teenage things, like threatening to run away from home, but got worse. He started seriously disrespecting me and his stepfather [U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Melvin Peters],” Madeline said.

Having just moved to Fort Eustis from Seattle, Wash., she said risking Jorge disappearing in a strange place “scared us to death.”

After three hours in an interrogation room, the 22-year Army veteran and former Newport News Police Department gang specialist decided to make Jorge his project.

Canada used his experience in dealing with hardened teenage gang members to help Jorge see the errors of his ways.

Jorge went home in tears that night, afraid of the consequences of his behavior. Canada arranged for Madeline to bring Jorge back to the station once a week for 30-minute counseling sessions.

“I worked with all sorts of really, really bad kids before, and I knew he wasn’t a bad kid. He just was getting off track, misled by negative influences at school,” Canada explained. “He needed to really understand what he was doing, why it was wrong and what it was doing to his family.

“I really got him to open to up to me about what he was thinking. I made him do things like writing me a two-page paper about why he should respect his parents and what they mean to him and listing the thinks he likes and dislikes about home,” he contin-

ued. “What I found was a good kid who was peer mirroring the wrong kids. His parents did a good job raising him, and I knew I could get him turned around.”

Gradually, Canada began to see a change in Jorge. Each week, he seemed more attentive, respectful and in control of himself.

Wanting to keep pace, Canada called the Peters’ home to check on Jorge, even calling his school to ensure he was behaving.

Madeline began to see dramatic changes in Jorge’s behavior, something she called “a huge burden lifted off me.”

“He stopped talking back to me and Mel-

vin, stopped nit-picking at his brother and sister and his attitude just seemed so improved,” Madeline said. “I couldn’t believe how much different he was, and I have Detective Canada to thank. He really is a hero.”

Determined to find a way to acknowledge the detective’s family-saving dedication, Madeline contacted WVBT, a local Fox news affiliate. She nominated Canada for the station’s “Hampton Roads Hero Award,” citing his selfless devotion to getting her son under control.

The news station agreed with her praise, and presented the detective with the award on a taped segment for their Nov. 21 latenight newscast.

Canada called the award “one of the most joyous things I’ve ever received.”

“This is better than any award I’ve ever gotten,” he said. “Taking time out to give to someone else is what it’s all about here. I only spent 30 minutes a week with Jorge. I gave up a little of my time because I thought it was the right thing to do. It’s all from the heart.

“So often, I’ve had to enforce discipline to young people who’ve committed terrible crimes, completely headed in the wrong direction.

“I saw an opportunity here to reach a young man who wasn’t that far gone that I could help, and it was a no-brainer,” he continued.

As for being labeled a hero, Canada remained humble.

“I don’t consider myself a hero, but I’m not a zero either,” he said, laughing. “I’d like to think I’m somewhere in between.”

Canada’s program with Jorge is far from over. He estimates at least six more months of weekly visits to ensure Jorge doesn’t stray from his improved ways.

“If I can reach one kid, teach one kid, the world is a better place. I think everyone should reach out and help one troubled kid.

It can change the world,” he said. “I’m going to see this through. He really is a good kid.”

A U.S. Navy information systems technician aboard a U.S. Navy ship looked down at the laptop in his hands on a recent October day and saw something unheard of for Sailors just months before – live video feed from an Air Force Remotely Piloted Aircraft ying in the skies above the ship in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.

Right next to the Sailor, talking him through the process and coordinating with the pilots remotely operating the aircraft, sat U.S. Air Force Capt. Jennifer Hollock, an Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Liaison OfďŹ cer assigned to the N2 at U.S. Naval Forces Central Command.

U.S. Naval Forces Central Command gained the ability to use U.S. Air Force Remotely Piloted Aircraft full motion video feed for the ďŹ rst time beginning in January 2012, due in large part to help from Air Force ISR Liaison OfďŹ cers like Hollock working side-by-side with NAVCENT Sailors.

Full motion video from U.S. Air Force RPAs is widely used by U.S. servicemembers operating on land in operations in Afghanistan, but until recently Navy ships did not access the RPA footage in support of large-scale maritime operations. “With the lessons learned overland, as the drawdowns--especially in Iraq--became realities, servicemembers from both the Air Force and the Navy realized that Air Force RPAs could be a great help to the maritime problem set,� said U.S. Navy Cmdr. Brent Marquand, Chief of Collections, N2, NAVCENT. Acquiring the technology to receive the data was only a small part of being able to use Air Force full motion video. The Navy needed to train Sailors how to make the most of RPA full motion-video, from trouble-shooting the technology to establishing checklists to communicating directly with the RPA pilots.

That is where Hollock comes in. “I work as a liaison among commands to coordinate ISR support,� said Hollock, who helps Sailors over e-mail, phone calls and visits out to the ships. “I’m trying to use some of the lessons learned from the Air

Force to help the Navy build its capabilities.�

For Hollock, who deployed from Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., working in a joint environment during her deployment has given her a new appreciation for Air Force operations. “It’s been eye-opening for me to be on the user-end of Air Force ISR,� said Hollock. “Working with our Navy customers has given me a different perspective. It’s been a great experience.�

From a Navy point of view, the Air Force ISR liaison serves a role similar to that of a translator. Based on her knowledge of Air Force ISR assets, Hollock works with her NAVCENT counterparts to produce information and tools Sailors can understand and use. “Hollock and her predecessors in the Air Force ISR liaison position have established processes and procedures that make sense to both the Air Force distributed ground station personnel and to the Navy end-users,� said Marquand. “The liaison position is a force multiplier, not only for NAVCENT and U.S. Air Forces Central Command, but also U.S. Central Command as a whole.�

The opportunity to work so closely with Sailors has taught Hollock lessons about cooperating across military and cultural barriers that may exist between service branches. “I would tell other Airmen: ‘Continue communicating at every level, from Airman to Sailor. It’s okay if at ďŹ rst you don’t know what a Sailor is talking about, because the Sailor probably doesn’t know what you’re talking about either. If we continue to communicate openly and directly, we can work together to develop common tactics, techniques and procedures,â€? said Hollock.

With NAVCENT Sailors and Airmen continuing to strengthen relationships and teamwork, the U.S. Navy continues leveraging Air Force capabilities in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. “The coordination between AFCENT tactical and NAVCENT tactical units has grown by leaps and bounds,� said Marquand. “We are very comfortable with the invaluable services the U.S. Air Force provides.�

The Army team took the top slot, beating out the Veterans Affairs team in the final round of the Department of Defense Warrior Care Month sitting volleyball competition, Nov. 20, at the Pentagon Athletic Center.

“It means everything,” said Sgt. Monica Southhall, an Army team participant.

“You come out here today and show that regardless of your disability, you are still able to do something fun.”

Army finished the tournament 8-0. VA came in second, Special Operations Command took third, and the Marines, the Air Force and the Navy took fourth, fifth and sixth place, respectively.

Southhall is still in the Army and is assigned to the Community-Based Warrior Transition Unit at Virginia Beach, Va. A wounded warrior, she tore both rotator cuffs and injured her left knee while serving inAfghanistan. She is both a track and field athlete and a sitting volleyball player. As part of the Army’s team at the Warrior Games in 2012, she helped her team take the gold.

Right now, she said, she thinks the goal for the team at next year’s games is pretty much the same as it was last year and the same as it was at the Pentagon competition: to dominate the playing field.

“Last year at the 2012 Warrior Games we took the gold medal -- that’s pretty much our same goal,” she said. “We’re looking to repeat in the 2013 Warrior Games. We get together, we do camps at

different times, to try to keep our momentum going and keep our skills up. I think we can repeat our win again next year.”

Robbie Gaupp, a veteran of the Army and the gold-winning 2012 Warrior Games sitting volleyball team, also helped the Army take the No. 1 slot in the Warrior Care Month tournament. He said winning is all about training.

Even though the Army’s team won gold, he said, “you still have to train hard, you have to practice. No matter, when you take a break for a day, or time off, you start losing basics. You want to go back to basics and fundamentals which creates great athletes.”

Winning gold at the Warrior Games and taking the top slot at the Warrior Care Month competition means a lot to Gaupp.

“It’s great to come out and show ... warriors don’t have to give up, even though you are injured,” he said.

Gaupp initially joined the Army in 2003, but was medically retired as a sergeant in 2010, due to shoulder injuries sustained during Operation Jumpstart, along the Texas-Mexico border.

The competition at the Pentagon was in recognition of the DOD’s Warrior Care Month, said Master Sgt. Jarrett Jongema, the noncommissioned officer in charge of the Army Adaptive Sports and Reconditioning Branch.

The Army hosted the event this year, and Jongema, a wounded warrior himself, said “we wanted to showcase recovery, we wanted to showcase resiliency, and at the same time we bring about awareness of some of the different sports.”

Decisive Action Training Environment: Future training grounded in today’s intelligence

To ensure Soldiers are trained and ready for any mission, the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command’s Directorate of Intelligence created the Decisive Action Training Environment, a program that uses current intelligence to create intense, authentic training environments for Soldiers, leaders and units.

For years, Combat Training Centers have conducted mission readiness exercises for units designed to prepare Soldiers for deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Decisive Action Training Environment, or DATE, allows Soldiers to use combat “tools” to solve tactical problems in a wide range of realworld scenarios derived from actual threats across the Army’s Operational Environment, or OE, instead of a training scenario derived from a known deployment location.

“Soldiers want realism as manifested by a well-trained opposing force, good training areas, role players, and all the things that make combat the complex event that it is,” said Gary Phillips, director of TRADOC Intelligence Support Activity. “DATE is not a rehash of yesterday’s headlines about any place in the world.”

The first step in developing DATE was to establish a framework and analysis for capturing the conditions across a particular OE. Studies focused on the notion of ground operations requiring a brigade-size unit and the expected mission essential tasks. The second step was to look at OEs likely to require Army employment in the near to mid-term future.

The scenarios used in the DATE are not an attempt to determine the next deployment location for U.S. ground troops. Instead, the list of particular OEs act as an aid to inform the training community at the Army’s Combat Training Centers the range of potential conditions U.S. ground forces are likely to encounter based on realworld intelligence.

Flynn, deputy commanding general of operations for the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C. “The changing conditions and variables that units are confronted with place enormous demands on our leaders; they have to remain engaged intellectually and physically. The DATE conditions enable a unit and leader “crucible” at our combat training centers.”

The DATE is further enhanced by scalable exercise design, database creation and manipulation, and OE products from the Training Brain Operations Center, or TBOC, which, like, the TRADOC Intelligence Support Activity, is a component of the TRADOC G-2 OE Enterprise.

For example, in October 2012 the TBOC supported the DATE-based mission readiness exercise for the 2nd Cavalry Regiment at the Joint Multinational Training Center in Grafenwoehr, Germany. Using parameters set by official DATE publications, the TBOC created insurgent, para-military and criminal threat networks, including biographic data sheets for more than 220 unique opposing force roles.

It also created historic databases for intelligence reports, imagery prod-

ucts, and open source messages to add complexity and to facilitate training objectives.

“We help units tailor their exercise to their training requirements,” said Jim Slavin, TBOC director. “The customized databases and on-site expertise give units a better understanding of their OE and the asymmetric threats they’ll face in the future.”

There are eight variables used to create the OEs and they center on the political, military, economic, social, information, infrastructure, physical environment, and time components of a particular area. The variables combined with embedded realworld actors create an array of potential threat capabilities that anticipate future conflicts. Together, they create a picture of the environment’s nature and characteristics that would significantly impact the military if deployed to that area of the world.

According to Maj. Keefe A. Savin, public affairs officer for the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, the DATE exceeded expectations during the unit’s recent rotation at the Joint Readiness Training Center, known as JRTC, at Fort Polk, La. “The fact that this was the first time we have been able to do this type of training and the first time this (Decisive Action Training Environment) has been done at JRTC over the last 10-year period -- we were impressed with the level of training and professionalism we received and can take back into the force,” Savin said. “The training gave us the final few yards to be ready to answer our nation’s call to deploy anywhere in the world on short notice.”

According to Flynn, the DATE scenarios provide commanders with realistic training that will better prepare them for the combat environment.

“When the complexity of the environment is coupled with the operational tempo, it places great stress on our units and leaders. It’s something we can’t replicate at home station,” said Flynn. “At the CTCs, units and leaders will make mistakes, but from those mistakes, we will learn – and learning before going to combat will save lives.”

Whether injured in combat or knocked unconscious on the ďŹ eld, service members and athletes are both at risk of traumatic brain injury.

That’s why, as part of a national effort between the U.S. Army and the National Football League, or NFL, Soldiers from 7th Infantry Division and former players shared their experiences with traumatic brain injuries, or TBIs, during a roundtable discussion Nov. 20, at Virginia Mason Athletic Center, the Seattle Seahawks’ practice facility.

Pfc. Nathan Landaas, a St. Peter, Minn., native and forward observer with 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, suffered two TBIs from separate explosions in Afghanistan. He found common ground with football players, many of whom suffered their share of brain injuries on the ďŹ eld, like NFL Hall of Famer Warren Moon. “I think the long-range effects of what these brain injuries and head injuries can do to you is something we really have to be concerned about,â€? Moon said. “You just cannot allow yourself to not be smart in these situations. You need to take yourself off the ďŹ eld of battle; you need to take yourself off the ďŹ eld of play.â€?

The partnership between the Army and NFL has led to several events, including discussions at the Pentagon and U.S.

the Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. Leaders from both organizations hope these discussions will help Soldiers and players recognize the signs of TBI and encourage them to seek treatment. “It’s awesome that they are partnering up,� Landaas said about the Army and NFL. “It shows they are trying to take control of a pretty serious situation.�

Landaas added the partnership makes him optimistic about the future of TBI victims, and shows that both organizations want to improve treatment and raise awareness of the issue.

In a recent letter that announced the Army’s partnership with the NFL, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond T. Odierno and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said: “Our organizations share common traits: pride and passion, dedication and determination, and an enduring belief in the power of team. On a personal level, there is mutual respect, appreciation and admiration between soldiers and players. While the execution of our crafts is fundamentally different, these traits make America’s soldiers and NFL players who they are and the best at what they do. With this initiative, we are seeking to integrate the uncompromising devotion to win with a need to address traumatic brain injuries with the necessary care, consideration, and commitment to prevention that these injuries require.�

Annual Holiday Rooms program The Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce’s Military Affairs Council has announced the kickoff of its 27th annual Holiday Rooms Program. Applications are being accepted now through Dec. 10.

This program is great if a Langley member has guests coming over Christmas, but his or her quarters are too small to have guests. Rooms are available for the immediate families of active duty E-6 and below. Mother, father, brother, sister is considered immediate family.

The rooms are available Dec. 23-25 with checkout on Dec. 26. Rooms are assigned on a first come, first serve basis with one room.

Interested Airmen must have a duty assignment at a peninsula military installation. Required information is the active duty sponsor’s last name, first name, rank and phone number.

Provide the number of adults and children coming to visit and the guests’ smoking preference.

Note if guests have special requirements. The active-duty individual’s local zip code is also required. This will help area innkeepers match up where best to provide rooms. Lastly, the name and contact information of the individual’s supervisor should also be provided.

Holiday Card Lane Contest Army Community Service’s Mobilization Deployment Program is conducting the 14th annual Holiday Card Lane Contest. The holiday season inspires thoughts of families gathering around bountiful dinners, enjoying a wealth of delicious seasonal fare.

Unfortunately for many, these fantastic feasts are just that – a fantasy.

In the spirit of giving, Fort Eustis has teamed up with the Food Bank of the Virginia Peninsula to make these fantasies a reality. The post is conducting an installation-wide food drive, which runs through Dec. 9.

Collection boxes are located on Fort Eustis at Army Community Service, located at 650 Monroe Ave., the Exchange, Commissary, Balfour Beatty Base Housing and in several military units on the installation.

The Food Bank of the Virginia Peninsula serves the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson and Williamsburg, and the counties of Gloucester, James City, Mathews, Surry and York.

According to Donna Cloy, the ACS Army Volunteer Corps coordinator, military personnel are included in this service.

“The population targeted by the Food

Bank is those individuals at risk of losing their food security by nature of the fact that they live at 185 percent or below the poverty level,” Cloy said. “Nearly 50,000 people in our area are at risk of food insecurity, and many from outright hunger. In these hard economic times, donations have dropped, but the need has risen by 33 percent.”

Items accepted by the Food Bank include: ■ Meats, fish and protein: canned tuna, ham or chicken, beef stew, chili, peanut butter, canned or dried beans; ■ Fruits and vegetables: 100 percent fruit

juice (individual or family size), canned fruits and vegetables, instant potatoes, apple sauce, fruit cups, jelly; ■ Complete meals: pasta and sauce, boxed meals, hearty vegetable soups, canned pasta meals (pop-top lid cans, if possible); and ■ Grains: cereal, rice, breakfast bars.

“This is a great cause, and it’s our way of supporting the community that’s done so much to support us,” Cloy said. “We want to try to give as many people a happy holiday season as possible.”
