Established November of 1995, Lung Cancer Awareness Month has been used to raise awareness when it comes to quitting and the health risks that are associated with smoking.

According to the Center for Disease Control, every year 200,000 people are diagnosed and 150,000 people die from lung cancer, which is the leading cause of death and the second most common cancer among both men and women in the U.S. While smoking cigarettes is the number one cause of lung cancer it is also linked to 90 percent of all lung cancers diagnosed.

“Quitting smoking is part of looking at ones overall health. “ said Shannon Fulcrod, McDonald Army Health Center Health Center internal behavior health consultant. “There are major changes when one quits smoking.”

According to the American Lung Association, the leading cause of lung cancer can be found in the smoke from tobacco cigarettes, which contain thousands of harmful chemicals and at least 70 of which have been proven to be cancer-causing agents. These chemicals impact every organ they come in contact with.

Smoking can cause a multitude of diseases; from minor health issues like a cough to life threatening disorders such as lung cancer and heart disease.

Smoking tobacco is the largest avoidable cause of death around the globe.

There are other conventional methods that are becoming more popular when it comes to recreational smoking.

The emergence of e-cigarettes and vaping are the newest trends and have taken the smoking industry by storm.

Electronic-cigarettes are battery operated inhalers comprised of a rechargeable battery, a cartridge called a cartomizer, and a light-emitting diode on the end of the device that mirrors the end of a cigarette when smoked.

To encourage both Airmen and Soldiers to quit the use of tobacco as a New Year’s resolution, the Health and Wellness Center at Langley Air Force Base,Va., teamed up with the American Lung Association to create a program where participants may attend a one-hour seminar on smoking cessation. To promote continuing the healthy behavior they have learned, participants then call the ALA each week for 12 weeks to report progress, which is then e-mailed to the HAWC.

The idea that these electronic devices are thought to be less harmful to smokers than regular cigarettes.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, studies showed e-cig users are 5 to 15 times more likely to get formaldehyde-related cancer from vaping at high temperatures commonly referred to as “popcorn lung.” The study also indicates that vaping has not been found to be any better than smoking cigarettes.

“The most important thing you can do to lower your lung cancer risks is to quit smoking and avoid second hand smoke,” said Monica Richardson, 633rd Aerospace Medicine Squadron health promotion coordinator.

Education, Training and Research literature available at the Shellbank Fitness Center states, when considering quitting smoking, the benefits of being smoke free start immediately.

Within the first three days, your oxygen in your blood starts to increase, nerve endings start to regrow, and your lung capacity starts to increase, making your breathing easier.

“Behavioral change and health risks have a significant role when it comes to change,” said Richardson. “Asking for support, managing stress, eating well and staying active are key factors in changing your lifestyle habits,” Smoking cessation classes are a onetime enrollment and are available every other Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 1p.m. at the Shellbank Fitness Center, and every second Wednesday of the month at health management, at the MAHC from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

With proper coordination for one-onone sessions are also available to accommodate members’ work schedules.

FACILITY UPDATE FOR ACC FITNESS CENTER

Beginning early December, the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron is scheduled to start renovations at the Air Combat Command’s fitness center.

The renovations are estimated to last one year, but may be longer due to unforeseen delays. Work hours are from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. “It is no secret the ACC fitness center is in much need of a facility update. We have been partnering with the 633rd CES to ensure we can bring these renovations to fruition,� said U.S. Air Force Capt. Travares Dozier, 633rd Force Support Squadron Sustainment Services flight commander. “The renovations will go a long way in improving the overall health and quality of the facility. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through the renovation phasing periods.

We will keep the lines of communication open and provide updates on progress along the way.�

Areas to be renovated include: fire suppression and alarm systems, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, all locker rooms and minimal building structural work.

Customers are reminded to be cautious and mindful of signs and know where the restricted and unrestricted areas are located.

There will be days the electrical and plumbing could be interrupted, however notices will go out beforehand.

Crew chiefs, avionics, NDI-oh my; maintainers receive advanced training at JBLE

Throughout the year, more than 370 maintainers from eight different Air Force Specialty Codes attend advanced training courses at the 372nd Training Squadron, Detachment 18 at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia.

The classes have no more than two students per course and are taught by 15 different subject matter experts in their respective career fields.

“We have small classrooms so the students can get focused, attentive training,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Corey Hayes, 372nd TRS, Det. 18 F-22 Raptor non-destructive inspection instructor. “It increases their proficiency level, making sure people understand the stuff we are telling them.”

The courses are part of a major command level training plan to advance the level of knowledge the students have and help them become more motivated with more knowledge of the field.

During the two-day to 30-day long courses, the students, who are mainly 5-level individuals learn more than just advanced skills in their field.

“We go through warrior ethos, or Air Force history, things that give you reverence to being an American Airman and the mentorship they might not get during the typical day-to-day,” said Hayes. “These things will be useful in their career as they put in more years in the Air Force and enables them to pass it on to the next person.”

Students will get classroom time with their instructors, going in-depth into the information they will need to repair, examine or report on their aircraft. After the classroom time, they will get hands-on experience with training equipment as well as some active aircraft.

Hayes feels the training equipment the school has is an effective way to train as it mimics the real environment. The training equipment includes a life-size, inactive F-22 Raptor, an egress trainer and several other items.

Once the class progresses to the hands-

on portion of the training, instructors will give the students a task to complete while they oversee the process.

“The students have a portable maintenance aide they use during each task,” said Staff Sgt. Oscar Bruck 372nd TRS, Det. 18 F-22 Raptor tactical aircraft maintenance specialist instructor. “The aide gives them a step-by-step on what to do on the aircraft, as well as allows them to log their work.”

The portable maintenance aide used during the course is the same one the maintainer will use on the flightline during real-world working.

Hayes says that training people properly, teaching them why they do what they do and providing motivation is their main priority within the TRS. “Sometimes on the flightline, you can get to the point where it can become mundane, doing the same thing day in day out,” said Hayes. “While here, they can see the why behind what they do--see that they are not only supporting the aircraft, but there is a person flying the aircraft.”

Aviation history: Every tail tells a story

Joint Base Langley-Eustis community members quickly learn to identify and distinguish the two types of aircraft currently flying here, the F-22 Raptor and the T-38 Talon. More perceptive fans of military aviation, like myself may also identify the B-52 Stratofortress and F-4 Phantom near the LaSalle Gate, the F-15 Eagle that overlooks the Armistead Gate or the mix of fighter aircraft that adorn Heritage Park.

If you can tell an F-105 Thunderchief from an F-16 Fighting Falcon, I would call you a keen-eyed observer.

But every non-transport aircraft in the U.S. Air Force inventory features both a distinct 2-letter identification and a serial number on its tail. Those letter and number combinations tell a story to those who know how to read it.

The two-letter code on an aircraft tail is officially referred to as the “Distinctive Unit Identifier Marking” but I know it sounds better as the fin flash. The fin flash is an easy way to instantly identify an aircraft’s home.

For example, an F-16 with “SP” on the tail immediately links that jet to Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany while an “SW” denotes an F-16 from Shaw Air Force

Base, South Carolina.

Tail letters often correspond to the name of the base, but not always. State-based letters are also common. Vermont Air National Guard F-16s identifies with “VT” and aircraft assigned to both Eielson and Elmendorf AFBs in Alaska feature “AK”.

While the names of states, bases, or cities provide the origin of most fin flashes, others, including “FF” here at JBLE are based on a nickname or mission. The 1st Fighter Wing is “First of the First”. The 8th FW “Wolfpack” at Kunsan AB, South Korea displays “WP”. The 35th FW from Misawa AB, Japan wears “WW” to denote its “Wild Weasel” mission.

The 100th Air Refueling Wing at Royal Air Force Mildenhall, England uses the only official single letter designator, a simple square “D” which commemorates the World War II era 100th Bombardment Group that used the same tail marking.

Although 101 different letter combinations remain in use, many are no longer employed. For example the “AJ” on the F-4 by the LaSalle Gate was used during the Vietnam War by the 366th Tactical Fighter Wing , but is no longer in use today.

The serial number on an aircraft’s tail is unique. The first two numbers designate the year that the aircraft

was ordered and the following numbers identify that aircraft’s specific position among all the aircraft from that year.

For example the serial number of Langley’s B-52 is 59601 and its F-105 displays 61217. These serial numbers indicate they were bought in 1959 and 1961 respectively.

The oldest jet actively flying here at Langley is a T-38 with serial number 60582. That’s right, it was purchased in 1960.

That’s the story of the fin flash and tail numbers on every jet. Now you can decipher their meaning and read a little more of any fighter jet’s history for yourself.

2016 Federal benefits season opens Federal civilian appropriated fund employees will have the opportunity to think about their benefit elections this year from Nov. 14 through Dec. 12, 2016 during the annual Federal Benefits Open Season. The open season covers federal employee benefit elections under the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) program, the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP), and the Federal Flexible Spending Accounts Program (FSAFEDS). Eligible federal civilian employees can enroll in or make changes to their health, dental, and vision insurance coverage for 2017; and decide whether contributing to a health and/or dependent care flexible spending account will save them money by using pre-tax contributions to pay out-ofpocket costs. Selection of electronic delivery for 2016 IRS Form 1095-C for military members must be completed by Dec. 31, 2016 to avoid forms being mailed via the U.S. Postal System. Electronic delivery helps protect personal information, saves money and natural resources. The myPay pay management system allows military members to monitor their pay and direct delivery options of important documents such as W-2s, Leave and Earning Statements and the relatively new 1095-C healthcare coverage certification. The deadline to make an electronic delivery-only selection for W-2 forms is Dec. 1, 2016. IRS Form 1095 delivery selection must be made no later than Dec. 31, 2016. The DFAS tax statement release schedule will be released in late November and will be posted on the agency’s website at www.dfas.mil.
