Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III has named Chief Master Sgt. James A. Cody to serve as the 17th chief master sergeant of the Air Force.

Cody will assume his new position on Feb. 1, following the Jan. 31 retirement of current Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James Roy. Roy’s retirement will culminate more than 30 years of service to the Air Force.

“Chief Roy and his wife, Paula, have been a blessing for our Air Force. They have worked tirelessly for the past threeplus years as phenomenal advocates for our Airmen and families. Betty and I wish them all the best as they prepare for the next chapter in their lives,” Welsh said.

“The quality and professionalism of our enlisted force is unrivaled due in great part to the remarkable commitment and dedication of Chief Roy and Paula to take care of Airmen and their families,” said Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley. “The Air Force must continue to develop the quality Airmen the service needs and we look forward to the experience that Chief Cody and

We moved tactically toward a riverbed and headed south along the river. As we came to a village, scores of inhabitants – men, women and children – mounted motorcycles and donkeys, and quickly headed out of town.

That’s never a good sign.

Upon seeing that, Castello decided it would be best to hold up on the riverbed for a while and observe the village. Moments later, we were attacked with accurate small-arms fire from our flank.

Lewis was the first to respond and began laying down suppressive fire. He called some of us up on a firing line, while others kept watch across the river into the village and to the fields due north.

Cody, who joined the Air Force in 1984, is currently the command chief master sergeant for Air Education and Training Command. His career includes various assignments in air traffic control and as the command chief master sergeant, 15th Expeditionary Mobility Task Force, Travis Air Force Base, Calif.; 6th Air Mobility Wing, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.; and 18th Air Force, Scott Air Force Base, Ill.

“We are excited to welcome Chief Cody and Athena to the team as they take the baton from the Roys,” Welsh said. “The next few years will be filled with many opportunities and challenges and our Air Force will greatly benefit from the leadership, experience and wisdom they bring.”

The office of the chief master sergeant of the Air Force represents the highest enlisted level of leadership, provides direction for the enlisted corps and represents their interests to the American public and all levels of government. The CMSAF serves as a personal advisor to the Air Force Chief of Staff and Secretary of the Air Force on all issues regarding the welfare, readiness, proper utilization, and progress of the enlisted force and their families.

Airman Jose Cruz-Richardson, called back to Bulldog Troop and requested close-air support. He had Air Force fighters in the air but they were engaged elsewhere so our request was denied.

Without having the Air Force overhead, Castello needed to re-evaluate his plan.

After a quick discussion with Lewis and another scout, Sgt. Jonathan Sweetman, the lieutenant decided we would bound forward toward the direction from which we received fire, and continue to recon the fields and riverbed.

They divided us into three teams and we pushed forward. No one ever second guessed the lieutenant’s decision. Likewise, we all trusted Lewis and Sweetman intimately.

We made a great deal of headway, and gathered intelligence from the battle space the whole way forward.

After the long patrol, we were visibly tired and soaked in sweat. We continued to move tactfully back to the COP, stopping by to talk to some village elders along the way.

The relationship White Platoon had with the elders is such that if someone new arrived in the area, the elders would alert Castello to their presence.

As we walked back, Lewis noticed a new face and thinking quickly, stopped the man. Meanwhile, Castello summoned an elder, who introduced the new gentleman and explained that his family had just returned to the village.

Under the terrorizing hands of the Taliban and other insurgents, many villagers fled the valley we operated in, and resorted to living in the mountains, without a river or valley to grow crops in.

I’ve seen those mountains and assure you they were no place to live. They were cold, infested with insurgents, and offered no fertile land or livable mesas.

To live in those mountains, one would literally have to live in a cave, or build a mud hut on the steep mountainsides.

During their tenure in the valley, Bulldog Troop worked hard to return villagers to their homes.

That fight alongside the riverbed

wasn’t the last I saw during my deployment. However, during every mission, I always trusted my leaders and even took the time to mentor junior Soldiers dozens of times.

It’s true, leadership and the military are inseparable.

As military members, we need to continue to put the service of our nation before ourselves, grow as leaders and managers, and instill discipline in our ranks.

Though some may not see the need to do so off the battlefield, I assure you by what I saw in combat, cultivating discipline before the fight is essential.

Like most, I sometimes reflect on myself as an NCO. I put myself in check to make sure I’m living up to the legacies of the leaders who served before me.

Self-reflection is normal and healthy.

Still, when in the presence of subordinates, we must always remain strong.

We owe our Services strong leadership and someday, a Service member’s life may depend on decisions you make and the example you are setting today.

Some people joined the Air Force with little-to-no interaction with the military.

Others might have been children of Service members who had some experience with the military through their parents.

But in some cases, spouses of military members decide to take their silent service to the next level.

Airman 1st Class Michelle Garrett, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron emergency management apprentice, came to that conclusion after almost three years as a spouse.

“It’s not easy to be a military spouse,” said Garrett. “There are a lot of things, as a civilian, I didn’t really understand – when it came to my husband’s job.”

As a spouse, Garrett often missed out on her husband’s events when they occurred at odd hours and he sometimes had to leave her during gatherings at her office if he was on call. At the time, Garrett didn’t understand why he always had to work.

“I would be upset that he couldn’t make the change,” said Garrett. “But now I see that it was a sacrifice to miss out on those occasions, not the other way around.”

In addition to his absence, Garrett struggled being so far away from her family in Florida while she and her husband were stationed in Hawaii. She said that it requires a lot of strength to be a military spouse.

“If I had to tell myself back then what it would be like to be a spouse, I would let her know she needs to be strong,” said Garrett.

“I would say she needs to understand how and why she will always move around and make other similar sacrifices.”

The life of a spouse isn’t one of only sacrifice, however. Garrett found respite knowing that there would always be food on the table for her while she pursued her own goals.

“If I lost my job at the bank, I knew I would still be alright,” said Garrett. “After working two jobs and going to college back home, it gave me a real peace of mind.”

Unfortunately for Garrett, her educational grants did not follow her to Hawaii, and her husband was not eligible to share his Post 9/11 G.I. Bill benefits yet.

At that point, Garrett decided to join the Air Force.

year, Garrett has seen the Air Force from both sides of the “I do”.

“I like what the Air Force gave me when I enlisted,” said Garrett. “Now I understand what really happened while I was a spouse.”

Garrett said the role of a spouse is one of support and understanding. The spouse has to understand that there will be hardships when your significant other doesn’t work an average “nine-to-five” job. Sometimes, the Service member doesn’t have a choice on the work schedule, and sacrifices are required.

That being said, Garrett spoke about the role of the Service member in the relationship. She said it is important for the Service member to recognize what the spouse has to go through. The appreciation to the spouse can make all the difference during a hardship.

“Now that I see both sides of the relationship, I hope other people can strengthen their relationship and continue to hold each other up,” she said.

Civil Support, headquartered at Fort Eustis, Va., to serve as the JFLCC Coordinating Element at Joint Base McGuireDix-Lakehurst, N.J. The JCE’s mission is to coordinate for military units conducting missions in affected regions of the Eastern seaboard.

For the past week, JTF-CS has coordinated a variety of federal military support to aid relief efforts, including 80 strategic airlift missions conducted by the Air Mobility Command, 600 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers personnel currently pumping 11 tunnels and waste water treatment plants in both New York and New Jersey and more than 2 million meals delivered by the Defense Logistics Agency.

The JCE also supports the Federal Emergency Management Agency and state and local responders by planning, requesting and overseeing the actions of federal military units that will deliver critical capabilities, equipment and supplies throughout the response.

For the first time in the command’s 13year history, Joint Task Force Civil Support deployed all of their personnel in a defense support of civil authorities response operation after Hurricane Sandy ravaged parts of New York and New Jersey last week.

The massive storm slammed into the East Coast, killing at least 106 people in the United States and caused widespread power outages, flooding and gas shortages. It will turn out to be one of the costliest and most devastating storms to strike the United States, causing about $20 billion in property damages and $10 billion to $30 billion more in lost business, according to IHS Global Insight, a forecasting firm.

the right type of support to these folks,” said U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Jeff W. Mathis III, commander, JFLCC Coordination Element and JTF-CS, during a talk with his staff recently. “There’s still a significant amount of work that needs to be done.”

JTF-CS, headquartered at Joint Base Langley Eustis, Va., was assigned this mission because of the unit’s proximity to the affected region and its “rapid readiness to respond,” according to JTFCS officials.

The key to disaster response is timesaving planning and coordination, anticipation of what support federal, state and local responders need to help save lives and return a sense of normalcy to those impacted, according to JTF-CS officials.

This is not the first time that JTF-CS has responded to a natural disaster. The command deployed a 54-person team to Fort Bragg, N.C. in Sept. 2011 as part of the federal response to Hurricane Irene, which wrought flooding and damage throughout the U.S. eastern seaboard.

The major difference between the two responses is nearly every single member of almost 200-person command deployed to a forward location during response operations to New Jersey’s eastern shore.

Within 72 hours notification from higher headquarters, JTF-CS had nearly all of its personnel and almost every piece of their equipment on the road or in the air bound for N.J. Some personnel drove, loading up into convoys of pickup trucks along loaded with communication equipment, supplies and luggage. Others from JTF-CS flew in two days later on Marine Corps’ KC-130 Hercules aircraft.

Last year’s Hurricane Irene support to North Carolina included command and control of two helicopters from the U.S. Army’s Fort Stewart, Ga.-based Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, providing aerial transportation to nine representatives from both state response managers and FEMA. Unless approved for special leave accrual, active-duty and Active Guard Reserve members who have more than 60 days of leave must use it or lose it by Oct. 1, 2013, when the temporary leave carryover extension provision expires, Air Force Personnel Center officials said today.

Some reserve members will be affected as well, said Lt. Col. Belinda Petersen, Air Reserve Personnel Center public affairs.

“Although traditional Air Reserve Component and active-duty personnel programs differ slightly, AGR members accrue leave the same way active-duty members do, so the extension expiration will affect them,” Petersen said. “Some people may not be aware of the difference between traditional Reserve and AGR, so if you’re affected, it’s a good idea to make sure your supervisor and coworkers are aware.”

Excepted from the use-or-lose rule are those with approved special leave accrual.

“SLA approval is for members who couldn’t use their leave because of national emergency, crisis, catastrophe, or national security situations,” said Cressione. “SLA isn’t granted when Airmen choose not to take leave under those conditions, but when they are unable to do so.”

Airmen who have been approved for SLA, depending on their location and situation, could be authorized to carry as much as 120 days for as long as four years.

HURRICANE FROM PAGE 5 “Hurricane Irene provided us a great learning opportunity which helped significantly in preparing for Sandy,” said David Lamphere, 305th Aerial Port Squadron terminal manager. “We were able to respond expediently and efficiently with a familiarity based on last year’s efforts and a vigilant training and exercise program, as well.”

Meanwhile, more than 7,600 National Guardsmen from across 14 states have provided sustained support to impacted regions. Guardsmen have rescued more than 2,000 people from flood zones, delivered 144,000 meals and provided cargo plane transportation for first responders to restore power and provide critical supplies.

Not all of the important work is being done outside in the damaged environment that Hurricane Sandy has left behind. One very crucial part of JTFCS’ support to civil authorities’ mission is done by seven people that are huddled around laptop computers in a small office working around the clock in 12-hour shifts. They are keeping track of all of the active duty military personnel from all of the units that are coming in and out of the region.

“Being here, we contribute in a different way,” said Staff Sgt. Elsie Muniz, human resources noncommissioned officer, JCE. “We ensure people are accounted for and that we have the right amount of people to do the job. These relief

operations are fully underway; we’re reassuring the people that we’re here to help them, and we’re here to ensure this is getting done.”

The Houston native said helping people is why she joined the Army.

“I love what I do; I love helping people,” said Muniz. “As an NCO in the Army, there’s nothing better.”

As recovery operations continue, the communities affected have started their journey back to normalcy – most of the tunnels are open, the subways have returned to normal operation and more than 80 percent of homes and businesses have power. For as long as help is needed, more than 1,800 active duty military personnel that have been working around the clock will be here.

“Most Airmen won’t be able to carry that much excess leave for that long,” he said. “Airmen on active duty who are entitled to hostile fire and imminent danger pay are generally authorized to carry excess leave, but it isn’t automatic, they have to request it.”

For SLA approval, Airmen must submit a request to the unit commander. Deployed members must identify themselves to the Personnel Support for Contingency Operations team, and the PERSCO team will notify their home station military personnel section for action.

“If you don’t have approved SLA, you can only carry 60 days into the next fiscal year, though,” Cressione said. “So don’t wait until the last minute to plan your leave.”

Trevor Romain, an author and counselor specializing in children’s care, speaks in Norfolk, Nov. 1, regarding his experience with children who lost loved ones. His experiences gave caretakers and educators an idea of what they might see from children with similar stories.

With the concept of total education in mind, Joint Base Langley-Eustis school liaison officials, the Joint Military Service School Liaison Committee and Old Dominion University hosted an education summit in Norfolk, Nov. 1. The summit’s purpose was to bring together parents, Service members, educators and others who devote themselves to the mission of higher education.

For many individuals, knowledge constitutes only a small part of a complete education; people, communication and innovation merge to create a total educational experience.

With the concept of total education in mind, Joint Base Langley-Eustis school liaison officials, the Joint Military Service School Liaison Committee and Old Dominion University hosted an education summit at Norfolk, Va., Nov. 1.

The summit’s purpose was to bring together parents, Service members, educators and others who devote themselves to the mission of higher education.

Bianca Martinez, a local news anchor and Navy spouse, wanted to use her public speaking prowess and experience as a military spouse to expose others to the world of education, no matter the circumstances of the parents, children or educators. “[This summit] allows communication between educators and the military,” said Martinez. “Communication is essential in a dynamic, military lifestyle.”

After an initial briefing of events, summit leaders broke off into separate groups. These groups held in-depth discussions on three topics: resilience, special education and transitioning from base to base.

The briefings gave educators a preview into the lives of students with military parents. It taught them how to handle a child with a deployed parent, and what they could do for the child. It also gave parents information on how to ease the stress of a transition. Parents with special-needs children learned the ins-and-outs of how they can best treat their child in the Hampton Roads area.

“The summit brought the public school community together with parents concerned about present-and-future educational issues in the Hampton Roads area,” said Wiker.

JBLE organizations were paramount in connecting parents to the educational community and they also presented resources to the parents, which helped parents network with off-base outreach organizations.

“There have been other education summits on other military installations,” said Wiker.

“This summit, however, was the first of this magnitude, and the first to partner with an outside university-using resources off-base.”

Those resources were not exclusive to pamphlets and slideshows.

Speakers and educators came out to share their experiences and wisdom to give parents a first-hand look into the power of a complete education.

Due to such positive feedback, Wiker hopes to make the summit an annual event.

On the issue of resiliency, Trevor Romain, an author and counselor specializing in children’s care, believes

that all children and their teachers can work together to combat the challenges presented in a military home.

Romain spoke about the importance of understanding a child, as well as the understanding of self required to be a better educator.

Caretakers and educators were not the only audience in the summit; military members sat in on every briefing to learn about what educational opportunities existed for their families.

From the standpoint of a Service member, U.S. Army Lt. Col Jamie Efaw, Fort Story Army support activities commander, found the information offered enlightening.

“My fifth-grader will be going to public school for the first time this year, since he has been homeschooled in the past,” said Efaw. “This opportunity helped people like me relate to, and learn from, others’ experiences.”

Civilian employees’ supervisors will now get automatic email reminders 45 and 20 days before personnel actions are due to help prevent adverse impact on civilian pay and records, Air Force Personnel Center ofďŹ cials said.

Automatic notiďŹ cations will go out for various actions, including when a supervisor must certify a step increase, complete an appraisal for a step increase or certify a career promotion. Supervisors and second line supervisors will also be notiďŹ ed when temporary or limited appointments or temporary promotions are near expiration. “Supervisors may not be aware that an action is due, or an immediate supervisor position may be vacant, so email notiďŹ cations will also go to second line supervisors to help prevent problems that occur because of late personnel actions,â€? said

Civilian Personnel Sections have access to nightly generated notices and weekly suspense action reports that they use to manage workow, as well as ensure requests for personnel action submissions are timely, Askins explained.

That won’t change. Even after the new

process is implemented, those weekly reports and nightly notices will continue. The new process just involves supervisors earlier, so they will be better prepared to take actions when they are due, Askins said. “Supervisors have actions they must take in each case and if they delay, they may ďŹ nd themselves unable to retain an employee, and employees may ďŹ nd themselves out of work or being paid erroneously,â€? she said. “The automatic notiďŹ cation not only reminds them that an

action is due, but gives them direction on how to accomplish the task.�

NotiďŹ cations will be sent to those people identiďŹ ed as ďŹ rst or second level supervisors, based on the Defense Civilian Personnel Data System Position Hierarchy Tool. “If there isn’t a ďŹ rst or second level supervisor identiďŹ ed with a valid email address in DCPDS, a notiďŹ cation won’t be generated. Maintaining the Position Hierarchy Tool is vital to support current and future Air Force initiatives, and it is imperative that DCPDS accurately reects supervisory data,â€? said Askins.

Supervisors can now view actions due in the suspense folder in MyWorkplace, accessible via the myPers website and the Air Force Portal.

What rank in the U.S. Air Force is reserved for one who is an authority, a teacher, a mentor, and a leader? Langley Air Force Base, Va., recently celebrated the selection of 22 new chief master sergeants during a promotion-release ceremony held at the Langley Club, Nov. 8.

Chief master sergeants were not part of the Air Force’s original enlisted structure in 1947, when the service was formed. It took 11 years before the rank was created.

Throughout their history, chiefs have been guided by a creed that not only outlines their careers, but also their lives.

■ Chief Master Sergeants are to be regarded individually as people “I think it is an honor in the first place to be selected as a chief because only 1 percent make chief,” said Chief Master Sgt. Valeria Richardson, 633rd Inpatient Operation Squadron superintendent.

As individuals who have achieved the highest enlisted rank, with the exception of chief master sergeant of the Air Force, they serve as vital leaders in the Air Force structure. They have also developed strong ties with other service members, through a lifetime of devotion to their country.

“It was nice to return to work and see my e-mail flooded with ‘thanks’,” said Senior Master Sgt. Raul Villarreal Jr., Headquarters Air Combat Command avionics man-

ager of the F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon. “That tells me that there are people, even that I used to supervise, that still remember, and that means a lot to me.”

■ Who will not lose their individuality in a crowd “As long as you can look yourself in the mirror every day and know that you tried to move forward, that’s a good thing,” said Vilarreal. “I just want to do the best that I can every day.”

Both Richardson and Vilarreal said they did not become chief master sergeants alone, but with the help of peers, supervisors and especially family who pushed them to go above and beyond what was required.

“I see my role as grooming and giving back to the junior Airmen, so they can take my place,” said Richardson.

■ Who do not hesitate to take chances

“Lead from the front. It’s that simple,” said Villarreal. “The expectation is not for you to be better than other people, but to be visible.”

According to Richardson, that visibility can begin on the first day an individual enters the Air Force.

“From day one of your career, go out there and seek leadership, get involved, find stuff you like, and don’t be afraid to step out in the leadership role,” said Richardson.

Onlookers were fixated as paramedics strapped the young man to a stretcher, his head in a neck brace. As his vitals began to drop, the technicians tried to stabilize his blood pressure by inserting an IV. Only a few hours before the IV needle broke his skin, he had been laughing and dancing with friends. He was on leave for the holidays, and his friends threw him a welcome-home party. After a few drinks, he decided to drive to another friend’s house – no one stopped him. No one took his keys.

While driving, he read a text message and crossed over the center line. He drove head-on into a car at 45 miles per hour.

As a result of the crash, the young man suffered numerous broken bones, internal bleeding and a spinal injury that left him paralyzed from the neck-down, leaving him to live the

rest of his life as a quadriplegic.

This tragic accident was a scene presented by Vince Easevoli and Ronny Garcia, paramedics of the Street Smart program, during one of several safety briefings at both the Jacobs Theater on Fort Eustis, Va., Nov. 7, and the base theater at Langley Air Force Base, Va., Nov. 8. The Street Smart program covered a range of driving-related subjects including seatbelt usage, driver distractions, driving under the influence and driving recklessly, and reached more than 1,450 Service members during performances at both locations.

“In fiscal years 2011 and 2012, vehicle incidents claimed the lives of more Service members than battlefield injuries,” said “Safety Bob” Longworth, the Joint Base Langley-Eustis Chief of Safety.

For first-time attendee Tech. Sgt. Kimberly Young, 633rd Air Base Wing Safety noncommissioned officer in charge, the Street Smart performance was an eye-opening experience.

“I’ve seen several different defensive driv-

ing shows, and I’m also a defensive driving instructor, but to see people who do this in real-life, it was amazing,” said Young. “It really hits home. It’s really not just statistics, it’s what they’ve actually seen and done.”

As part of the presentation, Easevoli and Garcia asked an audience member on stage to participate in a car accident scenario, which included being strapped to a stretcher and put in a neck brace as they explained the step-by-step procedures first responders do after a crash.

For Senior Airman Braxton Ward, 480th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing knowledge operations specialist, his experience on stage during the scenario was hard-hitting and effective.

“It’s very informative, very straightforward and blunt so you get the big picture of why they do this presentation,” said Ward. “We don’t think about how simple things can make a lifetime change – it’s not worth not wearing a seatbelt.”

For Easevoil, 27 years of experiencce as a firefighter and paramedic led him to fi find a way to educate people on the consequencces of poor driving decisions. In 1988, he foun nded Stay Alive From Education, or S.A.F.E., w which presents the Street Smart program.

“Our approach is different. It sho ows if you make poor choices, this is what happens,” said Easevoli. “Most people don’t h have a clue what happens to them in a crash, orr what we, as paramedics, do to them.”

As part of the Street Smart team, Garcia has been a firefighter and paramedic wiith Tampa, Fl. Fire Rescue for 28 years. He has beeen a Street Smart presenter since 1999, and hop pes that his role in the program will help save liv ves.

“With this many years of experiience, you strive to make a difference in the strreets,” said Garcia. “You hope to make people think differently in the choices they make. If I can leave here with a sense of ‘Wow, we may have h saved a life,’ that’s why I love doing it.”

By Claire Heininger As Soldiers ready for deployment with the Army’s new tactical communications network, the Network Integration Evaluations that shaped that capability are now aiming to take it to the next level.

After less than two years of Soldier-driven evaluation and integration through the Network Integration Evaluations, or NIEs, two brigades of the 10th Mountain Division are now training on Capability Set 13 – the Army’s first fully-integrated package of radios, satellite systems, software applications, smartphone-like devices and other network components that connects Soldiers and leaders at all levels of the brigade combat team, BCT. At the same time, the fourth NIE event is taking place this month, driving technology improvements that can be incorporated with the next capability set.

“We were able to use the NIE to define a greater capability for Soldiers that are going into combat. At the end of the day, that’s going to save Soldiers’ lives,” said Lt. Gen. Bill Phillips, military deputy to the Assis-

Launched in June 2011, the NIEs are semi-annual field exercises designed to quickly integrate and mature the Army’s tactical communications network, the service’s top modernization priority. NIE 13.1 runs through Nov. 17 and involves the 3,800 Soldiers of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, who are conducting rigorous mission scenarios in a realistic environment at Fort Bliss, Texas, and White Sands Missile Range, N.M., in order to evaluate the operational value of various systems developed by the Army and by the private sector.

“What I’ve seen as a result of coming out here today is how agile and adaptive our Soldiers are,” McQuistion said. “They can take these systems, make sense of them and see how to use them for the best capability.”

A major focus of this NIE is to assess network capability at the lowest echelons – how platoons, squads, teams and dismounted Soldiers can pass information to make better decisions, said Col. Thomas Dorame, 2/1 AD commander.

The NIEs produce Soldier feedback to inform the Army on what systems should be procured, and serve to ensure that the systems work together as an integrated communications package for the BCT. Just as important, NIEs have aided the Army in developing Tactics, Techniques and Procedures, known as TTPs, for how to ďŹ eld, train, operate, maintain and sustain network capabilities.

These TTPs and other lessons learned from the NIEs are being applied as the Army rolls out Capability Set 13.

Soldiers from the 10th Mountain Divisionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 3rd BCT at Fort Drum, N.Y., and 4th BCT at Fort Polk, La., were the ďŹ rst to receive Capability Set 13, which began ďŹ elding in October 2012. The 4th BCT, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colo., will be the next to get the new gear starting early in 2013.

The new network will arrive in Afghanistan as U.S. forces continue to retrograde, turning over many of their Forward Operating Bases and other infrastructure to the local forces and thus gradually losing ďŹ xed network locations. Capability Set 13 systems provide mobile satellite and robust radio capability for commanders and Soldiers to take the network with them in vehicles and while dismounted as they conduct security assistance and some combat missions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The capabilities that this brings will enable them to reach out farther from those base camps that are in a static environment,â&#x20AC;? said Maj. Ernest Tornabell, brigade S6 for 2/1 AD. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As we do the drawdown and we continue to work on our training with the Afghan National Army, the Afghan Border Patrol and other agencies, we will be able to maintain a state of communications with our higher headquarters with data and voice â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which is really what youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking for to maintain situational awareness.â&#x20AC;?

As the Army continues to re-balance its resources from the Middle East to other areas including the Asia-PaciďŹ c region, the NIE can be used to evaluate technologies that meet potential new requirements and capability gaps, McQuistion said. NIEs will also continue to evolve with greater involvement of non-network capabilities, participation by joint and coalition partners, and the integration of communications gear onto Stryker and heavy platforms.

I felt anxious walking into the Health and Wellness Center, as I prepared to taste what I expected to be some rather unappetizing food. As a child, I always associated “healthy” with “bland” and “boring”. When I grew up, I refused to buy anything that said “low fat” or “fat-free” on the label.

Imagine my surprise as I walked into the Healthy Eating class attached to the kitchen and smelled the familiar tartness of cranberries. Tracy Conder, registered dietician and class instructor, welcomed me with a big smile. She had already started cooking and there were several people sitting, flipping through hand-outs filled with holiday recipes and tips.

“Americans gain on average between seven and ten pounds during the holiday season,” said Conder. “I want to provide some strategies to avoid that; things like recipe substitutions to cut fat and calories, and tips to survive when eating at relatives’ and friends’ homes.”

Conder began by making a cranberry-pear sauce. Instead of using the typical cranberry sauce that still bears the shape of the can it came from, Conder made the sauce from scratch. As she cut the pears and blended them with cherries and cranberries, she discussed a few healthy tips for visiting friends and family during the holidays.

■ Be realistic. Don’t try to lose weight during the holidays. Instead, try to maintain a healthy weight.

■ Plan time for exercise. People tend to travel more during the holidays, so there isn’t always time to

keep a consistent work-out plan. Every little bit counts. Make a few extra trips around the grocery store when shopping for gifts and park a little further out in the parking lot.

■ If you know a host is going to have a lot of high-fat foods, don’t skip a meal. Eat a healthy snack before arriving at their home. You will be less tempted to over-indulge.

■ Bring your own healthy dish to a holiday gathering. It will allow you to eat healthier and encourage others to do the same.

When the colorful cranberry pear sauce was finished, the smell filled the HAWC in no time. My stomach began to grumble. I’ve never been a fan of cherries or pears, but the smell was intoxicating and I couldn’t wait to try it.

tered. Conder began making an edamame-avocado dip, and a pomegranate-citrus juice.

“If we put a little extra effort into our food choices, and change it up a little bit, we can survive the holidays.” said Conder. “We can put the focus back on friends, family and fellowship.”

Finally, the macaroni and cheese came out of the oven and the gingerbread had cooled. The macaroni and cheese looked like the typical family recipe – lots of macaroni, and lots of cheese. But Grandma’s mac and cheese couldn’t compare to this dish.

It tasted so good that I struggled to find the healthy twist that made it different from the usual. There’s no difference in color, texture or smell from Grandma’s recipe. So what was it? Butternut squash.

Heart Link orientation: ‘Air Force 101’ for spouses

PCS, NCOIC, AFI and LES. Whether a person is a new U.S. Air Force spouse, about to become one, or has been a spouse for 20 years, these acronyms may be a mystery. But with a little help from the Airmen and Family Readiness Center, spouses can decode the military lingo and better understand their role in the Air Force family.

The AFRC hosted Heart Link, Nov. 9, an orientation designed to introduce spouses to the base and local community, while working to create missionready spouses.

“We consider Heart Link to be the Air Force 101 course for military spouses,” said Robyn Wilson, AFRC outreach readiness consultant. “It’s a great opportunity to network and become familiar with key resources on and off base.”

The course is generally geared toward spouses who are new to the military, but all spouses are welcome. The event gives new spouses the chance to

meet and learn from “seasoned” spouses, who have been married to a military member longer and are used to the military lifestyle.

Col. Korvin Auch, 633rd Air Base Wing commander, and his wife, Kristin, spoke to the group about their role in the military in support of the operational mission. Spouses were also briefed on a variety of subjects, such as protocol, customer service and finance.

“Ultimately, we want to empower these spouses,” said Wilson, “We want them to feel more confident in their role so they can be better wingmen to their spouses and so they feel good about what they contribute to the Air Force as a whole.”

Lea Nerby was among those in attendance. Nerby has been at Langley Air Force Base with her husband, Master Sgt Nathan Nerby, 158th Fighter Wing, an Air National Guard unit from Vermont, for ten years. She attended Heart Link to gain more information to become a better key spouse for her husband’s unit.

Celebration in Lights The 20th annual Celebration in Lights will take place Nov. 22 through New Year’s Day at Newport News Park (intersection of Fort Eustis Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue).

This drive-thru holiday event uses more than 800,000 individual lights to transform the park into animated holiday and fanciful scenes. Each Friday night, the first 500 vehicles will receive a promotional give-a-way gift.

Studio Artists Holiday Open House The studio artists at the Hermitage Museum and Gardens will host a Holiday Open House on Dec. 1 from 3 to 6 p.m. at 7637 North Shore Rd., Norfolk. Hampton Holly Days Parade The 2012 Hampton Holly Days Parade is scheduled for Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. in downtown Hampton. This year’s theme is “Babes in Toyland.” Admission is free.

“Butternut squash has just enough flavor to add to the macaroni and cheese, but not over power it,” said Conder. “It allows you to cut back on the amount of cheese in the dish, which cuts back on the calories and fat.”

Staff Sgt Waylon Hobbs, Headquarters Air Combat Command noncommissioned officer of resource management, couldn’t wait to go home and try some of the recipes.

“I have family members with health issues so I came looking for some healthy ways to prepare food while still keeping it flavorful,” said Hobbs. “I can’t wait to go home and start experimenting with some of these recipes for my family.”

I made sure to grab some macaroni and cheese and gingerbread to take home before I left. As I walked out, I continued to flip through my new list of healthy holiday recipes and substitutions, excited to try them this year.

As the girl who used to turn her nose up to healthy food, I am now looking forward to making homemade cranberry sauce filled with a variety of fruit, and macaroni and cheese with butternut squash.

“I wish I would have known some of this stuff ten years ago when we first came to Langley,” Nerby said. “As a key spouse, my job is to be there for spouses when the military member is away. I help ensure individual and family readiness so I came to Heart Link to find out as many sources as I can to help the other spouses within my husband’s unit.”

Spouses also learned key financial information, such as how to read the military member’s Leave and Earnings Statement. This information can be very helpful for those managing finances while the military member is deployed.

“For ten years I’ve looked at my husband’s LES but never understood what any of it meant,” Nerby said. “Now I know what it all means and I can have a temporary pin to view his LES during tax season. I am able to file our taxes if he’s deployed and give him one less thing to worry about.”

The AFRC hosts Heart Link quarterly and welcomes all spouses. Childcare is offered on a space available basis.

Spouses can call the AFRC at 757-764-3990 to register. The AFRC is available for all active duty members and their families, Department of Defense civilians, contractors and retirees.
