LANGLEY CHAPEL THEN, 82 YEARS LATER Construction for the Langley Air Force Base Chapel began June 19, 1934 and continued until June 8, 1935.

The total cost of the project was $114,644.58, including $4,127 for a pipe organ.

VIRGINIA AIR, SPACE CENTER HOSTS INTERACTIVE MATH EXHIBIT

The Virginia Air and Space Center, home to relics from Joint Base Langley-Eustis’ rich history, is hosting an interactive traveling exhibit called MathAlive!, which started Oct. 22, 2016 and runs through January 8, 2017 as part of a military tour to give back to the families of service members.

The educational exhibit travels to locations with a high concentration of military families and provides visitors with 40 different interactive activities such as video games, sports, design and music, attempting to make learning mathematics an enjoyable experience.

Todd Probert, Raytheon’s mission support vice president, wants to highlight the diversity of the exhibits that take a different approach to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, or STEM, to help children get excited about learning with games like virtual snowboarding and a 360-degree freeze action camera.

“It’s critical for our nation’s prosperity that we grow a solid cadre of engineering and math experts for tomorrow’s existence,” said Probert. “This is particularly important when it comes to the military. If we have a strong core of engineers and scientist that’s going to help us be stronger in the future.”

With the importance of STEM learning, Probert stressed the need to expose military families in areas such as Hampton Roads to different forms of learning.

“We want to bring STEM to children in exhibits that they understand and relate to,” said Probert during a school’s visit to the exhibit. “As you walk around and see the children playing, each of them has found something different to be excited about.”

The MathAlive! exhibit is designed to ignite an interest in STEM and illustrates how children may use these subjects throughout everyday life.

Two hangars on Langley trumphet architect’s vision

Two brick hangars on Sweeney Boulevard are among the most historically significant structures in aviation history. Even a quick glance at the masonry work reveals the architect and masons had long-range plans for the buildings. The five-pointed stars at each end of the buildings harken back to the Army Air Service’s earliest days. But wait; do you see what I see?

Above each one of the doors facing Sweeney is a concrete emblem, and they’re not all the same. Ever wonder what those intricate symbols on Hangars 777 and 781 really mean?

A present-day look around Langley Air Force Base reveals one key thing; the base is in the midst of the most significant transformation in a number of years. In the Shellbank section of the base there is a new fitness center ready to open in just a few days. Many of the new 1+1 dormitories are complete.

The Air Combat Command Operations Support Center construction site looms at the LaSalle Gate entrance and more than $100 million of construction projects to support the beddown of the F/A-22 Raptor are in work across the base.

Such hustle and bustle of activity also existed 86 years ago as Langley Field emerged from plantation land to budding experimental airfield facility. But those early days of construction at the flying field were an ordeal.

According to the 1977 edition of Langley Field, the Early Years, one of the first soldiers to arrive there recorded that it was “Nature’s greatest ambition to produce in this, her cesspool,

the muddiest mud, the weediest weeds, the dustiest dust and the most ferocious mosquitoes the world has ever known. Her plans were so well formulated and adhered to that she far surpassed her wildest hopes and dreams.”

But at this wretched location, a man with a vision for America’s journey with aviation, worthy structures would be designed and built.

Albert Kahn was born in1869 in Rhaunen, Germany and had an astonishing career from the beginning of this century. He is best known for his industrial architecture for the rising auto industry and the U.S. war effort in World War I and World War II. From information at the website for Brooks AFB, Texas, Hangar 9 at Brooks is the oldest military aircraft hangar in the U.S. Hangar 9 was constructed between 1917 and 1918 as one of twelve wood airplane hangars on the hangar line at the new Brooks Field.

Both the site plan for Brooks Field and the original buildings were designed by Kahn. He supplied standardized plans for a number of U.S. Army Air Corps installations, including Langley and Arcadia Field in California.

Kahn later achieved fame as the designer of numerous industrial facilities worldwide, including the Ford Model-T factory in Detroit, Michigan (1909), the Goodyear Airdock dirigible hangar in Akron, Ohio (1929), and the Dodge Half-Ton Truck Plant in Detroit, Michigan (1938).

Kahn’s industrial designs are characterized by the use of complex truss systems to span vast spaces, as well as the adaptation of modular architecture to production processes. The only orig-

inal Kahn building still standing today at Brooks City-Base is Hangar 9, which was restored in the 1960s and now houses the Edward H. White II Museum of Aerospace Medicine.

Langley is much more fortunate because we have many more Kahn designed buildings. A total of eight major structures and 26 houses which still stand today.

And although the two hangars on Sweeney aren’t the oldest, they’re next to the oldest; made of brick –and the real bonus – we’ve got twins. The hangars were built from 1918 to 1919. The sides of the buildings closet to the dirt runway originally were fitted with overhead doors which rolled up

To help illuminate the building there were skylights and the sides towards Sweeney were almost entirely filled with windows – but now are filled in with concrete.

The 1st Civil Engineer Squadron contracted a Langley AFB Emblem Documentation study done December, 2000. The study reveals the elements having to do with flight, power and authority on those concrete emblems above the doors.

On one is a circular emblem with a U.S. shield with a single wing projecting from the left side. At the top is a winged cherub with a smooth helmet.

On each side of the shield are fasces, also known as bundles of lictors, with axes, which in Roman times symbolized power and authority.

They are a sort of cylinder, made of wood branches tied together around an axe. The symbolism of the fasces is that of strength through unity. The same symbol can be found on the backs of Mercury dimes and in the halls of Congress. But in the 1920s it became the symbol of fascism.

Another also features the U.S. shield, this time with a single star and projecting wings. At the top of the shield is a front view of a circa 1920s airplane, one of several designs created in 1917 to represent a military aviator.

On either side are sheathed swords representing justice and military power, refering to both reserved strength and active warfare. The laural plant sprigs at the bottom symbolize achievement and excellence.

Next features the U.S. shield with a vertical two-bladed propeller attached to the ring gear of an airplane engine – representing flight engineering. The winged cherub with a helmut represents dignity, honor and glory. And there are fasces on this emblem too.

Longacre, A Place like no other: The origins of Langley Field, 1916 – 1921; As an experimental station and proving ground, a permanent facility for testing not only American but also allied aircraft, Langley deserved an architecture inherently its own, one that drew on classical as well as New World forms and adhered to exacting standards of design.

Khan resolved to create a unique installation, a place like no other in military history, and the care he gave his work would be commensurate with this grandiose vision.

Those magnificent hangars and accompanying concrete crests are to this day reminders of his vision and make Langley all the more significant as an early home for aviation pioneers.

The 633rd Medical Group’s Expeditionary Medical Support tested their rapid support capabilities with a medical global response force training mission Oct. 17 through 21 at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia’s, Raptor Town, which is a small deployment compound nestled behind the flightline.

When a country is in need of medical relief and humanitarian aid, the EMEDs team here may get the call to deploy their 25-bed field hospital within 72 hours of notification depending on their turn in a yearly on-call rotation.

“You take leave with the understanding that if you get recalled, you have to come back.

When we went to Liberia, I was at my Mom and Dad’s 50th wedding anniversary,” said Senior Master Sgt. Curtis Miller, 633rd Medical Support Squadron superintendent. “I just got there…when I got the call. They said ‘you have six hours to be back at base.’”

The training opportunity focused on mirroring what medics like Miller have encountered in humanitarian support environments where their initial response mission is to provide basic medical, while others are providing aid.

“Here at Langley we have it all; the personnel, equipment, tents, everything needed to stand up and operate a 25-bed hospital,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Norman Fox, EMEDS commander.

“We can go anywhere in the world in support of major combat, contingency, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, defense support of civil authorities or stability operations.”

Usually these types of exercises involve fake wounds and simulated ailments. This training included that, in addition, to real patients with basic medical needs that are often found in impoverished countries in need of humanitarian relief, said Keith Morgan, medical contingency planning official.

“A lot of times, this is the first sort of definitive care these people are seeing,” said Col. Susan Pietrykowski, 633rd Medical Group commander. “What we see as basic needs is a higher level of care for them.”

For Maj. Aleacha Philson, 633rd Medical Operations Squadron pediatrics flight commander, the real-world training was vital in catching hiccups that could hinder such care during an actual humanitarian mission.

“Providing them with real patients helps them see what challenges they may be faced with,” said Philson. “It provides better feedback in the after-action report. We would rather get that now than when we have an actual real word global response mission.”

But, before the medics saw their first patients they set up their own tents, generators

and systems in a building block style that allowed them to either add or take away hospital sections based on the crisis’ needs. At its full capacity the field hospital, which has to be operational within 60 hours of boots-on-theground, can provide care for a population at risk up to 6,500.

“When I was in Liberia we built our own perimeter fence, we produced our own power, set up our own communication system and tents; we did everything, “said Miller, who deployed to build the field hospital in support of Operation United Assistance.

For the training, once all was set up, it was time to provide real patient care for active duty members during which Miller’s primary training goal was put to the test.

“This is about going back to the basics in which we not only provide services to other people, but we’re actually looking out for each other,” said Miller. “Getting to know the people on your team and getting them to be able to function appropriately and effectively together is key. When I do take them down range and when we end up in that Haiti situation or Liberia situation, I know that I have a trusted team.”

Usually these types of exercises involve fake wounds and simulated ailments. This training included that, in addition, to real patients with basic medical needs that are often found in impoverished countries in need of humanitarian relief, said Keith Morgan, medical contingency planning official.

“A lot of times, this is the first sort of definitive care these people are seeing,” said Col. Susan Pietrykowski, 633rd Medical Group commander. “What we see as basic needs is a higher level of care for them.”

For Maj. Aleacha Philson, 633rd Medical Operations Squadron pediatrics flight commander, the real-world training was vital in catching hiccups that could hinder such care during an actual humanitarian mission.

“Providing them with real patients helps them see what challenges they may be faced with,” said Philson. “It provides better feedback in the after-action report. We would rather get that now than when we have an actual real word global response mission.”

and systems in a building block style that allowed them to either add or take away hospital sections based on the crisis’ needs. At its full capacity the field hospital, which has to be operational within 60 hours of boots-on-theground, can provide care for a population at risk up to 6,500.

“When I was in Liberia we built our own perimeter fence, we produced our own power, set up our own communication system and tents; we did everything, “said Miller, who deployed to build the field hospital in support of Operation United Assistance.

For the training, once all was set up, it was time to provide real patient care for active duty members during which Miller’s primary training goal was put to the test.

“This is about going back to the basics in which we not only provide services to other people, but we’re actually looking out for each other,” said Miller. “Getting to know the people on your team and getting them to be able to function appropriately and effectively together is key. When I do take them down range and when we end up in that Haiti situation or Liberia situation, I know that I have a trusted team.”

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: early detection saves lives

According to the American Cancer Society, about one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer during her lifetime.

Joint Base Langley-Eustis’ women’s health clinics and mammography departments are encouraging women during October, recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to come in for regularly scheduled women’s health appointments and mammograms in order to detect and possibly prevent breast cancer.

“Being proactive is very important because the earlier we detect an issue with the breast, the better the five-year prognosis and the survival rate will be,” said Dr. Edward Boston, MacDonald Army Health Center Women’s Health Clinic physician. “The longer patients wait and put off coming in for regular appointments, the higher the risk involved if breast cancer is found.”

Annual mammograms are recommended for women over the age of 40 and those who have a family history of breast cancer, as their risk is higher.

Melissa McRae, 633rd Surgical Operations Squadron command secretary, discovered just three years ago that an older relative had previously been treated for breast cancer, and immediately scheduled a mammogram which came back negative for any evidence of breast cancer.

When she reached the age of 40, she scheduled her annual mammogram and was called back for additional testing

after the technician reviewed her scans.

While her additional testing did not reveal breast cancer, it was determined she is at a higher risk for developing breast cancer so she will be required to come back for more testing regularly.

“It’s always been drilled into my brain to ensure I am proactive when it came to my health, but once I found out my family history I knew I definitely had to come in instead of putting off those appointments like a lot of people do,” said McRae. “I wanted to be sure that we would have a better chance of catching it early since I am at a higher risk, so that we can fight it and I have a better chance of being around for my son.”

Clinic physicians also recommend performing monthly self breast exams to look for any abnormal lumps in the breasts, abnormal breast discharge, abnormal breast asymmetry or redness of the breasts and report any findings to their primary care provider as soon as possible so they can order testing.

To educate the JBLE community on the importance of prevention and early detection of breast cancer, MCAHC has display tables in their dining facility with information, as well as a tree decorated in pink gear for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the Women’s Health Clinic.

A U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III from Dover Air Force Base, Deleware, transported about 20 membersof the 689th Rapid Port Opening Element from Haiti to Joint Base Langley-Eustis Oct. 20, 2016. The Soldiers spent about two weeks supporting disaster relief and humanitarian assistance efforts as a result of Hurricane Matthew.

The overall mission was to transport 400 tons of emergency-relief supplies via truck and helicopter to the people of Haiti.

“As a rapid deploying unit, RPOE Soldiers must always be prepared to provide support anywhere in the world at a moment’s notice,” said U.S. Army Capt.

Adam Grover, 689th commander.

The 689th RPOE worked with members of the 621st Contingency Response Wing, Defense Logistics Agency and multiple other Department of Defense assets as part a joint task force in a massive effort to receive and sort supplies that came into Port-au-Prince International Airport, Haiti, before coordinating delivery to the hardest-hit areas.

“I think what’s critical to remember is the role that we play is to provide a unique capability that no one else can provide during a specific period in time,” said U.S. Navy Adm. Kurt Tidd, U.S. Southern Command commander.

“What we did was the big jump start to be able to surge that initial volume of critical life-saving materials forward to get it on the ground, get it in the hands of the [Nongovernmental Organizations] and the distribution network.
