September 18, 2015 marks the commemoration of 68 years of airpower as U.S. Air Force Airmen, past and present, celebrate the Air Force’s birthday.

The legacy of the Air Force dates back to the beginning of the 20th century when the U.S. Army Signal Corps formed an Aeronautical Division, only three-and-a-half years after the Wright brothers flew the world’s first powered airplane, according to airforce.com.

Within a matter of 40 years that encompassed roles in two world wars, the Aeronautical Division took on several arrangements and names, ultimately earning its independence as a partner with the Army and Navy in 1947.

Today, the Air Force’s mission to “fly, fight and win ... in air, space and cyberspace,” merely alludes to the diversity of capabilities comprised of contemporary Airmen, and the opportunity for Airmen to grow personally and professionally.

Airman 1st Class Haley Benson, Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, honor guardsman, reflected on the Air Force’s rich heritage and where the force is today in terms of diversity, equality and technological advancements.

Benson grew up in an Air Force family with both of her parents serving, and although she said the force has changed a lot from the stories her parents told her, to her, the Air Force has been a way of life that continues to improve the quality of person she is.

“Both my parents were in the Air force, my dad retired, my mom served for six years, and whenever I talked about what it was like for them it seems so different,” she explained. “It seems like we have a lot more to do now as a standout person, not just a standout Airman.”

At the center of the Air Force’s “total person concept” are its core values: Integrity first, Service before self and Excellence in all we do. For Benson, the

core values provide a foundation for life.

“The core values are huge staples in our military, they’re so important to live by and be a part of,” she said. “Integrity first - that’s one of my favorite virtues because it takes a lot of courage. Doing the right thing takes a lot of courage. Putting service before yourself is the most selfless thing you could do, especially in the military, and excellence in all we do is just always striving to be better until the day you die. Holding onto those firm beliefs will never steer you wrong.”

In keeping with those tenets, the Air Force offers its Airmen the ability to better themselves and help improve the lives of others through a variety of opportunities. Today, more than ever, Airmen are encouraged to take full advantage of prospects the Air Force affords.

“What opportunities has the air force not offered to me?” Benson asked. “I’m trying to get my master’s [degree] and the opportunity to have an education is something that the Air Force is very big on.

“The care for your education, the care

for your families and the care the Air Force has for the community members is incredible,” she continued. “I’ve had so many opportunities to be involved with my community that I wouldn’t probably get, with as much enthusiasm as the Air Force allows me, on the outside [of the military]. The impact and ability I can have as a leader has been incredible. You can be a leader at any rank and the Air Force gives you every opportunity to lead.”

Recognizing the support the Air Force provides its Airmen and their families is to distinguish the organization’s ability to maintain and advance its performance level.

“The Air Force birthday really is in such a short period of time when you look at the whole military,” Benson said. “The Air Force is like the baby of the military, but our advancements in airpower and space are incredible. To carry on the legacy is really to carry on the works that people have done before us, and to step to their level and continue to grow as the most powerful air force in the world. We’ve come a long way, but it’s far from the end.”

JBLE soccer team competes in DoD competition

U.S. Air Force Airmen represented Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, in the Department of Defense Defender’s Cup Military Soccer Tournament hosted

by Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, Sept. 4-7.

Approximately 22 Airmen from different units across Langley competed in the competition, which welcomed all base-level soccer teams from any service installation worldwide.

“We’ve been practicing two times, sometimes three times, a week,” said Staff Sgt. Daniel Pelrine, Langley soccer team forward and co-captain. “Just overall from the intramural season and any off-base leagues that the players play on around here, we’ve just been trying to keep the rust off of us and stay sharp.”

During team practices, soccer balls could be seen flying through the air and zipping past feet, as the men and women went through warm-up drills to get their legs loose and conducted team scrimmages to challenge their readiness for the tournament.

According to Senior Airman Audri Brooks, team defender, several players have been playing together in an off-base soccer league and she believes the team works well together, which helped them prepare for the 40 team, single-elimination tournament.

With the defenders cup concluding its 14th year, the Langley team returned with no regrets from their efforts in the tournament, where they finished 25th out of 40.

Staff Sgt. Patrick Hart, team co-captain, also said that the level of competition was incredibly high.

Adding, the toughness of the competition exceeded skill as all teams’ battled temperatures ranging from 90 to 115 degrees throughout the tournament.

The team competed in the 14th Annual Defender’s Cup Military Soccer Tournament at Joint Base San AntonioLackland,Texas, which they haven’t won since 2003.

“The Langley soccer team feels great about their performance, especially since we haven’t played together as long as most teams in the tournament,” said Hart.

“Our strong defense certainly stood out, obviously we wish we could have won the entire tournament, but that only gives us something to strive for in coming years.”

Although the team did not win, the captains believe in the future of the team.

“Langley soccer is revitalized and will continue building throughout the coming year,” said Hart. “The opportunities in our area to grow and excel as a club are vast.”

Team Langley will practice, condition, and take advantage of mini-tournaments, as well as participate in off-base adult leagues. Langley will be ready to bring home the trophy next year, concluded Hart.

Army announces 2015 Drill Sergeants of the Year, AIT Platoon Sergeant of the Year Press Release TRADOC, CENTER FOR INITIAL MILITARY TRAINING

Winners of the 2015 U.S. Army Drill Sergeant and Advanced Individual Training Platoon Sergeant of the Year competition were announced in a military ceremony at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Friday, Sept. 10, 2015.

The winners will relocate to Fort Eustis, Virginia, where they will serve on one-year special assignments at the Army’s Center for Initial Military Training as advisors and subject matter experts on enlisted individual entry training.

The U.S. Army selected Staff Sgt. Jacob Miller, representing Fort Leonard Wood, as the 2015 U.S. Army Drill Sergeant of the Year (active component); Staff Sgt. Mark Mercer, representing the

95th Reserve Division as the 2015 Army Reserve Drill Sergeant of the Year; and Sgt. 1st Class Samuel Enriquez, representing Fort Sam Houston, Texas, as the 2015 Advanced Individual Training (AIT) Platoon Sergeant of the Year.

The two drill sergeant winners were among the top six of the Army’s top drill sergeants and the AIT platoon sergeant winner came from the Army’s top eight AIT platoon sergeants.

All three winners were awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.

The DSOY and AIT PSOY competition is a “best-of-the-best� contest that places physical demands and mental challenges upon the Army’s best trainers and mentors of new Soldiers.

The forum is held to identify and address Soldiers, retirees, civilians, Wounded Warriors, family members and surviving spousesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; issues of concern by taking in installation questions and working with subject matter experts to ďŹ nd solutions. weather and surprise events over the four-day event. To earn the coveted title of DSOY or AIT PSOY, the competitors must perform and instruct more than 50 tasks and drills. These included unknown distance runs, unknown distance foot marches, rappelling, orienteering, obstacle courses, physical readiness training and appearances before a board of command sergeants major to evaluate their knowledge of leadership and training tasks.

In other Army competitions, individuals or buddy systems must overcome physical and mental stress to win. While similar, the DSOY and AIT PSOY competition also focuses on the contestants’ ability to teach. Drill sergeants and AIT platoon sergeants are the first line educators of the Army and must be highly skilled at getting through to all the new Soldiers they must train. The added dimension of the competitors’ ability to maintain poise and focus emotionally as they teach basic skills to new Soldiers while enduring physical and mental challenges highlights why the Army places faith and trust in their abilities as professionals.

CIMT is the core function lead for U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command for all initial entry training. The CIMT mission provides a process that aligns the development of competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities and attributes) and behaviors in civilian volunteers so they can become Soldiers who are physically ready, grounded in Army values and competent in their skills so they are able to contribute as leaders or members of a team upon arrival at their first unit of assignment. CIMT trains nearly 144,000 Soldiers and officers annually.

“Every issue that is submitted whether it is one of the six going forward or not, is sent to the garrison commander for review,” said Rector. “This gives leadership another way to see what post members would like to improve upon and it helps with quality of life.”

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, there was a total of more than 41,000 lives lost in 2013: one every 12.8 minutes, according to Suicide Awareness Voices of Education.

To combat the prevalence of deaths caused by suicide, U.S. Service members and Hampton Roads, Virginia, citizens joined forces to spread awareness about suicide prevention during the 10th annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk at Mount Trashmore Park in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Sept. 12.

“We’re trying to bring the disease of depression and the tragedy of suicide out of the darkness - there is a link,” said Tom Schaad, WAVY News 10 anchor. “There are walks to promote good physical health ... but this is one to promote mental health and it’s just as important as being strong and healthy physically. Our community has been so responsive to the need to raise awareness.”

In addition, a Hampton Roads couple, Steve and Kim Bach, spoke of their experience in dealing with their son’s suicide.

“When I saw the flashing lights, I thought to myself, this can’t be good,” said Kim. “My heart broke. It became clear when the police officer walked up to us and said, ‘He didn’t make it,’ and from that moment on my perspective in life changed.

“He wasn’t the depressed, moping person you see on TV,” she continued. “Before Evan’s death, I never thought about suicide. In these four years through the grief work and healing, I’ve come to understand that Evan was depressed.”

After the more formal portion of the event, the walk started off with several Hampton Roads community leaders walking through a veil of origami cranes, symbolizing prayers of peace for those who died by suicide and anyone presently suffering from depression. More than 6,000 Hampton Roads citizens and military members, including those aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt in the Persian Gulf, participated in the walk. Out of 325 nationwide walks, in 2014, the Hampton Roads walk was the largest, according to Schaad.

WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III shared the spotlight with a cross-section of people he called his heroes during an emotional multimedia presentation at the Air Force Associationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Air and Space Conference and Technology Exposition Sept. 15.

During his Air Force Update, the general leveraged videos, photos and music to highlight the serviceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history, current capabilities and future operational requirements, while recognizing attendees and even military therapy dogs who exemplify the Air Forceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s core values.

Welsh recognized French train hero Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone, honoring him with a surprise promotion to staff sergeant effective Nov. 1. Stone sews on senior airman in early October.

The general wonders, he said, if pioneers such as ďŹ rst Air Force Secretary Stuart Symington, ďŹ rst Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Carl Spaatz, and Gen. Henry â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hapâ&#x20AC;? Arnold, would recognize the same level of effort in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Air Force. He said he believes so.

In July 2015, for example, Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Larry O. Spencer and Sen. John McCain recognized 2nd Lt. John Pedevillano, the 306th Bomb Groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s youngest bombardier who was shot down during a historic raid, captured and subsequently liberated from a prison camp in Germany 70 years ago.

Among others, the general recognized Air Force Capt. Christy Wise, the HC-130 King pilot who nearly lost her life during a paddleboat trip after a ďŹ shing boat claimed her right leg. Wise has since competed in the Defense Departmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Warrior Games and is currently preparing for the Army 10-miler in October. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just something special about this profession; thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something special about the people who share it, and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something really special about the pride that consumes them,â&#x20AC;? The general said whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a local air show, simple observation of a civilian airliner thundering overhead or even a teacher blowing on a piece of paper to explain the concept of lift, the Air Force, for some people, becomes a passion and a commitment to a community that understands.

And Welsh takes equal pride in the serviceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s operational feats as he does in the people to whom he bestowed recognition during the event.

Since Welshâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s last update, the Air Force has ďŹ nished its 24th consecutive year of combat operations. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No Air Force has ever done that before,â&#x20AC;? he said.

But the â&#x20AC;&#x153;meat and potatoes of the ďŹ ght,â&#x20AC;? Welsh insisted, are equipment programs such as the combat rescue helicopter, which he said is tied to the fabric of the Air Force.

Similarly, while the joint surveillance target and reconnaissance system is â&#x20AC;&#x153;phenomenal,â&#x20AC;? itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to recapitalize this airframe, Welsh said.

He also noted that the service continues its â&#x20AC;&#x153;incredibleâ&#x20AC;? success story of launch by Air Force Space Command and its global partners. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our great Air Force Space Command team continued to make sure that if you drop a precision weapon on the other side of the planet, it will hit where youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re aiming,â&#x20AC;? he said.

In offensive and defense space control, Welsh said senior airmen and staff sergeants are affecting every activity that occurs in the counter-terrorism war.

Welsh described the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance team as â&#x20AC;&#x153;unbelievable,â&#x20AC;? noting some 1.6 million ďŹ&#x201A;ying hours with 35,000 ISR Airmen who support every U.S. military activity on the globe.

The cyber team, Welsh said, is broadening its knowledge base with Airmen who have been involved in over 9,000 cyber operations, in addition to defending fellow Airmen and their networks from security breaches.

“We now have the capability developed by (mobility) Airmen to actually do critical surgeries inflight,” Welsh said. “Can you imagine?”

Some of the Air Force’s “hidden gems,” Welsh shared, are the 50,000-plus Airmen conducting commanding and control, including airborne and dynamic targeting at air operations centers around the globe.

Of his recent visit to the 624th Operations Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, the general reported, “We now have Airmen who’ve taken the concept of air operations centers, ISR and global operations … and are … developing a way of allocating resources to provide cyber support to forces from all services, all commands, all the time, all over the world.” And this concept, he was “a PowerPoint slide” three years ago.

Meanwhile, air staff has been developing the Air Force Future Operating Concept, which fits into a series of documents encompassing the service’s vision statement, while its global vision, reach and power outline the products the service provides theater commanders and national leaders.

But, according to Welsh, the future operating concept is more specific than an aspirational document, because it’s potentially what the Air Force could look like in 20 years.

The overall intent is to reach toward the “call to the future,” a 30-year focus on research and development, and science and technology against a changing global landscape.

The Air Force Strategic Master Plan, Welsh added, is the actual road map for getting to these goals.

“Based on the money we have, what are we going to buy, develop, teach and train … to reach that operating concept?”

The future-operating concept will be released this week when Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James gives the final approval, Welsh explained. “You can even get the (application) for your phone.”

standing right here -- maybe as a hologram by then -- and telling you that the mission of the United States Air Force is going to stay the same for the next 20 years.”

But, Welsh acknowledged, he hopes that future Air Force chief doesn’t report the equipment remains the same.

“We must modernize our Air Force.”

As such, Welsh and other senior leaders have been trying in earnest to

retain the funding for and timelines on the F-35A Lightning II, the KC-46 Pegasus and the long-range strike bomber.

“The secretary has been very faithful to these programs,” he said.

Welsh said the Air Force must continue funding for its space capabilities, as well as reinvestments in the nuclear infrastructure and cyber domain.

“If we want to have acquisition reform, we are all going to have to accept some risk,” Welsh said.

Mulberry Island Half Marathon and 5K Run The 733rd Force Support Division will host the 34th annual Mulberry Island Half Marathon and 5K Challenge Run Sept. 19, starting at Anderson Field House at 443 Dickman Street. This is a Peninsula Track Club Grand Prix event, which will be run entirely on Fort Eustis.

The course surface is 99 percent flat asphalt roadways.

The race route will take you past the historic Matthew Jones House, along the James River with a view of the Ghost Fleet, near Fort Crawford and then past the site of an early American brick factory located on Mulberry Island.

Parking, restroom and shower facilities will be available for use at Anderson Field House. Water stations will be provided at locations throughout the race course and at the finish line. T-shirts are guaranteed to all pre-registered

Volunteers needed for VA Beach Neptune Festival Parade For this year’s Virginia Beach Neptune Festival parade, the organization has requested 25 Airmen to form a marching unit. The parade will take place Saturday, Sept. 26 at 11:30 a.m., with a report time of 10 a.m. Participation in the parade, which will transit Atlantic Avenue at the Virginia Beach oceanfront, should last approximately 45 minutes, and cover less than one mile.

Service dress is the uniform of the day for the event.
