Hurricane Shelter Rules Rules have been established for safety and welfare. The shelter manager has the option to enforce additional rules if circumstances warrant. If for any reason the shelter rules are not obeyed, individuals may be asked to leave. • Sign in before being ofďŹ cially admitted to any shelter. • “Shelter Hoppingâ€? is not permitted. • Individuals are responsible for their belongings. Valuables should be locked in a car, or kept with them at all times. It was only a year ago when a very large and incredibly destructive girl blasted through Joint Base Langley Eustis, Va., and the surrounding area, leaving a disastrous wake everywhere she went.

Her name was Irene, and she was the ďŹ fthcostliest United States hurricane on record.

A year later, JBLE residents are preparing for a new generation of hurricanes, which could potentially ravage the Virginia area.

Senior Airman Asia James, an emergency management specialist with the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron, encourages people to plan ahead to avoid getting caught unprepared at the worst possible moment. “I see people waiting until the last minute to evacuate,â€? she said. “They get out on the road when it’s already ooded, and they get stuck. You have to know if and when you will evacuate before the storm hits.â€?

Ever since that hurricane, James has taken steps to prepare for hurricane season. The Federal Emergency Management Agency also encourages people to prepare for possible hurricanes by ďŹ rst building an emergency kit and making a family communication plan.

According to the FEMA website, a disaster supply kit is a collection of basic items people may need in the event of an emergency. It can contain items like ashlights, weather radios, food and a contact list. Additionally, having fresh water and supplies that are not dependant on utili-

ties could be helpful during an emergency. FEMA also encourages people to keep these items easily accessible in case an evacuation is called for.

In addition to having a kit prepared, James advised people to know the location of shelters in their vicinity. She also said knowing the rules of each shelter can make the entire experience easier. Below is a list of local shelters, basic rules and authorized items.

Shelters will be opened as required, and be based upon the course and severity of a storm, as well as the number of people using them. Not all shelters may be opened for a storm. Residents should tune to radio or television for announcements of shelter openings. The following are prohibited in emergency evacuation shelters: pets, alcohol and weapons.

A redesigned transition-assistance program will help ease every Airman’s transition to civilian life and better apply their military experience, Air Force officials said.

The program is the first major overhaul of the transition assistance program for military members in nearly 20 years.

The effort began in response to a call from President Barack Obama in August 2011 to ensure all service members are “career-ready” when they leave the military.

Slated to begin servicewide in November, the current three-day, optional program will be expanded to five days and has been redesigned into a comprehensive, mandatory program that includes pre-separation counseling, a military-to-civilian skills review, a Veterans Affairs benefits briefing, financial planning support, job search skills building, and individual transition plan preparation.

A pilot program was conducted July 9-13 at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, which allowed the Departments of Defense, Labor and Veterans Affairs to test the initiative.

According to Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley, the redesigned program bolsters and standardizes the transition services that Service members receive prior to retiring or separating from the military to make them employment-ready.

“Our goal is to provide Airmen with a comprehensive transition assistance program that prepares them for life after the military, whether that’s pursuing education, working in the public or civilian sector, or starting a business,” Donley said.

Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James A. Roy said the program is as good for the civilian sector as it is for Airmen.

“Employers are looking for educated, trained, experienced people like those who are separating from the Air Force,” he said. “This program will help smooth our Air-

men’s transitions to civilian life.”

Under the old program, separating Guardsmen and Reservists were often left to their own devices. Roy said another benefit of this new program is the inclusion of the Total Force.

“We want to take care of all our Airmen, and this program does that,” he said. “No component of our Total Force deserves more help transitioning than another.”

By October 2013, three two-day optional sessions on pursuing a technical certification, starting a business or pursuing a higher educational degree will also be offered to Airmen.

“Our Airmen have extraordinary technical expertise and world-class leadership skills that are in high demand,” Donley said. “This program will help them apply their experience to additional training, formal education and develop[ing] successful civilian careers.”

‘Trident’ dive detachment hosts underwater change-of-command

The 511th Dive Detachment, supported by the Special Troops Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade, hosted an underwater change-of-command ceremony at the Aquatic Center on Fort Eustis, Aug. 24.

The ‘Trident’ Soldiers bid farewell to Capt. Timothy O’Hara before the ceremony began with an informal formation.

“It’s definitely sad to leave this unit,” said O’Hara. “It is always hard, but I am looking forward to the next step in my Army career.”

O’Hara joined Capt. Gregory Bascomb, the incoming detachment commander, and Lt. Col. Jared Ware, the 30th Engineer Battalion commander, at the far end of the swimming pool to begin the ceremony. All three secured their dive gear, and jumped into the water to conduct the traditional guidon exchange underwater.

“It is traditional to conduct the change-of-command for a dive detachment underwater,” said Bascomb. “We always try to conduct them in this fashion, unless we are in a deployed environment and it is just not possible.”

The colors passed from O’Hara to Ware, symbolizing the last act of the detachment commander. Ware passed the guidon to Bascomb, bestowing command on the new commander. Finally, Bascomb passed the colors to Sgt. 1st Class Milton Prater, the 511th Dive Det. first sergeant, symbolizing that the colors are always with the Soldiers.

The ceremony concluded with remarks from all three officers and one final tradition. Bascomb put on an 84-lb. weight harness used with the Mach-5 dive suit to keep divers from rising to the surface because of the air in their suits. With the harness on, Bascomb jumped in and walked the entire length of the pool without coming up for air.

“This is another tradition carried out in dive changes-of-command, and I think it shows the incoming officer’s strength,” said Bascomb. “The company commander shows his strength and endurance by wearing that heavy harness and clearing that distance.”

Bascomb expressed his excitement at taking command of a dive detachment after the ceremony.

“I started my Army career over ten years ago as an enlisted diver,” Bascomb said. “I love diving, I love being in the water, and these Soldiers are my brothers.

This is an awesome chance and I am very excited.”

As summer ends, the time for heading back to school begins; whether it is a child’s first year of school or a senior’s last, there are potential dangers lurking around every corner.

Fortunately, ACC Safety is here providing simple reminders on keeping schoolage children safe.

“It is important for parents to stay upto-date on the proper safety precautions, be proactive and to take the time to talk about safety with their kids before they head back to school,” said Master Sgt. Sean Rouillier, ACC Ground Safety Operations manager and father of two.

Whether the school day begins on a bus, bicycle or on foot, Rouillier has transportation tips for parents to keep in mind.

“Whatever your children’s mode of transportation may be, please emphasize to them that they must take proper safety precautions at all times,” he said.

For children walking or riding a bike to school, it is important to map out a safe route with the least amount of traffic crossings possible and ensure children cross only at intersections with a crossing guard. Also, explain the “rules of the road,” such as obeying traffic signs, lights, and completely stopping before crossing the street. In addition, wearing a helmet and bright colors, and staying on the sidewalk, is vital when riding a bike.

Additionally, if a child rides the school bus, it is important to know where the designated drop-off and pick-up areas are. Children should wait for the bus to stop completely before getting on or off it.

Staying seated while the bus is in motion and avoiding crossing the front of a bus can help prevent accidental injuries.

Transportation is not the only thing on parents’ minds during school season, however.

“Pretty much what most parents worry about are bullies, fighting and drugs,” Rouillier said.

Since most parents cannot be by the side of their children throughout the school day, it is important to educate them on the

“I try not to worry too much about the unknown or what might happen. I talk to my boys about my fear of what they might be exposed to in school, and what to do if faced with drugs or bullies,” Rouillier said. “Just give as much support to your children as possible.

Be safe, but not too overprotective, especially in front of classmates who might pick on them for it.”

He admits he was a little overprotective and worried when his kids were heading off to school for the first time. However, after getting to know the school staff and realizing how safe and structured their school program was, he quickly got over it.

“Every school has programs, schedules and plenty of supervision for their child to have a safe, healthy and enjoyable atmosphere,” he said.

It was just past 11 o’clock at night, July 30, and Airman 1st Class Mariah Alexander was beginning to fall asleep in her dorm room.

Suddenly, the phone rang. It was her mother, retired Chief Master Sgt. Yolanda Burroughs. “At ďŹ rst, I wasn’t going to answer because I was trying to go to sleep,â€? said Alexander, who works as a pharmacy technician with the 633rd Medical Support Squadron. “But then I thought about how she’s never called me that late, so I answered the phone. She said, ‘I have some bad news.’â€?

Alexander’s stepfather, retired Chief Master Sgt. Eugene Burroughs Jr., had just died of a heart attack. “I couldn’t believe it,� Alexander said. “I kept saying, ‘Are you sure? Can you check again? There’s no way.’�

Alexander grew up with three Air Force parents. She was raised primarily by her mother and stepfather, and spent summers with her biological father at Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany. “My stepdad raised me, and disciplined me – everything that a dad would do,� she said. “And it was awesome to also be able to spend summers with my dad in Germany.�

Though all three of her parents are retired, they were still there to offer advice as she went through basic military training and tech school, and transitioned to her ďŹ rst duty station at Langley Air Force Base, Va. Her mother and her stepfather both served as military training instructors. She learned facing movements, and how to salute, in their garage. They ran around their neighborhood singing “jodies.â€? “We did not do her any favors or make her life easier because we were Chiefs,â€? said Burroughs. “We set high standards and made her work. Gene called it ‘home training.’ He was quite the disciplinarian, and she used to say she lived in the BBC, the Burroughs Boot Camp. It was our joke with him.â€?

When Alexander graduated basic training, all three of her parents came in uniform to show their support as she carried on the family military tradition.

Alexander reached her one-year mark in the Air Force August 23. At the request of her mother, the 633rd Air Base Wing Command Chief Master Sgt. Trae King presented Alexander with a coin her stepfather had been saving for just such an occasion. When she presented the coin, King read off a few of Burroughs last text messages to Alexander before he passed, including what Alexander called his well-known “chief advice.� “Have I told you I’m proud of you lately,� the text began. “I am!! No expectations, just high hopes that you achieve all you desire in life. I love you!! Always keep a backup uniform ready.�

Burroughs would often send Alexander motivating words to keep her motivated through the ďŹ rst year of her career. “Mariah, cream rises to the top,â€? he texted. “Take initiative, learn fast, volunteer. Act like a NCO! You are going places and – oh, you got this!!!!â€?

He never missed an opportunity to show his pride in Alexander. “You’re my girl,� he exclaimed through text. “You can do absolutely anything you put your mind to. I’m behind you 100 percent.�

Surprised by the presentation of her stepfather’s chief induction coin with his name engraved on it, Alexander cried and hugged King. “I was so excited for it,� said Alexander. “It really meant a lot to know my mom sent his coin to Chief King, and that she

was giving it to me on behalf of him.�

Having been in the Air Force for such a short time, Alexander was shocked and amazed at the way her leadership responded when she got the unfortunate phone call from her mother. She called her supervisor and ďŹ rst sergeant, expecting them to tell her to come in to work and ďŹ ll out her leave paperwork the next morning before she could leave. Instead, her leadership picked her up right away to ďŹ ll out her paperwork, and then drove her to the airport to take the ďŹ rst ight back home to San Antonio to be with her family for the funeral service. They called to check on her while she was away, and sent owers to the funeral home. “It meant a lot to me knowing that it’s not just a work relationship,â€? said Alexander. “They showed me it goes a lot deeper than that.â€?

Alexander spent August 23 reecting on her ďŹ rst year in the U.S. Air Force, and the loving stepfather she lost just three weeks prior. The Army will retain the current threeevent Army Physical Fitness Test, pending a study to determine the best method to measure baseline Soldier physical readiness.

U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command found that implementing changes to how the Army assesses physical fitness would be premature.

“We anticipate that the baseline Soldier physical readiness study, linked to Warrior Tasks and Battle Drills, may generate new information that affects how we develop and test physical fitness,” said TRADOC Command Sgt. Maj. Daniel A. Dailey.

What was proposed?

In 2011, TRADOC implemented a physical fitness training philosophy that Soldiers are better prepared if they train how they would fight. This prompted the Army Physical Fitness School to re-evaluate a Solder’s physical capabilities.

A five-event Army Physical Readiness Test, or APRT, was developed and proposed to replace the current three-event APFT. The proposed test eliminated situps and included the following: 60-yard shuttle run, oneminute rower, standing long jump, oneminute pushup and 1.5-mile run.

More than 10,000 Soldiers worldwide participated in pilot testing of the APRT. After reviewing the data, TRADOC commissioned an independent panel to validate the proposed five-event APRT.

Why retain three-event APFT? In separate reports, the panel of fitness experts from the Department of Physical Education at the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command, and California State University-Fullerton recommended against moving forward with the proposed five-event APRT and that TRADOC further study the issue.

The panel of subject-matter experts agreed that the five-event Army Physical Readiness Test has “face validity” only, meaning that although it appears to measure what it claims to measure, further study would be required to confirm. Additionally, experts agreed that TRADOC should consider other events that may better predict baseline Soldier physical readiness. of combat and duty position, and accomplish the mission while conducting unified land operations.

TRADOC has determined that baseline Soldier physical readiness would be most effectively measured if linked to Warrior Tasks and Battle Drills, known as WTBD – tasks and drills determined over the last decade of war to be critical while conducting unified land operations.

Given the independent study, and the logic of linking fitness to WTBD, TRADOC will initiate a comprehensive study of Soldier fitness requirements to determine the best method to measure baseline Soldier physical readiness. The objective of the study is to select and recommend test events that have a functional connection to WTBD, and accurately measure baseline fitness against valid performance standards. The study is expected to begin in October 2012 and will include fitness experts from across the Army.

Decisions to change long-standing and proven systems of physical fitness are not made lightly, or prematurely, said the TRADOC command sergeant major.

“Emerging factors and changing combat environments demand a thorough understanding before changes are imple-

mented, and thus the decision to retain the current test,” Dailey said. “Whatever the new test looks like, it must accurately evaluate fitness levels for all Soldiers to decisively win in combat.”

What’s next?

TRADOC is preparing to reestablish the master fitness trainer program. Targeting noncommissioned officers, this program,

discontinued in 2001, will eventually provide commanders at all levels certified fitness advisers. A pilot master fitness training course, or MFTC, begins Aug. 27, 2012, to ensure that the appropriate steps are taken to restore this previously successful physical fitness asset to all units.

“Bringing back MFTC will standardize unit physical training and increase unit readiness across the Army,” Dailey said, referring to the doctrine in TC 3-22.20 Army Physical Readiness Training (Aug. 2010).

TC 3-22.20 focuses unit training on developing Soldier physical readiness required to perform WTBD. WTBD are the fundamental combat skills which all Soldiers, regardless of rank, age, gender or military occupational specialty, must perform in order to fight and win on the battlefield. To strengthen the emphasis on implementing physical readiness training doctrine Army wide, TRADOC will also transition TC 3-22.20 Physical Readiness Training to Field Manual 7-22 Physical Readiness Training in fall 2012.

“It’s time to break the culture of ‘training to the test’ and focus instead on preparing all Soldiers for the physical challenges of the current and future operating environment. Executing physical training in accordance with the doctrine [TC 3-22.20] will also reduce injuries and improve Soldier performance on the APFT,” Dailey said.

“TRADOC recognizes that leaders will continue to assess unit physical training needs based on the mission and the OE and adjust training as necessary, but the place to start is the TC.”

COMBAT FROM PAGE 9 Proper barriers and overhead protection are essential to the success of the oneday course. In the M-4 course, students are required to fire from three distances and from various positions.

“With the classes being shorter, students are more susceptible to learning and they are genuinely in a better mood because of it,” said Staff Sgt. Ryan Snow, 633rd Security Forces Squadron Combat Arms instructor, adding that CA instructors teach four courses weekly.

The instructors also have the ability to perform night-fire qualification, and teach classes with fewer than 10 students, an option not available at Fort Eustis.

In addition to simple marksmanship, combat skills are part of the course.

“Our Airmen may have to clear out a room or a building. These are skills they are learning here,” said Bolling.

The Army-constru ucted causeway pier was one of five p places where vessels could dock and o offload their cargo. Soldiers built the 11,200-foot pier in two days, and then ssecured it to the beach. Once in place, the pier facilitated movement of morre than 300 vehicles and countless piecces of equipment from the sea to land.

The 7th Sus. Bde. provided more than 550 Soldiers and 15 Army vessels, including various landing craft, logistic support vessels, large tugboats,

small tugboats and causeway ferries.

These craft moved Army rolling vehicles, including palletized load systems, heavy equipment transporters, Humvees and forklifts.

Army and Navy watercraft docked with the causeway to offload their cargo, regardless of the weather and water conditions. As vessels came in to dock, Army watercraft personnel waited on the pier to safely and quickly secure each vessel.

“The water does not always make securing the vessel the easiest thing in the world,” said Pfc. Robert Byrom, 331th Trans. Co. watercraft operator.

“The wave hit these ships so hard, and makes them move so much, we have to work really hard to get them secured quickly.”

To the left and right of the causeway, Sailors stood in teams on the beaches.

They used flags and hand signals to bring vessels to shore quickly and securely. Each watercraft had to be stable on the beach before Army vehicle operators could bring the cargo to shore.

Vehicles coming directly onto the sand faced one final challenge before being moved inland - avoiding getting stuck. Some of the heavier, rearwheeled vehicles got caught in the sand for only a few moments before the ‘Resolute’ drivers mitigated the situation.

As JLOTS concluded on Aug. 23, the hard work and dedication of more than 1,100 Soldiers and Sailors paid off with the successful movement of every piece of equipment from sea to land. All involved hailed this mission a great success.

“I was very impressed how well the Navy and Army personnel interacted with each other,” said Linderman. “We controlled the vessels and got everything to shore. This was a great mission.”

Local and national news outlets have reported an increased number of West Nile Virus cases this year. In light of these higher numbers, knowledge about the virus, its symptoms and treatment can ensure local residents continue to enjoy outdoor activities instead of winding up in the emergency room.

However, before panic spreads over some new West Nile Virus endemic, Lt. Col. Brian Ortman, Public Health flight commander, shared some facts about the disease.

“Only two cases of West Nile have been reported in Virginia,” said Ortman. “Of those two, neither was on the peninsula or near Langley [Air Force Base].”

The peninsula area does havea few mosquitoes that have tested positive for West Nile, but this is typical. The real reason humans don’t catch West Nile has to do with the virus itself.

A human’s metabolic temperature, which hovers around 99 degrees, usually prevents the virus from taking hold in the body.

According to the Virginia Department of Health, only 20 percent of those infected with the virus will show symptoms at all. Those symptoms resemble that of a cold or the flu, such as fever, muscle aches, fatigue or joint pain.

Roughly 0.7 percent of those infected will show more severe symptoms, such as vision loss, confusion, seizures or paralysis. In an even smaller amount of those infected, the neurological effects can be permanent.

But Ortman said not to worry, because US Air Force Hospital Langley has the ability to treat the symptoms of the virus, and after three to five days, patients’ immune systems will kick in and knock out the virus.

“It is very rare to die of West Nile Virus,” said Ortman. “Even if left untreated, the average person will only suffer a week of bed rest and mild symptoms.”

Ortman said if the more serious symptoms do occur, the infected individual should seek medical attention immediately to prevent further

Mosquitoes aren’t the only critters that should concern individuals looking to spend a day out at the park or by the lake. Ticks are always a concern, said Ortman, because they carry Lyme disease; a bacterial infection.

Lyme disease comes from the feces of a tick falling into the bite wound.

According to the Center for Disease Control, 70 to 80 percent of the infected will contract a “bull’s-eye” rash three to 30 days after the bite, but usually after only a week the rash will occur.

The rash might expand up to 12 inches across. The name is derived from the clearing of the rash in some areas, causing an outer ring to form around the center of the rash.

Once a rash appears in any form, Ortman suggests seeking out medical treatment.

Other symptoms include additional rashes, facial paralysis, severe headaches, pain and swelling in the joints, shooting pains, dizziness and heart

palpitations. Five percent of people left untreated will develop severe symptoms such as numbness in the hands and feet, tingling and short term memory problems. If these symptoms occur with the other symptoms, seek emergency medical aid.

Before cancelling any lakeside fishing adventures due to an overwhelming fear of ticks, the ticks around Langley AFB have not tested positive for Lyme disease. Though that is good news, Ortman pressed caution.

“Other places where you go get these diseases,” said Ortman. “Just because Langley has no infected ticks doesn’t mean the disease isn’t out there.”

Ortman mentioned two chemical compounds that are great prevention methods for bugs of all sort, especially ticks and mosquitoes.

The chemical Permethrin is an extremely effective insect repellant, said Ortman. When wearing clothing treated with Permethrin, not only is the wearer guaranteed protection for 50 wash cycles, but bug bites drop to near zero.

“I went hunting without my treated uniform once, and came home with nearly 50 ticks of all sizes,” said Ortman. “When I wear my treated uniform, I can’t see a single tick.”

Permethrin can be found in most large sporting goods stores or hunting shops.

N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide, or DEET, spray is the main ingredient in almost every commercial bug spray. It has the same affect on bugs as Permethrin, and can be found in large convenience stores and sporting goods stores.

Aside from treating yourself to a chemical cocktail, dumping out still water around the house and in the yard, such as buckets, planters and bird baths, will stop mosquitoes from laying eggs nearby. Simply washing after a day out in the wilderness knocks off tiny ticks that haven’t had time to cement themselves to their host.

By combining knowledge of symptoms from these diseases with prevention methods, no one should be afraid to brave the wilds and experience a wonderful outdoor adventure.

After the International Security Assistance Force mission ends in December 2014, Afghanistan will experience a period of hope, combined with numerous challenges, the ISAF commander said.

Speaking to Pentagon reporters via satellite from his command in Kabul, U.S. Marine Corps Gen. John R. Allen said Afghan security forces will be at full strength by 2015, with 352,000 members, and Afghanistan will have a new, democratically elected government.

Afghan forces will be fully in the lead for the security of the entire Afghan population, and they will be deployed in a manner to deal with violence Apparent improvements in security will create the opportunity for improved governance from both Afghanistanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s central government and the provincial governments throughout the nation, the general said.

Enhanced security has provided opportunity for improved governance at the at the local level, â&#x20AC;&#x153;which is really key for the Afghans â&#x20AC;&#x201C; increasingly key, even today, in some areas of Afghanistan where we have seen really dramatic improvements in security,â&#x20AC;? Allen said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is now the moment for [Afghan President Hamid Karzaiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s] administration to begin the process of concentrating on subprovincial and district governance and the establishment of the rule of law,â&#x20AC;? he said. As security continues to improve, he added, Afghanistan has the opportunity to improve subnational governance and give the Afghan people the chance to commit themselves to the government.

Allen noted by Jan. 1, 2015, Afghanistan will have new national leadership in place following democratic elections. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So we will see a transition in [2014] to a new administration and a new government with a new president,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And that president will have seen the period of time in the last 28 months, in the last several years, of the emergence of an Afghan national security force.â&#x20AC;?

The general described the 2015 Afghan security force as professionals willing to sacriďŹ ce mightily on behalf of the Afghan people to achieve a level of security, to give the new administration, ministries and judiciaries the opportunity to become a part of Afghan citizensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; lives.

Allen also said the Afghan people will feel the reassurance of the international community as it fulďŹ lls the commitments to Afghanistan decided upon three months ago at NATOâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s summit in Chicago. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[Afghans will see] the promises that were made by the heads of state of the ISAF coalition in Chicago to continue to support and sustain the [Afghan national security forces] â&#x20AC;Ś with the right amount of resources.â&#x20AC;?

Afghanistan also will see support from some form of an international force in Afghanistan to provide for the continued professionalization and development of Afghan security forces, Allen said.

In the United States, a person dies by suicide every 15 minutes, totaling more than 36,000 lives lost each year. Suicides among U.S. military members have spiked this year, and according to Pentagon figures, it is the highest rate so far during a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

According to recent reports, 154 Service members committed suicide during the first 155 days of this year. In an effort to stem the tide, the Hampton Roads Survivors of Suicide Support Group is sponsoring the “Out of the Darkness” Community Walk Sept. 8, at Mount Trashmore, in Virginia Beach, Va. A team from Joint Base Langley-Eustis will join more than 3,000 others to raise awareness of the tragedy of suicide.

“The mission of the walk is to raise awareness of depression as a treatable disease, and to raise awareness of suicide as a preventable tragedy,” said Chris Gilchrist, who started the suicide support group 24 years ago. She said the proceeds from the community walk benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

AFSP is the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and

preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide.

“In all the years I’ve been involved, I’ve never come across a suicide that wasn’t preventable,” said Gilchrist. “Suicide is less a matter of wanting to end one’s life, and more a matter of ending the emotional pain associated with depression.”

U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Bryan Davidson, is the 633rd Medical Operations Squadron Psychological Health director. He is an advocate for using behavioral health resources, and assists Joint Base Langley-Eustis leadership by coordinating support agency efforts. During the suicide awareness walk, he will be serving as an on-site counselor, along with some other mental-health providers from the Tidewater area, for anyone during the walk who may want to talk or grieve in response to this difficult subject.

“The imagery of coming out of the darkness is two-fold. We are attempting to remind people that there can be hope for coming out of a dark place of depression, and reminding people not to choose suicide,” said Davidson. “The walk is also an attempt to simply bring into light this vital issue, and reduce the stigma of asking for help in times of distress.”

SUICIDE FROM PAGE 16 Davidson said there are primarily two ways Service members can curb the risk of suicide, beginning with knowing what steps to take when someone is in distress.

“We should ask them directly if they are having thoughts of suicide, show genuine concern for their welfare and escort them to the appropriate personnel who can ensure their safety,” said Davidson, adding that the second step is more in the realm of prevention.

“We are relational beings. People need to actively pursue, maintain and invest

in healthy relationships,” said Davidson.

“Also, a person’s faith or spiritual beliefs can help build these important relationships, and provide a sense of meaning and purpose that will pull them through difficult times.”

Warning signs of depression and suicide are typically not blatant, but rather subtle nuances of personal change friends and colleagues need to be aware of. Davidson said to be aware of significant changes in functioning, performance or mood in those around you.

“Broken relationships and substance abuse are also indicators of elevated threat, but it is important to note that get-

ting to know the people around you will be the primary means of detecting this change,” said Davidson. “Staying engaged with them over time and building that trust will provide the avenue for them to speak up when they are down.”

There are a wide variety of resources available to personnel at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, including Mental Health, Family Advocacy, Military and Family Life Consultants, and many more.

“There are so many resources on- and off-base for those who need help; all they have to do is reach out and make those connections. I encourage all to get the help they

need and choose to live life well,” said Davidson. “Also, if people want to join us at Mount Trashmore on the 8th, they are free to show up the day of the event. Come help us bring an end to the tragedy of suicide.”

Hampton Bay Days 2012 The 30th annual Hampton Bay Days will take place Sept. 7-9 at Mill Point Park in downtown Hampton.The festival will include merchandise, craft, and food vendors, musical entertainment, a 25-minute fireworks show, and the Chesapeake Bay Education and Children’s Area at Carousel Park.

Admission to the festival and musical entertainment is free; however, fees will be charged for crafts, games, and food and beverages. Hours are Sept. 7, noon to 11 p.m.; Sept. 8, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and Sept.

9, noon to 6 p.m. Parking will be available in the downtown area for $5 per vehicle.

Special events will include: ■ Tidewater Dock Dogs Inaugural Summer Splashdown – This event is scheduled for the entire weekend in front of the Virginia Air and Space Center on King Street. Spectators will have a chance to cheer on all team levels as canines splash down into a 28,000 gallon pool. On-line preregistration is $25 per wave and is available at www.tidewaterdockdogs.com. On-site registration is $30 per wave and will be available on a firstcome, first-serve basis.

■ Bay Days 8K – The race will begin at

the Virginia Air and Space Center on Sept.

Video Production Course Newport News Public Schools’Telecommunications Center is offering a 10-week Video Production Course in partnership with the New Horizons Center for Apprenticeship and Adult Training. The course begins Sept. 11 and will end on Dec. 4. Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Telecommunications Center, 4 Minton Dr., Newport News. The cost is $425.

Participants will learn how to use professional broadcast cameras, utilize computers and the latest industry editing software, and learn lighting and audio techniques. From pre-production to post-production, students will be engaged in learning how to properly write scripts and rundowns, and the proper use of video production equipment and nonlinear editing systems.

Day of Hope in Hampton The City of Hampton will host a Day of Hope on Sept. 11 at 8 a.m. at Gosnold’s Hope Park, 901 E. Little Back River Rd., Hampton. The public is invited to join in this special time of reflection. Following the ceremony, the names of those who were lost on Sept. 11, 2001 and service members who have died in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq will be read aloud in the

vicinity of the Trees of Hope.
