As the school season quickly approaches, children will return from the summer freedoms of the outdoors to confined, air-conditioned classrooms.

As children turn in their baseball bats and swimsuits for pencils and homework, germs can manifest on school supplies, door handles and the hands of students.

In an attempt to combat germs and bacterial infections, August is dedicated as National Immunizations Awareness Month.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, vaccines are the best defense against serious diseases. They encourage everyone, from parents of infants to the elderly to make sure that they are up to date on all recommended vaccines.

According to vaccines.gov, NIAM aims to increase awareness about immunizations across the lifespan, from infants to the elderly. According to NIAM, August marks an ideal time to ensure everyone is up-to-date on vaccines before heading back to school.

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Lucretta Cunningham, 633rd Medical Operations Squadron allergy and immunizations technician, agrees August is an important time to get vaccinated, especially children before returning to school.

“It only takes one child to get others sick,” said Cunningham. “The reason why diseases such as measles and Pertussis, or whopping cough, are coming back is because parents are failing at making sure their children are upto-date on their shots.”

In a study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, since January 1, 183 people from 24 states have contracted measles. According to the study, the majority of

people who displayed disease symptoms were unvaccinated.

Although parents ultimately decide whether or not their child receives yearly vaccinations, USAF Langley Hospital technicians emphasized the importance of remaining healthy through vaccinations.

“In my opinion, the media has played a negative factor in influencing parents to avoid vaccinations for their children; however, I cannot stress enough that remaining up-to-date on your children’s shots is very important for their health,” said Staff Sgt. Adele Dailey-Thomas, 633rd MDOS allergy and immunizations technician.

While schools require children and

teenagers to receive a series of vaccines before attending, those who defend the United States must also use vaccinations to defend their bodies.

They will be alerted of their status, via their Individual Medical Readiness Status found through the Air Force Portal.

“The best way to stay current on your vaccinations is through your personal IMR,” said Dailey-Thomas.

“Staying up-to-date on your shots is not only critical to a Service member’s health, but it is also has an effect on their deployment readiness status.”

When Service members do not remain current on their vaccinations prior to deploying, it can cause a delay on their out-processing, and in some cases, can cause their deployment date to slip.

To ensure medical readiness and prevent illness, Service members can visit the allergy and immunizations clinic between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. For more information, contact the clinic at 764-6800.

For those still unsure, Army defines ‘online misconduct’

If Soldiers were still unsure of what bad behavior looks like online, the Army clarified it for them in an “All Army Activities” message -- commonly called an ALARACT -- that went out force-wide last week.

Online misconduct, it says, is “the use of electronic communication to inflict harm. Examples include, but are not limited to: harassment, bullying, hazing, stalking, discrimination, retaliation, or any other types of misconduct that undermine dignity and respect.”

The ALARACT 122/2015, which comes as part of an effort to address Soldier use of social media and other online forms of communication, also defines good behavior online, “elec-

tronic communication,” and “onlinerelated incident.”

“The Army Values require that everyone be treated with dignity and respect,” the message reads. “Harassment, bullying, hazing, stalking, discrimination, retaliation, and any other type of misconduct that undermines dignity and respect are not consistent with Army Values and negatively impact command climate and readiness.”

The ALARACT emphasizes commanders’ responsibility to “reinforce a climate where current and future members of the Army team, including Soldiers, Army civilians, contractors, and Family members, understand that

The Third Port at Fort Eustis, Virginia is currently partnered with members of the Virginia Commonwealth University Rice River Center, to support the search for local Atlantic sturgeon through Sept. 2015.

Fort Eustis helps support the research team by allowing them to dock their boat in the port, giving them easier access to the James River.

Prior to conducting their research off of the Third Port docks the team was running their boat many miles to conduct sampling. This saves the researchers transit time and money that would have been wasted on fuel costs, said Jay DeHart, 733rd Mission Support Division harbormaster.

The team approached different members of Fort Eustis, asking for assistance with their research project.

“It is a rewarding feeling to provide support to the researchers of an endangered species that most Joint Base

Langley-Eustis, Army Mariners have no idea is literally beneath their vessels,” said DeHart. “I think it’s great that the base is trying to do its part to help with the local environment.”

The research team is searching for life history information on staging Atlantic Sturgeon, on the James River, where Third Port is located. The staging area is where the fish, which are from the Acipenseridae family, make their way after maturing or spawning before hitting adulthood and continuing their lives into the ocean.

“We are hoping to find a good amount of females during this time,” said Matt Balazik, lead researcher on project. “They are the ones that will have the better chance of defining spawning grounds, in hopes for us to help protect and enhance it.”

THIRD PORT FROM PAGE 4 will spend hours on the water attempting to catch, measure, check for prior tagging, determine the sex and tag the sturgeons.

“Fort Eustis has been able to provide us a place to dock our boat along with a staff full of information [on the James River],” said Balazik. “Not only are they helpful with their knowledge, but knowing they are just down the way while we are out on the water makes us feel a little safer. Things can happen at any moment, our boat can break down, the weather can change they are there if we need them.”

When the project started, sturgeons in the area were on track to become extinct. Now, with the amount Balazik has been catching, he said those odds are rapidly fading. Once more research is collected, the team hopes to assist the fish with their spawning areas, such as keeping it clean or providing it with items it may need.

“As long as the university is conducting research in this area, they will be welcome back to Fort Eustis’ Third Port,” said DeHart. “It would be nice to see that some of the fish they tagged this year come back over the next few years to spawn.”

New Horizons medical team supports exercise personnel and Hondurans

New Horizons Honduras 2015 training exercise medical personnel have provided medical support to exercise personnel and Hondurans since June 2015 and will continue to do so until early August.

The 15-person medical team is made up of a general surgeon, anesthesiologist, operating room nurse, emergency medicine provider, biomedical equipment technician and 10 emergency medical technicians. The team’s primary mission is to support all exercise personnel with point-of-injury immediate care before transfer to a main mobile forward surgical team.

“If someone gets injured here on the construction or well site we can provide immediate treatment to include self-aid buddy care, and IVs and intubation,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Brian Milner, 341st Medical Operations Squadron, 341st Medical Group, out of Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mo., “and once we stabilize the patient, we can transport them, via ambulance, to the hospital where they will receive follow-on care.”

While the medical team supported all New Horizons personnel, their main mission was to provide support to the U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 823rd RED HORSE Squadron from Hurlburt Field, Fla., and U.S. Marines from the 271st Marine Wing Support Squadron from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., during the construction of the new two-classroom schoolhouse in Ocotes Alto and the wells in both Honduras Aguan and Brisas del Mar. The team’s secondary mission is humanitarian in nature and has involved medical support to the Hondurans in the Dr. Salvador Paredes Hospital in downtown Trujillo in both the operating and emergency rooms.

“To date we’ve probably had about 100 surgical cases and consults and in the emergency room we’ve probably seen about 600 patients,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Norman Zellers, 60th Medical Operations Squadron, 60th Medical Group medical physician assistant, from Travis Air Force Base, Calif., “by the time we leave here we should have seen about 800 patients total.”

Zellers is in charge of the emergency room but the team’s surgeon, anesthesiologist and operating room nurse support operating room activities.

Besides medical care, the team has also been able to support the hospital in other ways by lending them the support of their biomedical equipment technician, U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Mark Lopez, 375th Medical Support Squadron out of Scott Air Force Base, Ill. “These hospitals don’t have a biomedical equipment technician, they don’t really have a facilities maintenance of management office,” said Lopez, “what they have is electrician and maintenance men and air conditioning technicians to fill in the roles to take care of the equipment...they do what they can. I’m more familiar with the more complicated systems...I can take care of anything from a simple blood pressure machine to an MRI unit and everything in between.”

Lopez’s primary mission involves supporting the operating room doctors when any of their equipment malfunctions.

“As they perform surgeries I need to be immediately next to them...in the surgery, helping out or on standby whenever the equipment experiences a failure...because they have moments when they have a patient on the table to make decisions to close them up or keep going and I’m right there as a contingency plan mostly,” added Lopez.

The hospital will also receive any leftover supplies that were delivered to support the medical personnel during the exercise.

“I’m very grateful for the New Horizons exercise,” said Dr. Salvador Paredes Hospital Director Melissa Bonegas, “I’m very glad that you have a surgeon and doctors that were able to see patients and help them out. I’m also very pleased with the communications people who were able to help out with electricity and were able to fix the internet. I’m also very grateful that we were able to donate some paint which will help better maintain the hospital.”

Communication Airmen from the 35th Combat Communications Squadron were able to repair the hospital’s ailing network, bring internet connectivity to nine offices that hadn’t service in more than three years, and improving connectivity in existing offices.

Despite their being more than 100 people involved in the New Horizons exercise, and it centering primarily around construction, the number of reported medical cases has been 140, and none of those cases has been severe enough in nature to require serious medical attention from the MFST team.

“Overall this has been a pretty calm to moderate deployment with regard to medical issues,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Keiyata Styerjames, 633rd Aeromedical Squadron independent duty medical technician out of Langley Air Force Base, Va., “I’d attribute the small number of medical issues primarily to the fact that service members are using proper protective equipment and they are pretty cautious.”

Medical team members will begin to redeploy in early August following the exercise’s official end.

New Horizons was launched in the 1980s and is an annual joint humanitarian assistance exercise that U.S. Southern Command conducts with a partner nation in Central America, South America or the Caribbean.

The exercise improves joint training readiness of U.S. and partner nation civil engineers, medical professionals and support personnel through humanitarian assistance activities.

More than 50 Service members from Joint Base Langley-Eustis and Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia, attended a Washington Redskins training camp practice at the Bon Secours Training Center in Richmond, Virginia, July 31, 2015.

The event was part of a National Football League program aimed at creating and fostering understanding and appreciation for the military community.

Upon their arrival the U.S. Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors and Marines were put to the test in a rigorous National Football Leaguestyle football combine. The competition consisted of five events: bench-press, 20yard shuttle, vertical leap, broad jump and a 40-yard dash.

More than 50 Service members from Joint Base Langley-Eustis and Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia, attended a Washington Redskins training camp practice at the Bon Secours Training Center in Richmond, Virginia, July 31, 2015.

The event was part of a National Football League program aimed at creating and fostering understanding and appreciation for the military community.

Upon their arrival the U.S. Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors and Marines were put to the test in a rigorous National Football Leaguestyle football combine. The competition consisted of five events: bench-press, 20yard shuttle, vertical leap, broad jump and a 40-yard dash.

The Senate last week confirmed Air Force Gen. Paul J. Selva as the 10th vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The nation’s second-highest-ranking military officer is a pilot and most recently was commander of U.S. Transportation Command at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.

Also last week, the Senate confirmed Marine Corps Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr. as chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Defense Secretary Ash Carter congratulated both leaders in a July 31 statement.

Strategic Perspective Carter said both men had proved “their mettle throughout their careers, from Gen. Dunford’s first years as an infantryman to his leadership both in Afghanistan and of the Marine Corps, and from Gen. Selva’s early days as a pilot to his leadership of our military’s Transportation Command.”

The secretary added, “I know that President [Barack] Obama and I, and our nation’s security, will benefit greatly from their sage counsel and strategic perspective gained over years of operational experience.”

Selva is a command pilot with more than 3,100 hours in the C-5, KC-135A and other aircraft. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering in 1980 from the U.S. Air Force Academy and later earned Master of Science degrees in management and human relations and in political science.

ABOUT GENERAL PAUL J. SELVA Gen. Paul J. Selva serves as the 10th Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In this capacity, he is a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the nation’s second highest-ranking military officer.

General Selva graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1980, and completed undergraduate pilot training at Reese AFB, Texas. He has held numerous staff positions and has commanded at the squadron, group, wing and headquarters levels. In March, the Armyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chief of staff directed the creation of a â&#x20AC;&#x153;tiger teamâ&#x20AC;? to address the issue of online misbehavior, including retribution, and to ďŹ nd ways to prevent and respond to harm inďŹ&#x201A;icted through the use of electronic communication.

One goal of the tiger team was to create a reporting system for â&#x20AC;&#x153;online-related incidentsâ&#x20AC;? and report those up to senior Army leadership.

Tiger team member Lt. Col. Kay Emerson, who also serves as director of the Armyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Equal Opportunity policy ofďŹ ce, said members of the Army staff and command representatives are working now to identify the data ďŹ elds and reporting requirements for such an online reporting system. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Once collated, senior Army leadership will have a sight picture of reported online-related incidents and actions taken by commanders in the ďŹ eld,â&#x20AC;? Emerson said.

The Army is expected to update AR 600-20 in the next published version to address online and social media violations. Emerson said she is currently re-rewriting paragraph 4-19 within AR 600-20 to incorporate the Department of Defenseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s drafted policy with the Armyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

Section 4-19 of AR 600-20, called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Treatment of persons,â&#x20AC;? addresses hazing and bullying, as well as command and individual responsibilities in regards to them. Both the regulation and the ALARACT direct Soldiers and Army civilians who experience or witness online misconduct to report it to their chain of command.

Additionally, section 4-19 of AR 600-20 is â&#x20AC;&#x153;punitiveâ&#x20AC;? in nature. It authorizes commanders to potentially punish those who are in violation of its direction, making failure to adhere to the Armyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rules for online behavior a punishable offense. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Soldiers who violate this policy may be subject to punishment under the UCMJ [Uniform Code of Military Justice],â&#x20AC;? the regulation reads. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whether or not certain acts speciďŹ cally violate the provisions of this paragraph, they may be inappropriate or violate relevant civilian personnel guidance.â&#x20AC;?

Despite new rules and direction in regard to use of social media and other forms of electronic communication, the Army says it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to stop Solders from communicating online. Instead, said an Army ofďŹ cial, when using electronic communication devices, Soldiers should apply â&#x20AC;&#x153;Think, Type, Post.â&#x20AC;?

Motorcycle rider courses The 633rd ABW Safety Office is offering the following motorcycle courses on Fort Eustis: Experienced Riders Course (BRC-2) –Aug. 26, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Training Area 14-A, 3300 Wilson Ave. Advanced Riders Course (ARC) –Aug. 18, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 705 Washington Blvd., room 106.

Motorcycle rider courses are offered to active-duty Service members on a first-priority basis. Family members, retirees, Department of Defense civilians and contractors will be scheduled on a standby basis only. The courses are provided at no cost to qualified participants.

To attend these courses, you must have previously completed the Beginner Riders Course (BRC), be a properly licensed rider, have your own motorcycle, a valid state inspection, registration, insurance and you wear the proper personal protection equipment.

JBLE Family Child Care Program If you are looking for a professional, portable career that will allow you to stay at home with your children and run your own home-based business, then becoming a child care provider may be a good fit for you. The Joint Base Langley-Eustis Family Child Care Program screens child care providers who watch children in their homes.

The program is available for children ages two weeks to 12 years old. Child care providers must be at least 18 years old, be able to read and speak English, be in good health and willing to undergo a background check.

The FCC will provide training and materials to get your business started. Training may include first aid, CPR, health, safety, developmentally appropriate practices and child guidance. All individuals providing child care in their home for more than 10 hours a week must be licensed. World War II veterans ceremony

The Virginia Department of Taxation’s Combined Sales Tax Holiday will take place Aug. 7 through 9. Consumers may purchase portable generators, gas-powered chainsaws and accessories, other hurricane preparedness items, clothing, footwear, school supplies and EnergyStar or WaterSense-designated items. Each item must be priced below the maximum sales price and meet other requirements set forth in the Virginia statutes. Qualifying items also include computer supplies priced at $20 or less per item such as computer storage media and printer paper, and all light bulbs affixed with the Energy-Star label.

Late summer Planetarium Shows – Visitors can choose among four shows at the Abbitt Planetarium from Aug. 1 through Sept. 7. Children can learn about weather on the planets in “Zula Patrol” at 11:30 a.m. Explore the mysterious world of the former smallest planets in “The Pluto Show” at 12:30 p.m. A staff astronomer takes a tour of the current night sky in “Virginia Skies” at 1:30 p.m. Discover the world of amphibians living in our backyards in “Noisy Neighbors: A Frog Story” at 2:30 p.m. “ElectroPop” combines pop artists with awesome lasers at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $4 in addition to museum admission.

Story Time at the Museum – The third Saturday of the month is story time at the museum. Children are invited at 10 a.m., Aug. 15 to hear a nature-related story. This event is recommended for ages 2 and older and is included in museum admission.

The Virginia Living Museum is located at 524 J. Clyde Morris Boulevard in Newport News. Admission is $17 for adults, $13 for children ages 3-12 and free for members and children ages 2 and under. To honor America’s WWII veterans on the 70th anniversary of the end of the war, the “Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive” ceremony will take place at 10 a.m., Aug. 15 at the Hampton National Cemetery (intersection of Cemetery Road and Marshall Ave. The event is free and open to the public and will take place rain or shine. Hampton Cup Regatta The 90th Hampton Cup regatta will be held Aug. 8 and 9 at the East Mercury Bridge at Fort Monroe. The event is free and open to the public and races will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. No pets, coolers, balls, Frisbees, skateboards or skates will be allowed in the event area.

Positive Discipline for Preschoolers workshop The Hampton Healthy Families Partnership will host a Positive Discipline for Babies workshop from 6 to 8 p.m., Aug. 10 and 11 at 100 Old Hampton Lane in Hampton. Kayaking, canoeing at Queen’s Creek Visitors can bring their own kayaks or canoes to New Quarter Park Aug. 15, for a roundtrip paddle on Queen’s Creek. World War II children’s camps The Virginia War Museum will host “Sicily 1943,” a World War II children’s camp at 9285 Warwick Boulevard in Newport News. The interactive camps are open to children ages 8 to 12 years old and will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Aug. 17 through 20. The cost is $200. Campers will train in squads and learn WWII infantry tactics during two battles each day. In between battles, campers will receive instruction on uniforms, equipment and the history of WWII. This is a physically active camp and children are expected to run, jump and play outdoors in the woods.
