To honor the 50-year anniversary of the Vietnam War, U.S. Service members hosted Vietnam commemoration at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, May 18-20, 2016.

Across the two installations, the week of remembrance held events including a demonstration of wound care advancements since the Vietnam era, a veteran commemoration ceremony and luncheon, and a National Defenders’ Vietnam Memorial ride In 2012, President Obama established the commemoration as a 13year program to honor veterans, each year that the U.S. was involved in the Vietnam War. “The purpose of our ceremony is

to thank and honor our Vietnam veterans,” said Miller. “For their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States.”

During the commemoration ceremony, retired Capt. William Robinson, the longest-held enlisted POW in U.S. history, shared some of his experience while serving in the military his time spent in captivity.

After several assignments in the U.S. and a year in Korea, the then-Airman 1st Class Robinson was assigned to an Air Rescue and Recovery Unit in Thailand in 1965. While on a rescue mission in September of that year, he and his crew were shot down and captured in North Vietnam during an attempt to save a downed pilot.

“What if like a dream, your freedom disappeared,” said Robinson.

“That’s what happened to me.”

In a matter of minutes, Robinson explained how he witnessed miracles in the wake of the devastation.

“I couldn’t explain how I walked away after falling from a plane 90 feet from above,” said Robinson. “Or how I didn’t [really] have any scratches, or how I wasn’t executed on the spot.”

He spent seven and a half years in North Vietnam until his release in 1973.

“Could you imagine? ,” said Robinson. “...I looked at a door that did not have an inside knob.”

“It is indeed an honor to be here today to share a few minutes,” said Robinson. “And especially for those who wear the uniform today, thank you, for the freedoms that I and America enjoy because of your dedicated duty to our country.”

JBLE plans to honor Vietnam veterans and their families annually by hosting the event for the next 15 years, and will alternate locations between Fort Eustis and Langley Air Force Base.

“Memorial Day is a time to honor our veterans,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Caroline Miller, commander of the 633rd Air Base Wing. “So we chose May to hold our Vietnam Commemoration here at Langley.”

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, 9 million Americans served on active duty in the Armed Forces during the period of the Vietnam War; 7 million are still alive today.

Preparing JBLE for swimming in the summer months

As the summer months approach, U.S. Service members assigned to Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, may look forward to enjoying the waters in the surrounding area.

Military personnel and community members are reminded during Healthy and Safe Swimming Week, May 23-29, to keep proper swimming pool procedures and rules in mind to ensure everyone remains safe during the summer season.

Life Aquatics and JBLE have teamed up to keep Service members and their families safe.

“We make sure there are no hazards around the water such as vacuums, cords and electrical hazards,â€? said Janisa Pearson, assistant manager for Life Aquatics and life guard at Shellbank Fitness Center. “We also ensure there are proper oatation devices available and a guard present in the pool area at all times. Guards ensure all pool rules are followed and are available for medical purposes, especially for the pediatric and geriatric visitors.â€?

The life guards at the Shellbank Fitness Center are all Red Cross and ďŹ rst aid certiďŹ ed and are able to handle medical or water contamination issues that may occur, said Pearson.

On JBLE, the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron handles any contamination that occurs at the pools. The Airmen perform tests to determine the proper course of action and then use chemicals to sanitize the water.

Along with identifying medical or contamination issues, the lifeguards at Shellbank are responsible for ensuring the 109-person capacity is not exceeded and proper safety equipment is being used. “For children, wearing [diapers] that are designed to not weigh the child down is important,� said Pearson. “Make sure the child can swim and if they cannot, ensure they can touch [the bottom of the pool]. Also, if the child

doesn’t want to be in the water, don’t force them because it could cause them to fear swimming later in life.�

For those families who have a private pool of their own, some hazards to be cautious of are possible toys left in the pool which can lure children to the water, ladders or easily accessible gates. These three hazards could cause an accident to happen, said Pearson.

Some hazards that can be overlooked are hydration, sunscreen, ensuring someone is aware of medication being taken and alcohol consumption while swimming, said Pearson.

SOUTHWEST ASIA — U.S. and coalition military forces continued to attack Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant terrorists in Iraq and Syria yesterday, Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve ofďŹ cials reported.

OfďŹ cials reported details of the latest strikes, noting that assessments of results are based on initial reports.

Strikes in Syria Attack and ground attack aircraft conducted two strikes in Syria: â– Near Ayn Isa, a strike destroyed an ISIL ďŹ ghting position. â– Near Mara, a strike destroyed an ISIL vehicle and an ISIL mortar system.

Strikes in Iraq Bomber, ďŹ ghter and remotely piloted aircraft and rocket artillery conducted 18 strikes in Iraq, coordinated with and in support of Iraq’s government: â– Near Baghdadi, a strike destroyed an ISIL mortar position. â– Near Beiji, a strike struck an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed an ISIL mortar system. â– Near Fallujah, three strikes struck

Task force ofďŹ cials deďŹ ne a strike as one or more kinetic events that occur in roughly the same geographic location to produce a single, sometimes cumulative, effect. Therefore, ofďŹ cials explained, a single aircraft delivering a single weapon against a lone ISIL vehicle is one strike, but so is multiple aircraft delivering dozens of weapons against buildings, vehicles and weapon systems in a compound, for example, having the cumulative

effect of making those targets harder or impossible for ISIL to use. Accordingly, ofďŹ cials said, they do not report the number or type of aircraft employed in a strike, the number of munitions dropped in each strike, or the number of individual munition impact points against a target.

Part of Operation Inherent Resolve The strikes were conducted as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the operation to eliminate the ISIL terrorist group and the threat they pose to Iraq, Syria, and the wider international community. The destruction of ISIL targets in Syria and Iraq further limits the terrorist group’s ability to project terror and conduct operations, ofďŹ cials said.

Coalition nations that have conducted strikes in Iraq include the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Jordan, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Soldier Aims for Slot on Paralympics Team

WASHINGTON — As the crowd goes silent, the soldier steadies her breath, draws her bow, takes aim and releases her arrow, confident of her shot.

Army Spc. Chasity Kuczer, a reservist assigned to the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Knox, Kentucky, took silver in the individual open compound class at the Invictus Games in Orlando, Florida, May 9. During the finals, she matched medically retired Canadian Cpl. Luc Rolland Joseph Martin arrow-for-arrow in two sets.

“It was absolutely insane walking out in the arena the first time,” said Kuczer, who is also a member of the USA Archery team. “I had no idea what to expect. But like I practice for archery, I blocked everything out. When I was shooting, it was just me, my bow and my arrows, and the target. I stayed as calm as I could and focused. I took each shot one arrow at a time.”

She said it was great to stay ar-

row for arrow with her competitor because he is a well-experienced archer. “Unfortunately, … I fell behind,” she said. Kuczer hit two 9s and an 8, while Martin hit two 10s and a 9 -- 10 being the center ring of the target.

“I’m still very proud of my accomplishment,” she said. “I gave him a run for his money. I enjoyed the experience; I had fun, and I wouldn’t trade that for the world.”

Team Match Kuczer didn’t have to wait long before matching up against Martin again. They faced off in the final round of the team compound, as the U.S. and Canadian teams were locked in a tie.

“By the time we went out there, we were all exhausted, but the adrenaline rush woke us up,” she said. “I had already shot out there so the initial nerves were gone.

While my teammates were shooting, I would tell them the time we had left, and I would tell them, ‘Relax, you’ve got this.’”

Canada’s archers went first and shot all 9s.

“I was the first to shoot [after the Canadians],” Kuczer said, “so I pulled up and focused on that 10 ring, released and almost shot a dead center 10! It was amazing, and my team followed me with great shoots. … As a team we did great.

We worked together and had fun.”

The U.S. team took the gold, and Canada took silver in the team compound.

Kuczer said she was so tuned out during the matches that she had to go back and watch them on television. “I had no idea what was going on around me while I was shooting,” she said. “I’m happy with how I competed. I was up against some great archers. Being at such a highprofile shoot is completely new to me. I’m completely floored with how the team rounds went. My teammates shot excellently.”

Kuczer said she is honored to have represented the U.S. team at the Invictus Games. “It was an amazing feeling, not only representing the U.S., but also in proving to other women that we can compete with the men,” she said. “Afterward, I had some parents with little girls who wanted to get pictures with me.

ParalympicTrials Kuczer, a former locomotive mechanic who has a bilateral labral tear, nerve damage, sciatica and problems with her hips and lower back, went straight from the Invictus Games to the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California, for the second leg of the Paralympic trials for archery.

“The USA Archery team is a big family,” she said. “We pick on each other, but we have a strong bond. We support and help each other. The glue holding us together is great coaches who would bend over backwards to help us. Most of them are former Invictus Games or Warrior Games athletes who understand what we’re going through.”

After the second Paralympic trials, Kuczer is still the top-ranked women’s open compound para-archer in the U.S.

She will be competing in the Czech Republic in June to try to earn a slot in the Paralympics, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro in September.

“In the Czech Republic, I must earn either an individual or team slot to have any chance to go to the Paralympics,” she said. “Then I have to place first in the third Para trials to be able to go. I am feeling good about my abilities. I have been practicing and training very hard.”

Kuczer said the Invictus Games, Paralympics and the Department of Defense Warrior Games are more than just competing.

“Activities like these do amazing things mentally and physically for wounded and ill soldiers. It gives them their lives back. Adaptive sports save lives; they show wounded and ill soldiers that they can still do things. It’s all about overcoming, adapting and feeling normal,” she said. “As for me, I’m honored to have represented the U.S. I’m proud of my accomplishments competing in the Invictus Games. Those were the icing on the cake to an already amazing experience.”

Trespass Notice The Langley small arms firing range, adjacent area and the bullet impact area to the rear of the range are off limits to all personnel. Patient Referral Due to an issue with the database that stores specialty care referrals, some patient referrals were temporarily deleted from the system. Virginia War Museum Artifacts Roadshow The Virginia War Museum will host an Artifacts Roadshow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 4, at 9285 Warwick Boulevard in Newport News. Great American Cleanup volunteers needed The York County Waste Management office is seeking volunteers to assist in the 2016 Great American Cleanup. Roadside cleanup crews will be organized to target Denbigh Boulevard, Fort Eustis Boulevard, Wolftrap Road and Cook Road. Volunteers are welcome to organize their own groups to clean up other county roadsides of their choice. Residents can also organize cleanups through their homeowner associations and other civic groups.

Volunteer groups can schedule community cleanup dates and the Waste Management office will provide supplies and arrange for pickup/disposal of collected materials.The event will conclude with Clean the Bay Day on June 4.
