The Army’s ďŹ ghting forces change shape and shift on a constant basis. As the needs of the military adapt to the ever-changing combat climate, units activate, re-ag, deploy, redeploy and inactivate. Every time a unit permanently cases their colors, it is a time to remember and celebrate a rich history.

The 24th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade cased their colors during an inactivation ceremony at Fort Eustis’ 3rd Port, May 14.

The inactivation of the battalion was celebrated in traditional Army fashion. U.S. Army Lt. Col. Layton Dunbar and Command Sgt. Maj. Jade James, the 24th Trans.

Bn. commander and command sergeant major, respectively, cased the unit’s colors, symbolizing the battalion’s inactivation until needed again for military service.

The 24th Trans. Bn., ‘Leaders,’ consisted of the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 56st1 Inland Cargo Transfer Company, 331st Transportation Company, 335th Transportation Detachment, 1098th Transportation Detachment and 492nd Transportation Detachment. The battalion

has a rich history of military service defending the nation during a multitude of conicts, said Col. Lawrence Kominiak, the 7th Sus. Bde. commander. “This battalion has been inactivated and activated several time in its long history,â€?

Kominiak said. “Undoubtedly, at some point, the great 24th Transportation Battalion will once again answer the call and be called back into our nation’s service.�

The ‘Leaders’ battalion history mirrors the nation’s, as they served in World War II, Vietnam, Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield, Operation Restore Hope in Rwanda, Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti, Operation Iraqi Freedom and

Operation Enduring Freedom. The battalion also provided support to multiple joint and coalition training and support events such as Joint Logistics Over the Shore in Morocco and resupplying the National Science Foundation in Antarctica.

Before closing the ceremony, Dunbar took the opportunity to address his battalion one last time. “Everything we accomplish is done as a team, and I could not have asked for better than the Soldiers assembled before me,� said Dunbar. “Nothing makes me prouder than seeing what we have accomplished through our teamwork. The legacy of this unit and these Soldiers will live on.�

COMMENTARY FROM PAGE 2 ■Stewardship – We are the stewards of our people. The parents of our youngest Airmen have entrusted their lives to us. Imagine giving your child over to someone, blindly trusting that they will look out for your child’s best interests.

We need to care for our people as if they were our own children. Yet this, by any stretch of the imagination, does not mean we treat them like children. ■Commitment to the Growth of People – People are more valuable than just the work they do for us in the Air Force. They have personal, spiritual, and professional value. We need to make it our priority to do everything we can in recognize that value, cultivate, and grow it. They will be better people for it, and will work harder for you.

I challenge the notion that the only Airmen who are yours are the Airmen who work directly for you.

Every time you meet someone, you have an opportunity to mentor, guide and advise. You WILL have an impact on the people you come in contact with.

That impact will either be a positive or negative one, and it is our duty as leaders to ensure we have a positive impact on as many people as possible. Senior NCOs know that we are charged with giving guidance to our commanders based on our judgment, experience and training.

What we tend to forget, however, is that the judgment, experience and training we’ve acquired through years (sometimes decades) wearing the uniform of an Airman is just as important to the Airmen underneath us as it is to our commanders. By employing some of the techniques of servant leadership, we can all be more effective leaders, and can make the Air Force an even better place than it is now.

I’ll conclude this article with a short piece of advice. Treat EVERYONE you come across as if they WERE one of the Airmen whose performance report you write. I promise they’ll be happier Airmen, they’ll do a better job, and you’ll also be a better NCO, senior NCO or ofďŹ cer for it!

Our nation is comprised of many ethnic groups from around the world.

As a result, our military is equally comprised of diverse group of people, and this month. Fort Eustis kicked off Asian-PaciďŹ c American Heritage Month May 8 at Murphy Field.

The Asian-PaciďŹ c American Heritage month observance was sponsored by McDonald Army Health Center. Soldiers, Airman, civilian employees and family members packed the bleachers to enjoy a rich legacy of Asian-PaciďŹ c culture.

Attendees experienced a Filipino martial arts presentation, traditional Thai and Hawaiian dance performances, a fashion show and an assortedstyle Asian buffet. This year’s theme: “Diversity, Leadership, Empowerment and Beyond� focused on Asian-Pacific American’s contributions to the military, and the United States.

Those who came out to Murphy Field to show their support expressed their appreciation for Asian-PaciďŹ c American Heritage. “A celebration like this is always a great experience and exchange of information,â€? said Courtney Abrams. A retired Navy command master chief petty ofďŹ cer, Abrams was no stranger to PaciďŹ c traditions. “I had the pleasure of serving in Japan, and we really celebrated events like this. Personally, I think they have a wonderful culture, and it’s very im-

portant that we continue acknowledge it, as well as other cultures.�

According to Sgt. 1st Class Annquarnette Aaron, MCAHC primary equal employment opportunity ofďŹ cer, the hope is for this event to continue to bring about awareness and unity at Fort Eustis. “Observances like this are very special because we can always learn from each others’ culture and experience the history, music and food as well,â€? she said. “Our diversity in the military brings us together in unity and service.

So each year we want to continue to encourage the Eustis community to come out and support cultural events like this.�

Entertaining event highlights included cultural dancing and traditional music. Amy Miller, and her daughter Tiffany, demonstrated several Hawaiian dances, and the Thai Association of Hampton Roads members performed a ceremonial dance of peace. They also showcased some of their authentic Thai fashions during a fashion show.

Guest even enjoyed “combative entertainment� from the Warrior Village Academy, who performed Filipino Martial Arts. The observance celebration concluded with various Asian food samples and a buffet.

TRADOC Instructors of the Year announced

Seven Soldiers and civilians from U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command were recognized as Instructors of the Year and presented awards by Gen. Robert W. Cone, TRADOC’s commanding general during the fourth Annual Army Learning Summit May 3 at the TRADOC Headquarters on Fort Eustis.

Cone, who handed out Instructor of the Year plaques and TRADOC coins during the ceremony, said he was impressed with the accomplishments of this year’s recipients and thanked them for their effort and dedication in teaching future leaders.

The National Guard’s TRADOC Instructor of the Year, Staff Sgt. Jericho Ingold was honored to receive the recognition. “I have never been selected to receive such a prestigious award,” said Ingold.

“I have been Instructor of the Cycle, and Soldier of the Quarter, but to know that I was selected to represent the NGB category is pretty awesome.”

Instructors are judged on their tactical and technical knowledge, communication skills, appearance and military bearing. Their contributions to training-literature development, research and article publication are also considered.

TRADOC created the Instructor of the Year program in 1989, and current Instructor of the Year program manager, Renee Escoffery-Torres, has been at the helm of this program for more than a decade.

She challenged the winners during the ceremony to continue to push Soldiers and civilians to go above and beyond as they develop future leaders.

“I hope you realize not only the importance of your role as instructors and educators, but I hope you recognize the magnificence of making a difference in the lives of Soldiers and civilians you teach,” said Escoffery-Torres.

“Anyone can mindlessly flip through a slide presentation and recite a lesson plan word for word,” said Kennedy. “We have to study harder and know more than our students. If we find ourselves in a situation where a student has more experience on a particular subject, we have to exploit that opportunity and allow the student to train their peers and instructors.”

Developing Army leaders is a core TRADOC initiative and an important component in the organization’s effort towards designing the Army of 2020.

“Leadership to me is providing a good example in your actions and candidly providing guidance and mentorship to peers and subordinates alike,” said Bardo.

Four members of Fort Eustis’ Fire Department put their technical rescue skills to the test alongside the region’s finest at the 2012 Virginia State Rescue Challenge May 6 - 10 in Central Virginia.

The rigorous, week-long crucible tested the abilities of technical rescue operators from across Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Ft. Eustis’ quartet joined forces with the 911th Engineer Company from Fort Belvoir, Va., to form a 16-person team, the smallest of the 28 teams participating.

According to Mike Collius, Felker Army Airfield fire station chief and participant at the challenge, the teams completed scenarios including high-angle rope rescue, confined space rescue, vehicle passenger extraction and rescue, and building collapse rescues, among others.

One scenario saw operators rescue a King’s Dominion amusement park maintenance technician that had fallen from the roller coaster track during a pre-ride inspection. The team had to deploy “high lines” to the stranded technician and extract him from the ride before he fell. Another scenario sent the team into a tornado-ravaged area ripe with hazards and victims, including a damaged radio tower, victims stranded in a lake, and passengers trapped in vehicles crushed by shipping containers.

Jason Percy, a Eustis-based firefighter also on the team, said the events were designed to be “worst-case scenarios.” “[The facilitators] wanted to make these rescues as difficult as possible,” he said.

ations. We were being critiqued the entire time, and safety is critical.”

“No two fires are the same, and no two rescues are the same. There are always variables,” Collius explained. “Of the five different modules, the facilitators can twist these scenarios any way they want, and often do.”

“This isn’t where you come to train; this is where you come to execute what you’ve been trained to do,” he added.

While there was no winner crowned in any sort of competition, Collius said his team performed “extremely well,” and was prepared for the challenges they faced.

“We impressed the folks there. We finished all but one our scenarios, and with plenty of time to spare,” he said.

Collius added that the rescuers were told to be prepared to respond should a real emergency occur.

“If something happened while we were training, they wanted to pull us out and have us go real-world,” he said. “They were that confident in us.”

Collius and Percy said qualified technical rescue operators are rare due to the cost and difficulty of training. As a result, the Rescue Challenge presented a excellent opportunity to network with other professionals and learn new techniques and tools of the trade to take back with them.

“You learn new tricks seeing the different ways people do things,” Percy said.

“We saw the kinds of equipment they used [at the challenge] last year, came back and ordered that equipment. We were able to see what our strengths and needs are.”

“You walk in with a little toolbox, and you know what do by the book,” Collius added.

“When you leave, your toolbox ix a lot bigger. Every year I learn something new.”

It was a warm evening, and the sun had not yet set below the horizon as a car idled at the intersection of Victory Boulevard and Kiln Creek Parkway in Yorktown, Va., May 2.

Inside, the driver: Staff Sgt. Luis Ortiz, 633rd Inpatient Operations Squadron NCO in charge of the birthing center, waited patiently for the light to turn green.

Out of the corner of his eye he saw a car rolling slowly toward the intersection, its path blocked by another vehicle. Suddenly, the two cars collided.

“It wasn’t a hard impact,” Ortiz said, recalling the events of that night. “I saw people running over, and instantly thought I should get out and help.”

As Ortiz ran to the crash he noticed the driver of the struck vehicle was uninjured. However, the other driver, later identified as Gustavo Diaz, a native of Newport News, Va., was completely unresponsive. With Diaz still in the car, Ortiz began the life-saving procedures he learned as medic in the Air Force.

“I checked for breathing and pulse,” Ortiz said, using his hands to reenact the steps he took. “He didn’t have a pulse, so I started CPR.” Ortiz said Diaz gasped for air after the first rescue breath. Thinking he was choking, Ortiz rolled Diaz on his side, but he remained unconscious and without a pulse. Enlisting the assistance of another bystander, Ortiz freed Diaz from the car before continuing CPR. For nearly ten minutes, Ortiz repeated the steps to revive Diaz. However, nothing seemed to work. It was then that Deputy Eric Hart, of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, arrived on scene.

Hart said. “It was definitely a life-threatening situation, so I deployed the AED.” The automated external defibrillator is a device designed to shock the heart into a normal rhythm. Hart placed the pads on the skin of Diaz’s chest and side, charged the machine and pressed the button.

Nothing.

Both Hart and Ortiz continued CPR as the AED charged again. When it was ready, Hart pressed the button, hoping for the best.

“It was kind of hard to explain,” Diaz

later said from his room at Riverside Regional Hospital, where he is currently recuperating. “I don’t remember a lot. One moment I’m driving down the road, the next I’m being revived by Deputy Hart and Sergeant Ortiz.”

Diaz said as quickly as he had woken up, he lost consciousness again. The next time he woke up was in the hospital.

“They said it was something like a heart attack,” Diaz said. “My heart just went out. When I woke up, I was in the hospital wondering how I got there.”

Looking back, Diaz said he owes his life to Ortiz and Hart.

“Thank God,” he said, choking up.

“They were angels. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here right now. They saved my life – both of them.”

Ortiz smiled when he thought about the man whose life he saved.

“It’s a great feeling,” Ortiz said. “Someone’s dad or brother is alive because of something I did. I was exhausted and very nervous through the whole thing.

But, after it was over, I had this great sense of achievement. It made me really proud to be a medic.”

He laughed, leaning back in his chair, breathing a sigh of relief.

“Office training days will never be the same for me,” Ortiz said. “You never know when it might happen for real.”

The fact that Ortiz was able to instantly recall his medical training, and use it when the moment counted comes as a blessing to Diaz.

“I’m alive,” said Diaz. “It makes me appreciate things more. Sometimes, when we get so tied up in life, we take things for granted. This has been a blessing in disguise for me. I won’t take anything for granted anymore.”

Diaz paused again as he attempted to compose himself. His brush with death taught him to slow down, and think about what is truly important in life. It also made him extremely thankful for the Air Force staff sergeant who decided to not drive away from the scene of an accident, but to get out and see if he could help.

“It showed me there are still good people left in the world.”

It’s time to get out from under fluorescent office lights for 20+ minutes of bronzing, while also obtaining a daily dose of Vitamin D. 2. An opportunity to “speed” date. With just more than three miles of pavement, you have ample time to meet that special someone. If you hit it off, you have a running buddy. If you don’t, kick it into sprint mode and try again. By the time you run through the shoot, you have either met your solemate (pun intended) or left several people in your dust.

or to gain enough points to win the match,” said Romero. “In the finals, kicks, close body punches and openpalm slaps to the head and face will be allowed and counted for points.”

Fights lasted anywhere from one minute to three six-minute rounds, depending on how quickly one fighter could submit the other. In the early rounds, all but 21 competitors were eliminated.

“I really didn’t come out to the competitionto win. Ijustwantedthechance to match myself against some of the other fighters and see where I stood,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Christopher Payne, a 7th Sus. Bde. medic, who did not make it to the finals. “The competition here was excellent, and the fighters I went up against were very talented. I had a great time.”

After the preliminary rounds, the fighters had a 30-minute break to rest and prepare themselves for the finals. Three competitors from each weight class would endure harder conditions and contend with the new striking rules in order to have a chance to earn their gold medals.

Fighting attitudes in the room began to change as some tried to fight fast and fierce to beat their competition quickly, while others showed a more hesitant approach to conserve energy and avoid mistakes.

“One of the rules we have in this

competition is the fighters must actively engage at all times,” said Romero. “If we see them just standing off or not fighting so they can conserve energy, we stop the fight, and they can even lose points.”

At the end of the competition, each fighter was awarded their respective medals and many of them even chatted with each other after the fights.

They file into the open gym, three fighting mats set up around the room with judges tables near each.

They begin to stretch, don the proper gear, listen to the rules and mentally prepare themselves for what is to come. The annual competition to show the warrior spirit in each one of them is about to begin.

The 10th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade hosted the annual Fort Eustis Combatives Tournament at the McLellan Fitness Center, May 12.

Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Department of Defense civilians registered for the competition the day before at the Fort Eustis Combatives Academy. After filling out their registration paperwork, they were weighed, placed into one of seven weight categories and assessed by a Special Troops Battalion, 7th Sus. Bde. medic to ensure they were in proper health for the competition. Forty-three competitors signed up in all.

“This is going to be a great competition,” said U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Luis Romero, the Fort Eustis Combatives Academy head instructor. “We have a lot of great competitors which means there will be a good amount of competition in each weight class.

This serves as a good chance for the Soldiers here at the Combatives Academy to apply what they have learned and test their skills against other fighters in their weight class.”

Before the competition began, the fighters were shown the various holds and chokes that would earn them points in their matches. Each competitor in the bantamweight, welterweight, cruiserweight, lightweight, middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight categories had to lose two matches to be out of the tournament. As each fighter progressed in the brackets, the rules got harder.

Workshop opens career doors for military spouses at Eustis

Military spouses from the Fort Eustis community took part in a Military Spouse Employment Partnership workshop at the Army Community Service building May 9, discovering how the program can open doors to employment opportunities.

The event featured MSEP representatives explaining the scope of the program, as well as recruiters from several area firms seeking military spouses to fill positions within their organizations.

“If you’re looking for something parttime, we have that. If you’re looking for something at home, we have that. If you’re looking for something at an executive level, we have that, too,” said Fonta Footman-Mitchell, the MSEP deputy program manager. “We are doing our due diligence to ensure our military spouse community has access to these vetted organizations that are working to give them the opportunities they deserve.”

MSEP is a targeted recruitment and employment solution for spouses and companies that partners Fortune 500 Plus companies with all branches of the armed forces to provide human resource

managers with recruitment solutions by way of qualified military spouses. The program prepares military spouses to become competitive applicants ready to enter the workforce, and connects the spouses with employers.

According to Footman-Mitchell, companies participating in the partnership make the following commitments: ■ Increase employment opportunities for military spouses, while maintaining employment for relocating spouses.

Airmen and families have a new resource at their ďŹ ngertips with the recent release of an updated and revised social media guide by the Air Force Public Affairs Agency in San Antonio, Texas.

The guide features sections geared toward all Total Force members and their families as well as Air Force leaders. It highlights topics including using social media effectively, security awareness, social media platforms, public affairs programs and social media policy among others. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our social media team has made great strides in updating this guide,â&#x20AC;? said Larry Clavette, Air Force Public Affairs Agency director. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Airmen and families will see a lot of information they can apply to their social networking practices, whether theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been using social media for years or are just coming onboard with the technology.â&#x20AC;?

While information on social media has been around for several years, the types of platforms people use evolve and new ones start up nearly every day. No matter which

social media platform you use, and whether you use social media personally or professionally, many basic principles apply.

Operations security ranks ďŹ rst and foremost in the minds of many military members, but the casual nature of social media can easily lead to inadvertent sharing of sensitive personal information via personal proďŹ les and accounts. Everyone should make sure they share personal information only with people they trust and understand that no matter how secure they set up their own accounts friends can unintentionally share details about their lives with people who may have malicious intentions.

Though the desire to protect personal information is one reason people may not join social media platforms, unfamiliarity with the platforms is another commonly cited reason for staying out of the social media arena.

“When I arrived at Langley in October of 2011 there wasn’t Crossfit program currently active,” Delacruz said.

“My commander came to me and asked if I would start a program along with the help of Staff Sgt. Victor Cruz.”

Together we started the Crossfit gym known as “Raptor Crossfit” at Langley and we are recognized by Crossfit.com and the entire Crossfit community.

“Our sessions run for three months,” Delacruz said. “Each workout lasts anywhere from three to 20 minutes, depending on where you’re at.”

According to Delacruz, the overall goal of the Crossfit program is to increase both physical and physiological tolerance so individuals are able to handle anything that is thrown their way.

“The thing that’s nice about Crossfit is that anyone at any age can do it,” said Cruz, Air Combat Command installation and mission support NCO in charge of knowledge

Exercise is a way of life for those in the United States military. Airmen with the 633rd Force Support Squadron have taken it to the next level with their use of a workout program known as “CrossFit.” CrossFit is one of the principal strength and conditioning programs used in police academies, tactical operations teams, military special-operations units, champion martial artists, and by hundreds of professional athletes. It’s also becoming widely popular on military instillations world-wide.

The program features intense exercises like plyometric jumps, and Olympic lifts that use non-traditional weights like sand-bags, suspension systems and water-filled implements to complete their exercises. The goal is to do as many reps as possible in a set amount of time.

operations. “We take everyday movements and scale it to accommodate everyone.”

Through this program many changes have been seen throughout the FSS, including that of Airman 1st Class Snezhara Dille, 633rd FSS career development technician, who recently completed a threemonth session.

“Crossfit helped me build my upper body strength which allowed me to come within one or two of maxing out my pushups and sit-ups during my last physical fitness test,” Dille said. “I did better in those two categories than I did in basic training.”

Dille also says she looks forward to continuing the Crossfit program, whether it’s on her own or in an organized program.

Delacruz and Cruz have high hopes for this program on Langley.

“We’re currently planning on turning the old ACC pool room into a CrossFit gym,” Delacruz said. “We’re hoping to get more people certified as trainers so that we are able to offer more classes for maximum participation.”

A mist falls on a cool May morning.

The solid silence is encroached upon by the sound of a bugel playing the solemn, five-note tune of taps. All in attendance honor those who have sacrificed that which is most precious; their very lives.

A memorial service to the men and women of law enforcement, both civilian and military, was held May 14 at Memorial Park. The memorial was only the beginning of a series of events for Police Week to celebrate the achievements of the nation’s law enforcement and to honor the sacrifices made.

Local law enforcement and members of the 633rd Security Forces Squadron read the list of all 136 names of fallen law enforcement this past year, followed by bagpipe music, which is the traditional instrument of law enforcement. The ceremony ended with a 21-gun salute.

“The ultimate sacrifice for the men and women of law enforcement is fall-

ing in the line of duty,” said James City County Police Department Master Police Officer Mark Marchand. “This is an honor for us to read the names off for every individual who died in the line of duty across the country.”

In addition to paying homage to lawenforcement veterans, Police Week celebrates the achievements of our defenders.

Locally and nationwide, crime has gone down in some areas. In Hampton, Va., violent crime rate has gone down by six percent, according to the Hampton Police Division. From 1991 to 2010, the national homicide rate has gone down more than 50 percent, according to the FBI. Another event during Police Week featured retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, a speaker on combat and war, who gave training at the Langley Air Force Base theater.

Grossman spoke May 15 to the 633rd SFS and local law enforcement about “killology”, which is the study of killing in war, the psychological costs of war, possible causes of violence and the pro-

cess of healing victims of violencee.

U.S. Army Cpl. Brian Miller has a lot to live for today. Family, career, and extracurricular activities abound for this Warrior Transition Unit Soldier who lost a leg during combat operations while deployed to Iraq supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. Miller and 49 additional Soldiers and Army Veterans competied at the 2012 Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, Colo., April 30 through May 5.

Warrior Games is a partnership between the U.S. Olympics Paralympics Program, and the U.S. Department of Defense. This year’s competition took place at the USOC’s National Training Center, and at the Air Force Academy, in Colorado Springs. Wounded, ill and injured Soldiers, Airmen, Marines, Sailors, Coast Guardsmen and Special Operations Service members competed in archery, cycling, shooting, swimming, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, and track and field events at the third annual Warrior Games.

As the Army worked to win gold at Warrior Games, the team was in its final push during a series of pre Games clinics, scrimmages and training sessions at Ft. Carson and the Air Force Academy in the Colorado Rockies.

Miller, a Littlestown, Pa., resident, trained hard for this year’s Games and will be competed in sitting volleyball, swimming and track and field. He prepared himself well and attended numerous Warrior Transition Command Adaptive Sports led clinics across the country. But, athletics and the benefits derived from competing in adaptive reconditioning sports is only part of this well-rounded Soldier’s portfolio.

Miller delivers inspirational speeches, hunts deer, helps fellow wounded, ill and injured Soldiers and veterans by constructing prosthetic limbs, and still finds time to excel as a member of the Army Sitting Volleyball team. Yes, the tall and slender Miller with a killer serve with great court instincts could be a poster child for a vintage ‘80’s Army TV commercial.

At sitting volleyball clinics in Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Maryland, Miller and his teammates fine tuned techniques and skills for playing winning volleyball and build-

ing on last year’s silver medal performance.

Being a leader on or off the court aren’t skill sets Miller always possessed.

The Army Scout enlisted at 38 but didn’t go to basic training until he was 41. Early on he was rather introverted and somewhat reserved, but much of that changed after a fateful day in Iraq on a hot, dusty, heavily traveled road nicknamed ‘Route Tampa’ north of Baghdad near Taji. A formerly restive area known to harbor improvised explosive devices and vehicle-borne explosive devices. Miller and his team knew the area well, and routinely traveled and helped clear routes, making them safe for Soldiers and civilians.

“I was a Stryker turret gunner in 2009 when our vehicle was struck by a huge explosively formed penetrator that blew thru the Stryker. My lieutenant was knocked to the floor,” continued Miller. “I took a lot of shrapnel in my leg, with much of it blowing through

that leg and going into my right leg. Surgeons removed a huge bolt that penetrated my right leg, too.”

His injuries were so severe that ultimately would lose his right leg to amputation, but on that day he was in damage control mode. “The adrenaline kicks in, and you can do things that you didn’t think possible and continue to operate.”

When Miller tried to lift the 50 caliber machine gun, he couldn’t do it; he was spent.

His teammates lifted him out of the Stryker, put him on the ground and began to administer first aid.

“I couldn’t feel too much,” he said.

“The doctor started packing my wounds, and I felt cold as the he put a tourniquet on my left leg to stop the bleeding, it was only then that I felt the extreme pain.’

Miller was transported to the Baghdad Community Support Hospital for surgeries to stabilize him. Then he was flown to the Balad CSH, then to Germany and finally to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, all in the course of four to five days.

He was on the Army’s ‘fast track’ returning from the battlefield to the United States. His subsequent recovery and physical therapy would be anything but fast.

Miller spent 16 months at Walter Reed and endured 14 surgeries. However, Miller continued to experience chronic pain.

“The doctors gave me three options: keep my leg, have the leg fused, or amputation. I felt amputation was the best option for me, so my leg was removed in October 2010,” he said. Miller and his fiancée, Rachel, jokingly refer to his prosthetic as his ‘bionic man leg.’

“We took a cruise last year and she entered me into the ship’s sexiest legs competition,” he joked. “Well, with a $60,000 bionic leg, I couldn’t lose! I also won the ship’s ‘Sexiest Man’ competition. I was on a roll.” Miller ultimately had the last laugh, and arranged with the activity director that upon receiving the award would propose to Rachel.

Miller thinks his injuries were a time of reflection for him, and he really began to open up more during his recovery and after meeting Rachel.

“I’m doing quite a bit of public speaking, telling my story to young Soldiers and others interested in hearing it. Anytime I can help, I want to do what I can to assist,” he said. Miller spoke at the CBWTU-Virginia’s muster last month, and plans to do more.

More than 40 members of the Langley Air Force Base community brought their concerns, questions and recommendations to the 2012 Caring for People Forum at the base community center, May 2.

The forum was the second annual iteration of the event, in which Airmen, civilian employees and family members participated in working groups to identify problems and propose solutions to Air Force policies and services. After the brainstorming and discussion process, the working groups convened to vote on the most important issues raised earlier in the day.

SigniďŹ cant issues brought forth at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s forum included the following: â&#x2013; Removal of the abdominal circumference measurement from the Air Force physical ďŹ tness test, and adding the metric to the memberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual physical health assessment; â&#x2013; Increasing security in and around Langleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Airman dormitories; â&#x2013; Improving the assignment process for Airmen in the Exceptional Family Member Program, including revisions to permissive leave policies; and â&#x2013; Improved ďŹ nancial readiness training to new Airmen and ofďŹ cers during initial training.

According to U.S. Public Health Service Cmdr. (Dr.) Bryan Davidson, Joint Base Langley-Eustis Integrated Delivery System chairman, the IDS briefed wing senior leadership, including U.S. Air Force Col. Kory Auch, 633rd Air Base Wing commander.

Leadership will review the issues and forward selected topics to Air Combat Command. From there, the major commandsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; collective themes are forwarded to the Air Force CFP Forum in August, where Air Force leaders will review the forceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top issues and implement initiatives if applicable.

While not all issues raised at the forum will reach the MAJCOM level, Davidson said the IDS will â&#x20AC;&#x153;consolidate and trackâ&#x20AC;? concerns and problem locally, working with installation leadership to create initiatives at Langley where possible.

A veteran of CFP Forums in previous years, Cooper said she has seen the impact of the ideas born in the working groups ďŹ rst-hand. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These forums deďŹ nitely make an impact on the Air Force. After I did the forum last year, I could see changes implemented based on what came out of the forums,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I worked with single Airman support groups last year, and saw the differences it made for our Airmen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a fantastic idea, and I expect our ideas and concerns will be taken seriously,â&#x20AC;? she added.

Suicide rates are constantly on the minds of Air Force senior leaders.

An Air Force veteran talked with senior leaders, officer and enlisted, from across Air Combat Command regarding suicide and prevention methods during a recent conference at Langley Air Force Base, Va. Belinda G. Moss, a 17-year Air Force retiree, offered insight on suicide in the military, and discussed methods to help prevent suicide within the service. The source of Moss’ motivation stemmed from her personal battle with depression and suicide.

As a major, Moss attempted suicide.

She told leaders about one of two suicide attempts when she felt the pressures of life were stacking up to a point where she could not handle it anymore.

“I took a .357 Magnum to my head and pulled the trigger, but it didn’t go off,” said Moss, who has a doctorate in clinical counseling. Moss said she understands what causes Airmen to commit suicide and is now talking about her survival in order to assist those still in uniform.

One of the ways Moss helps others is by traveling to military bases and speaking out about her battle with depression and suicide. She recalled several instances people shared their stories after hearing her speak - some revealing that her discussions saved their lives.

Moss recounts a conversation with a first sergeant at a base exchange where the senior NCO approached her and said, “It’s amazing that you’re here, because I came to this base exchange to get some things together. Because when I left here, I was going to commit suicide.

And you talked me out of it.“ ACC suicide deaths have decreased from 14 in 2010 to 10 in 2011; however the command currently has 7 suicide deaths within 2012.

is educating Airmen on suicide. Organizations such as family medicine, mental health, the chaplaincy and others at bases across the command have trained professionals to help anyone who is dealing with depression or thoughts of suicide.

Air Force leaders believe one of the most important preventative measures to suicide is the wingman concept, practiced by stepping up, reporting and helping to prevent fellow Airmen from taking their own lives.

The Comprehensive Airman Fitness program has a myriad of resources for mental, physical, social and spiritual fitness. Moss said suicide in the military may never disappear, but people can help decrease the risk factors associated with suicide by looking at the root cause.

According to Moss, Airmen must understand that it is not pressure that causes suicide, but “an emotional pattern that they’ve been dealing with most of their lives.”

Moss offers a program that teaches Airmen how to understand and change their emotional pattern.

“If we can teach them self-awareness and personal mastery, then we can stop it,” Moss said. “How masterful you are on the outside depends on the degree of mastery you have on the inside.”

Adopt-A-School program continues to grow at JBLE

Service members from Joint Base Langley-Eustis are volunteering their skills and knowledge to schools in the local community, through the Adopt-a-School Program.

The program, which began in April 2011, links Joint Base Langley-Eustis with Hampton City Schools, and provides volunteers on a continuous basis for tutoring and mentoring students.

Since its inception, 18 schools from the Hampton Roads area have requested adoption by a JBLE unit.

The 10th Intelligence Squadron adopted Tarrant Elementary School, volunteering more than 280 hours, donating school supplies and supporting the Read Across America program by reading to more than 400 students.

“A field trip to the base is in the works,” said Master Sgt. Philip Torres, 10th IS NCO in charge of readiness.

“The 10th IS will provide a cook-out and tour for the students.”

With similar projects between units and their adopted schools, students learn both in and out of the classroom.

“Students primarily benefit from the program,” said David Wiker, 633rd Force Support Squadron school liaison officer. “But unit volunteers and school staff also benefit by spending time with the children receiving additional help.”

Wiker helps base units connect with schools in search of adoption partners. Once the connection is made, volunteers can devote any free time to classroom or schoolground activities.

Any JBLE unit can adopt a school as part of the program.

Once the connection if official, any member of the unit, military or civilian, can participate with the adopted school.

The initiative is a commander-led program; therefore, individuals interested should route their request through the proper channels.

A husband who championed the progression of disability policy and the exceptional family member program received the 2012 Military Spouse of the Year Award May 10.

Jeremy Hilton, spouse of Air Force Lt. Col. Renae Hilton, an Air Force OfďŹ ce of Special Investigations agent on Joint Base Andrews, Md., received the award during a luncheon at the Marine Barracks Washington.

Upon receipt of the award, Hilton, who has a daughter with special needs, lauded fellow ďŹ nalists from the other services, and shared what also inspired his efforts to advocate for military families impacted by illness or disability. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Five of the six spouses of the year

are signiďŹ cantly impacted by a disability or chronic medical condition,â&#x20AC;?

Hilton said, adding that about 54 million people, or one in six, in the U.S. are also impacted by a disability.

Hilton explained that any type of family is subject to facing the challenging circumstances brought on by illness, injury or genetic aberration. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For some, this will happen in a split second, whether from an (improvised explosive device) or from the doctor telling you that something is wrong with your baby,â&#x20AC;?

As a warm breeze rolled in from water, two spouses from Langley Air Force Base, Va., sat down for a quiet lunch on the outside deck of the Langley Club, during Military Spouse Appreciation Day, May 11.

Kristin Auch and Cassie Bends began their lunch conversation with the relationships forged between spouses of Service members.

“They become your family,” Auch, the wife of Col. Korvin Auch, 633rd Air Base Wing commander, said. “They are going to be there for you when you need them.”

Bends smiled and nodded in agreement. Although she’s only been married for a year to Staff Sgt. Bradford Bends II, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordnance disposal technician, she has already experienced her husband deploying to Afghanistan, twice. Recently, she learned he had been selected to deploy again.

“I’ve learned to keep myself really busy,” Bends said. “But, I’ve also learned that everyone is really tight knit.”

Auch smiled back, with a look of understanding that comes from enduring her share of deployments.

“That’s the thing about military spouses,” she said. “They get it. They understand deployments and how to handle them.”

Self-admittedly, Bends said she doesn’t have much experience as a military spouse. When the lunch with Auch was scheduled, Bends used the opportunity to ask her fellow spouses if they had any questions or concerns.

“I haven’t been a military spouse very long,” Bends began. “But, the main concern among spouses seems to be a need for more communication.”

Auch nodded, recognizing the need to reach out to as many spouses as possible.

“There are programs out there that people don’t realize we even have,” she said. “We’re finding that word of mouth may be the best way to communicate to most of our spouses.”

passionate about is the Key Spouse program. Every squadron on base has spouses who volunteer their time to assist military families.

“Key Spouses are your link between the military and your family,” Auch said. “They work a lot with first sergeants and commanders to make sure we are taking care of our people when they need us.”

Auch encouraged Bends to visit the Airman and Family Readiness Center on base to learn more about the program, as well as other opportunities for spouses – including Heart Link, an orientation designed to welcome spouses new to the Langley community. Bends nodded again, thinking back to her early life experiences with the military lifestyle.

“I’m not completely new to the military,” she said. “When I was a kid my dad was in the Air Force, so I got to experience things from that perspective.”

Bends said those experiences helped her acclimate better when she took on the role of an Air Force spouse. Auch laughed as she began sharing her introduction into military life.

“I’m from Minnesota,” Auch said.

“My husband and I were high school sweethearts who got married right after college. I knew nothing about the military when he joined. So, I got to experience it all from day one.”

years she wouldn’t trade her life for anything. Even though at times, moving was difficult – especially with their children, Auch said she always tried to stay positive.

“Even if I was upset about moving somewhere, I would try to make it an adventure for my kids,” she said. “I used to tell them ‘your new best friend is waiting for you at the next base.’”

Bends reflected on Auch’s words for a few moments before speaking.

“I think it’s a completely different world in the military, when you have kids,” she said.

Auch laughed again. She said being an Air Force spouse, having children who experience military life, and dealing with deployments has made her a stronger person. She was able to find herself through the years she has served alongside her husband.

“You gain so much independence when they deploy,” Auch said. “That never goes away. You are stronger than you think you are. All military spouses are. In 23 years I can’t say anything bad about my time with the Air Force.”

She smiled one more time as she looked past the railing on the club deck and across the water at Langley.

“We’ve been to some amazing places and met some really amazing people – and all of that reminds me why I’m so proud to be a military spouse, alongside all the other spouses out there.”

Summer Youth Volunteer Program The American Red Cross is seeking military youth 13-17 years old to participate in the Summer Youth Volunteer Program. Youth volunteers will have fun while learning new skills at McDonald Army Health Center on Fort Eustis or various organizations on Langley Air Force Base.

The program will run from June 25 to Aug. 17.

Volunteer orientation dates are as follows: June 7, 6 p.m., Fort Eustis; June 9, 10 a.m., Fort Eustis; June 13, 6 p.m., Red Cross Hampton Roads Chapter (3 miles outside LAFB LaSalle Ave. gate) All youth attending an orientation must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Jefferson Lab open house The U.S. Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will hold an Open House on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Newport News. Visitors are invited to come and learn about nuclear physics, superconducting materials, supercomputers, particle accelerators, lasers and much more. Exhibits, demonstrations, tours and hands-on activities will be available, providing a day of fun and learning for people of all ages.

Visitors will also be able to access the lab from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and stay until 3 p.m. Admission and parking are free. All public parking will be accessible by turning east onto Hogan Drive at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Hogan.

Parking lots will open at 8:30 a.m.; early arrivals will not be permitted.

This event is spread out over several facilities and involves a lot of walking and climbing concrete stairs. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes and sunscreen or protective clothing. Photos and videotaping are welcome; vendors will be selling light refreshments. Free shuttle buses will be available to carry visitors between some of the tour stops; however, marked areas may be traveled on foot.

The 633rd Force Support Squadron will introduce the “Go for Green” initiative at Langley’s dining facilities, May 14.

“Go for Green,” or G4G, is a point-ofdecision labeling system providing Airmen with a quick assessment of menu offerings using “stop light”-style labels.

“Green” items are foods Airmen should eat often, including fewer calories, less fat and sodium, and more fiber. “Yellow” items are suggested for occasional consumption, and contain an average amount of calories. “Red” items should be eaten rarely, and include foods high in calories, sugar, fats and sodium.

G4G describes an ideal “Green” meal as: ■ Entrees with less than 300 calories and 10 grams of fat ■ Starchy sides with less than 200 calories

■ Vegetables with less than 100 calories ■ Desserts with less than 150 calories and

6 grams of fat ■ Dairy from fat-free to 1 percent ■ Low-calories or calorie-free beverages According to Master Sgt. Francis Abrenica, the 633rd FSS Crossbow DFAC manager, each item along the serving line will feature a color-coded decal to classify it in accordance with the G4G system. Additionally, the Crossbow Dining Facility and Raptor Café flight kitchen will display posters and table placards describing the program, and offering recommendations to diners.

The goal of the program is to educate and encourage Airmen to choose healthier options during meals in order to improve overall performance.

“The program will enhance the fitness of our Airmen,” Abrenica said. “If they eat correctly, it helps them exercise correctly and maintain Air Force standards.”
