Secretary of the Air Force announces departure AIR FORCE NEWS SERVICE

Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley has announced his plan to step down June 21 as the Air Force's top civilian after serving for nearly five years.

“It's been an honor and a privilege to serve with our Air Force's great Airmen,” Donley said. “Their accomplishments have been nothing short of impressive and I'm humbled to be a part of this team.

The Air Force has been a way of life for so much of my career, I know it will be bittersweet to say farewell.”

Donley was confirmed as the 22nd secretary of the Air Force Oct. 2, 2008. He served as the acting secretary since June of that year, as well as for seven months in 1993, making him the longest serving secretary in the history of the Air Force.

He also served as the service's top financial officer from 1989 to 1993.

Though Donley has not yet announced any future plans, he remains dedicated during his remaining time to supporting the Secretary of Defense in the many challenges that lie ahead for the service.

“In the meantime, there remains much to do,” Donley said. “This is an extraordinary and exciting time for our Air Force, filled with both challenges and opportunities. I remain confident that the strength and professionalism of our Air-

men, and the commitment and determination of General Welsh, Chief Cody and our military and civilian leadership team, will continue to see us through.”

Donley's 35 years of experience in the national security community also includes service in the Senate, White House and the Pentagon. Prior to assuming his current position, he served as the Director of Administration and Management in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

The commander of Air Combat Command, Gen. Mike Hostage III, has officially selected the officers who will be joining the United States Air Force Thunderbirds for the 2014 demonstration season. Among the selections is Capt.

Ryan Wick, an F-22 pilot currently stationed at Langley Air Force Base.

Lt. Col. Matthew Bradley, 83rd Fighter Weapons Squadron director of operations from Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., will become Thunderbird No. 1, the squadron’s commander and lead pilot. As the twofold duty title implies, his responsibilities will include commanding a force of more than 100 enlisted Service members and 11 commissioned officers assigned to the Thunderbirds, along with leading all demonstration flights. Bradley will replace Lt. Col. Greg Moseley.

Wick will become Thunderbird No. 6, the team’s opposing solo pilot. The solo pilots perform maneuvers that showcase the maximum capabilities of the F-16 aircraft. Capt. Jason Curtis, the current opposing solo pilot,

will transition to the lead solo position in 2014, replacing Maj. Blaine Jones.

Maj. Scott Petz, an F-16 pilot stationed at Nellis AFB, Nev., will become Thunderbird No. 3, the team’s rightwing pilot. He will fly as close as 18 inches from the No. 1 jet during flight formations, demonstrating the teamwork and precision of America’s Air Force. Petz will replace Maj. Caroline Jensen.

Capt. Joshua Larsen, an F-16 pilot currently stationed at Shaw AFB, S.C., will become Thunderbird No. 8, the team’s advance pilot and narrator. His duties will include advancing to show sites ahead of the team, coordinating logistical details with the local show organizers, and narrating to the crowd during performances. Larsen will replace Maj. Michael Fisher.

The team is still reviewing applications for the position of Thunderbird 9, the team’s flight surgeon. An announcement will be made once the selection is finalized.

The 12 officer positions on the team are two-year tours of duty. By design, the position openings are staggered, allowing the squadron to maintain continuity of experience and leadership. In odd-numbered years, Thunderbird Nos. 2, 4, 7, 10, 11 and 12 are replaced.

The year 2014 will mark the Thunderbirds’ 61st season as the Air Force’s premier jet demonstration team.

From mid-March until mid-November, the team travels around the country and abroad, showcasing the integrity, selfless service and excellence embodied by American Airmen everywhere.

AV-8 engine’s roar pierced the serenity of a quiet, cool morning. The NASCAR driver behind the wheel confidently revved the engine as his hand gripped the stick-shift.

This was the day he had waited for since coming to Virginia, a chance to showcase the SupportMilitary.org car to Service members at Joint Base Langley-Eustis with the help of U.S. Air Force Col. Steve West, 633rd Air Base Wing chaplain and founder of the Support Military organization.

The NASCAR team stopped by JBLE on their way up to the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Toyota Owners 400 race at Richmond, Va. West worked with Dell Hamilton, Support Military co-founder and NASCAR team member, showcasing the number 52 former NASCAR competition vehicle to JBLE. West and Hamilton created the organization together in August 2012, providing a conduit for outside organizations to be recognized as legitimate and military-friendly. This in turn gives Service members and supporters a reliable outlet to find trustworthy organizations to support. Neither of them expected it to progress so quickly.

When the NASCAR competition vehicle showed up at JBLE, Service members at Langley and Fort Eustis showed their appreciation.

At Fort Eustis, the number 52 car parked in front of the Exchange, giving viewers a chance to ask questions or just take a peek at the heavily-modified stock car.

“I used to race open-wheel dirt cars,” said U.S. Army Spc. Jebediah ThomasZiemer, a generator mechanic and NASCAR enthusiast. “Seeing the next step up, I have to admit, is pretty cool.”

At Langley, Service members also took the opportunity to share this unique experience with their families.

Cartwright also brought along his 4-year-old son, Nathan, an avid race car enthusiast, to look at the car.

“Nathan really likes race cars, so this is a real treat for him,” said Cartwright.

Nathan wasn’t the only child to experience the car; children and caretakers from the Bethel Youth Center also saw it and had a chance to sit in the driver’s seat.

“This was an excellent surprise for the

kids,” said Shanda Misse, youth programs chief. “Once the trailer pulled up, the kids started talking and getting antsy; they really were excited to see the car.”

In addition to showcasing the car around JBLE, Blake Koch, the driver for SupportMilitary.org, took time to answer questions and share his experience with NASCAR to Service members at the Langley Chapel.

He expressed his appreciation for what Service members do every day.

“Without you guys, I wouldn’t be able to drive,” said Koch. “Knowing that, it is truly an honor to represent you guys any way I can out on the track.”

Television dramas depict lawyers and law professionals as sharp-suited, silvertongued briefcase wielders, too busy for the mundane and always out to solve an impossible case.

Although they may not wear suits, Joint Base Langley-Eustis law professionals do have the wits and patience to advise personnel at Fort Eustis and Langley Air Force Base, Va., on almost everything law-related, whether it be drafting wills or solving courts-martial.

“To take legal issues off the minds of our troops is the essence of our mission,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Calvin Anderson, 633rd Air Base Wing staff judge advocate.

“When we do that, I know we’ve done our part to provide the command with mission-ready people.”

Since legal issues take many forms, legal operations are divided into two broad categories: military justice and general law.

Justice incorporates issues such as courts-martial, administrative discharges and non-judicial punishment. Leadership at all levels utilizes this side of military justice to determine fair and reasonable punishment for Service members who violate the law.

More commonly, law professionals work under the general law category by providing advice, counsel and similar legal aid to JBLE personnel.

“It is important for people to realize what the law office does,” said Air Force Capt. C.J. Grotewohl, Langley legal assistance chief. “Having a will finished before a deployment, filing your taxes or working out a landlord-tenant issue can save you a lot of time and trouble.”

Approximately 35 to 45 clients step into the law office every week for walk-in and scheduled appointments dealing with legal assistance issues. In addition to answering questions under general law, law office personnel also work on 20 to 25 wills a week.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Alta Odom, a legal assistance client, updated her will after setting up an appointment and was pleased with the service she received.

it’s relieved a lot of stress,” said Odom.

“I’ve come to them before for legal advice and powers of attorney, and every time I leave, I know I am in good hands.”

Legal advice comprises the majority of work handled at the legal office. They can answer questions about divorce law, Virginian law, powers of attorney, ethics issues, claims or just about anything else under the sun.

Helping with personal legal issues isn’t the only function of the law office. Before hosting a fund raiser or organizational function, an individual must obtain con-

sent and counsel from the legal office. Furthermore, the law office must review all professional organizations for legal sufficiency to ensure they stay within appropriate boundaries.

Legal issues of any kind have the potential to be extremely in-depth, but even the most novice legal clients can answer their own questions in the comfort of their homes. Grotewohl showcased a resource containing all of the information of the legal office at the push of a button.

“Most of the questions we receive can be answered on our website,” said Grotewohl.

For deploying Service members with a multitude of pre-deployment tasks on their plate, going to the website to initiate a new will or power of attorney can give them a head start before they step into the legal office.

From there, members can view worksheets required to process various matters, and view topics on a wide-range of legal subjects through the use of a simple drop-down menu. The topics within are written in a user-friendly fashion so users can grasp some of the more complex legal processes.

Fort Eustis Soldiers and other Service members should also utilize the website regardless of its Air Force affiliation, said U.S. Army Capt. Rebecca Hampton, Fort Eustis legal assistance chief.

“I try to send our Soldiers and other Service Members to the website,” said Hampton. “Military law is universal in a lot of aspects.”

For Army-specific concerns, Hampton said Soldiers can call the Fort Eustis office to receive answers.

Hampton stated the Fort Eustis office can handle Army-specific cases from “Financial Liability Investigation of Property Loss” to “General Officer Memorandum of Reprimand.”

Whether utilizing the website or speaking with an attorney face-to-face, Hampton and Grotewohl promise to take all questions and provide the answers Service members need.

A public law that took effect in January repealed automatic enrollment in Family Servicmembers Group Life Insurance for military members married to military members, but those Airmen may still elect the additional coverage, Air Force Personnel Center officials said April 30.

As of Jan. 2, military members who marry another member of the Armed Forces are no longer automatically covered under Family Servicemembers Group Life Insurance.

Under SGLI, military members are automatically covered for $400,000 unless they decline coverage or elect a reduced amount of coverage, said Susie Parson, AFPC casualty services branch. Under FSGLI, members’ military spouses were automatically covered for an additional $100,000 or less, depending on the amount of the member’s election.

“The law change did not prohibit additional coverage for military spouses,” Parson said. “It just repealed automatic enrollment, which means Airmen are not enrolled or charged premiums automatically. Airmen will have a choice and those who want it will now be required to submit an election for the coverage.”

Some military newlyweds, however, are paying premiums for FSGLI but are not actually covered.

“If you married another military member on or after Jan. 2, you are affected. Defense Manpower Data Center and Defense Finance and Accounting Service updates are underway, and once they are complete, you will be refunded,” Parson said. “However, you are not actually covered under the Family SGLI.” Affected members who do not want the additional coverage on their military spouse need do nothing. Once the data systems update, they will get their refunds.

Members who want the additional coverage must elect coverage which will require that the spouse answer various health related questions. Premium rates vary depending on the member’s age and desired coverage. For example, the premium for a 34-year-old is 50 cents per month for $10,000 coverage or $5 per month for $100,000.

Members who want FSGLI must visit their military personnel section and complete the SGLV 8286A, Family Coverage Election and Certificate.

“If you have experienced any changes – marital status, dependents or other – it is imperative that you update those in DEERS as quickly a possible,” Parson said.

“When such changes occur, you are also reminded to update your virtual Record of Emergency Data and review your SGLI election.”

A runner and his daughter participate in the 1-mile portion of the Bataan Death March memorial walk. In addition to the 16.6-mile walk, participants could choose to walk or run a shorter five or one-mile distance to honor veterans of the original Bataan Death March.

“Since I didn’t bow, he took the bottle and busted my teeth out,” he said.

A Japanese sergeant dropped a bottle of Coke where John was supposed to walk, so he picked it up and gave it to him. Afterwards, he was punished for his lack of “respect.”

John Mims, a Bataan Death March survivor, and approximately 70,000 other Filipino and American prisoners of war endured the torturous march in April, 1942. During the march, POWs were forced to walk 80 miles through the Philippines to the captured Camp O’Donnell.

The prisoners were stabbed if they could not keep up, and those who were not bayoneted would most likely die from disease or decapitation before the end of the war.

“After they broke my legs with a bulldozer when I tried to escape, I didn’t think I would make it,” said Mims. “If a naval officer didn’t save me before the march to Camp O’Donnell, I would have been right.”

Stories like Mims’ were not uncommon during the Bataan Death March memorial walk April 27, at Dismal Swamp, Chesapeake, Va. Before the memorial ceremony for Mims and his fellow POWs, participants walked 16.6 miles in order to feel a fraction of the pain endured by Service members in the Philippines.

With more than 400 total participants, Langley Air Force Base, Va., was represented in full during the event. Approximately 150 Airmen participated in the walk, with the majority wearing uniforms and boots, and a few also carrying up to 45 pounds of weight.

himself fit enough for the journey, but he was surprised once he neared the half-way point.

“When we first started, I didn’t think it would be so bad,” said Hart after walking the first six miles. “Now, I have to admit it feels like more.”

Towards the end of the walk, groups broke apart due to fatigue, and a few participants threw in the towel early, climbing into golf carts on their way to the finish.

Hart and the majority of the Airmen did not give up. Although the physical pain became more prominent, the purpose for the walk became clearer.

“My feet are feeling progressively worse; they’ve practically gone numb,” said Hart, shortly before he finished. “I can’t believe anyone could have walked 80 miles like this; it’s incredible.”

Hart also said he could really appreciate what veterans endured; he could connect with them on another level outside of simply reading about the march or watching a documentary.

Many participants stopped their walk and embraced Mims, full of respect and sorrow for the pain he endured. Chief Master Sgt. Tony Levine, 718th Intelligence Squadron superintendent, was one of the participants who expressed gratitude for Mims. “It is truly an honor to meet you,� said Levine. “Thank you for your service, sir, and God bless you.�

The scene at the ďŹ nish line contained a mixture of expressions. Airmen sat down wherever there was an open space, bandaging bloody heels or rubbing out stiff toes. After a respite, participants gathered atop a shaded knoll to show their appreciation for their fellow walkers, event organizers and especially the veterans.

Before he took shelter from the bright, mid-day sun, Mims shared the true reason he takes time to attend different events for Bataan Death March survivors and other veterans.

Had Mims not been saved before the end of the war, he would have certainly lost his life due to starvation, exhaustion or at the tip of a bayonet. For his brothers in arms who would not see home again, he shared a few words. “I lost a lot of buddies in the Philippines.

I do this in honor of all the people who died and for those who made it back and have since passed,� said Mims. He then took a pause, swallowed hard and turned a misty gaze to the sky. “I love ‘em.�

The 221st Military Police Detachment received the 2012 Brig. Gen. David H. Stem Award April 5, an honor reserved for the best military police unit in the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command.

Presentation of the award is based on the unit’s performance measured by recorded accomplishments, achievements and command programs that best exemplify the intent of Stem.

“This award represents the hard work our Soldiers put forth every day for the community,” said Capt. Samantha Hoxha, 221st MPD commander.

Originally named the Liberty Award, the Stem Award was created in 1985 and was intended to recognize the most outstanding military police unit in TRADOC. In 1987, the award was renamed the Brig. Gen. David H. Stem Award in honor of the late commandant of the United States Military Police School and Military Police Corps chief who perished in a plane crash that year.

The award is given annually to one of 50 MP units in TRADOC based on a variety of factors from weapons qualification to individual physical fitness. Hoxha said the winning unit is selected not only for their outstanding performance of the military police profession, but for their “Soldiering” skills.

■ Three 221st MPD Soldiers made the Noncommissioned Officer Education System Commandant’s List, and one received the NCOES Leadership Award.

With the bar set high, the 221st MPD is looking to top this past year’s accomplishments, but Hoxha said they are focused on the work, not the reward.

“As military police, we set the standards of excellence.

It’s our duty to provide a challenge to our Soldiers and hold them to a higher standard,” she said. “Throughout the year, we don’t focus on winning the award – we focus on our Soldiers.”

Although the award recognizes the unit’s accomplishments, Sgt. Melinda Storsin, 3rd MPD military working dog patrol explosive detection dog handler, believes that because the award fosters an environment that urges Soldiers to constantly strive for excellence, it benefits the Army MP corps as a whole.

“Each 221st [MPD] Soldier takes the knowledge and skills they learned here to their next duty station. The ‘sharing of excellence’ makes better Soldiers, which makes the Army better each day,” said Storsin. “Our MPs are going the extra mile to make our installation better. Being a part of a unit that is constantly striving for excellence is outstanding.”

New Fathers Workshop: For fathers, by fathers

Many parenting workshops are geared toward teaching expectant mothers the ins and outs of motherhood, but in today’s society, fathers also play a large and active role in their children’s lives.

Luckily for these new and expecting fathers, resources are available at Langley to help them with the challenges of fatherhood. The 633rd Medical Operations Squadron Family Advocacy Outreach Program offers New Fathers Workshops as a way to help prepare new and expecting fathers for their journey into fatherhood.

“Fatherhood is very critical to young children,” said U.S. Public Health Service Commander Bryan Davidson, 633rd Medical Operations Squadron director of psychological health. “This class offers an opportunity for expectant fathers to gather and talk about the core expectations they have for fatherhood and be able to answer any questions and concerns they may have.”

The most recent class was held April 11 and offered a lesson plan on parenting do’s and don’ts, and discussed the more involved role that fathers have in their children’s lives today. Topics included baby-proofing, diaper changing, bathing tips, crying, deployments and many others. For the attendees, these discussions were eye-opening.

“There are a lot of safety tips and parenting methods that I had never heard of or even thought of before,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Ralph Oliver, 45th

bleeding, detached retinas and many other traumas. The class discussed some of the triggers that can cause SBS, and ways to recognize different types of crying.

“Crying has a tendency to push buttons, especially when a person is already under stress or tired,” said Linda Hough, Family Advocacy Outreach manager.

“The worst mistake a parent can do is to let their stress level get to the point of accidentally shaking or harming their child out of frustration.”

While many of the topics covered areas for new and expecting fathers, even experienced fathers benefited from the class.

“It’s been a while since I’ve had a baby in my house and the class has helped me recharge and get some refresher points,” said Mater Sgt. Byron Rauch, father of three and currently expecting his fourth daughter. “Hearing other fathers’ comments and opinions on the way they have done things has given me a different perspective on things I might not have thought about while my three were smaller.”

Family Advocacy hopes to have this workshop quarterly for fathers to take advantage. They are also planning to have different fathers lead the class each quarter to gain different perspectives and advice for new and expecting fathers.

“We’re encouraging these fathers to be more loving and actively involved in their children’s lives,” said Davidson.

“I think there are few roles in our lives more important that being a parent and we should receive and understand a child as a gift that is precious and worth our vested interest.”

Members of the Joint Base Langley-Eustis community rallied to support environmental conservation and sustainability efforts in a week-long celebration in honor of Earth Day April 22 through 26.

More than 230 volunteers joined environmental protection officials at Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis in a series of cleanup and educational projects on each installation. Projects included shoreline and tree plantings, woodland trail clean-up and maintenance, storm drain marker installation, preservation of historical areas and rain garden maintenance.

Additionally, educational displays, including rain barrel system demonstrations, environmental presentations and poster displays, promoted the spirit of conservation and responsibility to the installation community.

Collectively, Langley and Fort Eustis encompass more than 11,000 acres, with both installations situated along major waterways and boasting thousands of acres of wetlands.

“Earth Day reminds us to conserve and protect today’s natural resources for many, many future generations to come. We teach our children about the importance of protecting our air, land and waterways from pollution, and cleaning up and learning from our past spills and industrial practices,” said Emma Watterson, a 733rd CED pollution prevention support specialist. “JBLE will continue sustainability initiatives to protect and celebrate the Earth not only on Earth Day, but throughout the year, and ensure both installations can protect and serve for many future generations.”

Fort Eustis honored its dedicated corps of volunteers at the 2013 annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony, April 19 at the onpost club. Organizations from across the installation honored volunteers with certiďŹ cates of appreciation and gifts, with the post Volunteer Advisory Council naming volunteers of the year in eight categories.

Carissa Burgett, a U.S. Army spouse, won the Command Sgt. Maj. David E. Minor Volunteer of the Year award, named to honor the 30-year Army veteran and outstanding Fort Eustis volunteer who succumbed to cancer in 2001.

Burgett serves as the hospitality and welcome committee chairperson, secretary and recorder for the 221st Military Police Detachment Family Readiness Group.

Throughout the year, she volunteered with Army Community Service as a program assistant, relocation program assistant and a spouse’s series instructor.

According to Donna Cloy, Fort Eustis’ Army Volunteer Corps Coordinator, volunteers provided 64,038 hours of service in 2012, equating to more than $1.5 million saved in labor costs for the post. Volunteers worked in a variety of roles, including in family FRGs, with the American Red Cross at McDonald Army Health Center, as ďŹ tness instructors at the post’s two ďŹ tness centers, with youth athletic leagues and organizing fund raisers and clothing, food and

Clad in bright yellow safety jackets, the Soldiers meticulously worked their way along each side the busy roadway, plucking litter from the grass and discarding it into trash bags while motorists whizzed by unassumingly.

For three miles, 25 volunteers from the 689th Rapid Port Opening Element, 597th Transportation Brigade scoured Warwick Boulevard in Newport News, Va., April 19, cleaning an area they adopted as part of the city’s “Adopt-a-Spot� program in an effort to beautify the community surrounding Fort Eustis.

U.S. Army 1st Lt. Brian Kavanagh, the unit’s clearance platoon leader, organized the clean-up event to give his Soldiers an opportunity to support the local community. He said the unit participates in volunteer activities at least twice each quarter, and wanted to continue their altruistic trends outside the gate.

The lieutenant said the Adopt-aSpot project is only one of several community volunteer projects the unit will complete. The 689th RPOE plans to assist the Newport News Public Schools special education program host their ďŹ eld day later this month, and routinely visits local elementary and middle schools for ďŹ eld and career days. “As a whole, the citizens of the U.S. see the military in a positive light, and I think that’s because of what we do in the community. We’re more than Soldiers heading off to war,â€? Kavanagh said. “We have to live up to Army values, and to encourage our Soldiers to live up to that standard, we have to provide those opportunities to go above and beyond.â€?

Army showcases technology, highlights funding during Capitol Hill Army Day

The Army showcased its latest technology and medical advances to members of Congress and staffers on Capitol Hill to highlight the importance of funding for modernization, research and development in order to better equip, protect and care for Soldiers.

Lawmakers and staff handled weapons, looked through night vision goggles, saw a thermal imaging display, tried on body armor, spoke to medical researchers and discussed technology with Soldiers during Army Day on Capitol Hill, April 25.

As part of the event, Soldiers escorted more than 400 people throughout the day to the Capitol Hill Police shooting range to demonstrate the importance of investments in technology and weapons modernization.

At the range, Soldiers from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) supervised as participants fired 9 mm weapons, both with and without pointing lasers, to highlight technology that can greatly enhance accuracy and protect Soldiers.

Brig. Gen. Paul A. Ostrowski, with the Army’s Program Executive Office, Soldier, said it is important to give Congress a “hands-on” feel for the equipment to show where tax dollars are being spent and where funds should go in the future.

Ostrowski said the ultimate goal of the event is to equip and protect the Soldier.

“It’s an opportunity to educate the staffs as to what it is that their Army is doing -- not only doing today, but what we’re going to do in the future – that runs the research and development lines, the science and technology lines, and in our procurement lines,” said Ostrowski.

“The better we educate them, and the better that they are able to identify and understand the technology and the equipment that we are providing, the better off they are making their decisions into whether to fund our Army,” he said.

House Liaison Division, said the event gives members of Congress and staffers a chance to have one-on-one conversations and get feedback on a Soldier level, while also allowing Soldiers to demonstrate technology.

“We’re very excited for this opportunity to showcase some of the Army’s premier weapons systems and survivability equipment that we have for our Soldiers who are operating in harm’s way,” said Lynn.

She said it is critical that members and staff have the first-hand knowledge of the equipment so they can better make decisions when allocating funds to the Army.

“This is a great engagement and we continue building advocacy and trust between our members of Congress and the Army,” Lynn said.

“I think it is important outreach and something that the members and staff can recall later and say, ‘I remember that weapon. I saw the capabilities. I understand now how it can help our Soldiers while they are in combat,’” she said.

Lt. Col. Ed Ash, a budget liaison officer, said Army Day on Capitol Hill is an important way to bring the technology and equipment to Con-

gress and demonstrate the importance of research, development and modernization.

“It makes it much easier to explain why something is important,” he said, using the example of heavy body armor. “They saw just for a little while how uncomfortable it was to wear something that was too heavy, and this is why we think it’s worthwhile to spend the money to make more effective Soldiers by not having to carry heavy [gear].”

Col. Dallas Hack, director of the Army’s Combat Casualty Care Research Program with the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, highlighted the life-saving importance of investments in military medical research and technology.

“Thanks to the support of Congress, we have the lowest death rate from injuries at any time in history,” he said. “We’re able to do things to make people more resilient, we’re able to know when they’re having things like a brain injury, and we’re even able to do things that were unheard of 10 years ago to take care of our troops out there.”

The training was a part of a combined joint logistics over-the-sea exercise that started April 15, 2013, and lasted a week.

The MCS is a mobile port designed to load and unload equipment or personnel onto otherwise inaccessible land for either combat missions or humanitarian aid.

Co. first sergeant, said the mission shows the company’s capabilities and demonstrates they can expediently construct a floating pier anywhere in the world.

The construction is formed in one location off of an existing pier. Piece by piece, tug boats move the platform across the water.

While in open sea, Soldiers manipulate and maneuver 20 or 40-footlong metal floors, creating different shapes until the pier is completed.

For many of the 331st Trans. Co. Soldiers, this is their first experience with such large pallets on the water, making safety a top priority.

Co. watercraft operator, about the 27 platforms that make up the pier. “Setting anchors is very hazardous with big, heavy things swinging around. We have to keep them steady.”

All branches of the U.S. military and members of the South Korean military are involved in the CJLOTS exercise. The 331st Trans. Co. had to rely upon outside sources in order to complete their causeway missions.

“When we all come together, there are more assets to make the mission more successful,” said Brumeister.

He said the advances in military medical treatment can also be used in the civilian world, as Hack said was the case with trauma care during the bombing during the Boston Marathon.

“Thanks again to the support of Congress in helping us do these things,” Hack said. “Not only are we saving lives in the battlefield, we’re now saving lives in the whole emergency system as well.”

Congressional staffer John Witherspoon was among the hundreds of staffers who visited the exhibits, spoke

with Soldiers and handled weapons during the day-long event.

He said Army Day provides an important insight into where and why tax dollars are being spent.

“A lot of the issues going on right now are with sequestration and funding, and it’s easy to just see that as numbers on paper,” he said.

“But once you get out here [you] see what that money is going toward, and why it’s so important. It’s always a great opportunity when you are able to do that.”

USO Battleship Revue The USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia, in partnership with Nauticus and the Virginia Stage Company, will present a World War II-era song and dance show, “Swingtime Salute – The USO Battleship Review.”

The show will take place on the deck of the Battleship Wisconsin (right), docked next to Nauticus at 1 Waterside Drive, Norfolk.

■ May 11 – “Citizen Tanouye.” California’s Ted Tanouye was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during World War II, while his family lived in a Japanese-American camp. Decades later, eight students from his hometown of Torrance began researching his life, discovering both the glory of his sacrifice and the shame of his family’s treatment.

■ May 25 – “Most Honorable Son.” After the Pearl Harbor attack, Ben Kuroki volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps. He would become the first Japanese-American war hero, surviving 58 missions as an aerial gunner. Between tours of duty, he found himself at the center of controversy – a lone spokesman against the racism faced by thousands of Japanese-Americans.

A team of Air Force mountaineers began their journey to ascend and summit Mount Everest recently as the final expedition of the independent U.S. Air Force Seven Summit Challenge.

The team of six Airmen is underway on a 50-day journey to the highest mountain on earth, completing a project that began eight years ago with the goal of reaching the highest mountains on each of the seven continents, to plant the American and Air Force flags.

Collectively, teams of the Summit Challenge have already scaled the more than 104,337 vertical feet on Mount Elbrus, Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Aconcagua, Mount McKinley, Mount Vinson and Mount Kosciuszko.

The summit team is accompanied by four trekkers and three wounded warriors (two pararescuemen and a combat rescue officer) who will not make a summit attempt but support the team in their feat.

The team reached Nepal March 31, and began the final stages of the trip. After spending a few days in the region getting used to the increased elevation, the team pushed on to Everest.

By April 10, most of the team had moved

up to base camp facilities at Lobuche, a mountain peak near Everest. The group then moved on to the Everest Base Camp to acclimatize at further increased elevation and practiced important procedures such as crevasse rescues and ladder handling.

At Everest Base Camp, Capt. Rob Marshall, one of the co-founders of the AF Seven Summits challenge and the leader of the team, was able to make a call home early April 15.

“We were having an awesome day today. We had our Puja, a big spiritual blessing (ceremony), where we ask Mount Everest and essentially the spirit of the mountain to bless the team and give us good luck,” Marshall said, shortly before his data connection was interrupted.

With a view of the Khumbu icefall, a precarious gateway on the ascent to Everest, Marshall said the team grew more excited – looking at the mountain they’ve prepared so hard to climb.

Scaling Mount Everest is not a quick affair.

Marshall said the group will move at a slow pace to improve their chances of getting as many people as possible to the summit.

“You can climb Everest at a faster pace, but from our research, we are giving ourselves the best chance to acclimatize and

the optimal amount of time to reach the top,” Marshall said.

Health is an especially difficult issue for expeditions in the Himalayas. Most of the team fell ill with intestinal “bugs” shortly after their arrival in Nepal, due to the foreign food and living conditions.

The team since returned to Lobuche, which with nearly 20,161 feet elevation is already higher than any point in the continental U.S. They ascended the lower peak April 16 for a “shakedown climb,” giving everyone the important chance to check out their gear on a lower elevation, lower risk climb before making their first trip through the Khumbu icefall and up to Camp 1 on Everest.

The mountaineers plan their final ascent to Everest for mid-May, however the team’s anxiety is rising.

“The stakes of this climb are the highest (no pun intended) of my life,” Marshall wrote online. “There is a lot of personal pride and no shortage of money on the line here.”

They climb to promote camaraderie and team spirit among Airmen, raise money for charity and to honor and commemorate the fallen.

Though not on an official military mission, if successful in their endeavor to

scale 29,029-foot Mount Everest, the crew will become the first team of active-duty American military members to have reached Everest’s summit.

On the team are: ■ Maj. Rob Marshall, a V-22 Osprey pilot from Mercer Island, Wash., stationed in Amarillo, Texas.

■ Capt. Kyle Martin, a T-38 Talon pilot, from Manhattan, Kan., stationed at Langley Air Force Base, Va. ■ Capt. Marshall Klitzke, a KC-135 Stratotanker pilot from Lemmon, S.D., currently an instructor pilot at the Air Force Academy.

■ Capt. Colin Merrin, a GPS satellite operations mission commander from Santee, Calif., stationed at Schriever AFB, Colo.

■ Staff Sgt. Nick Gibson, a Reserve pararescueman and physician-assistant student from Gulf Breeze, Fla., stationed at Patrick AFB. ■ Capt.
