WOUNDED WARRIORS PROVE ‘LIFE WITHOUT LIMBS IS LIMITLESS’

The Newport News police and fire departments competed against the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team in a seven-inning game, April 15, 2017, to raise awareness for the sacrifices and resiliency of the nation’s veterans.

The WWAST is comprised of veterans and active-duty members who lost limbs while serving in the military since 9/11. The members’ amputations range from above the knee to below the elbow, and they hope to educate others that “life without limbs is limitless.”

“We are passionate about being patriots. We love our country. Although we are no longer serving, we feel that we are serving in the capacity of inspiring and educating the world,” said retired U.S. Army Col. Ben Mitchell, WWAST member, whose right leg was amputated below the knee. “My objective is to inspire, be an example and most importantly, try to motivate individuals to get up and never quit.”

Having persevered while undergoing extensive rehabilitation, the team members are competitive athletes, armored with prosthetic arms and legs.

They play against able-bodied athletes in exhibitions across the country to increase awareness for their cause.

Recognizing the impact the WWAST can have on the nation, the organization also hosts softball camps for children with amputations, where the players serve as coaches and mentors.

Their goal is to educate and inspire children who face many of the same challenges they do.

Whether through games or camps, community members attending the event appreciated the WWAST’s mission of encouragement.

“I think (the event) is a positive thing for the community – to let us know we are all capable of anything if you put your mind forward and work together,” said Brittany Lewis, Newport

No matter how many times she said no, he continued. All she wanted was to be anywhere but there.

Now, two years later, she often finds herself still reliving that moment.

“At work if I was zoning out, I was probably going back to the memory,” said the U.S. Air Force Senior Airman, as she looked down at the floor, recounting the

April 21, 2017 day at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, when she became a victim of sexual assault.

They said ‘no.’

“I think he was getting turned on by me telling him ‘no,’ and he wasn’t going to stop,” said the Senior Airman. “I tried to pull myself off him and that’s when he got angry. He dragged me back by my hips, he put his forearm on my back and just held me there.”

The Airman said she tried to keep from being present in the moment, disassociating herself and thinking about activities that she needed to do the next day. Immediately after the assault, she noted the deep bruising along her hips. She was bleeding and a chunk of her hair was missing. She crawled into a ball and cried, realizing what damage had been done, externally and internally.

Sitting alongside the Airman, a U.S. Army Specialist recalled a similar experience in her dorm room at Fort Hood, Texas.

“He rolled on top of me and I fought, of course, but he was heavy,” said the Specialist. “I still thought that I had control of the situation, that I could stop it if I wanted to. But when I asked him if he knew what ‘no’ meant, he told me, ‘No means yes and yes means yes,’ and he laughed in my face. That’s when I became afraid for the first time.”

The assault would change the way she perceives the world around her.

The Aftermath The fear that resulted from her assault, said the Specialist, has immobilized her from enjoying activities she once participated in, driven mostly by a fear of men and large crowds.

“Most of my personality has changed,” she said. “I laughed a lot. I went to parties a lot, I went out a lot.

I enjoyed that stuff and I loved traveling. My biggest thing was I always wanted to see something new. Now, I have a heightened fear that keeps me from what I used to really enjoy.”

While listening, the Airman added that connecting with others became difficult for the her. She consistently rejected invitations to hang-out because of the memories that certain environments evoked.

“I guess because I met my rapist at a club, a place I used to enjoy, I don’t really go out as much anymore,” the Airman said. “When I [arrived at Langley], one of

my coworkers would always invite me out to parties and I would always be like, ‘oh, I’m busy.’ It’s hard because the drinking, being around people in a very hypersexualized environment, like a house party or going to the club, it just reminds me of my own experience.”

For the Airman, it was easier to fabricate a reason to deny the invitations from her new coworkers than reveal the true cause.

The Specialist’s unit was aware of her assault and as a result, she recognized a shift in her team’s dynamic.

“A lot of people were uncomfortable around me,” said the Soldier. “I didn’t have as many people talk to me. The males wouldn’t look me in the eye and the females that did talk to me, only did it for a short period of time.”

Feeling isolated and alone, the Specialist said she felt the need to speak-up to others about how to care for survivors of sexual assault.

Changing the conversation Approximately a year after her assault, the Specialist began telling her story with the goal of providing a face to such traumas.

“It’s important [to speak-up], because who else is going to show our side of it?” she asked. “They always bring up that one scenario where you’re going to get drugged so watch your drink and it doesn’t happen. I was completely sober, he was completely sober, it was the middle of the day. It doesn’t happen in just one scenario and I think people just need to be more careful and to watch each other.”

The idea of keeping an eye on one another rang especially true for the Senior Airman, whose best friend helped her cope after the assault.

“Have someone there who grounds you. Your headspace is just going to be clouded with lots and lots of thoughts,” she said. “For myself, personally, thoughts of suicide, all of the time; flashbacks of my assault, all of the time; but having someone to check on you [can make a difference.] We need to teach more people to reach out to those who have been affected by sexual assault.”

For the first six months, the Airman felt like she was only seen as a victim by those around her. Now, through growth and healing, she aspires to change the conversation about sexual assault.

“We are not perpetual victims, we were victimized at one point, but we don’t have to stay in that box for-

The Specialist echoed her sentiments by saying, “We are not victims. A survivor is what you really are.”

The first Earth Day, held on April 22, 1970, involved roughly 20 million Americans and is widely credited with starting the modern environmental movement.

Twenty years later, 200 million people in 141 countries participated in Earth Day, bringing environmental issues to light on a global scale.

In observance of Earth Day, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, hosted its annual Earth Week with various activities to promote environmental stewardship and preserve natural areas of the installation.

Fort Eustis’ activities included a cleanup of the Warwick Pier picnic area, shoreline plantings, wildlife boat tours and a boxturtle survey.

“The installation has set-up events geared toward something people can accomplish while here every day,” said Donald Johnson, 733rd Civil Engineer Division

Activity Environmental Management Program manager. “We want to bring awareness to the natural habitat and resources, and explain their importance. Earth Day affords all who work and play on Ft. Eustis the opportunity to assist our efforts in sustainability.”

The Warwick Pier picnic area cleanup involved preserving one of Ft. Eustis’ Civil War earthworks, the Magruder Defense Line. The line was a fighting position used

by Confederate Soldiers to prevent Fort Monroe’s Union Soldiers from crossing the Warwick River. Over time, the earthwork has eroded. To preserve the shoreline, volunteers placed sandbags, topsoil, mulch and grass seed around the area.

Monica Barnes, James River Reserve Fleet Maritime Administration program support assistant, helped with raking and seeding at Magruder Defense Line. Barnes has volunteered for Ft. Eustis’ Earth Week for 10 years and her entire office takes turns volunteering throughout the week.

“It’s a great opportunity to care for our environment,” said Barnes. “It’s important to take steps to preserve it now, because doing nothing won’t help us in the future.”

Earth Week events on Langley Air Force Base included a rain-barrel workshop, tree planting, nature trail maintenance, and invasive species and debris removal.

“Since the first earth week in 1970, the quality of both air and water in our nation has improved dramatically,” said Ronald Best, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron pollution prevention manager. “By celebrating earth week each year, we recommit ourselves to protecting the resources of our nation for future generations. These activities empower both the military and civilian community to take achievable steps to protect the natural resources we all depend on.

The 1st Fighter Wing is on its second week of ATLANTIC TRIDENT 17, an exercise at at Joint Base LangleyEustis focusing on leveraging fifth-generation fighter capabilities with partnering nations.

For the past week, U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor and F-35A Lightning II pilots have flown combat training missions with Royal air force Typhoon Eurofighter and French air force Dassault Rafale pilots to develop tactics, techniques and procedures to defeat adversaries around the world.

These anti-access/aerial denial missions, or A2AD, utilize U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle and T-38 Talon pilots as adversaries. The nature of A2AD missions provide a highly-contested environment where adversaries have the upper-hand, creating barriers that limit U.S. and allied efforts.

This month marks the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entering WWI. Col. Peter Fesler, 1st FW commander, said he looks forward to the opportunity of training with the nation’s longest-standing allies.

“We’ve been side-by-side together, the Brits, the French and the Americans in air combat,” said Fesler.

“This exercise is an extension of that. I think this is an opportunity for us to continue to refine our skills, our tactics, techniques and procedures to fight the war that we all know is coming. We don’t know where, we don’t know when; but we know it’s coming, and we’ve got to be ready to fight together.”

In addition to the A2AD training, the U.S. Air Force and French air force are scheduled to display their capabilities with aerial demonstrations provided by the F-22 Demo Team and the Patrouille de France.

JBLE Family Child Care Program

The Joint Base Langley-Eustis Family Child Care Program is looking for child care providers. They are searching for those interested in a professional, portable career that will allow those to stay at home and run a homebased business.

The program is available for children ages two weeks to 12 years old. Child care providers must be at least 18 years old be able to read and speak English, be in good health, and willing to undergo a background check.

The FCC will provide training and materials to get your business started. Training may include First Aid, CPR, health, safety, developmentally appropriate practices and child guidance. All individuals providing child care in their home for more than 10 hours a week must be licensed.
