Rooted in faith: Airman provides family, haven for orphans

As a U.S. Air Force first sergeant, Chief Master Sergeant Henry Hayes’ job is to take care of others, and whether or not they are in his chain of command, he provides support to those in need.

As a first sergeant for Air Combat Command and an ordained minister , Hayes not only shapes the lives of Airmen, but the lives of the children he and his wife, Stephanie, have fostered or adopted.

Deeply rooted in faith, the Hayes’ said they have always gravitated toward serving those who are, at times, helpless.

“Giving to those who cannot give back is what the true essence of giving is,” said Hayes, who has fostered 13 children and adopted two. “We know society does not produce great and glorious things for everyone, and if we’re able to offset pain or discomfort and reshape the future for someone else, why not.”

For the Hayes’, the motivation for adopting 10 year old Jaylan and Shania, and foster care of others, wasn’t to fill an empty nest after their biological children went to college.

The reason was, and still is, to either provide safety and wellbeing until a family is ready to be reunited, or provide a new home for those who would otherwise fall into an institution.

“This family is the model of some sacrifice; I can’t skirt around that,” said Hayes. “With Jaylan, he’s special needs and he had been in our home for quite a while and he had significant health issues. At the time that we were running into the state time limit, it was apparent that reunification was not going to take place, so for him the question was posed, ‘if we don’t have a home for him it would be an institution type situation.’ He had come so far and made so many strides. He was ours so there was no way we were going to do that.”

According to Hayes, some of that sacrifice also came in the form of adjusting to the children’s needs due to their backgrounds, such as drug addiction, abandonment or physical danger.

“The things you have to endure potentially could be challenging,” said Hayes. “We’ve had some children that had some unique difficulties to navigate through; big picture, we provide a safe haven.”

For two, that haven will last a lifetime.

“Some stayed a few days, some stayed a few months, and obviously, these two stayed several years, but they have their permanency now,” said Hayes. “There are some people who are too afraid that they’ll get hurt or too attached, if you don’t, you’re wrong.”

Since making the choice to adopt and foster, the Hayes’ found many challenges obsolete compared to the reward of

not only helping others, but strengthening their family as a whole.

“Our older two are very compassionate,” said Stephanie.

“They had to learn a lot--they had to share mom and dad and their homes. Our youngest daughter used to say that she had ten siblings because we still counted the kids even after they left.”

For Stephanie and Chief, it was the same; they saw every child that came through their door as their own.

“They’re our children, even the ones that didn’t stay,” said Stephanie. “Every child that came into our home, it was like we birthed them as our own.”

From taking multiple trips to Disney, to helping their kids with homework, the Hayes’ provided a feeling of belonging.

However, that support didn’t end with these foster parents.

“The military does make it easier; you have that comfort and acceptance,” said Hayes. “Our church (also) accepted them and loved on them. Every place that we’ve gone has been like that – these are our children and our faith plays a big part in that.”

With spirituality and strong values, the Hayes’ continue their journey in helping the helpless, and urge others to do the same.

“One of the things that pains my heart a little bit is that we talk about what we don’t like in society, but we don’t do enough to mitigate it,” said Hayes. “With bringing a child into your home, I’ve heard ‘you’re taking a chance, you don’t know what you’re going to get’ – well, same with birthing a child, you don’t know what you’re going to get.”

As for the gamble of having biological children and adopting children, the Hayes’ found love, family and faith in both.

“If you’re going to do foster care and do it right, they become yours,” said Stephanie. “You open up your heart and accept them as your child whether they’re there a day or there for life. I told Shania one time, that with the other two we had no choice, these two we chose, so there is something special in that.”

TIPS FOR PEAK PCS SEASON By 733rd Logistics Readiness Squadron PERSONAL PROPERTY PROCESSING OFFICE

Transitioning to a new permanent change of station can be exciting, yet a hectic experience for service members and their family, particularly during the summer peak-moving season.

The primary goal of the 733rd Logistics Readiness Squadron personal property processing office is to provide personnel with necessary information to help ensure that they are adequately prepared for all phases of their PCS move, such as pre-move, packing, shipment pick-up and delivery at the final destination.

According to the personnel at the 733rd LRS, who have learned from years of experience, playing an active role in planning the movement of a member ’s personal effects is absolutely essential. They have assembled a list of ideas and suggestions to help ensure sure service members and their families have a smooth and successful moving experience. · When possible try to schedule move dates on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Avoid Monday and Friday. · Avoid the last week of any month as tensions, delays and cancelations increase due to the sheer volume

of moves. · Provide Joint Personal property Shipping Office counselors legible orders and documents that can be read. · Start working on securing move dates immediately after PCS orders are in hand. Any delay will limit JPPSO’s ability to accommodate service members’ preferred dates. · Provide JPPSO counselors alternate move out dates that are at least two weeks out from the original date. · Be aware that due to overall carrier capacity issues we may need to utilize origin storage in order to get you property picked up. If so, this could delay or add time to your delivery at destination. · If pressed for time, seek alternate modes or sources of transportation during such as a Personally Procured Move, formerly known as a Do-It-Yourself Move, as an option. · Avoid making major decisions or commitments until move dates are confirmed with the Transportation Service Provider or carrier.

SHARP Soldiers awarded for protecting, assisting their own

As the sexual assault response coordinator for an Army Reserve command that is stretched out over five Midwestern states, Tiffany Griffin spends a lot of time on the road, online, or on the phone helping victims of sexual assault, or teaching other Soldiers how to prevent them.

In one recent case, she spent days talking and exchanging emails with a female Soldier who had been attacked. The woman later thanked Griffin, saying her dedication made her believe in the Army’s Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention program, a program she initially had doubts about.

“It makes me feel great, like I really accomplished something,” said Griffin, who is also a staff sergeant in the Army Reserve.

“It’s a hard, stressful job, but it can be very, very rewarding at the same time.”

That sort of outreach, among her other efforts, is why Griffin was named the Army SARC of the Year for 2017. She received the award Wednesday during a ceremony at the Pentagon, which coincided with the kickoff for Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month.

Also honored at the event was Sgt. 1st Class Stephanie Kennett of the Mississippi National Guard. She was named the National Guard Bureau’s SARC of the Year.

Additionally, the SHARP team at Fort Polk, Louisiana, earned the Defense Department’s Sexual Assault Prevention Innovation Award for their multiple programs.

For Griffin, victim resources at the 103rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) aren’t as plentiful as one may see at activeduty installations, she said, so she guides Soldiers to local programs off base.

One such resource has been the Department of Veterans Affairs, which expanded access of its mental health treatment program to victims of rape, sexual assault or harassment in 2014. This has allowed National Guard and Army Reserve members to get care even if their incident didn’t occur on active service or in training.

The VA also doesn’t report those assaults back to the Soldier’s unit, Griffin said, which may lead to more victims seeking care.

“Even though we’re so many years into the [SHARP] program,” she said, “people are still very fearful of that retaliation or being looked at differently.”

Griffin said she also tracks the outcomes for sex-related crimes committed by Soldiers in the command’s 60-plus units.

“I track the case from start to finish,” she said. “That way, depending on what the adjudication is, we’ll separate them.”

HAND IN HAND WITH POLICE As a former sheriff’s deputy, Kennett frequently steps back into her element to bridge the civilian-military gap and assist Mississippi law enforcement in learning how to deal with those who’ve been through one of those crimes.

As part of realistic training, she said, victim advocates from her office will serve as role players, while police officers respond to a mock domestic violence call, which can sometimes involve a sexual assault.

That type of collaboration is important, she said, especially if and when a real-life call involves a Soldier.

“They’re able to know that we’re working with them and not against them,” she said of the local authorities. “And if they have the case ... we stand there with them.”

For the past year, Kennett has also served in a dual-hatted role as the SARC and the victim advocate coordinator. While a new SARC is being groomed to replace her, Kennett said, she still plans to continue her work in the SHARP program like she has

April 14, 2017 been doing since 2008.

“As Soldiers, we’re supposed to be protectors,” she said. “If we fail to protect our own, how does that represent who we are and how does that fall back on the community looking back at us?”

TORCH RUN At Fort Polk, Sgt. 1st Class Bethany Cortes and her team have rolled out several SHARP programs.

On March 29, they organized their second annual torch run with 4,000 Soldiers jogging around the installation in advance of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. The torch was passed down to the unit commanders to demonstrate solidarity among all of the Soldiers, who also recited a “see something, say something, do something” pledge.

The team also developed a SHARP booklet for squad leaders to use so they could discuss with their Soldiers the myths and facts of sexual assault and harassment, among other pertinent information.

Cortes said they got the idea after Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel Dailey met with squad leaders two years ago to find out

how to engage younger Soldiers.

The squad leaders, she said, told him that Soldiers were inundated with slideshows, but weren’t really walking away with learning anything new.

“They wanted something more discussion based,” she said. “We took that approach and made it into a script for squad leaders to be able to have that conversation with their squad members.”

The sturdy booklet, which is made out of polyester paper and is small enough to fit in a cargo pocket, is meant to be used by squad leaders during a break in training or when there’s free time.

“What we were finding is that the squad member remembered the information better when it came from his first-line supervisor than if it came from a SHARP rep,” she said.

Cortes, who accepted the innovation award along with Maj. Hilary Camphouse and Sgt. 1st Class Tiffany China, said they also developed a smart card that every Soldier carries in their uniform. Printed on the card are the pledge, hotline numbers, and the base commander’s SHARP initiatives.

to do to respond to sexual assault or sexual harassment,” Cortes said, adding that the card is also passed out to rotational units at the Joint Readiness Training Center.

Other efforts include a “Re-Teal” program that educates SHARP specialists each quarter on how they can be better or overcome certain problems in the SHARP program, such as a recent dip in male victim reporting.

There is also the Guardian program, which encourages junior enlisted Soldiers to positively influence their peers. Soldiers who volunteer for the program wear a Guardian t-shirt and promote SHARP initiatives at events, such as trips sponsored by the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program.

Dailey, who helped present the awards during the ceremony, urged every Soldier to take the time during sexual assault awareness month to reflect on what they can do to improve as individuals and as an organization.

Two years ago during the monthlong observance, Dailey announced the Not in my Squad initiative, which calls for young leaders to take ownership of solutions to rid the ranks of sexual assault, harassment

“We must be held accountable and maintain zero tolerance for actions that are not in keeping with our values and our profession. Such conduct is inconsistent with who we are as an Army.”

New designation to streamline Army training

An effort to streamline planning and conducting Army training recently received an important boost.

In March, the Army awarded Program of Record status to the TRADOC Capability Manager — Army Training Information System (TCM ATIS), which is working to consolidate multiple training information management systems.

The Milestone A decision came from Steffanie B. Easter, the acting assistant secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology.

“We’re pleased that the Army recognized the significance for our work to make it easier to plan, prepare, execute and assess training,” said David Bolt, chief of TCM ATIS’ systems development office, Fort Eustis, Va. Over the years, Army organizations developed more than 35 information systems to perform functions such as

scheduling training, developing training content, tracking unit training records, and accounting for Training Aids, Devices, Simulators and Simulations (TADSS).

The multiple systems create problems.

“NCOs and officers waste time entering training data into separate systems,” Bolt said. “Sometimes they are even reentering the same data into multiple systems. Using one system will save Soldiers time and reduce the costs of maintaining multiple systems.”

Now the Army plans to consolidate the systems into one, easy-to-use system that will increase efficiency and deliver training content to Soldiers when and where they need it.

The push to combine the systems gained momentum with TCM ATIS’ designation as a Program of Record, which makes ATIS part of the Army budget. It also gives the organization additional authority to ensure the consolidated system meets Army enterprise requirements.

Bolt said the consolidated system will have five capabilities: • Training management.

• Enterprise training scheduling from courses to ranges to classrooms.

• Training development for materials such as tasks, collective tasks and lesson plans.

• Army learning and content management to include many training and educational resources.

• Training resource management to track training enablers such as TADSS. Bolt said the new system will benefit operational, institutional and self-development training.

“Unit leaders will spend less time scheduling resources to support training. Educators at the schoolhouses will have better capabilities to maintain and share training and educational content.

Soldiers in charge of TADSS will improve their inventory control,” he said.

TCM ATIS is providing requirements to the Program Executive Office for En-

7 terprise Information Systems (PEO EIS), Fort Belvoir, Va., which will let contracts to companies that will develop the enterprise solution.

Col. Darby McNulty, the Integrated Personnel and Pay System — Army (IPPS-A) Program Manager under PEO EIS, looks forward to the project’s success. “As the new system is fielded, the Army will reduce the overall costs by retiring duplicative, stove-piped systems and improve performance with a netcentric, governed and architecturally compliant system,” he said.

The consolidated system’s initial capabilities are expected to come on line in FY 2021 with full capabilities expected in the next fiscal year. Until then TCM ATIS and other system owners will operate the legacy systems.

A WORLD AWAY: UFC FIGHTER AND SOLDIER REUNITE

As sweat drips from their brow, grunts can be heard as fists and feet hit punching bags and trainers’ shouts echo off the gym walls. In this moment, two gyms for mixed martial arts in Kailua, O’ahu, Hawaii, are partnering together to train, in the hopes of leading their fighters into the world of UFC and other MMA competitions.

Eleven years later, on April 6, 2017, two of those fighters met again unexpectedly on the opposite side of the continental U.S., at Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

One, a UFC fighter who first appeared in mainstream entertainment and media on the reality show “The Ultimate Fighter,” and the other, a U.S. Army combatives instructor.

U.S. Army Spc. Johnathan Cruz, who serves as a Public Health Command, Fort Bragg Atlantic animal care specialist and combatives instructor; and Brad Tavares, an American mixed-martial artist, who competes in the middleweight division of the UFC, both learned their MMA fighting styles while training together in those Hawaii gyms. Although each has utilized their skills in different capacities, they say the fundamentals have remained the same.

“It was crazy when I first walked in today, I didn’t expect to see anybody that I knew,” said Brad Tavares, UFC middleweight fighter. “It was really nice to

see someone that I know, and it kind of brought everything back from ‘back in the day’ when we used to train together.”

For Cruz, joining the Army has not only allowed him to support his family and serve his country, but also incorporate MMA when training Soldiers.

“Brad and I were actually talking about how we grew up with that warrior ethos in our head from the MMA training we received,” said Cruz. “So it’s something that I get to use now and incorporate into influencing the young minds of Soldiers, Airmen and Sailors. I get to give these service members a taste of what the warrior ethos is like through mental toughness, physical toughness, body weight exercises and team unity.”

While Soldiers gave demonstrations on different close-quarter combat team techniques, the two friends reminisced on their old stomping grounds and friends who took other paths. They spoke of the similarities and differences between their careers.

“A lot of people have this misinterpretation that we (only) do MMA,” said Cruz. “We have the ability to do that, but we try to gear more towards the operational environment and what we’re going to do in a deployed setting.”

Whether in the ring or downrange, both Tavares and Cruz agreed that having the right mindset and skills are essential for performing hand-to-hand combat in any setting.

its one person that I’m up against, and there are rules in place to keep me protected to a certain extent. I feel really fortunate to be on this trip — to see all these Soldiers.

It takes a different type of person to do (what they do),” said Tavares. “I can’t speak to what a Soldier feels before they go to battle or, when they go on deployment, it’s not just a win or a loss on their record — a loss for them could mean they’re not coming home, or a fellow comrade isn’t coming home, so the stakes are way higher.”

After the combat demonstrations concluded, Cruz and Tavares talked about their past working out together, and after 11 years and almost 5,000 miles away, it is clear the bonds these two fighters made from their training together transcends, not only time and distance, but career paths as well.

Fuel facilities supplies the ‘goods’ on, off the flightline

Outfitted in white overalls, gloves, boots, earplugs and a face shield, two U.S. Air Force Airmen cautiously perform their duties while surrounded by a shroud of vapors. They are donned in gear meant to protect them from the very substance that helps to protect lives at high altitudes. The scene resembles that of a science fiction movie— moving in slow motion as the various sounds of the flightline are subconsciously replaced by the eerie sound of shallow breaths in a mask.

At Joint Base Langley-Eustis, the Airmen assigned to the 733rd Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels facility perform one of their many responsibilities, ensuring pilots have oxygen at high altitudes.

“We use liquid oxygen to provide Aviators’ Breathing Oxygen to the T-38 (Talon) pilots, because at high altitudes the air gets thinner and they have to breath,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Benjamin Moore, 733rd LRS fuels facilities supervisor. “(According to Air Force standards,) we have to make sure the liquid oxygen is at least 99.5 percent pure. Every 90 days a sample has to be taken for inspection and sent to lab at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, in Ohio, to ensure this.”

According Moore, if the lab determines that a sample is not up to standards, the liquid oxygen tanks would have to be drained and purged, which includes heating the tank to get rid of any contami-

nants. Once the tanks are purged they would have to be slowly filled with new product.

Moore insisted that this is hardly ever the case though. He proudly announced, that most of the time the liquid oxygen is well above standards, regularly averaging between 99.7 and 99.8 percent.

While the T-38 is not the only aircraft at JBLE, James Baldwin, 733rd LRS fuels facilities fuels distribution systems operator, said due to advances in technology, liquid oxygen is not required for the F-22 Raptor.

“The more modern aircraft are set up with an on-board oxygen producing system, so they are not tied to liquid oxygen.

It’s simply an improvement in technology,” explained Baldwin. “With a lot of the older aircraft, the technology has not been retrofitted to them. Here, the F-22s don’t need it but the T-38s do and there are some aircraft (that land here) that may sometimes need it, so I generally get some heads up on that and coordinate for (liquid oxygen) support on those aircraft.”

The fuels Airmen are responsible for providing this basic necessity, are also credited with managing and maintaining the hydrant systems that provide jets with their basic necessity: jet fuel. “(Our) contractors primarily take care of receiving the jet fuel and we store it,” said Baldwin. “When the fuel is received, it is stored in four storage tanks. It goes through the quality control process and

“A lot of the buildings on base have backup generators in case they lose commercial power,” said Moore. “This is very important, especially at the hospital because you have the neonatal unit for example—they have babies who require special attention. If the power were to go offline, that’s a disaster right there. Our fuel in the generator makes it so that little guy or gal can keep going until the power comes back on.”

Despite the wide-range and impact of the responsibilities held by fuels facilities Airmen, they are proud that they play an important role in providing airpower.

“Duty to country and patriotism has kept (me doing this job for so long),” Baldwin explained. “I value the things this country represents and stands behind; the defense of it is part of that. I’ve been involved in fuels operations since 1972. I think about (retiring) from time-to-time,

but then in performing my duties here on the flightline and being a part of the flying operations, I just think to myself sometimes what I would do without this.”

Moore expressed similar sentiments as he explained what inspires him to devote himself to the mission and country.

“I like that our job touches so many aspects of the Air Force—whether it is helping a pilot breathe, keeping people in the hospital safe through generators, helping someone come home to their loved ones from deployment by fueling their plane or helping them get to the fight to help protect others—it’s all connected,” said Moore. “I want to give taxpayers a reason to be proud, it’s an important job and I like giving back to the greater good. It makes me feel like I’m making a difference and that’s part of the reason why I became an Airman.”

FEEDING THOUSANDS, EARNING BLACK BELT AMONG ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF 363RD ISRW AWARDEES

Leaders from the 363rd Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing synchronized their goals and missions, and recognized this year ’s wing-level award winners at their annual conference in March.

“Our wing award winners are outstanding,” said Chief Master Sgt. Kathryn M. Kelley, command chief, 363rd ISRW. “What these Americans do for our nation leaves me in awe, and I am so proud to serve alongside them. As professionals, they understand the importance of their mission and how it ties into national security. As Airmen, they personify some of the best our Air Force has to offer — they truly embody the Air Force core values.”

The Airman of the Year for the 363rd is Senior Airman Kathrine, 36th Intelligence Squadron, 363rd ISR Group. “Not only has she performed above her grade, being the first A1C (airman first class) to qualify in advanced targeting, she managed the squadron’s precise point mensuration program,” said Kelley. Kathrine is also a unit physical training leader, vice president of the base dorm council, campaign lead for the squadron Air Force Assistance Fund and was selected for senior airman below-the-zone.

The non-commissioned officer of the year is Technical Sgt. Joshua, 20th IS, 363rd ISRG. He is in charge of his squadron’s training branch. He deployed 129 days in support of a Joint Task Force, was the John L. Levitow award winner at the NCO academy, and led the Crisis Management Element, managing the support for 11 squadrons, Kelley said.

The senior enlisted officer of the year is Senior Master Sgt. Armando, 43rd IS, 361st ISRG. He is a squadron operations superintendent. He covered as the squadron’s chief enlisted manager for three months, and ensured uninterrupted superior support to Air Force and Joint SOF global operations and oversaw advanced training for the unit’s Tactical Systems Operators, said Kelley.

“He is also the command chief for the New Mexico Civil Air Patrol and was a Distinguished Graduate of the Senior NCO Academy.”

Sgt. Salvatore Lione, 365th ISRG. “Besides being a phenomenal first sergeant for two squadrons and the group staff, Master Sgt. Lione instructed 11 First Term Airmen Center classes, managed the Nellis dorm program, and authored a junior enlisted development course which taught 763 Airmen. He was also the district leader for Boy Scouts of America,” Kelley said.

The Volunteer of the Year for the Wing is Staff Sgt. Opal, 15th IS, 365th ISRG. She was the Wing’s Combined Federal Campaign point of contact, led the squadron’s Trunk or Treat and Holiday party, and was the co-chair for the squadron morale BBQ. She also managed a district food program, leading four personnel and preparing 4,000 pounds of food to feed 13,000 community members, Kelley said.

The Company Grade Officer of the Year is Capt. Michael, 25th IS, 361st ISRG. He deployed as a Special Operations Forces ISR Detachment commander, Kelley said. He was also awarded the Distinguished Graduate recognition at Squadron Officer School, and received his black belt in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program.

The Field Grade Officer of the Year is Maj. Aaron Eggers, 43rd IS, 361st ISRG. Eggers commanded 83 deployed Airmen who amassed over 3,500 combat sorties in direct support to U.S. Special Forces. He aided foreign relations with the government of Qatar, and is a Lance P. Sijan Leadership Award winner.

The Category I Civilian of the Year is Trisha Lueders, 20th IS, 363rd ISRG. She is the 20th IS commander ’s secretary, and single handedly coordinated 200 higher headquarters taskers while ensuring a 100 percent ontime delivery rate, Kelley said. “As the unit’s sole approver of Defense Travel System actions, she has saved members $18,000. She is instrumental in the management of official records, staff communications and meetings,” she said. Lueders is a strong leader of base and local community volunteer programs and helped raise over $10,000 for her unit and charities, Kelley added.

quest which secured two 179-day FY17 authorizations and facilitated five ISR system hatch repairs that solidified 90 percent equipment availability and supported 760 training sorties.

The Category III Civilian of the Year is Jimmy Washington, 57th IS, 365th ISRG. He is an electronics engineer who collaborated with Air Force Research Laboratory and Institute of Technology and gained access to a $30 million high-powered computing resource, ultimately saving 700 hours per year. He executed a software initiative and developed prediction codes for an $800,000 configuration, increasing the modeling speed 500 times.

Through the meetings and planning sessions at the wing’s annual sync conference, commanders synchronized their goals and prepared to complete missions together.

“The conference was extremely important to us as a new wing,” said Col. Michael Stevenson, commander, 363rd ISRW. “We have a lot of processes that we are trying to normalize, and we can’t look back on how we’ve always done things. Our number one goal as a wing staff for the past year has been to ‘become normal,’ as we now have enough people to perform the majority of normal wing staff functions. I am determined to turn over to my successor a normal, functioning Air Force ISR Wing, and this week was a big part of getting us to the finish line on that goal.”

ACC Military Treatment Facility leadership conference stresses Trusted Care

If medical error could be classified as a disease, it would rank as the third deadliest disease in America. A medical error is a mistake by a medical provider which results in harm to a patient. For example, misdiagnosis of a condition or administering the improper dosage of a medicine.

The Military Health System found that it was no more immune to making preventable errors than civilian treatment facilities. Following an independent review in 2014, which rated the MHS better than average, the Air Force Medical Service recognized areas for improvement and set about to emphasize a renewed focus on a culture of safety within its facilities. The goal: Zero Harm.

“The only way to stop (preventable errors) is to admit them and go in the direction we are going, an open environment to identify where errors are before they cause patient harm,” said Brig.

Trusted Care, the Air Force’s platform to reach its Zero Harm goal, was a main topic of discussion at the 2nd Annual Military Treatment Facility Leadership Conference at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, April 5-6. The MTF leaders also discussed manning, training and access to care initiatives.

To reach their goal, the medical community looked to the aviation and nuclear fields to improve their internal processes. Aviation underwent a culture change from embracing the idea of acceptable losses to standardizing practices and empowering their Airmen, regardless of rank, to police their organizations for safety violations. The end result was a huge drop-off in fatal aircraft accidents and loss of aircraft. The High Reliability Organization model, which is based on organizations which perform high risk activities with little-to-no catastrophic failure, is an aid to MTFs across the Air Force as they continue to improve standard safety practices.

We’re the military health system taking care of the best population you could ever take care of — the men and women of that go and fight and defend our way of life. They deserve excellence,” said Murphy.

Lt. Col. Christian Lyons, the Air Force Surgeon General Trusted Care lead, briefed the conference attendees on Trusted Care and tools to use when incorporating it into their MTFs with their staff. He stressed that each leader provide the “why” behind Trusted Care.

Lyons shared a personal story from his experience as a junior physical therapist at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. While serving there he had the opportunity to work with a Navy explosive ordnance disposal technician who had suffered a stroke. The man, who was in his mid-30s, had paralysis and was unable to stand on his own when he reported to Lyons’ clinic for treatment. Over the course of the treatment Lyons was able to help the patient stand, walk and even run again.

“I cannot tell you the joy in that man’s face when he could do all those things again,” said Lyons, his voice breaking with emotion. “And let me tell you what, I don’t know how he did it, but he applied for his naval commission, and he got it. One day I am sitting in the clinic and this ensign comes up to our clinic in his dress whites, and he has a whole gaggle of people with him. Walks through the front door of the clinic, and he asks me to come outside. Stands sharply at attention and renders the sharpest salute. And he tells me, in front of everybody there, ‘I want everybody to meet the man who taught me how to walk again.’”

Lyons said that was his why, the reason he was working in his current Trusted Care role. He felt that all service members and their families were entitled to that level of care and patient centeredness. He would want that for his own children as they were given care at a facility.

He charged them to be involved in their facilities and to walk their respective “flight lines.” The leaders were asked to present how they would make an impact at their own MTF once they returned from the conference.

Col. Paul Willingham, 49th Medical Group commander, out of Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, said living up to their unit motto was his paramount goal. The motto: A great place for care, a great place to give care.

“For me,” he said, “it’ll be about setting the example for my staff such that we continue to move toward full transparency in the interests of creating a just healthcare atmosphere for our patients and our staff. They deserve nothing less.”

April is Sexually Transmitted Diseases Awareness Month and it is important to get tested. Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Games

Tax center now open

The Langley Tax Center is now open! Assistance is available at the walk-in kiosks for self-file or call for an appointment at 225-5777 for additional income tax assistance during the hours of 8 a.m.-12 p.m., MondayFriday.

The tax center is located at 402 Helms Ave., Langley Air Force Base, Va., Bldg. 801 on the basement level.

Parking is located in the back of the building. If entering the building from the front or back entrance, use the stairwell in the lobby to access the tax center on the basement level. The elevator does not work, so call in advance for assistance down the stairs.

Again, an appointment is not required to use the kiosks—the kiosks are available between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. during the duty day. When using the kiosk, access Military OneSource, an online resource that offers free software to help prepare and file taxes online.

A consultant is available to answer any question regarding Military OneSource for free during the tax season, Jan. through April 18, 2017, at 800-342-9647 while at the tax center or home. When using the kiosks, access to other free tax preparation sites will be available to help individuals prepare their taxes on their own. Military OneSource suggests that before starting on your tax return, gather all necessary tax documents and additional information such as the following: • Social Security numbers and dates of birth for you, your spouse and dependents • Child care, education and adoption costs • W-2 forms for all employers for you and your spouse • Investment income forms • Alimony information • Social Security benefits • Miscellaneous income • Form 1098-E for student loan interest • Form 1098 for home mortgage interest • Charitable donations • Medical and dental expenses • Real estate taxes • Rental property incomes and expenses For more information, call the Tax Center at 2255777.

Fort Eustis Family Homes 2017 Housing Survey

Ft. Eustis Family Homes residents are currently being asked to give feedback on housing operations through the Resident Satisfaction Survey. The annual survey, an important part of the housing management office’s continuous improvement program, helps the management personnel analyze performance and make any necessary changes or enhancements to ensure they consistently deliver quality service across all aspects of community operations. Residents will be receiving an email from CEL & Associates with a link to the online survey. All surveys are confidential and anonymous.
