UFC ATHLETES, MMA NOTABLES RETURN TO JBLE Four top ranked athletes from the Ultimate Fighting Championship and three Mixed Martial Arts celebrities will visit Joint Base Langley-Eustis, April 6 through 8, 2017. The group will visit various locations throughout the installations to meet-and-greet with the JBLE community.

The visiting UFC fighters are Brad Tavares, Todd Duffee, Kevin “The Motown Phenom” Lee, Felice “Lil Bulldog” Herrig.

Tavares is a UFC Middleweight.

After starting off his career 5-0, Tavares debuted in the UFC on the reality show “The Ultimate Fighter”. Since his stint on TUF, Tavares has had 13 fights in the UFC scoring victories over Phil Baroni, Lorenz Larkin and Nate Marquardt. He is coming off of a win over Caio Magalhaes at UFC 203 in September 2016. A Hawaiian at heart, Tavares now lives in Las Vegas and trains at Xtreme Couture.

Duffee is a UFC heavyweight who has fought in organizations all over the world including the UFC, Super Fight League and Dream. He holds the fastest KO in the UFC heavyweight history at seven seconds. All of Duffee’s victories have come by way of KO. Duffee has also worked in some acting roles and was on the cover of Muscle & Fitness magazine.

Lee is a UFC Lightweight who is currently on a three-fight win streak and is 15-2 overall. He won his last fight via second round submission over Francisco Trinaldo, earning a Main Event headline tilt at the UFC’s upcoming Fight Night 112 card. Lee lives and trains out of Las Vegas at Xtreme Couture.

Four top ranked athletes from the Ultimate Fighting Championship and two Mixed Martial Arts celebrities will visit Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., on April 6 through 8, 2017. The group will visit various locations throughout the instillation to meet-and-greet with the JBLE community.

Herrig is currently the number 12 ranked strawweight in the UFC. Herrig started her career in Kickboxing and Muay Thai before transitioning into MMA, where she would compete in Bellator, Invicta and the UFC. Herrig was also featured on the Fight Girls reality show as well as the Ultimate Fighter and American Ninja Warrior.

She is currently on a two-fight winning streak that includes victories over notables Kailin Curran and Alexa Grasso.

Joining them are MMA celebrities “Gorgeous” George Garcia, Brian “Goze” Garcia and Jacob “Stitch” Duran.

Duran, an Air Force veteran, has been a lifetime martial artist turned professional cutman for Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts. Stitch has worked with boxers like Andre Ward, Chris Algeri and the Klitschko brothers. Duran has also appeared in movies such as Here Comes the Boom, Oceans 11 and

Creed. In 2010 “From the Fields to the Garden” Duran’s Autobiography was released. His follow up was released in December 2016.

The Garcia brothers are the hosts of the award winning MMAjunkie Radio. In 2013 George and Goze visited troops in Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan.

They are five-time world MMA award winners for best media source.

“There is no greater honor for us than when we get to meet the heroes that defend our freedom every day,” Garcia said. “I can speak for the athletes and Stitch when I say that we intend to shake every hand, talk to and hang out with every person that comes out to the event(s). We all have such immense respect for service members and their families.”

Service members honor Women’s History Month

Members of the Joint Base LangleyEustis community gathered to celebrate those who have challenged the role of women, in both business and the paid labor force, during a ceremony at Fort Eustis, March 31, 2017.

Women’s History Month began in 1978 as a local week-long celebration in Santa Rosa, California. The organizers chose that particular week of March 8th as it would coincide with International Women’s Day. In 1987, Congress ofďŹ cially declared March as National Women’s History Month. “We are proud of our Nation’s achievements in promoting women’s full participation in all aspects of American life and are resolute in our commitment to supporting women’s continued advance-

ment in America and around the world,â€? said U.S. President Donald J. Trump in his 2017 Women’s History Month proclamation. “America will continue to ďŹ ght for women’s rights and equality across the country and around the world.â€?

In conjunction with the National Women’s History Project, this year’s theme ‘Trailblazing women in labor and business,’ payed tribute to women, of all ethnicities, who have fought against pay inequalities, gender discrimination and sexual harassment over the past three centuries.

During the ceremony, attendees viewed slides recognizing 13 honorees, including Barbara Hackman Franklin, former Secretary of Commerce, Barbara “Dustyâ€? Roads, the Flight Attendant’s Union leader, Maggie Lena Walker, the ďŹ rst woman to charter a bank, and Nor-

ma Yaegar, the ďŹ rst woman stockbroker to be permitted on the oor of the New York Stock Exchange to demonstrate that women can be successful in every ďŹ eld.

Claudia Lynch, U.S. Army Support Activity Deputy Command judge advocate and guest speaker for the ceremony, mentioned the women in her life, such as her grandmothers and coworkers, and how they taught her to ďŹ ght against injustice and stand up for those who couldn’t stand up for themselves. Lynch encouraged both men and women to continue ďŹ ghting for women’s rights and to remember the ordinary women who came before them that did something extraordinary. “The truth is, although the ďŹ ght for women’s rights has gained tremendous strides since 1851, the ďŹ ght continues,â€? said Lynch. “I believe each honoree is an ordinary woman whose action resulted in an extraordinary result or achievement.â€?

Special events include the Young Lives, Big Stories contest, where military children are invited to share their experiences and win prizes, and Operation Megaphone, where military teens join with others in a worldwide lock-in scheduled for April 28 and 29.

WHAT CONTINUED EFFORTS ARE PLANNED FOR THE FUTURE? As the nation prepares for the future, the Army recognizes that children will continue to experience and work through the challenges of relocations, deployments, reintegration and, if needed, care for their wounded Soldier parent.

Hiring event for JBLE community The Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Airman & Family Readiness Center and Soldier for Life-Transition Assistance Program will collaborate with the Hampton Roads Community Foundation to sponsor a live hiring event, May 2, 2017 at 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. at Christopher Newport University in Newport News.

The event is designed to provide service members transitioning out of the military, veterans and military spouses the opportunity to interview with hiring managers from various industries.

Registration for the event is free, but must be completed online no later than April 28, 2017 at 12 a.m.

A technology platform, developed by Futures Inc., will be used to pre-match registered participants with the employers participating in the event for a walk-in interview. Interview times will be scheduled to occur on the day of the event.

“This isn’t a job fair, it is an actual hiring event, when you register and submit your resume you are then matched with hiring employers,” said Flerida Taylor, A&FRC community readiness specialist.

The service members’ skills and occupational specialties will be matched to jobs of participating companies.

Army’s Community Health Promotion Council Management Workshop

Civilian employee representatives 11 installations attended the Army’s Community Health Promotion Council’s health promotion workshop at U.S. Training and Doctrine Command headquarters at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Feb. 28 through March 2, 2017.

Participants were trained on the management capability of the CHPC process at the installation level. The participants are in line to assume the Community Ready and Resilient Integrator role for their senior commanders as contracted Health Promotion Officer positions end on March 31. The C2RIs will be responsible for the management of the CHPC process at each installation.

The CHPC process is designed to help senior commanders accomplish this mission through targeted health and resiliency activities to enhance and support enduring personal readiness throughout the total Army.

Medical Command conducted the workshop while the Army Installation Management Command provided the civilian personnel to assume the CR2I duties and responsibilities.

“The CHPC provides senior commanders integration and synchronization of installation health and resilience resources to enhance individual performance and increase overall unit readiness across the Army,” said U.S. Army Col. Gary Wheeler, command surgeon for U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, during his address to the CR2I’s. “It was amazing bringing together 11 out of 12 CR2Is from TRADOC installations for the common goal to educate them in the management capabilities of the CHPC process.”

He went on to say that the council provides a health promotion governance system that allows commanders at all levels to continuously improve policies, protocols, and procedures based on a holistic approach to risk management.

chuca, Ariz.; Fort Jackson, S.C.; Fort Knox, Ky.; Fort Lee, Va.; Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; Rucker, Ala.; Fort Sill, Okla.; and the Presidio of Monterey, Calif.

Col. Elmer Speights, IMCOM training deputy chief, thanked the individuals for attending the workshop and stressed the importance of their future role.

“The role of the CR2I is a high priority for TRADOC senior leaders and we, at IMCOM, will ensure you have everything you need to take on this

additional duty,” said Speights.

“The collaboration efforts between TRADOC and IMCOM help reduce the gap between the contracted installation HPOs and IMCOM CR2Is.” He also thanked APHC for partnering with them to provide the HPO capability to the garrison civilians that attended the workshop.

With the Department of the Army release of the Enduring Personal Readiness order this past December, the Army di-

rected senior commanders at all installations to maintain relevant R2 policies, and to align resources and capabilities to requirements to effectively govern the CHPC process.

The EPR order emphasizes the intent to provide an evidence-based management process that integrates and synchronizes R2 capabilities at all echelons, remains adaptive to the environment and efficiently matches resources to requirements.

STOPPING SEXUAL ASSAULT – NOT JUST IN APRIL

The truth is, the vast majority of Airmen we serve alongside have never – and will never – sexually assault another person in their lifetime. Let me say it again for the people in the back – the vast majority of our Airmen HAVE NEVER and WILL NEVER harm another person. Hard stop.

But the ability and the responsibility to stop sexual assault does not begin and end here. Every survivor, and every Airman who has ever served in a unit impacted by these acts, can tell you first hand it has the same effects as a natural disaster. It’s very real, very devastating and leaves a trail of total destruction in its wake.

Airmen are the heart of our Air Force.

With Airmen, the mission will never fail; without them, the mission will not succeed. And sexual assault deeply and severely impacts our ability to perform the mission.

Every Airman, on their own or together

in a group, has the ability to stop this behavior in its tracks. April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, but putting an end to this devastation within our ranks requires each of us to be engaged, every day, all year round.

Every Airman who demands professionalism in their workplace and in their unit, who insists their fellow Airmen treat each other with dignity and respect, and who enforces professionalism through their words and their deeds is taking action to eliminate assault. Every Airman who embodies our core values every day, on and off duty, in and out of uniform, is supporting a survivor, whether they realize it or not.

Our Airmen are the best the world has ever seen. They’re the best at what they do – from fighting fires to calling in air strikes to defending our bases. Our Airmen are also our best asset for stopping a sexual assault before it happens. Their professionalism and dedication is what generates air-

power and allows us to fly, flight and win.

That same dedication, when applied to taking care of their fellow Airmen, is what will eliminate these damaging behaviors from our ranks.

People sometimes define integrity as “doing what’s right when no one is looking.” Integrity is also doing what’s right when EVERYONE is looking. Understanding how to recognize opportunities for intervention is what stops unsafe or unacceptable behaviors. That can be learned, and it’s fairly easy. Speaking up when no one else has – that’s the hard part.

But I promise you, when a situation arises that just doesn’t “feel right” or when someone isn’t doing what’s right, there are other Airmen hoping someone will speak up. That someone is you. Your fellow Airmen are looking to you to have the courage to speak up, to do the right thing when no one else will.

The vast majority of Airmen will never sexually assault another person. But EV-

SOLDIERS PARTNER WITH COLLEGE OF WILLIAM & MARY FOR TRACK AND FIELD MEET

U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to Echo Company, 266th Quartermaster Battalion, 23rd Quartermaster Brigade put their text books aside for a day to volunteer with the College of William & Mary during a track and field meet in Williamsburg, April 1, 2017.

The event, which is the largest scored meet in the country, brought together 65 different colleges and universities, to include 55 men’s and 62 women’s groups, as well as 34 high school teams from six states.

“Running an athletic event, such as a track meet, takes a lot of manpower and coordination of officials and volunteers,” said Alex Heacock, College of William & Mary track and field interim

director. “The service of [the] soldiers is an immense help to us, visiting teams and the competing athletes, as it greatly adds to the quality and efficiency of how the meet is run.”

Echo Co. has provided similar support to William & Mary in the past, to include gymnastics meets, football and basketball games. While volunteering, the Soldiers assisted at the high jump, long jump, javelin and various stations in addition to helping with the coordination, set up and clean-up of the meet.

Also during the event, U.S. Army Capt. Jamar Jenkins, Echo Company, 266th Quartermaster Battalion, 23rd Quartermaster Brigade commander, conducted a promotion ceremony for three privates and thanked the audience, participants and coordinators for their continued support of the military

community.

“What we’ve been able to do is leverage a partnership with our community,” said. Jenkins. “When we talk to our Soldiers about what it means to be in the Army, a big part of it is that we are a part of the community as a whole so it’s important for us to teach these Soldiers that and to help out any way we can.”

In addition to volunteering, the Soldiers participated in a 400 meter relay race to demonstrate the Army’s capabilities and to build esprit de corps within their unit.

“Our soldiers have been raving about this for the last three weeks and they’ve been competing to try to stack teams by classes,” said Jenkins. “So they not only worked but actually participated in the event and we really appreciate William and Mary for allowing us to do this. I

know my Soldiers loved it.”

According to Heacock, he looks forward to continuing the partnership with the Soldiers and any other units interested in volunteering, in the hopes of showing appreciation to service members and growing the bonds with community members.

“These types of partnerships further the understanding of the sacrifices that service men and women make on behalf of all Americans, [by] fostering face-to-face contact between the military and civilians,” said Heacock.

“These partnerships provide very natural opportunities for groups of soldiers to be recognized and appreciated for their service, something that each and every one of them greatly deserve and there is no way that you can put a price tag on that.”

SECRETARY OF THE AIR FORCE PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein discussed the Air Force’s role in a networked and multidomain environment during the Future of War Conference 2017 in Washington, D.C., March 21.

Goldfein emphasized the role of fusion warfare in the future of the force.

“The key … is network,” he explained. “How do we network military capability so that we can … create this common operational picture for a decision maker, so we can achieve a decision speed that our adversaries can never match?”

A robust network will give the Air Force the ability to sense the globe through the six domains of air, land, sea, space, cyberspace and undersea, and merge that data into operational information for commanders.

As warfare evolves, air superiority will continue to be paramount to the success of the U.S. military. Goldfein defined air superiority as freedom from attack, to attack, and to maneuver. However, “Air superiority is not an American birthright,” he said.

“We take that very seriously. When a Soldier, Sailor, Airman or Marine is on the ground and they hear a jet

noise, I don’t want them looking up – ever,” he said. “I want them to always know it’s me, so they can keep their eye on the enemy and do what they have to do.”

Air superiority begins with global reach and global power, Goldfein explained. Roughly every two minutes, aircraft are taking off somewhere on the planet, delivering personnel or supplies where needed.

Future requirements mean the Air Force has to grow, and needs talented people.

“We’re always thinking about our shortfalls, how we move forward to ensure we have the size force we need to be able to dominate those domains, especially in the global security environment … we’re all in competition for talent,” Goldfein said.

While Goldfein said the Air Force is mission ready today, he also noted future challenges include networking and building the capacity for simultaneous operations.

“Do I have the force that’s required to sustain the current fight, at its current operational tempo for the next 10 years, if that’s all I was doing? My answer is – absolutely, yes,” he said.

However, Goldfein also said the service must move beyond discussions of platforms and hardware and begin to focus on the networks they operate in. If the Air Force can do that, it will produce effects no enemy on the planet can counter.

“That, to me, is the center of mass for the future,” he said.

PREVENTION PROTECTS PETS FROM PESKY DISEASES

Ringworm, Lyme disease, and roundworms are just a few of the diseases pets can contract from fleas, ticks and heartworms.

Fortunately for military families in the local area, the veterinary clinics at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, provide services that enable pet parents to protect their animals and families from possibly contracting these diseases.

While some pet owners may only treat for fleas, ticks and heartworms during the warmer months, veterinary personnel recommend treating them year-round to prevent the development of diseases brought on by these parasites.

“Many people think they only need to treat in the summer when we see the most mosquitoes and ticks,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Christopher Treftz, Fort Eustis Veterinary Treatment Clinic NCO in charge. “But if you’re not treating year-round, your pet could be bitten by these parasites as soon as the treatment you’ve given them wears off.”

According to the American Heartworm Society, although heartworm disease is seen more in the warmer southern states, it has been reported year-round in all 50 states.

During a pets annual exam, veterinarians and technicians at JBLE recommend testing for heartworm disease, a test which only takes about 10 minutes, but could save pet owners money if the disease is caught early.

“Prevention medication is considerably cheaper than spending several hundred dollars on treatment after an animal has been diagnosed with heartworm disease,” said Dr. Claire Lowery, Langley Veterinary Clinic veterinarian. “And unfortunately, the treatment is very aggressive on the animal and isn’t always guaranteed to work.”

Though heartworm primarily affects pets, ringworm and many other diseases have the possibility of being transmitted to humans who come in contact with the animal. To prevent infection of pets and humans, veterinarians recommend treating both indoor and outdoor pets.

“Some people only treat their outdoor pets because they think they’re the only ones exposed to parasites,” said Treftz. “Parasites can live on the skin for a few days before they die so if an outside pet brings them in and lies on bedding in the house, then it spreads to the indoor pets who lay on that bedding, then the humans [that] pet the animals get it.”

Both veterinary clinics at JBLE provide medications, and provide online pharmacy price comparison list and can make recommendations for individual pet needs.

The Langley Tax Center is now open! Assistance is available at the walk-in kiosks for self-file or call for an appointment at 225-5777 for additional income tax assistance during the hours of 8 a.m.-12 p.m., Monday-Friday.

The tax center is located at 402 Helms Ave., Langley Air Force Base, Va., Bldg. 801 on the basement level.

Parking is located in the back of the building. If entering the building from the front or back entrance, use the stairwell in the lobby to access the tax center on the basement level. The elevator does not work, so call in advance for assistance down the stairs.

Again, an appointment is not required to use the kiosks—the kiosks are available between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. during the duty day. When using the kiosk, access Military OneSource, an online resource that offers free software to help prepare and file taxes online.

A consultant is available to answer any question regarding Military OneSource for free during the tax season, Jan. through April 18, 2017, at 800-342-9647 while at the tax center or home. When using the kiosks, access to other free tax preparation sites will be available to help individuals prepare their taxes on their own. Advice from the Inspector General before you call: • Give your chain of command a chance to resolve the problem first • Be honest and don’t provide misleading information • Be sure you have a problem, not just a peeve • Remember IGs can only resolve a case on the basis of fact • Don’t expect instant action on your request.

Be patient • Be prepared to take “no” for the answer • Keep in mind that IGs are not policymakers • Keep in mind that IGs can only recommend,

not order a resolution • If IG assistance is needed, contact your local IG first • To complain without fear of reprisal is the right of any Soldier, civilian or family member seeking IG help

Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Games

The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team will play one game against the Newport News Police Department and one game against the Newport News Fire Department on April 15, 2017 at 12 p.m. The location of the game will be at Stoney Run Athletic Complex, 15194 Warwick Blvd, Newport News, Va. 23608.

Fort Eustis Tax Center is now open

The Fort Eustis Tax Center is open until April 14, 2017 for in-person advice for active duty members, retirees and dependents. The center will open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday for walk-in services.

From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday by appointment only for active duty members. Members should bring their W-2, 1099-R, 1098-T, interest or brokerage states, dependent care statements, mortgage statements, rental property statements and last year’s tax return to their appointments. Virginia War Memorial 5K

The Virginia War Memorial 5K Run-Walk to Remember will be held April 22, 2017 at 8 a.m. at the Virginia War Memorial and Hollywood Cemetery. Units who run in formation will compete for the Priority Automotive Spirit Cup. To participate in the Command Run, five runners must be registered from the command with the lowest combined time will win. To register or for more information, call 804-786-9700.

Company Grade Officer Council welcomes members

The Company Grade Officer Council will meet at 4:45 p.m. at the Bayview Commonwealth Center every third Thursday of the month and is open to all Company Grade Officers. Fort Eustis’ Groninger Library encourages reading

Fort Eustis’ Groninger Library has implemented an ongoing Reading Program entitled “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” and “1000 Books from 1st -5th grades.” For every 100 books read, children can take their reading log to the library to receive a prize. After reading 1000 books, children will receive a free t-shirt.
