FORT SAM HOUSTON, TEXAS (MARCH 9, 2016) -- The Army is transitioning to a new single portal Department of Defense website designed to make it easier for Soldiers to find the childcare they need.

In March 2016, select Army garrison families will begin to use www.

MilitaryChildCare.com as their website to search for and request child care services where they are or where they are planning to move.

"The vital function of this website is to simplify the child care search process, helping patrons make better informed decisions about their child care needs," said Theresa Sanders, the Installation Management Command Child, Youth and School Services Outreach Services Program Manager. "The DOD has worked hard to develop a system which allows patrons to create their own account, search and request care, manage requests and update their profile from the convenience of their home," she said.

Using MilitaryChildCare.com, parents can find comprehensive information on child care programs worldwide, conduct a customized search for the care they need, and submit a request for care at any time from any location, Sanders explained.

Soldiers and Families at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Forts Belvoir, Campbell, Detrick (Forest Glen and Frederick), Drum, Knox, Lee and Meade, Watervliet Arsenal and Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall will gain access to the site in March.

Each garrison is working directly to notify the families affected and assist in the implementation of the DOD website rollout.

"We expect the implementation of this new website to be seamless," said Sanders. "Those families already receiving child care services will continue to receive those services without interruption. Those whose name is already on a waiting list will be entered on the new website."

More details will be available at Parent Central Services at each garrison.

According to officials at the U.S. Army Installation Management Command, the Army will continue its rollout in June with 28 new garrisons, including: Forts Benning, Bliss, Buchanan, Bragg, Carson, Gordon, Hamilton, Hood,

Jackson, Leavenworth, Leonard Wood, McAlester, McCoy, Polk, Riley, Rucker, Sill, Stewart; Detroit, Picatinny, Pine Bluff, Redstone and Rock Island Arsenals; Anniston and Tobyhanna Army Depots; Carlisle Barracks; West Point; and U.S. Army Garrison Miami. Specific dates of access will be announced locally so that all Soldiers and caregivers will be aware of the timing of the change and how it will impact their family.

Garrisons in Europe are scheduled to follow in September, including Ansbach, Baumholder, Brussels, Garmisch, Grafenwoehr, Hohenfels, Kaiserslautern, Liverno, Schinnen, Shape, Stuttgart, Vicenza and Wiesbaden.

The final wave of garrisons is planned for December 2016: Forts Greely, Huachuca, Hunter-Liggett, Irwin, Wainwright; Joint Base Lewis-McChord; Sierra Army Depot; Dugway and Yuma Proving Grounds; White Sands Missile Range; U.S. Army Garrisons Daegu, Presidio of Monterey, Kwajalein Atoll, Japan and Yongsan; and Camps Humphries and Red Cloud.

New mentoring program to help women transition to civilian life

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, March 23, 2016) – A new mentoring partnership to assist women in their transition to civilian life was launched between the Army Reserve and non-profit American Corporate Partners at the Pentagon March 21.

Created in 2008, ACP has 2,500 service members and veterans currently paired with mentors nationwide.

Some 7,000 men and women have completed mentorships with more than 60 Fortune 500 companies as well as small businesses in a wealth of industries ranging from the financial sector to manufacturing, education and defense.

ACP’s Women’s Veterans Mentoring Program, in conjunction with Soldier for Life, will connect veterans with female entrepreneurs and business leaders for one-onone, year-long mentorships where they’ll be guided on topics ranging from building civilian-friendly resumes, refining leadership and networking skills, to managing work-life balance, officials said.

Eligibility to ACP’s nationwide mentoring program

is open to all currently serving and recently separated veterans who have served on active-duty at least 180 days since 9/11. The program is also open to those who were unable to meet the six-month requirement if injured while serving as well as to surviving spouses and spouses of severely wounded post-9/11 veterans.

ACP founder and chair Sidney Goodfriend, who spoke at the ceremony, said service members still on active duty but slated to separate or retire in a year are welcome to file applications and that ACP can find a mentor for them before their transition from the military. He says even if separation was two years ago and the veteran took the first job that came along and is finding the position not very meaningful or challenging, that’s where ACP can help.

Goodfriend clarified that the initiative is not a formal job-placement program, rather it’s a tool for networking and long-term career development.

“The women’s program will focus on women veterans who will get women mentors who are seasoned executives from all types of different big and small companies around the country,” he said. “It’s totally nationwide… if the veteran lives in a rural area such as a small town in

southern Georgia, their mentor may be in Tampa or Atlanta so their relationship will be largely ‘virtual.’”

A retired investment banker, Goodfriend said even mentoring in big-city America can be via eye-chat and Skype, and he encouraged recording mock interviews.

“It’s one thing to practice the interview process, but it’s another thing to watch yourself being interviewed in a pretend interview – if you’re making eye contact, speaking in complete sentences, if you’re prepared and really show a sense of commitment to the interviewer on why you want to work there,” he said. “And here’s why: after 10, 15, 20 years in the military, many service members have never been through a private-sector hiring process before.”

As an example, he relayed the story of a Soldier who submitted a five-page resume with more than a handful of acronyms to an ACP reviewer. The reviewer told the Soldier that an interviewer with a Fortune 500 company doesn’t have time or inclination to wade through a resume that’s more than one page – “we’ve got to get it on one page,” she said.

Unyielding, the Soldier said, “Ma’am, I’ve talked to the smartest people I can find – you can’t get the computer printer to print that small.”

“Get it on one page, but to him that meant font size, not editing,” Goodfriend said. “Some people like me think that’s unusual… how do you not know how to get SEE CIVILIAN PAGE 7

But the response back to me is, ‘well, do you know how to clean a rifle?’

“I’ve never received training in that and I shouldn’t be embarrassed that I don’t know how. I just never had the training, so why should we expect our Soldiers or members from other services to necessarily have the same type of training I’ve had?” he said.

“So we work with people in different ways, depending on what their needs are,” he said. “Some people have no idea what they want to do.

Some people are thinking of going back to school and don’t know what to study; some people are starting their own business and don’t know anything about financing that business, so we work with service members to find out what they want to achieve.”

As a young African-American U.S. Army private sat in a field hospital bandaged from headto-toe, drinking a meal-replacement shake through a straw with bruised and disfigured lips, he couldn’t imagine that experiences more grueling than war were in his future.

Drafted out of high school at the age of 18 in 1943, then-U.S. Army Pvt. Aaron M. Dotson’s career began long before blacks and whites shared the same water fountains, much less the same area on the battlefield. The social implications of that time made his fight to both commission and gain acceptance from his peers the most challenging trials of his life.

The now-retired World War II and Vietnam War veteran recalls the significance of his career as an African American serving in the Army. His fight for equal rights within the Army began the moment he walked into an Army Reserve recruiting station. Having earned a master’s degree in clinical social work in 1955, he picked up a brochure about conducting social work in the Army.

“The nation was going through a change, and the Army was a part of that change,” he explained.

“I told the officer-in-charge I wanted to apply for direct commission as a first lieutenant in the Army Medical Service Corps,” said Dotson. “He said,

‘Nah, that’s not going to happen.’”

Dotson told the recruiter he had the right to apply, and a few moments later, he could hear the lieutenant tell the sergeant at a distance, “Give him the damn papers because nothing is going to happen when they see his photo attached.”

Unabashed by the comments, Dotson asked for the paperwork to apply and returned a few days later with it filled out completely. After the normally 6-month process reached 18 months without a response, Dotson was not anticipating a favorable outcome.

After all, Dotson was “raising too much hell,” he said.

Dotson fought the system by continually calling and asking for status reports on his application. But to Dotson, the push for his application wasn’t just about him.

“I thought, ‘Maybe the next black officer won’t have to go through this. Maybe I can set the stage for him,’” he said. “I’m relentless. ‘Giving up’ and ‘can’t do’ aren’t in my vocabulary.”

To Dotson’s surprise, he finally received a letter enclosed with orders informing him to go to the nearest military installation to be sworn in as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps.

“A huge exercise that brings the whole hospital together like this really benefits our training program,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Craig Forcum, deputy commander of the 633rd Medical Group.

“It really stresses the system and allows us to see what we need to do better to prepare for an event that hopefully does not happen, however if it does we are adequately prepared.”

“Our community engagement with the Hampton Roads Strike Team helps us because they bring capabilities that we do not offer here and strengthens our existing capabilities.” said Chief Master Sgt. Richard Burgos, superintendent of the 633rd Medical Group.

While the exercise was a success according to the 633rd Medical Group, they have confidence that their training will carry into the upcoming air show.

For individuals planning to attend the open

house, Forcum suggests patrons stay hydrated, and apply sunscreen as instructed. However, for any unexpected health-related incidents, the MDG will have a first-aid tent available for all guests.

Approximately 600 active-duty Service members, civilian personnel and contractors participated in the exercise in preparation for the AirPower over Hampton Roads Open House, April 22-24th.

“A huge exercise that brings the whole hospital together like this really benefits our training program,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Craig Forcum, deputy commander of the 633rd Medical Group.

Members of the 689th Rapid Port Opening Element teamed up with the 11th Aviation Command and the 7th Transportation Brigade to conduct sling-load and casualty evacuation training, March 24, 2016, at Fort Eustis, Virginia.

The units conducted the training to give U.S. Soldiers the opportunity to practice rigging cargo and evacuating people onto aircraft. If the situation arose, the element would have to do this if roadways were destroyed or unusable for rapid transport.

“Sling-load training is essential for our team as we are a part of the nation’s global response force, and can be called upon to conduct important humanitarian assistance and disaster response operations at any given moment, anywhere in the world,” said U.S. Army Maj. Corinne Bell, commander of the 689th RPOE. As logistical first responders, the RPOE assesses and then practices the most effective way to get cargo from one place to another, especially in harsh conditions and locations such as mountainous terrain, flood conditions, earthquakes and hurricanes.

drew Wulf, a transportation coordination manager with the 689th RPOE. “It may not be the most glamorous, but it’s one of the most important jobs we can do in the Army.”

Throughout the training, the Soldiers not only practiced iterations of rigging a CH-47 Chinook with cargo crates and a high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle, weighing 5,200 pounds, but they also practiced casualty evacuations.

“It’s important for us to hone our skills to distribute cargo,” said 1st Lt. Edward McBride, 689th Trans. Det. RPOE clearance platoon leader, “If we had a situation while we were deployed it’s important that the Soldiers are comfortable with the helicopters rotor wash and other sounds while all the other ruckus is going on as an operation is taking place.”

For some of the newer transport specialists, this was their first time working with a helicopter team to move cargo.

“We don’t get to do this type of thing on an everyday basis, so when we do get a chance to set aside a whole day to practice, it sharpens our skills to know what to do in this type of situation,” said Spc. Corrina Jost, a transportation coordination manager with the 689th RPOE. “Before, I had no knowledge on what to do. Now, I feel confident in my skills sling-loading and casualty-evacuating a Chinook.”

Hampton’s historic carousel reopens

‘First Battle of Manassas’ van tour

The city of Hampton’s historic carousel is now open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, at 602 Settlers Landing Rd. The carousel is one of 100 antique wooden merry-go-rounds still existing in the United States. The cost is $1 per ride. Lee Hall Mansion will host the “First Battle of Manassas” van tour from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 16, starting at 163 Yorktown Road in Newport News.

Riverwalk Landing piers open for season

The Great Chocolate Race 10-Miler and 5K will be held from 7 to 10 a.m., April 9, at Mill Point Park at 100 Eaton St. The 10-mile race will begin at 7 a.m. and the 5K will start at 7:15 a.m. Packet pick up will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., April 8, at the Crowne Plaza Hampton Marina Hotel at 700 Settlers Landing Rd. The Riverwalk Landing piers, located on the York River in historic Yorktown, are now open through Oct. 31. The piers provide 1,200 linear feet of dockage and recreational boaters can plan overnight stays and daytrips. Electricity, water, public showers, sewer pump-out and Wi-Fi are available pier side. The Schooners Alliance and Serenity, Yorktown’s homeport ships, offer daily sailing, sunset sails and Pirate Adventure cruises. The docking costs are $5 for four hours or less and $1.75 per foot per 24 hours for five hours or more. Pier hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday through Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday.
