Small town friends become hometown heroes

Driving down the highway, foliage covering either side of the road, two friends watch in awe, as a car in front of them flips over, landing on a set of train tracks. Slamming on the brakes, they came to a screeching halt next to the crash. The friends rushed to the car and began yelling, as they searched for survivors amongst the inflated air bags and wreckage.

Conscious, the driver muttered a weak “hello,” and was found trapped between the crushed roof and back seats. The friends were shocked she managed to walk away having only suffered from minor cuts and bruises.

“We couldn’t believe she wasn’t more hurt than she actually was. How she was conscious or how she ended up in the back seat,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Daniel Brown, 633rd Comptroller Squadron protocol specialist. “We were just happy that she was alright.”

While waiting for the first responders to arrive, Brown followed the procedures he learned through his training in the Air Force, ensuring the driver did not move her neck or legs.

He also continued to have her talk, so that she would remain conscious.

According to Joey Ramsey, Brown’s friend of more than 25 years who also witnessed the crash, in their small close-knit town of Amelia, Virginia, pulling over to help someone was just something everyone does. Ramsey, a volunteer firefighter for close to 10 years, and Brown, a former combat lifesaver instructor, were well-

equipped to handle whatever the situation threw at them.

“We had to give IVs in the back of a truck going 45 miles per hour on a gravel road to prepare to go to Iraq,” said Brown. “So, when we saw the car flip, it wasn’t anything that I thought me and my buddy couldn’t handle.

We were ready and knew what we were getting ourselves into when we jumped out of the truck.”

When approaching the flipped vehicle Brown and Ramsey were unfazed.

“We were calm and we knew we had to stop,” said Ramsey. “If we didn’t stop, and that woman was seriously injured, or someone else stopped who didn’t know what to do to help, it could have made the situation a lot worse, but we knew what to do to han-

dle the situation.”

Brown encourages everybody to take the time to help if they can, and for military members to take the training they receive seriously.

“Do your civic duty; stop and assess the situation,” said Brown. “If you can help, then help, but if you can’t then let the professionals do their job. Remember, there is a fine line between helping and hurting and knowing when to stop. You just have to have your wits about you to make sure you are not hindering the situation.”

Whether in a town with only one stoplight or in the middle of a bustling city, Brown is prepared to smash glass and break through doors using the training the Air Force has equipped him with to save a life.

JBLE HOSTS ATLANTIC TRIDENT 17

U.S. Air Force Airmen will partner with the Royal Air Force and the French Air Force for a second trilateral exercise beginning April 12 through April 28, 2017, at Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

ATLANTIC TRIDENT 17, hosted by the 1st Fighter Wing, focuses on operations in a highly contested operational environment through a variety of complex, simulated adversary scenarios.

The goal of the exercise is to enhance interoperability through combined coalition aerial campaigns.

“This exercise was designed to encourage the sharing and development of air combat TTPs [tactics, techniques and procedures] with our French and U.K. partners, against a range of potential threats leveraging U.S. Air Force fifth-

generation capabilities,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Peter Fesler, 1st Fighter Wing commander. “This is not only an opportunity to share the capabilities of the aircraft, pilots and maintainers between our nations, but to build friendship, trust and confidence that will improve our interoperability as we go forward.”

While various exercises are held with allied and partner nations throughout the world, this exercise is one of the first to focus on greater integration of U.S. Air Force’s fifth-generation capabilities.

Joint Base Langley-Eustis hosted a similar exercise in December 2015, but the upcoming exercise will be uniquely valuable with the addition of the F-35 Lightning II to the training.

ATLANTIC TRIDENT 17 will feature the U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II; the RAF Eurofighter Typhoon; and the FAF Dassault Rafale.

T-38 Talons will play the roles of adversary aircraft.

U.S. Air Force E-3 Sentry and KC-10 Extender aircraft will also provide support during the exercise.

Approximately 225 U.S. Air Force, 175

RAF and 150 FAF service members will participate in the exercise. While there will be more aircraft operating from Langley Air Force Base, operations will occur during daylight hours and the level of noise should be no different than normal.

Chapel civilian wins AF Chaplain Corps OCY 2016

Sandra Pratt, 633rd Air Base Wing Chapel information and referral assistant, won the annual Air Force Chaplain Corps Outstanding Civilian of the Year award for 2016.

Nominees are selected based on three categories, including leadership and job performance, significant selfimprovement and contributing civic, cultural or professional activities in the military or civilian community.

Prior to winning the OCY award, Pratt also won the 633rd ABW Admin and Technical Civilian of the Quarter award for the fourth quarter and Civilian Category I of the Year award.

According to U.S. Air Force Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Brian McCormack, 633rd ABW chaplain, Pratt is the focal point of all administrative and ministry processes at the chapel and its associated facilities.

“She is a leader, has a great attitude, is very humble and helps out probably more than she even knows,” said McCormack. “She also helped us win the Chaplain Corps’ large chapel team of the year award for 2016.”

Some of Pratt’s duties include managing chapel calendars, vetting chaplains for weddings and other ceremonies, scheduling facility usage, processing chaplain invocations, assisting with base exercises, organizing on and off-base events, coordinating schedules for distinguished visitors and disseminating information for worship services and classes.

McCormack said Pratt’s background as an Air Force retiree is one of the reasons why she is so valuable, and understands the system.

“Her skill-set is really strong,” said McCormack.

“What she’s been able to do for us takes it up to another level because of her prior military experience.”

Describing herself as someone who does not like to be at the center of attention, Pratt says she prefers to be in the background and get the job done.

“After I won Civilian of the Quarter and Civilian of the Year for the wing, I thought that was the end of it,” said Pratt. “I didn’t know anything about the Outstanding Civilian of the Year award and when it was announced that I won – that was a shocker.”

Charting the way: Woman sets paths for others

At the age of 13 she defended her friend from the uncomfortable approaches made by an older gentleman at church. To this day she continues to be a voice for justice and equality for others.

For Claudia Lynch, who is now the Army Support Activity Deputy Command judge advocate, even the smallest achievement was an extraordinary victory.

“Whenever I see injustices I try to address it, and I have done that all my life,” said Lynch. “I always stood up for the kids that were picked on or bullied. I have always had that in me – that desire, that passion to protect those who can’t protect themselves.”

In high school and throughout college, Lynch found herself in positions which provided her with the opportunity to speak up for those who were alienated. By keeping a diplomatic approach, she used constructive ways to benefit those who felt ignored or alone.

“Diplomacy in your dealings is always beneficial, especially in the workplace,” said Lynch. “You can get more being diplomatic than disagreeable. I have employed diplomacy and I am strategic in how I deal with things because I am looking for a positive result.”

While attending Pace University, she started her career with the U.S. Army and commissioned as a first lieutenant in 1998, serving as a judge advocate for Fort Eustis. Lynch then returned to Fort Eustis’ legal office as a civilian, nine years later.

For the past 10 years, Lynch has climbed her way up the chain to become not only the deputy command judge advocate at Fort Eustis, but an example for the other women in her office.

“She is an inspiration to me,” said Sandra Jackson, ASA paralegal specialist and installation victim witness liaison. “She is a woman that not only wants to be successful herself,

but she wants to pull women up with her.”

Jackson, who has known Lynch since 2007, said she looks to Lynch as a mentor, not because of her success in her career, but because of her character, since she never allows anything to hold her back and stands up for what is right.

When it comes to seeking mentorship, Lynch has always gravitated toward women who were well-versed in their own field of work.

“I have always sought mentorship from women who were doing what I want to do,” said Lynch. “My advice for young women is to seek mentorship from other women who have gone where you desire to go or who can help you chart that path.”

As a woman in a male-dominated career field, Lynch was recently asked to be the guest speaker at an upcoming Women’s History Month event highlighting women who are trailblazers in American history.

“The more women excel, that in of itself does something to help,” said Lynch. “We are fighting against something that is engrained in people. So, you can talk about what you are supposed to do and train on that all day long, but for there to be lasting change, you have to change hearts and minds.”

Lynch believes educational campaigns and women vocalizing the need for change has been the catalyst for improvements and she encourages women of all ages to continue to speak for themselves, pushing for change.

“I feel blessed and fortunate for the opportunities that God has provided me to impact other women and especially my passion for helping women find their voice,” said Lynch.

“A woman’s viewpoint is necessary.

It adds something that a man will never be able to give. We bring a different dimension to just about everything. We are naturally visionaries.”

Lynch will speak during the Women’s History Month event at Wylie Theatre at 11 a.m. on March 31, 2017.

ACS OFFERS LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP FOR SPOUSES

Army Community Service at Joint Base Langley-Eustis hosted a Junior Leader Spouse Workshop for spouses of junior enlisted service members to discuss military traditions, provide mentoring and information about Family Readiness Groups, March 22, 2017.

The spouses gather bimonthly for these workshops to determine their leadership opportunities alongside their service member as they move up in the ranks. Some of the topics covered during the workshops include support channels, expectations and protocol.

“We have senior spouses as facilitators for the workshop, which allows participants to hear from people who have ‘walked the walk’ and can share their experiences,” said Donna Cloy, 733rd Mission Support Group Army Family Team building program manager. “The workshop is an informal setting where spouses can get some basic information, but more importantly they can ask questions from people who

have lived this life already.”

According to Cloy, building relationships, support channels and networking is a major reason they host the workshop. By providing junior spouses with a mentor, they can receive guidance regarding their new environment, which can make a difference in adjusting to military lifestyle.

Through the workshop, military spouses discover ways to make a difference with new leadership skills. These skills also show them how to get involved in their service member ’s unit, such as helping plan events or fundraisers for the units.

“Service members get a lot of training before they are placed in leadership roles, so why would we expect spouses to take on roles without giving them training as well,” asked Cloy. “We are hoping to give spouses the skills that will make it easy for them to decide to be involved in the unit and to feel prepared when they take on these roles.”

Army Community Service will host an upcoming Junior Leader Spouse Workshop for spouses at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., May 18, 2017. Spouses of junior enlisted service members will have the chance to discuss military traditions, and receive mentoring and information about Family Readiness Groups throughout the course.

Brigade instructor, attended her first workshop when she arrived to JBLE in 2014, she has since been inspired to teach resiliency and coping mechanisms to spouses at ACS. After taking every course available for spouses at the ACS, Wilson began volunteering her time to get new spouses involved in the programs. Wilson’s passion for the training encouraged her to complete two internships with ACS while in school for her Bachelor

of Science in Child and Human Services. Now working on her Master of Arts in Human Services, Wilson continues to advocate for the skills and networking ACS has to offer.

“The training at ACS empowers spouses to know what is going on with our service members,” said Wilson. “It made me want to share the knowledge I gained with other spouses and I just kept wanting to learn more so I could give back more.”

Wilson used the courses as a

stepping stone toward ensuing a fulfilling profession and continues to work to make a difference as a Master Resilience Trainer for the ACS. With classes ranging from communication time and stress management, to personal relationship and team dynamics, Wilson encourages spouses to take advantage of the courses ACS has to offer.

Leadership from the 733rd Mission Support Group and the Center for Initial Military Training hosted a town hall to address the concerns of the Fort Eustis community at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, March 24, 2017.

According to U.S. Army Col. Ralph Clayton III, 733rd MSG commander, while his staff has worked to fulfill the needs of the mission and provide service to customers, processes can always be reevaluated.

“There’s always room for improvement,” said Clayton. “We’re looking for your suggestions and comments, and we will make sure they are heard.”

The town hall was also streamed live on the installation’s Facebook page to enable participation from individuals who were unable to attend.

“This is really about being transparent and being here for you,” said Maj. Gen. Anthony Funkhouser, CIMT commander. “We’re here to make the community better and you guys at the grass roots level have the best ideas.”

During the meeting, community mem-

bers were able to vocalize their concerns to agencies across the installation about a variety of issues, from the implementation of bus stop coverings, to gaining further knowledge about the base’s concealed weapon policy.

Understanding the impact that both Ft. Eustis and its surrounding communities have on one another was one point that was emphasized throughout the discussion.

“The Joint Land Use Study looks at the impact between local communities, [their] growth and some of the environmental factors,” Clayton said. “The community will benefit by having a little bit better data in terms of the interrelationship between Eustis and the local community.”

To conclude the town hall, Clayton and Funkhouser reiterated the value of having open forums, such as these, to provide a safe atmosphere for community members and Soldiers to make their voice heard, and look forward to hosting another one in the future.

“To have an open dialogue like this allows you to get those burning questions out,” Clayton said. “You get to address some things, and we get to have the ex-

Operation Supplement Safety aims to help Airmen make informed, responsible decisions on supplement use.

Often people turn to dietary supplements as the answer to reaching fitness goals faster.

A dietary supplement is any product, such as pills, capsules, gel-caps, powders, liquids, bars, sprays, gums or gels that are intended to supplement the diet by increasing total dietary intake. Primary reasons for supplement use include muscle building, weight loss and increased energy.

You may want to think twice before taking the latest supplement.

According to a Department of Defense study, more than 20,000 Americans seek emergency treatment every year for allergic reactions or other adverse effects related to supplement use.

“Supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, and people should always take caution before using them,” said U.S. Air Force Major Scott Black, 633rd Medical Support Squadron dietitian and sports specialist in dietetics.

The FDA does not approve supplements for safety or effectiveness and some dietary supplements contain ingredients not even listed on the label. It is critical to take the time to become an informed consumer.

There are many sources with credible information about dietary sup-

plements.

Operation Supplement Safety is a Department of Defense campaign designed to provide information about responsible dietary supplement use.

The OPSS website contains several useful tools to help you learn more about dietary supplements.

If service members are wondering if someone has already asked their question, they can check out the OPSS comprehensive frequently asked questions. If they can’t find the answer, they can click the “ask the expert”, to ask the specific question.

If there is any concern if the supplement contains potentially harmful ingredients, there is a high-risk supplement list on the website to search for the supplement by brand name or review dietary supplements alerts and announcements section for the latest supplements info.

Members can also download the free OPSS high-risk supplement list app and have all the information right at their fingertips.

“If you have [additional] questions you can contact your base registered dietitian and they can help you make informed decisions regarding supplement usage,” suggests Black.

Dietary supplements are not substitutes for a healthy diet. If members choose to use them, be aware of the potential risks and consequences.

Tax center now open

The Langley Tax Center is now open! Assistance is available at the walk-in kiosks for self-file or call for an appointment at 225-5777 for additional income tax assistance during the hours of 8 a.m.-12 p.m., Monday-Friday.

The tax center is located at 402 Helms Ave., Langley Air Force Base, Va., Bldg. 801 on the basement level.

Parking is located in the back of the building. If entering the building from the front or back entrance, use the stairwell in the lobby to access the tax center on the basement level. The elevator does not work, so call in advance for assistance down the stairs.

Again, an appointment is not required to use the kiosks—the kiosks are available between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. during the duty day. When using the kiosk, access Military OneSource, an online resource that offers free software to help prepare and file taxes online.

A consultant is available to answer any question regarding Military OneSource for free during the tax season, Jan. through April 18, 2017, at 800-342-9647 while at the tax center or home. When using the ki-

osks, access to other free tax preparation sites will be available to help individuals prepare their taxes on their own.
