In 1949, U.S. Army Col. William B. Bunker, Transportation School commandant, developed an idea for the world’s first military heliport exclusively designed for helicopters.

According to records provided by the U.S. Army Transportation Museum at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, the primary mission of the heliport was to train helicopter units and develop doctrine and helicopter unit employment policies.

The office of the Chief of Transportation in Washington, D.C., then began to establish a project to design the first heliport for the U.S. military in 1950.The revolutionary design for the heliport was adopted in 1952.

The giant, hard-surfaced “wheel” was selected for its flexibility, with its two runways which bisected a circular taxiway and eight landing pads on the outer rim. In the event that the wheel design proved to not be operationally feasible, the planners saw that it could easily be converted to a circular or square landing area.

Along with the wheel design, facilities were constructed for a fully operational transportation helicopter company, consisting of Piasecki H-21 type cargo helicopters.

Each facility was designed with 40,000 square-feet of steel and concrete to make a hangar, housing five helicopter maintenance shops, a 9,000 squarefoot warehouse for supply storage, a two-story administration-operations building and a 42-foot high glass-enclosed operations tower.

After the 600-foot long diagonal runways were built, they permitted helicopter’s for take-offs and landings when operating with maximum gross weight and under all temperature conditions.

The heliport was dedicated in memory of U.S. Army Warrant Officer Alfred C. Felker during a ceremony on Dec. 7, 1954. Felker was enrolled in one of the first U.S. Army helicopter pilot courses

Since 1955, the Felker Airfield Air Traffic Control Tower at Felker Army Airfield at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va. has changed drastically. Originally, the ATC tower had visibility of the entire airfield including the wheel design which could only hold up to eight aircraft at a single time. Now the updated airfield can house nearly 30 aircraft.

at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and died February 1953 in a helicopter accident near Winterville, Georgia, while conducting an extended cross-country flight.

Throughout the years, the airfield that now sits at JBLE, has been upgraded due to technology advances and changing requirements.

“Over the years, meeting the requirements as safety and operational requirements changed over time, we continue to work at keeping up with and complying with regulatory changes on the airfield,” said John Musser, Felker Army Airfield airfield manager chief of aviation division. “During my time here, we have added necessary things like a two-hour fire rated stairwell, so in the event of a fire the control tower could stay safe while coming down.”

During the 1980’s, the Army began taking out the revolutionary wheel design and decided to place two concrete slabs capable of holding up to 30 aircraft at one time.

In addition to upgrading from the wheel design, the airfield now has a paved runway and shoulders, a new

tall modern air traffic control tower and a fire department located at the airfield.

Since its creation, Felker Airfield has been used as a training area for pilots and maintenance personnel. However, over time, the Army moved schoolhouses to different installations, resulting in fewer units calling the airfield home.

Today, Felker Army Airfield provides a unique wide spectrum helicopter and aircraft facilities in support of U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and Army aviation for training missions and requirements. “[Felker Airfield] supports a unique mission, especially with the Research Test Development Evaluation mission,” said Musser. “It is also a key training site for the Navy. The Navy makes up 75 percent of all movements on the airfield making us one of the top five busiest airfields in the Army.”

According to Musser, the airfield is not going away anytime soon.

Former Langley AFB Commander Col. Robert Ator dies at 78

U.S Air Force (Ret.) Col Robert Avon Ator of Valdosta, Ga., died at age 78 on March 9, 2017, in Gainesville, Fla. Ator was born July 31, 1938, in Washington District of Columbia to the late Henry A. and Claudine C. Ator.

While growing up in Washington, D.C., Ator worked hard from the age of 8 delivering the Washington Post newspaper.

He attended Woodrow Wilson High School where he was active in student government and the Boy Scouts of America, where he attained the highest rank for a child, the Eagle Scout. He remained involved in Boy Scouts his entire life and ultimately received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest Boy Scout award for an adult.

He also loved his cars and was a member of the Synchronizers Auto Club.

Ator graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a degree in Economics. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Air Force, and faithfully served his country for 26 years. He is a graduate of all levels of Professional Military Education that include Squadron Officers School, Navy Command and Staff College and NATO Defense College in Rome, Italy.

During his Air Force career, he served at bases in the U.S., Vietnam, England, Italy and Germany. He was a pilot with over 2,500 hours in fighter aircraft, and flew combat missions in Vietnam.

Prior to retirement he advanced to the rank of Colonel and was the base commander at Moody Air Force Base, Ga., and Langley AFB, Va,. During Ator’s time at Langley AFB, the base received

their first ever overall ‘Outstanding’ rating during their Operational Readiness Inspection.

Following his retirement from the Air Force, he chose Valdosta, Ga., as his home. Not only did he love the city, but he also loved the citizens.

During his time in Valdosta, he served as Vice President of Delta Petroleum Services. Later becoming the Executive Director of Valdosta Regional Airport, and served as airport manager until he retired.

Ator was also a key member of various community organizations such as the Park Avenue United Methodist Church Valdosta Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce’s Moody Support Committee. The committee was successful at protecting Moody AFB from the Base Realignment and Closure in 1991.

Ator leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Sylvia C. Ator of Valdosta, daughter and son-in-law, Stacey and David Klinkicht of Goldsboro, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Avon Ator II and Michelle of Little Rock, AR; son

and daughter-in-law, William H. and Susanne Ator of Sumter, S.C.; brother and sister-in-law Wayne and Cassie Ator of Palm Island, Fla.; sister and brother-in-law Jeanne and Jim Costello of Port Townsend, Wash.

He also leaves behind his seven grandchildren: Jessica Klinkicht of Oklahoma City, OK, Ryan Klinkicht of Goldsboro, N.C., Taylor Ator of Sumter, S.C., Bob Ator of Sumter, SC, Robert Avon Ator, III, Colorado Springs, Colo., Katie Ator, Sumter, S.C., and Lauren Ator of Little Rock, Ark.; several nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Bandit.

The Memorial Service for Ator was be held at 10 a.m. on March 14, 2017 at Park Avenue United Methodist Church.

Chapel assistants aid spiritual resiliency

Chaplain services throughout the Department of Defense offer spiritual care, religious services and counseling that allows service members, their families, and military civilians, to practice their constitutional right to the free exercise of religion.

Military chaplains, who are religious ministry professionals, support spiritual resilience through religious observances, pastoral care, and advising leadership on spiritual, ethical, moral, morale and religious accommodation issues. As spiritual leaders, chaplains are relied upon for faith and personal guidance and they often lean on the support of their chapel assistants. “Most people don’t understand that our chaplain assistants do a great deal of the work,� said U.S. Air Force Chaplain (Lt. Col) Brian McCormack, 633rd Air Base Wing chaplain. “They manage facilities, money, contracts, logistics and chapel related events.�

According to McCormack, although ev-

erything that happens religiously is under the instruction of the base commander, the real unsung heroes are the chaplain assistants, who assist with managing funds, coordination, programs and events. “As a chapel assistant we are the eyes and ears of the chaplains and our job is to help connect the Airman to every resource that is made available through the chapel program,� said U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Crystal Wiley-Perry, 633rd Air Base Wing Chapel operations superintendent, who has been a chapel assistant for 17 years. “We are that link that helps service members navigate through military and life challenges.�

In addition to an annual ministry plan, religious education and worship services, the chaplain staff schedule visits, bibles studies and counseling sessions with several squadrons throughout Langley Air Force Base and work closely with the Fort Eustis Regimental Memorial Chapel. “Because we are a joint base, our goal is to serve the entire military community together,� said U.S. Army Corporal Clinton

Pointer, Fort Eustis Regimental Memorial Chapel chapel assistant team leader. “Most of our training requirements for the Army are very similar to the Air Force.

Each month we try and facilitate joint training and team building exercises to better service both of our communities.�

According to Pointer, during the holidays and special events, Ft. Eustis chapel assistants’ work directly with Langley AFB chapel assistants to ensure their religious education and worship services don’t overlap each other. Their efforts help manage various service times and scheduled events. Fort Eustis offers numerous faith based programs that meet the spiritual needs of the joint base community such as, family ministries for all ages, community outreach projects and meditation groups.

There are also accommodations for Muslim and Wiccan faith groups.

SERVICE MEMBERS RECEIVE RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS

The Fort Eustis Diamond Council distributed gift cards as part of their Random Acts of Kindness campaign to show their appreciation for junior enlisted service members at Joint Base Langley-Eustis March 9, 2017.

The council’s first sergeants gave approximately $400 worth in gift cards for the Exchange Food court to E-4 and below service members.

“Every so often we take money from the different fundraisers we’ve done and invest it into some sort of gift card,” said U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Melissa White, Foxtrot Company, 222nd Aviation Regiment, 128th Aviation Brigade first sergeant and Ft. Eustis Diamond Council president. “Those junior enlisted sacrifice a lot, in my opinion, and they’re the ones down on the ground doing everything, so we just wanted to thank them.”

Many of the service members were not expecting the token of appreciation they received from the council.

The council, which was formed in 2015, also included their business cards with the gift card, asking members to give it to their unit’s first sergeant.

“We’re hoping it will inspire more first sergeants to

join the council so we can do even more for those on base,” said White. “And ultimately, we want the junior enlisted to see first sergeants are to be respected, but approachable at the same time.”

USO: PROVIDING RESOURCES FOR SERVICE MEMBERS, FAMILIES

After more than 75 years, the United Service Organizations, Inc., better known as the USO, continues to serve U.S. service members by providing recreational activities and helping them maintain communication with family members while away from home.

Founded in 1941 as a nonprofit organization, the USO’s mission is to help strengthen U.S. military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation.

According to Kevin Hoffer, USO director of center operations at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia has 11 USO centers staffed by volunteers. Training is provided to familiarize the volunteers with each center’s daily operations.

“We partner with other organizations in the area to support our programs and services, but we can’t do it without volunteers,” said Hoffer. “Every day we see tangible results of what we do – we touch a lot of lives.”

For service members separated from their families because of temporary duty or deployments, the USO’s ‘United through Reading Program’ provides books and

equipment, so that troops can visit a center to videotape themselves reading a book for their loved ones. The video and book is then mailed back to the service member’s families at no charge to the service member.

In addition to the reading program, the center at Langley Air Force Base houses a multipurpose activity room which features free snacks, coffee, books, cable television, video games, a pool table, computer access, Wi-Fi and printers. Free tickets are also available during specific times for special events held throughout the year.

At the Fort Eustis center, service members and their families can participate in free family movie and game nights, children’s holiday events, dances, cookouts and arts and crafts workshops. Light refreshments, computer access, Wi-Fi, printers, fax and work areas are also available.

According to Chereese Alexander, Ft. Eustis USO center director, volunteers are needed for four weekday shifts and two weekend shifts at the center. Volunteer orientation is held on Wednesdays and may take up to two hours.

U.S. Army Soldiers should not need to worry about dental issues while serving on the frontline overseas, or while accomplishing their mission at home station.

Thanks to the dentists and technicians at U.S. Army Dental Command’s Tignor Dental Clinic, Soldiers can focus more on the mission and less on dental concerns.

Dentistry, the branch of medicine concerning with teeth and the associated structures of the oral cavity, also includes prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease and the restoration of defective or missing teeth.

Dental studies show the impact it has on the human body, and is widely considered necessary for complete overall health.

In order to maintain their overall health, active duty U.S. Army Soldiers and Advanced Individual Training students assigned to Joint Base Langley-Eustis must attend appointments scheduled for preventive and restorative treatments such as cleanings, annual exams, fillings and root canals at the U.S. Army Dental Command’s Tignor Dental Clinic.

“In the past, performing a root canal would take four, separately scheduled, appointments and several weeks from initial consultation to completion,” said U.S. Army Maj. Bryan Horspool, U.S. Army Dental Command endodontist. “With the newer capabilities we have in our own lab, we can take the molds and scans, cut out the mold and give the person a new crown in just one ap-

pointment.”

The facility also includes a three-room sterilization process for all tools used by the technicians and dentists, meeting all standards set forth by the Center for Disease Control Division of Oral Health.

The Dental Command personnel also deploy worldwide with Army units, providing the same quality dental care to military members in expeditionary environments.

“Deploying with a unit allows us to maintain an understanding of the cases within the brigade that we would treat at our garrison station,” said Horspool.

“If we can provide care in both routine and emergency situations downrange, it saves time and money instead of having to send the Soldiers to other countries with capabilities to provide medical treatment.”

With approximately 5,000 active duty service members and 2,000 Advanced Individual Training students assigned to the installation throughout the year, U.S. Army Dental Command Tignor Dental Clinic personnel see patients daily to ensure members are fit to fight, armed with charming smiles.

The celebration of Women’s History Month, during the month of March, is a reflection of the extraordinary accomplishments of women throughout society who have not only helped shape American history, but also military aviation and aerospace engineering.

Dr. Christine Darden, retired NASA aerospace engineer, who developed the sonic boom research program, is a local mathematician who was recently celebrated for her contributions to the Women’s and African American movements in the book “Hidden Figures” written by

Margot Lee Shetterly. Her work in mathematics and physics is seen to this day as she influenced aviation technology that drives the design of today’s Joint Base Langley-Eustis warfighters.

Darden, a native of Monroe, N.C., enrolled at Hampton University in 1962 where she majored in mathematics education with a minor in physics. During the 1960s racial discrimination and inequality proved to be a difficult time in America, especially in the city of Hampton.

Darden and other students at Hampton University were the first in Virginia to execute a “sit in” protest at public

“I remember participating in a “sit in” protest in downtown Hampton,” said Darden. “It was a very uncomfortable period in my life, but it never caused me to lose focus in pursuit of my education.”

After facing discriminatory adversity as an African American woman in her early years of education, Darden had her first encounter with NASA while attending Hampton University.

“I knew NASA was in the area while attending college,” said Darden. “I remember in 1962 after John Glenn’s historical space mission, NASA held a parade in his honor and my friends and I watched his parade on Queen Street in downtown Hampton.”

Darden left and traveled to northern Virginia and didn’t return until 1970 when she was hired at NASA as a data analyst.

She said, after 5 years in the computer room she had an overwhelming desire to work in the engineering section.

Darden was yet again faced with another challenge, not only did she experience discrimination based on her ethnicity, but she was being passed up for promotions because of her gender.

“A lot of what the engineers were doing, I learned in graduate school,” said Darden. “I was equally as qualified as the men working in the engineering section, but every time I requested a transfer I was denied.”

According to Darden, NASA hired an African-American male around the same time she was hired and he was promoted ahead of her two different times. This frustrated her, and at one point, she contemplated resigning, but her determina-

tion and will-power didn’t allow her to quit.

“I finally went in to speak with higher management and I explain to them that I hadn’t had a promotion since I’d been at NASA and all the men were passing me up and being promoted,” said Darden.

“Then after several meetings with leadership throughout my department I was finally transferred to an engineering section, and I became one of few female aerospace engineers.”

Darden thrived as an aerospace engineer. While working at NASA she continued her education by earning her PHD in Fluid Mechanics.

A few years later Darden was appointed as the technical leader of NASA’s Sonic Boom Group of the Vehicle Integration Branch of the High Speed Research Program and was responsible for the development of NASA’s sonic boom research program.

During her 40-year career at NASA, she led several advisory teams and received directorial appointments for various research programs throughout NASA. She also authored more than 50 publications in the field of high-lift wing design in supersonic flow, flap design, sonic boom prediction and sonic boom minimization.

Today, Darden not only continues to encourage young people and especially young women about the importance of the science, technology engineering and math skills, but she also shares ideas for how to create opportunities. When asked about keys to being a successful female engineer, she said “Do you job and do it well… be proactive; and let people know what you want and aspire to.”

Defining the 5th Generation Fighter Jet

The term “fifth-generation fighter” or simply “fifth-gen” is used throughout the global military aviation community.

For example, in July 2016, when U.S. Air Force Gen. Hawk Carlisle, former commander of Air Combat Command, briefed the House Armed Services Subcommittee on tactical air and land forces, he said “Today’s air superiority mission rests upon a mix of fourth and fifth-generation fighters.” Carlisle’s statement implies the subcommittee members understood what he meant by “fifth-generation”.

There is no readily available official Department of Defense or U.S. Air Force definition of “fifth-generation” or any of the other previous generations that preceded it.

Here’s my attempt, as an aviator whose flying career spanned at least a couple of the generations, at defining the generations.

First generation fighter jets exploited technologies first generated during World War II, specifically the jet engine and swept wing technology. The U.S. F-86 Sabre and the Soviet MiG-15 Fagot represented the apex of this generation as they fought over the skies of Korea.

Second generation fighters incorporated advances in speed, weapons and sensors of their first generation counterparts. They had increased engine thrust with afterburning pushed fighter speeds past Mach 1 to Mach 2+. In addition, on board radar enhanced night time and bad weather interceptions. Finally, while previous generations relied solely on machine guns, as all fighters had since

the first World War, this generation experienced the advent of the first air-toair guided missiles.

The sleek F-104 Starfighter and the universal MiG-21 Fishbed are two classic examples of the second generation of jet fighters.

Third generation fighters integrated more advanced radars capable of tracking targets at longer ranges with semi-active radar-guided missiles that enabled beyond visual range engagements. Many of these aircraft also incorporated radar warning receivers and, chaff and flares to defeat enemy threat systems. For the U.S., several variants of the McDonnel-Douglas F-4 Phantom were the workhorses of Air Force and Navy tactical air fleets.

The F-4 and its Soviet counterpart, the MiG-23 Flogger, continue to serve in air forces around the globe.

Fourth generation fighters continue as the dominant aircraft in most air fleets. These fighters, which include the F-15 Eagle, F-18 Hornet, the MiG-29 Fulcrum and the JAS 39 Gripen feature hi-G maneuverability, digital datalinks to exchange and share information automatically, a “look down, shoot down” phased or planar arrayed radars to target and track multiple targets and thrust-to-weight ratios that approach or exceed unity. Most fourth-generation fighters are multi-role capable with the ability to deliver highly accurate air-tosurface munitions visually, or by laser or GPS guidance.

As fourth-generation aircraft matured, they incorporated several incremental improvements including active electronically scanned array radars and helmet mount-

Fifth-generation fighters truly fuse multiple on-board offensive and defense sensor systems with off-board information to present a smart, networked digital data-presentation to the pilot.

Fifth-gen also combines advanced low observable technologies previously incorporated into limited platforms (SR-71 Blackbird, F-117 Nighthawk, B-2 Spirit) with advanced handling characteristics on par with, or in excess of fourth-gen aircraft. In addition, fifth-gen may include increased engine thrust that enable sustained supersonic flight without the need for inefficient afterburner, i.e. supercruise.

The most complete description of fifthgen from a senior Air Force leader may be the statement of the previous director of the Air Force F-35A Lightning II Integration Office, Lt Gen Jeffrey Harrigian.

In an article he co-authored, Harrigian wrote, “There are many characteristics of fifth-generation aircraft that separate them from older aircraft. These include, primarily, multi-spectral low observable (LO) design features such as radar, infrared sensors, and visual situational awareness tools), along with self-protection and radar jamming capabilities that delay or deny enemy systems the ability to detect, track, and engage the aircraft.

These aircraft also feature integrated avionics, which autonomously fuse and prioritize the aircraft’s multi-spectral sensors and off board data, providing an accurate real-time operations picture for the pilot, and the ability to download data for post-mission analysis.”

Whether it’s a definition like mine, or one like Harrigian’s, it’s time for the Air Force to explicitly define fifth-gen to provide clarity and meaning to this oftused term.

While we dominate the air, space and cyber domains today, our adversaries have invested heavily in technologies to deny us the superiority we have come to rely upon. To counter this, we must integrate our advantages across these domains in new and dramatically ef-

fective ways. To execute multi-domain operations, commanders need an enhanced C2 system … one that refines our thinking about situational awareness, decision-making and direction of forces.

The team leads for this focus area, Brig. Gen. Chance Saltzman and Chief Master Sgt. Brian Stafford, are already moving out to develop plans and milestones to measure progress. My challenge to you is to think about the evolution of multi-domain operations and the necessary C2 needed to deliver air, space and cyber superiority in the 21st century.

Soldiers compete during simulated combat scenarios

U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the 128th Aviation Brigade at Joint Base Langley-Eustis participated in a week-long NCO and Advanced Individual Training Platoon Sergeant of the Year Competition, March 6 through March 9, 2017.

The competition was designed to test different skills that are expected of every Soldier in the U.S. Army, regardless of their rank or profession.

Throughout the competition, Soldiers were tested in various ways.

They completed a 12-mile road march, fitness tests, written exams and performed close-quarter combat in a simulated wartime environment, which kept competitors mentally and physically challenged.

“This competition tests for a leader, an NCO who Soldiers will look to downrange or in garrison, for motivation to push through any obstacle in their way,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Randolph Allen III, Charlie Company, 210th Aviation Regiment, 128th Aviation Brigade instructor and obstacle course NCO in charge. “Soldiers are most likely to follow an NCO who is able to maneuver through obstacles and push their way through, regardless of the situation.”

In both battlefield scenarios and in the classroom, competitors were graded based on their technique, teamwork and professionalism throughout the com-

petition.

“Being in aviation, we don’t get to do a lot of boots on the ground type of training or missions,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Mathew Johnson, Charlie Co., 210th Aviation Reg., 128th Avn. Bde., instructor and NCO of the year competitor. “However, in any downed aircraft scenario, this type of training is absolutely what we need and it’s really good to reinforce these skills occasionally.”

After earning the title of Platoon Sergeant of the Quarter, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Brittany Barfield, Charlie Co., 222nd Aviation Reg., 128th Avn. Bde. platoon sergeant, was also able to participate in the Advanced Individual Training Platoon Sergeant of the Year Competition. Barfield used this competition to gauge the skills she needs to brush up on in order to perform as a top-notch Soldier, in everyday life.

Eight Soldiers from JBLE and installations across the country competed for the title of NCO of the Year for the 128th Avn. Bde. The winners will move on to compete in the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence’s competition at Fort Rucker, Ala. Soldiers who win at Fort Rucker will compete at the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command to gain the title of Soldier of the Year.

633 CES cartographers: mapping mission success

Standing in a field under the warm, afternoon sun, a U.S. Air Force Airman breaks his gaze as he squints one eye before looking into a device which resembles an oversized Polaroid camera.

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Ryan Mundt, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron engineering technician, was beginning to perform an optical site survey, one of the many duties of the 633rd CES mapping section. The camera he looked through is actually a Total Station, a surveying device used by engineer Airmen during the cartography process.

“Our main function in CE is for location purposes; we provide support with our maps that we build ourselves,” said Willalfredo Torres, 633rd CES geographic information officer. “We are also like historians—this base is 100 years old, so we have over 45,000 drawings that we keep and maintain.”

According Torres, the section produces 35 individual maps on a day-today basis that range from utility to airfield and environmental maps or any space that can have a location tied to it.

The team also keeps track of more than 45,000 maps of all on-base facility floor plans and utilities, to include records of all renovations and floor plans of demolished buildings, and items on base, including hunting stands, electrical and telephone lines, abandoned lines, water, sewage and stop signs.

Along with their day-to-day tasks, the mappers assist in saving time and money by taking the guess work out of projects. They work with customers to fulfil requests, such as finding appropriate locations for projects and estimating the resources needed for them.

For example said Torres, if a customer wanted to construct a parking lot, the mapping section would determine if there was enough room, what types of utilities would be under the facility and its proximity to other facilities.

They also work hand-in-hand with base architects by drawing floor plans and performing site surveys for future buildings.

“Inside CE, we sit in the same section as the engineers and architects. If they wanted to lay out a building, first, they need to know where, so we’ll go out and find a site, tell them where exactly that site is and how big it is, then, they can start designing that building,” said Torres. “We have a knowledge based system that helps you make informed decisions—that’s the power of geographic information systems.”

The job doesn’t stop there though, these Airmen also keep track of items not visible to the eye, often working with local area experts to prevent mishaps with U.S. Air Force fighter aircraft that provide freedom each day.

“For the pilots we have imaginary surface areas for approach and departure.

We keep track of those, so if someone wants to erect a facility—they won’t build it in the flight path,” Torres explained. “Langley Air Force Base owns the airspace five nautical miles out, so outside cities contact us if they want to build [something outside of base].”

According to Torres, through partnerships with local environmental agencies the mapping team also provides safety for local habitats and creatures by identifying wetlands and tracking the Bird and Wildlife Aircraft Strike Hazard maps. This helps agencies protect natural resources and study the Osprey’s, a bird that frequents JBLE, flight pattern.

“Right now we also have storm water data and we’re going to track how much rainfall lands on the base, where it goes and how much of it goes out into the bay without being treated,” Torres continued. “That’s on a federal and state level to protect the Chesapeake Bay, so we’re actually modeling our storm water system so that we know how much water actually makes landfall here and is treated before it goes to the bay to try to make it a better and cleaner place.”

According to Torres, the section has an article, which enables them to see what facilities are affected when there is high water on base. This information is also shared with surrounding cities to protect their assets as well.

while stateside, their focus is more distinct when in a deployed environment.

Torres explained, while deployed the Airmen are trained to determine where structures, such as tents, bathrooms and cafeteria should be located however, the airfield becomes their main focus.

“When we’re deployed, I’d say our mission is more expeditionary—the airfield is our number one priority,” said Mundt. “We do stuff like finding out the minimum operating surface for an airfield because aircraft need a certain amount of distance to take off and land.

ished, our job is to go out there and see what airfield we have left and make it a minimum airfield operating strip. Here at Langley you don’t really have to worry about someone bombing the airfield, but if you’re downrange, it can be an actual real world issue, it’s one of our main focuses.”

Whether stateside or deployed, these Airmen play an integral part of JBLE and the community by ensuring each Airmen has the facilities and ability to carry out their piece of the mission and by helping protect and improve the environment through local partnerships.

X-ray technologists put people first

A U.S. Air Force Airman shuffles into the emergency room gripping his thigh, which is radiating with pain, but he is told, “We don’t know what’s wrong and there’s no way we can help you.”

With a furrowed brow, his eyes begin to shift from side to side rapidly. In his shaken state, he questions if there is some way of seeing beneath the surface, maybe a superhero with x-ray vision.

Lucky for him, sending a distress signal wouldn’t be necessary because of the Airmen assigned to the 633rd Surgical Operations Squadron Radiology department at Joint Base Langley-Eustis. They are equipped with the technology needed to provide images that assist doctors in performing diagnosis and giving trusted care to patients in the medical clinic, surgical department and emergency room, 24-hours a day.

“We have a great radiology team here,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Matthew Knoll, 633rd SGCS diagnostic imaging flight chief, “We have a great combination of knowledge, expertise, ingenuity and motivation.

When we get together and have our morning meeting my techs are coming up to me and saying ‘Hey, I think we can do this, maybe we can make this better.’ A lot of it is focused on patient safety or trying to make things better for the customers—they are a really motivated and dedicated group of folks.”

During a patient’s visit to the radiology department, they are brought back to a room, where they are informed of and positioned for their procedure. The decision on the appropriate technique, as far as how much radiation and radiation power to use, is made by the technologist.

The x-ray process takes roughly three seconds; however, back in the day, it was a more lengthy method since the images were not digital and had to be developed, much like a photograph in a dark room.

“When I first joined, we had cassettes and inside of them we had actual film,” explained Knoll, who joined the Air Force in August, 1994. “After exposing the cassettes to x-ray, we would take it to a dark room, feed the film into a machine, then go through two different chemicals and a water wash. The machine would produce an actual hard copy that we would keep in a folder and hang up for the radiologist to look at. All of this time, the patient would wait. Sometimes the radiologist would look at it and not see what he was looking for and we’d have to call the patient back again.”

According to Knoll, this process would add an additional ten minutes to the patient’s visit, per exam. With-

out today’s technology and an average of 2,000 patients per month, the time for each would add up.

In addition to cutting down the quantity of time it takes to service each patient, current technology also reduces the amount of radiation patients are exposed to.

“Now we have intensifying screens, which turn the x-rays into light before it turns it into an image, which allows you to use a lot less radiation than we did 20 years ago,” said Knoll. “Though we’re very careful about how much radiation we give to our patients—it’s such a minor amount now, people don’t think about it.

It’s actually about the same amount as a chest x-ray, if you fly across country and back again. So, we’re down to very small amount, but we’re always trying to make it even less.”

While the digital age improves the speed of the process, it’s the technologists that serve and comfort patients as they are put under the lens in a dark room that echoes the sound of the x-ray machine scanning their body.

“Even with technology, mentorship is still very important,” said Knoll. “You still need to have a good program to link the experienced techs with the new folks, who are coming right out of technical school. The

people who are right out of tech school know [knowledge based] answers right off of the top of their heads, but the people who’ve been doing it for several years, know when they position a patient who’s hurting, they can’t put them in the position the text book tells you to—that’s the human life experience and being more than a button pusher.”

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class John Dennis, 633rd SGCS diagnostic imaging technologist, expressed similar sentiments, as he described what drives him to do his job to the best of his ability every day and to continue developing to provide the care to patients.

“Each person in the Air Force plays a part in the mission, and we ensure patients can get the healthcare they need,” said Dennis. “It breaks your heart when you see patients [who are severely injured] and it’s heartwarming to see them recover and be back with their family— it’s very fulfilling.”

Like many comic book heroes, these Airmen use technology to strengthen their capabilities, to help doctors fight the forces of illness and provide quality health care to members who visit the U.S. Air Force Hospital Langley.

Fort Eustis Spouse’ Club helps community with grants The Spouses’ Club of Fort Eustis (SCFE) is a private, non-profit organization that earns funds through The Whistle Stop Thrift Store, monthly luncheons, an annual gala, and other events. The funds generated from the SCFE are then dispersed throughout the community in the form of “Community Grants” that are used to benefit the soldiers and families of the Fort Eustis community. Past examples of these community grants are meals provided to soldier’s families, personal devices to help Wounded Warriors keep track of medical appointments and help for soldiers passing through airports. Fort Eustis’ Groninger Library encourages reading Fort Eustis’ Groninger Library has implemented an ongoing Reading Program entitled “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” and “1000 Books from 1st -5th grades.” For every 100 books read, children can take their reading log to the library to receive a prize. After reading 1000 books, children will receive a free t-shirt.
