HEART LINK PROGRAM EMPOWERS SPOUSES TO SUCCEED

After a loved one joins the military, their spouse and family members may need assistance in learning how to navigate through the unique aspects of a military lifestyle.

Established in May 2001, and funded by the Air Force Aid Society, the Heart Link Spouse Orientation Program helps to empower spouses and family members by providing community services and resources to enhance mission readiness.

According to Robyn Wilson, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, Airman and Family Readiness Center community readiness consultant, the program which is referred to as Air Force 101 for spouses, provides attendees with an opportunity to learn, network, become familiar with on and off-base resources and to have fun.

“The 633rd Air Base Wing commander explains the role of the spouse and how significant they are to the success of the mission,” said Wilson.

“We depend on spouses to become exceptional wingmen, so in explaining their role, we emphasize that it’s not just the active-duty member who is serving – the spouse is serving too; the entire family is serving.”

During the orientation, participants receive a packet, which includes information about AFRC’s community partner agencies. Attendees also receive Heart Link coins and are encouraged to go home and challenge their spouse with the military knowledge they received at the orientation.

Another discussion topic includes an explanation of the Heart Link logo, which features the U.S. Air Force symbol and an aircraft symbolizing the U.S. Air Force and its operational mission. A heart-shaped contrail, made by the plane, surrounds to signify the link between the spouse and military family.

the Air Force mission, structure, acronyms and traditions. There is a checklist for new military spouses and a spouse resource list,” said Wilson.

“We send them away with loads of information.”

The information packet also contains an Integrated Delivery Service Team agency guide, Where Do I Go for Help, which lists contact information for on and off-base support agencies.

In addition, community agency representatives sit among the attendees while Wilson conducts a role-play scenario of a new spouse who is troubled and needs assistance.

According to Wilson, role play allows the participants to contribute and give advice on what community agencies can help.

As a spouse who is new to the military, Melissa Hoffman has attended a

Heart Link orientation program and believes it is a useful tool.

“I got to meet other new spouses and learn what resources were available to me,” said Hoffman. “I now know that there is help for anything my family or I may need.”

The Heart Link Spouse Orientation Program is conducted quarterly in the AFRC classroom. The program is open to spouses new to the military or to JBLE. Other military spouses are welcome to mentor the newer spouses.

A continental breakfast and lunch is provided and free child care is on a space-available basis.

DENTISTS EDUCATE YOUTH ON HEALTHY SMILES

hosts NCDHM to educate and encourage children to develop good oral habits at an early age, such as proper brushing and flossing techniques and mouthwash and toothpaste use.

This year’s theme is “Choose tap water for a sparkling smile.” According to the ADA, those who drink only bottled or filtered water do not get the same fluoride, used to prevent tooth decay, as those who drink tap water. Tap water typically has natural or added fluoride at a level that is effective for preventing cavities.

“The younger you can get to children and make sure they know about practicing good habits, the better off they are in the long run,” said U.S. Army Capt. Tyler Oatmen, U.S. Army Dental Health Activity dentist.

“There are a lot of kids out there as young as two or three years old with a lot of tooth decay, so hopefully we can make brushing their teeth seem fun so they want to do it often.”

During their visit to the CDCs, dental technicians demonstrated the proper way to brush teeth, and gave children an opportunity to practice on their own Technicians also presented food and beverage flash cards, allowing children to identify which may be better or worse for teeth.

“The two-year-olds typically just play with the model teeth we bring in, but around three years old and older we can start having conversations with them when they apply what they are learning,” said Oatmen. “They really get involved and seem to respond pretty well to the information.”

HAMPTON ROADS NAMED ONE OF THE ‘GREAT AMERICAN DEFENSE COMMUNITIES’

The Association of Defense Communities designated Hampton Roads, Virginia, as one of the eight “Great American Defense Communities,� for providing untiring support to service members and military families.

The ADC recognized Hampton Roads for its support of military-connected children through innovative school programs and community-based support organizations. “Hampton Roads being named a Great American Defense Community for 2017 is a tremendous honor,� said Craig Quigley, Hampton Roads Military and Federal Facilities Alliance executive director. “There is no area of the country that has a longer or more distinguished history of supporting military installations, personnel, their families and

veterans than Hampton Roads. So this award recognizes the incredible efforts of the communities throughout our region to make the area a wonderful place for service members, their families and veterans to work and live.�

The seven other communities honored, as part of the “Class of 2017�, are: The Alamo – San Antonino Region, Texas, The Charleston Region, South Carolina, Christian County, Kentucky, Fort Hood – Central Texas Region, Maricopa County, Arizona, Sierra Vista, Arizona and the Governments of Southeastern Connecticut. “All eight in the 2017 class of honorees truly embody the ideals this initiative was designed to celebrate, making host communities for our nation’s military installations ‘Great Places to Call Home,’� said Mike Cooper, ADC president.

The 2017 class of communities was selected by a panel from the ADC and

experts from dozens of nominated communities, all considering factors such as education, job opportunities, housing, community appreciation and family support during deployments.

The Great American Defense Communities program was designed to highlight the contributions cities, counties and regions that host installations make to improve the quality of life for service members, veterans and their families.

Over the next six months, each community will host a local event recognizing its selection to celebrate the hard work of the individuals and organizations that make their communities a great place for service members and their families to live.

These events will culminate in a special reception and a congressional breakfast during the Defense Communities National Summit in Washington, D.C., from June 19 through June 21, 2017.

‘I’m not disabled’: Prosthetics keep amputee soldiers on active duty

It’s day zero and the heat at Fort Jackson in July is sweltering.

A group of new initial entry recruits stand at attention, forming a sea of green in their newly issued OCP uniforms as they wait with looks of anticipation on their faces for the first glance at their drill sergeant.

As Staff Sgt. Christopher Hudec makes his way over to the newest trainees ready to serve their country, the looks on their faces switch from fear of what’s to come to pure astonishment.

Just two short months ago Hudec had undergone a major surgery. As he strides toward the Soldiers on crutches, the place where his left leg is supposed to be is noticeably missing.

When his doctor suggested removing it, there was no hesitation. The only thing Hudec fears as a Soldier is failing the mission; if his leg was going to slow him down, he didn’t need it.

Hudec meets the gazes of the young Soldiers.

“If you keep staring at it,” he yells. “I’m going to put it on you.”

HEAD-ON COLLISION Years after the accident, Hudec now has eight different prosthetics that he can attach to his left limb. There’s one for everything: swimming, climbing, running, etc.

“There’s all kind of stories about how I lost part of my leg. The drill sergeants will tell the trainees to be careful at a course because that’s how I lost it,” he laughs. “I never lie about what happen. I never pretend I lost it on duty.”

In November of 2012, a car pulled out unexpectedly in front of Hudec’s motorcycle. He was unable to avoid the accident.

“I heard a snap in my leg and I knew something was wrong,” he said. “I kept trying to get up, and I can hear someone say ‘Wait! He’s moving! How is he alive?’”

The same thing happened to Sgt. 1st Class Kenneth Keith.

“I was on my motorcycle and a truck came at me in a head-on collision,” he said. “I have the same exact amputation like Hudec, just on the other side.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that In 2015 about 5,000 people died in motorcycle crashes, which is up 8.3 percent from 2014.

Although neither one of the Soldiers’ legs will ever be the same after the accident, they left the scene with something more important: their lives.

NOT DISABLED Despite their amputations, Hudec and Keith still live active lifestyles. Hudec participated in the Spartan Trifecta and Keith ran in the Army 10-miler.

“It’s a disability, but I’m not disabled,” Keith said. “My goal is to do whatever I can do to stay active duty.”

About two million people in the U.S. are living with limb loss, according to the Amputee Coalition of America.

“Hudec still out-PTs most Soldiers,” said Katie Stauffer, the athletic trainer for 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment.

Watching Hudec sprint past him during a PT test motivated Staff Sgt. Darwin Zapata to push himself even further.

“If he can do it with one leg, then why can’t I do it with two?” Zapata said. “I definitely pushed myself harder seeing him out there. He’s a big motivation.”

Hudec, who still kicks his left leg out when he’s riding his motorcycle, said he’s never let his disability hold him back, and he likes that he’s someone who motivates others to push harder.

“Hudec’s a walking billboard of the warrior ethos,” said Capt. Richard Bradley II, the commander of Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment.

U.S. Army Soldiers from the 331st Transportation Company, 11th Battalion, 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) from Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, conducted sling-load operations on the James River as part of a field training exercise involving land, sea and air capabilities, Feb. 15 through 16, 2017.

The exercise tested the unit’s ability to move vehicles from one land area to another using a CH-47 Chinook helicopter and LCM-8, Mikeboats. The sling-load capability is often used to deliver supplies or equipment to difficult terrain or hostile environments, such as with humanitarian missions or global disasters.

“The 331st Trans. Co. is the only causeway company in the Army and we are the base that is able to perform this type of sling-load exercise,” U.S. Army 1st Lt. Robert Sypole, 331st Trans. Co., 11th Btn., 7th Trans. Bde. (Ex.) floating causeway platoon leader. “We are able to provide support anywhere for any type of realworld scenario.”

such as the 1098th Medium Boat Company which supplied the LCM-8 Mike boats and the 5th Btn., 159th Aviation Regiment which supplied the helicopter. Sypole said the land and sea units regularly work together, however this was the first time that all three units, land, sea and air, have performed an exercise together.

In a combined effort, the 331st Trans. Co. Soldiers worked together to efficiently train for a real-world scenario and showed their skills as the only floating causeway team in the U.S. Army.

“I think this exercise benefits the Army as a whole because the aviation asset is a very quick way to move cargo from one point to an unknown location or a hostile environment,” U.S. Army Spc. Nicholas De Sa, 331st Trans. Co., 11th Btn., 7th Trans. Bde. (Ex.) watercraft operator. “The air component gets here really fast and drops off compared to having to move cargo off a ship. We can move equipment or cargo quickly and efficiently.”

The units have plans to continue joint field training exercises in the future to further ensure joint mission success at JBLE.

U.S. Army Soldiers from the 331st Transportation Company, 11th Battalion, 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) from Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, conducted sling-load operations on the James River as part of a field training exercise involving land, sea and air capabilities, Feb. 15 through 16, 2017.

The exercise tested the unit’s ability to move vehicles from one land area to another using a CH-47 Chinook helicopter and LCM-8, Mikeboats. The sling-load capability is often used to deliver supplies or equipment to difficult terrain or hostile environments, such as with humanitarian missions or global disasters.

“The 331st Trans. Co. is the only causeway company in the Army and we are the base that is able to perform this type of sling-load exercise,” U.S. Army 1st Lt. Robert Sypole, 331st Trans. Co., 11th Btn., 7th Trans. Bde. (Ex.) floating causeway platoon leader. “We are able to provide support anywhere for any type of realworld scenario.”

such as the 1098th Medium Boat Company which supplied the LCM-8 Mike boats and the 5th Btn., 159th Aviation Regiment which supplied the helicopter. Sypole said the land and sea units regularly work together, however this was the first time that all three units, land, sea and air, have performed an exercise together.

In a combined effort, the 331st Trans. Co. Soldiers worked together to efficiently train for a real-world scenario and showed their skills as the only floating causeway team in the U.S. Army.

“I think this exercise benefits the Army as a whole because the aviation asset is a very quick way to move cargo from one point to an unknown location or a hostile environment,” U.S. Army Spc. Nicholas De Sa, 331st Trans. Co., 11th Btn., 7th Trans. Bde. (Ex.) watercraft operator. “The air component gets here really fast and drops off compared to having to move cargo off a ship. We can move equipment or cargo quickly and efficiently.”

The units have plans to continue joint field training exercises in the future to further ensure joint mission success at JBLE.

Langley 1 of 4 AFBs to test bio-based grease

The 733rd Logistics Readiness Squadron vehicle management flight at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, was chosen to participate in a 12-month long experimental testing of a new bio-based grease to lessen JBLE’s impact on the environment.

The 441st Vehicle Support Chain Operations Squadron and the representatives from the Defense Logistics Agency briefed the vehicle management flight about the impact of the bio-based grease on the three vehicles chosen to test the grease, Jan. 31, 2017.

Members of the 441st VSCOS will also partner with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, NASA and the Kennedy Space Center to test the bio-based grease in their vehicles.

“Bio-based grease is a bio-environmentally friendly lithium-based product that takes the place of petroleumbased grease,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Kevin Moss, 441st VSCOS vehicle program management branch program manager. “We do a lot of planning, research and working with different partners such, as the DLA and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense, to select the random vehicles from several different bases to participate in this program.

After the testing is complete, if the bio-based grease proves to be just as capable as the current grease being used, it will be substituted and used Air Force-wide, and possibly Department of Defense-wide. According to Moss, the environmentally-friendly bio-based grease aligns with the Air Force’s initiative to utilize more renewable or green materials and resources.

“The more petroleum-based products we can take out of our vehicle maintenance inventories and change them over to a greener system, the better for the environment it is,” said Moss. “If bio-environmentally friendly grease falls onto the ground, it still takes energy to clean it up, but doesn’t necessarily hurt the environment as much as the petroleum-based lubricant.”

To keep the integrity of the experiment, JBLE was not the only base selected for testing.

JBLE is one of four Air Force bases that will be testing the grease in its vehicles, to include Patrick Air Force Base, Florida, Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona, and Hill AFB, Utah. Each base was selected based on their diverse climates, unique mission capabilities and vehicle usage.

“JBLE places a great deal of pressure on its vehicles, tugging aircraft to and from the flightline, as well as a mixture of warm and cool weather conditions,” said Moss. “Here at Langley, it’s not too cold, not too hot and

we get some salty air “It’s important to test here so we get a good idea how vehicles are affected in this type of environment.”

As with this experiment, products are being introduced throughout the Air Force to move toward using more renewable resources in hopes of positively impacting the environment, funding and the Airmen within the fleet.

“We will be saving money, energy and the environment,” said Moss. “The big thing we are looking for is positive performance of the vehicle life, a progressive sustainability of the grease and that the weather impacts and impact on the environment are better.”

Along with ensuring the positive impact on the environment, this test could potentially show if the maintainers are positively affected by the shift to eco-friendly products. By changing over from a petroleum-based to a non-petroleum-based, the research team expects that the vehicle maintenance life will extend, as well as the time between needed maintenance, decreasing the amount of work the maintainers put into them. If the grease extends the vehicle life, the longer the vehicle will be in service making it more cost effective for the Air Force as it shifts to eco-friendly resources.

“We are trying to make a more streamline fighting force with the ‘do more with less’ philosophy,” said Moss. “If we can prolong the intervals between mainte-

nance, we can put less stress on our people. That’s how we use innovation to get to the next level where we are doing less maintenance, but quality maintenance, with the same amount of people.”

According to George Handy, DLA program manager, the DOD sets the example for civilian agencies by leading the way in green products and sustainability.

“I think it’s very important that the DOD leads the way in these activities because so many of us are doing this in our own civilian lives, off the installation, and are being subjected to the opportunity to buy sustainable products at home,” said Handy. “Bringing awareness of the DOD using sustainable products may encourage commercial sectors such as the railroad and farming industry to implement bio-based products, therefore reducing the impact on the environment.”

As the Air Force increases the use of sustainable products throughout everyday operations, Airmen gain the knowledge and opportunity to raise awareness of the benefits of going green.

“The Air Force is on the leading edge of technology,” said Moss. “Hopefully, we can use this initiative to become a greener fleet and reduce our carbon footprint.

We are the world’s greatest Air Force. We fly, fight, win and push to reduce, reuse and recycle.”

MDG SNCOS TOPS AFMS’ 2016 AWARDS

Not one, but two Airmen assigned to the 633rd Medical Group, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia were the recipients of top honors for their work in support of the Air Force’s mission, for the year 2016.

U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Curtis Miller, 633rd Medical Support Squadron superintendent, was presented the U.S. Air Force Organizational Management Excellence Award, while Senior Master Sgt. Ellwood Tegtmeier, 633rd Inpatient Operations Squadron superintendent, earned the U.S. Air Force Senior NCO Clinical Support Excellence Award.

In addition to their job performance, both Miller and Tegtmeier were judged on their ability to develop their people, self-improvement and their work within the local community and base populace, which was no easy feat.

As the superintendent of the 633rd MDSS, Miller’s job entails overseeing and mentoring nine flights and deploying 633rd MDG members. He is also part of the Global Response Force; whose past work includes Ebola treatment in Africa and humanitarian work in Honduras and the Dominican Republic.

Miller also serves as functional manager for biomedical maintenance technicians for Air Combat Command. Additionally, he oversees the Air Force’s largest medical pilot and contingency department called War Reserve Material.

“My job is very high paced, it averages from 12 to 14-hour days,” said Miller.

“I do a lot of interaction with Fort Detrick, Air Staff and our ACC counterparts

across base. I also have 382 troops here that I am responsible for guiding the development of. We also do all of the field testing and next generation testing for our Expeditionary Medical Support System.”

Tegtmeier’s job tempo shows no sign of slowing down either, being the primary advisor to the commander. He too plays a key role in the development and guidance of the Airmen under his watch. He oversees the busiest birthing unit of the Air Force and also the only Air Force Level Two Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. According to Tegtmeier, the biggest challenge of his job is keeping the Labor and Delivery Section, which boasts 1,200 births per year, running smoothly. Tegtmeier and his team often move items around to keep newborns and their mothers in the Labor and Delivery Section and to keep the Labor and Delivery Section open. In addition to these duties, Tegtmeier also serves as the functional manager for radiologic technologists across ACC. Although these senior NCOs recognize their awards are great achievements, they acknowledge that they could not have done it alone.

“When I found out I was nominated for the award I was excited because my team had brought me there,” said Miller.

“Not because of what I had done, but because the contributions I am providing are meaningful, they have impact and they are coming to fruition—nothing is dying in the water. The pride came from all of that.

“I think the biggest thing I love about my job is leading Airmen,” said Tegtmeier. “I’m passionate about it more so now than ever before, probably because I realized that my time is now very limited and that I only have a certain amount of time to pass on what is so freely given to me by the leaders that came before me. I think the best way we can show respect for those who came before us is to pass it on to those coming up behind us.”

Miller and Tegtmeier’s work ethic does not go unnoticed by their leadership and coworkers. Chief Master Sgt. Richard Burgos, 633rd MDG superintendent, expressed his appreciation for their dedication to the mission.

good,” Burgos explained. “Both of them care about the people and like to keep the commander out of trouble. Having them on the team makes my job easier because I have the confidence in them to lead Airmen, and to me that is key.”

Miller and Tegtmeier are proud of their accomplishments and hope to continue to contribute to the mission of providing trusted care to Team Langley and beyond.

“I don’t really want this to end. I’m looking forward to hopefully putting on that next rank, so that I can continue to serve in the Air Force,” said Tegtmeier.

“I love working in the medical field because we get to help people. So, just as much as I am passionate about to leading Airmen, I get to go home and hang my hat on the fact that I was also successful in helping others with their specific health care needs.”

AFRC, ACS OFFER CLASSES FOR MILITARY SAVES WEEK

The Airman and Family Readiness Center and Army Community Services at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, will participate in Military Saves Week Feb. 27 through Mar. 3, 2017 to encourage U.S. service members and families to build financial savings.

As part of America Saves Week, MSW is a Department of Defense campaign which seeks to motivate and educate service members on the importance of having long-term and short-term saving goals to gain financial stability.

“What we’re finding is a lot of people don’t have that emergency savings set aside,” said Darlene Morgan, Army Community Service financial counselor. “This is one week that we really want to emphasize the need to save, and encourage and show them ways to save.”

With a theme of “Set a goal, make a plan and save automatically,” service members, retirees and dependents can learn from financial advisors ways to spend less money in their everyday lives, as well as ways to set

money aside for an emergency fund, vacation fund or any large purchase.

As military families plan their budgets for groceries and other household essentials, they can use coupons as a tool to help save money when shopping for the best deals.

For Military Saves Week, held Feb. 27 through March 4, the Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, Airman and Family Readiness Center offers a couponing workshop to provide families with couponing strategies and savvy shopping tips.

According to Nina Lee, AFRC community readiness specialist, the couponing workshop is part of AFRC’s mission of providing targeted Airmen and family support and services, contributing to the mission readiness, resilience and

well-being of the Air Force community.

“Couponing classes are always in great demand,” said Lee. “Our goal in hosting this event is to provide resources for families to save money and connect with the community.”

During the event, a local couponing expert will teach participants about the benefits of couponing and how to effectively use coupons to get the best return on their investment of time and money.

In addition to the coupon clipping process, participants will also learn how to use digital couponing resources including apps, smartphones and other technology.

For military spouses who are interested in starting a home-based business, local business representatives will be available to discuss entrepreneurship, networking and

the small business vendor process.

“We have military spouses who work from home and they need ways to generate other income for their household,” said Lee. “We want them to be able to connect with local businesses and the community and take advantage of opportunities that are out there.”

According to www.USA.gov, saving money involves looking for deals and buying essential products and services at the best price, using coupons or by comparison shopping. Consumers should also create a spending budget to help them reach short and long-term financial goals.

In addition to the Military Saves Week campaign, couponing workshops are held several times a year, rotating between Langley’s AFRC and Army Community Service at Fort Eustis. The workshops are open to all JBLE community members.

Tax center now open The Langley Tax Center is now open! Assistance is available at the walk-in kiosks for self-file or call for an appointment at 225-5777 for additional income tax assistance during the hours of 8 a.m.-12 p.m., MondayFriday.

The tax center is located at 402 Helms Ave., Langley Air Force Base, Va., Bldg. 801 on the basement level.

Parking is located in the back of the building. If entering the building from the front or back entrance, use the stairwell in the lobby to access the tax center on the basement level. The elevator does not work, so call in advance for assistance down the stairs.

Again, an appointment is not required to use the kiosks—the kiosks are available between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. during the duty day. When using the kiosk, access Military OneSource, an online resource that offers free software to help prepare and file taxes online.

A consultant is available to answer any question regarding Military OneSource for free during the tax season, Jan. through April 18, 2017, at 800-342-9647 while at the tax center or home. When using the kiosks, access to other free tax preparation sites will be available to help individuals prepare their taxes on their own. JBLE Family Child Care Program The Joint Base Langley-Eustis Family Child Care Program is looking for child care providers. They are searching for those interested in a professional, portable career that will allow those to stay at home and run a homebased business.

Fort Eustis Spouse’ Club helps community with grants The Spouses’ Club of Fort Eustis (SCFE) is a private, non-profit organization that earns funds through The Whistle Stop Thrift Store, monthly luncheons, an annual gala, and other events. The funds generated from the SCFE are then dispersed throughout the community in the form of “Community Grants” that are used to benefit the soldiers and families of the Fort Eustis community.
