In a year’s time, one in 10 American teens will be physically abused by their boyfriend or girlfriend, according to a recent national survey. The 2010 U.S. Census reported the population of youth ages 10-19 was 40,717,537 and statistics suggest more than 4 million American teens experience dating abuse annually.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, statistics from that survey also state nearly half of all teens have friends who have been in a verbally-abusive relationship.

February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, and Joint Base Langley-Eustis Service members are encouraged to understand what teen dating violence is, how to prevent it and what resources are available to help those affected.

“Dating violence comes in many forms,” said Barbara Bothwell, Langley Air Force Base Family Advocacy outreach manager.

“It can be constant name calling and putdowns, pressure to use alcohol or drugs or demands to be constantly available. Pressure to have sexual contact and even rape are not unusual.”

Bothwell said parents should also be aware of digital abuse, which involves constant texting and instant messaging, or use of social media to intimidate a victim by stalking through cell phones.

“Parents should be looking for changes in mood or personality, the onset of depression and sadness or constant worrying about what the partner will think,” she said.

“Physical indicators may be changing the way they dress, wear their hair or how they talk in order to make the partner happy.”

Indicators of a teen involved in an abusive relationship can vary, said A.J. Brandt, Fort Eustis Family Advocacy outreach manager. Some signs include isolating the teen from family and friends, unexplained physical injuries, emotional outbursts and failing grades.

“Parents should notice if their teen starts checking their phone constantly, displaying extreme jealousy or beginning to withdraw,” said Brandt. “It’s an extremely prev-

alent issue. When I started discussing this topic with teens, almost all of them would know someone who was being abused. To me, that was shocking.”

Brandt and Bothwell both suggest parents play a critical role in deterring teen dating violence, and can start by having open discussions with their children and being aware of their friendships.

“Parent involvement is crucial - talk with your teen and let him or her know you are aware of how prevalent and serious dating violence is,” said Bothwell. “Make sure your teen knows you can be called for a ride home, without [ramifications], if she or he is in an uncomfortable position – even if alcohol or drugs are involved. Know where your teen is going and with whom, and know the cell phone numbers of friends.”

Bothwell said it’s never too early for par-

ents to become involved in educating their children about abuse, and they should also make efforts to set an example.

“Characteristics of healthy versus unhealthy relationships can be incorporated into conversations from a very early age,” said Bothwell. “This makes a child much less likely to be involved in an unhealthy relationship. It is also important for parents to provide a home where everyone is treated with consideration and respect without verbal abuse or violence.”

Brandt echoed Bothwell’s sentiment, stressing the significance of a child’s environment.

“Parents are the number-one support system for their child and as an adult, they can advocate for their child,” said Brandt. “They certainly should lead by example. When they talk [to their teen] about domestic vio-

lence, it’s important they also demonstrate a healthy relationship. Children who grow up witnessing domestic violence are more likely to either become a victim or victimize others in their relationships.”

Bothwell and Brandt advise parents seeking education about teen dating violence to take the Active Parenting of Teens class offered through the JBLE Family Advocacy Prevention Program. The class, offered at Fort Eustis from 9 to noon every Friday from Feb. 21 - March 14, focuses on effective communication with teens and addresses concerns of drugs, sexuality and violence.

“Most of all, listen. Resist the urge to offer advice or put down the boyfriend or girlfriend, which can make the teen defend him or her,” said Bothwell. “If your teen is telling you something is wrong, make the time to carefully listen.”

Knowing regulations on weapon handling at Joint Base LangleyEustis can make the difference between being on your way or being detained by military law enforcement for improper weapon use.

John Challis, 733rd Security Forces Squadron deputy director, believes Service members should make themselves aware of ownership rules, transportation laws and other regulations involving weapon use at JBLE. Airmen living in the dormitories at Langley Air Force Base are not allowed to keep their weapons with them. However, they may store their weapons at the 633rd Security Forces Squadron armory, while Soldiers at Fort Eustis living in the barracks can store their weapons within their unit’s armory.

Once an Airman or Soldier purchases a weapon, they are required to ďŹ ll out the Air Force Form 1314, which lists what weapon, they have and the amount of ammunition they would like to store or keep in their home.

Soldiers and Airmen new to JBLE may store weapons at the 733rd SFS or 633rd SFS armories to allow time to ďŹ ll out proper forms.

Once registered through their respective armory, weapon owners at Langley and Fort Eustis may store their weapons at base and post housing. “Many of our [Service members] don’t know they can store their weapons at [JBLE],� said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Mark Walker, 633rd SFS, armorer. “Whether living on-or off-base, personnel have the opportunity to keep their weapons close by.�

At Fort Eustis, Soldiers must approach their unit’s armory for guidance as different units have various rules concerning access, while

Airmen at Langley must register through their ďŹ rst sergeant, commander and the armory ofďŹ ce.

Langley Airmen may check out their weapons from the armory for up to 72 hours. If they wish to extend the time, they must receive approval from their ďŹ rst sergeant and commander.

When carriers bring a weapon onto an installation, they must inform the ofďŹ cer at the entrance there is a weapon in the vehicle, and they cannot bring the weapon into any government building.

Additionally, when carrying a weapon in a vehicle, handlers must store the weapon and ammunition in different areas, said Challis.

Although Service members have a right to own a weapon, they must follow the regulations of JBLE. For information, contact the 633rd SFS armory at 764-5295. Soldiers should contact their unit’s armory.

Preparing to separate: VA entitlements for veterans

As U.S. Service members separate from the military, they become eligible for benefits provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The VA was formed to fill President Abraham Lincoln’s promise “to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan,” by providing a wide variety of services for veterans.

“It’s extremely important for separating Service members and veterans to know the benefits they qualify for,” according to the VA. “They worked hard to defend their country and earned the benefits to ease them into civilian life.”

Available VA benefits include disability compensation, health care, education, home loans and life insurance.

Veterans separating from the military with at least 10 percent disability due to disease or injury qualify for tax-free monetary benefits.

Compensation may also be paid for postservice inabilities found related or secondary to disabilities occurred in service and for situations presumed to be related to circumstances of military service, even though they may arise after service.

Special Monthly Compensation is an additional tax-free benefit paid to veterans, spouses or parents of Service members. For veterans, SMC has a higher rate of coverage paid due to special circumstances, such as the need for an aide or a specific disability, like the loss of use in a hand or leg.

Other special disability programs Service members may be eligible for include individual un-employability, automobile allowance, clothing allowance, pre-stabilization, hospitalization, convalescence, dental and birth defects.

The VA has the largest integrated health care system in America with over 1,700 sites that serve 8.76 million veterans each year, according to the VA website.

Qualified veterans are able to receive dental care to maintain, restore and improve oral health and masticatory function.

The length of time dental care is provided

depends on dental needs and classification when enrolled in the program.

A VA health care benefit is also offered which may require copays for medical care of non-service connected conditions, while some veterans may be eligible for cost-free health care services. However, VA health care is not considered a health insurance plan.

Veterans applying for VA medical care are required to provide information on their private health insurance coverage, as well as their spouse’s health insurance.

Education The VA offers several options for veterans to pursue educational advancement outside the Montgomery and Post-9/11 G.I. Bills.

Entrepreneurship training is available for those wanting to start their own businesses, earn a license or certify for career fields such as mechanics or medical technicians.

The benefit also includes non-college degree programs such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning repair, truck driving, emergency medical training and barber or beautician schooling.

Additionally, some on-the-job training and apprenticeships allow veterans to enter into a contract with a company to learn a skill while receiving a salary.

Home Loans The VA helps Service members, veterans and eligible surviving spouses become homeowners by providing a variety of housing-related programs to buy, build or repair a home.

While getting a loan, buyers can get competitive interest rates and are often not required to provide a down-payment or private mortgage insurance.

VA loans are only available for property used for personal occupancy. To be eligible, applicants must have a good credit score, sufficient income, a valid certificate of eligibility and meet certain requirements.

Named “the mother of the modern day civil rights movement,” Rosa Parks was an African-American woman born in Tuskegee, Ala. in 1913, and is known for her stand against racial segregation in Montgomery, Ala. Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat for a white man and was subsequently convicted of civil disobedience. Parks spent most of her life fighting for desegregation, voting rights and the Civil Rights movement that shaped the United States. Fort Eustis will host a Civil Rights Observance on Feb. 21 at the Jacobs Theater from 10 to 11 a.m. to celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans like Park.

To convert without meeting the VA’s good health requirements, Service members must complete their application within 240 days of separation. If separated within one year and 120 days Service members can convert, but need to meet the VA’s health requirements.

The VA recommends Service members sign in to use their eBenefits account and use the ‘Explore VA’ function to help them determine their benefits.

U.S. Service members are expected to maintain a high level of physical fitness to succeed in physically demanding missions. However, there are those willing to go above and beyond to achieve superior fitness standards.

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Damar Turner, 633rd Force Support Squadron Airman Leadership School instructor, committed himself to not only being a full-time Airman, but to follow his dream of competitive bodybuilding.

Turner juggles a busy lifestyle to fulfill both of his personal goals; being a model Airman and obtaining a fit physique.

Turner’s morning typically consists of waking up at 4 a.m. to study for promotion.

Then, he visits the gym to complete his cardio workout for the day. Next, he heads to ALS where he teaches.

Throughout the day, Turner fuels his body with nutritious food to maintain his body building physique. After work, Turner performs a weightlifting workout, and ends his night with additional studying.

Turner’s healthy lifestyle consists of maintaining healthy eating habits combined with a strict workout regimen. He says his diet requires the most discipline and willpower each day, traits he be-

lieves he learned from his parents.

“My parents got me involved with sports to stay out of trouble,” said Turner. “I grew up in Queens, [N.Y.], and no matter how rough it was, my siblings and I always found a way to play sports and stay healthy.”

Turner’s parents continuously motivated him to do well in school and taught him the importance of self-discipline.

After a childhood filled with football games and track meets, Turner left home for college, ultimately deciding to enlist instead. Turner entered the Air Force as a heating, air conditioning and ventilation specialist.

At his first duty station, he was involved with intramural sports and became a physical training leader, which helped him to follow his dream of body building.

Turner, now in charge of the physical fitness program for ALS, enjoys being a PTL, using the opportunity to mentor Airmen. Turner caters the program to the student’s needs while abiding Air Force program requirements.

“I love helping people,” said Turner.

“I received such positive feedback from so many students. Their motivation and seeing that same drive, motivates me.”

Turner at the gym frequently, but got to know him better as an ALS student.

“Our flight as a whole really started following his advice by eating better and living a healthier lifestyle,” said Bertsch.

Bertsch, who also enjoys maintaining his physique, remembers how often Turner aided students.

“He was always willing to help students no matter what,” said Bertsch. “He is a genuine and caring person with a good heart. He leads by example and that was something that I really enjoyed.”

Turner’s love for sports and mentoring led him to complete his certification in personal training and coach youth football teams.

Prevent off-duty safety mishaps

U.S. Service members are taught to warm up before exercising and to utilize situational awareness from the day they enter the military. Unfortunately, many do not heed this recommendation, resulting in accidents, injuries and safety incidents.

However, according to the 633rd Air Base Wing safety ofďŹ ce, which is responsible for tracking safety incidents for all Service members on Joint Base LangleyEustis, the incidents most commonly reported to their ofďŹ ce revolve around these basic principles. “Most of the incidents reported have to do with sports and recreation and people working out,â€? said Staff Sgt. Phillip Jones, 633rd ABW safety technician. “Most of these reports deal with people not stretching properly or trying to do more than their body can handle.â€?

In addition to sports and recreation, the ofďŹ ce is getting more reports of accidents involving Service member’s privately operated vehicles as well as slips and falls due to local weather conditions, said Jones. “If you are going to be driving, prepare for the weather by putting chains on your tires and if needed, allow extra travel time and pay close attention to your surroundings,â€? said Jones. “As you are walking from your car to a building, look for ice on the ground to avoid slipping on it.â€?

Should a Service member get injured on or off-duty, they are required to report the incident to their immediate supervisor or unit safety representative, who then has ďŹ ve duty days to complete and turn in Air Combat Command Form 164 to their unit leadership and safety ofďŹ ce.

If individuals wish to report a potential safety hazard in their work place they should use their chain of command or ďŹ ll out an Air Force form 457 when necessary, and submit it to the safety ofďŹ ce.

382nd Transportation Theater Opening Element holds inactivation ceremony

The 382nd Transportation Theater Opening Element, Special Troops Battalion, 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary), held an inactivation ceremony at Fort Eustis, Feb. 6, as a result of changes to the Fort Eustis transportation mission.

“The Army needs a leaner transportation brigade with expeditionary capability,” said U.S. Army Maj. Christopher Garvin, Special Troops Btn. executive officer. “In becoming leaner, the 7th TBX is inactivating and re-stationing multiple units and headquarters.”

The 382nd TTOE was designed to provide additional transportation expertise to the 7th TBX, enabling the organization to perform theater opening and distribution operations.

The 382nd TTOE was first formed Nov. 3, 1944 as the 3382nd Quartermaster Service Detachment, and officially activated Dec. 12, 1944 in the Philippines.

After several inactivations and re-designations, the unit was activated Oct. 16, 2006 at Fort Eustis as the 382nd Transportation Detachment, later re-organized as the 382nd TTOE. The 382nd TTOE is the first unit in the brigade to be inactivated, according to Garvin.

“It has been a learning experience for our team as we managed the draw-down of personnel and equipment to ensure our soldiers are taken care of,” said Garvin.

“The 382nd has consistently performed well and I am confident the soldiers of the 382nd will continue to excel in their service to the nation in their new capacity supporting other units [at Fort Eustis] and around the Army.”

Capt. Matthew Castiglione, 382nd TTOE commander, thanked the 382nd TTOE Soldiers during his address to the unit.

“I am proud of all your hard work and dedication, enduring vigilance and professionalism,” said Castiglione. “I truly believe the 382nd TTOE’s unique capa-

According to U.S.Air Force Tech. Sgt. Samantha Paris-Harvey, 633rd ABW military justice noncommissioned officer in charge, Service members caught using synthetic marijuana or any other illicit drugs are subject to punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice and can receive anything from an Article 15 to a court martial or jail time.

Aside from legal consequences, synthetic marijuana also raises many health concerns, because manufacturers frequently modify the chemical composition to avoid punishment under federal laws.

“A big concern [with synthetic marijuana] is you are not always sure what is in it,” said Dr. [Maj.] Gregory Trolley, 633rd Medical Operations Squadron neurologist.

“It’s not a regulated industry, so it can contain unknown chemicals and severely harm consumers.”

Trolley explained synthetic marijuana is a designer drug that mimics the effects of marijuana, but can cause negative side effects including seizures, tremors, difficulty sleeping, headaches, sweating, hallucinations, psychotic episodes and suicidal thoughts.

Airmen at Langley Air Force Base who feel they have a drug addiction can self-identify on their own terms to the Alcohol and Drug Addiction Prevention and Treatment center or the DDRP office to receive counseling and treatment. Soldiers on Fort Eustis can self-identify to the Army Substance Abuse Program office. However, those already selected for random drug testing cannot self-identify.

“The U.S. military’s new ability to test for synthetic marijuana is going to greatly affect Service members’ health around JBLE,” said Heyward. “Our goal is to maintain a strong and effective community with an excellent quality of life. Illicit drugs don’t belong in such a place.”

Having only been in the U.S. Army for a year and a half, Spc. Roxanne Cavezuela, 3rd Military Police Detachment military working dog handler, has already experienced the concept of having a true “Battle Buddy” – and in this case, hers is four-legged.

That 4-year-old buddy’s name is MWD Chek, a patrol explosives detector dog also assigned to the 3rd MP Det. Their relationship is something Cavezuela, a Morton, Texas native, is very grateful for, because building a rapport with a MWD doesn’t always come easy, she said.

“When I first got Chek, he was still ‘attached’ to his previous handler,” she said. “The day we became certified as a team, they said we had performed more cohesively that day than any other time before. I knew he was the dog for me.”

Because of Chek’s deployment experience in Afghanistan, Cavezuela said he already taught her critical lessons of what it means to be a handler. Whether responding to a call, participating in group training or conducting obedience lessons one-on-one, Cavezuela said all moments spent together have solidified a special bond and made them an effective team.

“Coming to work and seeing him every day doesn’t even feel like work, because when I get to play with him, I get so much joy out of seeing him happy,” she said. “Everything I do, I do with Chek. I love him, and can’t imagine having another dog as my partner.”

Vonda Peagler, 633rd Logistics Readiness Squadron transportation assistant, picks up her phone the second the clock hits 11 a.m. She retreats to her office break room, flicks open the small stand to keep her phone upright, puts in her headphones and waits.

“He might be having connection problems,” said Vonda, twiddling her thumbs. “Over there, you never know what can happen. It is always mission first, so I don’t mind waiting.”

After more than 25 years as a U.S. Army spouse, Vonda knows the ins-and-outs of a deployment: all the waiting, dropped calls and “maybe next time” speeches. Regardless, she looks anxious.

After a short while, a tiny, pixilated image appears on the screen, and the seemingly countless days of separation in her 31-year relationship

Vonda married Capt. Kenneth Peagler, 271st Movement Control Team m commander stationed out of Fort Eustis, almostt 27 years ago. They both grew up in Georgiana, Ala., A and started dating the moment they entered hiigh school. They married after graduating, and a co ouple years later, Kenneth enlisted in the Army. Sincce then, Vonda has learned what it really means to lo ove, no matter what challenges her marriage and ffamily life faces.

“Because I appreciatee and understand what Kenneth does for our family and country, I have strength when it is time for him to go,” said Vonda. “I took the time to learn more about his job, and that leads to better communication c when he has the chance to talk.”

Through those long talks t and the support of the Army family, Vondaa believes all spouses are stronger than they think k.

Anita Dwyer, wife of U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. William Dwyer, 1st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron inspector general self-assessment program manager, gave birth to their first child on Feb. 7.

The Dwyers have been married for ten years, and were delighted when they found out they were going to be parents of a baby girl.

“After nine years of marriage, it seemed like it was going to be just be the two of us,” said Anita. “Constantina changed us from a couple to a family.”

Quianna Samuels, 633rd Medical Group Labor and Delivery clinic registered nurse, was recognized in a Portraits in Courage ceremony held by Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James A. Cody at the Women’s Memorial in Arlington, Va., Feb. 5 for her acts of valor during a chemical plant explosion.

The Portraits in Courage series highlights the extraordinary acts of Airmen who put their lives on the line to save others during dangerous situations.

“Our Airmen are faced with situations like this each and every day around the globe,” wrote Air Force Chief of Staff Mark A. Welsh III and Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James A. Cody in the eighth volume’s preface. “Each of them has their own story...They believe in integrity, in service, in excellence and are ready and willing to go in harm’s way.”

Selected as one of 22 Airmen for the eighth volume of Portraits in Courage, Samuels joins an elite group of 175 Airmen who have been recognized for their acts of valor and sacrifice in the face of danger.

At the ceremony, the awardees attended a luncheon during which the Air Force Chief of Staff Civic Leader Program recognized the individuals and gave them an opportunity to recount their actions during those dangerous situations.

The following is Lt. Samuels’ story: Then an Air Force ROTC cadet, Samuels was heading home after Leadership Laboratory, an ROTC class. She had stopped for dinner with fellow cadets, Alison Norlander and Ashlyn McNeely when an explosion shook the ground. Flames and dark plumes of smoke shot into the sky, enveloping an area only a mile or two from the cadets’ location.

Unknown to the women, the explosion had originated at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas, causing 15 deaths, hundreds of injuries and a wide-scale evacuation of the town.

Instead of evacuating the area, the three nursing students ran toward the explosion.

Although Samuels felt turmoil as she ran, the training she received in the ROTC detachment at Baylor University kicked in, helping her adapt quickly to the situation.

“I had reservations running towards that black cloud,” SamueIs said. “I had just received my RN license, and the other two cadets were still nursing students. But when I

saw my wingmen running, I knew we were going to deal with whatever the situation was.”

As they approached the area, utter chaos greeted them. Fires and a dense black smoke consumed the surrounding neighborhood.

“You could feel the heat from the fires on your skin, but you couldn’t see two feet in front of you,” Samuels said.

The cadets assessed the situation and began providing first responder care.

“Nothing can prepare you for the real thing,” she said. “But during our training, we covered a similar situation where we had to deal with mass casualties.”

People poured out of damaged houses, bleeding from the shattered glass of imploded windows.

“I presented a calm outward appearance.

I kept my feelings inside and focused on reacting with a purpose,” she said. “I just kept checking the rest of the neighborhood, seeing if anyone needed help.”

Samuels made her way to a nursing home damaged by the blast. She began working with other first responders to evacuate and care for the residents.

“The nursing home was hit badly by the explosion,” Samuels said. “There was one man who had a bad abdominal wound. He threw up while we were trying to move him.

We knew the best thing would be to get him to the main site.”

The main treatment site was a football field roughly a mile from the nursing home.

As first responders worked to put patients in trucks heading to the field, another complication arose, urging the responders to move faster.

“A woman told me she smelled gas,” she said. “I knew we had to get out of the area quickly before there was another explosion.”

Fortunately, Samuels and other first responders were able to move all the patients to the football field. When she arrived to the treatment site, the scale of the situation sank in.

ment,” she said. “People had injuries ranging from superficial cuts to broken bones.

The responders had the less-injured people lined up in rows on one side of the field, and mats set up for people they were still trying to stabilize on the other.”

For more than four hours, the future Air Force officers moved, stabilized and treated patients until they realized there was nothing more they could do.

“The rescue personnel had the situation in hand,” Samuels said. “We headed back to the car and drove to the nearest hospital.”

The cadets were treated for smoke and chemical inhalation, and McNeely was treated for a broken ankle.

After the event, Samuels analyzed her and her fellow cadets’ actions under pressure.

“It was hard seeing so many injured people,” she said. “But seeing the other cadets

Samuels’ and her fellow cadets’ actions received accolades from her detachment and most recently, the Air Force Chief of Staff and Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force. Despite the recognition, Samuels remains humble.

“I did what I could,” she said. “I think that’s a mindset a lot of people in the military and medical field have. We’re not heroes. We just do what we can to help.”

Now a lieutenant, Samuels currently works at the Labor and Delivery department at Langley Air Force Base and finds the job very rewarding.

“When you deliver a child and see a family meet the child they’ve been waiting for, it’s very precious,” Samuels said. “The minute you hand the mother her child and you see them connect ... that’s why I chose this department.”

The explosion and repercussions have stayed with Samuels, but the event has also driven her to do her best to continue to support the Air Force mission.

“I always wanted to be in the medical field,” she said. “I wholeheartedly believe what I do impacts the mission all the time.”

McDonald Army Health Center, in conjunction with the American Red Cross, hosted a blood drive at Fort Eustis, Feb. 12.

The event was open to all members of Joint Base Langley-Eustis and local communities.

“Donating blood is a great opportunity for our community to give back,” said U.S. Army Capt. Vidhika Persaud, MCAHC lab manager. “Since most of the blood is used within the local area, these donations might help our neighbors [on and off the installation].”

Shannon Revels, ARC senior account manager, said each donor has the potential to save lives.

“We divide the blood we receive into whole blood, platelets and plasma,” explained Revels. “Since one person needs some form of blood every two seconds in the U.S., one donation can possibly save three lives.”

Revels also said the quarterly blood drives aim to acquire 55 productive pints of blood, which usually comes from about 70 people, since a few volunteers may be turned down due to medical reasons.

Persaud said possible donors have nothing to fear when donating blood if they follow a few simple steps.

“As long as donors drink plenty of water before their donation, eat a good breakfast and lunch, and sleep well the night before, they should be fine,” said Persaud. “All the technicians who draw blood are specially trained, so all of our volunteers are in safe and capable hands.”

SSgt promotion test rescheduled; to begin on April 1

To ensure senior airmen selected for promotion to staff sergeant do not meet the enlisted retention board, the Air Force will move the testing window up from May 1-June 15 to April 1-May 16, Air Force Personnel Center officials said recently.

“We have assured Airmen selected for promotion that they will not meet the ERB,” said Chief Master Sgt. Michael McGuirt, of AFPC enlisted promotions. “Moving the testing window up will allow individuals to test and allow us time to process scores, run selects before the ERB board begins and remove selects from the ERB eligible list.”

Changing the testing window for the promotion cycle could prevent as many as 10,000 records from being unnecessarily reviewed by the ERB, McGuirt said.

“We’ve coordinated with all the affected organizations to ensure study references are available and test booklets will be printed and delivered to testing locations in time for the April 1 start date,” he said.

The enlisted retention program is one of several fiscal 2014 expanded force management programs that have been or will be implemented this year, said Lt. Col. Rick Garcia, the AFPC retirements and separations branch chief. The board will review records of senior airmen in overmanned career fields who have a Jan. 1, 2013, or earlier date of rank.

Senior airmen must have three years time in service and six months time in grade to be eligible to test for promotion to staff sergeant, so some of the Airmen eligible to meet the ERB will also be eligible to test for staff sergeant. Approximately 36,000 senior airmen are eligible to test for staff sergeant in the spring test cycle.

No matter the ailment, if it affects the skin, the U.S. Air Force Hospital Langley Dermatology clinic is here to assist the needs of U.S. Service members.

With growing medical needs for military members, the dermatology clinic specializes in treating hair, skin and nail conditions.

“Our mission is to provide consultative and direct dermatological care,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Meckell Woodruff, 633rd Medical Operations Squadron Dermatology clinic noncommissioned officer in charge. “[The Dermatology Clinic] will see patients that can’t be treated at their primary care clinic or who require a skin expert.”

The Dermatology Clinic treats active duty Service members and their dependents with referrals from their primary care physicians.

Once the referral reaches referral management, the patient is then able to schedule an appointment with the clinic.

When a patient contacts the clinic to schedule an appointment, the clinic will refer them to another military treatment facility or a civilian provider if there is no availability within 28 days or the patient isn’t active duty or a dependent.

“We are always getting new patients. If a patient has already been seen by us, we will continue follow up appointments,” said Woodruff. “We only have one dermatologist.

We make a conscious effort to ensure that all of our active duty members are seen. “ The Dermatology clinic diagnoses and provides treatment for many different hair, skin and nail conditions, ranging from dermatitis to skin cancer as well as procedures such as laser treatments and chemical peels.

“We treat common conditions of the skin such as psoriasis, eczema, moles, skin infections, rashes and skin growths,” said Woodruff. “We also evaluate and treat hair loss or disorders, and conditions of the nails.”

To assist with these conditions, the Dermatology clinic can provide different treatments such as Botox injections and Phototherapy.

Botox injections help individuals diagnosed with hyperhidrosis, a condition that causes extensive sweating, when medicines used on the skin do not work.

The clinic also uses Phototherapy, a clinical approach of using ultraviolet light to treat

various skin conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema and vitiligo.

Even though the Dermatology clinic can assist with a variety of conditions, the main goal is to find skin cancer, diagnose and treat it, said U.S. Air Force Maj. Jason Boyd, 633rd Medical Operations Squadron chief of dermatology. One of their main concerns is aiding in prevention, early detection and treatment of skin cancer.

According to the Dermatology clinic, skin cancer is the most prevalent of all cancers.

Extensive exposure to sunlight, including tanning, is the main cause of skin cancer, especially when it results in sunburn and blisters. Service members who periodically selfexamine their body for any skin changes can prevent potentially life-threatening illnesses.

Woodruff offers potentially lifesaving skin care advice to all Service members.

“Sun avoidance is the best defense against skin cancer,” said Woodruff. “We encourage our patients to avoid intentional sun exposure, wear protective clothing and consistently use sunscreen.”

Service members interested in being seen at the Dermatology clinic should contact their primary care physician.

The dermatology clinic is an example of how the U.S. Air Force Hospital Langley is continuously searching to satisfy and meet the health needs of its customers.

First Lady Michelle Obama announced that more than 100 construction industry companies have committed to hiring more than 100,000 military veterans over the next ďŹ ve years.

Obama and Labor Secretary Thomas E. Perez delivered remarks at the National Symposium on Veterans’ Employment in Construction, hosted at the Labor Department.

The event brought together construction industry ofďŹ cials, government leaders and education professionals to highlight hiring commitments throughout the industry, and it addressed employment challenges and opportunities for transitioning service members and veterans.

The ďŹ rst lady called the commitment to veterans “a huge deal,â€? adding, “It’s days like today that remind me why Dr. [Jill] Biden and I started Joining Forces in the ďŹ rst place.â€?

Joining Forces is a national initiative championed by the ďŹ rst lady and the vice president’s wife to engage all sectors of society to give service members and their family members opportunities and support. “We did this because we wanted to inspire businesses and organizations across the country to ask themselves one simple question: ... What more can we do to honor and support our veterans and military families?â€? the ďŹ rst lady said. “And today all of you answered that question with this incredibly strong commitment,â€? As part of Joining Forces, the ďŹ rst lady and Dr. Biden issued a call to 50 U.S. governors to take executive or legislative action to streamline state licensing for service members, veterans and their spouses by the end of 2015. Today, 44 states have passed legislation that streamlines the process for service members and veterans to obtain civilian certiďŹ cation and licensure, according to a White House fact sheet.

In his remarks, Perez noted that the Labor Department’s latest employment report indicates the private sector has created 8.5 million jobs over the last 47 months.

The construction industry showed one of the most dramatic growth rates, he said, adding more jobs in January than in any month since March 2007.

The construction industry is expected to create more than 1.5 million jobs by 2022, Perez said, adding that the industry has long maintained a proven training and employment infrastructure. “Through apprenticeships, certiďŹ cation and credentialing programs provided by labor unions and individual employers, veterans can translate their skills into indemand civilian occupations,â€? the secretary said. “Nearly 8 percent of all registered apprentices are veterans,â€? he added, “while 23 percent of apprentices are active military members learning skills in over 120 occupations ranging from airframe mechanics to ďŹ reďŹ ghters.â€?

If a child served in a uniformed service before completing college, his or her maximum age for eligibility will be increased by the number of years served, up to five years. Qualified students with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale will be considered for selection based on scholastic ability, participation in extracurricular and community activities, as well as financial need.

Fort Eustis 10K run The 16th annual Fort Eustis 10K run will take place at 9 a.m. March 1. This is a Peninsula Track Club Grand Prix event, which will be run entirely on Fort Eustis. The race will start at the corner of Lee Boulevard and end at Anderson Field House at 643 Dickman St. The course surface is 99 percent flat asphalt roadways. The race route will run past the historic Matthew Jones House, along the James River with a view of the Ghost Fleet, near Fort Crawford and then past the site of an early American brick factory located on Mulberry Island.

Parking, restrooms and shower facilities will be available for use at Anderson Field House. Water stations will be provided at locations throughout the race course and at the finish line. T-shirts are guaranteed to all preregistered runners and to others while supplies last. Plaques will be awarded to the top three male and female runners in various age groups.

The cost is $30 for registrations received on or before Feb. 26 and $35 after; race day registration starts at 7 a.m. Online registration is available at www.active.com.

Free ‘War of 1812’ lecture

The College of William and Mary’s ROTC will host Military Appreciation Day at 1 p.m. Feb. 15 at Plumeri Park at 221 Ironbound Road in Williamsburg. ■ Origami Time – 6 to 8:30 p.m., on Thursdays from Feb. 20 through March 13. Come join us and learn how to make decorative boxes, animals, flowers and jewelry using the art of Japanese paper folding. ■ Papermaking Workshop – 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Feb. 22. Students can create handmade papers from materials found in nature. Art and recycling will be combined to produce papers suitable for framing, journaling, sculpting, mixed media and printmaking. Bring a bagged lunch.

Free Access to National Parks The military version of the annual “America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreation Lands Pass” is available to active-duty Service members and activated National Guard and Reserves. The pass grants free access at National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Army Corps sites and other public lands. Service members and their dependents can pick up a pass at any national park or wildlife refuge that charges an entrance fee or standard amenity fees.

The pass covers the owner and accompanying passengers in a single, private, non-commercial vehicle at recreation sites that charge per vehicle. At sites where per-person entrance fees are charged, it covers the pass owner and three accompanying visitors ages 16 and older. There is no entry fee for children ages 15 and under.
