The Fort Eustis Tax Assistance Center celebrated it’s grand opening to the Joint Base Langley-Eustis community Feb. 8, 2015, at Fort Eustis, Virginia. The center, which is located at 2733 Madison Ave. on Fort Eustis, opens annually to assist active duty Service members, their dependents and retirees in ﬁling and preparing their tax returns. “The goal is to make sure every customer gets the proper amount on their return, while providing the best customer service we can,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Tonia Filmore, Fort Eustis Tax Center quality reviewer, adding that the volunteers are trained to provide service for intermediate tax services including a ﬁrst mortgage,

but not a second mortgage, health savings account or a business. With walk-ins and scheduled appointments available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, the center aims to take away the stress of finding a local filing service. “It’s important to have a tax center here because it’s close enough for the [Service members] to come in, file their claim and get back to their other duties,” said Filmore. “They also don’t need to pay for the resource here, it’s provided and they still get them same service they would at another facility.” To make an appointment with the tax center, call 878-2343. Customers must bring the following items to their appointments: Q Last year’s federal and state income tax returns Q All W-2, 1099 (DIV, T, INT R) and 1098 forms

Imagine a child just fell at the park. What to do if the tooth is broken, out of place or knocked out? The two most common causes of dental trauma are accidental falls and sports; therefore, children are at a higher risk of dental trauma. Below is an overview of the most common types of dental trauma and what parents need to know. With any head or facial trauma, if there are lacerations, bleeding, loss of consciousness or change in behavior, take the child to the emergency room immediately. Teeth are very important, but secondary to the overall well-being of a child. Take a child to the dentist immediately if the following has occurred- tooth has a large fracture with bleeding inside tooth, tooth is out of position or extremely loose or the tooth has come out completely. Q Fractured tooth: If a piece of the tooth is missing, the dentist may be able to reattach it or re-create it with ﬁlling materi-

al. If a small piece of tooth is missing and the child doesn’t have pain, this is not an emergency but should be addressed as soon as possible. Be wary that a child doesn’t cut their tongue or lip on a sharp edge until the dentist is able to repair the fracture. If there is a larger piece missing and red or bleeding is visible in the middle of the remaining tooth, this requires immediate treatment. Go immediately to a dentist or the ER and bring any pieces of tooth remaining. Q “Bruised tooth”: If the tooth has been hit with force but did not fracture, it may be “bruised”. The tooth may or may not appear to be loose. Either way, other injuries should be treated and a dentist should examine the tooth periodically to make sure the tooth remains healthy. It is possible that many years down the road, the tooth will become unhealthy and may begin to change color. Regular dental visits will help identify and treat this early. If the tooth is loose enough that you fear it will displace or fall out, go to a dentist or the ER. Otherwise, make a dentist ap-

pointment as soon as possible. Q Displaced tooth: If the tooth was hit hard enough and did not fracture, it may be out of position. It may be too far forward or backward or into or out of its socket. It is possible the root of the tooth is fractured or the bone is fractured. Avoid displacing the tooth any further and limit the child from touching the area. Bring the child to a dentist or the ER. The dentist may reposition the tooth and “splint” it with wire to the neighboring teeth for a limited time. As with a “bruised” tooth, it is possible that the tooth may become unhealthy many years after the injury. Therefore, a child should inform any future dentists of the injury in order to observe that tooth. Q Missing or avulsed tooth: If the tooth was knocked out, immediate action can help save the tooth. Try not to touch the root of the tooth and do not clean off the tooth as the cells left on it can help it survive. It is important to keep the cells on the root healthy by storing the tooth in a proper liquid while bringing the child to a dentist or the ER. The best liquid is one designed speciﬁcally to store a tooth (such as “Save a Tooth”), which can be

obtained at a variety of retailers and can be kept in the ﬁrst aid kit at home, in the car or in a coach’s bag for sports events. Milk is the next best liquid. Do not store the tooth in water. If there are no other options, the child can store the tooth in their mouth, just be careful they do not swallow it, or they can put the tooth into a cup. A dentist may replant the tooth and “splint” it with wire to the neighboring teeth. They may also prescribe antibiotics or other medications. If possible, bring the child’s immunization record, as the ER and dentist will want to make sure the child’s immunizations are up to date and may supplement them if required. The dentist may follow up periodically to ensure the tooth returns to normal. As with bruised and displaced teeth, it is possible that the tooth will require additional treatment. Proper immediate management of dental trauma is critical. However, the most successful form of protection is prevention. Through 6-month checkups, thorough home care and proper protection during play and sports children’s teeth have the potential to grow into healthy adult teeth.

WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- Beginning Feb. 5, active-duty female Airmen will receive up to 12 continuous, nontransferable weeks of fully paid maternity leave in accordance with Defense Department-wide changes to the policy outlined in Defense Secretary Ash Carter’s Force of the Future announcement Jan. 28. This new policy applies to all Airmen in the active-duty component, and those Reserve component service members on orders to active service for a continuous period of at least 12 months. Airmen who are currently on maternity leave will automatically be granted a 42day extension. Those Airmen currently on approved ordinary leave in conjunction with their maternity leave are authorized to convert their regular leave to nonchargeable maternity leave, not to exceed a total of 12 weeks. Commanders may not disapprove maternity leave, which begins immediately following a birth event or release from hospitalization following a birth event for a continuous 12-week period. This policy in no way restricts unit commanders

or medical professionals from granting convalescent leave in excess of 12 weeks if a medical authority deems that leave is warranted. A birth event refers to any birth of a child or children to a female service member wherein the child or children are retained by the mother. Multiple children resulting from a single pregnancy will be treated as a single event so long as the multiple births occur within the same 72-hour period. The new policy also protects Airmen from any disadvantages in their career, including but not limited to assignments, performance appraisals or selection for professional military education, as a result of maternity leave taken. In addition, DOD is requesting legislative changes to paternity leave. “We will seek authorities to increase paid paternity leave for new fathers from 10 to 14 days, which they can use in addition to annual leave,” Carter said. Airmen with questions can contact their chain of command or local force support squadron for more details on eligibility, applicability and any other speciﬁcs related to the new beneﬁt as the Air Force begins incorporating the changes into appropriate regulations and guidance.

The Scholarships for Military Children Program is accepting applications from eligible students at commissaries worldwide. The scholarship grants, worth $2000 each, will be awarded for the 2016-17 school year. Applicants must be a dependent, unmarried child, younger than 21 – or 23, if enrolled as a full-time student at a college or university – of a Service member on activeduty, Reserve or National Guard member, retiree or survivor of a military member who died while on active-duty, or survivor of a retiree. Application packages must be hand-delivered or mailed via the U.S. Postal Service or other delivery methods to the commissary where the applicant’s family normally shops, by close of business Feb. 12. Applications cannot be emailed or faxed. Applicants should ensure that they and their sponsor are enrolled in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System database and have a military ID card. The applicant must attend or plan to attend an accredited college or university, full time, in the fall or be enrolled in studies designed to transfer to a four-year program. Applicants who are awarded a full scholarship or receive an appointment to one of the military academies or afﬁliated preparatory schools are not eligible to receive funds from this program. A full scholarship is usually deﬁned as one that provides for payment of tuition, books, lab fees and other expenses.
