TRADOC sees role of Army aviation growing while force downsizes

With a smaller, leaner force in the future, aviation will play a bigger and more signiďŹ cant role than it has over the last decade, said the Army’s Training and Doctrine Command [TRADOC] commander.

Speaking before members of the Association of the U.S. Army today at its annual aviation symposium and exposition, Gen. Robert W. Cone said the risks associated with a smaller Army can be mitigated by continuing investments in aviation and by ďŹ nding balance between near-term and long-term readiness of the force. “TRADOC certainly has a central role in that we design the future operational environment on how we’re going to ďŹ ght, where we’re going to ďŹ ght and what the requirements are going to be,â€? he said. “Then they are translated to strategies, capstone concepts, organizations and then ultimately into speciďŹ c capabilities that we choose to buy.â€?

Cone said the near-term versus longterm readiness challenge is that the Army will get to a point where trade-offs will be necessary. The trick, he said, is not to buy too much near-term readiness at the expense of the long-term modernization programs.

He told the audience that on a recent trip to Fort Hood, Texas, he talked with Soldiers from the 3rd Cavalry Regiment and 1st Armored Division, who told him that for the last 10 years “they have been

all about readiness and combat capability.� “Probably the greatest accomplishment that the Army has had in the last 10 or 11 years is the development of this generation,� he continued. “If you start telling them they can’t train, they’re going to have a very hard time with that, and it would be my assessment that many of them, certainly the best of them, would start to walk away from the Army as a future. “They’re not interested in being in a hollow Army, so on the one hand you have to invest in near-term readiness, not only for them, but for a very uncertain world and our requirement to maintain a ready force while not bankrupting the future,� he said.

Cone said the role of Army aviation will continue to grow because the conditions under which enemies, nation-states, proxies and non-state actors, challenge the United States will remain ambiguous.

He said the conicts will probably be conducted over extended distances and complex terrain. “Aviation will clearly be in higher demand,â€? he said. “There will be very difďŹ cult terrain, altitude issues, engine power requirements and then speed mobile operations conducted over great distances and over more difďŹ cult terrain are certainly going to drive our future and the kinds of platforms that we build.â€?

OfďŹ cers and enlisted Airmen getting promoted in March will experience pay delays because of the Military Personnel Data System upgrade occurring that month. “Individuals to promote from March 4 to 26 will not get their promotions updated in MilPDS because of the upgrade,â€? said Lt. Col. Shelley Strong, the Air Force Personnel Center operations division chief. “Their promotions will be projected in MilPDS and will automatically update as soon as the system is back online.â€?

Airmen are authorized to sew on their new rank on their respective promotion dates, but they will not receive an increase in pay until their promotion is updated in MilPDS and processed by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service. “Unfortunately, until MilPDS is back online, promotions that become effective during this window will not be able to be pro-

Airmen should contact their base military personnel section if their promotion information is not updated in vMPF within 10 days after the MilPDS upgrade is completed. Base military personnel sections will track local personnel records to avoid overpayment for Airmen who received a promotion cancellation or delay. AFPC ofďŹ cials are also requesting that base com-

manders accomplish Stripes for Exceptional Performer promotions before the MilPDS upgrade to avoid pay delays.

The Air Force is upgrading and transferring the Military Personnel Data System to the Defense Information Systems Agency’s Defense Enterprise Computing Center in March. The upgrade project is scheduled to take approximately 23 days to complete, during which time, MilPDS will not be available.

The information above also applies to Reserve promotions. Reserve members should contact their MPS if their promo-

tion information is not updated in vMPF within 10 days after MilPDS upgrade is completed. More information is available on the myPers website.

Guard members should review the “MilPDS Upgrade and Migration Guidance – Unit Assigned Members� section on the myPers website, under the “Alerts� or “Announcements for Airmen� sections.

MilPDS is the primary records database for personnel data and actions that occur throughout every total force Airman’s career. MilPDS is also used to initiate pay actions, maintain Air Force accountability and strength data and support a host of interactions with other Air Force processes and systems that rely on personnel data.

OfďŹ cials will continue to release additional information and guidance to the Air Force’s manpower, personnel, services and pay communities and total force Airmen to continue to educate them on how the service will perform critical personnel and pay tasks during the MilPDS upgrade.

Since 1789, there have been 57 Presidential Inaugurations, all of which included a U.S. military presence. The 2013 Inauguration of President Barack Obama provided a rare opportunity to honor the commander-in-chief for the Soldiers of the “Siegesrader” battalion, the 53rd Movement Control Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade.

It was new territory for the unit, but they accepted the mission with honor and a true sense of duty.

The battalion, traditionally known for its ability to coordinate the movement of goods and personnel by land, air and sea, was called to the nation’s capital to plan, coordinate and synchronize the inaugural parade in support of the Presidential Inauguration Committee, according to Maj. Clarisse Scott, Joint Task Force – National Capital Region joint team parade officer in charge, and a member of the 53rd MCB. The task force was comprised of roughly 200 Service members authorized by the Secretary of Defense to support the committee. JTF-NCR tasked an additional 5,000 Service members from all branches of the armed forces, including active duty, Reservists and National Guardsmen, to help with parade organization, barricading the streets along the parade route, performing ceremonial music and participating in the color guard.

The 53rd MCB’s role was to ensure event participants were processed at a separate location outside the National Mall, before transported to the parade route to be lined up properly on Inauguration day.

Scott said when JTP arrived, they hit the ground running – using data from previous inaugurations.

“I’ve been able to put the training I received overseas, coordinating large scale operations, to good use when planning this inaugural parade,” she said.

The Soldiers assigned to “Siegesrader” battalion did not take this opportunity lightly.

“I feel very proud and excited to be here.

I have an important job guiding people to their proper places,” said Spc. Francisco Rodriguez, a JTP entry control point sentry at the parade staging area near the Pentagon. “If media arrives, I send them to the proper area; if parade participants arrive, I send them to the assigned staging area.”

ducted a full-scale dress rehearsal on the streets of Washington. The streets were closed off from 4 a.m. until late afternoon on Inauguration day. Soldiers were up as early at 2 a.m. helping to set up barriers, signs and other necessities for both the rehearsal and the actual event.

On Inauguration Day, JTP cordoned off the streets well before 9:30 a.m. At the parade staging area, buses arrived and were screened by the Secret Service and escorted to their proper position within the parade.

Service members, some assigned to the 53rd MCB, led the 10,000-person parade as part of the Presidential Escort from the Capitol to the White House. At the end, the team ushered the participants on to the buses and to their destination near the National Mall.

“I can’t imagine standing out there in a street for six or seven hours. I can definitely empathize with those guys and gals out there,” said one pedestrian about the Service members along the parade route.

“It takes courage to become a good leader. You have to be fearless enough to take risks, but also learn from your mistakes,” said Lolethia D. Gordon.

After 20 years of military service as a U.S. Army human resources specialist Gordon currently serves as the U.S. Army Medical Command Human Resources Division chief at Fort Eustis’ McDonald Army Health Center. She leads her division through hard work, dedication and exceptional leadership.

“I believe my past Army experiences have prepared me for higher levels of leadership,” she said.

“They have helped me to develop into a strong, compassionate and confident leader. Over the years my military training has enabled me to deal with difficult situations.”

Gordon’s effectiveness as a leader earned her MEDDAC’s Lt. Col Karen Wagner Leadership Award.

The award, named in honor of an Army officer killed during the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagon, is presented annually to recognize individuals who demonstrate traits of leadership, professionalism, technical competence and customer service.

“Receiving this award is one of the most incredible experiences of my career as a Soldier or civilian employee,” she said. “I couldn’t have accomplished anything without my amazing staff. I’m thankful for all the support that they have given me while serving as the MEDDAC HR chief.”

Since 2008, Gordon has worked as a civilian employee supporting MEDDAC by providing HR support to Soldiers and civilians at MCAHC. She also manages HR and finance support for Alpha Company of the post’s War-

rior Transition Unit and oversight to the Community-Based WTU at Fort Story in Virginia Beach.

According to Gordon, her staff received six commendable ratings during the Northern Regional Medical Command Fiscal Year 2012 Organizational Inspection Program and received 98 percent rating during the WTU Defense Finance and Accounting Service Finance Inspection. This rating established the command as one of the best WTU Finance operations throughout DFAS. “Her technical expertise has made her a trusted advisor on all personnel matters,” said Maj. Jeffrey Shaw, duty commander for administration.

“Ms. Gordon is a great role model to all Soldiers and civilians. Her ‘can do’ attitude and work ethic is contagious and it allows her division to perform at their highest level.”

Shaw said Gordon’s technical competence has been proven time and again. On July 17, 2012, her section underwent two simultaneous inspections evaluating the tracking of personnel action and the Elecontronic Military Personnel Officer operation.

Gordon’s section received “all greens” in the 42 HR sections during NRMC’s Staff Assistance Visit Inspection and received a 100 percent from the Installation Military Personnel Office.

Under Gordon’s leadership, her division has accomplished a variety of HR milestones and has been recognized for several record achievements.

Through it all, Gordon has continued her commitment to excellence and her leadership has left a blueprint for success.

“Most importantly I’d like to thank the Soldiers who we serve for their dedicated service to our nation,” she said. “Without them none of us would be doing what we do.”

Air Force implements hiring freeze for civilians

Air Force senior leaders directed a force-wide hiring freeze among other workforce actions in a memorandum sent to senior commanders Jan. 16.

The actions are part of the Air Force’s efforts to pursue reversible or recoverable steps to avoid impacts in core readiness caused by the looming possibility of sequestration and budgetary shortfalls.

Civilian pay makes up a large share of the Air Force’s operating budget. With budgetary uncertainty and a projected fiscal year 2013 $1.8 billion shortfall in the Air Force funding for overseas contingency operations, Air Force leadership is taking these immediate actions to reduce the force’s expenditure rate.

The temporary hiring freeze applies to all positions open to applicants outside the Air Force for permanent, temporary and term vacancies in all appropriations, according to the memo. Reassignments and promotions within the current work force will continue because they do not affect the current force size.

The memo, issued by Lt. Gen. Darrell Jones, deputy chief of staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., states hiring actions already in progress where a selection

was made and an entry on duty date already established will continue, and set EODs may remain. External hiring actions where a job offer has not been made will be withdrawn. Exemptions from previous hiring controls do not carry over.

Additionally, commanders are directed to immediately release temporary employees, and not renew term employees. All temporary and term employees, to include re-employed annuitants that are not considered mission critical, should be separated in accordance with already established procedures.

More specific guidance on actions related to the civilian workforce hiring freeze and management of temporary and term employees is being developed and will be distributed through command channels as soon as details are available.

“These are uncharted waters concerning the federal budget and the effect it will have on the Air Force,” Jones said in the memo. “It is imperative we work closely together to balance mission needs and minimize impacts to our dedicated civilian employees and their families.”

PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD Community Involvement Plan for Joint Base Langley-Eustis (Fort Eustis) Environmental Restoration Program Joint Base Langley-Eustis (JBLE) (Fort Eustis) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers invite the public to review and comment on the Community Involvement Plan for the JBLE (Fort Eustis) Environmental Restoration Program.

Fort Eustis was formally added to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Priority List in 1994 because of documented releases of hazardous substances to surface water. Since that designation, several investigations and cleanup work have taken place on the installation. Fort Eustis now has 19 active sites undergoing some type of environmental investigation, restoration, removal action, or long term monitoring effort. This Community Involvement Plan is an update to the plan published in 2006.

You are encouraged to comment on the plan during the Public Comment Period, Jan. 25 to Feb. 25.

Ray Odierno laid out 15 â&#x20AC;&#x153;near-termâ&#x20AC;? actions to help the Army â&#x20AC;&#x153;reduce our expenditure rate and mitigate budget execution risks in order to avoid even more serious future ďŹ scal shortfalls.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;We expect commanders and supervisors at all levels to implement both the guidance contained in this memorandum and the detailed instructions to follow,â&#x20AC;? wrote McHugh and Odierno. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The ďŹ scal situation and outlook are serious.â&#x20AC;?

What happens now?

First among those actions is an immediate freeze on civilian hiring, though Army leaders have left commanders with some latitude in the policy for â&#x20AC;&#x153;humanitarian and mission-critical purposes.â&#x20AC;? Also among employment-related measures spelled out in the memo is a termination of temporary employees when â&#x20AC;&#x153;consistent with mission requirements.â&#x20AC;?

The memo also directs installation commanders to reduce base operations support for ďŹ scal year 2013, which runs from Oct. 1, 2012 to Sep. 30, 2013, to levels rougly 70 percent of ďŹ scal year 2012. Commanders have been asked to reduce support to community and recreational activities and to also reduce utilities consumption â&#x20AC;&#x153;to the maximum extent possible.â&#x20AC;?

Non-mission-essential training activities are also up for reduction. In particular, training not related to maintaining â&#x20AC;&#x153;readiness for Operation Enduring Freedom, the Korean forward-deployed units, Homeland Defense and the Division Ready Brigade.â&#x20AC;? Also targeted is conference attendance and professional training that is not mission essential.

The assistant secretary of the Army for acquisition, logistics and technology must also assess the impacts of â&#x20AC;&#x153;budgetary uncertaintyâ&#x20AC;? on science and technology accounts.

The secretary and chief of staff state civilian furloughs could be a â&#x20AC;&#x153;last resortâ&#x20AC;? possibility in ďŹ scal year 2013. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Therefore, no action should be taken with regard to furloughs without the express approval of the secretary of the Army.â&#x20AC;?

Any measures taken as a result of the Jan. 16 memo must be reversible, the document states. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At this point, the steps should focus on actions that are reversible if the budgetary situation improves and should minimize harm to readiness,â&#x20AC;? McHugh and Odierno write.

The memo also notes that â&#x20AC;&#x153;funding related to wartime operations and Wounded Warrior programsâ&#x20AC;? will not be affected.

President Barack Obama opened the first inaugural ball last night extending “extraordinary gratitude” to the men and women in uniform and promised to ensure they have everything they need as they defend Americans’ freedoms every day.

Speaking to hundreds of Service members, including wounded warriors and Medal of Honor recipients, Gold Star families and veterans gathered at the Commander in Chief’s Ball, and via a televised webcast with troops deployed to Afghanistan, the president said it’s impossible to say “thank you” enough to those who serve.

“Thank you for volunteering. Thank you for stepping up. Thank you for keeping us strong. Thank you for always making us proud,” he told the gathering.

“I have no greater honor than being your commander in chief,” he said, drawing enthusiastic applause.

Obama listed some of the accomplishments made possible during the past four years, and vowed to ensure the military has what it needs for continued success.

“It’s because of you that with honor we were able to end the war in Iraq. Because of you that we delivered justice to Osama bin Laden. Because of you that it’s even possible to give Afghans a chance to determine their own destiny,” he said. “We are going forward, and we’ll keep our military

Your mailbox is full.

That annoying message seems to appear whenever we have an important email to send, or we are waiting for a vital communication.

Most people are limited to 100MB maximum mailbox size. Trying to keep an inbox to a size where it is not plagued by constant warnings from the Exchange server can prove to be a daunting task. It behooves us all to take a look at our mailboxes and clear out what we truly don’t need to retain.

A few years ago, Merlin Mann developed a philosophy called “Zero Inbox.”

This Zero Inbox philosophy can be an effective way for us to pare our mailboxes down and make us more effective at our jobs. Mann’s organization tactics are streamlined into five categories:

Delete or archive E-mail that has been read, resolved or has no sway on your business should be

immediately deleted or archived.

Delegate If an e-mail needs to be forwarded to another person in order to complete a task, forward it. As usual, don’t forget to follow up with that person to ensure the task has been completed.

Respond Not all e-mail requires a response.

Some can simply be acted upon. Entering a meeting into your calendar is a good example of this. In the event that you do need to send a reply to someone’s message, keep it short and to the point, no more than five lines in length.

Defer If you don’t have enough information to take action on an e-mail, or your response to a message is dependent on the work of others, come back to it later. The Zero Inbox philosophy demands that after you’ve read a message, move it out of your inbox by setting up a folder for

deferred action. And don’t let this folder get out of control.

Do If you can take care of a task sent to you via e-mail, do so immediately and get it out of the way. Once the task is completed – you guessed it – delete it from your inbox. Or archive it.

Those are the basic categories the Zero

Inbox philosophy requires. Your particular job or position may require you to have a few (or several) more folders. However, if you effectively employ the tactics described in this philosophy, this can be a great weapon in the war against inbox bloat and counterproductivity. Keep in mind that these folders you create should always be in a PST file that is saved on your local hard drive, not on a network share drive.

The inspections are one in a series of moves the Air Force has undertaken to combat sexual assault. The Air Force conducted bystander intervention training service-wide, examined supplementary training for commanders and made multiple avenues of support available to every victim of sexual assault. Counseling, medical, mental health, and safety services, a victimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advocate and both on and offbase providers are available.

Air Combat Command has released its results for the service-wide health and welfare inspections that were completed in an effort to emphasize an environment of respect, trust and professionalism in the workplace. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sexual harassment and sexual assault have no place in our Air Force, yet both continue to affect the Air Forceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mission and harm our Airmen,â&#x20AC;? said Gen. Mike Hostage, commander of Air Combat Command. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Any environment that encourages or tolerates holdovers from our past such as offensive pictures or songs is unacceptable. Our Airmen deserve a safe, professional work environment free from harassment.â&#x20AC;?

The purpose of the inspection was to reinforce expectations for the workplace environment, correct deďŹ ciencies, and deter conditions that may be detrimental to good order and discipline.

Commanders looked for and removed items that hinder a professional working environment in three broad categories: offensive or inappropriate, unprofessional or pornographic. The inspections took place in government workspaces and shared common areas such as briefing rooms and break rooms, as well as on shared computer drives.

ACC units reported 17,790 items found. The room was alive with movement as doctors, dressed in scrubs and white coats, rushed to meet with patients inbetween transcribing notes from recent appointments. The sound of keyboards clicking and papers shuffling filled the room as two doctors leaned over their desks to discuss a case file.

The collaborative conversation ended abruptly as the two realized the time and rushed off to appointments in their respective clinics.

This lively scene is a typical day at the newly opened multiservice clinic at U.S. Air Force Hospital Langley, Langley Air Force Base, Va. In an effort to streamline and centralize patient care, the multi-speciality clinic opened Nov. 17, 2012, boasting Orthopedic, Otolaryngology, Oral Surgery, Urology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology and General Surgery services in one area.

The combined clinic allows Langley hospital health professionals in various specialties to consult each other on the spot to find the best treatments for their patients, and share different approaches to treat illnesses.

“As a general surgeon, I have a great amount of knowledge about surgical procedures and medicine,” said Dr. [U.S.Air Force Maj.] Gary Weissenfluh, 633rd Surgical Operations Squadron, general surgeon. “Even with all of that knowledge, it is invaluable to have different specialists within an arm’s reach to provide insight to my cases.”

Not only does the integrated clinic allow the health professionals to communicate in a more effective and efficient manner, it offers the patients the unique ability to receive multidisciplinary care in a patient-centric environment, said Col. Claude Hawkins, 633rd Surgical Operations Squadron commander.

“The multidisciplinary clinic provides an increase in efficiency for the staff and a major improvement for patients,” said Hawkins.

As one of the services offered at the multiservice clinic, the General Surgery Clinic provides specialized care by surgeons trained at premier medical schools throughout the country. Four general surgeons stand ready to offer a wide range

of services at any time, day or night.

The clinic specializes in repairing internal organs, such as the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and the thyroid gland. Additionally, Langley surgeons are certified to perform laparoscopic surgery, a relatively new minimal-access technique using cameras and instruments inserted through small incisions.

These smaller incisions ultimately benefit patients by reducing pain, resulting in less post-operative scarring and quicker recovery time, allowing them to return to everyday life faster than conventional surgery, said Weissenfluh.

Weissenfluh and the other surgeons at the hospital devote their knowledge to providing high-quality care and commitment for Joint Base Langley-Eustis personnel and their families, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Not only are the surgeons highly

skilled, they also practice in cutting-edge facilities with the best equipment available. U.S. Air Force Hospital Langley is constantly looking for new, more efficient means to treat patients, and facilitates 115,000 surgical-outpatient visits and more than 2,200 procedures, annually.

“As doctors, we have a responsibility to treat our patients to the best of our abilities,” said Weissenfluh. “This expansion has already allowed Langley doctors to work together to provide a higher level of care than ever before.”

Even with the high volume of procedures, the clinic focuses on a personal and patient-centered approach to treat each case. This includes timely and thorough initial evaluations leading to surgical treatment from beginning to end.

Patient care is the top priority for all surgeons in the clinic, said Dr. [Capt.] Kelley Meehan, 633rd SGCS general surgeon.

“The health professionals are here to take care of the patients,” she said. “We are willing to make changes for the better.”

The surgical squadron started expanding in 2008 with the design and construction of five new operating rooms and a 12-bed same-day surgery recovery suite completed in 2010. The state-of-the-art rooms increased the capacity for surgeries, creating a efficient space for patients to undergo outpatient surgeries.

“The unit was created to offer a one-stop shop for patients,” Hawkins said. “The expansion of the Langley hospital has been a dynamic process. The Air Force Medical Service has invested resources to the hospital so we can provide a full range of services to the beneficiaries in this area.”

EustisCommunity Bridge replacement project Preconstruction activities have begun to prepare the Fort Eustis Boulevard NSX Railway overpass for construction. The exact lane closure dates will be determined on or around March 1, but expect closures to begin no later than March 15.

This construction will have an immediate impact on traffic flow to and from Fort Eustis. Organizations are encouraged to implement preplanned mitigation strategies to alleviate traffic congestion. Anticipate 15-24 months for completion of repairs to the bridge.

SCFE scholarships The Spouses’ Club of Fort Eustis is offering scholarships to high school seniors and adult continuing education students for the 2012-13 school year. Free Artifacts Roadshow Whether it is an old uniform cap or helmet, a box of medals or ribbons, a flag, sword, rifle, or canteen, every piece of military memorabilia has a story to tell. The Virginia War Memorial will host its third annual Artifacts Roadshow on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at 621 Belvidere St., Richmond. This event is free and open to the public.

War Memorial curator Jesse Smith and military collectables expert Robert House of Virginia Beach will review and offer their opinions on the origin and history of military-related items from all eras. Appraisals and monetary evaluations will not be given.

Resolute Warriors take it to the mats

The words “take off your footgear” are stenciled on the floor. A competitive energy pulses through the building, with people grappling using arm-bars and chokeholds. At the Fort Eustis Combatives Academy, these seemingly violet actions are the basics of the Army’s Modern Combatives Program.

“Army combatives maintains the warrior ethos. It instills the will to fight and engage the enemy,” said Spc. Kendrick Washington Scott, an assistant instructor for the academy currently assigned to the 149th Seaport Operations Company, 10th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade. “If their assigned weapon doesn’t fire, we give them the skills to finish the fight.”

The MCP begins at basic training, where Soldiers learn to maintain and keep accountability of their assigned weapon. Soldiers are taught to never relinquish their weapon to anyone, especially the enemy.

The three basic options specific for combatants are to disengage with the enemy, gain a controlling position and finish the fight.

The first two days of the 40-hour level-one course cover striking and protec-

tion drills. Day three features option-three drills, and provides the first opportunity for Soldiers to get hands-on experience.

“Combatants will engage their opponents and react to contact. They will then utilize one of the three basic clinches that they have been shown in order to tie up their opponent and keep themselves from getting hit,” said Scott.

The brigade’s Soldiers, primarily from the Special Troops Battalion, said they are able and prepared.

“It’s going very well,” said Sgt. Kelsey Miller, assigned to the 558th Transportation Company, STB. “We are going through the movements by repetition after repetition. It is making us stronger than when we first started.”

“It definitely incorporates discipline and hard work,” said Sgt. Aaron Kowall, assigned to the 235th Signal Company, STB. “They really train you extensively here. It is only a week-long course, so there is a lot of work to cover. The trainers have a lot of knowledge and are bringing in techniques I have never heard of.”

On Friday, the trainees must pass a final test before they can move to the Level-Two class.

tact drills, which are option-three drills.

They will have to engage an opponent and use non-deadly force to take them down,” said Staff Sgt. Jedadiah Eustaquio, a level-two instructor assigned to the 368th SOC, 10th Trans. Bn. “Once they graduate, it is up to them to take this training back to their units and train others using these techniques.”

The instructors said that at the end of the course, the Soldiers “will have changed enormously.”

“They are going to be a lot more confident in themselves, grow into more competent warriors and hold up their heads a little higher,” said Eustaquio.

Eustaquio shows the basic level-one fighting stance. The three basic options specific for combatants are to disengage with the enemy, gain a controlling position and finish the fight. Eustaquio said the combatives program helps Soldiers develop confidence in themselves while becoming better-trained, “more competent warriors.”

“Everyone is leaving more confident that they can fight,” Scott added. “If it was challenging before, they now feel encouraged to complete the task. At the end, you will see an evolution of that Soldier to where they are not just ‘high speed,’ but have an added energy different from normal training.”

Not only does the combatives program seem to give confidence to these warriors, it also encourages them to teach others.

“I would definitely pursue Combatives Level-Two, and maybe instruct Level-One, especially to those who may not get the chance to go through the full 40hour course,” said Kowall. “It was a great experience.”
