Like most hoarders, I’m in complete denial.

I see myself as a “collector” of valuable, interesting and sentimental things.

It all started during childhood when I felt compelled to stash away objects in an old antique chifferobe my mother saved from a junk pile and made into a girly bookcase for my room, complete with white paint and happy daisy contact paper.

The upper shelves were stacked with stuffed animals, some of which I still vividly recall: the sawdust filled donkey, the seer-

sucker camel, a Dakin walrus and an ancient Teddy bear with a tinny wind-up music box. Lower shelves held various books such as the entire Laura Ingalls Wilder series my mother hoped I’d read but never did, and my collection of comic books – “Little Dot,” “Casper,” “Richie Rich,” “Wendy,” “Archie” – which were well worn.

But the bottom drawer of my chifferobe contained the real treasure trove.

Squirreled away under a layer of groovy acrylic sweaters and bell-bottomed jeans was a cherished collection of random objects. Having a particular affinity for miniatures, I had an impres-

Back-to-school spending isn’t just about clothes and markers anymore.

In 2014, Forbes reported that Accenture estimated nearly half of respondents reported they would spend $500 or more on back-to-school expenses, including not only clothes and desk supplies, but electronics as well.

Yet there’s one more aspect of back-toschool spending that’s growing and can add hundreds – and sometimes thousands – to a family’s overall K-12 education budget.

Since the 2008 economic crisis, many public school systems have tried to make up for funding shortfalls by adding first-time or expanded fees for sports, extracurricular activities and specialized academics.

This means that back-to-school budgeting, even for families with kids in public school, now requires a more holistic, yearround approach to all academic-related expenses.

Given their potential dollar amounts, parents should examine school fees first.

deductions, many find it easier to just give their stuff to neighbors and friends, and be done with it.

The most common items given away? Houseplants; candles; light bulbs; televisions; exercise equipment; bicycles; strollers; Little Tykes play kitchens, houses, sandboxes and cars; grills; and, of course, booze.

Food also is a popular give away item, but there are mixed reviews from recipients. While everyone loves getting frozen steaks and unopened boxes of brownie mix, nobody wants that dusty can of hearts of palm that never got used. (Rumor has it, there’s a jar of capers that has been passed among so many military families, it’s origins are now unknown.)

Sometimes there are regrets.

We once gave away an expensive leather recliner to a Florida base neighbor because, at the time, it was too big for our living room.

Public education has never been completely free of charge beyond local taxes – parents have traditionally paid extra money to support their kids’ participation in sports, music or other extracurricular activities.

However, many school systems are adding fees for a broader range of offerings including after-school activities, top-level courses, lab-based instruction and even advanced placement classes. So, before spending money on clothes and supplies that can be bought off-season, on sale or possibly used, get a handle on how applicable instruction and activity fees might affect your budget. Parents in financial need may qualify for public aid or grants

After we moved to our base house in Rhode Island, we realized that the chair would have fit perfectly into our new quarters.

I recently found out the Navy senior warrant officer family who acquired our leather chair later got orders to Nevada, so they gave the chair to a Navy JAG family who took it with them to their new assignment in Washington, D. C. But life has a way of closing circles when the time is right.

Last week, we traveled to Maryland to help my 82-year-old mother-in-law clear out the house my husband and his four siblings grew up in. Eight truckloads of musty old junk were carted off to the dump, but somewhere in the heap, my husband unearthed a gem: his deceased father’s favorite leather armchair.

We now realize giving away our trash years ago, enabled us to receive an unexpected treasure.

Consider turning back-to-school shopping into a money lesson. Most kids like to have certain kinds of clothes, shoes or supplies. Those “wants” can be turned into a discussion about spending priorities, value, choice and comparison shopping.

sive assortment of bubble gum machine and Cracker Jack prizes, special rocks, acorns, a toy compass, junk jewelry, macramé key chains, Mexican jumping beans, abandoned crochet projects, old keys and bottle caps.

Thirty years ago, those treasures meant a lot to me, but somewhere along the way I threw them all out. Their time had ended.

Today, I’m still collecting – saltboxes, sea glass and vintage furniture. But thanks to the military, we must get rid of stuff every few years when it’s time to move, and rest assured, I’ll never be one of those people you see on TV living in a house packed to the ceiling with garbage and 17 cats.

Lee dogs, cats must be vaccinated, registered All privately owned dogs and cats over three months old residing on Fort Lee must be vaccinated against rabies, according to a new memorandum issued by Col. Paul K. Brooks, Fort Lee garrison commander.

The updated Fort Lee Policy No. 03-15 – issued Aug. 7 – stated, in part, “The purpose ... is to establish that the installation Veterinary Clinic Staff will manage all facets of the Animal Rabies Control Program to include, but not limited to the registration of animals and immunizations of animals. This policy is intended to prevent

the potential exposure of the rabies virus to humans and other animals.�

The policy noted all animals living on post are to be registered within the first three days of arrival. It applies to “all Fort Lee service

members and civilians residing on Fort Lee with a dog or cat.� “Vaccination against rabies is so important for dogs and cats,� said Sgt. Ariel Pryor, noncommissioned officer in charge of the Fort

Lee Veterinary Facility. “If your dog is not vaccinated and bites another dog or bites a person, the rabies virus could be spread.�

She noted, “Even if a dog licks you, their saliva might be able to get into your system through a cut or sore.

Even cute puppies could carry the virus.�

Pryor said, “If the rabies disease goes untreated, then the person or animal has a possibility of dying.�

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, people who are treated for a rabies bite must receive five injec-

tions – one dose right away, and additional doses on the 3rd, 7th, and 14th days.

They should also get another shot called Rabies Immune Globulin at the same time as the first dose.

Under the commander’s directive, “if the animal received the vaccination prior to reporting to the post, then the owner must show proof of the vaccination with a valid Rabies Certificate issued by a veterinary clinic. If the owner fails to comply with mandatory vaccinations, the owner will be notified in writing through the chain of command. Failure to com-

ply after written notification will result in the animal(s) removal from post. “Veterinary services will sign a memorandum stating compliance with the post policy. All animals not in compliance on routine veterinary visits will be required to be vaccinated against rabies prior to leaving the veterinary clinic,� according to the policy.

Museum provides valuable insights into proud history of Army women There is still much to learn about the military service of Army women, according to Ron Bingham, collection manager at the U.S. Army Women’s Museum here.

“Little has been written about their official history,” he said. “Mattie Treadwell’s book focuses on World War II and Bettie Morden’s book explores the Women’s Army Corps, circa 1948-1978, but there are many unwritten chapters from the time before, during and after those periods of history. It’s our job at the museum to uncover those stories and bring recognition to the many contributions Army women have made and continue to make today.”

Discovering previously unknown and interesting facts about Army women is a fairly routine occurrence at the museum, Bingham noted. Occasionally, the revelations can be “genuine myth-busters.”

“For example, it was once assumed the only female pilots in WWII working for the Army were in the Women’s Airforce Service Pilot program and none of them were assigned to combat units,” he said. “I even remember citing those claims when speaking about the subject in the past. There just wasn’t any proof of women serving in any other fashion.”

A research request, however, quickly changed that perception. A man was looking for information on a relative who he said was a female enlisted pilot, but not a WASP. Bingham told the museum’s research archivist it wasn’t possible. The gentleman was asked to share what information he had, and an examination of the primary documents proved his relative was indeed an Army pilot.

“This got the whole staff digging into records to find out if there were other examples of women on flight status, performing pilot duties,” he said. “Indeed, we now know more than 100 female enlisted Soldiers from the Women’s Army Corps served as pilots flying Army Air Corps aircraft in WWII.” The revelation about women serving in combat settings during the war occurred when the family of former Sgt. Ann Tilson contacted the museum in hopes of donating her water color paintings of Women’s Army Corps Soldiers in England and Germany from 1944-1945.

Bingham corresponded with the family and, after a few months, they decided to donate the artwork and a huge collection of documents pertaining to her service.

As the assistant archivist sifted through the papers, she found letters of commendation and an award recommendation stating Tilson had served honorably while assigned to an engineer brigade in Europe. Part of her job was drawing images for the engineer’s technical manuals.

“This was the first proof we had of WAC’s being assigned below the Army Group level,” Bingham said. “We are continuing the search for other examples.

We also learned recently that a researcher of Third Army history found evidence of WACs being assigned to Patton’s headquarters. It really has changed everything we believed was true about the role of Army women during WWII.” It’s not really a big surprise that stories about the military service of women during much of the 20th Century have remained elusive, Bingham continued.

Back then, the Army struggled with any sort of public relations that revealed the roles of women serving overseas. Service leaders and government officials were worried if word got out about the types of units some women were assigned to, it would reflect badly on those who made the decision to put them in harm’s way.

“Looking at it from that standpoint, we are setting the record straight and giving credit where it’s due,” Bingham said.

“There is no doubt this work is important, because without it, the accomplishments of women Soldiers would never be recognized. It’s a tremendous responsibility, and I’m proud to be part of it.”

Historical research is just one of the many functions of military museums across the Army, Bingham emphasized.

“We are here to protect and preserve histories,” he concluded. “Our vast collections are used for research, and it is through this we discover untold stories.

In no other place does the old saying, ‘you learn something new every day,’ hold more significance. There is still much to discover about our past, and Army museums are here to do just that.”

Please consider the following incident reports before deciding whether this article is worth the time and effort to read.

• In a small western town, two Middle Eastern males waited outside of a former Soldier’s home. When his spouse arrived, they asked in broken English if she was the wife of (a named person) who was an interpreter in Iraq. She nervously said no, but could tell they did not believe her.

They began to ask questions about her children, demonstrating they knew who they were and where they went to school. She ran inside the house and they eventually left, but she will probably never feel safe at her house again. (Multiple incidents reported.)

• Anonymous supporters of ISIS searched social media for posts by DOD-affiliated personnel or family members. When potential “victims” were identified, they began posting anti-American statements and threats (e.g. finding them and cutting off their heads) that not only frightened individuals but also made them fear for their lives. (Incidents continue to be reported.)

• Military members returning from tours of duty in the Middle East unwisely posted celebratory comments on social media about their mission achievements, or derogatory remarks about the people they were fighting.

ISIS supporters who regularly monitor the Internet quickly zeroed in on the remarks and began collecting names and other identifiable information. A call for retaliation went out to others loyal to the terrorist group.

In response, military and community leaders had to take decisive action to protect the individuals. (One specific case reported, but others likely.)

Did any these incidents grab your attention? For the sake of force protection, let’s hope so.

The threat posed by “loose lips” and lax approaches to online security is very real. It has been the impetus of many DOD and FBI warnings over the past several years. In particular, federal employee defense service agencies urge government workers,

military personnel and their friends and family to exercise caution to avoid attracting the attention of ISIS and its supporters. This is especially important when using social media where the terrorist group tries to motivate followers in the U.S. to conduct attacks on its behalf. They also search social media to find, threaten and/or intimidate government personnel.

Because of the false sense of anonymity and assumed security protection the Internet provides, people may not exercise the same caution as they would when meeting someone in person. While the majority of those online do not have malicious intent, dropping one’s guard and providing information without careful consideration opens individuals up to threats.

The Fort Lee Protection Office recommends the following actions to keep community members safe on social media and reduce their vulnerability to becoming a target.

Be wary of strangers. The Internet makes it easy for individuals to misrepresent their identities and motives.

Be aggressive in limiting the people who are allowed to contact you via any web application. When interacting with unknown individuals, be cautious about the amount of information revealed and don’t agree to meet them in person.

Be wary of third-party applications. Do not allow visitors to access social networking accounts, friend lists or address books. Avoid suspicious applications and modify security settings to limit the information others can automatically access.

Do not post personally identifiable information. Think like an attacker.

What would that person need to get to you … an address, family or home photos, information about your routine? Do not post information that would make you vulnerable. Look at the posts by your connections as well.

Are they enough to connect the dots?

Evaluate and take advantage of privacy settings. Some sites allow open access to user profiles. It’s important to regularly check and change security settings so only trusted individu-

als can see your information. Keep in mind, there’s still a risk despite security protocols, so continue to avoid posting anything you wouldn’t want the public to see.

Be cautious about posted images.

Objects in a photo may be more revealing than people pictured. Images posted over time may form a complete mosaic of an individual’s or family’s geographical, employment or personal profile. Do not allow others to tag you in images; this too could contribute to targeting efforts.

Do not use check-ins to indicate your location. This online function can be easily disabled so adversaries can’t track your location or establish routine patterns of movement.

Be cautious when accessing online accounts from public Wi-Fi connections. Someone might have installed software capable of capturing login credentials and other information.

Use strong, unique passwords.

Consider passphrases for an additional level of safety. Incorporate a mixture of numerals, capital letters and symbols. Do not use the same password for multiple accounts.

Use and maintain anti-virus software. Ask a computer expert if unsure about which program to buy. Choose a program with easy-to-use virus scan and infected file removal functions.

Keep the software updated to protect against emerging viruses.

Never forget - the Internet is a worldwide resource and should be treated as a public forum. A lot of information is open to adversaries and strangers even with privacy settings turned on. Do not post anything you would be embarrassed to see on the evening news.

Graduating high school and conducting myself – not just as a decent person but as a man – was my biggest accomplishment because it was something bigger than what people thought I could achieve.”

How you define success: “Giving something your all and never quitting.”

not just because it’s my job to fight foreign enemies, but it’s pride in wearing this uniform and having people thank me for my service. Why you joined the Army: “I have a lot of prior service members in my family. I also joined because I wanted to better myself and prove I could push myself beyond my limits.”

“I’m a previous military spouse, and the idea of working with children and families (was appealing) because I understand what they’re going through,” said the eightyear Child, Youth and School Services employee.

Taswell also was intrigued about having the opportunity to put her degree to work.

“I have a master’s in education, so being able to utilize that in this job is great because you often go to school, get a degree and don’t get to work in the field you were trained in,” she said. “This position affords me the opportunity to use both my education and experience.”

Many parents in the Fort Lee community have begun preparations for the new school year. Their no.

1 concern is ensuring their students have the right supplies and support for a successful academic year.

It should come as no surprise that success or failure at school starts at home.

Studies have linked poor academic performance to factors such as lack of sleep, poor nutrition, obesity and lack of parental support.

Here’s a tip: the Performance Triad can help families set the conditions for a successful new school year.

School-aged children need more sleep than adults. About eight-and-ahalf to 11 hours per night is what research recommends.

Roughly 30-to-40 percent of children are not getting enough sleep.

Because kids can be so

active, especially in the evening, it’s important to gradually bring down the excitement of the day making it more conducive to sleep. For example, turn off the TV, end social media and computer game time and cease physical activity at least an hour before bedtime. These activities are stimulating and make it difficult for children to fall asleep. Instead, encourage them to read a book or take a warm shower – things that induce relaxation.

“Establishing healthy sleep behaviors and environments in early years can have a significant impact on a child’s performance in school for a lifetime,” said Alvina Bey, public health nurse, KAHC. “Many of us remember the adage, ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.’

This is especially true when establishing or improving health behaviors,” The family’s health beliefs, behaviors and practices are important models for children and influence

how they make decisions about health in later years, especially related to sleep, activity and nutrition, the three pillars of the Army Performance Triad. Regular physical exercise activates children’s brains, helping them to focus and pay attention in school.

Rather than recommending specific exercise regimens, Belanger said the basic idea is to get kids to move and burn off excess energy. They should accumulate at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily.

Besides formal exercise plans and school sports, kids can go to the playground, walk the dog and take a trip to the park with their parents. These simple recreational activities are fun, easy to plan and increase time spent together as a family.

It’s been said many times breakfast is the most important meal, and that’s true, especially for children heading out to school.

Breakfast will boost students’ energy levels, there-

by improving their cognitive performance and help them focus better on their lessons.

“Our brains make up about 2 percent of our total body mass, yet it demands 20 percent of our energy needs. Our brains do not store energy like our muscles do,” said Kathy Viau, dietitian, KAHC. “That’s all the more reason to make certain we start our morning with nourishing foods that feed our brains and power us up for the day,” said Viau.

The best plan is for the entire family to eat breakfast together – and other meals as well. Having family time together at meals promotes good nutrition habits, as well as social development.

To save time, prepare part or all of breakfast the night before and spend a

few hours on the weekend preparing foods for weekly family meals.

“Keep it simple. Think: some protein, mostly plants.

Cook up chicken or turkey or lean ground beef in bulk to have on hand. Keep your freezer stocked with steamable bags of frozen veggies.

Whole potatoes, sweet potatoes, brown rice – fruits that are fresh, frozen, canned in their own juice – these are all easy, whole foods to build quick, healthy meals,” Viau encouraged.

For children, healthy meals and snacks should include about 50 percent fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains, dairy, lean protein and healthy fats such as nuts. Food choices from each food group should be natural foods as opposed to processed, she said, adding that’s the same advice for adults.

Parents also need to monitor their children’s caffeine intake.

Soda, tea and energy drinks are the most common caffeine sources and their effect is cumulative.

Many of these also can be high in sugar and calories.

Consuming caffeinated drinks regularly impacts children’s health and their ability to pay attention in school.

Caffeinated beverages also impact a child’s sleep.

Kenner pediatricians recommend children not consume caffeine at all, and especially not within six to eight hours of bedtime.

Instead, drink milk or water. For the sweet tooth, a good replacement for soda is fruit, which is naturally sweet and contain vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Parents also need to get into the habit of reading labels on food products, Viau said. Fat, calories, salt, sugar, additives and ingredients should all be monitored.

Ensuring back-to-school success is a tall order for parents. Monitoring a child’s sleep, activity and nutrition, will be the “biggest influence” on kids.

Also, it’s not just enough “to tell your kids what to do, show them by being a role model,” she concluded.
