Witnesses Sought for Vandalism Incident Military police investigators here are asking for information relating to a vandalism incident that occurred between the hours of midnight and 1 a.m. May 26 in the Dutch Gap Court area of Harrison Village.

One vehicle sustained significant damage when a rock was thrown into its windshield. Two others were egged. Four males were seen in the area at the time of the incident, according to the military police.

Anyone with information is asked to call the MP desk at (804) 734-7400. Callers can remain anonymous. Furthermore, any post resident who suspects suspicious activity in the future, particularly in the Fort Lee housing areas, is encouraged to contact the MP desk immediately.

Parents and guardians on the installation also should be aware of (and adhere to) the juvenile curfew hours outlined in CASCOM Regulation 190-3, dated July 1, 2003. Anyone under the actual age of 18 must be inside their home between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., SundayThursday, and 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday. This is a year-round curfew – it does not change during summer vacation months.

The rule applies to all juveniles, regardless of their parent’s rank or military organization. Exceptions are limited to youths who are accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult, or emergency situations. This information can be found on Page 12 of the 2012 Fort Lee Post Guide and Telephone Directory.

Cases of juvenile misconduct involving dependents of U.S. military personnel stationed at Fort Lee are processed in accordance with CASCOM and Fort Lee Regulation 190-1, “Installation Juvenile Offenders Program” (available on the Forms and Publications page of www. lee.army.mil). That document states that

military sponsors are responsible for the proper care, supervision and conduct of juvenile family members.

“The commanding general, U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command and Fort Lee, as the installation commander, has inherent and regulatory authority to take those actions necessary to maintain morale, welfare and safety on Fort Lee,” the regulation also outlines. “That authority includes the power to restrict or deny on-post access and privileges to juveniles who commit misconduct on Fort Lee.” Military sponsors should be aware also that termination of their privilege to occupy government quarters could result from serious cases of juvenile misconduct, as noted in 190-1. Other, less-severe consequences include, but are not limited to, an extension of curfew hours, community service imposed on the juvenile offender, revocation of post driving privileges if the youth is old enough to have a learner’s permit or license, and/or referral to civilian authorities for criminal prosecution.

Lee Soldier Completes 100-Mile Road March

Holton Takes Command of 71st Trans Battalion

The Army Logistics University’s 71st Transportation Battalion hosted a change of command ceremony Friday in ALU’s multi-purpose room, where Lt. Col. Kevin M. Holton took charge of the organization from Lt. Col. Stephanie Gradford.

Col. Mark A. McCormick, ALU commandant, handed the guidon to Holton during the ceremony.

After the change of command, McCormick highlighted the efforts of Gradford as she helped establish the battalion within the university.

“We say goodbye to a great Family that has certainly left an impression on the Army Logistics University, as well as the Fort Lee community,” McCormick said of Gradford.

“She took command of the 71st just prior to the first anniversary of the formation of ALU,” he continued. “With that, she inherited some headaches that commanders of established units don’t usually face. She developed many processes and procedures from scratch. She served many bosses, was pulled in many directions and presented with very significant challenges.”

Gradford was the right person to lead the battalion during this period of growth, said McCormick.

“She most certainly had a hand in shaping all of our future logistics leaders, and for that, I thank her,” he said.

Taking time to thank her Family and those who helped her throughout her assignment, Gradford said that command was one of the most fulfilling and challenging experiences of her career.

“I’ve been blessed to work with outstanding Soldiers and leaders throughout the Army Logistics University and Fort Lee,” she said. “You all helped me accomplish my main goal, which is to take care of Soldiers and their Families and to make the organization better.”

McCormick also took time to welcome Holton into the fold.

“It’s truly an honor to welcome Lt. Col. Kevin Holton and his Family to the ALU team,” he said. “Kevin has some big shoes to fill, but I am sure he will do an outstanding job and help us continue to take ALU to the next level.”

Holton thanked McCormick for the confidence placed in him and said he’ll do his best at command. He also took time to thank his Family and future co-workers at ALU and Fort Lee. “To my new friends at Fort Lee, thank you for allowing me to be part of your team,” he said. “I look forward to serving and working with each and every one of you.”

Fort Lee will celebrate the Army’s 237th birthday June 14, with festivities at the north entrance to the Combined Arms Support Command in Mifflin Hall. Displays will open at 2 p.m. with the ceremony set to begin at 3 p.m.

The celebration, which is open to the public, includes music by the 392nd Army Band, a variety of Army displays, a Bronze Star presentation and a cakecutting ceremony featuring the oldest and youngest Soldiers on post.

KAHC ‘No Shows’

The American Red Cross and Kenner Army Health Clinic are teaming up to bring the Youth Volunteer Program back to KAHC this summer after a hiatus of about eight years.

Military and Department of Defense teens, age 14-17, may apply for the limited number of positions available

by June 15. Applications are available at the post Red Cross office, building 9028-A. Completed applications must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation. Volunteers must be available June 26 - July 27.

Kenner Army Health Clinic is asking patients to help reduce its “no show” rate. Patients who fail to show up or call to cancel appointments negatively affect the productivity of the health care provider teams, waste time and money and take an appointment away from someone who may need it, said KAHC officials.

A scheduled appointment can be canceled by calling 1-866-533-5242 at any time. Clients are asked to cancel appointments at least 24 hours in advance or as soon as they know they will not be able to keep an appointment.

When appointments are canceled, Kenner is able to move another Soldier, Family member or retiree into the time slots.

Clients are asked to “like” KAHC on Facebook and post their solutions for eliminating “no shows” to help the facility find proactive ways to solve this challenge.

Rock Band, Justin Moore Headline 4th at the Fort Country singer-songwriter Justin Moore will headline this year’s Fourth at the Fort celebration at Williams Stadium. The July 4 event also will include a performance by the Full On rock group from the 392nd Army Band, a KidZone play area and fireworks.

The festivities begin at 2 p.m. Admission is free and open to the general public. A limited number of VIP seating tickets are being sold by the event sponsors – USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia and Whisper Entertainment.

Fans of kick-butt, devil-may-care, Hank William’sstyle country music will surely appreciate the evening’s main attraction. Moore is described by promoters as a “fierce, old-school country star” who leans toward a southern rock sound that’s slightly reminiscent of Lynryd Skynyrd or, perhaps, the more current pop-country group Rascal Flatts.

Moore scored a No. 1 spot on the 2010 country music charts with his down-home anthem “Small Town USA” – a tribute to Poyen, Ark., population 272, where he grew up. More than a half million fans have downloaded the hit since its release in late 2009. The song also appeared on the 29-year-old’s first album (self-titled), which climbed to “Billboard” magazine’s top 10 and was later selected as a “Best Album of 2009” by the “New York Times.”

Country Artist of 2009. He received the Nationwide On Your Side prize for emerging artists during the 2010 CMT Music Awards. He was also selected for “Music Row” magazine’s Breakthrough Artist of 2010.

The evening’s second headline act, Full On, is one of the most requested ensembles from the Army Band at Fort Lee. With a set list that includes classic and contemporary selections (translation: lots of wailing guitar riffs, pounding drum solos and familiar, sing-along vocals), the group is sure to get the afternoon rocking with entertainment for young and old.

Another popular Fourth at the Fort activity is the KidZone, a youth area that offers inflatable rides, a rock

wall, a paintball challenge and a human gyro ride. Tickets (on sale for $1 each) will be required for all KidZone attractions.

A spectacular fireworks show, starting at approximately 9:35 p.m., will conclude the event. This year’s pyrotechnics display is provided by the American Fireworks Co. Those planning to participate in the Fort Lee festivities are reminded that pyrotechnics, glass bottles and pets are not permitted during the event. Guests may bring coolers that are no larger than 6 x 6 x 12 inches. Food and beverages will be sold on site.

Fort Lee visitors without a Department of Defense decal on their vehicle should be prepared to show their driver’s license, proof of insurance and a current vehicle registration if requested by security personnel at the gates.

All vehicle occupants 18 years of age or older must show a state or government-issued picture ID to gain access to the installation.

Motorists, passersby and fans gave through Kelly’s website and tossed currency and coins into plastic buckets on hand at the Post Field House and brandished by support personnel at busy intersections along the march route. In the end, he raised more than $15,000 for the American Cancer Society.

“Everyone did their part to support the cause,” said 244th QM Battalion Command Sgt. Maj. Clarence Richardson, who helped to oversee operations for the event. “All along the way, the support was there. People in the housing areas (along the march route) were asking if we needed anything and offering

their help. It’s great to see the community come together.”

The community came out in large numbers at the finish as well. Maj. Gen. James Hodge, Combined Arms Support Command and Fort Lee commanding general, and various other senior leaders were on hand to witness Kelly and Strickland hobble to the Post Field House around 7 p.m. The pair was subsequently joined by roughly 100 supporters as they paraded around the field house track for the last two miles to hip hop and rock anthems like “Eye of the Tiger” playing on the loudspeaker system.

As the sun slowly set, casting golden highlights on those gathered for the occasion, Kelly and Strickland crossed the finish line

and in ritualistic fashion, dropped their rucks in unison, saluted one another then embraced to applause and cheers.

On the podium, Kelly thanked Strickland, his wife, Cori, the chain of command and everyone for their support in raising funds and awareness. Brigade Quartermaster, a Post Exchange retailer, matched the donation amount, helping the effort to surpass its initial goal by $10,000.

Kelly was diagnosed with a rare cancer in 2010. He has since undergone chemotherapy and other treatments. While his cancer is currently in remission, Kelly sought to use his fortune to help others and make a statement about resilience.

The Theater Company at Fort Lee has awarded the 2012 Megan L. Stoker Memorial Scholarship to Sarah Elizabeth Erway of Richmond and Christian Michael Mincks of Colonial Heights.

“Both recipients of these scholarships have grown up at the Lee Playhouse,” said Ann C. Easterling, Board of Directors president. “Sarah and Christian have made significant contributions to the theater over the years, and the board was very impressed by their many activities in their schools and communities.”

Music and dance have always been part of Sarah’s life.

In fact, she “grew up in the pit” where her parents Jeffrey and Alisa Erway played trumpet for many Lee Playhouse productions. Sarah has played piano, French horn, hand bells, sung in choirs, and she has held leadership positions in various church and school music departments. She has studied and performed with two dance groups and taught at River City Dance. She has been in many productions at the Lee Playhouse, most recently dancing in “The King and I.” Christian Mincks has performed in 20 KidKapers productions at the Lee Playhouse. His roles have included a “giant British chicken, a macho huntsman, a scheming wizard, a fairyland gangster, and a rapping cat in a world of toys!” He is one of eight children of Jeff and Kym Mincks and all children and both parents have been active on the stage and behind the scenes at the Lee Playhouse.

Christian will graduate from the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School for the Arts and Technology in June.

At ARGS, he was named International Thespian Society Outstanding Freshman and Outstanding Latin Student.

He received the English Secret Scholar Award and was part of the ARGS Best Improv Team in Virginia Theatre Association competitions. He is a member of the National Honor Society, International Thespian Society, Magic of Life Club (councilman) and the SKETCH Improv Comedy Team (captain). He also volunteers with the CARITAS Homeless Ministry.

The 2012 U.S. Army Soldier Show came to Fort Lee this week. About 925 advanced individual training Soldiers and Marines from the Ordnance School attended the Tuesday night performance at MacLaughlin Fitness Center.

Obama Details Military-to-Civilian Skills Certification Program American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama announced a new presidential initiative aimed at preparing service members for civilian employment Friday.

The president provided details about the militaryto-civilian certification program during his visit to a Honeywell International Inc. plant in Golden Valley, Minn. Defense contractor Honeywell reportedly has hired hundreds of military veterans at its plants and facilities since early 2011.

“Let me tell you something – if you can save a life on the battlefield, you can save a life in an ambulance. If you can oversee a convoy or millions of dollars of assets in Iraq, you can help manage a supply chain or balance its books here at home,” Obama said at the plant. “If you can maintain the most advanced weapons in the world, if you’re an electrician on a Navy ship, well, you can manufacture the next generation of advanced technology in our factories like this one. If you’re working on complex machinery, you should be able to take those skills and find a manufacturing job right here – right here at home.”

But unfortunately, Obama said, many returning veterans with such advanced skills “don’t get hired simply because they don’t have the civilian licenses or certifications that a lot of companies require.”

At the same time, the president noted, business leaders often say they can’t find enough workers with the skills necessary to fill open positions.

“Eighty percent of manufacturers say this, according to one survey,” Obama said. “So think about it – we got all these openings and all these skilled veterans looking for work, and somehow they’re missing each other.”

That doesn’t make sense, the president said, noting it’s time to fix it.

“Today, I’m proud to announce new partnerships between the military and manufacturing groups that will make it easier for companies to hire returning service members who prove they’ve earned the skills our country needs,” Obama said. “Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, Coast Guardsmen – if they’ve got skills in machining or welding or weapons maintenance, for example, you’ll have a faster track to good-paying manufacturing jobs.”

“Service members with experience in logistics or maintenance on the front lines” will “have a faster track to jobs in those fields here at home,” he added.

The initiative will enable up to 126,000 service members to obtain civilian credentials and certifications in a number of high-demand industries, officials said.

“I applaud President Obama’s initiative to help thousands of service members obtain industry-recognized certifications for the trade skills they have learned and worked hard to master while in uniform,” Defense Secretary Leon

E. Panetta said in a prepared statement.

The Defense Department has created a military credentialing and licensing task force as part of the initiative, officials said. It developed partnerships with major manufacturing credentialing agencies to expand certifications to active duty military personnel in the fields of engineering, logistics, maintenance and welding.

“Supported by the efforts of the Defense Department’s military credentialing and licensing task force, these certifications will give our returning troops a leg up in a competitive job market, and they will make it easier for veterans to transition to civilian life,” Panetta said.

Service members can earn these credentials free of charge. The services will also explore how credentialing opportunities can be integrated into existing military training programs and expanded to include everyone with relevant skills and training, the officials said.

The initiative was developed in response to a report on veterans’ employment by the President’s Council of Economic Advisers and the National Economic Council.

The report, “Military Skills for America’s Future: Leveraging Military Service and Experience to Put Veterans and Military Spouses Back to Work,” describes the difficulties faced by veterans and military spouses in transitioning their military experience to civilian employment.

Three such partnerships will begin this summer, the officials said.

The first, a partnership between the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council and the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps, will involve a pilot program for a limited number of service members. They will be eligible to “achieve industry-recognized credentials that can support a transition from military service to frontline jobs in the growing fields of advanced manufacturing and logistics,” according to a statement issued by the White House.

The second partnership – among the Army, the American Welding Society and the National Institute for Metalworking Skills – will provide unlimited certification testing at the U.S. Army Ordnance School at Fort Lee, for Soldiers in certain machinist and welding specialties.

The school trains about 20,000 service members each year to develop, produce and maintain weapons. Service members who acquire these specialties will automatically receive the equivalent civilian credentials.

The third partnership, between the Army and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, will expand certification opportunities for officers and warrant officers at the Army’s Engineer School at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. The school will conduct a one-year pilot program for students to qualify as Certified Manufacturing Technologists and earn Lean Bronze Certification – industry-standard manufacturing engineering certifications.

Heat Injuries: Recognize, Prevent Them

Nearly 700 people die each year due to heat-related illness, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With military personnel and their Families working out in the upcoming summer months, it is important that everyone is well educated on preventing heat injuries.

There are three major categories of heat injuries â&#x20AC;&#x201C; heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how to recognize the symptoms of each and directions for what to do if someone you know is suffering from a heat injury.

Heat Cramps Heat cramps are painful, involuntary and brief muscle spasms that happen during exercise or when one is working in a hot environment. They usually occur on the calves, thighs, abs or shoulders. The exact cause of heat cramps is still unknown, but researchers believe it is related to electrolyte (i.e., sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium) deficiencies. Heat cramps are most likely to happen if a person is new to working in a hot environment or if a person sweats a lot during exercise and did not rehydrate with water or a sports drink.

Other people who are at risk for heat cramps are infants, young children, the elderly and people living without air conditioning. It is also important to note that some medications can affect the way the body sweats and regulates heat. Examples of these types of medicines are tranquilizers, over-the-counter cold medicine, psychiatric drugs and antihistamines. To treat heat cramps, a person should stop the activity and hydrate with fluids.

Seek medical attention if symptoms do not go away or if the person is vomiting, feels dizzy, has shortness of breath or a fever. Out of the three types of injury, heat cramps are the least severe.

Heat Exhaustion Heat exhaustion is very similar in that it happens when a person works or exercises in a hot environment. The person becomes dehydrated and the body overheats. The body tries to cool itself by sweating, but in the process it loses fluid and salts. When the person does not drink enough to replace this loss of fluids, circulation can be affected and may even result in a mild form of shock. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include pale, moist skin, sore muscles, dizziness, weakness and nausea. Treatment for heat exhaustion calls for stopping the activity, replenishing with fluids and going to a shaded area to help cool off.

Heat Stroke The last type of heat injury is a heat stroke. Overall, the body regulates its temperature in the brain. When a person suffers from a heat stroke, the personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cooling system in the brain stops functioning. After this, the personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s temperature will rise and will cause brain damage or damage to other organs. A heat stroke is a medical emergency.

The most important step in preventing heat stroke is to prepare the body beforehand by drinking enough fluids, taking breaks or even abstaining from physical activity in hot weather altogether. The people most at risk for heat strokes are athletes, infants, the elderly and people who work outdoors. There is a wide range of symptoms for a heat stroke; they include respiratory problems, flushed or red skin, strange behavior and a rapid pulse. If a person appears to be suffering from a heat stroke, immediately call 911, move the person to a shaded area, remove clothing and apply water or ice packs to the body. Also try to get the person to drink water if they are able to.

With the summer months at hand, it is very important to protect and help one another prevent heat injuries. Avoid exercising or working in hot conditions if possible, drink plenty of fluids, and educate one another on how to recognize and treat symptoms of a heat injury.

It is important to ensure the safety of your loved ones, especially your children.

While all parents want to keep their children healthy and safe, the truth is that the home can be a very dangerous place if parents do not take the right actions to prevent childhood poisoning. Every day, 374 children in the United States are treated in an emergency department and two children die from poisoning. For every 10 poison exposures in children, about nine occur in the home.

Poisons can be found in almost every room of every house and curious children will often investigate anything that is within their reach â&#x20AC;&#x201D; little hands can lead to big trouble. However, with the right knowledge and information, parents have the ability to play a life-saving role in protecting their children from household poisonings. The first step is to realize what items in your home can be poisonous.

WASHINGTON – The convergence of crime, terrorism and insurgency and its threat to U.S. national security is a growing concern for the Defense Department, whose role in the fight began two decades ago and continues to evolve, a senior defense official said Friday.

William F. Wechsler, deputy assistant secretary of defense for counter-narcotics and global threats, spoke during an irregular warfare summit sponsored by the Institute for Defense and Government Advancement.

“The Department of Defense’s role in this effort goes back … to the 1980s,” Wechsler said, when America was flooded with vast amounts of cocaine coming from Colombia and across the Caribbean into Florida.

“This was a direct invasion of our sovereignty, of … our borders. And before the Department of Defense was asked to [intervene], this issue was only getting worse,” he added.

At the time, 75 percent of all the cocaine that came into the country came directly into Florida in small boats and planes, and law enforcement could do little to prevent it, Wechsler said.

Today, less than 1 percent of the nation’s illegal drugs are arriving through Florida, he said.

Part of the solution involved establishing the Interagency Task Force South, part of U.S. Southern Command, based at Naval Air Station Key West in Florida to conduct counter-drug trafficking operations and to link intelligence and operations.

“As part of that process, we learned a great deal that has helped us in the current war in Afghanistan, for instance,” Wechsler said.

Since that time, he added, the problems of transnational organized crime have changed radically, driven by globalization. They operate on a worldwide scale with diversified commodities for trafficking and have changed from top-down hierarchies to network-based organizations.

“There are also a lot of new methods for doing business,” Wechsler said. “Information technology, penetration of illicit markets, infiltrating companies and capturing governments have really put (transnational crime) in a different zone than it was 15 years ago.”

In 2011, President Barack Obama issued his strategy to combat transnational organized crime. “Most importantly for the Department of Defense it declares that transnational organized crime is a national security threat,” Wechsler added.

The strategy, he said, also made note of the complex and, in some places, opaque relationships developed among criminal organizations, terrorist groups and insurgent movements.

This means that more terrorist organizations are using criminal mechanisms to support themselves, Wechsler

said, and more criminal organizations are using the tactics of terrorist organizations.

“The guys in Mexico didn’t come up by themselves with the idea of beheading someone, videotaping it and posting it on the Internet,” Wechsler said. “They watched terrorist organizations do this and thought, ‘What a great idea. We can apply this for our own purposes.’”

In the globalized world, he said, such ideas move rapidly from one group to another, even if there’s no contact between them.

Connections can now be seen between previously unrelated criminal and terrorist organizations. An example of this, Wechsler said, is last year’s alleged attempt by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force to use members of Los Zetas, Mexico’s violent criminal syndicate, to assassinate the Saudi ambassador in Washington.

Wechsler said James Clapper, director of National Intelligence, recently testified that “terrorists and insurgents will increasingly turn to crime and criminal networks for funding and logistics, in part because of U.S. and western success in attacking other sources of their funding.

Criminal connections and activities of Hezbollah and alQaida in the Islamic Maghreb illustrate this trend.”

With the exception of Afghanistan, Wechsler said, DoD’s role in fighting this escalating threat is nearly always in support of law enforcement or partner countries.

In Afghanistan, he added, where there is a blending of crime, terrorism and insurgency on the battlefield, “we’ve really come a great long way on this.”

Wechsler said such work has required military operations, special operations and integration with law enforcement, along with host country initiatives, and with the State and Justice departments.

“If one assumes we’re going to confront these kinds of adversaries, or other countries that we’re going to support are going to confront these adversaries, it’s a model for our military planning in the years to come,” he said.

Another Defense Department success, he said, is its support of Colombia’s decade-long fight against the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarios de Colombia, or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, called the FARC. “Colombia was in really dire straits (in the 1990s),” Wechsler said. “The war isn’t over but the bottom line is that the FARC is a shadow of what it was and Colombia has taken back tremendous amounts of territory.”

That country, he added, “has gone from being an exporter of insecurity throughout the region to being an exporter of security and a great partner for many of its neighbors on the lessons it’s learned and in capacity building around the world.”

Today, the Defense Department is learning from these successes, “whether we support law enforcement, whether we support a host nation or whether we are directly involved in the fight ourselves,” Wechsler said.

59th Ordnance Brigade Commander’s Cup Units Battle for Coveted Trophy, Bragging Rights

To hear post exchange operations manager Trish Jones tell it, there couldn’t have been a better response to a shopper in trouble than that which occurred May 19 at the store.

“Their reaction time to the customer was awesome,” she said. “Their response was professional.”

But Jones wasn’t referring to an employee responding to the needs of a patron. She was recalling the feats of three advanced individual training Soldiers who took decisive actions when an elderly man suffered an apparent heart attack.

“They jumped right in as if they’ve been doing it all their lives, and they’re very young girls so it was pretty amazing,” Jones continued.

The young warriors – 24-year-old Pvt. Shelli Cramer, 19-year old Pvt. Tania Gonzago and 25-year-old Pfc. Laura Lapre of Charlie Company, 262nd Quartermaster Battalion, 23rd QM Brigade – were on pass and went to the Exchange to shop around the noon hour. That’s when Cramer noticed a man, accompanied by a woman presumed to be his wife, was drooling from the mouth. Something didn’t seem right, she said.

“As soon as I had that thought process, I saw him fall

onto his right side,” said Cramer. “It took me a second to kind of realize what was going on.”

Both Cramer and Gonzaga, who also saw the man collapse, yelled for their battle buddy, Lapre, who they both know as a certified emergency medical technician.

“She came over and tended to him medically while we went and got the manager and called 911,” said Cramer.

Lapre noticed the man trembled a bit and began vomiting. She immediately took action to protect him from further injury.

“When somebody is throwing up, you need to prop him up a little bit, otherwise they could choke on their own vomit,” she said. “So, I got on my knees and knelt behind him.”

Lapre said the man stopped vomiting for a few moments but resumed. So she turned him over once more to ease the process. During the procedure, she took note of something else.

“He was very, very clammy – so he was hot,” said Lapre.

“I asked him if he was hot, and he responded that he was, so I helped him take his jacket off. It was a very, very warm jacket that he had on, and the wife had mentioned to Pvt. Cramer that he was always usually cold, but he was too hot (at that particular moment).”

The man eventually became more conscious and even

began talking and joking around, said Lapre. Soon after, medical personnel from an ambulance unit arrived and took over.

“They came in with a stretcher and Pfc. Lapre had already taken some vitals and asked him all the right questions,” said Gonzaga. “She already knew what to tell them.”

In the meantime, Gonzaga said she acted as an intermediary with the man’s seemingly distraught wife, consoling her and relaying information received from medical personnel. The unidentified man was taken to a hospital. The warriors said they were told that he is doing well but his medical status is unknown.

In hindsight, the women said they were glad to help.

Cramer in particular said it was an honor to aid a veteran.

“It was ironic to help someone at this early point in our careers,” she said. “Maybe it was the training or maybe it was just being more confident to be able to take charge.

I’m not sure I would’ve been able to do that before I went to basic (training).”

Jones, who has worked at the Exchange for five years, said she has grown accustomed to seeing behaviors among AIT students typical of youth, but she said Cramer, Gonzaga and Lapre acted beyond their years.

“They were very responsive,” she said. “I can’t imagine an older adult doing it any better than they did.”

Sleep is often thought of as a luxury that falls by the wayside when we are busy and stressed. However, getting enough sleep is one of the most important things you can do to be Army Strong. Sleep is a necessity to sustain your performance â&#x20AC;&#x201C; just like food, water and air.

The effects of sleep deprivation can sneak up on you and cause a serious decrease in your ability to stay sharp during training, while on duty and on the battlefield. Some common consequences of sleep deprivation include decreased performance and concentration, increased stress, slow reaction times, confusion, memory lapses and poor judgment. Inadequate sleep is also linked with increased risk of motor vehicle accidents, increased risk of diabetes and heart problems, and increased risk for psychiatric conditions including depression and substance abuse.

In other words, without enough sleep, you put both yourself and your fellow Soldiers at risk.

For optimal performance, most Soldiers need seven to eight hours of sleep every 24 hours, and it is best if this sleep is not interrupted. However, as a Soldier, you might not be able to have seven hours of continuous sleeping time each day. In such cases, shorter sleep periods that add up to between seven and eight hours for each 24-hour period can also sustain alertness and performance.

Getting quality sleep depends on many factors, including your stress levels, the surrounding physical environment and what you eat, drink and do close to bedtime.

Sleep experts recommend the following tips: 1. Stick to a sleep schedule. As much as possible, go to bed and wake up at the same time each day.

2. Establish a relaxing routine before bed. Give yourself time to unwind. A relaxing routine might include reading or listening to soothing music and lowering the lights.

3. Have a dark, quiet, comfortable and cool sleeping environment. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sleep in areas where there is regular activity. If needed, minimize exposure to noise and

light by using ear plugs, blackout shades or a sleep mask.

4. Avoid large meals and beverages right before bedtime. A light snack is OK, but avoid large meals and too many fluids two to three hours prior to bedtime. A large meal can cause indigestion that interferes with sleep. Drinking too many fluids at night can cause you to awaken to urinate.

5. Avoid caffeine and nicotine. Coffee, colas, certain teas and chocolate contain caffeine, and its effects can last for eight hours. Nicotine is also a stimulant and can cause smokers to sleep only very lightly.

6. Avoid alcoholic drinks before bed.

While many people think a drink or two will help them fall asleep, alcohol actually prevents you from falling into a deep sleep.

7. Avoid medicines that delay or disrupt your sleep. Some medications, such as heart, blood pressure or asthma medications, and over-the-counter and herbal remedies for coughs, colds or allergies can disrupt sleep patterns. If you are having trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor to see if any medications you are taking might be affecting your sleep.

8. Exercise is great, but not before bed.

Avoid exercising within a few hours before going to bed. Exercise makes us more alert and raises body temperature, which makes it harder to fall asleep. So, finish your exercise at least three hours before bedtime.

9. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t lie in bed awake. If you find yourself still awake after lying in bed for more than 20 minutes, get up and do something relaxing (like reading or listening to music) until you feel sleepy. Often the anxiety of not being able to sleep can make it harder to fall asleep.

10. Talk to your doctor if you continue to have trouble sleeping. If you continue to find yourself feeling tired and not alert, talk to your doctor. An underlying health problem might be affecting your sleep.

First Dodgeball Season Gets Good Start

f your thoughts of dodgeball bring to mind the old-school, playground variety played with any ball readily available, then maybe you should visit the local fitness center to get a dose of the 21st century upgrade.

The newer version of the schoolyard favorite was on full display at the Clark Fitness Center May 30 when two teams battled for the inaugural Advanced Individual Training Dodgeball Tournament crown.

Anthony Nelson, a recreation specialist with the installation Sports Office, said there is a renewed interest in dodgeball, albeit it in a more competitive form, so his office offered it up as an intramural activity. It was initially rejected on the grounds that some didn’t see it on the same level as the traditional favorites of softball, basketball or football.
