Earth, Safety Day More than 50 exhibitors will be on hand for the combined Fort Lee Earth and Safety Day at the Field House on April 26, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. The event is open to the public, including local school children. May 1 is the rain date.

Among the exhibitors will be the Wildlife Center of Virginia with a show featuring live rescued animals. Safety training will include distracted driving prevention, automated external defibrillator demonstrations and fire safety training. KAHC ‘No Shows’ Kenner Army Health Clinic is working to decrease its number of “no shows” or people who fail to show up for or cancel an appointment. A scheduled appointment can be canceled by calling 1-866-533-5242 at any time.

Clients are asked to cancel appointments at least 24 hours in advance or as soon as they know they will not be able to keep an appointment.

When appointments are canceled, Kenner is able to move others into the time slots.

“No shows” reduce the productivity of the health care provider teams. They waste time and money and take appointments away from people who need them, according to KAHC officials.

Clients are asked to “like” KAHC on Facebook and post their solutions for eliminating “no shows.”

‘ROC Drill’ Explores Army Transportation’s Future

A strategy session here this week will help shape the future of Army transportation or, more specifically, the Joint Logistics Over The Shore operations that supplement the U.S. military’s ability to move thousands of personnel and many tons of equipment by sea.

The assembled strategists include representatives of the Army G-4, Forces Command, the Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, the Sustainment Battle Lab for CASCOM, a British Army liaison and others. They will analyze a variety of combat and peacekeeping deployment scenarios and suggest better ways of doing business in support of joint operations in the 21st century.

“We are not here to make final decisions but rather, through serious thinking and professional discussion, inform the future decision-makers,” read one of the guiding principles of the ROC (Rehearsal of Concept) Drill that’s being conducted in the SCoE Battle Lab building near the Army Logistics University.

“Two teams will analyze each scenario, and we anticipate different ideas and answers from each group,” explained Col. Garry McClendon, director of the Sustainment Battle Lab here. “That’s the nature of this sort of event – different approaches to the same challenges. It gives us a chance to look at a situation from different angles and areas of expertise, all of which will help shape a future course of action.”

The ROC Drill is an opportunity to consider a variety of “influencing factors” as well, like military budget constraints, organizational and command relationships, limitations to current equipment, required training and enemy anti-access operations, McClendon noted.

“It’s challenging and exciting at the same time,” he said. “We’re talking about the future of over-the-shore operations, one of the most dynamic aspects of our business.”

U.S. Army Chief of Transportation Brig. Gen. Stephen E. Farmen shed further light on the importance of the ROC Drill during his welcoming remarks Monday. He said the Army is favoring the idea of creating a new brigade that specializes in “intermodal operations” like JLOTS. “That’s the good news because we really need this brigade (for the Army of 2020),” Farmen said. “What I’m really asking all of you to do is to have some great dialogue, some tough dialogue, so we can gather a lot of ideas and the facts we need to put together (a recommendation) for the Army’s senior leaders.”

Farmen also emphasized the importance of transitioning the Army for 21st century operations. “I don’t think anyone would disagree that the world is vastly different than it was 10 or even five years ago. War Memorial 5k Honors Fallen Troops Runners and walkers young and old are invited to participate in the Virginia War Memorial 5K Run-Walk to Remember on April 14 in Richmond.

Registration is under way for this inaugural event that begins at 8 a.m. The War Memorial is located at 621 S. Belvidere St., just north of the Lee Bridge. The event route includes the historic downtown Richmond area and the picturesque James River Canal Walk.

“The purpose of the 5K Run-Walk is to honor and remember the sacrifices of those who have served and are currently serving in the U.S. military,” said Candice Shelton, Virginia War Memorial education director and organizer of the event.

“It is truly an opportunity for everyone to show appreciation to those who protect the freedoms all of us hold dear.”

Portions of the race route will be lined with memorial flags that bear the names of service men and women who were killed in action or deceased veterans, Shelton noted.

“These flags are available for purchase for only $10 each by anyone – whether or not they participate in the race.”

The $25 pre-registration fee for the memorial run-walk includes a commemorative T-shirt from the event. Same day registration is $30. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers. Representatives from the Richmond Road Runners Club will be on hand to assist with the logistics of the event.

Participants may register and purchase memorial flags online at www.vawarmemorial.org. Registration forms also can be downloaded, filled out and mailed with a check payable to VWM Educational Foundation. Dedicated in 1956, the memorial was originally designed to honor those Virginians who sacrificed their lives in battle during World War II and the Korean War. Fort Lee Teen Organizes Charity Run

Fourteen-year-old Sadie Sandifer has already distinguished herself as one of the top youth long-distance runners in the state. During the recent Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach, she placed first in her age division and shaved more than a minute off her 2011 finish time (also a first-place showing).

The Fort Lee Family member is setting records as a member of the Matoaca Middle School cross country team as well. She has nurtured a competitive spirit for more than half of her life, and she runs competitively whenever and wherever she can.

Today, Sadie is focusing her attention on another aspect of the sport ‌ fundraising. “I started thinking about the money that it costs to compete in the races that I’ve run,â€? she said. “So, I asked my mom (Tammy Sandifer) where it all goes, and she said a lot of it went to charities.â€?

That motivated Sadie to organize a 5K run of her own,

with the proceeds benefitting the Wounded Warriors Program and the Richmond Fisher House – a “home away from home� for the Families of veterans receiving care at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center. If running can make a difference, Sadie said, she wants to be a part of it. “As soon as I mentioned the charity thing, you could see her mind working,� Tammy said. “When she said we should organize a run to benefit wounded warriors, I wasn’t really that surprised. It’s just a reflection of her competitive and caring spirit.�

Sadie and her mom teamed up with their neighborhood homeowners’ association to organize the inaugural Chesdin Landing 5K for Charities that will take place May 12, 9 -11 a.m., at Lake Chesdin in Chesterfield County. Much of the race route follows the shores of the lake and the organizers describe it as “picturesque and peaceful.�

While discussing the charitable organizations that will benefit from the race, Sadie said, “I immediately thought about raising money to help my dad help

Toby Sandifer was a physician’s assistant at Kenner’s Active Duty Clinic before moving to a new assignment but keeping his family settled in Chesterfield. “I also chose to help wounded warriors because my dad deployed as a medic and helped save lives on the battlefield,� she said. “The proceeds from the race will go to the Richmond Fisher House to make the lives of those injured and their Families a little easier as they heal.�

Both Sadie and her mom are hoping for a great turnout at the race. Helping others while enjoying the physical and mental benefits of distance running is a passion that many runners share, and this particular event is an example of the military family helping its own.

Sports Zone Set for Renovations

The Fort Lee Sports Zone will undergo renovations to its HVAC system, starting April 4.

The facility – operated by FMWR – will be under construction through early July.

The current HVAC system is old and not functioning at the correct levels, said Alyssa Hornby, FMWR program manager. “The current system causes discomfort for our patrons,� she said. “The renovation will help patrons by giving them a comfortable environment to socialize in during all four seasons of the year, and this will be a great place to watch that favorite sports team, play pool or just hang out with friends.�

Currently, the exact completion date has not been determined, but information will be released once that date is known, said Hornby.

The Leisure Travel Services that also shares the building with the Sports Zone will be temporarily relocated to the administrative offices of MacLaughlin Fitness Center in building 4320 on C Avenue.

For patrons who are looking for another place similar to the Sports Zone, Hornby suggests they visit the Overtime Sports Bar or the HideAway until the renovations are complete.

ACS Event Honors Volunteer ‘Army’ More than 120 Fort Lee community members were honored at a Presidential Volunteer Service Awards ceremony March 15 in Challen Hall. Of those individuals, 13 received lifetime awards for more than 4,000 hours of service each.

“The number of hours contributed by this volunteer workforce over the past year is valued at more than $3 million,” noted Brig. Gen. Gwen Bingham, Quartermaster General, who gave remarks and presented the awards at the ceremony. “This is clearly a substantial savings for Fort Lee. It’s tremendous, and these volunteers deserve our gratitude and respect.”

According to Susan Loden, the volunteer coordinator here, more than 600 individuals were actually eligible for presidential awards this year. Not all of them could make it to the ceremony, and many prefer to stay out of the limelight, opting instead to serve quietly in the background.

“I just want them to know they’re appreciated, even if they couldn’t make it to the March 15 event,” Loden said. “And the community will have another opportunity to show its gratitude during the April 19 Volunteer Appreciation Reception at the Lee Club.”

our 23rd Quartermaster Brigade Soldiers have earned the right to be called Best Warrior.

Sgt. 1st Class William Slaght, Spc. Michael Egarton, Staff Sgt. Gabriel Martinez and Staff Sgt. Mark Wirtz were so named at an awards ceremony Friday that capped five days of competition.

Command Sgt. Maj. Charles Penn, brigade command sergeant major, said this year’s competition speaks for itself.

“All of the competitors were ready to compete, and the battalions sent up their best,” he said.

The 23rd QM Bde.’s Best Warrior Competition is a consolidated event that includes battalion representatives for the Noncommissioned Officer and Soldier of the Year contests as well as the Advanced Individual

Training Platoon Sergeant of the Year and Instructor of the Year awards.

Staff Sgt. Mark Wirtz, named NCO of the Year, said he was a bit surprised by the event’s difficulty and level of competitiveness.

“It’s definitely tougher than I thought,” he said. “You have to be physically and mentally tough to participate in this event.”

Wirtz and his fellow contestants were challenged by several events to include weapons qualification, the Army Physical Fitness Test, a board appearance and a 6-mile road march. The latter was considered by many of the contestants to be the toughest on the schedule.

“I had to really dig deep, to push myself to the limits to finish first,” said Wirtz of the event that required carrying a 30-pound load. “I didn’t quite get there, but I gave first place a run for the money.”

The Mystery Event was another of the events in which contestants had to “dig deep.” Traditionally held on the last day of competition, it is purposely kept secret to competitors until minutes prior to the event. This year,

the competittors assembled in a classroom, lined up in front of a proojection screen and followed a commercial abdominal w workout program called P90X. “The P90X X is designed to test your intestinal fortitude,” said M Master Sgt. Evan Umstead, Best Warrior coordinator. “E Every other event that we had, one could say, ‘I’m competiing against someone else.’ With the P90X, you’re competing against yourself.”

“The evennts were designed to be even-keeled across the board,” said Umstead, “so regardless of what the level of fitness was, or your knowledge base, if you were prepared, youu were bound to do well.”

A total off eight Soldiers participated in this year’s event: three for the instructor contest, two each for NCO and AIT Platooon Sergeant of the Year and one for Soldier of the Year.

Edgarton, Slaght and Martinez earned honors as Soldier, AIT Platoon Sergeant and Instructor of the Year, respectively.

Edgarton, the lone Soldier of the Year contestant, said he relied on self-motivation to perform his best in the absence of competitors.

“I tried to go out and do better than what I thought I could,” he said. “I think I can do better. There’s always room for improvement.”

Umstead said all the competitors deserve kudos for competing, especially considering that many of them were splitting training time and their regular duties as instructors and platoon sergeants.

“All of the participants were hard charging,” said the 23rd QM Brigade S3 NCO in charge. “They came and gave us 100 percent. You could tell that they wanted to do well and represent their units well.”

All of the winners will advance to the Combined Arms Support Command level of the event scheduled in a few weeks. Those who earn a CASCOM title will move on to

the Training and Doctrine Command competition.

TRADOC is the endpoint for the both the AIT Platoon Sergeant and Instructor of the Year competitors. Those who capture the NCO and Soldier of the Year categories will move on to the Army level of the Best Warrior Competition scheduled for October at Fort Lee.

The disciples e[press their astonishment that there is a traitor in their midst. The disciples then in turn come out of their poses to give brief soliloquies, at times using scripture references, of how they came to know their Lord and what he means to them. Each disciple ends his soliloquy by asking himself if he is the one to betray Jesus. Music is interspersed throughout the performance to give it emotional impact, said White.

The chapel has been performing the “Living Last Supper” for more than 15 years. The actors are not professionals but men of the chapel who devote many hours practicing and learning their lines so that the performance can be a truly memorable and spiritual e[perience for all who see it.

KENNER CONNECTION Automation Aims to Ease Pharmacy Wait Time

The Kenner Army Health Clinic Pharmacy handles two to three times more traffic than any local retail pharmacy, filling a minimum of 1,100 to 1,400 prescriptions and seeing more than 420 beneficiaries a day, according to its chief. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When you mix the high volume of patients and the increased number of medical beneficiaries on the installation with old technology, waiting times for medication fills have dramatically increased,â&#x20AC;? said KAHC Commander Col. Joseph S. Pina. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To help manage wait times, Kenner has implemented the QÂŽ Flow Patient Queuing System, which is one way we hope to improve patient flow and to make wait times shorter,â&#x20AC;? said Pina.

At the pharmacy, Kenner clients will notice the new user-friendly kiosk that will allow Kenner to improve the services to patients. The pharmacy is open 6 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Active duty personnel have priority at all times, but the pharmacy staff recommends they pick up medications between 6-10 a.m. if possible.

Installation Assesses Tornado Response Exercise On Tuesday, March 20, Fort Lee conducted an installation-wide tornado drill in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management state-wide tornado drill. The drill provided the opportunity to validate tenant emergency action plans and installation emergency warning capabilities. The following paragraphs provide clarity on several key issues identified during the drill.

Tornado Watch: The significance of the Tornado Watch cannot be overstated. Emergency action plans need to include specific tasks for tornado watch conditions.

Comprehensive dissemination of the tornado watch is critical to ensure all personnel are aware of the weather conditions and are prepared to respond if a tornado warning is issued.

Sirens and Giant Voice: The sirens and Giant Voice are designed to warn personnel outside, not inside buildings. Emergency Action Plans should include procedures to monitor weather con-

ditions when any type of severe weather watch or warning is issued (e.g. communication with the installation operation center, internet, radio, television, etc.)

Computer Notifications: The installation operation center uses a command information distribution list to send emergency messages to key leaders on the installation. The ability to provide mass-email and computer pop-up notifications to all computer users on Fort Lee is being looked into.

Interior Voice: Facility managers of buildings equipped with the Interior Voice emergency warning and notification system need to be familiar with the system to maintain it. A more extensive Interior Voice training program for facility managers is being developed and is expected to begin within a couple of months.

WebEOC: Fort Lee’s WebEOC is a web-based common operational picture system used to maintain situational awareness and facilitate faster decision making during

emergency situations. The installation operation center can assist tenants in establishing accounts and provide operator training.

It is important to remember that exercises like the tornado drill assist the Fort Lee community in gathering

objective assessments of installation’s capabilities so that gaps, deficiencies, and vulnerabilities are addressed prior to a real incident. Also, members of the Fort Lee community must embrace their responsibility to be prepared – in doing so, they con-

tribute to the safety and security of the installation as well.

Icon Contest The Fort Lee Environmental Management Office is looking for a creative smart phone application icon for the Installation Environmental Guidebook that explains available environmental resources. The prize is a new Kindle.

The competition is open to military, civilians and contractors who work at Fort Lee. The design must be 512 by 512 pixels in jpg or png format.
