CG offers Thanksgiving wishes, safety reminder The Thanksgiving holiday tradition is historically observed as a time to celebrate and give thanks for a good harvest in preparation for the upcoming winter months.

The holiday is a time to be together with family and friends and to open our homes to those who may be away

from their loved ones.

While celebrating, however, we must not become complacent regarding the hazards surrounding us.

Excessive alcohol consumption, road safety and the approaching winter conditions continue to be areas of concern. Engaged leadership at

all levels makes a difference.

We must take care of each other and remain vigilant.

Personally owned vehicle inspections are particularly important as this is the beginning of peak travel season.

This also is the beginning of block leave. For many Soldiers, this is the first time

Now I lay me down to pray, that I’ll survive Thanksgiving Day. That the special dinner I agreed to host, won’t make me a laughing stock on post.

That as the day gets on I’ll keep my sanity, and have no outbursts of profanity.

That our turkey, overnight, will thoroughly thaw, so that stuffing the bird won’t require a hacksaw.

That the kids will get along, maybe even play a game, instead of bellyaching that the Macy’s Day Parade is “so lame.”

That my husband will assist when the moment is opportune, and not disappear with shipmates to drink beer before noon.

That base neighbors will play football so the guys feel athletic, but no one will get tackled and require a paramedic.

That the turkey will fry to a nice golden brown, without a conflagration that burns the base down.

That the beans will steam, the potatoes will boil, and the gravy won’t resemble a batch of crude oil.

That our friends won’t mind if the cranberries are canned, and when the smoke detector goes off, they’ll all understand.

That everyone will gather at our table without haste, before the mashed potatoes become wallpaper paste.

That the kids will remember to put napkins on laps, chew with mouths closed and not feed the dog scraps.

New Air Force expeditionary kitchen installed at Fort Lee Amy Perry Production/News Assistant Editor

The Air Force Services Academy has begun installing a new expeditionary kitchen at its field training area.

On Friday, instructors and students from the Services course, along with engineers from the Combat Feeding Directorate at the Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center in Massachusetts, put together the tent that will shelter the new Basic Expeditionary Airfield Resources kitchen type 2. The rest of the equipment is set to arrive within the next few weeks.

The new kitchen replaces the Air Force’s Containerized Deployment Kitchen, which has been phased out. The CDK – with a footprint of 20x20 feet – was large, heavy and hard to move. The new facility takes up less space and is easily transportable, said Steve Belmore, a mechanical engineer with the Combat Feeding Directorate at Natick.

“The new kitchen is lighter, and you can break it up into pieces,” said Belmore.

“You’re not stuck with a container.”

The BEAR kitchen – which feeds up to 350 people per meal – is only the second one produced for use in the Air Force. The

first one – a prototype – was installed on Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., for testing in 2010.

Although this is the model the Air Force is moving forward with, it could be a year or two before Airmen start seeing this out in the field, Belmore said.

“The contract is due to be awarded soon, and additional testing will occur on the first kitchen built,” he said. “There should be some being manufactured within a year or so.”

WASHINGTON – Longterm temporary duty rules that became effective Nov. 1 across the Department of Defense are expected to result in an annual savings of $22 million, of which nearly $9 million will be reaped for the Army each year, according to the service’s chief for compensation and entitlements.

Long-term temporary duty, or TDY, is a period between 31 and 180 days, and those Soldiers and Army Civilians will receive a flat-rate per diem equal to 75

percent, said Larry Lock, adding that travelers who are TDY for longer than 180 days will receive a flat-rate per diem of 55 percent.

The 75 and 55 percent rates apply to all three parts of the per diem – lodging, meals and incidentals.

“If you know you’re going to be TDY for a period in excess of a month and up to 180 days, DOD and the services expect you to plan accordingly. You don’t plan as if you’re going to be gone a few days. You have a long-term focus and should make long-term arrangements to

Lock said that up until a few years ago, civilian personnel who were on long-term TDY, especially for training, were receiving 55-percent per diem.

He added the Army changed its policy to also apply to reservecomponent Soldiers who were called to active duty in support of the war effort because it had worked so well with the civilian workforce.

He noted the changes are meant to give long-term TDY

each service branch develops its own equipment to bring out to a deployment environment, and that’s primarily because there are different needs.

“There are different mission requirements,” Belmore said. “Supporting an airfield is different than supporting an Army base with ground troops.”

The Army relies on more containerized facilities, while the Air Force relies on more tent-based facilities, he continued.

Moving away from the CDK was a great step for the Air Force, said Staff Sgt. Rob Champine, a Services Academy instructor who also helped set up the tent shelter.

“With a CDK, everything is bolted into place,” he said. “If a 6-inch wire breaks behind a tilt grill, you have to remove two ovens because of the location of the tilt grill.

It can take a day to even get back to where the wire is, and it’s possible the base doesn’t have a replacement for the wire. So, you go from having a fully established meal to having everyone eat meals-ready-to-eat.”

Making it easier to replace components of the kitchen is a huge improvement over the CDK, said Belmore.

“This kitchen uses commercial off-theshelf equipment – the same appliances that restaurants buy – and all we’ve done is integrate them into the footprint of a tent,” he said. “Even the tent is a commercially available shelter, so it’s not government unique.

The integration of the appliances is unique to the government, but the parts are easier to get, so it’s more sustainable.”

“If you were going to rent a car for example, and you know you needed that car for a month or more, would you be willing to pay daily rates as opposed to the less expensive monthly rate?” Lock said. “Common sense would say you should plan accordingly, and that we be prudent travelers. It’s pretty much that simple.”

TDY-approving officials do have flexibility to authorize 100-percent per diem, he said, but that is as an exception to policy based on a location where there is no guarantee a member will be able to get lodging at a reduced rate.

“Travelers who are authorized the flat-rate per diem are no longer required to submit a lodging receipt, but before reimbursement, they may need to have a receipt to validate the lodging costs,” Lock said, noting that staying anywhere for free or buying a home at a TDY location makes the traveler ineligible for the flat-rate per diem payment.

“Probably 99 percent of the time, no one is going to ask for a receipt because there’s imbedded in this policy change a 25-percent savings, period,” he said. “We don’t want to press the inconvenience to the traveler because you would give them no incentive to do anything else other than to stay in the most expensive place they could afford given in terms of reimbursement.”

White, a motorcycle patrol officer from Glen Allen, will speak about the dangers of being a distracted driver, driving under the influence and the consequences of poor choices. He will explain Virginia state laws regarding motorcycles. He also will talk about his personal experiences as a patrol officer.

The event is sponsored by the CASCOM Progressive Motorcycle Program and supported by the Installation Safety Office. If time allows, there will be a discussion on what to look for when purchasing a used motorcycle.

Ed Newell, a safety and occupational health specialist with the Fort Lee Garrison Safety Office, said that anyone is welcome to attend this or any of the programs sponsored by the program.

The purpose of the PMP is to establish organizations where less experienced

and seasoned riders can foster a supportive environment of responsible motorcycle riding and enjoyment.

“Such environments create positive conduct and behavior, and serve as a force multiplier that supports a commander’s motorcycle accident prevention program,” said Newell. “Successful mishap reduction requires the support of commanders, first sergeants, supervisors, motorists, and the military and civilian communities at large.”

Newell said recently collected accident data reveal over half of motorcycle fatalities were the result of single-vehicle accidents that involved riders exercising poor judgment and risky behavior.

The Garrison Safety Office encourages motorcycle groups to participate in the traffic safety programs by being a conduit for positive education, mentorship, publicity and safe riding awareness for the riding community.

The office can provide information to group leadership on local risk areas and concerns, and offer support materials and training.

This is the opening paragraph of an article from the 25th anniversary edition of the Fort Lee Traveller on June 30, 1966, under a headline “Bakers School Moves to Lee.” “Members selected for these classes,” the article read, “are chosen from graduates of Army Baker’s courses ‘C’ and ‘E’ with at least one year of practical experience as a background.

Also attending the classes will be Navy and Marine Corps bakers.

The article noted the curriculum of the course will include “work in the

“Bread kept them going in the field or the mess hall and that’s why the Army placed so much importance on ingredients and operated this Master Baker’s Course at Camp Lee.” He said the Army had many Bakers Schools in-

cluding the one at Camp Lee, but the course here offered higher-level instruction.

Stand in the footprints where Civil War officially ended, America reunited Phillip Tracy Public Affairs Intern

It marked the end of the American Civil War and the start of a unified United States on Palm Sunday, April 9, 1865. The Battle at Appomattox Court House, on a site located less than two hours from Fort Lee, is where Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered and the confederate states admitted defeat.

Appomattox represents the closing chapter of a brutal war that claimed more than 600,000 American lives.

“This is where the nation reunited,” said Patrick Schroeder, historian at the Appomattox Courthouse National Park. “All previous battles simply led to another battle. Not here. There were no Army-level battles after Lee’s surrender.”

Having just taken Petersburg after months under siege, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant commanded the evacuation of the Confederates and their president Jefferson Davis out of the capital – Richmond. He then chased down Lee’s dwindling army across Virginia and intercepted them three miles east of Appomattox. A battle ensued, but outnumbered and without proper rations, Lee was forced to surrender.

“Most people know Appomattox as the place where General Lee met with General Grant and ended the Civil War,” said curator Joseph Williams. “But they do not realize there are 27 historic structures, 1,700 acres, and a large museum collection. Our living history programs and rural Virginia landscape give people a real sense of the past,

and once here, many realize they have not budgeted sufficient time to see all that they wish to see.”

The national park is a campus comprised of original and restored buildings that not only chronicle the battle that led to the end of the war, but also highlight the way in which people lived in the mid-to-late 19th century.

When visitors walk through Appomattox, they can envision how the town stood during the Civil War battle.

The main building is a large visitor’s center – the restored Court House – where guests can learn more about the battle through numerous exhibits. The center also has artifacts from the war, photos of soldiers and interactive displays showing how Appomattox became the place where the war ended.

This exhibit includes the final copy of the surrender terms done by Parker and uniforms worn at the surrender.”

A popular stop is the reconstructed McLean House – the site of the surrender where Grant and Lee sat in the parlor at a marble-topped table to sign the document.

The park also has a tavern that dates to 1819, stables, a general store, a jailhouse and more.

What keeps people coming back? “There is a stillness at Appomattox – the peacefulness – and our living history programs help bring this period to life,” said Schroeder.

April 2015 marks the sesquicentennial of the surrender and a number of special events, ceremonies and reenactments are scheduled.

The park is located about 3 miles northeast of the town of Appomattox off of VA Route 24. The visitor center is open daily, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., except for

closures on Winter federal holidays. The fees from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend are $4 per person or $10 a vehicle. The fees from Labor Day weekend through Memorial Day weekend are $3 per person or $5 per vehicle. Those 15 and under are admitted free all year. Visitors should allow at least two hours to tour the historic village.

Thanksgiving is the traditional start of the winter holiday season. According to State Farms claims data, it also is the day that more cooking fires occur than other time of the year. Grease and cooking-related fires and injuries more than double on Thanksgiving when compared to other holidays.

Sadly, many families’ holidays are ruined by home fires. According to the American Red Cross, nearly 47,000 fires occur during the winter holidays, claiming more than 500 lives, causing more than 2,200 injuries, and costing $554 million in property damage.

Cooking is the No. 1 cause of home fires and injuries, with most of the incidents caused by unattended cooking followed by items that were placed too close to the burners, said Randy Fitzpatrick, Fort Lee Assistant Chief for Fire Prevention.

Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the risk starting during the preparation of your Thanksgiving meal.

“Let me start by saying that a longtime food favorite is the delicious deep-fried turkey you can do at home,” said Fitzpatrick.

“This practice has quickly grown in popularity thanks to celebrity chefs and shows promoting the deep fried turkey. While some people rave about this tasty creation, safety experts are concerned that backyard chefs may be sacrificing safety for

good taste. The National Fire Protection Association goes as far as to discourage the use of outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers altogether.”

Fitzpatrick provides these tips on frying a turkey safely: • Turkeys should be no larger than 12-14 pounds in size and must be fully defrosted.

• Turkey fryers should always be used outdoors at a safe distance from buildings and any other material that can burn.

• Never use turkey fryers on wooden decks or in garages. Make sure the fryers are used on a flat surface to reduce accidental tipping. Never leave the fryer unattended. Most units do not have thermostat controls. If you don’t watch the fryer carefully, the oil will continue to heat until it catches fire.

• Never let children or pets near the fryer when in use. Even after use, don’t allow children or pets near the turkey fryer.

The oil inside the cooking pot can remain dangerously hot hours after use.

• To avoid oil spillover, do not overfill the fryer. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to determine the proper amount of oil to add.

Simple tips to avoid holiday weight gain Counting the excuses people have during this time of the year for overeating, skipping anything resembling exercise or ingesting high-calorie foods with little or no nutritional value could be exhausting to say the least.

Let’s face it, Americans usually find it easier to cast holiday weight gain into the pool of inevitability than accepting the fact those extra inches around the waistline could be avoided with a little knowledge and discipline.

In the interest of improving and maintaining the health of the Fort Lee community, the Kenner Army Health Clinic wellness team invites Traveller readers to check out the following list of recommended do’s and don’ts. Many of the tips are simply changes in the approach to eating, which has a direct impact on overall calorie intake not only during the holidays but anytime throughout the year. Of course, there’s no shortcut or substitute for regular exercise, so that’s on the list as well.

Bottom line – Team Kenner wants everyone to gain knowledge, not weight, this holiday season.

These are the KAHC staying slim tips: 1. Keep weight in check: Weigh yourself in the morning at least once a week, or preferably twice on nonconsecutive days.

This will reveal any increases in weight from the previous week and serve as a

motivational trigger for smarter eating.

2. Jumpstart your metabolism: Get out of bed 15-30 minutes earlier than usual and do something that involves movement. Early morning workouts strengthen one’s resolve for the day and rev-up the body’s metabolism. Remember – energy creates energy – physically and mentally.

Consider purchasing a walking video or downloading a workout app with motivational music that adds an element of fun to the exercise routine.

3. Be thrifty with “calorie spending:” Peruse the buffet table and only take the irresistible foods that come once a year.

Don’t start with sushi, for example, if you eat it all the time; and resist the high-fat chicken wings and “bar food” that offers little in the way of nutrition. Smart choices in moderation will stave off cravings that lead to overeating later.

4. Avoid “food-orexia:” Starving all day just to pig out at night is a huge nono. Eat lean protein and non-starchy vegetables throughout the day. It will maintain blood sugar levels and keep you feeling full until the big meal. The lean combo also gives people calories to “spend” on their favorite splurge.

5. Say “no” and mean it: Holiday parties shouldn’t leave individuals feeling guilty and depressed about overindulgence. Take the time to enjoy the festivities and carefully chosen food treats. For

those “overeating-encouragers,” have a few planned responses ready like a simple “no, thank you, I’m full” or “I’ve already ate enough of your delicious food.”

Changing the subject also is a good idea.

Often, party planners are fishing for compliments and they really don’t care about full plates.

6. Intensify workouts: Time always seems to be in short supply during the holidays, but don’t ditch the workout.

It’s smarter to bump up the intensity and shorten the time if necessary (i.e. 15 minutes on the treadmill at a higher intensity, rather than 30 minutes). Take advantage of alternative exercise as well. When shopping, use the stairs instead of the escalator. Park farther away from the store entrance. Walk faster through the mall. Do calf raises while standing in line. Exercise opportunities are abundant in everyday life.

7. Practice the three-bite rule: Just have to have it? Take enough for three small bites – that amazing first taste, a satisfying middle and then a lingering finale.

All the bites after that will taste the same and just add calories.

8. Avoid “hangover” food: Don’t take leftovers home or unload them on others. These plastic-wrapped treasures are typically high-calorie items like pies, macaroni salads and casseroles. Keeping them out of the house is the best way to resist temptation. If family members insist on sharing their bounty, tell them to portion out what they want and stash what you take home in the freezer. Nonperishables? Keep them up high in the cupboard behind the cornstarch. In moments of weakness, people generally go

The seesaw battle of pre-game taunts closely resembled the ensuing game play during the Ordnance School’s 3rd annual Turkey Bowl Flag Football Tournament Friday on the browntinged fall tundra of Whittington Parade Field.

Both teams talked up their ability to win the contest prior to kickoff – the NCOs claiming power and experience, and the officers predicting an unbeatable combination of speed and agility after loading up their squad with young lieutenants from the Ordnance Basic Officer Leader Course.

“We’re putting a lot more talent on the field this year,” observed Col. Jeffery Carter, 59th Ord. Brigade commander. “Speed and youth … that’s something we didn’t have last time,

and I think the NCOs are in for a bit of a surprise. I predict we’re going to win by a touchdown.”

“Yeah, I heard (Brigadier) General (Jack) Haley went and got some BOLC guys, thinking that was going to help the officers,” responded Command Sgt. Maj. Edward Morris, Regimental CSM for the Ord. Corps. “We’re going to counter that with intelligence. We have an old-school team of experienced NCOs who are ready to do what they do best … teach these officers how we adapt and overcome every single time.”

Morris followed that analysis with a rather lofty prediction – doubling the 55-zip blowout the NCOs posted during the 2013 contest. “We had a great offense but not a very good defense last year,” he said. “This time we’re bringing both, so I have no doubt whatsoever that our tradition of winning the tournament is safe. Thus, the stage was set for the third installment of the pre-Thanksgiving gridiron showdown. Winning the coin toss and electing to receive, the officers opened the game with a series of passing plays that earned them short yardage and a couple of first downs, but failed to put points on the scoreboard.

It was the same deal for the NCOs during the following offensive drives.

Clearly, the “ying-experience and aggressiveness” of their squad couldn’t overcome the “yang-quickness” of the officer players and vice-versa.

There was a glimmer of hope for the officers late in the half when 2nd Lt. Jochi McNair, 16th Ord. Bn., intercepted a short pass thrown by Staff Sgt. Abdur Khan, 832nd Ord. Bn., giving them a good shot at the goal line.

William Kelly (16th Ord.) connected with one of his receivers in the end zone for what was thought to be the first score of the game until a penalty negated the play. A few minutes later, the score remained 0-0 as the teams entered the mid-game break.

“Perhaps we went in a little too overconfident,” Morris said of that first half.

“I think we were beating ourselves by not settling down and running the disciplined plays.”

“I liked the way we were playing, and it looked like we were getting into a good rhythm,” Carter said. “If anything, the NCOs realized they weren’t going to get handed an easy win like last year. We were feeling pretty good about that.”

The second half offered more of the same until a late-game lateral from Khan to Spc. Marquis Wright, who hustled for another 20 yards before

“What a great ggame,” said Haley afterward. “Both teams t played hard and truly representted the pride of the Ordnance Corps. I know k we have a lot of fun trash-talking g each other and going after the bragginng rights that comes from winning the ccompetition, but it’s really about teamw work and camaraderie in the long-run. It has a positive effect on morale as well. w In that spirit, I offer my congratullations to the NCO corps for its Turkeyy Bowl 2014 win.”

Army Emergency Relief releases new app WASHINGTON – Army Emergency Relief recently released an app that will give Soldiers and families instant access to AER information 24/7.

This app will provide basic information about AER, explain the specifics of both the assistance and scholarship application process, as well as explain loan repayment procedures, said retired Col. Guy Shields, AER’s chief of Communications and Public Affairs.

Highlights of the app are the “Frequently Asked Questions”

buttons in each category.

These FAQs address the vast majority of questions that are received at AER headquarters every day. Another key feature of the app will be the “AER News” button, which will be the “live” Twitter feed of @ aerhq that will provide the latest AER news, updates and financial management tips.

The app is available for both iPhones at the Apple App Store, and for phones that use the Android operating system, at Google Play. Soldiers will be able to go to their respective app store and download the

AER app for free. Simply enter “Army Emergency Relief” in the search field.

Be prepared for winter storms by getting a kit, limiting travel While the dangers of winter weather vary across the country, nearly all Americans, regardless of where they live, are likely to face some type of frigid temperatures and/or severe storm events with frozen precipitation at some point in their lives.

Winter Preparedness Week runs Sunday through Dec. 6, and individuals should use the time to remind themselves of how to prepare for a winter storm.

These events can range from a moderate snow over a few hours to a blizzard with blinding, winddriven snow that lasts for several days. Many winter storms are accompanied by dangerously low temperatures and sometimes by strong winds, icing, sleet and freezing rain.

One of the primary concerns is the weather’s ability to knock out heat, power and communications services to homes or offices, sometimes for days at a time. Heavy snowfall and extreme cold can immobilize an entire region.

“Preparing for a winter storm is just as important as preparing for any natural disaster,” said Thomas Loden, emergency manager, Department of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security. “When a disaster strikes, emergency services personnel may not be able to get to you as quickly as you or they want too. Winter storms can last for several days, be accompanied by high winds, freezing rain, heavy snowfall and, of course, cold temperatures.”

The National Weather Service refers to winter storms as the “Deceptive Killers” because most deaths are indirectly related to the storm. Instead, people die in traffic accidents on icy roads and of hypothermia from prolonged exposure to cold. It is important to be prepared for winter weather before it strikes.

What to Do: Cover exposed skin, but do not rub the affected area in an attempt to warm it up. Immediately seek medical help.

Hypothermia: Dangerously low body temperature, characterized by uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness, and apparent exhaustion.

What to Do: If symptoms of hypothermia are detected take the person’s temperature. If it is below 95 F, immediately seek medical attention. Get the victim to a warm location. Remove wet clothing. Warm the center of the body first by wrapping the person in blankets or putting on dry clothing.

Give warm, non-alcoholic beverages if the victim is conscious.

“Historically, most fatal motorcycle accidents involving Soldiers are single-vehicle,” said Edens, explaining that nationally, many riders are killed when other drivers do not allow them room to maneuver in time to prevent a collision.

He noted, “Even when we’ve lost Soldiers in multi-vehicle accidents, it’s often been the direct result of indiscipline on the Soldier’s part – alcohol use, excessive speed or lack of personal protective equipment.”

Alarmingly, leaders and Soldiers over the age of 25 have comprised the majority of rider fatalities during the past several fiscal years.

The U.S. Army Combat Readiness/Safety Center states the number of Soldiers killed in motorcycle accidents fell last year and Army officials point to the upgraded, mandatory safety training required of riders on all installations as one reason for the decline.

• Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.

• Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags.

• Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children – up high in a locked cabinet.

• Never leave children alone in room with a lit a candle.

• Make sure smoke alarms are working.
