There is a program on television that is based on New Yorkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;finest.â&#x20AC;? They are better known as the New York Police or NYPD. The showâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s title is â&#x20AC;&#x153;Blue Bloods.â&#x20AC;? One of the main stars is Tom Selleck of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Magnum P.I.â&#x20AC;? fame â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for those old enough to remember that program. His role in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Blue Bloodsâ&#x20AC;? is the NYPD police commissioner.

There was a situation in a recent episode that called upon his wisdom as New Yorkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;top copâ&#x20AC;? to make a weighty decision as to the fate of one of his police officers. It is his response at the end of the episode that should resonate with all

of us. He goes into some detail, during a press conference, about some actions of this particular officer while off-duty. He stated, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yes, police officers are expected to be held to a higher standard, to know right from wrong; have to, at times, make quick decisions and exercise good judgment in all circumstances.â&#x20AC;? He concluded his remarks with â&#x20AC;&#x153;We need to remember they also are not perfect but humans, and sometimes humans make mistakes.â&#x20AC;?

Parents and good leaders want the best from those whom they exercise parenting or leadership over. How often do we forget who and what we have to work with? It is a human trait to want the best from and for our children or service members. We want them to be the

October is National Crime Prevention Month â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a time to focus on the victimization of unsuspecting individuals and what people can do to thwart criminal activities in their communities.

This annual awareness campaign started in 1984, and it has made a notable difference in crime rates across the country. It brings issues like home

robberies, identity theft, gang violence, bullying and so on into the national spotlight so individuals and families can realize how they could become victims and what they can do to decrease their chances of being a targets.

The focus of this first Traveller column for the Fort Lee NCPM observance is cyber-crime awareness and prevention. Consider the following scenario: The FBI received a number

of nationwide complaints earlier this year that revealed cyber criminals posed as U.S. military personnel to sell personally owned vehicles. Victims believed they were responding to legitimate sales ads posted on Craigslist, when in fact the ads were fraudulent and the vehicles advertised did not exist. Unsuspecting buyers forked over thousands of dollars up front to pay for vehicles online that they never received.

This example illustrates

the importance of maintaining awareness when it comes to buying products over the Internet. A little bit of skepticism on the part of a potential buyer can go a long way in protecting individuals from a scam disguised as a routine online marketplace or classified ad transaction. Fortunately, there are simple things everyone can do to prevent this and other types of cyber crime from happening.

Buyers should take a common sense approach. If a deal seems too good to be true or the seller makes it seem like an emergency that requires immediate action, the chances are likely that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bogus deal and

Protecting oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s identity is equally important. Names that can be associated with Social Security numbers, addresses, phone numbers and credit card information are a gold mine for cyber-thieves. Many are fooled by sites like Craigslist that make it easy to hide behind the identity of a proxy email rather than a true email address.

ticle. The officer in question received a suspension of 30 days and a probationary period of one year but did not lose his job. He was a good cop who made a not so good policing decision after he had been drinking. Looking back, he stated to another officer, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I probably should have just kept on going and not gotten involved.â&#x20AC;? The commissioner took all things into account, weighing all the evidence presented to him, and remembered a very important fact; the officer was not perfect, as none of us are, but a human who made a mistake.

When we are confronted with day-to-day dealings of others do we look at just that one circumstance and always â&#x20AC;&#x153;lower the boomâ&#x20AC;? or do we charitably correct and remember they are not perfect but human and humans do at times make mistakes?

When they do not perform as we expect and, sometimes, demand, we get frustrated, put them down verbally, to their face, even in front of others, and, many times, speak about them to others, by saying they are no good/worthless, a disappointment and failure to the family, the unit (if applicable) and to themselves.

There are a number of instances where people do disappoint. They make choices based on many factors. Sometimes these choices are made without taking the time; if even need be quickly, to weigh the consequences of their actions and/or words. These are times when corrective measures need to be put in place. That was the case in the television episode spoken about at the beginning of this ar-

Thirteen Soldiers and one civilian employee of the Army Logistics University were recognized during the 2014 Distinguished Instructors and Educators of the Year ceremony here Tuesday.

John E. Hall, ALU president; Col. Matthew P. Shatzkin, ALU commandant; and Command Sgt. Maj. Clifton H. Johnson, Logistics Noncommissioned Officer Academy commandant, honored the 14 individuals in front of a gathering in Green Auditorium, Bunker Hall. The top officer, warrant officer, NCO, civilian and educator of the year who will represent ALU at the TRADOC competition in the near future also were named.

The top awardees are: Chaplain (Maj.) Thomas J. Faichney, officer of the year; Chief Warrant Officer 3 Michael L. Favor, warrant officer of the year; Sgt. 1st Class Dawn Hernandez, enlisted instructor of the year; Roy T. Ray, civilian instructor of the year; and Maj. James R. Henry, educator of

Military members, retirees and their families attended the post’s Retiree Appreciation Day Saturday to learn more about their benefits and organizations available to them.

Kenner Army Health Clinic staff members also were available to provide information about health services, blood pressure screenings and flu vaccinations.

During the event’s program, Col. Paul K. Brooks, garrison commander, welcomed the retirees and said he hoped the event would be beneficial for them.

“This is just one way for us to reach out to the retiree population,” he said.

“The bottom line is that we care about you and want you to know you are part of the team. This event is a way for to show you how much we appreciate you and your service to the country.”

“Retiring is a major milestone,” Gerton said. “It’s a line of departure between your active service and a new phase in your life where there are new ways to serve and add value to your life.

“Regardless of (how long you serve), the DOL is committed to help all veterans achieve your career goals,” she continued.

Retired Sgt. 1st Class Leon Bailey – who retired in October 2000 in the Fort Lee area with nearly 23 years of service – attended the event for the first time since his retirement.

“The event has been very interesting, and there is a lot of information you can receive,” he said. “I also like the opportunity to meet fellow retirees and network with them.”

Lt. Col. Dennis Timerman, a reservist who is set to retire within the next year, said he attends the appreciation days each year to prepare for his retirement and get his flu vaccination.

“My goal for today was to get into contact with the Reserve section of the retiree services department at the Soldier Support Center,” he said. “It’s helpful to have all these services available at once.”

Those who have not registered to vote at local election offices should do so now.

If anyone has not received their state ballots prior to Oct. 6, they will need to submit a Federal Absentee Write-in Ballot

(SF-186). If the state ballot is received after submitting the FWAB, individuals can still fill out a state ballot and submit it.

The local election office will only count the state ballot if they have both the FWAB and State Ballot – once they verify that they are both from the same voter.

The Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act states that any service member, eligible family member or overseas citizen may be eligible to vote absentee.

The FPCA (SF-76) allows people to apply to register to vote, request an absentee ballot and/or update contact information with the local election office.

The FPCA is the primary method of communication between individuals and an election official.

The information provided on this form is all the local election office has to determine if individuals meet the state voter registration requirements, which election materials send describing where and how to send a ballot.

FVAP.gov offers an online assistant to walk people through completion of the form, and provides a blank fillable PDF. Hardcopies of the

form also are available at the Fort Lee Installation Voting Assistance Office.

Once completed, do not forget to print and sign the forms or ballots before

Your defining moment: “Basic training. That flipped my world upside down. It was rough. I mean it was the first time away from home and not being able to talk to family. Being cut off from the world changes you.

Also, getting yelled at everyday; it changes the way you think and you’re more appreciative of everything.”

Did the Army fulfill all of your initial expectations? “So far it has. When I first got here, I didn’t know how it was going to be because it’s a really small company. I thought it was going to be pretty laid back, but we do have a purpose. There’s something to do every day.”

Talk a bit about your job: “We support the AIT and ALU when they conduct their field training. With the officers, they are in charge of convoys. We just drive the trucks around, and they tell us where to go. With the AIT Soldiers, we will go with them to move their bags and equipment and haul them around to where they need to go. We went to Fort Eustis not long ago and helped their AIT out during field training. We were in

Humvees in a convoy while the students fired their .50 caliber machine guns from the top. It was pretty cool.”

Why you joined the Army: “I wanted to have a purpose. I felt like working at Chick-Fil-A and all of the other jobs I had like Bath and Bodyworks; I wasn’t doing anything or going anywhere; just doing the same old thing every day and not making a difference for anyone. It got boring.”

What you love about your MOS: “All the personalities I get to work with. It’s not just about the driving because we do paperwork and we have schooling. It’s just everyone I get to meet.”

Some of the qualities you admire in leaders: “They have confidence and they always know what’s going on.”

Some of the qualities you admire in our fellow

Soldiers: “Their enthusiasm. They don’t come to work and be like, ‘Man, I don’t want to be here.’ It’s more like, ‘Let’s work together as a team because we’re here together.’”

What it means to be a Soldier: “Putting your life on the line; doing what you need to do and doing what’s right.”

Best thing about the Army: “Being able to pick your job.”

Worst thing about the Army: “Hurry up and wait (laugh).”

Goals: “I want to retire from the Army. I want to become an officer eventually– be in charge of something. I want to get as much training as possible, and I want to go to school. After I retire, I want to become a nurse.”

The Fort Lee Regional Archaeological Curation Facility at the corner of 22nd Street and Shop Road holds more than a half-million artifacts. The climate-controlled 3,000 cubic feet facility has a staff of archaeologists and a curator to assess and take care of the various cultural resources on post as part of the Cultural Resources Program. The facility houses historical items and artifacts for Fort Lee, Fort A.P. Hill, Joint Base Eustis-Langley, Fort Monroe, Marine Corps Base Quantico and the Petersburg National Battlefield. Fort Lee has 124 known archaeological sites that include Native American, historic homesteads, Civil War-related sites and more than eight miles of World War I training trenches. October is Virginia Archaeology Month and upcoming issues of the Traveller will include articles on the facility and the archaeology found at Fort Lee. It has an exhibit room with a variety of artifacts on display that is open to the public Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

They’ve prepared nearly a year for the competition, having gained experience competing from the company to the major command level.

They’ve run enough miles to double their normal physical training output.

They’ve studied the details of the various Warrior Tasks and Battle Drills over and over.

On the eve of the 13th Department of the Army Soldier and Noncommissioned Officer of the Year Competition scheduled here, those factors and more will affect the outcome of the Army’s annual Soldier skills showcase.

The competition, commonly known as Best Warrior, will feature 28 contestants – evenly divided between Soldiers and NCOs – from the Army’s major commands who will display their talents and skills in several tactical and administrative events over a three-day period.

“Soldiers can expect a rigorous and fastpaced competition that will not only challenge their skill level but their perseverance and fortitude as well,” said Sgt. Maj. Donna King, CASCOM G3 sergeant major and coordinator for the event.

In the past, events have included the Army Physical Fitness Test, a board appearance in front of the Army’s senior NCO leadership to include the Sergeant Major of the Army, an essay and a varied list of Warrior Tasks and Battle Drills that will test their wartime survival skills.

This year, as in years past, the actual list of WTBDs and how they will be presented to the contestants has not been disclosed. As a result, Soldiers must prepare themselves without favor to any one task.

Uncertainty also surrounds the participants as well. The competitors typically don’t know each other prior to the competition and

thereby can’t study their strengths or weaknesses. Even if they did, it would be of little value. Contestants are scored secretly during the events, a practice that downplays headto-head battles and emphasizes individual achievement.

Master Sgt. Jason Alexander, the 2006 NCO winner who represented the U.S. Army Forces Command, said those who make it to Best Warrior are on average well-studied and physically fit. The deciding factors are the

He recalled that some competitors had expectations that were unrealistic, and when they failed to meet their own performance objectives, they could not sufficiently gather themselves to fully recover.

“You kind of see other people mentally check out,” said the health care specialist.

You can see it happen when you kind of step back and take yourself out of it and don’t allow the other competitors to influence you; focus on the task, focus on the day, get through the day and take it upon yourself in the evening when you only get two or three hours of sleep to prepare for the next day.”

As a Best Warrior winner, Alexander said he was often charged with organizing Soldier skills competitions at various levels. He said from his perspectives as a competitor and organizer, it is critical to be consistent throughout the competition.

a learner’s permit. The final step is a skills test that awards the CDL. The entire process takes roughly five weeks.

The T2T was implemented two years ago, starting with the waiver program that allows highly experienced military drivers the means to obtain their CDL without commercial driver training. Skinner said he would like to see more military members take advantage of the program.

“What we’re trying to do is integrate this program with the Soldier for Life – Transition Assistance Program,” he said.

“We want to tap into that resource and find those who are looking to transition within the next six months and offer them the opportunity to get their CDL before they transition.”

The Troops to Trucks Program is exclusive to Virginia, said Skinner. The provision that allows experienced military drivers to waive the training requirement is available in all 50 states.

Spc. Jesus Montoya does not plan to use his commercial truck driver’s license anytime soon, but in case he does, he has the comfort of knowing he did not need to spend thousands of dollars at a driving school to acquire one.

The 22-year-old is a beneficiary of the Troops to Trucks Program, a partnership between the U.S Army Transportation School and the Commonwealth of Virginia that provides a free and convenient means for military members and veterans to earn a class A commercial driver’s license. The former mortuary affairs Soldier said the newly-attained CDL will help make him more marketable in the civilian job market.

always hiring people as truck drivers,” said Montoya, now a resident of Metairie, La., and who plans to attend school in the near future. “If you already have a CDL, your chances (of getting a job) are better than someone who doesn’t have one because the company has to pay

Its chief said military members can look forward to saving the roughly $6,000, the amount commercial driving schools

charge for the training. “It was another way the state was looking to help military members who were looking for a career after they served,” said retired Sgt. Maj. Jeffrey Skinner.

T2T is an initiative started under former Gov. Bob McDonnell, a former Soldier, who vowed to make Virginia the most military- and veteran-friendly state in the nation. The provision of the program that benefited Montoya allows training at military installations and primarily targets service members who lack the experience of those who can qualify for waivers, said Skinner.

The 508th Transportation Company here is responsible for the training. It consists of a twoweek course – three days in the classroom and seven days of road training – after students complete a Department of Motor Vehicles written test that awards students

October is National Energy Action Month and representatives of the Fort Lee Directorate of Public Works – Operations and Maintenance Division – are asking everyone in the community to renew and/ or reinvigorate efforts to reduce waste, recycle and save energy.

A series of information events are planned throughout the next four weeks to show Team Lee how it can be a better steward of the environment by decreasing the consumption of natural resources.

DPW representatives will place posters at various locations on post to bring attention to the

Energy Action Month campaign. They also will set up information booths at the PX food court, PXtra, Army Logistics University, and other sites to personally spread the message of energy conservation at work and at home.

This is a time to bring attention to the Building Energy Monitor program as well. Over the past year, the Installation Energy Manager has conducted several training sessions for these personnel who, as their title implies, are appointed to track energy usage in their administrative area and report possible inefficiencies. RICHMOND – Defense Logistics Agency Aviation Commander Brig. Gen. Mark Johnson hosted the Logistics Education Summit Sept. 12 at the DLA Aviation Headquarters on Defense Supply Center Richmond.

The summit brought together logistics community partners from Defense Acquisition University, Army Logistics University and eight additional colleges and universities together to learn about DLA Aviation’s mission and unique educational requirements of its workforce.

The summit also focused on the way ahead in the use of local educational resources and to find solutions and educational opportunities in acquisition, life-cycle logistics and technical quality training for the workforce.

Johnson welcomed the educators attending and shared a brief overview of his personal educational path. Topics Johnson spoke on were current events in the Department of Defense, thinking differently about the activity’s business, environmental changes, current training programs and process improvements, and an over-

view of DLA Aviation, including DLA Aviation’s Annual Operating Plan and organizational structure.

While projecting a complicated flow chart of the procurement processes on the screen, he said, “This is why we are here.” He continued to explain that the demonstration was to show the educators the complexity of the acquisition lifecycle process and the reason for meeting was to simplify, streamline and improve these processes while under the current budget constraints.

Johnson said it is important to educate and teach the workforce to think through problems and processes, to leverage the engineering and technical community, and to solve hard problems. “That’s the power this group of people (educators) bring to the table,” Johnson said.

Johnson was followed by questions from attendees on topics such as research and development projects and academic outreach programs to develop educational programs to assist in workforce training programs.

The training program presentation was followed by the DLA Aviation Pathways Program overview presented by Cheryl BrooksBrown, supervisory inventory management specialist, Command Support Directorate, who covered career development programs for the existing workforce and new hire training programs.

Those programs are the fulltime, two-year Pathways to Career Development graduate program and the Pathways Intern Development Program which is a paid work program for college and university students to gain experience on a part- time basis.

ALU President John Hall presented an overview of the university at Fort Lee. He spoke about ALU’s Army courses in logistics, leadership development courses, accreditations, certifications, and master’s degree courses. DAU certification requirements overview was then presented by Bill Kobern, director of Logistics and Sustainment Center, Defense Acquisition University. Kobern said their primary mission is focused on defense acquisition workforce training and a portion of that workforce is at DLA Aviation.

They provide practitioner training and development of the acquisition workforce with a focus on affordable readiness, with knowledge sharing resources, and with a web-based presence to provide information and tools to get practical information to the workforce.

Kobern was followed by Dan McLean, DLA Life-Cycle Logistics and Functional community manager, DLA Headquarters.

McLean presented the Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act overview.

McLean said since August 2010 the DAWIA group has been working toward improving the ability to provide efficient and effective lifecycle sustainability to customers and this has led to a culture change within the DLA career fields. He added the value of a professional education is a better understanding of the acquisition process and better understanding of the customers’ requirements by using the same professional language.

Annette Cunningham presented the DLA Aviation DAWIA certification overview. She said their group helps the workforce meet all the requirements in order to apply for certification.

Cunningham was followed by Dr. Barry Johnson the University of Virginia’s senior associate dean, L.S. Lacy Distinguished Professor, School of Engineering and Applied Science, who gave a presentation on the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Logistics Systems and Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing. The eight additional universities and colleges then gave overviews of their curriculums and programs that support logistics and business education. Those represented were: Virginia Commonwealth University, Central Michigan University, Longwood University, University of Virginia, EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University, Old Dominion University, The College of William and Mary and Virginia State University.

Johnson wrapped-up the event with questions and open discussions from the group. “I hope the value of the conversations today have been half as valuable to the educators as DLA Aviation has gained,” the commander said. He added just knowing the educational opportunities and what is going on in the institutions and the communities are important to the development of DLA Aviation’s workforce.

It challenges participants to focus on the three components of the Triad – sleep, activity, and nutrition – over 26 weeks and to establish health behaviors that will kick start your way to good health for

a lifetime. Health Promotion staff will provide tips, tools, techniques and coaching over the entire period as part of a concerted installationwide push toward better health.

“The life space is where people make decisions about their health related to activity, nutrition and sleep,” explained Bundt. “Army medicine estimates most patients visit a doctor oneto-five times a year, and each visit is about 20 minutes in length. Those 100 minutes are when Army medicine impacts patient health. The other 525,000 minutes a year when people are at work, or at home with their families and where health happens is the ‘life space.’ That’s where we take personal responsibility for maintaining or

improving our current health status and use the tools available through these initiatives to begin our own health challenge.”

The triad encourages Army family members to incorporate health-promoting behaviors and decisions into their everyday lives or life space.
