Virginia Zoo welcomes new species, African painted dogs
Press Release
NORFOLK, Va. — The Virginia Zoo is excited to share that they have welcomed a new species to the Zoo, African painted dogs! The Zoo has brought in one male and one female based on a recommendation from the African Painted Dog Species Survival Plan (SSP). The goal of the SSP Program is to maintain a genetically diverse, demographically varied, and biologically sound population of a species in human care. This program involves managing each individual of a species in AZA-accredited facilities and providing recommendations for their breeding and transfer that align with the goal of the Species Survival Plan.
The two African painted dogs, Sassy (7F) and Pollock (7M), are a companion pair that have aged out of breeding. When an animal is no longer recommended for breeding in the SSP, they may move to another zoo with room for them to thrive indefinitely. Sassy and Pollock can be found at the Zoo on the Asia: Trail of the Tiger in the former sun bear habitat.
In addition to providing a new home for this endangered species, the Virginia Zoo’s conservation round-up program will be fundraising for African painted dogs. This program allows guests of the Zoo to round up every purchase made in the Gift Shop and food service locations to the nearest dollar in support of wildlife conservation. Together, these small donations can make a huge impact on endangered species like African painted dogs.
As the dogs acclimate to their new surroundings over the next few days, the hours they are visible in their outdoor habitat may vary.
The Zoo is delighted to provide these African painted dogs with a new home and share their important conservation messaging with the community. They hope everyone will eagerly welcome this new addition to the Virginia Zoo and visit soon!
About African Painted Dogs: African painted dogs (also referred to as African wild dogs) are found in isolated populations throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. This species is Africa’s second most endangered carnivore with pack sizes averaging 10 individuals compared to the historic 100+. African painted dogs are listed as Endangered by the IUCN Red List with their most prevalent threats being habitat destruction, pollution, poaching, and the pet trade.

What will they see here and experience?
TonySchiavone:Oh,Yiorgo there’ssomuch to experience in an AEW show. I think we’re very good at the fan experience I know each and every night we select a fan of the night. Justin Roberts, who is our ring announcer, does a great job at keeping the fans involved. Thenthey’regoingtoseesomegreatwrestling I really think that we at AEW, do such a great jobofwhenwehaveatwohourDynamite like we’re gonna have at the Siegel Center, with
really great in-ring action. Not only technical wrestling, butsomeofthespectacularstuffthat you’ve come to know from Darby Allen or the Young Bucks or Will Osprey or Kevin Knight, ourTNTchampion, anotheronethatyouwere going to see a lot of And then they’re going to hear some very entertaining interviews for sure. You know, some other guys can get on the microphone and really entertain the fans AndIthinkthisdayandage,Yiorgo, andIknow youknowaswellasanybodyelse whenyou’ve got someone who can talk, someone who can do an interview or do a promo, then the fans reallyidentifywiththatperson.Youknow,we can think back to Ric Flair, to Dusty Rhodes, think back to Hulk Hogan, to the Macho Man RandySavage,toRoddyPiper, guysthatcould really, really talk, and that was a very entertaining thing about pro wrestling And that’s whatwehavenowwithguyslikeMJForwith CopeandCage, orevenFTR,JohnMoxley, very entertaininginterviews SoIthinkthat’swhat thefansaregoingtosee. It’sagoodexperience, and you get to see a live television show that’s doingverywellintheratings Goodtoseethat, howit’sproducedandthingsthathappenand makeit, makeitinteresting.SoIthinkthere’sa combinationofthingsthatthefansaregoingto seethatthey’regoingtowalkawaysaying you know what? That was a great night. And you knowwhat?Asyouknow,George, welovepro wrestling so allisfinewithme
Y:IknowthatyouwearmanyhatsinAEW. What are some of your other responsibilities andtitlesthatyouwouldlikeforourreadersto knowaboutyou?
TS: Well, Yiorgo I work in talent relations and that is not always an easy job, and it’s not always a job that is easy to define. If there is a wrestler that needs to go let’s say backstage, we’vegotmerchandiseandthemerchantpeople need the wrestlers to sign some photographs so they can take them out and sell them, then they call on me to go try to hunt the wrestler down Intheolddays Iwasthesameageasthe wrestlers, right?Butnow, mostofthemarethe ageofmykids Ihaveagoodrelationshipwith all the wrestlers I can go to the locker room andsay,“Hey,weneedyoutogodothis, orwe needyoutogotothat.”Andalotoftimeswhen wehavetheupperdeckpeoplecomein, there’s
a list and it’s my responsibility to get in touch withthewrestlersandmakesurethatthey’reat theircontractsignings Andthenthere’ssometimeswhenthewrestlersarenotallthathappy about what’s going on. I can go in and talk to them and try to lift their spirits Or as I like to say, kickthemintherearend. So,that’spartof myworkaswell.AndIalsoamsomewhatofa producer on the television side, in that when wehaveatapedshow, like, sometimeswewill go out, we’re not going to do it here in Richmond, butsometimeswe’llgoout, andwe’lldoa Dynamitelive, andthenwe’lltapeourCollision show that we air on Saturdays. So then I have to go back and make sure the commentary is rightandlistentosomeofthecommentary pull outsomeofthecommentary, insertsomeofthe commentarywiththehelpoftheguysinNashville whichiswhereourproductionfacilityis So those are the things that I’m pretty much involvedinduringthecourseofaweek.
Y: Wow, I love it. The more things change, the more things stay the same I love that you arestill‘handson’likebackinourday.
TS:Exactly Ireallyenjoyworkingwithwrestlers I really do The guys and the girls, I have agreatrelationshipwithallofthem.Itreatall ofthemwithrespect Notonlythat,Iliketokid aroundwiththemandastheyknow Igivealot ofthemahardtime So,Ithinkeverybodylikes me,andItrytobeliked,andIcantellyouright now,Yiorgo there’snoonebackstagethatIcan saythatIdon’tlike.Well,maybeMJF No,I’m
kidding I get along with everyone, and that’s one of the reasons that Tony put me in talent relations, because I do get along with everybody I’magoodguytotalkto Itrytohelpyou feel better about what’s going on Because, as you know, Yiorgo, in wrestling, like any form of entertainment, there’s a lot of egos, a lot of fragileegos There’salotofparanoiaabout, are theydoingrightbyme?AmIintherightspot? Andsoalotoftimesyouneedpeopletotalkto them.Andso,Ihelptodothatalot.
Y:I’msoimpressedwithTonyKhan.Besides thefactofhowmuchheloveswrestling,Ilove thephilanthropistinhimandwhathehasdone forsomanywrestlers, personnelandinvarious in need communities God bless him. Can you shareaTonyKhanstory?

But, and here’s the kicker here, Yiorgo Throughout the years in wrestling, there have been some good guy promoters like the Crockets They werethebest Theyweresonice, thosepeople. But throughout history, not every wrestling promoter has been a good person. Tony Kahn isagreatperson.Heisagreatyoungman.Heisa standup just truebluepersonthatyouwantto dowellfor Thatyoufeelthatifyouhaven’tdone yourjobright,Ifeelsometimesifmycommentaryisnotgoodenough, andI’mmyownworst critic, thenI’velethimdown.AndnotthatI’m afraid or that I’ve said something that I think he’sgoingtobrowbeatmeabout, butIfeellikeI lethimdownbecauseheissopassionateabout wrestling Tony is also so funny backstage sometimes He has his espresso coffee maker backstage, he’ll turn on the coffee maker and sometimes he’ll start talking to somebody and forget to put the cup underneath. And so anytime he forgetstoputthecupunderneath,he’llalways lookaroundandsay,“Well,it’sgonnabeagood day. I forgot to put the coffee cup in place.” So anytimeheforgetstoputthecupunderneath, weknowwe’regoingtohaveagoodTVshow. So we encourage him to forget to put the cup underneath. He needs the coffee because he’s doing so many things and it’s understandable thathewouldforgetthat. He’sjustawonderful person and if he were my son, I’d be so proud ofhim.Imean, look,he’sinabillionairefamily, anditwouldbe,Iwouldthink, easyforsomeone whowasasonofabillionairetojustliveoffthe laurelsofmyfamily ButTonyworkshard. He’s notlikethat.He’sgotsomanythingsgoingon.
