Navy breaks ground on largest on-base child care center in Hampton Roads – When the center opens in 2028, it will support up to 300 children By Stacy Parker
The Virginian-Pilot Staff Writer
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Work is underway to provide Hampton Roads military families a new option for child care. The Navy broke ground last week on its largest child development center in the region at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. The facility is expected to open in a couple of years. The project is part of the Navy’s effort to address ongoing waitlists for its child care centers on its bases and is part of a $52 million undertaking to expand facilities and grow services, including increasing staff salaries and benefits as well as boosting subsidies for community and family child
care spaces. According to a Navy Installations Command report last year, the changes have reduced the waitlist for child development centers and school age care by 50% — or from 5,000 to about 2,500 worldwide. Navy leadership and community partners gathered for the groundbreaking Tuesday. The base is in the city’s northwest corner and extends into Norfolk. The child development center will be built near Rockwell Hall Gym in Virginia Beach. Architecture firm Gensler is designing the one-story, engineered wood building; Layton Construction will build it. Work is slated to begin in February, and the project is expected to be completed in 2028. The 41,000-square-foot facility will
support up to 300 children from infancy through age 5. It will include 25 child activity rooms each grouped by age to support developmental needs, as well as administrative areas, a kitchen and mechanical space. There will also be five age-appropriate playgrounds, equipped with playsets, interactive stations and tricycles. The center will support early learning, social emotional development and continuity for families navigating frequent military moves, according to a Navy news release. “By reducing waitlists, minimizing off-base travel, and providing consistent, accredited care, the new facility will help service members focus on their mission with confidence and peace of mind, particularly dual military families and single parents for
whom child care availability is essential to operational readiness,” the release said. Wait times for the Navy’s child development centers are dependent on two factors: priority assignment (active duty, reservists, etc.) and number of children in the specific age group awaiting care, according to Military OneSource, a U.S. Department of Defense resource website for service members and their families. Virginia Beach Mayor Bobby Dyer and Councilman Joash Schulman attended the groundbreaking. Schulman said the center will add 120 new jobs and “take care of our military families and their kids while their families are out defending our country and earning their livelihoods.” “It will be a beautiful facility,” he said.

Public/Private Venture (PPV) Housing is also referred to as privatized housing in the Navy. The Navy partnered with different private management companies to provide housing to Service Members. These companies are responsible for the construction, renovation, maintenance and day-to-day management of the housing. PPV housing may be located on or off government property and in most cases will be former military housing. Government Owned (also known as Military Housing or Navy Managed Housing is what was formerly called on-base housing. While only available in limited quantities CONUS, Government Owned Housing is still widely available OCONUS. Community Housing is any housing that a Service Member may choose that is not PPV or government operated. This is housing outside of the base that is privately owned and operated.

Gabby’s Dollhouse Live from Page 1
Y: All shows, of course, are a team effort. How is it working with your fellow actors? NRC: For this being my first national tour I could not have asked for a better group of cast and crew of true professionals to work with. Everyone is so kind and hard working and resilient and open to the challenge of putting on the best show everyday. Y: What does it mean for you to play Gabby, who is such an iconic character to millions of children? NRC: It is a huge honor to get to play her in the show and for me it is an incredible opportunity to help kids learn to have fun in a really huge and unique way. I have done some performing for kids shows before, but never on this scale so it means the world to me to get to do what I love, to interact with children and introduce them to performance which is really art, my love, so I am very grateful and a dream come true. Y: When you’re on the stage, what is your most favorite part of the show that you are in, that you get to perform every night and really look forward to performing? NRC: Oh, my gosh, it’s so hard to choose because I am literally on the stage the whole show. I would have to say that my favorite part is at the very beginning because I get to run out onto the stage and hear all of the kids and all of their parents screaming when they see Gabby and I get to greet them for the first time and say hello. It’s not typical to break the fourth wall but we immediately establish that we are doing this show together and that it is really special, exciting and fun. Y: Is there a favorite part of the show that you’re not fully engaged or active in, that you enjoy watching kind of on the side, even if you’re on the stage? NRC: There is one big number that Gabby is not in. It’s CatRat’s big number “You Can’t Spell Meow Without Me” and all of the ensemble sing it and dance it beautifully and Kenny Lopez who plays CatRat really does an amazing job with his body and with his sly nature, so it’s really great to see him do that awesome number. And our whole cast gets a chance to show off their dancing skills as well in a way they don’t really do anywhere else in the show. It’s a super jazzy, silly number I love to listen to and watch every night. Y: Okay, so now let’s learn about you. Where were you born, what was life like growing up, and what made you fall in love with musical theatre? NRC: I was born in San Jose California. I moved to Los Banos, California when I was around 10. I was home schooled growing up from first grade until college so musical theatre was my opportunity first of all to meet people and make friends. I’ve been doing it since I was about seven. I have many hobbies and growing up homeschooled, I was given the opportunity to explore a lot of different artistic fields. In musical theatre, I found it to be a marriage of so many different fields. Growing up I got to see and explore lighting designs and musical directing and grow in so many artistic fields through musical theatre. I found it was unlike anything else I’ve ever done and that really made me fall in love with it and the opportunity to use and explore all of the artistic fields that I love. I eventually moved to Southern California to pursue musical theatre at California State University and I graduated from their Fullerton’s BFA Musical Theatre program. Y: What was your audition process like? NRC: I worked with Michel Donavan Casting for some other projects. They were casting this show, so they reached out to me to make sure that I saw that auditions for this were happening on Actors Access. I was very grateful. I was doing another show at the time and I wasn’t super actively auditioning and I was so honored and happy to get their message. I’ve loved working for Michael Donovan and the other shows that I’ve been in with them. And so I was very excited. I wasn’t super familiar with Gabby when I first saw the call, but I said, what an incredible opportunity this would be, and I’ve been wanting to tour forever. The audition was just like any other audition. It was a tape and I submitted a quick side. There was a little scene with Pandy Paws and they had me sing a pop song. I sang, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” It was upbeat, happy and

fun. And of course, we had to sing a little piece of “Hey Gabby” which is, you know, the theme song. And then going into the callback, they had us do an expansion on some scenes with some of the other characters like Pandy and Kitty Fairy, and then they wanted us to sing a fun, upbeat kid friendly song, so I sang, “Who Says” by Selena Gomez. It’s super fun. When the call came, it was really interesting because there were so many people involved. There were people on Zoom. There was a camera. Not only a Zoom camera, but another camera and people behind the table. So it was a kind of unique callback because there were so many points to my attention and a lot of instructions. I think just because the nature of the show and of Gabby is so specific it is really interesting and really fun. The decision process took a long time, of course, because it’s such a big deal, but then eventually I got a call and then I got on the bus. Y: Well, actually, that leads us to the next question and getting on the bus. You started in the fall and this is your first national tour. Tell us about it. What was that feeling like and what did you experience? NRC: Oh, my goodness. Yes indeed, this is
my first national tour. I felt a lot of feelings going into it. I was so excited. I’ve been wanting to tour and explore the country, while doing what I love and saving some money, for a long time. So especially this year I was feeling that, and so the universe said, “I hope you were serious because here it is.” So very, very grateful. I was very intimidated of course, it’s been an incredible gift and a freedom I’ve never experienced before as we have been kind of taken care of while exploring the country and seeing all the different cities, how they’re similar and how they’re different and how the people are similar and different and the uniqueness of each place in the country. But it’s also been a huge challenge. It’s essentially living out of your suitcase for months at a time. And so as you can imagine, it’s really difficult to be away from home, away from your family and friends and now you’re with people you don’t really know, in very close quarters, every day. That can be a huge challenge and it was, but as my cast and I quickly found out, we were all, fortunately, very good people, and we get along and enjoy each other. So it was jarring to suddenly have all these new roommates, but thank good-
ness, there are people that I find that I love now. Thank goodness. Y: What was that opening night for you like? What was the city that gave you that incredible feeling? NRC: Our first show was in Long Beach and it was unreal. It was amazing to finally have the kids in the audience. You know, it’s strange doing a show where you’re talking and interacting with kids the whole time and not actually have kids there. So it was a gift and changed the show completely, of course, to finally have them there. It was the most people I’d ever performed for up to that point, because I believe it was upwards of 3,000. And so the first, again, the first moments of me running on stage to greet everyone and the screaming, when I entered, it was unreal. I’ll never forget it. And it really, I think, set the tone for the rest of the tour that it was going to be huge and fun and loud and unlike anything else, I’ll never forget it. Y: I read that you like to play the guitar. What’s your favorite style of music to play when you just want to relax or listen to it? NRC: I love folk music. I love indie folk music. I play a lot of Fleetwood Mac songs, Lizzie McAlpine songs and Joni Mitchell songs. I really love folk music. Y: Tell us about a pinch me, wow moment or two, that you can’t believe this little girl from Cali got to experience being in this amazing wonderful crazy business of ours. NRC: Oh my goodness. I think just getting to work with the people I’ve worked with in the spaces I’ve worked here, this is, of course, a huge one, just the whole experience. It’s really a great question. When I was younger, I just hoped that someday I would get to perform on a stage bigger than the tiny community theatre that I performed in my hometown. That was kind of my biggest performance related dream that if I can do that, I think I’ll be happy. And now I’ve gotten to perform some of my favorite shows and favorite roles for hundreds of people, and now for around 4,000 people, and I’ve sold out theaters across the country. I think that alone the fact that I have made it this far. I would like to thank you Yiorgo, for being interested in what this little Cali girl has to say and what a huge honor that doing this interview with you has been. I also want to shout out to my cast, who I am on the road with and just say that they are all incredible and have made this experience something I will never forget. You know, it’s them that I spend time with every single day and I’m very grateful to have them and be doing this with them and I couldn’t be doing it without them. So when I speak for all of us, I hope I’m doing them all justice as well. Yiorgo is a sports, entertainment and arts writer. A stage, TV and movie actor, he is also a sports entertainer, educator, motivational speaker, writer, storyteller and columnist.

Floss daily for a healthier smile By TRICARE Communications FALLS CHURCH, Va. — While you brush your teeth every day, that’s only part of good dental care. Your toothbrush misses the tight spaces between your teeth where plaque builds up, and decay can take hold. Flossing fills this gap by getting into those hard-to-clean places. When you floss correctly, you remove harmful plaque and protect your gums from disease. If you skip flossing, or do it incorrectly, you’ll miss the parts of your teeth that your toothbrush can’t reach. This guide shows you the right way to floss so you can maintain a healthy smile.
Pick the right floss When it comes to traditional string floss, you have a few options: waxed, unwaxed, tape, or tufted floss. You can also use floss picks or holders if string floss feels hard to manage. Ask your dentist which type they recommend. Then see which one works best for you.
How to floss with string floss Use 18 inches of floss each time—enough to comfortably wrap each end of the floss around your fingers. Wrap one end around a finger on one hand. Wrap the other end around a finger on your other hand. In a gentle sawing motion, move the floss gently between two teeth. Don’t snap it through. Wrap the floss snugly around each tooth into a “C-shape” and slide it up and down the side of the tooth. Move it slightly below the gumline, but don’t force
(COURTESY PHOTO)
it too far down. Use a fresh section of floss as you move from tooth to tooth. Remember to floss the back surface of your last tooth at the very back of your mouth.
How often should you floss? Experts recommend flossing at least once a day. Daily flossing breaks up plaque buildup. If you don’t remove plaque regularly, it hardens into tartar 24-72 hours after brushing and can cause tooth decay and gum inflammation. Only a dental professional can remove tartar. Some studies show that flossing before you brush works best. Flossing first lifts food and plaque from hard-to-reach spots. Then you can brush and rinse them away more easily.
Flossing with braces or bridges Braces and bridges need extra care. Heavy plaque builds up under bridges, around supporting teeth, and along orthodontic wires and brackets. For braces: Use waxed floss with a floss threader. This plastic loop holds the floss so you can thread it around the wires. Loop the floss under the wire to clean between each tooth. Wrap the floss against the side of each tooth. Rub it up and down several times. Extend slightly below the gums. Pull the floss out and repeat on the next two teeth. For bridges: Use a floss threader to thread the floss under your bridge. Floss around each tooth of the bridge. Gently pull the floss out when you finish. Water flossers: These devices use a jet
of water to flush away plaque. They work well for people with braces or bridges. Ask your dentist or dental hygienist about the best way to clean your teeth with a water flosser.
Keep your smile healthy Flossing takes just a few minutes each day. Make it part of your daily routine to prevent cavities and gum disease. Talk to your dental provider about the best flossing method for you. And remember, if you need any help learning how to use floss, floss threaders, or water flossers, just ask your dental or dental hygienist to show you.
