SERVICE. SACRIFICE. HONOR. COMMITMENT.

These are all words you usually associate with active-duty military, but they can also be used to describe retired and veteran military. Our veterans continue to answer the call of duty, but these duties come in the form of civic leadership, volunteerism and dedication to the communities in which they live. They make significant contributions each and every day through their work, volunteer and philanthropic efforts. They are committed to service but do not ask for recognition. They understand and continue to live by the principles of service and selflessness.

We should count ourselves lucky that so many veterans have chosen to call Hampton Roads their home.

This December marks the sixth anniversary of the Still Serving Military Retiree and Veteran Awards. Founded

by The Flagship and Military Newspapers of Virginia, Still Serving is a recognition program that celebrates the service and achievements of our dedicated retired and veteran military in Hampton Roads. This year's group of honorees have made significant impacts in our community.

These individuals were chosen based on their volunteer accomplishments, for going above and beyond working with the military and civilian organizations and for their continued service to the Hampton Roads community.

We would like to thank our committee members for taking time out of their busy schedules to help select this year’s honorees. Our committee members are:

ABOUT HELPING THE COMMUNITY:

I’m a philanthropist by nature. I believe that serving the most honorable and vulnerable among us is a duty and commitment – not unlike service in the military. Having a child with severe congenital heart defects has provided me unique insight to the needs of our sick children, grieving families, and the amazing organizations who support them. This led seamlessly into the realm of supporting our wounded warfighters and families of the fallen. To support our community, I volunteer for some wonderful organizations who really “get it.” To name a few: Combat Wounded Coalition, Home of Wounded Wear; The Tribute Flight Foundation – preserving and honoring our rich military history and the countless sacrifices made to preserve freedom; Virginia Patriot Guard Riders – providing funeral escorts and flag line missions for fallen military heroes, first responders, honorably discharged veterans and also shield mourning families from interruptions created by any protesters; End 22 – raising awareness and providing support to end the epidemic of warrior and veteran suicides; Bridges for the Fallen (BFTF) – helping the BFTF team provide Gold Star Families with logistical assistance to dedicate bridges in all 50 states to warriors that were killed in action or post-traumatic stress disorder; Khedive Shriner – past chief and chaplain of the Khedive Fire Brigade Unit. We raise funds and provide hospital transportation for our 22 Shriner’s Hospitals for Children in North America. We are the world’s largest philanthropy and adore our Shrine Kids; American Heart Association, CHKD Butterfly Promises and LifeNet Volunteer. I have had the honor of speaking and presenting for these amazing organizations to raise awareness and provide emotional support for children and parents enduring the uncertainty and loss through education, faith and peer support.

ADVICE FOR TRANSITIONING TROOPS:

When you become a civilian, you will need to find your equilibrium. One of the best ways to do this is to find a nonprofit organization of like-minded people and get started. You will likely find veteran volunteers in various stages of post-military life who will guide and assist you while providing a similar sense of family and comradery.

You don’t have to have a pocket full of money to make a difference. Time is the most valuable resource you have and every effort counts. It’s not uncommon for me to work on spreadsheets one day and vacuuming the office on another. Every volunteer hour is one less that needs to be done by a paid employee and that translates to more funding going straight to the cause you’re supporting. There are so many worthwhile organizations that need your help. Don’t be afraid to roger up!

One of the greatest and most powerful memories I have is when many of the things I support intersected on one magical day. Every year, we at the Combat Wounded Coalition hold an amazing event called Jumping for a Purpose. Our Combat Wounded Warriors and Gold Star Families converge to experience fellowship and empowerment through skydiving. During one of these events, our young daughter was afraid to participate in playing soccer with other children because of her heart problems. A dear friend and wounded warrior triple limb amputee, Tyler Southern, approached her in his motorized chair and asked her to play but she was shy and hesitant that she couldn’t keep up with her peers. Suddenly, he rolled head-first out of his chair, grabbed the soccer ball and kicked it to her; she looked at him in amazement. He casually lifted his shirt and showed her some of his scars and she did the same. Seizing this poignant opportunity, I told Riley that many people have scars and fears – as I pointed to other warriors and Gold Star families – but, just like them, she will find that she is still capable of amazing things. She will have many challenges along the way but they would only make her stronger.

This lesson is enduring; now 11, she is a brown belt in Karate!

MILITARY HIGHLIGHTS:

When I was in the 7th Cavalry with the 4th Infantry Division, we were assigned to the Joint Task Force 6 Counter-Narcotics Operations. The night before we embarked on our first mission, I was assigned to escort a general to the forward operating base from the landing zone. My First Sergeant Top insisted that we send up a meticulously detailed SUV to drive him down the mountain to link up with the brass; I thought it was silly. As the Blackhawk touched down, the general dismounted the bird and shook my hand before I could even render a salute. I said to him, “Sir, your chariot awaits but it smells like vanilla and is too clean for any self-respecting scout. A driver will take you down the mountain.” He laughed and pointed to his boots and said, “These boots were made for walking, not for riding. Lead the way, scout!” We hoofed it down the mountain to my awaiting first sergeant. I relished in the hatred beaming from his eyes and prepared myself for 1000 push-ups and crappy details when we got back to garrison. The general invited me to dinner that night and we feasted on steak and lobster while everyone else ate meals ready to eat (MRE). The “stink eye” never ceased from Top. Finally, the general said to me, “Allen, you better get back to your squad before Top loses his patience. Thanks for taking the road less traveled with me; Garryowen!” I simply replied, “7th First, Sir … can I take a doggie bag?”

I was born and raised in Hampton Roads. Since I’ve made and fostered so many wonderful like-minded contacts over the years, I knew I could help to make significant impacts in our community over time.

ABOUT HELPING THE COMMUNITY:

Assistant Scoutmaster Troop 471, Oct. 1992 – Aug. 1993; Scoutmaster Troop 471, Aug. 1993 – present: I joined scouting with my oldest son in October 1992, and became involved the same day. I recalled all the good times with scouting in my youth and felt that the program was exactly what was needed for my son who had bi-polar. It allowed him to get involved with a group that was not judgmental and all him to build some self-confidence. Soon after joining, the scoutmaster asked me to step up and take over for him, a task that I agreed to and in August 1993 I assumed the role as scoutmaster, one that I have held since then.

Cub Scout Leader Pack 471, Sep. 2009 – March 2014; Cub Scout Committee pack 471, March 2014 – present: In September 2009, my grandson was ready to enter tiger cubs and they needed a leader, so I stepped forward and took on the job as cub scout leader for his den. I stayed with the program until 10 boys achieved their Arrow of Light award and then went onto boy scouting. I remain active with the pack in a support role and help host the two family campouts for the pack, one in the spring and one in the fall.

Scouting has become a way of life for me and I can see the impact that the program has had one many scouts and families. I have assisted 68 scouts in achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and hundreds more with simply having a scouting experience. I do not see myself giving up this position any time soon.

OUTSIDE THE MILITARY:

• Assisting 68 scout to make Eagle Scout – four more in the wings.

• Completing more than 72 Eagle Scout projects that benefit the community.

• Taking 10 boys from cub scouting to boy scouting.

• Having three deaf scouts in the troop and watching the other boys rally around them.

• Earning the District Award of Merit and Silver Beaver award in scouting.

• Completing wood badge training and earning my beads.

• Attending summer camp each year, 24 years, with the scouts in various states.

• Taking a group of 50 boys to spend the night on the USS Constitution where they participated in the flag ceremony and then onto Niagara Falls and then into camp for a week at Camp Gorton in New York.

• Providing a color guard for the annual meeting of the Gold Star mothers and seeing how proud my scouts were there.

• Completing more than 600 nights of camping with the scouts.

ADVICE FOR TRANSITIONING TROOPS:

Get involved early and stay involved. The community is looking for mentors and this is our community. The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow and we need to be there for them. Volunteering comes in many ways so there is plenty of opportunities out there to go around.

• Active duty for 26 years.

• Involved in the initial invasion of Grenada in 1983, and then onto spending 60 days on the gun lines off of Beirut, Lebanon, during the cruise.

• Made many trips to the North Atlantic with 2nd Fleet conducting training for battle groups to deploy.

• Recruit Company Commander 1987 – 1990 at Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinios. Truly a joy to take young men and transition them from being a civilian to a military sailor in nine weeks. I was able to graduate 95 percent or so of my recruits over the three years. During this time, I picked 88 young men in St. Louis, Missouri, and they were sworn in on the ball field of the St. Louis Cardinals and then off to recruit training. This was a group of dedicated individuals with a strong drive to be successful.

• My tour of duty on the USS Moosebrugger (DD 980) in Charleston, South Carolina. This was a hard five years with three-and-a-half of those five years out to sea.

TIES TO HAMPTON ROADS:

I came to Hampton Roads in 1990, for duty with Commander, 2nd Fleet. I became involved with scouting here in 1992, and it was one of the reasons that I remained here in the area was because of my involvement with scouting. Additionally, my youngest son had just completed 26 months of chemotherapy at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital and I felt that it was best to remain in the area in case there were future issues. He has been cancer free now for 16 years.

I achieved the pleasure of raising a family of three honorable children and helping to keep a family together for 53 plus years, with a marriage that survived all of the challenges that a husband and wife face in our world. I also received many honors in my career as a leader and my achievements were used as an example to others in my field as the one to follow to be successful.

I counseled many in the industry to improve their customer satisfaction ratings and bottom line success.

FROM HIS NOMINATOR, 2012 STILL SERVING HONOREE WESLEY T. WERLING:

Mr. Byrne has been a member of American Legion Post 117 for the past five years and the post commander for the past two years. As commander, he has revitalized and supported the Boys State and Girls State programs at the local high school. Boys State and Girls State are summer leadership and citizenship programs sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary for high school juniors. He selects the candidates to attend the program. He presents the Military Excellence award to the outstanding high school ROTC cadet selected by the school. He oversaw a program to solicit donations to send middle school students to New Orleans to compete in the National Craft Competition.

Mr. Byrne assures Post support for a little league baseball team. Veterans needing hospital care usually arrive with little or no personal items. Mr. Byrne organized an effort to collect personal toilet articles which are provided to veterans. Initially the Post forwarded 15 kits to McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond. The need is so great he instituted this as an ongoing effort. He assures veterans are recognized every July 4th, by coordinating transportation for vets to ride in the Reedville Parade. He makes sure the Post provides some financial support to the parade organizers. He assures American flags are posted at each veteran’s gravesite prior to Memorial Day. He assures veterans are provided an honor guard at funerals. He supports Boy scouts and has instructed a local troop proper destruction of American flags. This month, the district commander awarded the Post the Cardinal Award for a significant increase in membership. Robert is a member of the Infant Jesus of Prague Council of the Knights of Columbus in Kilmarnock, Virginia. He readily volunteers his time to assist with Council programs such as fund raising efforts, family programs, community programs, youth efforts and church activities. Recently, he was asked to collect funds in Northumberland County for a council project to purchase warm winter coats for needy kids. The Council goal was 96, eight cases, of coats. His efforts alone yielded more than $1,700, enough funds to meet the goal. This was an exceptional amount considering this is a small rural community with little industry and high unemployment. Through his effort, and that of other Knights assigned to collect in adjacent communities, the Council more than doubled the goal and purchased 18 cases of coats. Coats are provided to primary school personnel who see the children every day and know their needs. The exceptional effort by Bob enabled the council to greatly expand their program from two to four local primary schools plus the Haven, a home for battered women.

Robert serves on the Reedville Fisherman’s Museum Board of Directors. The museum preserves the history of the watermen who established the settlement in 1874.

Responsibilities include all aspects of museum management; maintenance of historic fishing boats, keeping the displays current, staff employment, fund raising activities, and events. He also volunteers weekly as a docent and conducts tours of the museum giving visitors a taste of the old days in the fishing town.

MILITARY HIGHLIGHTS:

I was stationed at a small naval air station in Michigan for my entire active-duty years.

I moved from the District of Columbia area in the early 1970s to raise our three children in an area we judged was best for their education and formative years – Hampton Roads.

ADVICE FOR TRANSITIONING TROOPS: When you serve others, the benefits are returned to you many times over.

ABOUT HELPING THE COMMUNITY:

I’ve been a Raising a Reader volunteer with P.B. Young Elementary School for seven years. I volunteer at P.B. Young because I want to help children develop a love of reading – which directly affects academic achievement. // Depending on where I was stationed during my naval career, I volunteered with the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Program. In Hampton Roads, I’ve volunteered with the Salvation Army Toys for Tots Program – and encouraged others to do so – over the last two years. In 2015, more than 4,000 families were served – to include almost 9,000 children. Children are our most valuable resource. To be able to help those who are less fortunate, especially at Christmas time is priceless. // As the adjutant of my local Disabled American Veteran Chapter, I am responsible for maintaining detailed records of my Chapter’s meetings, business affairs and official correspondence. I work closely with my Chapter commander, treasurer and other appointed officers. I’m also training to become a certified service officer (CSO). CSOs provide free, professional assistance to veterans and their families in obtaining benefits and services earned through their military service. // The Annual Point in Time (PIT) Count is held during the last week of January, it helps each city understand the scope of homelessness in their community. I volunteer to count those who are experiencing homelessness, whether sheltered or unsheltered during a specific 24 hour period. // As the volunteer chair of Veterans Affairs through Labor Engagement, the purpose is to engage the local labor community to work with our veterans. Some examples include hosting a job fair at the Union Hall, providing storage for donated household items, providing home rehabilitation for our veterans that have catastrophic injuries, or mentoring a transitioning veteran.

Annually, volunteer with the FoodBank of SEVA and the National Association of Letter Carriers to assist with Stamp Out Hunger, the nation’s largest one-day food collection effort. I helped collect 136,323 pounds of food on a single day in May 2016 for the Foodbank of SEVA. // In 2015, I volunteered to write letters and send cards to our deployed service members through Soldiers’ Angels. I volunteered because I remember being deployed and hearing mail call over the 1-MC. To actually receive an encouraging letter or care package from home certainly made my deployments a lot easier. // As a member of Tidewater Military Family Services Council, we meet on a regular basis to grow partnerships, share resources, increase and diversify program participation, and create networking opportunities for the benefit of the military connected population that we jointly serve. // As a volunteer, I work with a coalition of Women Veteran Organizations and Women Advocacy Organizations that support women veterans and military families. The mission of Women Veterans Rock! is engaging and empowering America’s women and girls in military families to excel in their post military and civilian lives. This past summer, Women Veterans ROCK! held a Summer Leadership Weekend Retreat at Regent University.

OUTSIDE THE MILITARY:

Working in my current capacity as senior director of Mission United. Mission United is a critical program that digitally connects our active-duty men and women, transitioning service members, Guard and reserve, veterans and their families with employment services, legal assistance, education, financial services, housing support and counseling. Providing our military connected families with the resources they need to create better opportunities for themselves and their families is what it’s all about.

ADVICE FOR TRANSITIONING TROOPS:

There are benefits to helping others. You gain leadership skills when you serve. Find out what speaks to you, what motivates you to want to give of your time, talent and treasure. When you have something that you strongly believe in, and you are passionate about it, nothing will stop you from serving your community.

Developing the unlimited potential of Sailors. Their skill set, teamwork, strengths and mutual trust of one another. No matter the duty station, the camaraderie throughout. Also working with the Seabees.

I was fortunate enough to receive orders for independent duty to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 23 and subsequently to Third Naval Construction Regiment (NCR) 3. NMCB 23 exemplified the ‘can do’ spirit. Over the years, the 23rd was recognized as “best of type” by commander of Reserve Naval Construction Force and the second Naval Construction Brigade a total of nine times – more than any other reserve construction battalion. The 23rd also won the coveted Rear Adm. John R. Perry Award; a distinction won seven times – making it the best of 17 reserve battalions. It was quite rewarding to deploy to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, or Gulfport, Mississippi, for weeks of tactical field training – ultimately working and training to support the Navy and joint forces throughout the fleet with construction projects and humanitarian missions.

TIES TO HAMPTON ROADS:

My son. Actually, I was ready to transfer overseas. I had my sights set on a new duty station and the possibility of earning a star – senior chief. At that time, my son was a sophomore at Maury High School.

When I shared the great news that we were transferring abroad – he said, “Mom, I don’t want to go.” He wanted to remain in Hampton Roads and graduate from Maury High School with his friends. That was the first time I gave serious consideration of how it felt for my son to be the perpetual new kid – a military connected youth. He was on school number five when I made the decision to retire in Hampton Roads.

We decided to retire in Virginia Beach for several reasons. We’ve resided in Virginia Beach since 1991, and two of our children grew up in the city. Virginia Beach and the surrounding area is heavily populated with military people and we have many friends in the local area as well. Hampton Roads is a great place for retired military folks to settle with easy access to commissary, exchange and medical services. All of that and we like the area and all that Virginia Beach offers.

ADVICE FOR TRANSITIONING TROOPS:

There are so many opportunities for volunteer service in Hampton Roads. Each is necessary but not all are for you. My advice would be to not jump into the first opportunities that come up or that folks recommend. Take some time off after retirement or leaving the military – time to decompress a bit. Get to know your passions, and when you finally do decide to volunteer, don’t commit immediately. Commit to a week or two and try it out. I tried several volunteer opportunities and dropped out of many. The right role for you will fall into your lap when you least expect it. It took me awhile, maybe 6 months to settle on Nauticus – Battleship Wisconsin (BB 64) – and the Make a Wish foundation. It took that long for me to finally realize that my true passion was interacting with people face to face and taking care of the most vulnerable among us – our children.

ABOUT HELPING THE COMMUNITY:

OUTSIDE THE MILITARY:

I am a volunteer tour guide on Battleship Wisconsin “Wisky”(BB 64) in Norfolk. I volunteer a couple of days a week and give guided tours inside the ship interpreting the World War II, Korean War and First Gulf War service of the ship. Tours last 90 minutes and we interact with people from all over the world highlighting “Wisky’s” capabilities and her service to our nation.

MILITARY HIGHLIGHTS:

I am a volunteer Wish Granter for Make a Wish. That means I interview potential Wish Kids to determine what their dream wish might be and I submit paperwork and track individual wishes from submission to conclusion. Average wait period is about 12 months so I meet with each child monthly to “keep the wish alive” with a Wish Enhancement Visit to help keep their minds on the dream and off of their medical situation. I track, from two to four kids, on average, at any one time. Most are out patients of CHKD hospital in Norfolk.

Men of Distinction is a nonprofit organization in Virginia Beach that works with young boys in lower income, Title 1 schools to provide mentoring, leadership and guidance in conjunction with local police precincts. I work as a mentor in an after-school program at Bettie F. Williams Elementary School were I’m a mentor to 4th and 5th grade boys. We provide male role model leadership to boys who may or may not have significant male role models at home. We also provide an avenue to encourage positive interaction between young men and police officers in a friendly environment.

I don’t think of my volunteer work outside of the military as an achievement per se. To me it’s an honor and a privilege to assist and guide others as they work together to make Hampton Roads and our community a better place for everyone, including the less fortunate among us.

I have many highlights to cherish after 34 years of active Navy service. I served in 13 pay-grades, at 21 duty stations around the world, and I filled 43 positions from basic acoustic analyst to commanding officer responsible for 1,800 people.

I suppose the biggest highlights of my career involved the people I served with. Many became family to me and remain good friends to this day.

I am the director of the Navy’s Integrated Undersea Surveillance System Caesar Alumni Association which consists of approximately 800 members. I coordinate an annual newsletter, membership rolls, a website, and a large reunion in Norfolk at the Waterside Marriott every five years.

Each holiday season a close friend of mine, a retired Navy captain who heads up a nonprofit outreach to migrant worker families on the Eastern Shore and collects filled Christmas stockings for children ages 2-12. I coordinate an effort to assist by gathering filled stockings and cash donations to assist with her effort. This year my friends will provide more than 60 stockings and approximately $700 in donations.

OUTSIDE THE MILITARY:

Those that separate from the military very likely continue in professions that are service-oriented – it’s in our blood after a career of doing it. My advice would be to broaden your aperture for prospective opportunities and do so to points outside your comfort zone. While the technical details of any given job in a leadership or service position may change, the core tenants of leadership and service do not.

Often times a person leaving the military will have specific positions in mind; be sure to listen for opportunities from areas you hadn’t considered. They might be the most rewarding time of your life.

ABOUT HELPING THE COMMUNITY:

My role as Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana Air Show director enabled me to reach out to deserving groups and organizations to provide unparalleled access to the air show for special needs groups, veterans, senior citizens and others. Each year I developed a theme for the air show to highlight some of those groups. In 2014, the air show advocated on behalf of Navy Wounded Warriors. In 2015 we recognized the service, valor and sacrifice of our Vietnam veterans. And this year we forged a groundbreaking partnership with Virginia Beach City Public schools and created the world’s largest “Outdoors science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) Laboratory” and had every 5th grader in Virginia Beach attend the practice air show on Sep. 9. We hosted 5,500 students and 1,200 educators and chaperones to immerse the students in displays focused on STEM. This effort was lauded by the governor’s Secretary of Technology, the Office of Naval Research and Virginia Beach Schools Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence as one of the best outreach event in their respective histories.

Every year at the Air Show, an event occurs that never gets any attention but perfectly crystalizes why we put so much effort into the event. One year, we had a skydiver perform that had lost both legs below the knee in a mishap. He parachuted down on his prosthetic legs right in front of the Special Needs seating area and engaged a young boy behind the crowd fence. We looked over at what he was doing and he lifted the boy over the fence to talk more directly. We were amazed to see that the boy was also wearing prosthetics and had lost both legs below the knee. Truly a remarkable moment.

Also each year, we partner with The Noblemen – a local group of philanthropic businessmen that pledge to “do good works” for children with special needs, medical issues or in local hospice. We afford them on the Friday practice-show day the use of our large “Executive Squadron Chalet,” a 1,000 seat chalet that the public purchases tickets to on the weekend. The Noblemen then energize their membership to provide a day at the air show for children and their families from St. Mary’s Home, Cerebral Palsy of Virginia, Toby’s Dream Foundation, Young Life Capernaum and others, providing food, beverage and gift bags for all children. We’ve also incorporated support for the Navy Exceptional Family Members, Navy Wounded Warriors and Gold Star Mothers. All are treated to a fantastic day at the air show with front row seats and visits by the military and civilian pilots and the Blue Angels.

This effort is one of the most meaningful and impactful community engagement projects I’ve ever been associated with and make all the hard work definitely worth it.

MILITARY HIGHLIGHTS:

Navy // Commander // Served 1988-2008

Most of my service was as a naval aviator flying the F-14 Tomcat. As you may imagine, my entire career in that regard was exhilarating and challenging. There are hundreds of “sea stories” that I could recount but space precludes them. Overall, I amassed almost 2,000 hours and 575 carrier landings flying the Tomcat and look back with great fondness on the time spent flying what we called “The Big Fighter.” More importantly, the officers and Sailors I served with were – to a man and woman – the best people I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I deployed aboard USS Nimitz (CVN-68) to Iraq twice and was stationed in Japan to deploy aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) a number of times.

During that last flying tour, I developed diabetes and was told I would never be able to fly again. While it came a severe shock to have to give up the job I loved, I decided to continue to try and serve my Navy and my Sailors and find a way to contribute. I accepted orders back to NAS Oceana and took great pride in being able add value to the Tomcat community and to make a difference in the lives of Sailors.

When I retired in 2008, I was serving as the director of the NAS Oceana Air Show and had been since 2004. That position enabled me to conduct engaging and meaningful outreach throughout the community and I valued that opportunity. Accordingly, I was afforded to continue that role as a civil servant and remain in the Hampton Roads area, one of the finest places in the country to raise a family.

ABOUT HELPING THE COMMUNITY:

I volunteered with City of Chesapeake, The Mission Continues, Volunteer Hampton Roads, Urban League, Food Bank SHR, Faith Works, Veteran’s HomeFront, City of Portsmouth, STOP Inc., United Way, Old Dominion University, Housing Authority, Disabled American Veterans, Chesapeake Winter Shelter, Norfolk Winter Shelter, Union Mission, and ForKids. I volunteered with these organizations to learn more about homelessness, how to help them out of homelessness and how to engage the community through volunteerism.

FROM HIS NOMINATOR, BROOKE CONWAY: Antione’s transition from the military into the civilian world left him unemployed and struggling to get by. Through hard times, he continued to volunteer for others in need through the City of Chesapeake. He also spent many years assisting The Mission Continues and ForKids, before becoming the president and founder of his own nonprofit called Veteran’s HomeFront. He is now a widely recognized strategic advisor on the issue of homelessness. Antione Hines exhibits passion, commitment and a wealth of knowledge and experience. Veteran’s HomeFront is vastly growing throughout the Hampton Roads community and recently partnered with the United Way Mission Continues. The goals are to bridge the gaps of transitioning veterans by connecting them to the full continuum of resources available, including vet to vet programs, housing placement, employment opportunities, recreational activities, and other essential human services with a cohesive strategic plan for the delivery of services.

HomeFront’s main objectives are: 1) Ending veterans’ homelessness 2) Reducing the number of veterans’ suicides 3) Creating a supportive, embracing, community ready to accept our homeless and hurting veterans during their life transitions.

MILITARY HIGHLIGHTS:

I was a submarine nuclear electrician. I was the educational services officer on my boat helping numerous Sailors work towards getting their degrees. I was the health promotions director on Naval Station Norfolk. I was honored as Sailor of the Quarter. I was recommended by my command, captain and admiral to become an officer.

ADVICE FOR TRANSITIONING TROOPS:

Get involved with an organization you passionate about. Get involved with an organization that you could bring your family along with. Get involved with an organization that can teach you about the community.

TIES TO HAMPTON ROADS:

I decided to stay in Hampton Roads since my family lives in New York and my exwive’s family lives in South Carolina. One of the main reasons is that my daughter and I started a non-profit organization to help homeless and hurting veterans. This was after, during, and becoming unemployed for three years, divorced and homeless for a year and a half. This is a reason for my passion to help the homeless and hurting, since I was one of the them due to a bad transition out of the military.

OUTSIDE THE MILITARY:

Without a doubt, my volunteer work. It’s what I live for. My retirement check keeps the bills paid so I can concentrate on giving back to a community, especially the military, that I love so much.

MILITARY HIGHLIGHTS:

I’ve had eight deployments throughout my career. None more rewarding than the two I spent on the ground in Iraq. Those two happened to be my last two deployments. Both trips were to Baghdad where I worked on the Land-based Phalanx Weapons system – the Army version of the Navy’s CIWS system.

The system worked very well and saved countless lives. It felt amazing knowing that I had a small part in keeping the base safe.

TIES TO HAMPTON ROADS:

Over 16 of my 20 years in the Navy was spent right here in Hampton Roads.

A lot of my friends are here, some still active duty. Once I retired, I quickly realized I would miss this area too much if I left. All branches of the armed services are represented around here which lets me keep up with all that is going on in today’s military. So much to do and see around here too with so much of our nation’s history only a short drive away.

ADVICE FOR TRANSITIONING TROOPS: Just get out there and do it! There are so many ways to keep serving. Your church, the homeless, the hungry, homeless animals, and the military are just some of the areas you could focus your time and energy. Find something that you are passionate about then get up off your ass and get to work!

ABOUT HELPING THE COMMUNITY:

Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia – this is the organization that started it all. It got me addicted to volunteer service. No one should go hungry, especially children. I started out with numerous volunteer duties at the foodbank. I helped out with food distribution, both at the foodbank and on Mobile Pantry shifts. That lasted for a few months before I got the opportunity to be a delivery driver for the Backpack Program. I recently started my third school year of delivering backpacks to Norfolk area elementary schools.

Children aren’t going to learn anything if they are hungry.

Norfolk Animal Care Center (NACC) – my love of animals led me to start volunteering here. I wanted to help take care of all the animals that come through the center doors until they head to their forever homes. Makes me feel great knowing I’ve helped so many animals know there are people out there who will love them and are willing to take them home. For just over two years now, I’ve had a regular Friday shift of caring for all of the cats and other small mammals. I’ve also represented NACC at numerous area adoption events informing the public about all of the wonderful animals, staff, and volunteers at the center.

USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia – I had to volunteer with an organization that has supported me and others so much throughout my career. Currently I have weekly volunteer shifts at both USO centers on Naval Station Norfolk. I started at the AMC Terminal location and recently picked up a weekly shift at the Building J-50 location. I’ve also volunteered at numerous special events for the USO. It’s my honor to give back to and help all of the active-duty service members and their families.

FROM HIS NOMINATOR, CHELSEA MORAN-LYNCH:

One example, of many, of how Joseph has gone above and beyond is certainly with his work for the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia. One of the many things he does is volunteer weekly for the USO at the AMC terminal on Naval Station Norfolk.

In addition to volunteering every single Tuesday, he is also the first to jump at the chance to volunteer for any deployments or homecomings we have at the airport. Joseph does whatever it takes to make sure that the service members who walk through our USO doors are given what they need to make their experience as pleasant as possible, even if that means staying with them for upwards of 10 hours at a time. Joseph also is one of the few willing to volunteer for overnight shifts, or deployments leaving at the crack of dawn – Joseph is on it. In fact, with one center alone he has already volunteered over 1,000 hours in just 2 years, which is quite an incredible accomplishment.

ADVICE FOR TRANSITIONING TROOPS:

Don’t be a “problem admirer” but get in there and be part of the solution – our communities need our leadership, aptitude in getting things done and the knowledge and experience of our careers.

OUTSIDE THE MILITARY:

Mentoring Harry Dews, 8 years; Langston Scott, 8 years; and now Tim Washington, 2 years, in the Team UP mentoring program brings me a great deal of satisfaction daily.

These young men have made me appreciate the simple things in life – friendship, respect for others, and being outdoors – and the realization that with a little help, mentoring, or by just being there from someone who cares, is priceless. // As “Bruce The Moose,” I read to 3-4 year olds at a local elementary school. The looks on the faces of these kids is heartwarming. // While employed with Oasis Opportunity Center in Portsmouth, helping homeless men and women find jobs was an overwhelming reason to come to work every day.

MILITARY HIGHLIGHTS:

During Desert Storm, I was the customer service officer for the Navy Supply Center, Norfolk. I felt a personal responsibility that the ships deploying for the Middle East were fully loaded to ensure that our front-line personnel had what they needed to support their combat operations. They had volunteered for their military service and deserved the best logistical support – food, spare parts, and fuel – which could be provided.

During the Clinton administration, I was Navy’s food service officer. The White House mess and the President’s personal mess were manned by Navy mess specialists. It was always an experience to visit our finest at the White House.

TIES TO HAMPTON ROADS:

Having grown up in Portsmouth and raising my daughters in Virginia Beach, during my Navy career, my friends, family and colleagues – especially my mother, Carmen – helped shape my values, work ethic, civic responsibility to give back and my passionate advocacy for those in need. Armed with these “tools” helping others in Hampton Roads and staying home just became part of my DNA.

• Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia (CCEVA), vice chairman: I wanted to be a part of the faith-based “solution” of helping the most disadvantaged in Hampton Roads – CCEVA helps those of all faiths and backgrounds.

• Team UP Mentoring: For past nine years, I have personally mentored three young boys on the values of respect for others and pride in themselves.

• Friends of the Portsmouth Juvenile Courts: I wanted to help those young adults who are in trouble in the community and courts and need guidance to avoid bad influences.

• Safety Town of Portsmouth, vice chairman: I wanted to assist in the education all Portsmouth public school students on daily safety practices of getting to and at school and about potential dangers in their neighbor, through collaboration with public safety leadership and the community.

• Ryan Club, vice chairman: A faith-based group advocating and funding parochial education.

• Bank On, Portsmouth liaison: I advocate for financial planning and budgeting for those in credit stress.

• Newport News Rotary: I wanted to be a part of service projects that benefit the community .

ADVICE FOR TRANSITIONING TROOPS:

Time is the most precious gift you can give because each of us has a limited and unknown quantity. Spend your time wisely by volunteering in activities that support your passions.

OUTSIDE THE MILITARY:

Serving on Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITZ), the committee strongly recommended that the secretary of defense open all closed units, occupational specialties, positions, and training to service members who meet the requisite qualification, regardless of gender. In December 2015, the secretary of defense lifted all restrictions regarding women serving in combat positions. In recognition of my service, I was presented the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service.

MILITARY HIGHLIGHTS:

During my tours of duty at the National Defense University, I was privileged to participate in the education and professional development of the future senior military leaders from the U.S. as well as our allies from across the globe. This education experience is important to national security because it provides an opportunity for friendships to be developed with our allies based on trust, understanding and mutual respect. For my collaboration with the French Center for Higher Education in Armaments, I was awarded the French Legion d’Honneur by the French Minister of Defense.

TIES TO HAMPTON ROADS:

To be close to my husband’s parents to assist them as they navigate their senior years.

ABOUT HELPING THE COMMUNITY:

As I was retiring from the Marine Corps, I faced a life-threatening disease which caused me to reevaluate my priorities. I decided then to dedicate myself to activities I felt passionate about, to include community service, education, national defense, and foreign policy.

• July 2011 – June 2014: Board of Directors member for the World Affairs Council of Greater Hampton Roads; vice president, June 2012 – 2014.

• August 2011 – December 2014: Board of Directors member for the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia; chair, February 2012 – 2014.

• October 2011 – Present: Military Economic Development Advisory Committee (MEDAC) member for the City of Virginia Beach; appointed by the mayor.

• June 2012 – June 2016: Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Service: appointed by the secretary of defense. Appointed as chair, September 2014 – 2016.

• July 2012 – December 2014: Board of Trustees member for Fort Monroe Authority; appointed by the governor of Virginia.

• July 2013 – Present: Board of Visitors member for the Virginia Military Institute (VMI); appointed by the governor of Virginia.

FROM HER NOMINATOR, CORY BELKOV: After retiring from the U.S. Marine Corps, Lt. Gen. Fran Wilson became a board member of the USO Hampton Roads, and the following year she became chairman of the board (COB).

She served two years as COB for the USO, in addition to serving on the board of MEDAC. She was later selected to serve on DACOWITZ and became president of DACOWITZ. Lt. Gen. Wilson continues to serve on the VMI Board of Visitors and MEDAC, and continues to serve as a positive role model for young military personnel whenever she encounters them.

She was a regular volunteer at the USO of Hampton Roads Holiday Party at JEB Little Creek, and volunteered in other ways for the organization. She continues to appear as a guest speaker, pro-bono at various military and non-military events throughout the year. Lt. Gen. Fran Wilson is the sister of Coast Guard Rear Adm. Mary O’Donnell, the only sisters to actively serve as flag officers at the same time.
