Marines with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 162 participated in a joint service troop insertion with soldiers from the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, Dec. 7. The Marines were tasked with the flying to Fort Bragg, Va., to transport soldiers to a landing zone where they would continue with combat patrol training. “The success of this flight is dependent on the safe pick-up and transport of the soldiers to the specified destination,” said Capt. Creighton Murrieta, VMM-162 MV-22B Osprey pilot as well as Coordinator to Naval Air Training Operating Procedures and Standardization for VMM-162. After normal preparations for the flight, the Ospreys, took off from Marine Corps Air Station New River for Fort Bragg. They made their way over to the Fort Bragg area
at a low altitude, coming down right over the tree line, into a clear area prepared for the Ospreys’ landing. After arriving at the destination, Sgt. Wesley. Johnson, VMM-162 Osprey crew chief, made his way to the soldiers who were waiting in the thick woods to board the aircraft. “The troops were lined up in the brush in sticks of twelve,” said Murrieta. “After landing, each aircraft made sure to send a crew chief to brief the soldiers on proper safety and making sure they were strapped down during the flight.” After making his way to the soldiers, Johnson made sure to stress the important details of strapping into the five-point harness and the safe way to place their pack so as to not become a hazard during the flight. After the safety brief, the soldiers, in two columns of twelve, made their way to the Ospreys for departure. After liftoff, it was apparent that the soldiers, al-
though part of an airborne unit, had never witnessed the maneuverability of the Marine Corps’ Osprey. The soldiers gave each other looks of amazement as the Osprey that had just flown in like an airplane took off straight up into the air like a helicopter; even more so when the Osprey changed to airplane mode and flew faster, applying g-forces to the passengers aboard the aircraft. After making the roller coaster of a short flight to Siemens Army Airfield, the soldiers departed the aircraft and made their way down the flight line, where they would continue on with the exercise at hand. During this time, the pilots of the Osprey met up with the Army commanderT:5.6875”overseeing the exercise to give him a brief rundown of the success of the transport. “Overall as a whole the flight was a success,” said Pfc. Miguel Sandoval, VMM-162 Osprey crew chief. “We set out to get these guys safely to Siemens Army Airfield and that’s exactly what we did.”
