Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 461 and 464 Marines worked together to ensure combat readiness during a night operation flight, Oct. 3.

The flight was designed to simulate a combat environment at night for co-pilots of HMH-461 that are coming up through the CH-53E syllabus to earn their division leader certification.

A division leader is able to lead flights of three to four aircraft, said Capt. Jeremy Williams, HMH-464 pilot.

HMH-461 Marines provided two aircraft and HMH-464 provided the third.

“We worked together to enhance training for both squadrons. There was no way for just us to do it and there was no way for them to do it with just them,” said Capt. Justin Smith, HMH-461 pilot.

“The Marines flew the simulated tactical mission at night taking a platoon size element from Camp Davis to insert at landing zone

Bluebird in attempt to capture or kill insurgents located in the area,” said Smith.

After the insertion was complete, the Marines were to provide extracts or casualty evacuations if needed.

“As soon as we took off, we got an update saying the Marines were taking contact in the original pickup zone and second platoon had disengaged the enemy and made westward movement to an alternate landing zone,” said Smith.

The series of updates required the co-pilots to change the entire plan on the fly.

“We knew we weren’t going to Camp Davis. The only people who did not were the copilots to make the training more realistic,” said Smith.

At the new pickup zone, the co-pilots were told they had to add a machine-gun squad from weapons platoon and increase the number of Marines from 48 to 60. Because of this, they had to immediately change the plan again.

“We use all these friction points so the copilots and the aircrew getting their training have to work as a crew developing new cours-

es of action on the fly and executing them safely,” said Smith.

With the simulated insertion occurring at night, the flight became more of a challenge do to the use of night vision goggles.

“Instead of having all your peripheral vision you have during the day, you are looking through a tube so it requires harder work to maintain situational awareness,” said Williams.

For both squadrons, working and training together provided an even greater amount of training and experience.

“It is always good to get the opportunity to work with the other squadrons. We train a lot as a squadron flying together, but any time we can go brief with another squadron and interact with those pilots is a good experience,” said Williams.

“It is really critical for the HMH community to work together because there is such a shortage of aircraft. To get the training required to be combat ready, we have to team up and the individual squadrons have to make sacrifices to help out other squadrons,” said Smith. “We do that extremely well because we

More airports offer streamlined security Amaani Lyle

Active-duty service members and other eligible travelers now have more opportunities to use streamlined security check-ins, as Transportation Security Administration officials have added two more airports to the program.

Eligible passengers can enter a separate security lane at participating airports without removing their shoes, light outerwear and belts, and they don’t need to remove their laptops and 3-1-1 compliant liquids or gels from carry-on luggage. Washington Dulles International Airport in Chantilly, Va., and Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, N.C., now participate in the initiative, which allows eligible passengers to volunteer information about themselves to expedite their airport experience

through pre-screening.

Since March, TSA has partnered with the Defense Department to more efficiently screen active-duty service members. Dulles and Charlotte Douglas join Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Va. in offering the option.

“TSA remains committed to working with our partners across the aviation community to provide travelers the most effective security in the most efficient way,” TSA Administrator John S. Pistole said.

“Building on the success of the pilot programs at Ronald Reagan Washington National and SeattleTacoma International, we look forward to expanding our [pre-check] screening process to additional airports for active duty service members.”

TSA officers manning the special security lane will scan presented

common access cards to determine eligibility for expedited screening, and eligible service members need not be in uniform, officials said.

Additionally at both airports, select Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and US Airways frequent travelers and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Trusted Traveler program members also are eligible to receive expedited screening benefits for domestic travel.

TSA will always incorporate random and unpredictable security measures throughout the airport and no individual is guaranteed expedited screening, officials said.

Grants help military children Donna Miles

The Department of Defense Education Activity director urged recipients of the 2012 educational grant program today to push the envelope in developing programs that ultimately will benefit all military schoolchildren.

Marilee Fitzgerald opened the 2012 DODEA grant kickoff meeting here by recognizing the challenges children face as they move between schools when their military parents change duty stations.

As these children make physical and emotional adjustments to as many as eight schools between kindergarten and high school graduation, Fitzgerald said, they shouldn’t have to lose out on educational opportunities in the process.

“That is what this grant program is about,” she told teachers and school officials from across the country selected to receive the 2012 grants. “It is about extending those opportunities to help our children continue their academic careers so they are not disrupted.”

Since 2009, DODEA has awarded 186 grants totaling $214 million. About 80 percent of the grants have gone to support STEM -- science, technology, education and mathematics -- projects. Others have funded foreign language and advanced-placement programs and student-support services.

This year, the Defense Department added extra funding to the program, enabling DODEA to award more than $50 million in grants to 44 recipients.

Fitzgerald called that measure, particularly in light of Pentagon budget constraints, a testament to DOD leaders’ commitment to military families and children.

“They said, ‘Do you know what? These budget cuts are not going to come on the backs of our children,’” she told the 2012 grant recipients.

The DODEA educational grant program helps to ensure that military children enter a level playing field in the educational system, Fitzgerald said. “This grant is about saying everybody gets a shot,” she said.

“Our military families make many, many sacrifices on behalf of this nation each and every day,” she told the grant recipients. “And we are committed -- as I am sure you are -- … to ensuring that the education of their children will not be among their sacrifices.”

As they return to their districts and advance their programs, Fitzgerald urged the educators to explore new educational concepts so they can discover those that prove to be the most effective and promising.

“You are the incubators. That’s what I see you as,” she told them.

“The goal is to try to find the absolute best programs … that will have a powerful impact on our children.”

Those lessons, she said, will benefit other children throughout the military and the U.S. educational system. “We want to prove something by [these projects],” she added. “We want you to help us find something that can be extrapolated to all our schools.”

Kathy Schofield and Donna Wethington attended the kickoff meeting, representing the Clay County School District in Green Cove Springs, Fla., which received a $2.3 million grant last year and a $675,000 grant this year.

The funds have enabled the district to expand the STEM coursework it provides to its students, many whose parents serve at nearby Naval Air Station Jacksonville, they explained. It also enabled them to

Knights vs. 8th Marines ends in a draw Lance Cpl. Jorden M. Wells ROTOVUE Staff

The Marine Corps Air Station New River Knights battled on the gridiron against the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune 8th Marines, Oct. 3.

Midway through the first quarter, the New River Knights almost scored a touchdown but could not break through the 8th Marines’ defense. They attempted a field goal but it was low and to the right.

“The first quarter was extremely slow,” said, Derek Lundy, offensive and defensive lineman for the New River Knights. “If we want to pull this one off, we will have to step up the running game and the offensive line will have to keep up the good blocking and continue to give that initial push off the ball so our back can move the ball down field.”

The second quarter was off to a good start with a Knights sack against 8th Marines’ quarterback early on.

Further into the second quarter while blocking for the back running the ball said, Zachary Hines, offensive and defensive lineman for the Knights, hyper-extended

his elbow, taking him out of the game. A few downs later, 8th Marines fumbled the football and the Knights were there to jump on it, resulting in a turnover of possession.

“For the first half, our defense has played really solid,” said Hines. “Our offense is having difficulty getting insync with one another and if we want to put points on the board, our offensive line will have to stay low with their blocks and allow our back to run the ball.”

Third quarter was a back and forth battle with possessions. Later in the third quarter, 8th Marines had an interception against the Knights.

The fourth quarter was ushered in with a fumble recovery for the Knights, almost resulting in a touchdown.

“I thought that Nick Merkushin was the most valuable player of the night,” said William Stankowski, Knights’ head coach. “He played everywhere on the field and even filled in for Hines as center after he got injured.”

“Our defense really saved us from a loss last night,” said Stanowski. “They played through, blocking three field goals and stopping the 8th Marines in their tracks inside the five-yard line, preventing the touchdown.”

Golf scramble raises money for charity Pfc. Cameron Payne ROTOVUE Staff

Marines aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River participated in the Marine Corps Community Services Fall Golf Scramble which also doubles as the 2012 Combined Federal Campaign event.

The event hosted at the Jacksonville Country club consisted of 21 teams of four, each team having a minimum game handicap of 45 allowing for the teams to be matched equally.

The event also gave the participants an opportunity to win

$10,000 by sinking a hole-in-one during their 18-hole tournament.

Before it began, professional golfer Lance Strinkland held a golf clinic and offered swing advice to golfers during the tournament.

“I don’t want to take them out of their comfort zone,” said Strickland. “I just want to give them a slight adjustment here and there to keep them on the fairway and to keep the event fun.”

The event also allowed the participants to buy mulligans for five dollars, allowing them to retry tougher shots, or to get their team a little close to hole if they were unsatisfied with their previous attempts to get on the green.

Captain Leslie Harkness said the event was rewarding because it allowed Marines to come out and enjoy a day of golf while also knowing that the proceeds of the event went towards the CFC. Nancy Stankowsky, the athletics director for MCCS New River said that she does not remember how far back the golf tournament goes in terms of how long MCCS has been hosting it, but as long

as she has been in charge of it, the scramble has been a success.

“Our job is to support, Marines and sailors as well as their families,” said Stankowsky. “Events like these are morale boosters, and a great way to have a little down time and to reduce stress.”

At the end of the tournament Potter’s Putters consisting of Kim Burgin, Jeff Wood, Dac Carpenter, and Willie Miller were victorious for the second year in a row.

“Golf is a game of ups and downs,” said Burgin. “Today is all about fun and relaxation: laughing and having fun with your friends is the most important thing to great game of golf.”

The event closed with Marines and civilians eating and enjoying each other’s company as well as crossing their fingers in hopes of winning door prizes.

“The event has been very successful,” said Stankowsky at the end of the scramble. “A day full of Marines and civilians building camaraderie is what today is all about.”

The Marine Corps Air Station New Rivers soccer team met Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune’s 8th Regiment soccer team in an match that ended in a 2-0 win for the air station team bringing their record to 3-0-1.

Before the game the air station players were confident, said Cpl. Yirak Seth, quality assurance clerk with Marine Air Control Squadron 2.

“Within the first ten minutes I could tell we were calm and collected,” said Seth. “We controlled the ball for about 85 percent of the game.”

The game started off with New River’s team putting together a string of passes and allowing each player to get the ball. The players moving from left to right trying to stretch the defense, allowing for the forwards to make a run through and create chances up the center for the midfielders to play balls over the top for them to capitalize.

The Knights controlled the play of the game, achieving their first goal less than 15 minutes into the game off of a perfectly placed free kick by Sgt. Freddy Casteneda, Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 167 flightline mechanic, placing the ball low and right of the reach of the keeper’s left side putting the score at 1-0 and placing the momentum of the game in New River’s favor.

“I knew that shot was mine to be taken,” said Castaneda.

“I’ve been practicing that shot all week, so I just kept my head down, kept the ball low, and it was successful.”

The air station team led the game 1-0 at halftime, and after

resuming play, tested the 8th Regiment keeper with a low but blocked shot by Cpl. Sam Bulger, ground support equipment technician with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 26.

The game went on with highlights coming a little later with a narrow save on a wellplaced corner kick, and the sun playing a factor on visibility by the New River keeper, keeping the game at 1-0.

In the second half of the game, Cpl. Carlos Ocampo, Marine Aircraft Group 29 supply clerk, put away the air station team’s second goal of the game off of a hard shot the 8th regiment goal keeper failed to clear completely, and securing the victory for New River.

Cpl. Jeanluc Mbonayo, tour room supervisor for MALS-26 and acting coach for the game, said afterwards the team did well, but there is always room for improvement.

Mbonayo looked forward to the games yet to come, acknowledging a challenging schedule in their way.

“Our next game is going to be more challenging judging from the talent of the other teams we’ve seen so far,” said Mbonayo “But I’m more than confident that our guys are ready for whatever team gets placed before them.”

“I didn’t have to do much yelling with the guys in control of most of the game,” said Mbonayo. “As the game went on our passing and communication was better, with the guys taking the game to the other team. But this was warm up.

Our guys are confident and next game; we’ll show the other team what we really have.”

Many Marines know the more famous battles the Marine Corps has been involved in over its 237 years of existence, but many often overlook the Marine Corps’ involvement in John Brown’s raid on the arsenal at Harpers Ferry during the year before the Civil War started.

In October of 1859, John Brown, a militant abolitionist born in Connecticut, and 21 of his fellow supporters left the farmhouse Brown had rented about five miles north of Harpers Ferry, Va. When Brown and his men arrived at the town on Oct. 17, they captured several townsfolk and attempted to seize the federal arsenal located within the town according to the History and Museums Division Headquarters Marine Corps.

had hoped through the raid’s success other abolitionists and slaves could fight against slavery with the captured weapons.

Brown and his men first met resistance against the local militia. A company of militia seized the bridge, blocking the only escape route. Brown and his men took refuge in the engine house of the arsenal along with the prisoners they had captured.

The protection they received from hiding in the engine room did not last long.

Later that day, Marines under the command of then Union Army Col. Robert E. Lee arrived to put an end to the attack.

When Lee arrived, he asked Brown to surrender, however Brown continued to fight from the engine room.

Lee then ordered the Marines to break through the barricaded doors leading into the room. The Marines beat the

doors open with sledge hammers and battering rams they had constructed and quickly breached the engine room, killing many of the raiders and capturing Brown after only three minutes.

Throughout the entire raid, Brown’s men killed four people, and wounded nine. Ten of Brown’s men were also killed, according HMDHMC Brown was quickly placed on trial and charged with murder, slave insurrection and treason against the state of Virginia. Brown was sentenced to death and hanged Dec. 2, 1859.

According to the HMDHMC only one of the Marines present was killed during the attack. Pvt. Luke Quinn, an Irish immigrant who enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1855, was shot as he and his fellow Marines assaulted the engine room.

In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. We all have heard this rhyme at one point of our education on when Christopher Columbus set sail to discover the Americas. But what most people do not know, is that he actually tried to discover is a faster trading route to the “Eastern World.”

At the time, it was a common belief that that the world was flat and if someone would sail off too far, they would fall off the edge of the world.

Columbus took the risk to push the knowledge of the world to a greater height.

“If it was not for him, the Americas would not be what they are today,” said Christopher Mullins, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band musician. “Russia or China

would have taken the trip from the other end and changed the way we were settled.”

The King of Spain John II wanted a faster way of exporting his goods to the Eastern World so they could make more of a profit. The king financed the trip and Columbus quickly set sails.

He set off into the open ocean with three ships. They were named the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria, according to history.com.

He landed in on one of the Caribbean Islands on October 12, 1492.

He called the natives Indians because he thought that he accidently landed in India.

He went from island to island looking for riches and spices to take back to the King of Spain, but he did not find much of wealth. He resupplied and then returned to Spain with nothing more than the knowledge of a new world.

More importantly, he mapped the trade wind to make it easier for other ships to return to the continent more expediently. This saved time and recourses for future visits, according to earthguide. ucsd.edu He left behind 40 sailors to settle what is now known as the island of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

He returned to the newly discovered continent several time, expanding the knowledge of what we know now as South America. He made it all the way to Panama and Honduras.

His legacy left a lasting impression that went on to inspire future explorers to map and conquest the New World.

Countries across North America and South America, In October, honor the commitment shown by a man who was will to risk his life for the exploration of uncharted water.

With the end of summer, the Onslow County Fair kicked off the beginning of fall. Marines and their families as well as Onslow County citizens continued an old tradition of going to the county fair, Oct. 1-6.

The Onslow County Fair has been going for 58 years and still draws a crowd to see the attractions, try the rides and the eat classic Americana food.

“Every time I come to the fair, I always make sure to get a funnel cake. Its not a fair without one,” jokingly said Jacob White of Jacksonville, N.C. The fair was held at the American Legion Building on the Onslow County Fairgrounds in Jacksonville.

The fair had many things to offer such as games, live entertainment, fireworks, food and vendors of all kind.

“I enjoy going to the fair because it is a great way to get out and have fun with your friends without having to go far or spend very much,” said Lance Cpl. Chris Garner, 1st Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, Head-

quarters Battery, data network specialist.

The fair also provides residents and the local 4-H Club the chance to show off their livestock, goods and skills in hopes of earning a blue first place ribbon.

With over 30 rides and attractions, from bumper cars, ferris wheels and fun-houses provided by Amusement of America there was something for everyone’s thrill-seeker side.

“My favorite ride was the ‘Zero Gravity,’” said Garner. “That’s the ride where you stand up and the whole thing spins really fast as it angles up and it pushes your back against the wall.”

There was even a circus act performed nightly and a human cannonball show to amazed the visitors.

For some families it was the first time for their children to ever visit the fair.

“Our son David had never been to a fair before,” said Bethany White, Jacob’s wife.

“His eyes lit up when he saw the lights and the ferris wheel.”

“All the similar sights, sounds and smells remind of me of the fairs that we have back home,” said Garner.

During the week of fun and celebration, thousands of Marines and their families and the residents of Onslow County came

out and showed their support while having a good time reliving and creating memories and traditions that will continue for a lifetime.

“It was a great time to share with my family and show my son something that he will remember and look back on fondly,” said Jacob.

Forkful, a new locally owned restaurant, opened its doors in Jacksonville, N.C., July 28. This health-conscious ‘real food’ restaurant has a slightly different menu and approach than other restaurants in the area.

“We let our guests design their entire menu from scratch,” said Lisa Davila, Forkful’s owner.

The concept of Forkful is simple: guests decide whether they want a salad, rice dish, burrito or pasta dish, and then fill it with any number of ingredients.

Customers can choose one main form of protein, either sauteed shrimp, marinated Greek-style chicken, pulled pork or chimichurri steak, and then as many other ingredients as they want.

“We have more than 20 other ingredients to choose from,” said Davila. “We wanted a place in Jacksonville where people have a lot of good options to eat. I was sick of getting a burger and fries every time we wanted a quick meal.”

Some of the ingredients are what you would expect like fresh spinach or tomatoes, but many of the others would be hard to find on any other burrito, such as gingered string-beans, seaForkful, a new restaurant in Jacksonville, offers a build-your-own entree with a variety of healthy options. “A lot of people say that I’m opening a health food restaurant, but really, I’m just opening a delicious fresh food restaurant, that happens to be healthy,” said Davila. “We make everything from scratch except for the pasta and wraps.”

Davila said she opened Forkful with the local Marines in mind.

“I’ve lived in this area for the past four years, and I’ve gotten to know a lot of Marines,” said Davila. “I think this a great place for them to get a lot of food that will give them energy and help them live a healthy life.”

Davila added that she suspects many Marines already eat there either before or after they workout because of the large amounts of protein and healthy carbohydrates in their food.

“I was impressed with the variety of healthy options there,” said Lance Cpl. Eric Bergstrom, a ground support equipment electrician with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 29. “It’s nice to go out to eat and feel good about it afterwards. That doesn’t happen at most places.”

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. This year’s theme is “Keepin’ Our Homes Combat Free.” This is a real challenge. Several questions arise out of this theme. The first is whose responsibility is it to keep domestic violence out of our homes? The quick answer is yours. Domestic violence, combat in the home, will stop when we make it unacceptable.

Far too many people ignore signs of domestic violence involving their friends or family members.

It is hard for people to decide to get involved. In our society we believe in privacy and far too many of us see domestic violence as a family matter unless there are serious injuries involved. We hesitate and quiet our consciences by rationalizing that he or she must not care if they continue to stick around.

The facts are very different. Most men and women who are involved in a domestic violence situation would like to leave. There are a variety of reasons that they do not. Some believe that the children will be better off in a two parent home.

Some are afraid to leave because their spouse or partner has threatened to take the children away.

Others have been threatened with further or more severe violence if they attempt to leave. If the spouse/victim does not work they may fear that they will have no money or no place to live for themselves or their children. Some stay out of

religious beliefs or fear of family disapproval. Many continue to hope that things will get better. Being a victim of domestic violence can be like being in the middle of a war zone.

As with most wars there are a variety of tactics that can be considered domestic violence. Most of us are aware of physical violence. There is sexual violence consisting of unwanted sexual acts up to and including rape. Psychological or emotional violence often goes hand in hand with physical violence. Psychological violence can be threats of suicide, custody fights, or even forcing a victim to do things against his or her will. Many people don’t see destructions of property or harming pets as domestic violence, but it is. It is way of saying, “See what I can do. You’re next!”

All victims are deserving of help. What can you do to help? First, you can listen without judging.

No one who has not been involved in a destructive relationship can know how hard it is. The decision to leave is not an easy one. It often involves children, extended family, property and even pets. Most leave several times before the final time. Leaving can be dangerous. When the abuser has nothing left to lose he or she may become more violent in an effort to stop the spouse from going.

Friends and family members can also help by offering help. To leave a victim must have somewhere to go. Help the victim find a place to live.

Raise awareness by wearing or displaying a purple ribbon during October. Attend the candlelight vigil Oct. 24 at 6 p.m., at the New River Chapel.

In the eastern division firearm season opens Oct. 13, and will draw a great number of hunters to the woods.

For Marines that wish to hunt aboard the air station, there are 13 designated hunting areas aboard the air station where hunting is permitted, said David Rogers, MCAS New River game warden.

Hunters must have attended a state hunter’s safety course in order to obtain a state hunting license. North Carolina does recognize other states’ hunter safety courses.

To register and find locations of a North Carolina hunter’s safety course, one can go to NCWRC website at http:// www.ncwildlife.org.

“Once the course is

completed or if the hunter has already completed a hunter’s safety course, they must purchase a North Carolina big game hunting license that can be purchased at the Marine Corps Exchange aboard the air station in the electronics section,” said Rogers.

To hunt on base, they must go to the Camp Lejeune conservation law enforcement website and set up a profile and account where they must apply for the permit.

A hunting permit cost $15 a year and a hunting and fishing permit cost $20 a year.

“Once they apply for a permit, if they have never hunted on base before on base, a 43-question hunter safety test will pop up,” said Rogers. “About 70 percent of the test has to do with hunting

and safety regulations, but about 30 percent specifically has to do with hunting aboard MCB Lejeune and MCAS New River.”

On Camp Lejeune’s conservation website, the base order governing hunting and fishing is available to use during the hunter safety test.

“After they complete that hunter safety test, it’s good for three years” said Rogers.

Once the Marine has filled out their profile and taken the base hunter safety test, they must go to Camp Lejeune MCX’s sporting good section to pay for their permit.

“The receipt received will direct them to go directly to the Camp Lejeune game warden office where they will take their receipt to receive their permit,” said Rogers.

To bow hunt aboard the base, the Marine must take

an archery proficiency test.

It consists of one shot at a 3D deer target that is set up between 20-25 yards out. The Marine must make the shot in the kill zone and if they do not make it they must go practice and come back another day.

“We have the proficiency test to make sure we don’t have people out here flinging arrows everywhere and they are proficient with the weapon they are using,” said Rogers.

In the state of North Carolina, hunters are allowed to take six deer total with no more than four bucks, according to the NCWRC. Camp Lejeune and New River are all part of the same hunting program. The program has 161,000 acres of land to hunt on, said Rogers.

There are five areas that

allow firearms and eight archery exclusive areas aboard the air station for Marines to hunt.

“We have a great opportunity, there are some beautiful deer harvested here every year,” said Rogers.

At the game wardens office aboard the air station, there is a check station for Marines to bring their deer once they have killed it, where it is entered into the computer. They may also skin and process their deer there.

“Our goal here, at this office, is for the gunfighters, the ones who are deployed all the time and are out constantly doing the Marine thing, that when they have some down time they have a good place where they can enjoy themselves and go out hunting and relax,” said Rogers.
