Commander’s note

To the Marine Corps Air Station New River Community: As you may notice, the latest edition of the RotoVue is unlike any other in that it is comprised entirely of historical, unedited articles throughout the air station’s rich 70-year history. This is the last stand-alone edition of the RotoVue and following this issue, the RotoVue will be featured as a bi-weekly insert into Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune’s newspaper, The Globe. The RotoVue is joining The Globe due to a Headquarters Marine Corps Public Affairs reorganization plan aimed to operationalize the public affairs community. After June 1, combat camera will still be aboard the air station and able to support historical documentation, promotion, passport and squadron photographs; however, the public affairs Marines will be re-assigned to Marine Corps Installations East - Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune (MCIEAST-MCB CamLej) and II Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF). Public affairs Marines at MCIEAST will provide support to MCAS New River and its tenant commands, and II MEF public affairs will support Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 26 and MAG 29. The air s tation Combat Camera office is located at AS-425 and can be reached at 449-5277. The studio hours for photographs are Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 8-11 a.m., or by appointment. MCIEAST-MCB CamLej public affairs phone number is 451-7440. II MEF public affairs phone number is 451-7442. This issue is completely historical because we felt there was no better way to honor the service members, civilians and families who shaped MCAS New River into the installation it is today. Thank you for your loyal readership. Semper Fidelis.

HMM-161 Adds Page To Vietnam Combat Story Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron-161 left MAG-26 in late Spring for a combat tour in Vietnam. No mention of the unit’s departure was made due to security reasons. The following is a recap of ‘161’s trip from a foggy airstrip at New River to a steaming jungle near the DMZ.

July 17, 1968

QUANG TRI, VIETNAM—When HMM-161 arrived at this remote Vietnam air base, it began adding another page to its thick volume of combat history which began at Pusan, Korea in 1951, when the unit became the first squadron to employ the helicopter in combat. Fourteen years later, on May 7, 1965, another first was added when HMM-161 made the first helicopter amphibious landing under combat conditions in the Republic of Vietnam. One year later, the seasoned squadron again hit the beach of Vietnam and settled at Marble Mountain. During those two visits in the RVN, HMM-161 participated in 16 major combat operations. With those credentials, LtCol. Paul W. Niesen, a jovial, stocky six-footer, trained his unit at continued from STALLION pg. 4 second Sea Stallion and Capt. J. J. McMenamin was his co-pilot. Crew Chiefs in the two CH53As were GySgt. R. D. Burke and SSgt. T. C. Jackson. All are members of HMH-461, except LtCol. Davis, who is currently serving as MAG-26 Logistics Officer. A heavy transport, the CH-53A is powered

MCAF New River for another trip into combat. The squadron left MCAF in late spring. The first leg of the of the journey was another addition to helicopter history. LtCol. Niesen led his 24 “Sea Knight” helicopters across the width of the United States to El Toro in three days, arriving as they had departed New River—in formation. Next came a 17-day voyage across the Pacific aboard the USS Princeton. Once again the squadron’s colors were unfurled as its skipper performed a daring sea rescue between Hawaii and Vietnam. A seaman who had fallen overboard was pulled from the ocean after Niesen created a Neptune landing zone with his large aircraft, actually landing in and lifting from the dangerous waters. On the morning of May 17, HMM-161 lifted from the deck of the Princeton and entered I by two turbine engines and has been test-flown at speeds in excess of 200 miles per hour. The Sea Stallion’s standard seating arrangements provide for 38 combat equipped Marines and cockpit seats for a three-man crew. With seats stowed, the CH-53A can accommodate combination load of troops, litter patients and cargo. The CH-53A loads or unloads more than a ton of palletized cargo a minute. One man (not

Corps’ northern east coast skyway route over the Cua Viet River, soon settling on Marine Aircraft Group-39’s flight line. By May 18, they were participating in MAG39’s daily working schedule. Niesen and company were successfully completing all phases of helicopter combat functions one day after their arrival in I Corps. After four days of intensive briefing, flying and perspiring under Vietnam’s 100 degree-plus sun, HMM-161 had memorized their geography lessons. Now, Ca Lu, Camp Carroll, the Rockpile and the Demilitarized Zone are a few of their normal workshops. Tactical trooplifts, logistical resupply and medical evacuations constitute their work day. Conclusively, LtCol. Niesen’s aircrews are presently adding another page to HMM-161’s impressive history. a crew), aided by a power loading and unloading system, is all that’s required to load or unload that aircraft’s cargo. Its 8 1/2” wide ramp is hydraulically operated by one man and can be locked in any position. The Sea Stallion — with its vertical flying capability, speed, and ability to land almost anywhere —provides assault depth that enables combat units to engage in large scaled attacks and inland penetrations previously impossible.

The one time I was glad to go back to work. When I suffered a stroke, I was worried about a lot of things and work was one of them. Especially with the memory loss I initially had. But after treatment and therapy at Onslow Memorial, I was able to get past the grey areas, recover completely, and come back to work and the things that were important to me…and the people who were important to me. To this day I will tell you that Onslow Memorial Hospital saved my life. And I’m very thankful. Even to go back to work. ~ Jamie McGlaughon Stroke Survivor
