Most people aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River see MV-22B Ospreys in the air and think all they do is ferry passengers and drop off cargo. With the help of mounted M240D machine guns, nothing could be further from the truth, said Sgt. Jorge D. Rios, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 264 Osprey crew chief. Rios practiced raining down metal death to ground targets from the air in a flight during a cycle of training at Mojave Viper aboard Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif., Feb. 29. “It was good training,” he said. “I can’t wait to go again.” Capt. Marcus D. Moyer, VMM-264 Osprey pilot, said the ramp-mounted weapon is a vital secondary defense against attackers. Their primary defense is the Osprey’s speed and distance from danger. However, the giant dirt cloud kicked up by an Osprey during take-off and landing on sand, known as a brownout, can be seen for miles, said Rios. Assailants could potentially spot it and mount an ambush. Crew chiefs using the weapon system can also protect troops on the ground during insertions or extractions, said Rios.

He added that before they can use the weapon in a deployed environment, Marines have to train on it on livefire ranges. Before his live-fire flight, Rios took several ground classes to understand the weapon system and the procedures used against malfunctions such as jams or “run-away guns,” when the weapon keeps firing after the trigger has been released. Also, in order to shoot accurately crew chiefs must understand the forces that act on a projectile fired from a moving Osprey, including gravity, the bullet’s spin and the aircraft’s wake, according to a training brief. Pilots’ flying also factors into crew chiefs’ accuracy. An unstable platform increases the spread of rounds from an intended target. Pilots also call out targets and weapon safety commands, making coordination between the Marines paramount. Even with perfect conditions, accurate shooting can be difficult. “When I was shooting it, my heart was pounding,” said Rios. “Next time I’ll try to keep calm and focus more on what I’m doing.” Instead of armed military-aged males and enemy vehicles, the crew chiefs practiced firing volleys of automatic fire on clumps of tires and abandoned vehicles on the vast Twentynine Palms range to build up experience.
