“I’m a little over-anxious,” said Brown. “I’m also very excited. The chance to deploy is what I joined for, and to be given that opportunity is a great thing. This will serve as a learning experience for me, and I am very eager to get out there and absorb all the information I can.” After visiting the armory, loading gear onto trucks, and saying final goodbyes, the Marines boarded buses for the ride to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point where they would depart for Afghanistan. Kristen Willits, mother of Seaman Andrew Willits, a corpsman deploying with the unit, showed her support by seeing her son off on the deployment, and offered words of encouragement. “As a mother of a deploying service member, my feelings are mixed,” said Willits. “I am profoundly proud and at the same
time dealing with fear. On the same note, we are thankful he is willing to stand in the gap to protect our freedoms. We will keep busy just like he will, and count the days down until his return.” Lt. Col. Kelvin Gallman, VMM-261 commanding officer, stated that the focus of the squadron on this deployment is safety. “We have trained hard for the mission at hand,” said Gallman. “Our primary goal for this deployment is that everyone we take off with here returns safely. Next for us is the mission. Our Marines are trained and squared away, eager to take care of business for the Marine Corps.” Lastly, Gallman offered a message for his Marines to remember as they embark. “We have trained hard, and we have worked hard. Now it is time to go out there and do this like we know how to do, as VMM-261 is one of the best squadrons on the line today.”
