Last Sea Knight mechanics graduate CNATT Cpl. John Suleski

With the advent of the MV-22B Osprey, the CH-46E Sea Knight is being retired from service in the Marine Corps. As the transition takes place, training for maintenance of the 49-year veteran aircraft will cease. The last two Sea Knight flight line mechanics graduated from the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training in a ceremony at the aviation memorial aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River, Sept. 13. “It’s the end of an era,” said Lt. Col. Martin Starta, CNATT commanding officer. The graduates, Pfc. Michael H. Powers, a Chesapeake, Va. native and Pfc. Jaleel R. Williams, a Boykins, Va. native, both reservists, are now going to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 774 based in Naval Station Norfolk, Va. As flight line mechanics, they received training on how to perform maintenance on the Sea Knight, including how to remove engines and rotors, use the necessary tools and combat corrosion, said Staff Sgt. Robert J. Isder, CNATT CH-46E flight line mechanic chief instructor. Williams said he plans on working hard at his new squadron

to keep the aircraft in the air. “With what Staff Sgt. Isder has taught me, I’m more motivated to carry on the tradition of the 46,” he said. Isder said that with the last two students leaving the schoolhouse, the CH-46 Maintenance Training Unit (MTU) will close. The 17-year CH-46E expert said leadership at the CNATT
aboard Naval Air Station Pensacola will send an official letter stating no other students will arrive. After that letter comes, the school will close and its facilities will be used for other purposes. Several of the instructors, including Isder, will go to the remaining active medium helicopter squadrons. Others who have already completed the MV-22B Osprey transition course, are awaiting orders to see what kind of squadron they will go to. “We’ve had the MTU here for more than fifty years,” said Starta. “It started in 1962. It’s a sad day but it’s also a great day because we have the MV-22 in service now and we have new aircraft, such as the (F-35 Joint Strike Fighter) that are up-andcoming.” The CH-46E, commonly known as “Phrogs,” successfully endured a baptism of fire in the Vietnam War in 1965. Since then, the aircraft has been used for cargo transport, troop insertions and casualty evacuations in multiple conflicts and humanitarian missions in varied places from Grenada and Lebanon to Iraq and Afghanistan. Although the days of the CH-46E are numbered, the aircraft and their maintainers will not drop their packs until the last flight is done.

Air station tracks NEW RIVER HAPPENINGS DATE alligator numbers EVENT LOCATION Lance Cpl. Cameron Payne ROTOVUE Staff
On a temperate North Carolina evening, a few good men set out from the Marine Corps Air Station New River marina to come face-to-face with one of nature’s most prehistoric creatures, the American alligator. David Rogers and Walter Cotton, air station conservations law enforcement officers, conducted a survey of the alligator population of the New River, Sept. 10. The game wardens filled their two boats with all of the necessary gear needed to accurately count the population, including high-powered spotlights, a GPS used to map the alligators, and radios to communicate where they were. As they set off in their boats, the vast amount of bait fish in the river jumped in reaction, mullet and shrimp leaping through the air, often within inches of the passenger’s heads, as if making their escape from an approaching predator. Making their way down the river banks, they used their lights to illuminate the red eyes of the reptiles, allowing them to gauge how large the creatures were. Although many were young alligators less than four feet long, some were recorded at much longer lengths. By the end of the trip, more than 20 alligators were spotted and logged. “It’s important to spot and record the alligator population,” said Rogers. “Although it hasn’t happened yet, if the population grows large enough, there could be a hunting season declared for the alligator to keep the population from growing at an uncontrollable rate.” Rogers went on to explain that with more alligators in the area, the sightings and human interactions with the reptiles will increase. These animals are wild and humans interacting with them could create an unnecessary risk. Those wishing to feed an animal could be signing the animal’s “death warrant,” said Rogers. If the alligators get used to the taste of human food, they could become a pest, Rogers explained. The warden’s office will relocate the animals to a location farther away from the area, but could see the same alligator four to six months later because they know an easy meal is available. According to North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, the government agency responsible for the enforcement of hunting, trapping and boating laws, the American alligator is listed as threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Feeding these animals in the wild could cause them to lose their fear of humans, making them more likely to approach and possibly attack. For more information on local wildlife regulations, contact the air station game warden’s office at 910-4490108 or visit www.ncwildlife.org.

Ultimate Warrior Challenge Lance Cpl. Jorden M. Wells ROTOVUE Staff
Marines from various units aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River participated in the Ultimate Warrior Challenge, Sept. 13. The Ultimate Warrior Challenge was hosted by the High Intensity Tactical Training (HITT) faculty and was part of the 101 Days of Summer program offered by the Semper Fit division of Marine Corps Community Services. The teams of four were referred to as ‘fire teams,’ each of which had to contain at least one female member. “We made the events in the challenge particularly demanding so the winning teams could say with confidence that they are some of the fittest Marines on the air station,” said Jamie Fox, HITT program coordinator. The exercises could be performed in any order that the Marines chose and were done in a relay fashion with each Marine needing to complete that particular exercise before the next could begin. The first challenge presented to the Marines was a modified maneuver under fire portion of the combat fitness test. Each Marine would first low crawl 20 yards, perform 50 ammo can
lifts and then do 20 ammo can push-ups. The second exercise was a 30-yard weighted sled push with a 90 pound load. “I can personally attribute my personal performance to the HITT center and its staff,” said Capt. Rebecca Gansca, civil law attorney aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. “The workouts they present keep you physically fit and ready for any challenge that may arise.” During the third event, each Marine had to perform a 15-yard tire flip with a tire from a 7-ton truck. The last event was fire team pushups. With each team in a square, feet placed on their teammates’ backs, the teams would push up the combined weight so only four pairs of arms were in contact with the ground. For each successful push-up performed within one minute, the team would have two seconds deducted off their time. “Events such as this are great for refueling the Marine Corps mentality,” said Gansca. “Not only do these events keep you in a combat readiness shape but it allows the Marines the opportunity to encourage one another and build camaraderie in a friendly yet competitive environment.”

(1) The 2013 Landmark Military Media “Football Contest” is an annual contest. This year the contest is sponsored by Moore Buick/GMC. Each week there will be 10 NFL and 5 College level games selected by the Landmark Military staff for the contestants to choose the winner. The contestant will choose who they believe will be the winner of each game. Landmark Military Media will keep track of the contestants’ week to week forecasts Each week, all participants will be entered to win a weekly prize. The weekly drawing will take place on Tuesday morning (after the preceding Monday night game). The winner of the weekly drawing will be emailed or called, announced on the Facebook pages for Camp Lejeune Globe and New River RotoVue and listed in both the Globe and RotoVue Newspapers. The prize can be picked up at the Globe and RotoVue’s business office anytime (1122 Henderson Drive, Jacksonville - across from the Jacksonville High School). Additionally each week, those who have correctly guessed a minimum of ten games will be put into a drawing for prizes to be awarded at the end of the 17 week promotion, December 30th. The person who has correctly guessed the most games during the season will win a 42” TV courtesy of Moore Buick/GMC. The more weeks you play, the better your chances are to win.
