How ‘Airman Snuffy’ changed my view on standards

A

s I move through what are most likely the last few years of my U.S. Air Force career, my mentality has begun to change.

Those things which we hold dear, like proper wear of the uniform, highand-tight haircuts and standing when a commissioned officer addresses us seem less important.

Not that I don’t still do those things, but they somehow haven’t seemed to matter as much to me. Possibly because I’ve started thinking about the next phase of my life; when I take the uniform off one final time and switch it out for a business suit.

That mentality changed late October, when I had the privilege of traveling to Joint Base-San Antonio, Texas and watching my only niece graduate from Air Force Basic Military Training.

While there were several events which occurred throughout the three days we were on base, the one I consider to be the most important was the Airman’s Coin Ceremony. Every one of the more than 800 graduates marched onto the small drill pad as a trainee, and by the time they left 45 minutes later, they were all Airmen.

my heart filled with pride. At that point, she officially carried on what has been a family tradition of service to the U.S. Air Force, almost continually, since before we became a separate branch of service in 1947.

Later that day, while eating lunch at the Base Exchange, I noticed a BMT graduate walk by me with a belt loop that was broken on his blue pants.

Not wanting him to get yelled at by an MTI, I walked over and politely let him know that he needed to fix it. He turned around, saw me in my service dress uniform and snapped to attention.

He gave me his reporting statement: “Sir, Airman ‘Snuffy’ reports as ordered,” and let me know that the loop had just broken. He was heading back to his dormitory after lunch to put on

a new pair of pants. He thanked me for letting him know, and I went on my way.

The entire reason I’m writing this article is because of that interaction with “Airman Snuffy.”

He didn’t know me at all - we were total strangers. He didn’t know where I worked, what I do for the Air Force or that I am probably less than two years from retirement. I don’t think any of that mattered to him. All he knew was that a master sergeant was talking to him.

That is when I was reminded that I, as do all noncommissioned officers and commissioned officers, have a responsibility to hold everyone to all standards, and to personally exceed the standards. It doesn’t matter if we are a day away from our retirement ceremony; we have an impact on each and every person we come in contact with. Whether it’s a positive or negative impact is totally up to us.

It took the combination of watching my niece become an Airman and my interaction with Airman Snuffy to force me to change, and remind me of the huge responsibilities which rest on my shoulders.

I know that every morning when I put on my uniform I’m going to ask myself, “What kind of impact are you going to have on people today?”

I think that’s a question everyone should ask themselves before they start their workday. Determine to have a positive impact on as many people as possible.

Thanks, Airman Snuffy, for unknowingly reminding me of what’s expected of me.

Resolute Brigade divers assist NY after Hurricane Sandy

Everyone on the team was trying to remember the words to a famous quote that best described their efforts during a recent mission to New York. One that would convey how they wished they could have done more to help, if they only had more time.

The 400-mile drive to reach the devastated area didn’t deter the team from making an impact. Whether they believed their influence was small or large, they said they knew their highly-specialized skills would be useful.

Seventeen Soldiers from three dive detachments, assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade, loaded their equipment on Light Medium Tactical Vehicles, moving trucks and SUVs, and drove north, Nov. 3, for a week-long mission to the New York state metropolitan area to aid Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

“Our higher headquarters were looking to assist in the recovery efforts, so they came to us because of our special capabilities,” said Capt.

Jon-Paul Navarro, 86th Dive Detachment commander, and officer in charge of the team.

Their initiative was seen the next day as they were sent to Fort Hamilton, N.Y. to live temporarily.

“We talked to key leaders and offered our assistance in any way we could. When we got to Hamilton, we dropped our bags and went straight to work on our first mission,” said Capt. Nathan Brenan, 544th Dive Detachment commander.

The team was tasked with missions on all sides of the upper and lower Hudson Bay. Much of the area did not have power, which limited outdoor missions; but they worked outside whenever possible. When necessary, the team worked long into the night.

“It is a great achievement when you are successful on a tough mission,” said Navarro. “It makes leaders proud and gives divers, the Army and the 7th Sustainment Brigade, a great relationship with the public. Our Soldiers will be able to see their efforts pay off.”

coastline. Most homes in the area were still without power a week after Sandy’s arrival.

“For many people in the neighborhood, we were the only form of military assistance they had seen,” said Brenan. “Many of the families were very appreciative of what we were doing.

New York is a very military friendly area and it showed.”

The water pumps the team brought to assist in the efforts are capable of pumping 1,500 gallons per minute, allowing them to assist in flooded areas, said Navarro. The dive team put the pump to use, assisting the New Jersey and New York fire departments by pumping out thousands of gallons of water from the subway.

used a floatable bladder to stop a leak at an Amtrak facility in Kerney, N.J., said Brenan. The facility flooded after a drainage valve was severed by the surge.

Initially, the team’s missions involved pumping out flooded areas, but after they arrived, they took the initiative to do much more, said Navarro.

The dive team spent the majority of its time at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Caven Point Marine Terminal in Jersey City, N.J. The pier holds survey and debris removal ships assigned to the Corps and the Environmental Protection Agency; however it was partially destroyed and incapable of use when the team arrived. They were able to fully recover the structure, replacing wood beams and steel rods to make it stronger than before.

“A group of us spent the whole week repairing the pier, using a stockpile of wood to replace and remove any damage found,” said Brenan. “The subway and the pier at Caven Point were inoperable but when we left, the subway was back and running and the pier was complete.

The feedback we have received so far made our trip here worthwhile.”

Before the team returned home, they also assisted a team of U.S. Navy divers by assessing flood damage at Battery Park in Manhattan, NY, helping to set the stage for a full recovery of the pier there.

“It was amazing to see three different detachments come together for the mission in New York and New Jersey, giving the same motivation on day one through day 10,” said Navarro. “It was a great thing for everyone to come together and flawlessly execute the mission.”

Even before returning to Fort Eustis, Va., the team was asked to come back and continue with recovery efforts if possible, said Brenan. They received phone calls and emails about how exemplary the dive team’s efforts were, and some divers are scheduled to go back for finishing touches to the Caven Point pier.

Finally, the team remembered the quote, eloquently stated by Mother Theresa of Calcutta, “We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.”

It summed up their feelings perfectly.

ACC Commander ends time as F-22 pilot condent in Raptor

After five months in the cockpit and numerous discussions with combat-ready pilots and maintainers, the commander of Air Combat Command is ending his tenure as an F-22 pilot, confident that the aircraft is safe to fly and on a path toward unrestricted worldwide operations.

Gen. Mike Hostage recently completed his final flight in the F-22 during a tour of U.S. Air Forces Central Command bases.

"I originally began flying the F-22 to better understand the risks and challenges our Raptor community was facing. At the time, our Airmen's confidence in the jet had been shaken. Now that I've gone through F-22 qualification training and flown with most of our units while closely tracking the progress we've made with the life support system, I'm convinced we have significantly reduced the level of risk," Hostage said. "And, after experiencing what the Raptor can do, I'm more convinced than ever that we need this superb combat asset in the uncertain world we face."

When he began his checkout, the general had pledged to fly the F-22 until the problems with the jet had been solved and operations were back to normal. "Much as I would dearly love to continue to fly this amazing airplane, today's tough fiscal climate means I don't have enough flying

hours for all of my aviators. Every sortie I fly means one less for a young fighter pilot who might someday have to go to war. Thus, my stopping will put those hours where they need to be flown...in the hands of our front-line combat pilots."

The general completed his F-22 initial qualification training in June. Since then, he has flown all of the operational employment scenarios the F-22 is tasked for in current war plans.

"The F-22's speed, radar, flight altitude and stealthy characteristics provide pilots the unparalleled ability to dominate any adversary," said Hostage. "This capability makes potential adversaries take note, and will be crucial to our nation's success in the more-contested operations we anticipate and for which we are training."

The success of an ACC-led F-22 Life Support System Task Force that identified the major factors contributing to then-unexplained physiological incidents involving a small number of pilots also factored in the commander's vote of confidence. Spearheaded by ACC's Director of Operations, Maj Gen Charlie Lyon, the Task Force initiated numerous steps to improve safe and effective F-22 operations. Two key changes are a redesign of a valve in the pilot's upper pressure garment (UPG) to prevent improperly inflated vests from restricting pilot breathing as well as an automated back-up oxygen system to augment the existing manual

emergency oxygen system.

As aircraft and equipment modifications have proceeded, the Air Force and Department of Defense have gradually lifted restrictions on F-22 operations.

The remaining peace-time restrictions on flight altitudes and using F-22s to conduct Aerospace Control Alert missions in Alaska will be lifted once the modified UPG valves and A-BOS are fielded.

During the transition to normal operations period this year, F-22s have deployed to Southwest Asia, Guam and Okinawa to enhance regional security partnerships and resume training activities in forward-deployed regions.

F-22s have flown more than 14,000 sorties over 19,000 hours since the last previously unexplained physiological incident on March 8. Since then, the fleet has experienced a small number of inflight events commensurate with the risk-reduction measures put in place. Also, on November 16, an F-22 crashed near Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., after the pilot ejected

safely. Although an investigation of that accident is currently underway, initial indications are that the aircraft's life support system had no bearing on the crash.

"We know that mechanical components sometimes fail, and we have backup systems and emergency procedures to deal with that," the general said. "We also know that in flying high performance fighters, despite our best efforts, we will sometimes lose an aircraft. In the case of the previously unexplained physiological incidents, we did not know why some pilots were experiencing hypoxia-like symptoms. We needed to get to the bottom of that, and I believe we have."

"Flight safety requires constant vigilance and continuous improvement," Hostage said. "We always strive for zero mishaps, and in the case of the F-22, we have learned a tremendous amount in the last year. I am confident we are ready to return to managing the safety of F-22 operations in the same way we deal with every other high-performance aircraft."

On the battle-scarred fields of Verdun, France, rubble litters the landscape. Upturned soil and wretched trees lurch toward the sky in ugly gray masses, seeking the sun behind a smokescreen of artillery fire.

Amid the destruction, and long after the fighting stopped, small, poppy flowers grow, reminding those who survived that no matter the circumstance, life presses forward.

For British Royal Air Force Flight Lt. Richard Bush, 480th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing intelligence exchange officer, it is important to remember why he wears a red poppy instead of white.

"During World War I, the troops saw only poppies growing after artillery shelling," said Bush. "They said the poppies were red with the blood of the fallen."

Bush wanted to bring the European holiday Remembrance Day, which is similar to Veteran's Day, to Langley Air Force Base, Va. Also known as Poppy Day, the holiday honors veterans worldwide and other victims of war. A common symbol of remembrance is the red poppy.

Bush honored the holiday though the Royal British Legion, a United Kingdombased charity devoted to aiding veterans.

The legion offers welfare services, financial aid and specialty services to qualified individuals. It also hosts remembrance tours and pilgrimages, and they give advice about separation entitlements, benevolent help and similar avenues veterans can take to improve their quality of life.

The legion has an American branch of the charity designed to help veterans of conflicts in which the United States and Great Britain fought together. Bush raised money through donations for the legion, knowing how much it can im-

pact a family.

"When I was back in England, I had a troop whose mom passed away, leaving him to raise his younger siblings," said Bush. "The Legion gave the grieving family a trip to Euro Disney and helped out with a mortgage on a house for them."

Bush was touched by the gesture and decided he would help give more than just one family the opportunity to truly live again after such a catastrophe.

"Whether American or British, veterans have earned a fair shake," said Bush. "This charity allows me to further aid them and show them how truly honorable it is to follow in their footsteps."

Col. Jeffrey Kruse, 480th ISR Wing commander, believes having the legion represented at Langley does more than honor veterans.

"This charity strengthens the ties between the US and UK, and it honors our allies," said Kruse. "That is why I am privileged to be a part of the legion's efforts."

In America, any money donated to the American branch of the legion goes straight to those qualified for aid.

Kruse and Bush agree veterans, both homegrown and foreign, deserve to see their fallen comrades again in the heart that lies behind every red poppy worn.

Soldiers sail to D.C.

Soldiers onboard ships and watercraft is nothing new, but for many in the National Capitol Region, the visit by the U.S. Army Landing Craft Utility (LCU) 2006 provides a chance to see some unique military support capabilities that may save lives. “We want to highlight that the various capabilities of the 7th Sustainment Brigade in general and its 10th Transportation Battalion’s LCU 2006 in particular can provide to the various emergency response and federal agencies in the D.C. area if requested to do so,â€? said Col. Jennifer Reinkober, commanding ofďŹ cer of the 7th Sustainment Brigade, Fort Eustis, Va. “This mission also provides the necessary underway time to train our engineering and deck side personnel as well as training for our future vessel masters.â€?

The 7th Sustainment Brigade is the “Army’s Navy.� According to the unit’s website, the 7th Sustainment Brigade is the only Composite Sustainment Brigade within the Active Component of the U.S. Army and its mission is to “conduct multimodal transportation operations in support of the reception, staging and onward

movement of joint and/or combined forces into a theater of operations.â€? “We have a 10,000 nautical mile range and can drive up to any beach as long as we have 10 feet of water under our stern,â€? said Chief Warrant OfďŹ cer Two Nicholas Laferte, 10th Battalion Maritime operations ofďŹ cer. “We have a load capacity of 350 short tons, and can maintain 10 knots fully loaded. It took the vessel approximately six days during its deployment to Haiti.â€?

LCU 2006 is berthed at the South West Waterfront Police pier, is 174 feet in length, 42 feet across the beam and normally carries a crew of 14. Its total load capacity is the equivalent of 15 fully loaded C-141 transport aircraft. During the their port visit to D.C., the Soldiers explained the details of their craft’s capabilities to the Joint Force Headquarters - National Capitol Region, U.S. Army Military District of Washington Deputy Commander Egon Hawrylak and other staff members based at Fort Lesley J. McNair, just down the street from their pier side location.

Everyone has a story: Finding g the light in the darkness

“Sometimes it’s really busy outt here; other times, it’s quiet,” the 690th Rapid R Port Opening Element cargo speecialist said over the din of the forklift mottor. “It doesn’t matter though. There’s now where else I’d rather be.”

While this sincerity is easy to disscount as mere feigned enthusiasm, Visserr genuinely enjoys his job - routinely lo oading and unloading cargo on water-born ne vessels, rail cars and aircraft. To him m, anything is better than the life he left beehind.

Like many young men and wo omen, Visser, now 21, joined the Army at age a 18 as a way to escape a crumbling hom me life devoid of hope and opportunity. Having H not met his father until age 10, he hoped h the latter half of his childhood would w hold promise.

Suffice to say, life in the coastall community of Redondo Beach, Calif.. only got worse.

“My parents were really wrappeed up in narcotics, always having drugs in the house. It got to a point where they had ” said me acting as a lookout for them,” Visser. “I dealt with that until I was w 18 years old.” mpactHis rocky home life negatively im ed his academic progress, as he felll short of meeting state requirements forr high school graduation. With no supporrt sysking a tem, no job opportunities and lack high school diploma, Visser was deesperate.

Despite the darkness surrounding him, he found distractions away from drug use. Visser began attending church c moil at groups as a way to escape the turm home. ay just “At first, I used church as a wa to get away from my parents,” hee said. nd be“Eventually, after going so often an ing there, it began to make sense to t me, and I started to believe. I decided to t live

for it, because it got me through that darkness and kept me going when I felt I couldn’t.”

Eventually, he moved out of his parents’ home and began living with his grandmother. He knew he needed to get away to build a future - calling the Los Angeles area “overcrowded,” and “impossible to find a job in.”

He attended a special secondary school, where he not only earned the requirements for high school graduation, but notched a 4.0 grade point average in the process. Upon receiving his diploma, Visser decided looking for low-wage jobs in Redondo Beach would only keep him mired in the stale lifestyle his parents endured.

“I didn’t want to be like that, I wanted better for myself,” he said. “I knew the only way not to be dragged down into that way of life was to get out of California.”

Through his time spent at church, he began building pillars of emotional support he never had in his youth, earning encouragement from fellow worshipers and friends he made. Upon building a positive nucleus, Visser knew whatever he decided to do with his life needed to be in the business of helping others.

That’s when he found his calling - a career in the U.S. Army.

“I had my diploma, I knew I wanted to help people, and I knew I had to get away from home and make my own way,” Visser recalled. “The Army allowed me to do just that. I knew even then the Army was more than fighting overseas. I saw how the military helped people in need, like after hurricanes and earthquakes. I wanted to do those things.”

Visser enlisted April 26, 2010, and attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, S.C., shortly thereafter. Upon graduation, he transferred to Fort Eustis for Advanced Individual Training as an “88H,” or cargo specialist.

He admits the transition from the loose, beach town life in California to the rigid, highly-structured Army lifestyle was difficult at first. Visser was the only Soldier in his AIT graduating class to remain at Fort Eustis for his first operational assignment.

“I was the only one of 30 people to get

stuck here. My friends were getting orders to Korea, all over the place, and I had to stay here,” he said.

But he’d already escaped the drugs and despair back home, and knew where to look for guidance - his faith. Visser’s outgoing nature earned him friendships and the praise of his unit leadership. He relied on his battle buddies and leaders to mentor and guide him, transforming himself into a professional Soldier.

“I really relied on my roommate, [Spc. James Conklin]. He helps me out a lot, and sets a good example for me to follow,” he said. “My first sergeant and commander have been there with me, too.”

With the backbone of the Army behind him, Visser began concentrating on his passion - helping others. Volunteerism became his favorite activity, often being the first Soldier willing to raise his hand when opportunities arose.

Following Hurricanes Irene in 2011 and Sandy earlier this year, Visser banded together with other church members to help storm victims in nearby Poquoson clean up flood- and wind-damaged areas. He sponsored a small child from India, regularly donating money and communicating with the child’s family

halfway around the world. Visser regularly attends Wave Church in Virginia Beach, where he participates in poverty relief efforts across south side Hampton Roads.

Of these efforts, Visser said his time preaching to and talking with troubled youth at a Newport News correctional facility had the most impact on him.

“I see a lot of those kids have dealt with the same situations and adversity that I did. I can talk to them and make them see the good things in life,” he said.

“I want them to do something better for themselves when they get out. I really see myself in them.

“One day I went to preach, and met this kid named Chris. I talked to him for nearly two hours and his story was identical to mine,” he continued. “I told him, ‘I know where you’ve been through, what it feels like, what’s going on inside your head. Look around - there are so many opportunities for you to do better for yourself. One day, you’re going to look back and be glad you took those steps, just like I do now.’ He’s out now, back in northern Virginia, and he’s doing well, even planning on attending Bible college.”

Visser’s first sergeant, 1st Sgt. Jenni-

fer Callicutt, said she is “extremely impressed” with him, not only as a Soldier, but as a person.

“He’s a great Soldier, but he’s more than that. He’s always volunteering, always giving his time,” she said. “It amazes me that he’s so young but has such a big heart. He never complains, and is always willing to help others and do the right thing.

“He’s going to make a great husband for someone one day,” she added, smiling. “Everyone knows about Visser. Everyone knows he’s a great guy.”

Visser is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, which he plans to use in a future career as a police officer after his time in the Army. Additionally, he plans to attend Bible college to help him build his skills as a religious leader.

“Right now, I’m a worship leader in my church. It’ll give me the tools to lead better, while helping me work on myself,” he said. “I know I’m not perfect no one is - but making myself better will help me make more of an impact in others’ lives, keep them away from drugs and alcohol and stay positive.”

For now, Visser is enjoying the life he is making for himself. Between church, volunteering, his career and the satisfaction of successful independence, he “couldn’t ask for much more in life.”

“The one piece of advice I have for anyone feeling that they can’t go on is to never give up. Don’t quit; the second you quit, the regrets begin,” he said. “Don’t wait on taking chances. Do what you feel is right when you feel it.”

As the sun retreated behind the tree line west of the Washington Boulevard motor pool, Visser walked away from his forklift to his car, the same gravel crunching beneath his boots. In the morning, he’ll return to the dusty yard to do it all over again.

The days will pass and the seasons will change. Eventually, the specialist may become a sergeant, move on to other installations and perhaps serve around the world, but his mantra remains the same: “There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.”

“Regardless of how bad life can seem, there’s always light in that darkness. You just have to find it and follow it.”

The NGA Conference brought more than 40 governors to Williamsburg in July 2012, and McDonnell praised the VSP and Virginia Guard for their effective partnership and role in how smoothly the event was conducted. Airmen reminded to get TDAP

According to the Centers for Disease Control, as of Nov. 17, 2012, more than 36,000 cases of pertussis and 16 pertussis-related deaths were reported this year.

The Department of the Air Force mandated all personnel to receive the tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid and acellular pertussis, or TDAP, vaccine as part of every Airman’s individual medical readiness in June 2012.

The TDAP vaccine was licensed in 2005, and is the first vaccine to protect against pertussis as well as tetanus and diphtheria.

All Airmen who have not received their TDAP vaccination by Jan 1, 2012 will be considered overdue, and therefore ineligible to deploy.

“It was discovered that immunity to these diseases, pertussis in particular, waned after time,” said Dr. [Lt. Col.] Teresa Nesselroad, 633rd Medical Operations Squadron allergist. “The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices made a recommendation that all American citizens get the TDAP vaccine.”

The ACIP provides advice and guidance on effective control of vaccine-preventable diseases, and develops written recommendations for routine administration of vaccines.

Although the extent of tetanus, diphtheria and pertus-

sis may not be common knowledge, they can be very serious diseases.

All three diseases are caused by bacteria. Diphtheria and pertussis are spread from person to person. Tetanus enters the body through cuts, scratches or wounds. · Tetanus, also known as lockjaw, causes painful muscle spasms and stiffness. It can lead to tightening of muscles in the head and neck, leaving the victim unable open the mouth or swallow, and can kill about one out of every five individuals infected. · Diphtheria can cause a thick membrane to cover the back of the throat, leading to problems breathing, paralysis, heart failure and even death. · Pertussis is a common disease often referred to as the whooping cough. It causes severe coughing spells, which can lead to difficulty breathing, vomiting and disturbed sleep. It can lead to weight loss, incontinence and rib fractures. Two in 100 adolescents and five in 100 adults with pertussis are hospitalized or have complications - including pneumonia or death.

Pertussis can also cause serious illness in infants, children and adults. The disease begins like the common cold, with congestion, sneezing and a possible mild cough or fever. But severe coughing can start after one to two weeks.

olent and rapid coughing. The fits can go on until the air is gone from the lungs and those infected are forced to inhale with a loud “whooping” sound. In infants, the cough can be minimal. They may instead have life-threatening pauses in breathing.

Pertussis is usually spread by coughing or sneezing while in close contact. Many infants who get pertussis are infected by parents, siblings or other caregivers who may be unaware they have the disease, further demonstrating the importance of the TDAP vaccine.

“This vaccine is recommended not only to protect your health, but the health of those around you,” said Nesselroad.

As he drove through local neighborhoods, he noticed that despite the chill in the air, neighborhood children were riding bicycles and playing outside without wearing coats.

He stopped his vehicle, got out and asked one of the children why.

“I don’t own one,” the child said. The reply bothered the man, leaving him with a strong desire to help the local children.

This need for basic items prompted Staff Sgt. Justin Olson, 633rd Security Forces Squadron community policing patrolman, to head up a coat drive to benefit the local community, which ran from Oct. 1 through Nov. 30. More than 200 coats and miscellaneous clothing items were collected and donated to Hampton Roads Ecumenical Lodgings and Provision, or “H.E.L.P,” Incorporated.

Although this isn’t the first time 633rd SFS has hosted a coat drive, Olson said

it’s been the most successful year, due to a change in collection strategy. Collection boxes were placed at multiple locations throughout Bethel Housing, instead of at one central location as in years past.

“This year we brought the drop-off locations to the people,” said Olson. “People were even moving and said they had coats to donate, so we would go to people’s houses and pick up the coats. The fact that we made it so easy to donate is what really brought us to success.”

In addition to collecting coats and other clothing items, this year the drive also included books and magazines. That portion of the drive ran from Nov. 1 through Nov. 20, and garnered more than 200 donations, which will be given to local schools and the U.S.O. “Our job is the community itself,” Holton said. “Our primary focus is the security of the residents out here, the base and this extension of the base. Secondary to that is actually making contact with the community, being involved with everyone out here and trying to branch out to other parts of the community outside of Bethel Housing.”

According to Olson, coordinating a collection has a lasting effect on the surrounding community and is a great way to foster relationships.

“The more we help out our community around us, the deeper roots we set in with the community and the civilians that support the base,” he said. “It’s a good tool.”

No matter how big or small the donation is, Holton said anything a person could give would make world of difference to a family in need, and in turn, benefit the community as a whole.

“We give back to the community outside the military family,” said Holton. “They then give back to the folks within our community. It’s a big circle, and we encourage people to get involved in the circle and pay it forward.”

As seen through the efforts of the 633rd Security Forces Squadron community policing team, asking a question and caring enough to follow-through with the answer can spark an initiative that benefits hundreds of local families, strengthening the relationship between the military and civilian communities and ensuring that everyone stays warm this winter.

Bleak December skies and light rain did little to dampen the holiday spirit at Fort Eustis, as Service members and their families lined up and loaded up a free Christmas tree via the “Trees for Troops” giveaway program at the post Dec. 5.

The program, sponsored by the Christmas Spirit Foundation and FedEx, donated Christmas trees to military personnel and their dependents from the Hampton Roads area.

Customers from two Christmas tree farms, Wyckoff’s in Belvidere, N.J., and Yenser’s in Lehighton, Pa., collectively donated more than 500 trees, which were shipped to Fort Eustis free of charge by FedEx. Each tree featured a tag with a handwritten message from its donor.

Once the Service member or family members selected a tree from beneath the picnic pavilion adjacent to the U.S. Army Reserve Center, Soldiers from the 1-222nd Aviation Regiment and volunteers from the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program carried and secured the tree to their vehicles.

“This is our sixth year participating in the program, and it’s been a big success. The trees find homes quickly,” said Michael Farist, the 733rd Mission Support Group Operations Branch logistics supervisor.

“We especially looked out for spouses of deployed troops and wounded warriors, giving them priority in getting a tree. We want to ensure we take care of our people and give them a great holiday.”

Jessica Kurt, whose husband serves at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown’s Cheatham Annex, said the program was an “awesome way to reach out to the military.”

“We’ve had artificial trees in the past, but I heard about this giveaway and decided it was time to go real,” she said. “It’s a great program and we really appreciate it.”

The joy was not exclusive to the tree recipients.

Volunteers laughed and smiled alongside customers, genuinely enjoying the festive atmosphere.

“I really like being able to help other Soldiers and their families to have a good holiday any way that I can,” said U.S. Army Pvt. Tyler Goodson, a student at the 1-222nd Avn. Rgt. “The whole event is about the spirit of giving for Christmas. It’s a lot of fun, and it makes me feel like I’ve done good.”
