VFA-81 conducts fly-over for the greatest spectacle in racing

MIKE ZIAREK VFA-81 Public Affairs On May 29, the Sunliners of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 81 conducted a fly-over for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, the largest single day sporting event in the world. Nearly 400,000 people from all over the world were in attendance and more than 7 million people watched the event on television.

At noon, as Darius Rucker began

singing the national anthem with the crowd of 400,000 all standing proudly, the sound of eight General Electric F414 jet engines could be heard in the background.Toward the conclusion of the anthem, four F/A-18 E/G carrier-capable, multi-role and electronic attack fighters flown by Lt. Cmdr. Marshall Foard, Lt. Alex Beasley of VFA-81 and aircrew from Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 139 made their approach in a diamond formation, separated by only 25 feet.

“This is the first fly-over I have

ever performed and it will be impossible to beat. It is a tremendous honor to be able to play a role in the 100th Anniversary of the Indy 500 and to see 400,000 people on their feet,” said Beasley, who was born and raised in Indiana.

The Sunliners will continue to conduct carrier qualifications and tactical training in preparation for air wing integration. The squadron proudly continues it’s tradition of excellence looking ahead to deployment “Anytime, Anyplace,” in defense of the nation.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS SEMINAR

Please be aware that there is another security concern to be vigilant about.

The Google Play store for Android smart phones has a new app that can scan your CAC card.

The only reason that anyone would want this app is to steal your personal information. Do not download this app. No one knows where the information ends up once you scan a CAC. This app can scan the barcode on the front of a CAC and obtain the name, full SSN, rank and EDIPI number of the card holder. It has not been determined if data is or can be transmitted off the scanning device and sent to another device.

No one has identified a purpose for the application and it is not recommend to download or use on any device.

Feds Feed Families is an annual campaign that runs from June - August. The mission is to encourage federal civilian employees and military members to bring non-perishable food items to their offices for distribution to local food banks.

Feds Feed Families is a voluntary effort supported by federal employees across the country. Last year the executive departments and agencies collected nearly 9 million pounds of food. This year’s goal is to make 100% contact to increase involvement, as opposed to last year’s goal which was based upon weight.

GOLD STAR FAMILIES HONORED AT REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY STORY AND PHOTOS BY MC3 KAYLA KING NAS Oceana Public Affairs “If only I could have hugged him just one more time and told him that I loved him,”said Commander, Naval Submarine Forces Executive Officer Lt. Cmdr. Scott Trojahn, a Gold Star family member. As tears filled his eyes, he reminisced about his son, Fire Controlman 3rd Class Matthew Trojahn. “On 29 August 2013, Matthew took his own life. He did not die in Afghanistan or Iraq; instead he died alone in a hotel room in San Diego.”

Scott, like so many others, is a part of the Navy Gold Star Program (NGS), which was established by the U.S. Navy Oct. 1, 2014, to help provide continuing support for surviving family members of Sailors who lost their lives while serving on active duty.

NAS Oceana hosted the first

annual Roll Call of Remembrance Memorial Day Observance at the Chapel of the Good Shepherd May 25 to honor the 80 fallen heroes associated with Hampton Roads.

“Two weeks ago Dawn and I would have celebrated our son, Matthew Ryan Trojahn’s 24th birthday,” said Scott. “We would have been celebrating his birthday if only the events leading up to his passing on 29 August 2013 were different.”

“If only’ are words most people commonly use in reflections of life events like ‘if only I took time to study for that test,’ or ‘if only I had chosen a different career field.’ For Gold Star family members, the words ‘if only’ are much more portent and painful to think about,” said Trojahn. “To a Gold Star survivor, ‘if only’ represents the longing for the opportunity to spend just one more second with their loved one. To me, ‘if only’ has been a painful reminder

of the things I could have done if only I had the opportunity.”

Scott’s son enlisted in the Navy more than two years ago and was finishing “C” school in San Diego, as a fire controlman. He said his son was suffering from depression.

“The day before, my wife Dawn was convinced something was wrong. Not knowing what had happened in San Diego, Dawn and I started calling Matthew in an attempt to see if he was okay ... By that evening, Dawn was convinced that Matthew had passed. I was praying that she was wrong, but felt as though she was right,” said Scott.

Scott and his wife could not take the unknown any longer and started making phone calls to the hotel that their son was staying at during the Labor Day weekend.

The hotel gave him the phone number to what he thought was the police station, but alas was the San Diego coroner’s office.

“I could not believe what I was being told. I could not speak the pain was so intense. The only thing I could do was hang up the phone and hold Dawn and cry,” said Scott.

“Every Gold Star family has had to endure this painful process.

Whether you’re a parent, a husband, a wife or a child, the pain itself is still the same,” he added.

During the ceremony, the names of the fallen heroes were read aloud during a Roll Call of Remembrance. Several Gold Star families were gathered at the front of the chapel memorializing their lost loved ones. Many were wearing the Navy Gold Star (NGS) next of kin lapel button.

While this decoration is normally presented to surviving family members during military funerals, it may also be presented retroactively for service members who lost their lives at any time after March 29, 1973.

The NGS next of kin lapel button depicts a gold star in a circle, commemorating honorable service. Four sprigs of oak surround the circle and represent the branches of the armed forces, a decoration introduced by the

military in 1977 as a symbol of honor for survivors of deceased service members.

“In keeping with the tradition of honoring our fallen service members and their families Commander, Navy Installations Command designated the month of May as Gold Star Awareness Month. Throughout the year, and especially during the month of May, we focus on our Gold Star spouses, children, sibling, parents and their extended family members ensuring they know our country, our military and our community has not forgotten them or their sacrifice,” said NAS Oceana Gold Star Coordinator Samantha Blackwell.

Coordinators who are located at Navy installations across the U.S. work to put Gold Star events together. They coordinate with Fleet and Family Support Centers to assist surviving family members in receiving benefits and resources for which they are eligible. CHAPLAIN’S CORNER Praying with our ears

LT. RYAN WHITFIELD Chaplain A few months ago, my 5-year-old son Elisha asked my wife a difficult question.

He remembers when my

wife was pregnant with our daughter Hannah and, one day, asked her randomly, ”Mommy, how did my baby sister Hannah get into your tummy?”

After asking this question he stood there and waited patiently for an answer while my stunned wife searched her heart to figure out how to explain the phenomenon of pregnancy to a 5-year-old.

My wife delayed, hoping that Elisha would be distracted and his attention drawn to something other than his question, but he simply sat listening intently and wait-

ing for a response.

Elisha had a question burning in his heart. He understood that it was impossible for him to answer this question himself, so he sought a response from the one person he knew capable of answering.

When we have on our hearts burning questions and concerns that we are unable to answer ourselves, we often seek God’s guidance.

Prayer is the gateway through which we are connected to and communicate with God and is a crucial

part of our faith.

Unfortunately, one of the most common issues that people express to me as a pastor and chaplain is a disappointment that God has not answered their prayers.

I Thessalonians 5:17 tells us that we are to pray without ceasing. Many of us have interpreted this verse to mean that we must remain always before the Lord verbally expressing our concerns, needs and desires.

Through the eyes of this interpretation, many of us approach God looking for answers to our problems,

and we pour out our hearts until we have run out of words, time and energy.

When we are done speaking to God, we don’t bother to wait on his response.

To pray without ceasing does not mean to speak without ceasing. It means that after we have sincerely expressed ourselves to God, that we must also not cease to listen.

God always answers our prayers. Sometimes we miss his response because it is not the response we want or expect. Sometimes we miss God’s response because we

become distracted.

Other times we miss God’s response because we are not patient enough to wait for it.

God responds to our prayers in many ways, but because we are often too consumed with speaking to him, we fail to hear him respond.

The goal of prayer is not simply to talk to God, but rather to receive, reflect upon and respond to the Spirit of God. In order to pray effectively, we must not simply pray with our mouths, but we must also learn to pray with our ears.

Naval Air Force Atlantic commemorates 74th anniversary of the Battle of Midway

BY CARRIE ANDERSON The Oceana Observer The legendary Battle of Midway was decided in five fateful minutes, between 10:25 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on June 4, 1942, when naval aviators attacked and ultimately sank three of four veteran Japanese carriers that had laid a trap for the U.S. Navy operating in the Pacific during World War II. The fourth Japanese carrier would be sunk later in the afternoon by Navy aircraft.After that key battle, the balance of sea power in the Pacific shifted from Japan to equity between America and Japan. Soon after the Battle of Midway, the U.S. and its allies would take the offensive in the Pacific.

Hampton Roads played a key role in the Battle of Midway. All three of the carriers that fought at Midway, USS Enterprise (CV6), USS Hornet (CV-8), and USS Yorktown (CV-5), were built at Newport News shipbuilding in the 1930’s and roughly half of the aviation squadrons on those three carriers called Norfolk Naval Air Station home prior to World War II.

During the battle, U.S. forces lost over three hundred Sailors and Marines in the air and on the sea, including on the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier and the destroyer USS Hammann (DD 412). The aircraft lost in the battle totaled 145 aircraft. Every year, the anniversary of the battle is honored at the Navy Aviation Memorial Monument at 25th and Atlantic at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.

This year’s guest speaker was noted World War II historian Laura Orr, Deputy Education Director of the Hampton Roads Naval Museum in Norfolk. She is writing a book about World War II dive bomber pilot Captain Jack “Dusty” Kleiss, a member of the USS Enterprise’s (CV-6) Scouting Squadron 6.

The ceremony also featured Sailors from NAS Oceana laying a commemorative wreath followed by a bugler playing Taps and a fly over by two F/A-18E “Super Hornet” aircraft from Strike Fighter Squadron 81 (VFA 81), the “Sunliners”, followed by a solo fly over of a World War II vintage T-6 Texan.

Service members and their families tackled the visible debris on the Dam Neck Annex beach June 4 during the annual Clean the Bay Day. Volunteers all over Virginia, from Hampton Roads to Northern Virginia, from the Eastern Shore to the Shenandoah Valley, work by land and boat to give the Bay a massive spring cleaning every year. Since 1989, Clean the Bay Day has engaged more than 140,000 volunteers who have removed approximately 6.2 million pounds of debris from nearly 6,500 miles of shoreline in Virginia.

BLUE ANGEL PERISHES FOLLOWING AIRCRAFT MISHAP From Commander, Naval Air Forces San Diego, Calif. — An F/A18C Hornet assigned to the Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron crashed during air show practice at the Smyrna, Tenn., Airport June 2. The pilot, who did not survive, has been identified.

Blue Angel #6 was flown by Capt. Jeff Kuss, 32. He served as the opposing solo pilot. This was Kuss’ second year on the team and his first year as a demonstration pilot.

Kuss was a native of Durango, Colo., and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Fort Lewis College in 2006. Kuss was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps through the Officer Candidate Course in 2006 and reported to The Basic School at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., to complete training.

Kuss reported to Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola, Fla., for

aviation indoctrination in July 2007. He received his wings of gold in November 2009. He then reported to Strike Fighter Squadron 125 (VFA-125), the “Rough Raiders,” at NAS Lemoore, Calif., for initial training in the F/A-18 Hornet. He reported to U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN), NAS Fallon, Nevada, in July 2012 and graduated in September 2012.

Kuss joined the Blue Angels in September 2014. He accumulated more than 1,400 flight hours and 175 carrier-arrested landings. He attended the 2015 NAS Oceana Air Show with the Blue Angels where he piloted Blue Angel #7.

His decorations include the Strike Flight Air Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various personal and unit awards.

“The Navy and Marine Corps aviation team is grieving the loss of one of our own,” said Vice Adm. Mike Shoemaker, Commander, Naval Air Forces.

“Capt. Kuss was an incredible Marine, husband and father, and an inspiration to so many; his loss will be felt across the nation. Being a Naval Aviator is an inherently dangerous profession and our aviators knowingly accept that risk in service to their nation; but it still pains us greatly when we experience the untimely loss of a valued aviator and shipmate. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, fellow Marines and Blue Angels teammates.”

At approximately 3 p.m. CDT June 2, Kuss was taking off to start the afternoon practice when the mishap occurred. The crash occurred approximately two miles from the runway.

The other five Blue Angel jets were not involved in the incident and landed safely moments later. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.

The Navy’s Flight Demonstration team will conduct a onetime flight back to Naval Air Station Pensacola at which time

The frocking ceremony is a Navy tradition that precedes actual advancement.

Sailors are then advanced in pay over the course of three cycles throughout the year.

Frocking ceremonies allow Sailors to assume the title and wear the uniform of the next rank before the entitlement

of increased pay or other monetary allowances. The appointment carries with it the obligation that each frocked Sailor exercise increased authority and willingly accept greater responsibility.

The very first rating badge insignias were first prescribed in 1833 as an eagle and anchor. The eagle on the petty officer rating badge is derived from the Napoleonic eagle, but in 1941, the Navy changed the eagle’s facing direction to follow heraldic rules, which faces right toward the wearers “sword arm”. This rule continues to apply, and the eagle now faces to the front or the wearer’s right.

JUNE 11, 8 A.M. Head to Hampton, Va. for the return of the Life’s a Beach Triathlon. The Life’s A Beach swim is 200 yards of “almost anything goes,” with racers allowed to use almost anything to help them feel comfortable and have fun. The bike portion of the race is only five miles and is for fat tire bikes only as some courses may involve stretches of beach riding.The two-mile beach run is laid back and includes some obstacles to break up the run in a fun way. Conex Games was a timed fitness competition, each participant had to complete four dips, eight pull-ups, 16 burpees, 32 kettlebell swings and a 640 meter row. The top three male and females winners were awarded trophies. The first place male was Greg Baker and the first place female was Tanya Corcoran.
