Dam Neck Galley says thanks SUNLINERS CHANGE COMMAND

BY MC2 TONY ROSA NAS Oceana Public Affairs The Dam Neck Galley by the Dunes hosted their 8th annual Family and Friends Appreciation Luncheon for its Chesapeake Service Systems (CSS) employees Nov. 16. CSS, a private, non-proﬁt organization, provides job opportunities for people with disabilities in Hampton Roads, as well as transportation for their employees to and from their work place. Dam Neck Food Services Ofﬁcer Ed Ruhling welcomed guests and invited them to eat a meal specially prepared by the Dam Neck Galley’s own Navy culinary specialists. Following the meal, Ruhling spoke about how the luncheon began and why it was so important. “This whole thing started with Tom over there. In 2008, Tom Swanston came over here and presented the Dam Neck active duty crew with a nice appreciation plaque,” said Ruhling. The plaque was presented by CSS to show their appreciation for the efforts of the galley staff, the company and their employees. “We just felt like we shouldn’t be the one’s getting the appreciation, but rather is should be the CSS team and their staff,” said Ruhling. “You guys [the staff] come here 365 days a year, and provide a service and meals to our active duty. We felt that inviting you and giving you and your friends and families a nice meal was a little way of saying thank you and that we truly appreciate you all.” Following Ruhling, CSS Executive Director Thomas Swanston began his speech by praising the positive impact both those who work within the CSS organization and the Navy have on each other.

NAS OCEANA CELEBRATES HERITAGE PHOTO/STORY BY MC2 (SW) ALYSIA HERNANDEZ NAS Oceana Public Affairs Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana personnel gathered at the Chapel of the Good Shepherd to celebrate people, diversity and culture during a ceremony for Native American Heritage Month Nov. 19. Hosted by the NAS Oceana Heritage Association, the program included a brief history of inﬂuential Native Americans as well as two guest speakers who shared their heritage and personal experiences as Native Americans.

“We are here to celebrate Native American culture and talk about their contributions to our great nation – the length and scope of which are way too big to cover in this short program,” said Masterat-Arms 1st Class James Jansma. Members of the heritage association took turns presenting the history of influential Native Americans including William Terril Bradby, who was the first Native American Sailor; James Joseph Clark, who was the first Native American graduate of the Naval Academy in 1917; Ernest E.

Heritage: Oceana gives thanks for Native American Service — Continued from page 1 Evan, who received a Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Samar; and the Windtalkers who aided in the Paciﬁc War from 1942 – 1945 by transmitting code that the Japanese could not break. Senior Chief Culinary Specialist (SW/AW) Denita Johnson, who has been in the Navy for 21 years, shared her history as a Chippewa Indian from Fort Totten in North Dakota. She explained that she came from a bilingual family as her mother was a Sioux-Lakota Indian and her father a Chippewa. “I absolutely love being a cook and I love the opportunity I was given to be able to leave the reservation and come here and see and do different things,” Johnson said. She said she’s gone back to the reservation and she likes to go speak to students around the time of graduation. She’s had four people from the reservation join the military and so far they’ve all stayed in. Johnson explained

that she takes pride in getting them off the reservation and bringing them in to see different things. Chelsey Bertulano also shared her heritage as a Native American. Despite not knowing about her heritage growing up as she was adopted into a Scandinavian family, Bertulano said she always felt drawn to what it meant to be a Native American and a few years ago really immersed herself into her heritage. “It is truly an honor being a Cherokee person, having all of you come here to learn about the huge contribution that we have given to not only our country but to the land that we originally founded,” she said. Bertulano explained that she traced her lineage back and found that her ancestors are from the North Eastern Band of Cherokees of Northern Georgia and survived the Trail of Tears. “I have found out through educating myself about the Cherokee heritage that our spirits are strong and our spir-

First and foremost for being a positive in our lives, but also for employing such wonderful, hardworking people with disabilities,” said Swanston. “I wish CNN and other news channels could come here and see just exactly what the Navy does domestically. The Navy gives a lot of these folks a sense of hope and purpose, while also helping them get out and live better lives.” After Swanston spoke, he introduced CSS site manager for the Dam Neck Galley, Kisha Hunt, who opened the ﬂoor to anyone from CSS or their family members who wanted to speak about their experiences and what it meant to them. including Joseph Briggs, Sr. For two years Briggs and his wife Joy were unable to attend the luncheon. However, this year they were in attendance and gave a heartfelt message of their son, Joseph Briggs Jr., and what working at the Dam Neck Galley has meant to ‘Joe’ and their family. “Joey began this thing as what I would call an introvert. He did not talk much, not

even to me or his mother,” said Briggs, Sr.. “He now talks with us all the time. In fact, I haven’t told him this yet, but sometimes I just sit and listen because that’s all I can do because he talks so much.” Following Briggs Sr., Joy echoed the sentiments of her husband. “I don’t really know what our son would be doing right now if it wasn’t for what CSS provides Joey,” said Joy.“We are both retired, but Joey always lets us know he’s the only employed person in the house.” Mrs. Briggs also gave a sincere thanks to all of the bus drivers and staff at CSS for what they do every single day in driving and ensuring the safe travels of their son and others and allowing ‘Joey’ to change his schedule on such short notice when the family had a health concern. Following the Briggs family, several other employees of CSS and their families came up and echoed their sentiments about the joys of working with CSS and Dam Neck Galley and all they have gained from their experiences. LCDR ALAN SNYDER Chaplain This time of year is very important. Retailers and businessmen all over the world live for the ďŹ ve weeks before Christmas. More things are bought at this time of year than at any

other. Many stores must add on Christmas help. News outlets will talk for the next few weeks about how much the economy has rebounded by the spending done this Christmas. Each company hopes that it has that hot, new toy that every kid craves. Parents are torn between loving the season and waiting for it to be over so that they can go back to a normal schedule. Christmas parties abound everywhere and people celebrate that one hope, getting a great gift. Be honest, the thought counts, but you would still

like something that is useful or beautiful. We receive gifts this time of year, we give gifts this time of year and the merchants are happy. We ďŹ nd that we are happy also. My hope is that we are happy about the things that really matter this year. We can be surrounded by loved ones and enjoy the time together. As I get older I ďŹ nd that gifts are not as important as they used to be. What is important to me is that the people that I love know that I love them. That is such a wonderful gift to give; for Christians

Jesus gave it to us when he came to earth to die for us. He gave us the wonderful gift, himself. Giving of yourself to bless others will always be a blessing for you. It can help to make this the most wonderful time of the year. We ďŹ nd too often that we have gotten caught up in the many things in life that distract us and forget to honor God and the wonderful blessings that we have had bestowed upon us by him. This holiday season make God the central part of it; make him the reason you celebrate.

VFA-81: SWEENEY TAKES COMMAND OF THE SUNLINERS BY LT. J.G. MIKE ZIAREK VFA-81 Public Affairs Officer Cmdr. Brennan Sweeney relieved Cmdr. Brett Dresden as commanding officer, Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 81 in a formal ceremony at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana on Nov. 20. Dresden, a native of Bloomingdale, Mich., is a 1996 graduate of the United States Naval Academy and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1999 at NAS Meridian, Miss. He later earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Maryland. He previously served with Sea Patrol Squadron (VS) 24, VFA-195 and VFA-37, and has flown in support of Operations Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Prior to joining the Sunliners, his assignment was at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, as the Chairman of the Military Committee Maritime Standardization Board and Senior Staff Officer of the Naval Branch, NATO Standardization Agency. Dresden reported to VFA-81 in May 2013

as the Executive Officer and assumed command in August 2014. He led the Sunliners on a ten-month combat deployment in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the longest scheduled deployment since Vietnam. Their contribution included nearly 300 precision guided munitions with a total conventional ordnance expenditure of over 102 tons on ISIL, effectively limiting their ability to project terror and conduct operations. Over the course of his naval aviation career, Dresden has accumulated 3,664 flight hours, 1,010 carrier-arrested landings and 148 combat missions. Dresden will be retiring after 20 years of faithful and honorable service. He and his family will reside in Virginia Beach. The new commanding officer, Cmdr. Brennan Sweeney, is a native of Arlington, Va. and graduated from James Madison University, located in Harrisonburg, Va., in 1997. Sweeney received his commission through Officer Candidate School in January 1999 and was designated a Naval Aviator in March 2001. He later earned a Masters of Arts in National Security and

Sweeney has previously served with VFA-195, Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron (VMFAT) 101, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3 and VFA-37, and has conducted flight operations in support Operations Southern Watch, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, New Dawn and, most recently, Operation Inherent Resolve. He has accumulated 3,027 flight hours and 614 carrier-arrested landings. The new executive officer is Cmdr. Dan Catlin. A native of La Porte, Texas, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force after graduating with military distinction from the United States Air Force Academy in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science degree in International Relations. He was designated a Naval Aviator in May 2003 after completing an inter-service transfer to the United States Navy. Following initial F/A-18 training with VFA-125 at NAS Lemoore, Catlin reported to VFA-147 where he completed two WESTPAC combat deployments in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. After his tour with the VFA-147, Catlin reported to VFA-122 for instructor duty, followed by a department head tour with VFA-113 where he completed two more WESTPAC combat deployments in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Catlin most recently completed a tour at NATO Allied Maritime Command in Northwood, United Kingdom where he served as the N922 Military Partnership Branch Officer in support of NATO counter-terrorism and counter-piracy opera-

From Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic The 1,600 men and women and 67 aircraft of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1 arrived home on Saturday and Sunday following an around the world deployment as part of the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TRCSG). The air wing departed Norfolk last March aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) on a deployment to the U.S. Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Fleet areas of responsibility. The deployment included the historic three-carrier shift involving USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), USS George Washington (CVN 73) and USS Theodore Roosevelt. While on deployment CVW-1 logged almost 21,000 total flight hours on more than 9,100 sorties which included 10,618 combat flight hours during more than 1,800 sorties supporting Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR). Air wing aviators were credited with accumulating over 8,000 carrier arrested landings, or traps, during the deployment. A total of 1,085 bombs were dropped during OIR along with 24 air-to-ground missiles which added up to more than one million pounds of ordnance delivered. This was the first operational deployment for the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye airborne command and control aircraft assigned to Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 125. The “Tigertails” completed over 1,900 flight hours and 439 combat sorties supporting OIR. “It takes every Sailor and Marine on this ship and in the Air Wing to launch these aircraft into harm’s way and the professionalism and precision in which they performed was truly eye watering”, said Capt. Benjamin Hewlett, commander of CVW-1. “I am proud to have been the CAG for such an amazing team of professionals and we can all return home with the pride of a job well done.” The squadrons that returned to Naval Air Station Oceana on Sunday are Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 11, the “Red Rippers” flying F/A-18F Super Hornets,VFA211 “Checkmates” flying F/A-18F Super Hornets, and the “Knighthawks” of VFA-136 flying F/A-18E Super Hornets.

Virginia Beach Blvd., on the off-limits list to all Hampton Roads service members, Nov. 12, due to the establishmentâ€™s participation in an illegal business practice known as bird-dogging. This decision comes as a result of recommendations from the Armed Forces Disciplinary Control Board (AFDCB) for Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina, who convened on Nov. 4. Bird-dogging occurs when someone refers a prospective customer to a particular dealership or salesman for a given fee or compensation. According to Virginia Law, only salespersons licensed to a dealership can assist customers with a purchase of a vehicle. DRUG EDUCATION FOR YOUTH

Snowball Express is a four-day event for Gold Star Children filled with fun activities, like sporting events, dances and amusement parks.The Snowball Express organization, Gary Sinise Foundation and American Airlines hosts this annual event for children (five to 18-years-old) who have lost a parent on active duty. The children and their families participating from Norfolk will take the same flight on Dec. 12 from Norfolk International Airport. Military members, Patriot Guard Riders, USO and other organizations greet families in the airport terminal as they arrive for their flight.This may include assisting with luggage, escorting through the airport to the departure gate, participating in a welcome line (gauntlet from security checkpoint to departure gate) and doing activities with the children. In a nutshell, volunteers make this event as special and memorable as possible for these families. Once the families have arrived at the gate, active duty personnel typically leave. Looking for a way to give back to the NAS Oceana and Dam Neck Annex communities? NAS Oceana Youth Program and Midway Manor Youth Program are looking for volunteers to help with the new Drug Education for Youth (DEFY) program. The DEFY program is sponsored by the Secretary of the Navy’s Drug Reduction Task Force and is a two-phase program targeted at kids ages nine-12.The program empowers them to build a positive, healthy lifestyle and gives them the tools they need to resist drugs, gangs and alcohol. They are looking for people who are enthusiastic about kids, willing to learn and teach, like to have fun, are outgoing and consider themselves to be a good role model. Mentors must be over the age of 18, complete a volunteer application and background check, and attend mandatory training. Volunteers must also submit a special request chit through their chain of command. There are a wide variety of volunteer positions available such as mentors, mentor coordinators, administrative assistants, team leaders and assistant team leaders.

U.S. FLEET FORCES COMMAND U.S. Fleet Forces Command is looking for volunteers for their Stewards of the Sea: Defending Freedom, Protecting the Environment exhibit, located on the third ﬂoor of the Nauticus in downtown Norfolk. The purpose of the exhibit is to help educate the public that Sailors are training to protect our country in a manner that respects and safeguards the environment. Volunteers will help guide visitors through the exhibit and answer questions about the exhibit. They welcome active duty or retired military 18 years of age or older. Museum volunteers receive training, free parking, inclusion in an award recognition program, a volunteer holiday lunch, a 25 percent admission discount to Nauticus, and a 25 percent discount at the Nauticus gift store.
