SAILORS KEEP HALLOWEEN SAFE FOR AREA RESIDENTS STORY AND PHOTO BY JOHN COKER President, Residents of Redwing Civic League This Halloween, Sailors from the Avionics Division of Fleet Readiness Center (FRC) Oceana volunteered as crossing guards inside the Redwing neighborhood creating a safer and more enjoyable event. Residents appreciated the Sailors’ presence and praised their quick reaction in resolving a situation that could have been much worse. During the trick-or-treating, a young girl, just four years of age, became separated from her family. Frantic and not able to locate her, the family approached Aviation Electronics Technician Airman
Anthony Coonrodela and asked for help. Coonrodela promptly contacted AT1 Dillard Slawson, the petty officer in charge of the detail, who spread the word to all of his Sailors. Slawson also reported the missing child to Community Police Officer, Master Police Officer Tharnon Lipsey, who was at the Residents of Redwing candy station interacting with the neighborhood children. Thankfully, an alert crossing guard, AT2 (AW/SW) Blake Brandemihl, spotted the crying child, made sure she was safe and uninjured and contacted Slawson. The child was quickly reunited with her family and was able to complete trick-or-treating.

FSEP selectees will be reimbursed for up to three application and transcript fees. Participants must consult the list of schools that already have Education Service Agreements (ESA) on the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Civilian Insti-
tutions (CIVINS) approved schools website at www.nps.edu/Academics/CIVINS/ Curricula_ApprovedSchools.html. C HAPLAIN’S CORNER Secure relationships
LT. ROB FASNACHT Chaplain Relationships are tough. It is hard to feel in love with someone when they are behaving in an unlovable way. It is difficult to express true
feelings and have a candid conversation when there is a constant fear of abandonment. Secure relationships should provide an environment where disagreements live and die but the truth of love always remains. Conversely, in insecure relationships, someone remains quiet in pain because they fear being left alone. When we, as created beings, have a secure relationship with our Creator, we no longer have to fear our perceived lack of worth. We know that we are uniquely
made by the very hand of God, and all creation has great value. St. Paul wrote in Romans 5, “And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope” (2b-4). Paul is not teaching us to be masochistic about pain; he is telling us to look for something positive in the midst of the suffering. Endurance produces results. We have become a society
that quits too early on hard tasks. Marathon and now ultramarathon running have become trendy because of the thrill of persevering through the physical and emotional pain of running. Running is a great teacher. She shows us our perceived limits and how far our actual limits surpass the perceived. She teaches that endurance does produce character. For my children, I want them to become people of character, that their lives would showcase integrity, generosity, and compassion. These qualities are not innate—they go against the grain of self-preservation. For example, in order for them to learn to be generous, they will have to see that other people have needs greater than their
own—empathy—and be willing to sacrifice something of their own to meet others’ needs. Giving up anything is suffering for a small child. As adults, we should behave as adults, but typically, we fall right into the old habit of self-preservation and hoard our belongings and time. In our insecurity, we act in immature—childish—ways. To overcome this, we must securely connect to our creative force. God has created us in His own image, and that is spectacular! Our beauty comes from the inside not the clothes on our backs. When we know we are created with a purpose, we can go and love with a purpose. When we see that all people are created in the image of God and that we all have a common denomi-
nator of value, then we can learn to let go and forgive one another. One of the great lies of Hollywood is stated in the movie Jerry Maguire, when Jerry tells his love, “You complete me.” God did not create us incomplete. He created us to be whole beings but in relationship with one another. When I am secure in God, secure in myself, I can be secure in my relationships with others. This security produces freedom: freedom to disagree, to digress, or to even be discordant and to still be lovable. When we endure through our own pain, we can empathetically come alongside others and help carry theirs as well. May we see ourselves as lovable and learn to love others as we love ourselves.
ENERGY AWARENESS TIP OF THE WEEK Did you know many appliances continue to draw power when they are switched off? On average, 75 percent of electricity used to power coffee makers, VCRs and TVs is consumed while turned off. To save energy, unplug the appliance when not in use, or use a power strip and the strip’s on/off switch to cut all power. Be on the lookout for the Commanding Officer’s Energy Challenge!

VFA-15 DOMINATES THE LAST FRONTIER STORY AND PHOTOS BY LT. J.G. ANDREW DAVIS VFA-15 Public Affairs Officer Following a successful summer of detachments to Michigan and Florida, the “Valions” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 15 headed out once more, this time to Joint Base ElmendorfRichardson in Anchorage, Ala. for a two-week training exercise working with F-22 Raptors of the 90th Fighter Squadron and the 525th Fighter Squadron. Over the course of this two-week training evolution the Valions participated in 173 hours of training, providing an invaluable opportunity for 14 squadron pilots. The exercises allowed Valion pilots to prepare and execute Basic Fighter Maneuvers (BFM), Air Combat Maneuvering (ACM) and Low Altitude Training (LAT) events in an optimal training environment. The detachment to Alaska helped create an exceptional opportunity for VFA-15’s junior pilots

terrain, but it also provides an excellent training environment for our pilots and maintainers. Like most detachments the Valions participate in, they left a positive impression on the base and the community. 35 Valion Sailors volunteered their free time by participating in a community outreach program at the Last Supper Soup Kitchen which serves food for those in need of assistance in the local community. The detachment to Alaska provided two weeks of first-rate training for the aviators and an opportunity for the maintenance department to manage our fully mission capable aircraft offsite from Oceana. The Valion maintenance

team once again demonstrated their ability to execute flight operations successfully at distant offsite locations. Valion sailors battled the frigid environment and kept pace to keep VFA-15 jets in the air, enabling the successful completion of 102 sorties. The detachment was without a doubt a complete success as a result of the combined efforts and dedication of the Valion team.
Who are the Valions of VFA-15? Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 15 was originally established as Torpedo Squadron (VT) 4 on Jan.10, 1942. In the 68 years since that time, the Valions have had four different designations and flown six different aircraft. Valion pilots and crew have operated from the decks of fifteen different aircraft carriers and made 35 major deployments. They are ten-time winners of the COMNAVAIRLANT “E” for Battle Efficiency and the Estocin Award winner in 1999, given to the finest strike fighter squadron in the Navy.

VOLUNTEERS
NEEDED SNOWBALL EXPRESS
Snowball Express is a four-day event for Gold Star Children filled with fun activities, like sporting events, dances and amusement parks. The Snowball Express organization, Gary Sinise Foundation and American Airlines hosts this annual event for children (five to 18-years-old) who have lost a parent on active duty. The children and their families participating from Norfolk will take the same flight on Dec. 12 from Norfolk International Airport. Military members, Patriot Guard Riders, USO and other organizations greet families in the airport terminal as they arrive for their flight. This may include assisting with luggage, escorting through the airport to the departure gate, participating in a welcome line ( gauntlet from security checkpoint to departure gate) and doing activities with the children. In a nutshell, volunteers make this event as special and memorable as possible for these families. Once the families have arrived at the gate, active duty personnel typically leave. However, they are more than welcome to stay until the flight departs. For more infor-
mation and to volunteer, contact LS1 Jeffrey J. Rhein at jeff.rhein@navy.mil or 433-2031.
