(NNS) — With the announcement “we have now commenced fast cruise,” Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) began simulating an at-sea environment, Aug. 19, in preparation for their first underway in four years. A fast cruise is a multi-day simulated underway period consisting of drills and training evolutions to ensure the carrier is in good working condition and personnel are trained to safely operate the ship at sea. Fast cruise is the ship’s final training event prior to getting underway for Sea Trials. “It’s been about four years and literally millions of manhours of work that have gone into Theodore Roosevelt to get her where she is today, but we are now there,” Capt. Daniel Grieco,TR’s commanding officer, announced to the crew over the 1MC.“Thank you to everyone who worked extremely hard, especially over the weekend, to get us here.” In addition to training evolutions, the crew will also put

Semper Gumby BY LT. CMDR. PAUL GREER NAS Oceana Chaplain Over the past few weeks, I’ve been doing some introspection on leadership and teamwork as part of an online course on conflict resolution. I came across a quote in my studies from John Maxwell who said “teamwork and personal rigidity just don’t mix.” As I look at the early Christian church, I see times of sadness where great teams such as Paul and Barnabus split up over personal rigidity, not fundamental issues. I also look to the disciples of Jesus and see a great diversity of personalities, trades and cultures; yet we also see the importance of unique individuals effectively working together as a team with a common goal despite those differences. Sure, they had squabbles about who would be the best or sit at the right hand of the master, but they were able to work through their own differences and selfish motives, and return back to the team mentality, united in purpose because they were a part of something bigger than themselves. I think the key here is an old Marine proverb I learned in my first tour which was “blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be broken” or in simple terms,“Semper Gumby.” Maxwell quotes “Inflexibility is one of the worst human failings.You can learn to check impetuosity, overcome fear with confidence,and laziness with discipline. But for rigidity of mind there is no antidote. It carries the seeds of its own destruction.” To be a team player, I’ve always learned that I must adjust to my seniors, but I’ve also learned that people are motivated by different things, so to be a good team leader or member; you have to adjust to the team itself.This means the key to a good team is adaptability. Adaptability means that we have to be teachable, we have to be creative and think outside of the box, we have to get into the habit of learning and growing; and finally we must be service minded and think about others, not just ourselves.This is when a team functions at its best. The Apostle Paul as a church leader got this when he said in Philippians 3:12-15 “Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was — See Adaptability, Next page

Truman Carrier Strike Group (HST CSG) entered U.S. 5th Fleet’s area of responsibility (AOR) Aug. 18, after completing a routine transit through the Suez Canal. “Our Sailors and Marines executed a safe and professional transit through the Suez Canal and we are now operating in the 5th Fleet AOR,” said Rear Adm. Kevin Sweeney, commander, HST CSG.“We’ve trained hard and we’re ready to operate alongside our coalition partners to conduct maritime security operations to ensure stability and build trust and confidence throughout the region.” HST CSG is on a scheduled deployment conducting maritime security operations, theater security coopera-
tion efforts and support missions for Operation Enduring Freedom. HST CSG includes Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 10; aircraft carrier USS Harry S. DoD announces same-sex spouse benefits From Department of Defense Public Affairs WASHINGTON (NNS) — The Department of Defense announced its plan to extend benefits to same-sex spouses of uniformed service members and Department of Defense civilian employees Aug. 14. After a review of the department’s benefit policies following the Supreme Court’s ruling that Section Three of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional, and in consultation with the Department of Justice and other executive branch agencies, the Defense Department will make spousal and family benefits available no later than Sept. 3, 2013, regardless of sexual orientation, as long as service member-sponsors provide a valid marriage certificate. The Department of Defense remains committed to ensuring that all men and women who serve in the U.S. military, and their families, are treated fairly and equally as the law directs.
Entitlements such asTRICARE enrollment,basic allowance for housing (BAH) and family separation allowance are retroactive to the date of the Supreme Court’s decision.Any claims to entitlements before that date will not be granted. For those members married after June 26, 2013, entitlements begin at the date of marriage. The Department of Defense recognizes that same-sex military couples who are not stationed in a jurisdiction that permits same-sex marriage would have to travel to another jurisdiction to marry. That is why the department will implement policies to allow military personnel in such a relationship non-chargeable leave for the purpose of travelling to a jurisdiction where such a marriage may occur.This will provide accelerated access to the full range of benefits offered to married military couples throughout the department, and help level the playing field between opposite-sex and same-sex couples — See Benefits, Page 10

First term Sailors get career decision help BY SUSAN D. HENSON Center for Personal and Professional Development Public Affairs Officer Sailors in their first enlistment have better information on which to base career decisions with the release of the First Term Success Workshop (FTSW), said Center for Personal and Professional Development (CPPD) officials Aug. 15. The revised version of the workshop is now available for use by commands across the fleet, according to Master Chief Navy Counselor (SW/AW) Michael Sekeet, Command Career Counselor Course manager at CPPD. While this is a revision to a previous version of FTSW, Sekeet said the course is much more than an update to content.“This is the first truly developed FTSW in that it has the target audience in mind and is more than just a presentation,” he said. The improved workshop is designed to provide basic critical and timely information on the Career Development Program, computer- and web-based resources, upward mobility and advancement, and also retention and transition information, according to Sekeet.“This information will enable Sailors to make sound career decisions in reaching their full potential during their first tour,”he said. FTSW is a command-delivered training product administered by the command career counselor with the help
of the command’s Career Development Team. The content consists of a lesson plan, a presentation and a trainee guide. It is available for download on Navy Knowledge Online (NKO) for career counselors to use in coordination with their commands in delivering the workshop locally to Sailors. The release of the updated workshop content is part of the continual revision process to better meet the fleet’s training needs.“We encourage people to use the feedback link for Navy Counselor/Command Career Counselor (NC/CCC) training on NKO to provide CPPD with feedback on current training products or suggestions for future ones,” Sekeet said. To fulfill the fleetwide requirement for this training, commands must document FTSW completions in Fleet Training Management and Planning System (FLTMPS), he said. Capt.John Newcomer,CPPD’s commanding officer,said delivering the new version of FTSW reflects CPPD’s commitment to providing Sailors with the tools they need to make informed decisions.“CPPD teaches Sailors to assess risk and apply critical thinking skills to make sound personal and professional decisions. First Term Success Workshop is a perfect example of providing Sailors with the best information available to develop their skills in risk assessment and critical thinking as they relate to service in the Navy and beyond.”

VFA-15 holds change of command BY LT. KORY KEYMER VFA-15 Public Affairs Officer Cmdr. Dan Hughes was relieved by Cmdr. Nicholas D. Good as Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 15’s commanding officer during a ceremony held at the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit at Naval Air Station Oceana July 18. During his command, Hughes led the “Valions” through a successful predeployment work-up cycle, which included the Navy’s air-to-air and air-tosurface strike fighter advanced readiness programs (SFARP). During his tour, the command accumulated more than 3,300 flight Cmdr. Nicholas D. Good hours, while flying 2,700 sorties and employed more than 17,000 20mm rounds in combination with 300 precision and unguided munitions. During the ceremony, Hughes spoke proudly of serving with the men and women of VFA-15.“The Valions have one objective: “Dominate.” There truly is none finer!”

Hailing from Waycross, Ga., Hughes graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1995. Hughes served with the “Golden Warriors” of VFA-87 and as an instructor at VFA106. Completing the Navy’s fighter tactics instructor (SFTI) training in 2002, Hughes returned to the fleet and served with both the “Blue Blasters” of VFA-34 and the “Vigilantes” of VFA-151. Additionally, Hughes served as a staff officer at the U.S. Joint Forces Command at Norfolk. Hughes served as VFA-15’s executive officer from March 2011 to May 2012. Good is a native of Sherman,Texas and a 1996 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He has served with the “Ragin’ Bulls” of VFA-37 and instructed at the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center (NSAWC) where he completed the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN). After orders to the “Shrikes” of VFA-94 and the “Blue Diamonds” of VFA-146, he reported to the U.S.Naval War College,earning a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies. Prior to reporting to VFA-15, Good served with Expeditionary Combat Readiness Center at Joint Expeditionary Little Creek-Fort Story. Good assumed the responsibilities of executive officer in May 2012. VFA-15 is assigned to Carrier Air Wing 8 and Carrier Strike Group 2 and is currently preparing for deployment. In 2014, the squadron will embark aboard USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77), and support national interests in the 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility.

Change of command: Teamwork between Oceana and surrounding communities emphasized — Continued from page 1 “Goose ran a great squadron then and I knew he was going places,”said O’Hanlon. One of those places eventually was to AIRLANT, where Geis served as the executive assistant to O’Hanlon. After taking command of NAS Oceana on March 8, 2012, less than a month later on April 6, Geis had to deal with the crash of an F/A-18 from Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 106 at NAS Oceana into the Mayfair Mews apartments. “Goose and the Oceana team, in full partnership with the dedicated first responders of Virginia Beach, went to task.The teamwork was remarkable, a product of the substantial training between the Navy and Virginia Beach first responders,” he explained. The admiral also noted how Geis worked hard to continue to build on the relationship between the Navy and Virginia Beach and also developed a strong bond with Chesapeake.He also praised Geis for dealing with numerous budget issues with dwindling resources,always keeping his eye on the “people programs, so vital to Sailors and their families … Bob always had his priorities right.” As he wished Geis success in his next assignment at Commander, Navy Installations Command, O’Hanlon concluded with “Bob Geis is handing down to Kit Chope an extremely well-run air station, filled with motivated people and ready to support naval air operations well into the future.” Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Rear Adm. Dixon Smith then presented Geis with the Legion of Merit for his many accomplishments as the commanding officer of Oceana, Dam Neck Annex and Naval Auxiliary Landing Field (NALF) Fentress. Geis began his final remarks as Oceana’s commanding officer by explaining he was accepting the award on behalf of the Oceana team. He recognized many of those team members in the audience, including former Oceana Command Master Chief Bill Smalts, now on USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), as well as current Command Master Chief Eric Clark. He also singled out Oceana’s new ombudsman Carrie Lloyd and his executive assistant Sue Guilbault with presentations of flowers. “You are absolutely the best gatekeeper in the United States Navy,” he joked to Guilbault. He thanked his father for being his first and most influential teacher, who taught him about strength, commitment and courage.As he recognized his wife Teresa and daughter Megan in the front row, Geis explained why his son Bob couldn’t attend. Recently commissioned, Ensign Bob Geis, is attending Officer Development School in Newport, R.I. in preparation for medical school at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. His friendship and respect for Chope, whom he referred by his call sign of “Gator,” was obvious.“Thanks for making this job fun … It was amazing to me how well
we’ve meshed right from the start. It’s pretty obvious to anyone who’s seen us during our tour that we not only enjoy doing our jobs, but we enjoy being together doing our job. I can’t think of anyone I would rather trust working on our team than you my friend. I know the team is going to get even better,” said Geis. Geis expressed his appreciation to the enlisted Sailors and officers and civilians; many of those civilians were in attendance on their furlough day.“We’ve built a team that works for each other and with each other to get the job done. We’ve worked to make sure everyone knew they were valued,” said Geis. Geis praised the civilians for being the “continuity and corporate knowledge that prevents us from making the same mistakes we made in the past, again.”

His concern when he took command was how to take a team as good as Oceana’s and keep it moving forward. “I chose to keep moving on the things we did well and try to keep it moving outside of the fenceline.I wanted to continue to nurture relationships that we have and take it to the next level,” he explained. No one knew just how much the team’s relationship with the community would be tested during the aircraft
mishap and in the days and weeks afterwards. The ability of Oceana’s team to work together, both on base and with city officials, reaffirmed Geis’ core values of always doing the right thing, even when it’s not easy and when there are challenges, such as the ones he encountered in his 18 months as commanding officer. Even though the team,which will now be led by Chope and new Executive Officer Capt. Louis Schager, will face many challenges, “I’m certain there isn’t anything this team can’t accomplish as long as we have the power to set goals and give them the tools they need to do their jobs,” said Geis in conclusion. Chope began his brief remarks by noting that the day following the ceremony would mark 70 years since Oceana was first established as a Navy base during the middle of World War II. “We’ve come a long way since then at Oceana, Dam Neck and Fentress, and their commitment to our nation and our Navy has never wavered,” said Chope. Recognizing former commanding officers, retired captains Dexter Rumsey, John Allen and Mark Hunter, as well as Cmdr. George Michaels, representing his father Capt. Danny Michaels, who recently died, Chope said “I’m humbled to follow in your footsteps and I promise to be an attentive skipper of this legendary base.” He also plans to honor Oceana’s heritage by continuing professional customer service, with new initiatives already in the planning stages. Displaying his sense of humor, Chope then poked a little fun at himself. “Taking a knuckle-dragging aviator with a North Carolina and South Carolina public school education and molding him into an installation leader is not a simple task,” he said. Like other installation commanders, Chope knows he will be surrounded by “an extraordinary group of professionals … who go well above and beyond what their job description states to provide the finest customer service to the fleet.” As he thanked family, friends and former shipmates, Oceana’s new commanding officer joked how they were really there “for the free food and beer, and to prove to yourself this actually transpired.” Chope recognized several of his former A-6 Intruder shipmates in the audience, wondering if there “was an impromptu Intruder reunion,” taking place later. Chope began his career as a naval flight officer in the Intruder at the “Black Panthers” of Attack Squadron 35, before transitioning to the F-14 Tomcat and eventually to the F/A-18 Super Hornet, where he commanded the “Fighting Redcocks” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 22 at NAS Lemoore, Calif. He concluded by thanking Geis.“I will miss your calm approach … I’m looking forward to you doing great things at CNIC and watching you rise through the ranks,” he said to his former boss.

COMMUNITY CALENDAR » » » » » » » » » » » » » » » » » » » » » » » » Enjoy Portsmouth Museums Blue Star Program through Labor Day From Portsmouth’s Department of Marketing and Communications The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, the Lightship Portsmouth, and the Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center continue to offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from now through Labor Day, Sept. 2. Leadership support has been provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Families. The museums, part of the Blue Star Museums, a partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and more than 2,000 museums across America, officially launched this year’s program on Memorial Day. In the past few years, Blue Star Museums welcomed more than 300,000 active duty military personnel and their families during the summer seasons. The Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center, (PACC), housed in the historic 1846 Courthouse, is devoted to offering quality educational, cultural and aesthetic experiences through rotating visual art and cultural exhibits, lectures, classes and performances. Currently on view is the exhibit “My Heart Beats for Peace,” featuring historic artifacts from the Civil War era, focusing on civilian and family and military life. The exhibit continues through August 25. Also on view is “The Painter’s Journey,”which offers paintings by three Virginia artists: Karen Blair, Delmon Brown Hall IV and Rob Vander Zee. PACC is located at 400 High Street, Portsmouth. Researching, preserving and promoting the history of the City of Portsmouth, the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and the armed forces in Hampton Roads, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum offers a unique perspective on U.S. history, from Colonial to Civil War times and beyond.Visitors can view ship models, uniforms, military artifacts and exhibits portraying life in 18th, 19th and 20th century Portsmouth. The Lightship Portsmouth tells the story of those who served in the Lightship Service, their dedication to life aboard the vessel and service to the navigation of mariners. The ship’s interior main deck is fitted out realistically and filled with fascinating artifacts, uniforms, photographs, models and more.The museum is located at 2 High Street, Portsmouth. The downtown Norfolk waterfront heats up with 13th Annual AT&T Norfolk Latino Music Festival,Aug. 24, 5 -10 p.m. at Town Point Park in downtown Norfolk This year’s festival hosts Latin singer-songwriter Toby Love Toby Love performing a unique pop style that mixes R&B, hip-hop, and elements of the traditional Dominican musical form bachata. Dubbed “crunkchata,” the music often features the Bronx, N.Y.-based vocalist singing in Spanish as well as English. The Latin vibe carries over into the food and beverage menus available to Festival guests. Feast on a variety of authentic Latin favorites. The 13th Annual AT&T Norfolk Latino Music Festival is a great opportunity to introduce friends and family to traditional Latin rhythms, dance and food. Plane pull to benefit Wounded Warrior Project The Brute Strength Strongman Plane Pull to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project is coming to the Virginia Beach Military Aviation Museum, Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. Participants will pull either an AD4N-Skyraider or a P-51 Mustang approximately 75 ft. using a setup like the World’s Strongest Man. All proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Participants are asked to keep in mind this is a family event when choosing a costume. The entry fee is $50 and includes admission to the museum and T-shirt. Spectator admission is $10 and includes admission to the museum. The museum is located at 341 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach and more information about the museum is available at www.militaryaviationmuseum.org.
