Due to sequestration and mandatory furlough of DoD civilians, the Navy College Ofﬁce will be closed on Fridays now through Sept. 20. All college and university services including counseling, registration and classes will continue as normal.The Navy College Ofﬁce will provide normal services, Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., during this period. Youth soccer registration Registration has begun for the Fall Youth Soccer Season. Games begin in September and run through November.The cost is $40 per child and is open for ages 5 - 15, although a league for ages 13 -15 will depend on enough registrations. Military Challenge The Flagship and Military Newspapers of Virginia will host the 3rd annual Military Challenge July 27 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. This ultimate military style confidence course will feature a 5K run/obstacle course designed to challenge any athlete. Civilians will be able to compete alongside the military and take on obstacles used in military training. Individuals or teams of five may compete.There will also be a kids’ mini challenge where children will have to conquer mini obstacles. This event will include food, family entertainment and a post race party. Teams and individuals will compete for the top honors and all finishers will receive a medal. A portion of the event proceeds will benefit the USO of Hampton Roads/Central VA. Active duty military will receive $5 off their registration. For command teams, the command with the most participants will receive a $500 donation to their MWR fund.The command must have a minimum of 20 individuals or 4 teams to qualify for the donation. Teen Leadership Summit Kinder Adventure Week All children enrolled in either the Oceana or Midway Manor Kinder Program are invited to spend the week of Aug. 26 - 30 getting ready to attend the school for the first time.Activities include riding the MWR bus like they will on the first day of school, eating lunch with new friends, a field trip and learning about the youth center and the activities they will participate in. The cost of Kinder Adventure Week is based on total family income. Stop for pedestrians Caution signs have been placed around building 531 on NAS Oceana to remind all drivers to STOP for pedestrians in the crosswalks. With youth camps taking place this summer on Oceana, all drivers are asked to be aware of increased numbers of pedestrians, especially children. Virginia law states drivers must stop at all crosswalks for pedestrians.

Virginia Beach awarded for military partnerships Virginia Beach City Public Schools, JEB Little CreekFort Story and NAS Oceana were awarded the 2013 Outstanding Partnership Award by the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC). In 2004, the MCEC Board of Directors established the Pete Taylor Partnership of Excellence Award named for Lt. Gen. Pete Taylor who was previously the MCEC Chairman.Taylor played a critical role in the establishment of partnerships between military installations and

school districts serving military-connected children.The award was established in recognition of General Taylor’s work and dedication to helping America’s military children. TRUMAN: Finally deploys after delays due to defense budget — Continued from page 1 to sequestration and the change of aircraft carrier presence requirements in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. The current deployment is part of an on-going rotation of forward-deployed forces to support maritime security operations (MSO) in the U.S. 6th and 5th Fleet areas of operations. MSO set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment and complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. MSO deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other material. Truman is the ﬂagship for HST CSG. It can travel in excess of 30 knots, and has a ship’s company of approximately 3,000.With the embarked air wing and staffs, the number rises to about 5,000. To increase transparency of the department's criminal proceedings, SECNAV directed the services to begin publishing the results of all Special and General Courts-Martial, including sexual assault cases, on the service primary websites of Navy.mil and Marines.mil, respectively, by July 25. The ﬁrst of these summaries will cover those cases concluded from January through June of this year, but future editions will be published regularly. CNO Updates Status of the Navy BY MASS COMMUNICATION SPECIALIST SEAMAN JENNIFER LEBRON Defense Media Activity - Navy WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert discussed the status of the fleet, readiness impact due to sequestration, and modifications to Navy policies at a press conference July 19 at the Pentagon. “Presence remains our mandate,” Greenert said.“This is what we are mostly about, and it’s an essential element of our defense strategic guidance.” Greenert pointed out that the Navy has about 95 ships deployed and about 3,700 operational aircraft.The current ship count in the Mediterranean has been higher than it has been through the years. USS Kearsarge and USS San Antonio are positioned in the Red Sea and stand ready with a range of missions and operations if required. USS Nimitz is deployed to the North Arabian Sea supporting ground operations in Afghanistan with close air support, and piracy in the region is slowly increasing

and is becoming more of a concern. In the Pacific theater,Talisman Saber Exercise,started July 14,off the coast of Australia and in the Coral Sea.TS13 is an ongoing biennial training exercise with Australia and currently has George Washington Carrier Strike Group and Bonhomme Richard Amphibious Ready Group assets participating. In the Southern Command, sequestration has caused the reduction to zero combat ships in the region. “There are other naval forces in the region,” Greenert said.“Non-combatant ships and other forces.” The Navy’s first spearhead class joint high speed vessel will deploy to the Southern Command area of operation in FY 14. “Presence forward, assuring our allies and deterring potential adversaries is our primary function,” Greenert said. “I think we are out there at the,what I call,the mari- Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. CNO: Budget and sexual assault prevention topic of discussion — Continued from page 6 CNO addressed the readiness impact of sequestration for FY 13 and FY 14. There is one carrier strike group (CSG) and one amphibious ready group (ARG) deployed to the each of theArabian Gulf and Western Paciﬁc theaters. However, the surge force is a concern, Greenert said. Currently, there is only one CSG and one ARG ready to surge if needed.A year ago, the Navy had three CSGs and ARGs ready to surge. Despite reduced operations and maintenance spending in FY 13,Greenert said the Navy’s focus is to keep sea com-

mands ready for deployments scheduled for FY 14. For FY 14, sequestration could reduce each account by 10 percent.The Navy possibly faces deeper cuts for FY 14, because FY 13 used money available from previous years to help pad the effects of sequestration, Greenert explained. CNO’s goal is to preserve shipbuilding and aviation contracts through this process. Furlough impacts to the civilian force continue to be a challenge. “Regrettably, we’re enduring furloughs,” Greenert said. “It’s an impact, I felt it last week. I feel it this week. It hurts

our readiness and it hurts our productivity as well.” CNO addressed sexual assault organizational changes and a revision to the Navy Exchange alcohol sales policy by further discussing the Navy’s newest changes that are taking place ﬂeet-wide. Greenert said with more than half of all sexual assaults involving alcohol,the Navy had to look more critically at the atmosphere and climate of its bases. Greenert said after a review of Navy Exchange alcohol sales trends at base stores, the data showed a high volume of sales occurring late into the night and early morning and were not in line with mainstream retailers.

evening was the presentation of five thousand dollars raised for the Air Warrior Courage Foundation, a charity that focuses on active duty, guard, reserve and retired military personnel and their families needing financial assistance for medical, educational, and other extraordinary expenses. “Pairing up the event with an honorable charity such as the Air Warrior Courage Foundation allowed us to not only ensure that the legacy of our squadron lives on, but to also bring folks together to lend a helping hand to those in need,” said Bauman. A giant check made out for five thousand dollars was presented to retired Capt. Bill Siegel, a representative of the Air Warrior Courage Foundation. “This was one of the best reunion gatherings I have been to since I retired. It was informative and filled with memories from over 40 years ago. The present squadron personnel made the old-timers feel very welcome and were a joy to swap Navy stories with,” said Siegel. There were many notable guests in attendance at the event, including retired Capt. Sam Sayers, who served as commanding officer of the Blue Blasters from 1971 to 1972. “At the reunion it made me and the rest of us ‘old guys’ very proud to see the squadron’s continued excellence,” said Sayers. “It was obvious that the leadership, camaraderie, airmanship and family values are outstanding. The entire weekend was well set up and executed. To current and future Blue Blasters I would say: keep the tradition going, stay safe and have fun! God speed.” The formal dinner was highlighted by a tribute given by Cmdr. Edward Smith, current commanding officer of the Blue Blasters, to some of the Blue Blasters whose lives were cut short while in the line of duty. Smith turned photos of fallen aviators into stories,telling the history of several highly distinguished Blue Blasters who heroically fought and died in World War II, back when VFA-34 began as Fighter Squadron Twenty (VF-20). After a successful reunion weekend, the Blue Blasters of VFA-34 look forward to many more gatherings to celebrate their rich heritage as a squadron and to bring together past and present Blue Blasters. “I am very proud of our team that put together an outstanding 70th Anniversary reunion,” said Smith. “These events not only allowed us to bring together Blasters new and old, but it is events like this that are essential to maintain the spirit and traditions of Naval Aviation.”

The Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Data Collection Coordinator (DCC) training will certify individuals to collect data through coordinated efforts with all agencies assisting a victim of sexual assault. Individuals certiďŹ ed as DCC will not have victim contact, but will ensure timely ďŹ ling of initial, continuation, and ďŹ nal SITREPs. The DCC will obtain the data elements in a Sexual Assault Incident Data Collect Report.
